Icometoyoutotellyouinthismonthof May,asismycustom,somethingthatI experiencedrecentlyandhastouchedmy heart Atthesametime,ithasmademe reflectonacertainresponsibilitywehave regardingourdevotiontoMaryHelpof Christians.ThenIwilltellyouwhy.

Last,Iwouldliketohighlightthemagnificent educationalservicegivenatDonBosco SchoolsincethearrivaloftheSalesiansand, especiallyinrecentdecades,withthe Salesianpresencecalled“Bosconia.”

ASalesianCity

IttookplaceattheendofMarchwhenI wasrevisitingPeru.Iwantedtodrawnearto themostnortheasternpartofthecountryto bepresenttoacityandaSalesianpresence thatisverysignificantforseveralreasons:

Becauseitiscalledbyitsowninhabitants “thecityofeternalheat.”Indeed,itisvery hot,andthehumiditymakesitfeeleven moreso.

Atthesametime,itisaverySalesiancity

TheSalesianshavebeenpresenttherefor morethanacentury.Thus,awholestyle ofrelationshipsandeducationaltiesthat areveryfamiliar,verysimple inshort, verySalesian—havepermeatedthespirit ofthattown.

Aboveall,itisaveryMariancity,onevery devotedtoMaryHelpofChristianssinceit liesintheorbitoftwoSalesianpresences

Thisisahumble,beautifulworkinoneofthe poorerneighborhoodsplaguedbyconflictonthe outskirtsoftown.Thankstothejointeffortof manypeople(bothincivilsocietyandinthe Church),andespeciallythankstothecharismof DonBosco,thatpartofthecitycontinuestobe transformed,providingtheopportunityfor hundredsofboysandgirlstoreceivetechnical training.

Withthisschool,theywouldhaveachancefora profession.Heretheylearnandexerciseskillsand trainfortheworldofwork.Thereisevena magnificentSalesianmedicalcenterinBosconia thatisrunbyoneoftheofficialgroupsofour Family,theDamasSalesianas.

IbelieveIhavequicklydescribedwhatI encounteredinthe“cityofeternalheat.”Thiswas allworthmentioning,butitisnotall.Herean especiallydeepdevotiontoMaryHelpof Christianstouchedmyheart

Inanalmostimpromptugathering becauseonlyacoupleofweeksearlierhad IannouncedthatIwouldliketomeetthem Imetacrowdofmorethanthree thousandpeoplewhogatherat6:00p.m. onanygivenweekdaytocelebratethe EucharistinhonorofourMother,theHelpof Christians.Isawhundredsofchildrenand youngpeoplewiththeirfathersand mothersanddozensanddozensofboys, girls,andteenagersfromthevarious Salesianoratoriesinthearea,alongwith theirteachersandothers The“eternalheat ofthecity”seemedlittletomecompared tothefaith,devotion,interiority,andprayer, thesinging,andallthatIimaginedwas fillingtheheartsofthosepeople,justasit filledmine.

Onceagain,inmytravelsaroundthe Salesianworld,Iwasabletoseeformyself thatMaryHelpofChristians asDonBosco promised isabeaconthatilluminates,a safeharbor,andmaternalloveforherSon andforallofus,hersonsanddaughters. SheiscertainlytheMOTHERtowhomwe oughttoabandonourselves,forshewill alwaysbringustoherBelovedSon.Isaw this inPiura.Itisasinequanon.

Atthesametime,Iwanttoaddanother smallcomment,anecessaryself-criticism ofallofuswhoaresonsanddaughtersof DonBosco Itisthis:theSpiritofGod reacheswhereHewantsandtouches,as onlyHeknows,theheartsofHisfaithful.

Thisisalsothecasewithdevotiontothe MotheroftheSonofGod,butshehasalways desiredtocountonus.

ThecriticismImakeisthatthisdevotiontothe MotherofHeaven,toourMothertheHelpof Christians,hasyettobemadeknownlikethis, withthesameintensityandthesameapostolic passioninallpartsoftheworldorinallour presences.Thereareplaceswherewehave developedschools,madeprogress,andsurely servedthosepeople'sgood,butwehaveyetto learnhowtomakeourMotherknownandloved

ThiswouldbeincomprehensibletoDonBosco. Iwilltellyouthatitisequallyincomprehensible andunacceptabletome.If,inDonBosco'sFamily, therearepeoplewhodonotturntoorspread devotiontotheHelpofChristians,theymaybe devout,buttheywillnotbesonsanddaughters ofDonBosco SheisourMother Devotiontothe HelpofChristiansastheMotheroftheLordand ourMotherisnotoptionalintheSalesiancharism asitwasnotoptionalforDonBosco.Itisasine quanon

Iwishwithallmyheartthatshe,theMotherof theBelovedSon,sheourHelper,continuetobeas specialtoeveryoneinallpartsoftheworldasshe isin“thecityofeternalheat”(Piura,Peru).

Itservedasagoodremindertohonorour Motherforhervitalroleinourfaith, salvation,andearthlychallenges.Likethe weddingatCana,shewillalwaysbe concernedforourwell-being,actively supportingusinourneeds,andconstantly leadingustoherSonassheurgesus"todo whathe(herson)tellsus."

WithinoneyearofthePontificalCoronation, thevisitorstotheShrinewhoareina stateofgracehadthespecialprivilege ofreceivingplenaryindulgenceupon enteringthemainentrancedoors

Yesterday,Hiseminence,BishopJesse Mercado,DD,ceremoniallyclosedthe jubileedoor

Fittingtothethanksgivingafterthe pandemicisthebringingbackofthe traditionsweobserveinourfiestas:

withtheresumptionoftheprocessionwiththe prayingoftherosaryandaccompaniedbythe imagesofMaryHelpofChristians,St.Joseph, andDonBosco;thecelebrationoftheHoly Mass.

Justlikeourjourneyinlife,weneedtobe centeredinChrist;FellowshipafterMass,with sponsoredfoodbyhomeowners.

ItwasadelighttoseeparishionersinFilipiniana, withtheyoungandoldalike,dancingthe karakol.Havingperformancesrenderedbythe youthband, BECdancers,youthdancers,and Rondallagroup.Prizesgalorethroughgames andrafflesaddeddelighttothefiesta.

DonBoscoAcademyofPampanga,Inc. (DBA)bested57otherschoolsin MabalacatCityinanearthquakedrill competitionorganizedbytheMabalacat CityDisasterRiskReduction& ManagementOffice(CDRRMO).

DBAalsograbbedtheExcellence inSchoolEmergencyPreparednessand theExcellenceinMasteryofEvacuation Routesawards.

CDRRMOHead–JeffreySantos,BFP-SFO2–Daniel David,DepEdDRRMCoordinator–EdenGarcia,and MCAPSPresident–TeresitaGalangofficially evaluatedthesaidevent.

TheevaluationoftheearthquakedrillforDBA occurredlastApril18,2023.

Thecompetitionwasorganizedinviewof intensifyingthedisasterpreparednessofvarious schoolsinMabalacatCity.

KAYA Youth Camp in Malaysia… A Truly Enriching Experience

“DoyouwanttovolunteerinMalaysiaforone month?”

ThiswasaninvitationIreceivedonan ordinaryThursdaymorningfromFr.Jerry Santos,SDB,therectorofDonBoscoTarlac. Ofcourse,myinitialreactionwas,“Yes! Malaysia,”havinginmindthefun,rest,and sightseeing,and“thatwouldbeoutofthe country”Ithought Thisinvitationwasopento theSalesiansettingsinthePhilippines-North Province.

Fivevolunteersrespondedtothisinvitation–togetherwithmewerethreefromtheNational ShrineofMaryHelpofChristians,Paranaque namely,RechelleAlquiza,RenellDiazand MarjonAgualada;andonefromDonBosco Naga,aSalesianlayvolunteer–Ms Olivia Tiglao.

AfterouronlineorientationwithFr Ramon Borja,SDB,oneofourthreeSalesian missionariesinKuchingandnowservingas theYouthCommissionheadofthe ArchdioceseofKuching,hearingfromhim whatisgoingtohappen,Ihadsecond thoughts

Butevenwithdoubtsanduncertainties,I saidyestotheinvitation.Thus,onthe26th ofAprilweleftPhilippinesandarrivedin Kuching,Malaysia.Ourfirstovernightwasa welcomingnight.Itwaskindofchillbutwe allfeltkindofanxioustooforalmost everythingisliterallynewandcertainthings seemstilluncertain.Onoursecondday beganthethree-dayorientationand trainingasourimmediatepreparationfor theKAYAcamp Andtogetherwithuswere therestofthevolunteers,mostofwhomare KAYAcampgraduates.

TheArchdioceseofKuching,Malaysia organizedits29thKuchingArchdiocesan YouthApostolate(KAYA29)heldinSt Lukas Centre,KotaPadawan,Sarawakwiththe theme“WhodoyousayIam?”(Mt.16:15). Itwasattendedby131youngpeoplefrom thedifferentparishesofthearchdiocese, witharound20to30youthvolunteersand helpers Thecampstartedonthe30thof April,anditendedonthe22ndofMay2023.

KAYACampwasdesignedfortheCatholic youthofSarawakasajourneyoffaith,fun, friendship,andformation.

Thisthree-weekyouthcampispackedwith formativesessionsabouttheCatholicfaith andpractices,withprayermoments,suchas EucharisticAdorations,Confessions,dailyHoly MassandRosary,biblesharing,praiseand worshipsessions,andthelikes.Therewasalso communityserviceandoutreachprogram activities,relaxationandrecreation,singalongsessions,overnight inapilgrimagecenterlocatedupina mountain,overnightindifferentparish communities,andmanymore.

Manyoftheyouthparticipantswerenot activeChurchgoers/servantsintheir respectiveparishesandwerenoteven familiarwithmanyChurchpracticespriorto joiningthiscamp.ButduringtheKAYAcamp, itwassotouchingandfulfillingtoseethat theyallstartedtoappreciatetheimportance ofourCatholicfaithandthevalueandjoyof participatingandgettinginvolvedinchurch life.

EventhoughthiscampisnotaSalesianevent, we,Filipinos,becauseofourSalesian upbringing,realizedthatthepreventive systemrootedinthe3R’s(reason,religion, rapport)passedontousbySt.JohnBosco himselfcontinuestoberelevantandeffective injourneyingwithandministeringtoyoung people

amidstdifferencesinraceandculture,even amidstthebarrieroflanguage.Wehave witnessedhowtheseyoungpeopleofKuching weretransformedinmanyaspects intheir piety,closenesstoGod,prayerlife, appreciationoftheChurch,indiscipline, relationships,confidence,andinleadership andservice…allinaspanofthreeKAYAweeks.

Onthe22ndofMay,2023,thelastdayofKAYA 29,thesadtimetosaygoodbye,St.Lukas Centrewasfloodedwithtears,mineincluded. Buthonestly,Iseehopeineverygoodbye Iseeabettertomorrowinthe131young peoplewhoarenowKAYAgraduates.Asthey leftthecampsiteandhavecontinuedtogo onwiththeirlivesintheirrespectivefamilies andvillages,campusesanduniversities,work places,parishesandchapelcommunities, theysurelybringingwiththemtherichness andjoyofKAYA29whichhasmadethem experiencethebeautyofbeingfaithfulactive Catholics.

FromMay22to24,FrRamonBorjaSDBwith thebighelpfromhisteamofcoordinators (MariaAmella,JoanLauandJulianSim)and withthebiggenerosityofabenefactress (EstherLawLeePoh)wespentmomentsof sharingandprayer,ofevaluationand appreciation,ofconcludingtheKAYA experiencewithbiggratitudetoGodandto oneanother

Weevenhadalotoffoodandfunina wonderfulbeachresortduringourlast overnight.Thewholethinghastrulybeena verymemorableexperienceforus.

DuringourlastHolyMassthere,alongthe beach,Fr.Ramonthankedusallandthanked us,thevolunteersfromPhilippines,forbringing morecolorinthecamp.Hesaidthatourvery Salesianwayofservice,kindnessand friendshiphavetrulytouchedtheheartsofso manyifnotall.

HealsoexpressedhispraisestoGodforthe giftofSalesianvocation.ThatwasMay24,the feastofMaryHelpofChristians,andthatwas thedayhehascelebratinghis30th anniversaryofSalesianreligiousprofession. Withtearsfromhiseyes,nayfromhisheart,he gavethankstoGod,toMary,toDonBosco, andtousyoungpeople.

AverySalesianwayofcelebratingone’s professionanniversary!

Onapersonalnote,thiscamp,especially throughmyencounterswiththeyouth,didnot onlymakemefallinlovemorewiththeGod

whocallsusall,butalsomademefallinlove again,evenmoredeeply,withmySalesian vocationoflovingGodandbringingthatlove ofGodtotheyoung…andnodistance,status, nationality,race,language,andother differencescanpreventsuch.

Theword“kaya”inthelanguageofthepeople ofMalaysiameans“rich.”Indeed,thisKAYA hasmadetheseyoungpeopleandus volunteerstrulyrich–richinGod’slove,richin ouryoungpeople’sgiftednessandinspiration. Ialsosharedwiththeyouththerethatinour Filipinolanguage“kaya”means“it’spossible; Iorwecan.”

Andthathasbeenourexperience.Ithasbeen trulypossibleforayouthcamptoturnyoung peopleclosertoGodandricherinGodexperience

A smorgasbord of green efforts for a sustainable future

DonBoscoTondohasbeenundertakinginitiativestowardsattainingandsustainingahealthy ecosysteminthearea,suchasusingrenewableenergysourcesandenergy-efficientlights andappliances,waterconservation,urbanagriculture(hydroponicsandaquaponics), recyclingpractices,andenvironmentaleducation.

SolarEnergy.InSeptember2022,they installed28solarpanels,whichisequivalent to14kw.Theirsavingstotalabout20%oftheir totalpowerconsumption.Theyare producingcleanelectricityequivalent toone-fifthoftheirtotalconsumption.

EnergyEfficiency.Todate,90%oftheir lightingisLEDbulbs,whichusearound75% lesselectricity.Mostoftheirairconunitsuse invertertechnology,saving30%to50%of electricity.Theseeffortsnotonlyhelplower electricitybillsbutalsoreducecarbon dioxideemissions

DonBoscoCalauan,inpartnershipwithRiseAgainstHunger(Philippines),putupvegetable farminginitsavailablelandarea.Thispartnershipcreatesanopportunityforbothafood sourceandanincomesourceforresidentswillingtovolunteertomanagethefarm. Peopleinthecommunitygaininspirationthatthereareplentyofwaystoliftthemselvesout ofpovertyandimprovetheirlivesbytransformingtheiridlelandsintonaturalfoodfarms. Thisfarmalsoprovidesandsupplieshealthyvegetablesinthefeedingprogramofthecenter

Asidefromitsdifferent initiativesinminimizingwaste, DonBoscoCalauanpromotes recyclingbytransforming emptywatercontainersand plasticsachetsintoplanting potsforsomeornamentals andnurseryseeds.

AlltheLayMissionPartners andtraineesareencouraged tousedurable,reusable containers,plates,and utensils.AllthePETbottlesand emptycartonboxesare collectedandsoldinnearby junkshops.

Anewrainwaterdrumandverticalgridwere fabricatedandinstalledintheTVET Department.

TheinstallationoftheRainWaterDrumstarted lastOctober15,2022intheRefrigerationand AirconditioningShopunderthesupervisionof Mr.IrielLucidos.Thisprojectisincoordination withtheAdministrationDepartment

Thedrumsareconnectedtotherestrooms thatsupplywatertotheirtoilets.

Thecollectedwatercomesinhandyin cleaningtheirragsandmops.Anestimated55 gallonsofrainwaterissavedthroughthis facility.Buyadrumoneatatime.

Studentswereinvolvedinthemanufacture oftheverticalgrid.

ThestudentsoftheFitterMachinistCourse (FMC)weretheoneswhoconstructedthe verticalgridwiththeassistanceoftheir adviser.Meanwhile,studentsfrom RefrigerationandAirconditioningCourse (RAC)andElectro-MechanicalTechnician (EMT)havebeentaskedtolookafterand watertheplantsintheirverticalgrid

DonBoscoTarlachassignificantlypromoted environmentalsustainabilitythroughvarious initiatives Withafirmcommitmentto protectingtheplanet,theschoolhas embracedrenewableenergy,established aMaterialsRecoveryFacilityimplemented urbanfarmingandfocusedoncapacitating stakeholders.

Inabidtoreduceitscarbonfootprintand relianceonnon-renewableenergysources, DonBoscoTarlacinvestedinthreeSolarPV systems.Thesesystemsharnesssolarpower andprovideapproximately50%ofthe energyrequiredforday-to-dayoperations. Thistransitiontorenewableenergyaligns withtheschool'sdedicationtotheprinciples outlinedinLaudatoSi',PopeFrancis' encyclicalontheenvironment

Recognizingtheurgentneedtoaddress plasticwaste,theinstitutionprocureda plasticcrusherandsetupaMaterials RecoveryFacility.

Thiseffortbeganwithsimpleyetessential stepssuchasprovidingproperwastebins andeducatingthecommunityaboutwaste reduction,reuse,andrecycling.Bypromoting wastesegregation,DonBoscoTarlacaimsto instillsustainablehabitsandcontributetoa cleanerenvironment.

Inanimpressivedisplayofself-sufficiency, theschoolhasembracedurbanfarming. Theconvent'sflourishingfarmproducesa rangeoffreshproduceandeggs,providinga sustainablefoodsourceforthecommunity.
