INTRO We live in a world of amazing opportunities arising from digitalization, opening up a whole new universe of experiences, cooperation, expectations, businesses… Technology innovation is driving an unprecedented level of change in our social, economic, financial and even political environments at a global scale. More and more people and organizations are experiencing an exponential transformation, which creates fascinating opportunities in a yet volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous (VUCA) world. Thriving in this environment - as individuals and as organizations - requires becoming much more adaptive in anticipating, responding and most importantly leveraging this change. It means breaking away from current practices and traditional solutions by providing new experiences to audiences like customers or – in the context of this workshop – employees.
This publication is the result of a partnership between Cisco, the worldwide leader in networking and collaboration technology, dedicated to “change the way people work, live, play and learn”, and Domus Academy, Italy’s first postgraduate design school with a strong international reputation for its “learning by designing” methodology and its humanistic approach. In a dedicated Experience Design workshop, more than 40 design students from across the globe teamed up to develop visual concepts and UX scenarios for interactive digital solutions that could support the success of Cisco’s Talent Cloud. The Talent Cloud is an innovative ecosystem and operating model enabling organizational agility and speed, providing a cutting-edge employee experience and transforming the enterprise world of work. This e-book summarizes the workshop journey: the initial design challenge, the projects and the quests for meaning in Design, Technology and Innovation. It also testifies the effort, of both students and faculty body, to explore new territories by validating the effectiveness and value-add created by the crossdisciplinary design approach at the heart of Domus Academy methodology.
THE EXPERIENCE DESIGN WORKSHOP The “Talent Cloud Experience Design” workshop explored the design process from people’s point of view (neither users, nor consumers) in their real-life context, through studio-based activities. Everyday experiences are built upon the interaction and relationship with information, communication tools, relational spaces as well as interactive objects and services. The ability to decipher people’s needs, expectations and desires acted as a starting point. Every person was considered as an active participant in the definition of the service qualities and main features. The workshop leveraged the latest methodologies related to people’s activities, design investigation and context analysis. It also included the development of user experience scenarios together with the
generation, validation and assessment of innovative design solutions. The workshop investigated and analyzed user experience by exposing the students to methodologies and best practices – allowing them to extract knowledge from primary research activities. The activities covered not only the visual representation domain, but also the formalization of knowledge concerning activity flows and complex systems garnered through various techniques.

An evolutionary perspective as the new platforms of tomorrow’s services for managing/ addressing people: opening up opportunities to share objectives or task assignment and create alternative career paths inside a blended corporate environment. In recent years we have assisted to the birth of a new generation of interesting added value service performances that can provide a more dynamic work experience by understanding & acting on workforce skills and capabilities, deploying adaptive organizations and building great teams.
In order to raise the awareness and the perceived value of the range of assignment offers present under the Cisco domain and to engage employees in more relevant assignments based on their talent: the students of the Master in Business Design together with the students of the Master in Interaction Design and the Master in Visual Brand Design of Domus Academy have been involved in the development of an integrated project, which is going to incorporate perspectives coming from the three different disciplines.
DESIGN DIRECTIONS Which are the key elements that makes a business or an organization attractive? What if I can adapt my daily work flow and lifestyle to the work and career opportunities offered by the Company? What shape and features a “Talent Marketplace needs to highlight in order to match the right talented people with the needs of a project or assignment? What are the physical characteristics and opportunities offered by the different progressive working spaces of CISCO?
Work-ON BRAND: ATTRACT Communication and media as the body of our daily experiences. As we browse through countless information, when we are seeking for a career or a job opportunity we get attracted, at the first glance, by the way in which a brand is represented on line or by the way in which an experience is expressed and shared with the world.
How to raise the overall perception of working inside or for Cisco by promoting the company’s vision and philosophy with a modern and appealing visual language? What are the unique attractors for millennium talent to hire with a large, global corporation Vs. on-boarding smaller more agile competitors?
Work-IN LIFESTYLE: ENGAGE In order to build trust reaching goals is fundamental; it helps to both gaining knowledge and reputation while increasing self-productivity. Every job has its own characteristics and values, and at the same time each person has different skills and also unique expectations for the future.
How to provide useful information tailored to the manager’s purpose, potentially interested in talent anywhere in the organization? How to enhance professional skills, past experiences and direct collaborations as well as future aspirations with a attractive and effective visual language?
Talent Market PLACE: EXPLOIT Build a more strong and visible reputation while enlarging the network of professionals and collaborators. Digital environments for advanced service based on people participation and knowledge sharing can support daily working practices in different contexts, by leveraging the social web platform and infrastructure.
What if reputation can be measured, visualized and pushed whenever an opportunity match the desires and the expectations of a talented person? How to translate individual reputations in to visual key elements that could enhance and engage others in looking to professional background and skills?
Active Work-STAGE: INFORM Physical infrastructures, interactive furnishing and equipments are the stage where complex interactions and work related processes take place. Tools for supporting local and remote collaboration are collocated in a series of flexible spaces for hosting and broadcasting.
What if distributed physical interfaces could engage the workers community by visualizing ongoing activities and processes? Which are the rules, dynamics and visual key elements to transpose in the physical space in order to enhance a job opportunity or a talent?

MOTIVATION WILL ALMOST ALWAYS BEAT MERE TALENT.” NORMAN RALPH AUGUSTINE
WHAT IS IT Inspired from the historical Grand Tour, an educational rite of passage undertaken by young European men traveling through major cultural centers of Europe, The Cisco Grand Tour is an experience for employees to travel around the world, working on a network of socially based projects while living in co-living spaces located in the aided community.
MOTIVATION TRAVEL SOCIAL PROJECT EXPERIENCE CO-LIVING
The Grand Tourists will remain connected by sharing their collected experiences on a content platform to the rest of the Cisco network to ensure that even employees that do not travel can also experience the Grand Tour.
/ 37
HOW IT WORKS The Cisco Grand Tour has two keystones: the travel experience and the communication experience. Grand Tourist will work simultaneously on social project while balancing their original workload in an innovative startup environment afforded by the Cisco co-living space. Additionally, there will be a series of teaching experiences layered on top of the working experience including involvement with the TedX community and the “Ciceroni Series.” The second key part of the concept is the communication of the collected experiences to the outside world. The Grand Tour app connects the network of all Grand Tourists and allows for easy sharing of contents. Employees can use the app to upload pictures, videos and short text descriptions, check their own daily schedule and explore other co-living house projects and experiences. The visual stories will be published on a web content platform enabling the exploration for other Cisco employees and the generic public, such as curious university students.
38 \
In order to facilitate virtual collaborations and to utilize the entire network of people within the company, physical interactive infrastructure called “Cisco Windows” will be present in each co-living space, enabling brainstorms and teleconferences among the different locations and opening up an endless opportunities and scenarios of use.

CONCLUSION
PAOLO LORINI Project Leader
Since my early conversations with Nima* way before launch, I realized this Experience Design workshop with Cisco would have been one of the most challenging adventures in my long lasting project leadership collaboration with Domus Academy. Gone being the era when a permanent job at a global corporation was considered a safe and sought-after career path, nowadays even renowned giants like Cisco have to relentlessly convince their own employees that staying is

more rewarding than leaving. And it’s not anymore a matter of money: a top salary, if necessary, is an investment large organizations can afford. One of the key elements to attract, nurture and retain talented people seems to be the elusive ability to create an ecosystem where employees can live the progressive work experience of intrapreneurship**, that is being true entrepreneurs within the corporate environment. This practice asks for the integration of contrasting elements: stability and change, safety and risk, competition and collaboration, authority and transparency. How could we take on such a challenge? Only through a multidisciplinary design approach. The nine projects presented in this e-book speak for themselves of our joint efforts in designing multiple touchpoints to make this intrapreneurial
A multidisciplinary approach In the story of a designer it doesn’t happen every day to meet reality as Cisco. A company in which every gesture has deep influence on the lives of all of us. Big responsibility for those who work internally and for those who comes, as in our case, from outside. I am very grateful to Nima and Domus Academy for asking me to be a project leader in this workshop and to have built a working team so strong, effective and above all enjoyable. Everyone brought his approach, in my case the design
experience happen within Cisco at unprecedented levels. They all make use of technology in evolutive and narrative ways to create a continuous, informative and often exciting stream of opportunities for both employees and the corporate by fitting talents to assignments. Only time will tell if our today’s visions will become tomorrow’s reality, but I believe through this journey we have been able to create a solid scenario for an organization where people’s value is, more than ever, what matters most.
* Nima Gazestani, Course Leader of the Master in Interaction Design at Domus Academy. ** Gifford Pinchot III, 1978.
approach, “specialized in not being specialized”, necessarily multidisciplinary. It was not obvious that bringing together so many different heads would work... In my view, the students’ projects, their answers were extraordinary as well as the path they followed to develop and grow their works. A lucky experience for the remarkable meetings with talented Gianpaolo and Tom from Cisco, with Nima, Paolo and Emanuela and with all those special students. My wish is to start again to go deeper and larger. We are ready. Meanwhile, thanks for the good time we spent together.
imagination is leading THE way...
GIANPAOLO BAROZZI Sr Director HR / Leadership & Team Intelligence / Cisco
TOM LAMBERTY Manager HR / Leadership & Team Intelligence / Cisco
The results are stunning in many ways - at least two aspects shall be called out: You’re used to read a “conclusion” at the end of a workshopexperience like the one depicted in this publication. This time – however – it doesn’t feel right. The projects you went through are bold calls for a fresh start into an unknown rather than a finite answer. The diversity in perspective and the richness in creativity you find across all solutions are entirely in service of doing something fundamentally differently to explore (and enjoy!) the chances contemporary technology comes along with. Which does not mean by the way that the risks are ignored: they are rather tested against the opportunities. Imagination is leading the way – while implementation is becoming a means to success, and beyond: a means to a different way of living and working, collaborating and communicating. The sleek publication at hand allows you to witness new types of attitudes and ideas born After the Media (S. Zielinski) – by digital natives putting the classic dichotomy between reality and virtuality into question. Or even going one step further: ignoring it, since it has become meaningless to them.
We’re clearly moving out of a do-it-yourself world into something which could simply be called the sphere of do-it-with-others. Where ‘others’ can be humans and/or machines. This became obvious and relevant both in the practical way the design teams formed and re-arranged themselves during their project-work and in their conceptual approaches to design and envision the future of work. Digitalization follows digitization: the more data is being gathered, processed and made accessible the easier and more frequently we will get opportunities to create and try out new variations and transformation of what we used to call our lifeworld in analog ages. Watching the teams embracing these opportunities in practice as well as in their theoretical work was a perfect example showing that the benefits of digitalization have the potential to outweigh the risks. To see the ideas presented here becoming implemented will be less a matter of how it’ll work and more a matter of when it will happen: we’re looking forward with confidence to a future starting off here.
