GRANT McCANN GOOD AFTERNOON, I AM DELIGHTED TO BE TAKING CHARGE OF MY FIRST COMPETITIVE GAME FOR ROVERS AT THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM. IT IS AN HONOUR TO BE TRUSTED WITH LEADING THIS TEAM AND I PROMISE TO GIVE 100 PER CENT TO LEAD US TO SUCCESS ON THE PITCH. It was a great start to the season at Southend United last Saturday, and to head into this fixture with three points already on the board is fantastic. The nearly 600 supporters backing us at Roots Hall were brilliant, and you can play a really big role for us this season. I’ve been here before for games and the Black Bank has been rocking, with the drum banging and you guys really getting behind the team. I want us to give you plenty to get behind, with a real attacking intent, but knowing you are with us will also help us get through the tougher times. We had to dig in a bit in the opening period at Southend, but I was really impressed with how we turned it up in the second period. Not many teams will go to their place and get all three points. I would like to thank everyone for their warm welcome since my appointment. It has been a busy six weeks or so getting up to speed, but the players and staff have been brilliant and ensured we were ready to go last Saturday. It was also really useful to get to meet plenty of you at the Supporters Club and North Branch AGMs,

Radio Sheffield’s managers’ special, at our open day and at games. I feel we have a squad which can challenge for promotion this season, and everyone at the club is focused on that aim. If the players, staff and supporters are united in that aim then we’ve got a really good chance. This is a team game, and everyone has a role to play. Those of you who were at Southend will have seen some of the talent Ali Crawford and Mallik Wilks brought to the team. We’ve tried to add a little bit more of a cutting edge up front to give us more options, and I feel we have a strong squad with real competition for places throughout. Enjoy the game.

THIS IS A CAMPAIGN WE CAN GO INTO WITH SOME REAL OPTIMISM, WHICH HAS ONLY BEEN ENHANCED BY LAST SATURDAY’S WIN AT SOUTHEND UNITED. It was certainly a dramatic match down at a sunny Roots Hall, and while I’m not sure my heart could cope with 10 minutes of time added on every match I hope the nearly 600 supporters who were down in Essex felt they got their money’s worth. The backing of everyone who made the long journey down was greatly appreciated by everyone at the club. It was great to get off to a win in Grant McCann’s first competitive match in charge, and I’d like to use these notes to formally welcome him along with his assistant Cliff Byrne and opposition analyst Lee Glover to the club. Grant was the standout candidate when we went through this summer’s recruitment process for a manager. He came to two job interviews with a clear philosophy for attacking and entertaining football, and having really done his homework on the squad - having looked back at all our matches from last season.

We’ve been busy off the pitch this summer, too. Today sees the launch of our new fan park, which is building on our area outside the Belle Vue Bar. With activities from 1pm, some of you reading this may already have sampled the entertainment and additional food options. With our family area repeatedly praised as leading the way in the EFL, we want our home games to be a complete experience where you can come down and find enough entertaining activities to keep you and the whole family busy for the whole day. It was great to see so many families down here for our open day, the highlight of which was almost 80 kids taking on our first-team on the main pitch. Everyone at the club takes great pride in our community work, and you could see how much the players and staff enjoyed the experience. Enjoy the game.

Y M M TO E W O R BEING A CAPTAIN ISN’T ALWAYS ABOUT BEING THE LOUDEST VOICE IN THE DRESSING ROOM, BUT SETTING THE BEST EXAMPLE BOTH ON AND OFF THE PITCH. Tommy Rowe has been handed the armband by new manager Grant McCann, and says it was a great honour to be given the responsibility to lead Rovers out in the 2018/19 campaign. “First of all it is a privilege, it’s a great title for any player to have but it doesn’t change much for the team as we all try to lead by example,” he says. “Heading into pre-season I was still getting fit and getting my sharpness back, I’ve known the gaffer a while and I was captain at Peterborough where we had a lot of success. “It’s a case of getting used to it now and taking it in my stride, I was surprised but the decision was made and now I will give it my all. “I’ll keep going about my business and leading by example, communication is a big aspect of it and I believe I’ve got most of the key skills needed in order to be successful.”

Rowe is one of several leaders in the Rovers squad, and he is keen to learn from former skipper James Coppinger when it comes to the finer details of the role.

“Copps has been my captain in the two years I’ve been here, and he’s done such a great job so I want to learn from him as much as possible,” he says.

“It’s difficult sometimes when a manager comes in as you have to get used to their ideas and philosophies but it was good to already know Grant and how he works,” he says.

“He has already pulled me to one side and told me that he’ll be there for me if I need anything, we get on really well and hopefully it will be a natural progression.

“I only knew him as a player when I was at Peterborough though so it is still different, the preseason has been good and everyone is enjoying it.

“I’ve had the captaincy before at previous clubs, I had it at a young age at Stockport, and then again at Peterborough, then it was a case of showing my leadership skills. I came into the game fairly young and learnt from a lot of experienced people around me and that helped.

“We have a new system is one which everyone has bought into, you have to be aggressive and look to get on the front foot.It’s a good way to play and hopefully we can get the best out of it this season with the squad we’ve put together.

“I want to help get the best from the group in terms of the standards in training and around the place, there is now more responsibility on me to do that.” The appointment of Grant McCann has seen Rowe reunited with his former Peterborough United teammate, something which made the transition easier for him at the start of pre-season. The pair were both part of a promotion winning side at London Road, and the midfielder hopes they can

“I think the manager’s understanding of the game is second to none, that’s been the thing when I was playing with him he knew how he wanted to play. He has set his stall out early on and the lads have listened well, we want to play good football and attack with a purpose.” The 29-year-old was originally a doubt for the start of the new campaign after undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury at the end of last season. Rowe is full of praise for the Rovers medical staff, after their hard work throughout the summer eventually saw him able to complete 90 minutes at Southend United, a game in which he also scored in. “It’s always good to not rush the recovery from an injury as it takes the pressure off, it allowed me to improve my strength,” he says. “In seasons gone by when I’ve had injuries I’ve tended to ignore medical advice and try to get back quicker, sometimes that can work against you. “It’s about getting the recovery in where I can as I’ve had a bit of a longer pre-season than normal and that meant I was ready for the Southend game.

"EVERYONE WANTS TO WIN PROMOTION AND PLAY AT A HIGHER LEVEL, WE HAVE THE QUALITY WITHIN THE GROUP TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT" “The staff here deserve huge credit, they worked hard with me and gave up a lot of their time to get me back fit. I’ve got my base fitness but the real fitness comes from playing games, I’ve come through all of the tests I’ve had and it’s nice to be able to make a full recovery.” New signings Mallik Wilks and Ali Crawford made their full Rovers debuts against Southend, with the former netting his first goal for the club in the 3-2 victory at Roots Hall. Rowe has been impressed with all of the new recruits brought in during the off-season, and believes Rovers now have a squad capable of challenging at the top end of Sky Bet League One. “Ali and Mallik have both been brilliant on and off the field, I’ve been impressed and I think they’ve got even more to show,” he adds. “We’ve been building here with players developing all the time, it would be great for Grant to come here and take us on to that next step. “Given how we performed last season, we analysed where we can improve and everybody is aware of the importance of getting it right this season. “It’s a long season ahead and we’re not going to get carried away, we’re going to stay level-headed, make sure we keep improving throughout the season, then who knows where that can take us. “Everyone wants to win promotion and play at a higher level, we have the quality within the group to be able to do that.”

RYAN ALLSOP TOP STOPPER

The former England under-17 international signed a three-year deal with the Chairboys this summer following his departure from AFC Bournemouth.

Allsop began his professional career with West Bromwich Albion, signing with their academy in 2007, before leaving The Hawthorns in 2011. He made his first appearance in English football with Leyton Orient in 2012, before leaving for the South Coast in January 2013 to join AFC Bournemouth. With the Cherries, Allsop helped to secure promotion to the Championship in 2012, but found much of his time later on at the Vitality Stadium spent on the bench, making just two appearances in the Premier League. Loan spells with Coventry City, Blackpool and Lincoln City, which included a Checkatrade Trophy victory with the Imps, followed, before his move to another former loan club Wycombe this summer.

SAM SAUNDERS MIDFIELD MAESTRO

The experienced midfielder could rack more than 500 career appearances this season.

Saunders began his career with Charlton Athletic and Fulham, but he would have to drop into non-league for his first taste of senior football, firstly with Welling United, before moves to Ashford Town and Carshalton Athletic. Saunders signed for Dagenham and Redbridge in 2005, spending four seasons with the Daggers, the second of which saw him help them to promotion from the Conference as they secured the title. He then signed for Brentford in 2009, spending eight years with the Bees, helping them to promotion from League One in 2014, and being inducted into the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hall of Fame upon his departure from Griffin Park. He moved to Adams Park in 2017, following a loan spell two years prior to that, helping the Chairboys to automatic promotion in his first season.

JOE JACOBSON DEFENSIVE ROCK

The Welshman is entering his fifth season with the Chairboys, following his arrival at Adams Park in 2014.

Jacobson signed for hometown club Cardiff City as a youngster, but after struggling to break through he made a move to Bristol Rovers in 2007. During his time with the Pirates, he was named Young Player of the Year as they secured promotion to League One. Spells with Oldham Athletic and Accrington Stanley followed, before a move to Shrewsbury Town in 2011, spending three years with the Shrews, where he made almost 120 appearances in blue and amber. He made the move across to Buckinghamshire in 2014, making the League Two Team of the Year in 2016 following a successful season at left-back, and he was a crucial figure in the Chairboysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; promotion from the fourth tier last season.

CRAIG MACKAIL-SMITH DEADLY STRIKER

After a successful first season with the Chairboys, the forward signed a new twoyear deal at Adams Park towards the end of April. Mackail-Smith began his career in non-league, first with St Albans City and then Arlesley Town, before joining with Saunders at Dagenham in 2004, scoring 15 goals in their promotion season from the Conference. This earned him a move to Peterborough United, where he would score 80 goals in 185 league games, helping the Posh to their double promotion from League Two to the Championship. His final season with Peterborough saw him help them to another League One promotion, this time via the play-offs. Spells with Brighton and Hove Albion and Luton Town saw him spend time away from both clubs back at Peterborough, with an international goal for Scotland coming during his time with Brighton. He signed a one-year deal with the Chairboys last summer, and after his fine form at Adams Park, he was rewarded with an extended deal following their promotion from League Two.

TWO MEMBERS OF THE CHAIRBOYS’ FRONTLINE HAVE PREVIOUS CONNECTIONS IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE, WITH BOTH PLAYERS SPENDING TIME IN THE RED AND WHITE OF THE ROVERS. The first of the links comes in the form of one of the most well-known figures of lowerleague football, although he is probably lesser known for his short but successful time with the club. Adebayo Akinfenwa spent a short time of 2004 with Rovers, signing in February, going on to make just nine appearances at Belle Vue, but scoring four crucial goals that helped Rovers to seal the Division 3 title, with the man commonly known as ‘The Beast’ scoring the goal to seal their promotion, grabbing the opener in a 2-0 win over Cambridge United. Despite wishes from the fans for Akinfenwa to stay, he instead opted for a move down south, firstly with Torquay United, followed by a very successful spell with Swansea City, scoring the first ever league goal at the Swans’ new stadium, then going on to score the winning goal in the LDV Vans Trophy at the Millenium Stadium in 2006. A brief move to Millwall was followed by Akinfenwa moving back and forth between Northampton Town and Gillingham, spending two successful periods with both clubs, before signing with AFC Wimbledon in 2014. In his second and final season with the Dons, Akinfenwa helped them to secure promotion to League One for the first time in their history, scoring a penalty with his last kick for the club in a 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle at Wembley Stadium in May 2016. He joined Wycombe later on that year, and after scoring 17 league goals last season, he helped them to secure the final automatic promotion spot. The second member of the Chairboys’ strike force to have played for both is Nathan Tyson, with his spell at the Keepmoat Stadium being much more recent. Tyson is now in his third spell with the Chairboys, after a loan switch from Reading, followed by a permanent move in 2004, scoring 42 goals in 78 games across his two periods at Adams Park. From there, he signed for Nottingham Forest, spending five years at the City Ground, before making a rare move in signing for Forest’s fierce rivals, Derby County. Tyson signed for Rovers in 2014, following a brief stint with Blackpool, quickly becoming a fan favourite at the Keepmoat, notably for

his goals against local rivals Scunthorpe United, scoring the winner at Glanford Park in October, before bagging a hat-trick on the final day against the Iron in a 5-2 win. Performances like that would see him named Rovers’ Player of the Pear in his first campaign with the club, however, injury curtailed his second season with the club, and he joined Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premier League for a season. Tyson made his return to the Chairboys at the start of last season, scoring seven goals in 28 League Two games on the road to promotion, and now he will be looking to get firing once more in the third tier this year.

MEMORABLE MATCH WYCOMBE WANDERERS

OCTOBER 29 2016

In what was an early season clash between two sides looking to achieve promotion from Sky Bet League Two, an entertaining affair saw both teams come away from the Keepmoat Stadium with a point in October 2016. It was Rovers who had the game’s opening opportunity inside the first 10 minutes of the game, with Will de Havilland’s outstretched leg diverting James Coppinger’s cross into the path of Niall Mason. Mason struck his shot well but his effort fizzed wide of Jamal Blackman’s post, with the Chairboys defence let off after Rovers early miss. It would be a let off they would be grateful for less than 10 minutes later, as Matt Bloomfield capitalised on a goalkeeping error to put Wycombe in front. Joe Jacobson’s cross in looked comfortable for Ross Etheridge in the Rovers goal, but he dropped the ball right in front of Bloomfield who was on his back and kicked the ball over his head and into the back of the net for a bizarre opener. Wycombe’s lead wouldn’t last all to long however, as Rovers were back level just before the half hour mark, with Tommy Rowe benefitting from a swift counter attack down field that would see him slot the ball past Blackman. He played a one-two with Coppinger, with

the captain swinging the ball in and Rowe managed to shoot under the on-rushing Blackman and into the empty net, with Rovers now in the ascendancy. Rowe then had a great chance to put his side in front as he got past the Wycombe defence with ease, but he looked on as his shot went just wide of the far post, but Rovers fans wouldn’t have to wait long before the goal they deserved came along. John Marquis’ piece of brilliance would be Wycombe’s undoing, leaving the defence stranded as he weaved his way towards goal, cutting back twice before finally firing into what was now an empty net

with four Chairboys players left on the deck in the process. The second half saw considerably less action, however from the only real shot either side had after the break, it would be Wanderers that would reap the rewards. Paris Cowan-Hall’s strike from the edge of the box was spilled by Etheridge into the path of Bloomfield, and he gratefully received his gift by slotting into the far corner, ensuring that they would be travelling back to Buckinghamshire with a share of the spoils in an entertaining encounter.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? This result for Rovers would be the start of a run that would see them lose just once in 16 games, with 12 wins and three draws, including a strong Christmas and New Year period, with notable wins against Grimsby Town and Notts County, before a 1-1 draw away at Mansfield Town on New Years Eve. Ultimately, Rovers would earn promotion back to League One at the first attempt, with a 5-1 win away at Grimsby and a 1-0 win at home to Mansfield sealing promotion in early April. Striker John Marquis would go on to win both the League Two Golden Boot and the Player of the Year award for the division, capping off a remarkable season for the forward in his first season in South Yorkshire. The Chairboys maintained their play-off push throughout the course of the season, winning their next six following their 2-2 draw with Rovers, with the seven results being a part of a 12-match unbeaten run that went on into the New Year, however they missed out on the final play-off place by a point to Blackpool on the final day. That didn’t deter them however, as they achieved automatic promotion in third place, like Rovers, last season, with former Rovers front man Adebayo Akinfenwa top scoring with 17 league goals.

NUMBERS GAME WHEN ARGENTINA WON THE WORLD CUP IN 1986 THEIR SQUAD WAS NUMBERED, MORE OR LESS, ALPHABETICALLY. FIRST CHOICE GOALKEEPER NERY PUMPIDO WORE NUMBER 18, WHILE THE NO.1 WAS NOT A GOALKEEPER BUT STRIKER SERGIO ALMIRON. SINCE ROVERS ADOPTED THE PRACTICE OF ALLOCATING SQUAD NUMBERS, AT THE START OF THE 2002-03 SEASON, THERE HAS BEEN NONE OF THIS LATIN AMERICAN QUIRKINESS: NO.1HAS ALWAYS BEEN WORN BY A GOALKEEPER, AND THERE HAVE BEEN SOME NOTABLE WEARERS OF THE NUMBER. The first owner of the No.1 was Andy Warrington, an often under-rated goalkeeper who joined Rovers in 1999. The club was then in the Football Conference and Rovers faced a struggle to regain their Football League place, which had been lost with relegation in 1998. Warrington had a key role in Rovers’ promotion season of 2002-03, playing in all but two games as the club finished third to earn a play-off place. In the second leg of a gripping play off semi-final at Chester’s Deva Stadium and with the scores level. Warrington made a crucial save to deny the home side a late winner. Then he saved two penalties in the shoot-out as Rovers marched on to the Final at Stoke’s Britannia Stadium. A 3-2 golden goal victory over Dagenham and Redbridge took Rovers back into the League, but Warrington’s contributions were far from over. In 2003-04 he was an ever-present and a key component in a miserly defence which conceded only 37 goals as Rovers won the Third Division championship. His Rovers career ended when he sustained a broken leg during a League Cup victory over Manchester City in September 2005, but he went on to play with distinction for Bury and Rotherham United before moving into coaching with Grimsby Town. Warrington’s successor as Number One was the vastly experienced Neil Sullivan, who arrived, initially on loan, during the 2006-07 season. Sullivan, capped 28 times by Scotland, had played in the Premier League for Wimbledon, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea before moving to Leeds United, from whom he

joined Rovers. He became a member of the most successful side in Rovers’ recent history, helping to win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in Cardiff in 2006-07 and then promotion to the Championship in 2007-08. Sullivan had been considered too old by Leeds manager Dennis Wise, and must have had great satisfaction when Rovers beat his former club 1-0 at Wembley in May 2008 to secure a return to the second tier of English football after a 50 year absence. Sullivan went on to play for Rovers until 2013, making a total of 217 first team appearances, and his final game was perhaps the most dramatic of all. He was in goal on April 22 2013 when Brentford’s Marcello Trotta slammed a last gasp penalty against the crossbar at Griffin Park with the score at 0-0. The ball was cleared upfield and James Coppinger scored the breakaway winning goal which secured the League One Championship for Rovers.- not a bad way to end your career. Sullivan moved into coaching with his former club Leeds United. Since that dramatic end to the 2012-13 season there have been four more incumbents of the No.1 jersey: Ross Turnbull (2013-14), Aston Villa loanee Jed Steer (2014-15), Ross Etheridge (2016-17) and the current holder, Ian Lawlor. Oddly enough the No.1 was vacant throughout the 2015-16 season despite Rovers fielding four different goalkeepers in first team games. Perhaps Rovers should have adopted the approach of that successful Argentina side and tried a striker in the No.1 shirt.

ROVERS 3-1 OLDHAM ATHLETIC Rovers’ U18 side opened their season with victory over Oldham Athletic to stretch their winning run in the league to nine games.

strike from Declan Baldwin who from a far distance curled the ball into the top-right corner, leaving the stretching Ogley no chance of stopping.

Rovers started brightly at Cantley Park and earned an early corner through Jack Watson who did very well to keep the ball upfield in a threatening position. New captain AJ Graves whipped the resulting corner into the box and the chance is headed over by the towering Foulkes.

Then came another flood of Rovers corners with the youngsters almost retaking the lead when Barnett’s shot was cleared off the line by an Oldham defender.

Harry Robinson was allowed room down the left wing which resulted in a cross into the box which was neatly extinguished by home goalkeeper Dec Ogley. Rovers then took the lead just shy of the 10-minute mark as another great corner provided through skipper Graves was scrambled on the goal line, but Watson ws there to provide the clinical touch to take the ball into the back of McFarlane’s goal. Oldham responded rapidly as they forced Ogley into a neat save with his legs as Max Norman pulled the trigger from close range. The Latics then pulled one back through an unstoppable

Stancliffe’s side retook the lead on the brink of half-time after Will McGowan fed off the scraps of Myron Gibbons’ initial shot, as he slotted home from close-distance. Simon Cooper’s Oldham side then came out with a point to prove in the second-half, but Rovers withstood the pressure with Ogley making some important saves to keep the teams advantage. Full-back Martin Smith Jr opened Oldham up with a sprint down the right-flank, leaving behind two defenders in the process, then played a ball across the face of goal but it landed straight at the feet of Latic defender who cleared his lines immediately. Rovers extended their lead courtesy of Gibbons who tucked the ball into the back of the night from a tight angle from the near-left-hand post.

KIERAN SCARFF THE SEASON SOON COMES ROUND, DOESN’T IT! It’s been a very busy and productive close season programme at the Academy, with much planning and preparation taking place for the season ahead. The Academy is going into the coming season in a real position of strength. Following our academy audit I have publicly spoken of my pride in being in the top 10 of category three academies in the country. This week I had the great news that we have in fact been placed fourth out of the 45 category three clubs. This is a huge achievement. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank everyone who has worked so hard to ensure we provide such a strong programme for all our young players. During the early part of the schoolboy programme our young players have already had the opportunity to challenge themselves in a variety of tournaments against a wide range of premier league, EFL and international teams. Our excellent staff continue to provide brilliant opportunities for the players and I look forward to seeing many more of these challenges in the season ahead. Our Under 18s have had a really positive pre-season. The new first year apprentices have settled in very well: reaping the benefits of having so much youth team involvement in the second half of last season. Following some strong performances in pre-season the youth team opened their Youth Alliance League account last week with a very strong 3-1 win over Oldham. Taking the outstanding run at the end of last season into account, that meant nine league wins in a row! The group

consistently show a real enthusiasm to improve and I look forward to seeing them develop further. Thanks to really positive support from our owners and chief executive we now have the ability to work with a number of younger professionals and they have all made really positive starts to their professional contracts. We already have arranged loan deals for some of them and with the U23 league soon to begin these players will be able to test themselves against a mixture of young and experienced professionals on a regular basis. This additional time for the player to develop and bridge the gap to first team football is vital and I am convinced this structure will see more young players playing in our first team which is any Academy’s ultimate aim. As an Academy programme it is vital to have a first team manager and staff who value the young players and provide opportunities for them. Already this preseason Grant McCann has shown, as I knew he would, that he will provide opportunities for the youngsters. Both he and Cliff Byrne have taken an active interest in the development of the young players. The players and staff really value and appreciate this. Good luck to the gaffer, the staff and the players.

SAFETY Staff at Doncaster Rovers and Club Doncaster are committed to ensuring the safety of all spectators and visitors to the Keepmoat Stadium. Staff are required to regularly review and improve operational plans and have a number of external audits and inspections by professional bodies to ensure spectator safety within the stadium. An area that has been highlighted is the emergency exit stairwell and disabled refuge in the centre of the West Standâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s concourse, which is being used as a standard exit route at the end of fixtures. While historically club staff have felt that this could be managed through stewarding, this has been highlighted as a risk by two independent audits and the recommended changes now need to be implemented. This will mean that the central stairwell in the West Stand can no longer be used as a general exit route from the stadium by members of the public and must only be utilised as an emergency exit. This will be stewarded and supporters will be directed to the correct exit routes. While club staff understand it will be frustrating for people who have used the stairwell as an exit route previously, they have worked with the authorities to see if there are ways to mitigate the risk by other means. The design of the stadium and intended purpose for this stairwell means it cannot be changed to a standard exit route. Members of the safety team have reviewed the exit capacities of the West Stand and the stairwells at either end of the stand will more than accommodate the number of supporters and therefore have had to ensure the central stairwell is used for the purpose of emergency exit only. Should supporters have mobility difficulties or have concerns about moving down the exit stairwells with the flow of supporters, a steward will provide lift access or assist you in leaving the stadium. A member of the stadium operations team will be in the West concourse at the end of Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s game against Wycombe Wanderers if supporters have any questions or concerns they would like to raise regarding the changes to the exit.

SUPPORTER LIAISON OFFICER DEAN MEDCALF GOOD AFTERNOON LADIES AND GENTLEMEN AND A WARM WELCOME TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM FOR OUR FIRST HOME GAME OF THE 2018/2019 SEASON AND A WARM WELCOME TO THE VISITING FANS FROM WYCOMBE WANDERERS. First of all, I would like to thank the 591 Rovers fans who made the journey to Southend United last weekend. What a game of football it was and the Rovers fans were in top voice and created a fantastic atmosphere. I would like to take this opportunity to explain a bit more of what my role is as the Supporter Liaison Officer (SLO) at Doncaster Rovers. We are voluntary Rovers fans who work as a communication link between the club and the fans and also vice versa. If you follow me on social media you will see me informing fans of future away games including ticket prices, travel information and other information about our away games. As well as information about up and coming home games as well as other important information that the club ask me to post and answering any questions you may have. I also have monthly meetings with the club and have regular conversations with different departments to give feedback I receive from follow Rovers fans and also to get questions answered. Before each away game I send an email to the SLO of the club we are visiting to collect information to help the Rovers fans get the most out of their visit. I write my away day blog that gives you all the information you will need before travelling. In these blogs, it shows ticket information, directions and parking instructions if you are travelling by car, as well as information regarding the supporters’ club coaches’ prices and departure times. If there is any more information you would like before away then please let me know. I also post blogs about other aspects of the SLO role such as attending meetings with the EFL and visits to other clubs to see how their SLO’s operate on match days.

Coaches will depart from Retford at 5.30pm, Harworth 5.35pm, Bawtry/ Rossington 5.45pm, Punches 5.50pm, Infirmary 6pm and the Keepmoat Stadium Car park 1 at 6.15pm.

Matty Blair helped the latest Fit Rovers inductees settle into their course recently, as he takes on his new role as ambassador for Club Doncaster Foundation’s flagship scheme. The Rovers midfielder welcomed 27 men onto the new course, helping them record their initial measurements of weight, height and blood pressure. Matty will be joining the men more regularly on a Thursday night at the Keepmoat Stadium, as they bid to follow in the footsteps of the eight previous courses who have between them lost an incredible amount of weight. Matty said “I’m delighted to be the Fit Rovers ambassador for this season: I spent quite a bit of time with the participants last year and really enjoyed watching them reach their goals, so to have more of a direct involvement this time round is great. “The programme is fantastic and I still can’t believe it’s free. The sessions I’ve witnessed are really professional and it’s such a relaxed environment to meet new people and reach your goals.”

As part of his role, Matty also visited the Fit Rovers vets session to keep an eye on how the men are progressing having already graduated from the course. Eighty-one men turned up at the Keepmoat Stadium, 54 of which were for the for the veteran sessions, which are run by Foundation staff and are exclusive for Fit Rovers graduates. Matty spent the rest of the evening discussing how they had maintained lifestyle changes up to 18 months after their course finished. Fit Rovers is Club Doncaster Foundation’s pioneering adult fitness course based at the Keepmoat Stadium, aimed at men over the age of 30, and is free of charge for participants. The follow on veteran sessions are available at just £2 and offer football sessions, circuits and various cycle routes around Doncaster. DATE Club Doncaster Foundation’s NCS graduates recently met the Secretary of State for Education in the UK Damian Hinds. They discussed the essential life skills they have developed while on their NCS Doncaster journey and how the programme has changed their lives. The discussion, staged at Bentley Youth Centre, was part of the Opportunity Area programme, which has been launched to offer sports, arts and cultural activities to disadvantaged young people in Doncaster. Hinds said: “The Opportunity Area programme is about broadening the horizons of young people from disadvantaged areas. I want every young person living in Doncaster to be able to access extra-curricular activities that build the resilience and character they need to fulfill their ambitions, whatever they are. “This investment will help young people in Doncaster learn the skills of leadership and teamwork that are so important later in life, giving them the boost in

confidence they need to succeed in education or the world of work.” NCS programme manager Jan Budtz added: “It was a privilege that our NCS graduates were invited to the launch and had the opportunity to shout about our NCS programme. “Some of our NCS graduates form part of the local DFE youth board, so it was a great chance for them to interlink the two programmes.” The £1million programme has been launched to improve access to sports, arts and culture for 5,000 disadvantaged young people across Doncaster. The funding includes £550,000 for a programme of summer activities in 2018 and 2019, which are free for participants aged five to 18. They include boxing, football, cycling, baking and many more ran by EXPECT Youth, Doncaster’s youth alliance which works closely with the Opportunity Area programme by delivering projects for the most vulnerable in the borough.
