"WE HEAD INTO THIS MATCH IN CONFIDENT MOOD ON THE BACK OF A GOOD POINT AT PORTSMOUTH LAST WEEKEND, A MATCH WHERE WE VERY NEARLY TOOK ALL THREE POINTS"

GRANT McCANN GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM FOR TODAY’S GAME AGAINST PETERBOROUGH UNITED. Posh are a club who are close to my heart, having played for them before going on to coach and manage them. Their management pairing of Darren Ferguson and Gavin Strachan are also very familiar to everyone here at Rovers - I played under Darren at Peterborough, we enjoyed promotion to the Championship under him and he helped start me on my coaching path with the U15s at the club. I have a lot of time and respect for Darren and Strachs, and I’m sure we will enjoy a drink after the match no matter how it goes. We head into this match in confident mood on the back of a good point at Portsmouth last weekend, a match where we very nearly took all three points at the end. We stuck to our gameplan well and results elsewhere meant it was a very useful point in the end.

Today’s match starts a run of three home outings inside nine games, and we all hope to see plenty of you back for Tuesday night’s game against Southend United then next Sunday’s visit of Crystal Palace. Tickets have been selling well for all these games, and it’s great the club have kept prices at the lowest we are allowed for the FA Cup clash. I’d like to extend a special welcome to students from Sparken Hill Academy in Worksop who are here today as our guests after winning a competition with Trax FM. Donny Dog visited them earlier in the week to give them goody bags and invite them to the game - I hope you are our good luck charms! Enjoy the game.

The backing of almost 500 supporters at Fratton Park was fantastic, and it really does mean a lot to all the lads. We know it is not easy to get to all our games, and we’re determined to ensure we reward you with good performances and results.

"THE BACKING OF SUPPORTERS IN RECENT WEEKS HAS BEEN FANTASTIC, WITH ALMOST 500 MAKING THE TRIP DOWN TO PORTSMOUTH ON SATURDAY"

GAVIN BALDWIN WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM FOR THIS AFTERNOON’S EXCITING CLASH AGAINST PETERBOROUGH. I’D LIKE TO WELCOME DARREN FERGUSON AND GAVIN STRACHAN AS WELL AS THE SUPPORTERS, OWNERS AND STAFF OF THE VISITORS. DARREN AND GAVIN GAVE THIS CLUB SOME GOOD SERVICE AND WE WISH THEM WELL, AFTER TODAY OF COURSE. This afternoon’s game is an important one for both clubs, and for us the clear incentive is to get the three points which would move us back into the play-off positions. Thank you to everyone who came to Thursday’s regular Meet The Owners event, held here at the ground. Our media team filmed the event and it will be available on iFollow Rovers as well as the club’s YouTube channel soon if it is not already. We turned down some big money bids for John Marquis in transfer deadline day, but we have been clear from the off what a big role we think he has for us and how all parties feel his next career move should be to play in the Championship. Everyone at the club will give their all between now and the end of the season to try and ensure that is with us next year.

The backing of supporters in recent weeks has been fantastic, with almost 500 making the trip down to Portsmouth on Saturday. They were rewarded with a battling point which moved us closer to the play-off positions and helped maintain our strong recent form. We’ve also seen strong sales for next weekend’s FA Cup clash with Crystal Palace, don’t forget tickets go on general sale this Monday. We’re also back here on Tuesday night for another crucial league game against Southend United - it’s a busy spell for us, and we appreciate the demands put on supporters to get to all the matches, but it is a period which could really set us up for the final games of the season. Beat the queues by going to tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk. Enjoy the game.

Today’s match is our NCS matchday, where graduates and ambassadors from this summer’s NCS programme showcase some of the amazing activities they put on. This started from 1pm outside the East Stand, and will include a half-time parade - please give them all a warm welcome.

N A R E I K R E I L SAD KIERAN SADLIER GRABBED HIS SECOND CHANCE OF MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF IN THE EFL WHEN ROVERS CAME CALLING FOR HIS SERVICES. 26 goals in the League of Ireland Premier Division last season saw many clubs linked with the winger, but he knew he was destined for the Keepmoat Stadium after meeting with manager Grant McCann. “He likes to play very good football and so do I, so that is one of the main reasons I wanted to come here,” he says. “I got on really well with him during my time at Peterborough and he was a great player so I want to work with him and improve my game. “It was a massive decision for me at this stage in my career, I want to make an impact and I know that this is a club on the up. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here since joining the club, it took me a week or two to settle in and get used to the group.”

After signing at the start of December, Sadlier wasn’t eligible to feature for Rovers until the January transfer window opened.

“It was a great day all round for the club, getting through and making history by getting into the fifth round meant a lot to everybody.

Although it was frustrating at the time, it gave the West Ham academy product the opportunity to get to know his new team-mates in training.

“It gave me a taste of what the stadium is like during a big game, I wanted to make an impact and show the fans what I could do.

“It was tough and I had a little injury niggle but I’m fit now and I’ve had some game-time recently so it’s about kicking on from that now,” he says.

“It’s very competitive and the boys that have been playing up top are on fire so once you get in it’s important to perform well.

“The period of time before January gave me an opportunity to train with the lads and get to know them before I was able to play.

“After beating Oldham we all wanted a Premier League team, we’ve got that now and we’re all relishing the challenge.”

“I moved into a house with some of the boys during that period which made it feel like more of a home for me.

This afternoon’s game against Peterborough is one which brings up a lot of connections between the two clubs.

“Most of the clubs I have been at have had young groups so I’m used to that and it’s easier having people who are a similar age to me. “It’s a small world in football and everybody seems to know everybody, so I knew it wouldn’t take me long to bond with people.” The 24-year-old made his full Rovers debut in the Emirates FA Cup fourth round victory over Oldham Athletic in January. Playing in front of more than 11,000 people at the Keepmoat Stadium made it well worth the wait for Sadlier, who was determined to grab his chance with both hands. “Making my full debut in the Oldham game was brilliant, it was a good atmosphere with a lot of fans there and it was good to celebrate after,” he says.

"IT’S VERY COMPETITIVE AND THE BOYS THAT HAVE BEEN PLAYING UP TOP ARE ON FIRE SO ONCE YOU GET IN IT’S IMPORTANT TO PERFORM WELL"

Grant McCann and Darren Ferguson were in opposite dugouts this time last year, with Sadlier and Rovers’ captain Tommy Rowe having both played at London Road earlier in their careers. “Peterborough are one of my old clubs and I spent around eight months there, I didn’t play too much but that’s where I got to know Grant,” he says. “I don’t think there are too many people left there from when I was there but there are a few connections between the two clubs. “It means a lot because I don’t feel they saw the best of me, and I’ve improved as a player quite a lot in the past few seasons. “There is a lot of things in common with the two clubs so it might be strange for some people but it’s just another game for us.” With just two points separating the sides in the Sky Bet League One table, the game could prove to be a real six-pointer in the battle for a play-off place. Sadlier says the Rovers squad are relishing the challenge, knowing the difference that three points this afternoon could make.

"WE STILL HAVE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO ACHIEVE SOMETHING THIS SEASON, AND WE’RE IN A STRONG ENOUGH POSITION" “It could be both sides battling it out for a play-off spot so we know how important it is to take points off them,” he says. “I’d like to prove a point that I was good enough to play there, I always had faith in myself that I could play at this level. “We’ve got a couple of games in hand as well so it would be nice to put ourselves in a good position ahead of those. “You want to win every game at home and our form has been good, hopefully the fans will come out and back us. “Beating a team above you in the table, particularly at this time of the year, can give you some real momentum off the back of it. “The two teams both score a lot of goals and it promises to be an exciting game, we’ve got a good group of players who can win games in different ways.” Rovers have three games in the space of eight days which could put them in an even stronger position that they currently sit, with league games against Peterborough and Southend followed by the FA Cup tie against Crystal Palace. “A win over Peterborough would start off a big week for us, we have Southend in midweek and then a big tie against Crystal Palace,” he adds. “There have been times when we’ve dropped points late on in games which has prevented us from being higher in the table. “We still have a great opportunity to achieve something this season, and we’re in a strong enough position to be able to do that.”

FOUR TO PETERBOROUGH UNITED

CONOR O’MALLEY TOP STOPPER

25

The Irish stopper joined the Posh from League of Ireland side St Patrick’s Athletic in August 2017. After spells with Mervue United, Salthill Devon and Shamrock Rovers in his home country, it would be with St Pats where he would find success, helping the club to two FAI Cup wins in 2015 and 2016, saving two penalties against Galway United in the first of those finals. His time in Ireland didn’t go unnoticed, and he was picked up by then-Posh boss Grant McCann ahead of the 2017/18 season, but it has only been recently where he has started to progress into featuring regularly in the side.

ALEX WOODYARD MIDFIELD MAESTRO

04

Another man who has worked his way up the football pyramid, the Posh skipper is a former England C international. Woodyard began his youth career with Charlton Athletic and Southend United, before loan spells away from Roots Hall with Farnborough and Braintree Town. After a seasonwith Dartford and a year with Concord Rangers, Woodyard returned to Braintree, this time on a permanent deal, playing for the England C side during this time. The midfielder followed his manager Danny Cowley to Lincoln City and helped the Imps to the National League title in his first season, before helping them to win last season’s Checkatrade Trophy. Woodyard signed a two-year deal at London Road ahead of this season, and after impressive performances in pre-season, he was installed as Poshcaptain for the 2018/19 campaign.

14

ISSUE 19 v PETERBOROUGH UNITED

O WATCH RYAN TAFAZOLLI DEFENSIVE ROCK

05

A former Southampton youth academy product, the central defender has worked his way back into the EFL after time playing in non-league. Tafazolli joined Concord Rangers in 2011 following his departure from St Mary’s, going on to join Cambridge City the following year. He signed for Mansfield Town after a short stint with Cambridge, going on to enjoy four years with the Stags, and helping them to promotion from the National League as champions in his first season at the club. Tafazolli joined the Posh ahead of the 2016/17 season, signing a three-year deal at London Road, and he was named as the club’s Player of the Year after his debut campaign.

IVAN TONEY DEADLY STRIKER

17

The former Newcastle United man has been one of League One’s hottest prospects so far this season, and he is well in the hunt to be the division’s top scorer this year. His impressive form at hometown side Northampton Town as a youngster saw him attract attention from the top flight, and he moved to Newcastle United in 2015. Spells on loan at Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town and Wigan Athletic followed, with two temporary switches to Scunthorpe United also including two play-off semi-finals with the Iron in 2017 and 2018. Toney made a permanent move away from St James’ Park ahead of the start of this season, joining up with the Posh on a long-term contract. December was a particularly successful period for the striker, as he scored two hat-tricks in less than three weeks, with a treble against Bradford City in the FA Cup on December 11, before another three-goal haul against Accrington Stanley on December 29.

DONCASTERROVERSFC.CO.UK

15

THE CURRENT ROVERS SKIPPER PROVIDES THE FIRST CONNECTION BETWEEN BOTH THESE CLUBS WITH TOMMY ROWE ALSO ENJOYING A VERY SUCCESSFUL SPELL WITH THE POSH. Born in Wythenshawe, Rowe began his youth career with Manchester United, though after just a year, he continued his development with Stockport County for a further four years. He made his County debut against Watford in the FA Cup in January 2007, and he went on to make 85 appearances in all competitions at Edgeley Park. He helped them to promotion from League Two in 2008, also winning the club’s Young Player of the Year award for the 2007/08 season. In 2009, Rowe made the move to Peterborough United, signing for just under a quarter of a million pounds at the time, and after consolidating his position in the side during his first season and London Road, he really took off in his second. Alongside his current gaffer Grant McCann, Rowe made 50 appearances during the 2010/11 season as the Posh reached the League One play-off final which would be played at Old Trafford. He scored the opening goal of the promotion final at the home of his former club, getting the ball rolling for what would be a comfortable 3-0 victory for the Posh over Huddersfield Town, and he was appointed as Posh captain ahead of the 2012/13 season. That season would see the Posh break a points total record, though not one they’d have liked to hold, with the 54 points they accumulated the highest ever for a team to be relegated from the Championship with. Rowe and the Posh bounced back though, and they would visit Wembley the following season, facing off against Chesterfield in the Football League Trophy final in March 2014, with Peterborough coming out on top in a 3-1 win over the then-League Two Spireites, with Rowe lifting the trophy from the Royal Box. This would be one of Rowe’s final acts in a Posh shirt as he joined newly-promoted Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 2014, though

16

ISSUE 19 v PETERBOROUGH UNITED

with opportunities limited during the 2015/16 he made his move to South Yorkshire with Rovers, initially temporarily, after a brief spell on loan at Scunthorpe United. Rowe signed a permanent deal at the Keepmoat Stadium prior to the 2016/17 season, and he helped the club to bounce back to League One at the first attempt, playing every game in League Two and scoring the goal that sealed promotion in a 1-0 win at home to Mansfield Town. Rowe was named as team captain ahead of this current season, and he will be looking to add another promotion to his CV come May. The other connections between these two sides are also very fresh, with new Posh managerial duo DARREN FERGUSON and GAVIN STRACHAN being seen in the home dugout as recently as last season. The pair lead Rovers to that promotion from League Two and oversaw the 2017/18 season as well, taking charge of Rovers’ third round Carabao Cup tie against Premier League giants Arsenal. Ferguson himself is now embarking on his third spell in charge at London Road following the departure of Steve Evans last month, and the Scot was at the helm for the period of time that Rowe enjoyed success with the Posh. Ferguson junior led Peterborough to two promotions from League One, including that one at Old Trafford, something that was a particular highlight in his career, winning a trophy at the ground where his famous father, Sir Alex, had so much success over almost 30 years in charge of Manchester United. The duos’ arrival at London Road at the end of January ensures that this fixture will have an added edge to it, with both dugouts seeingbothmanagers come up against their former clubs, and with both sides firmly in the play-off race, the intensity will not show any signs of slowing down. Alex Gibbings

MEMORABLE MATCH PETERBOROUGH UNITED

MARCH 16 2010

Rovers came from behind to stun relegation-threatened Peterborough, with John Oster’s last-gasp winner giving his side hope that they could sneak into the Championship play-offs late on in the season. It was bottom side Peterborough who started the game the brighter of the two at London Road, Mark Little had a halfchance from the edge of the area, with his effort going just over the Rovers crossbar. Charlie Lee would then go even closer to opening the scoring, however Neil Sullivan was equal to his shot and cleared the danger away. Rovers were unable to get going in the first period, with Billy Sharp the only player in a red and white shirt causing the Posh defence any problems, with Joe Lewis saving well from Sharp’s shot. After the break it was much of the same, and it would be from a future Rovers player’s corner that the hosts took the lead. Tommy Rowe’s corner wasn’t dealt with at all well by the Rovers defence, and Lee was there to head the ball home, giving the home side the lead as they looked to close the gap between them and safety in the league table. It would be a moment of magic from Gareth Roberts however just 10 minutes later which would see Rovers draw level,

when at one time that seemed unlikely. Martin Woods’ cross into the area was cleared away by Craig Morgan, but only into the path of Roberts who was lurking on the edge of the area, albeit at a tight angle. He shot first time with the ball dipping, and volleyed past Lewis into the far corner with a powerful drive to level the score totally against the run of play. The Posh were now becoming desperate in their attempts to get back in front as

the game ticked on, with Craig MackailSmith seeing his shot from the edge of the area palmed away by Sullivan, and it would be a vital save to make, with Rovers snatching the win at the death. They broke away down the right-hand side with the ball played into the path of Sharp. The forward was unselfish and passed across the six-yard box to Oster who slid in to smash the ball home into the empty net, with Rovers going away from London Road with all three points in what was a real smash and grab.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? Rovers late win would see them move up the Championship table to eighth, just four points off the play-offs, leaving Rovers fans dreaming of what might be. It would be a tough run-in for Rovers however, with eventual champions Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion visiting the Keepmoat Stadium, with Rovers suffering narrow defeats in both. Two wins in the final nine games against local rivals Barnsley and Scunthorpe United wouldn’t be enough for them to maintain their play-off push however, but they would finish in a respectable 12th place in just their second season back in the second tier. Defeat at London Road would see Peterborough sitting bottom of the Championship, eight points adrift of Crystal Palace in 21st. They wouldn’t be able to make up the gap though, and they were relegated back to League One after just one season. The absence from the second tier wouldn’t be a long one though, as the man who would be a future Rovers boss Darren Ferguson led the Posh to play-off success against Huddersfield Town at father Sir Alex’s home ground, Old Trafford, going on to finish 18th in their first season back in the Championship. Ferguson and Rowe would later find themselves linking up at the Keepmoat Stadium, with Ferguson named manager in October 2015. Rowe followed soon afterwards, firstly with a loan move towards the end of the 2015/16 season, before making it permanent later on that summer, and the pair secured yet another promotion together, this time from League Two.

THE

NUMBERS GAME UNLIKE NUMBERS 6 AND 11, THE NUMBER 16 SHIRT HAS HAD MORE THAN ITS FAIR SHARE OF OWNERS SINCE DONCASTER ROVERS INTRODUCED SQUAD NUMBERS IN 2002. INDEED, FEW PLAYERS HAVE WORN IT FOR MORE THAN ONE SEASON, AS THOUGH IT IS SOMETHING TO BE DISCARDED AT THE EARLIEST OPPORTUNITY. NEVERTHELESS THERE ARE SOME INTERESTING CHARACTERS THAT HAVE SPORTED THE NO. 16 SHIRT IN THE LAST SIXTEEN YEARS. The first No. 16 was TRISTRAM WHITMAN (2002-03) a pacy striker who arrived at Rovers from Nottingham side Arnold Town in 2000. Perhaps his most notable contribution came in one of his final games for the club when he scored a last-gasp equaliser in the home leg of the Conference Play-off semi-final against Chester City. Rovers went on to win the tie after a penalty shoot-out at Chester and then beat Dagenham and Redbridge in the final at Stoke. The Essex club was to be Whitman’s next destination. J. J. MELLIGAN (2003-04), signed on loan from Wolves made 21 League appearances and scored twice, earning himself a Division Three Champions medal in the process. The shirt then passed between a number of short-term owners. MARK WILSON (2004), on loan from Middlesbrough but later to return for a more substantial spell at the club, Australian midfielder ADAM HUGHES (2005-06), loanee centre-back DAVID WHEATER (2006) and young defender ANTHONY GRIFFITH (2007-08). When Northern Ireland international DEAN SHIELS (2009) arrived from Hibernian in January 2009 he was given the No. 16 shirt but the following season he opted for No. 22. This did at least open the way for the shirt to have a longerterm owner. JOHN OSTER (2009-12) joined Rovers from Crystal Palace at the start of the 2009-10 season. The classy midfielder, capped 13 times by Wales, had extensive experience with Grimsby Town, Everton, Sunderland and Reading amongst others. He went on to make 120 appearances in total over the next three

JOHN OSTER

seasons, scoring twice. His goal output may not have been the best, but he was the creative fulcrum of Rovers’ midfield and provided plenty of assists for striker Billy Sharp. He left Rovers following their relegation from the Championship in 2012. Yorkshire-born centre back JAMIE MCCOMBE (2012-14) was signed from Huddersfield Town in the summer of 2012 and immediately formed a solid defensive partnership with Rob Jones. McCombe made 33 League appearances as Rovers won the League One Championship in the most dramatic fashion. It was McCombe who conceded the penalty from which Brentford’s Marcello Trotta hit the crossbar, the ball being cleared upfield for James Coppinger to score the winning goal. A bad injury forced McCombe to miss most of the 2013-14 season. Another centre-back, Doncaster-born ANDY BUTLER (2014-15) had the No. 16 shirt after arriving, initially on loan from Sheffield United. He made 33 League appearances and scored three goals in his debut season before opting for his current No. 6 shirt. For 2015-16 OSCAR GOBERN, on loan from QPR, wore the No. 16 in a handful of games, but another loanee, JORDAN HOUGHTON (2016-18) gave it some useful outings. A holding midfielder who had played for England at Under-20 level, Houghton had two loan spells with Rovers from parent club Chelsea. In 2016-17 he made 32 League appearances, helping Rovers gain promotion from League Two, although his season was truncated by a knee injury. He returned for a second spell in 2017-18 and came close to signing permanently for Rovers in January 2018. He is now with League Two side MK Dons. For the current season former Peterborough, Ipswich Town and Bradford City forward PAUL TAYLOR had the No. 16 shirt. JOHN COYLE

ACADEMY

This April the Academy U11s and U12s will travel to Milan to compete in a international tournament being held at numerous venues across the city. This trip forms part of the Academy's strategy to provide the players with the challenges they require to continue their development in competitive situations. The trip will take some of the players out of their comfort zone and will stretch them in more ways than one, being away from home and fully emerged in football for five days will be a new experience for many but will help to provide them with an opportunity to develop life as well as football skills. Although we are travelling primarily to compete in a football tournament we are hoping that the trip provides and opportunity for the players to develop emotionally, socially, to develop a sense of independence and to be able to use the experience to build resilience While away with the Academy coaches they will take part in analysis, psychology, social and football specific sessions all with the aim of providing the players with the best tools to be able to compete with teams from all over the world. This tournament complements our Academy mandate to provide an environment that aims to produce good people as well as good footballers. Many of the players parents will be travelling to Milan to support the boys but this will be a great opportunity for us to bond as a football team, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the parents as without them none of this would be possible The tournament itself will give the boys a great opportunity to pit themselves against a number of teams all of which will play the game in a slightly different manner and pose different challenges for our boys to overcome. As a staff it will provide us with a great environment to observe other coaches and share ideas around player development. Hopefully we will be able to develop relationships with European teams and coaches that could benefit our program for years to come. The boys will today be walking around with their buckets looking for contributions towards the cost of the trip, we wanted the boys to be involved in the process, not just expecting everything to be done for them, we want them to take ownership of this opportunity. Please engage the kids as they walk amongst you this afternoon and get to know some of the players that we hope you will all be supporting in the first team in a few years time.

Hello everyone! Welcome to our game against Peterborough United and thank you all for being here today. We are back in league action at home after beating Oldham in the FA Cup a couple of weeks ago. The joy at the end of the game and the atmosphere was great. Well done to you all for taking part in our flossing competition too!

SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:

AD-105x148-Football Foundation.indd 1

"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground

• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

SUPPORTER LIAISON OFFICER DEAN MEDCALF GOOD AFTERNOON LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, AND A WARM WELCOME TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM, INCLUDING THE VISITING FANS FROM PETERBOROUGH UNITED.

I would like to thank all the 480 Rovers fans who made the recent trip to Portsmouth, I hope you all had a safe journey and enjoyed the game. It has been a great couple of weeks for Rovers, especially in the FA Cup. The game against Oldham was a ‘proper’ FA Cup tie; it had it all, end to end football, goals, red cards and late drama. What an atmosphere we had for this game as well, an attendance of over 11,000 made it even more special. Now we have been drawn at home against Premier League side Crystal Palace and let’s hope we can get the same crowd, atmosphere and result in the fifth round. Tickets for this game are on sale now for Season Membership holders and members

and will go general sale this coming Monday). I recently attended the Supporters Club AGM at the Intake Social Club; the main focus of this meeting was to discuss safeguarding of young fans travelling on the supports coaches to away game. Following this meeting, there will be a few changes made to the rules and regulations for young fans travelling. I would like to stress that these changes are not being made to put our young supporters off from travelling on the coaches, but it is to make sure that they are safe and looked after. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity as well to wish my granddad, Keith, a very happy 74th

birthday for last week! Last Sunday also marked the anniversary of his very first Rovers game 70 years ago! The day after his fourth birthday, he attended his first Rovers game at Belle Vue which saw Rovers beat Bradford City 2-0 and 70 years later let’s hope for a similar result today. As always I hope you all enjoy today’s game, if you have any questions then please contact me on the usual SLO social media accounts, @SLO_DRFC on twitter, DRFC SLO on Facebook or you can email me at dean.medcalf@ clubdoncaster.co.uk. If you are a loose end and have any programmes or football books that you want to get rid of, we can collect and take them to the supporter’s club shop. Hope you enjoy the game. Rovers Till We Die Paul Mayfield

VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

FOUNDATION UP FIT ROVERS PROGRAMME ‘THE ONE’ FOR MARK METCALF

Fit Rovers participant Mark Metcalf has heaped praise on Club Doncaster Foundation’s showcase fitness programme, regarding it as a “brilliant programme”. Metcalf, who recently finished the eight-week programme on course ten with fantastic results, has tried and tested a few fitness programmes before, but has stuck with Fit Rovers because of the variety of sessions, the educational lessons and the overall friendliness of the staff. When asked why he chose to do Fit Rovers, Mark was quick to point out the difference between Fit Rovers and other programmes. “I think one of the main things is the support that you get at Fit Rovers,” he said. “A lot of these other fitness programmes will be a scheduled

40

ISSUE 19 v PETERBOROUGH UNITED

time to do some sort of exercise, which is great, but there is no real backup to that. “The educational sessions are a big credit to the staff at Fit Rovers. Other programmes wouldn’t tend to offer that sort of thing.” Mark lost an incredible 5.7kg on the programme, while also increasing his physical activity and reducing his alcohol consumption, and has put this down to the delivery of the programme. “With the exercise sessions you’ve got so much variety. You’ve got the option of circuits, football, rugby and boxing. When I first came along I thought Fit Rovers would be predominantly football, but I’m glad it isn’t,” he said. “I think, as a whole, it’s a brilliant programme. It has been the most

enjoyable programme I’ve taken part in and I’ve taken part in a few.” Fit Rovers has been a breath of fresh air for Mark, who wanted to thank the staff for all their hard work. “The staff are a huge credit to the programme. They really do take a genuine interest in me and the other guys,” he added. “I fully recommend this course, even for people who don’t want to lose weight and just maybe want to be educated around what they should be eating, levels of drink intake and so on. It’s such a well-rounded course.” For more information on Fit Rovers please call 01302 764663 or email fitrovers@ clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk

DATE Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann took the time to visit Fit Rovers recently, giving some useful advice and guidance around goal setting and motivation to the current Fit Rovers course. The Rovers boss was present during the Fit Rovers vets circuit session, talking to participants whilst witnessing more than 60 men complete the hour-long fitness session.
McCann then gave a question and answer session to the current Fit Rovers course, focussing on motivation and goal setting. Using his experience in the footballing industry, participants were able to apply what the former Premier League midfielder said about setting goals and how to apply it to their lifestyle. Participants were then given the chance to quiz McCann Go behin on how he motivates his d th s c e nes with e players and monitors Grant at Fit Ro their progression v throughout the latest ep ers in the isode of season. vers, ava e on iFollo ilable now wR on Rove overs and rs’ YouTu channel be

McCann visited the footballing session on offer to the vets from 8pm-9pm every Thursday, having been left thoroughly impressed by the success of the entire programme.

Rovers already have a strong connection with Fit Rovers, with Andy Butler and Matty Blair having established good relationships with the participants and staff members, with the latter the current Fit Rovers ambassador. McCann is just the latest high-profile name to speak highly of the men’s fitness course.
