Starting Your New Life Post-Graduation As excited as most college students are to graduate and get on with their lives, many are apprehensive about their job prospects. Everyone knows the economy is lagging and getting a job of any kind is difficult. However, most feel pretty confident that they will get a decent job post-graduation. Unfortunately, there appears to be a gap between the expectations and realities of post-graduate life.

Reality First of all, even though they expect that getting a good job will be difficult, most think that the y will enter a good job with good pay. Unfortunately, for most students, their expectations will fall short. While most recent graduates are able to find jobs, the pay and satisfaction with those new jobs are not as great as they anticipated. Many don’t receive the kind of job they really wanted, don’t get as much pay as expected, and don’t get as much guidance/training as they anticipated. But the good news is they still have reason to feel hopeful.

Game Plan To remedy these disappointments, many working graduates are now planning on going back to graduate school. Surveys suggest that as students graduate with their bachelor’s degree, they don’t plan on going on to obtain a graduate degree. While working graduates aren’t necessarily in the pits, they realize that if they want to speed up the advancement process in the workplace, a graduate degree will do that for them. People with graduate degrees are much more likely to get a better paying job with better working conditions. With a master’s, graduates are better candidates for more coveted jobs and their expertise will rocket them over the top of many other applicants. Happily, the realization that graduate school is a good option is can never come too late. In fact, working a year or two after getting your undergraduate can build your resume and help you get into a better university, which in turn, will get you a better job after you obtain your next degree.

Tips for Undergrads Undergraduate students should understand that their future is not bl eak. There are plenty of things they can do to increase their eligibility for better jobs post-graduation. For example, while not every internship will lead to a job, many do. Around 40% of students that did complete an internship got a job

as a result. Although that is less than half, it is nothing to shirk at. Even if you do not get a job directly as a result of an internship, the experience and references you can get through an internship will help you get a better job. Colleges in Ogden will help you plan and prepare for a future that is brighter than average.
