IN CHARGE:
RICHIE WELLENS WELCOME TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM FOR OUR FIRST PAPA JOHN’S TROPHY GROUP MATCH OF THE NEW SEASON. Welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium for our first Papa John’s Trophy group match of the new season. I’d like to begin by welcoming Paul Warne and the staff, players, directors and supporters of Rotherham United to the Keepmoat Stadium for this evening’s game. We come into this game on the back of a free weekend due to international call-ups with many of our players getting some much-needed rest after a busy start to the season. It’s been great to have Jordy Hiwula back in training and looking as sharp as ever, and Fejiri Okenabirhie is getting closer to a return every day. We are also delighted to welcome Rodrigo Vilca and Joe Dodoo into the building. Joe is a player I know from playing alongside him at Leicester – he’s got the opportunity to come in here and be an out-and-out striker and make this club his home. This is a competition I have good memories of after winning it with Salford. It’s a chance for clubs at our level to go to Wembley and those opportunities don’t come along too often so of course we want to do well. We also recognise that this game has come at a good time for us to get minutes into players who need it as well as the new players who have joined us. It's a good chance for our young players to show what they can do Thank you, as always, for your support. Richie

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
IN OPPOSITION:
ROTHERHAM UNITED MEET THE BOSS:
PAUL WARNE Warne had a good career as a professional making nearly 500 appearances for a number of clubs between 1997 and 2012 including Wigan Athletic, Oldham Athletic and Yeovil Town, however the majority of his appearances were at Rotherham where he ended his playing career. On his retirement he took up a role as a coach at Rotherham and stayed in this role until 2016 when Kenny Jackett left the club as manager, and he took temporary charge.
In January 2017 Warne was appointed manager until the end of the season, however that became permanent in April of the same year. In the season Warne took over the Millers, they were already on the slide to relegation from the Championship, however they bounced back at the first attempt in 2017/18 as they won the Play-offs, and this pattern has followed ever since as they have bounced between the Championship and League One.

ONES TO WATCH MICHAEL SMITH
The 6ft 3 striker has been playing league football since 2011, however he seems to have made himself at home at the New York Stadium, scoring 36 times in 148 appearances. His physical presence makes him a handful, but don’t let that overshadow his actual ability with the ball where he brings others in to play to great effect.
KIERAN SADDLIER Rovers fans will know plenty about Sadlier and his ability with the ball and his ability to take a shot from long range, having played for us between 2018 and 2020. Following the expiry of his contract he joined Rotherham, however his first season was hampered by injury, now back to full fitness, Sadlier will be a handful for most League One teams with his direct style.
RICHARD WOOD Captain and defensive rock, Wood has now been at Rotherham since 2014 making over 160 appearances. Another player who stands at well over 6ft, he is known for his no nonsense style and also chips in with the odd dd goal.

BRANDEN HORTON When Branden Horton came on as a substitute at Sheffield Wednesday earlier this season, it felt as though he was making his league debut all over again.
“I do enjoy the gym and I knew the areas I had to get better on to be consistently in the team,” he says. “It helped having Louis Jones in there with me, it helped pass a lot of time during the off-season.
That is because when his first Rovers appearance in Sky Bet League One did come around last season, it was played behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Physicality is massive in football and especially in the position I play, you have to be ready for the strains you get on your body.
It was a celebration for the Horton family, who have pushed the 20-year-old to improve ever since his youth football days in his hometown of Askern.
“I feel better for it, and noticing those small differences in training and matches make it all worthwhile.”
“I much prefer playing in front of fans, especially as a local lad to see them back at the start of the season means a lot,” he says.
He was tested in pre-season when Rovers travelled to face Premier League side Watford at St George’s Park.
“Last season I came through probably with less pressure in the stadium, but I’ve really enjoyed the encouragement I’ve had from fans since they returned.
Coming up against Ismaila Sarr, a man who has caught the attention of several clubs across Europe, it was a learning curve for Horton.
“It sort of felt like a second debut at the start of the season, it was the first time I had played in front of a crowd. “My family were at the first game when I came on and to have them there made it very special for me. “I play football to make them proud so to have them there at every game means everything.” After his taste of first-team football towards the back end last season, Horton’s focus in the summer was on improving himself off the field. He spent time in the gym to build his physicality, with the aim on putting himself in the best possible position to be a regular in the side.
“Playing against him was a great experience, he’s so powerful and it showed me the levels I need to reach,” he says. “That’s where I want to be, playing against top wingers every week and really testing myself. “He was brilliant all game and I had to try to do different things to get the better of him. “Because he’s so quick I tried not to get into a foot race with him, with any player like that you try to show them inside to a lot of traffic.” Horton has been part of a Rovers side this season that has struggled for goals, despite several positive performances.
The message to the players has been clear - keep doing the right things in both penalty areas and the results will come. “We’re getting better with every game, results haven’t gone our way but that first win is going to be crucial for us,” says Horton. “Hopefully our blip has come at the start of the season, there is a sense that when we get that first win it will really kickstart our campaign. “You can’t win games if you don’t score goals, we’ve not done that enough so far which has hurt us at the other end. “We’ve kept it fairly tight at the back but obviously if we’re not scoring then it only takes conceding one and we come away with nothing.” Horton made his debut for Rovers in the EFL Trophy against Newcastle United in 2018, meaning the competition means a lot to him. He believes having a South Yorkshire derby against Rotherham United will add to the occasion, just 10 days after the sides last met. “I loved being involved in the derby when we played them, the atmosphere was brilliant and it was another tough game,” he adds. “It’s a great opportunity for young lads to play, and I think everybody has to look at it like that. “We’re not just there to play we want to win the game, we’ll give it our best to come away with a win. “It’s another South Yorkshire derby and it’s a chance to get one back on them for that, albeit against a very different side.”
