And the great thing is that that is okay! Homesickness is a completely normal part of moving away, and it is okay for you to be sad and uncomfortable in your new home—for a while, but as time goes on, you need to overcome your homesickness and find the joy in your new home. The first thing you should do as you try to combat your homesickness is to embrace the fact th at you are homesick, own up to it. Rather than pretending it isn’t there, allow yourself to feel it fully and the n move on. By facing it upfront, you will be able to move on in ways that you could not otherwise do.
The Reasons for Homesickness So, now that you have thought about your homesickness, you may want to take some time to think about why it was you wanted to leave home in the first place. Was this a college you’ve been dreaming of your whole life? Have you always wanted to be here? Were you attracted to the city life, or t he beach, or the climbing locations? Once you know why you came, it is more difficult to be homesick because you will have so much to do. As such, now is the time to immerse yourself in your new surroundings. Check out the activities that are only available in your new city. Walk around the area and find a cool local coffee shop or a vintage store. Check out museums, hikes, and parks that are only available here in your new town. As you become more acquainted with the awesome things your Ogden college campus has to offer, you will find your new place becoming a home.
Try New Things As you make new friends and are exposed to new cultures, don’t be afraid to try new things, even if you never thought you would enjoy them before. Explore your campus and the city, taking fun classes, going to cool activities, and meeting new people, and you will become so excited about where you are that you won’t be able to even think about what you may be missing back home. That being said, be proud of where you come from! It is a part of you, and you should embrace it, not be embarrassed of it. As you explore colleges in Ogden, or wherever you are headed, you should take time to embrace your heritage, remembering the good and the bad of it, and use that as a lens through which you can see your new world. Homesickness is a big part of the college experience, so don’t be ashamed of it, and don’t let it bring you down. Live your life in a way that
your new city can become a home to you, and find ways to enjoy it. By taking charge of your homesickness, you can battle it and become happy with your new situation instead of spending all your time thinking of the old!
