THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

DARREN MOORE Good evening and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I would like to welcome Sol Campbell, as well as the fans, players and staff of Southend whom have travelled up tonight. Sol inherited a team that were in a very difficult position, as we saw first hand when we travelled to Roots Hall for the reverse fixture back in October. Sol had been appointed just before that game and although he will not have enjoyed watching from the stands, I am sure he learnt a lot that he has been able to implement. I spoke briefly to Sol, as well as Andrew Cole and Hermann Hreidarsson, after that game to wish them well and look forward to catching up in my office tonight after the final whistle. Thank you to everyone who travelled up to the Stadium of Light on Friday night, a match we have come away from with a welldeserved point. Both teams cancelled each other out, really, and and while we probably edged the first half we also had to dig in at times in the second period. The back five are receiving a lot of praise, and rightly so, but we defend as a team and attack as a team - there are times when Niall Ennis playing as a forward closes someone down to win the ball back and moments when Seny Dieng's distribution starts a move which leads to a goal. The players give everything for each other, which is fantastic for me to see and should give everyone plenty of encouragement for the rest of the season. I hope to see some of you back here tomorrow night when our U23 side take on Aston Villa. They are on the back of an excellent win at Portsmouth last week and are looking to complete the double over the Premier League visitors to seal a place in the knockout stages of the Premier League Cup - it would be a fantastic achievement for them if they do that. Entry is free for Season Membership holders, and just ÂŁ3 for adults. Enjoy the game.

THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

CHIEF EXECUTIVE

GAVIN BALDWIN Good evening and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I would like to welcome the supporters, owners players and staff of Southend United whom have made the trip up from Essex today.

It was no surprise to see Tom Anderson given the Man of the Match award at Sunderland on Friday night

It is fantastic to be able to write these notes after another fantastic performance, this time at Sunderland on Friday evening. The players and coaching staff deserve immense praise for the organisation and hard work that has seen us have such a positive start to 2020. The performances have been built on a solid backline, and it was no surprise to see Big Tom Anderson get Man of the Match at the Stadium of Light on Friday evening. Tom has been fantastic for us, which is why we wanted

to reward him with an extended contract. Securing Tom and Ben Whiteman on long-term contracts were real boosts for us heading into 2020, followed up by extending the loans of Seny Dieng and Ben Sheaf until the end of the season. We have been looking to add to the squad this transfer window, and while we as a club have avoided adding to the speculation that is out there we hope to have some positive news on our official channels as the week progresses. Congratulations to the children

from Dunsville Primary and Howen Junior School who took part in the Foundation’s Kids Cup held here at Club Doncaster Sports Park on Friday - they reached the final which will be played on the main pitch here at the Keepmoat Stadium prior to the game against Rochdale in a few weeks. Enjoy the game.

FEATURE:

MADGER GOMES Madger Gomes has had to be patient for a run in the Rovers midfield, but hasn’t let anybody down when called upon by manager Darren Moore. 09 As well as being reliable, he is capable of playing in several positions – something which has proved valuable as the season has progressed. “I feel I have done well but I want to play more, but that is the manager’s decision and all I can do is give my best when I get an opportunity,” he says. “The aim for me is to keep improving, I try to take on board everything he asks of he and continue to learn as the season progresses. “I enjoyed being in the team over Christmas and I treated every game like it was a final because I knew I had to do well. “However I’m involved whether that’s from the start or off the bench, the aim is always to give my all for the team.

“I feel I have qualities on the ball that can benefit us, and I want to repay the faith shown in me by the manager. “I’ve been used in a couple of different positions and I’m happy to play wherever as long as I’m out on the pitch.” After starting his career in the English game with Liverpool, Gomes moved abroad to find a route into first team football, playing in his native Spain and in France along the way. The 22-year-old always had in his mind a plan to return to the UK though, and jumped at the opportunity to sign for Rovers in the summer. “I feel really happy here, since I came here everyone has tried to help me and that has ensured I settled in quickly,” says Gomes.

“In my mind I always planned to come back to England at some point, I like the football played here and the football suits me. “When the club called me and wanted to sign me the decision was a fairly simple one to sign the contract. “In England the football is different to Spain, when I came here as a teenager it took me time to adapt but that made me a better player.” Being a footballer in the modern ere requires plenty of sacrifices, and Gomes is no different with the way he has moved away from his family in Spain to forge a career for himself. While he is focused on all things on the pitch, he admits it can be difficult being so far away from home at times. “I have had to learn a lot of things for myself being away from home, I have to work hard and that makes me appreciate everything I have,” he says. “It is difficult being away from family and I don’t get to spend much time with them, I don’t know many people around here so I have a lot of time to myself. “My brother tries to come over as often as possible, but it is difficult for my mum because she works all the time. “The hardest time away from them was probably over Christmas, but once we had a break afterwards the manager allowed me a few days to go home and see them.

GOMES

F E AT U R E I N T E R V I E W

“I have some good friends within the group, the majority of us are a similar age so enjoy the same things away from football. Knowing them makes it easier for me to relax, I have friends in Liverpool and Leeds as well which is nice.” Having joined the club just a few days before former manager Grant McCann’s departure to Hull City in the summer, Gomes says he wasn’t sure what to expect when he arrived for pre-season training. He couldn’t have asked for much more though since Darren Moore’s arrival, with the manager willing to put his faith in younger players as much as possible. “Signing for one manager and then coming into pre-season with another one in place was a new challenge for everyone and one that we embraced,” says Gomes. “I think it helped me because it was a fresh start and a chance to impress, and we have all taken that in our stride since the summer. “The manager is one of the best I have worked with in terms of the way he is with the players and how he carries himself.

always listen to him. It is important to make everyone feel part of the squad, and that’s why we have had a good season up to now.”

“He has a lot of respect for us and the amount of detail he goes into with the analysis of things is incredible.

As well as improving on the ball, Gomes is looking to get better at working without it as well – he points to former club Liverpool as a fine example of how to do it best.

“He stays calm whether we have done well or not so well, which is why the players

“Playing in different positions will develop me as a player and mean that I have more of a chance of being involved,” he adds. “I think football in the modern era means that you have to be just as good off the ball as you do on it. “You can do well on the ball and have the possession but the opposition can frustrate and have one chance which they take. “If you look at Liverpool, they are the best team in the world at present because of what they do with and without the ball. “They are patient with the ball but once they lose it they are so aggressive and keen to win it back as quickly as possible. “I think we can get into the top six if we find that consistency in our game, we’ve have shown in phases how good we can be. “We’ve still got two games in hand on the teams around us so we know we are in a position where we can push on.”

SOUTHEND UNITED:

FOUR TO WATCH MARK

OXLEY The Sheffield-born keeper has established himself as Southend’s first-choice goalkeeper since joining from Hibernian in 2016. At the end of the 2017/18 he won the fans player of the season award and was later awarded with a new three-year contract that summer. Subsequently the 6ft 3in shot stopper was named club captain, but Dieng has recently taken that role.

TIMOTHEE

DIENG

Versatile midfielder who can also operate in defence learnt his trade in his native country of France. He moved to England in 2014 to sign for Oldham Athletic before later joining Bradford where he spent four-years of his professional career with the respective clubs. His next adventure took him to Essex when he signed for the Shrimpers in 2018.

JASON

DEMETRIOU The Cypriot was signed by the Shrimpers after his departure from Walsall in 2016. He is a commanding defender who can also chip in with goals at the front end of the pitch on occasion. In 2017/18 he scored eight goals for the club. He is captain of Cyprus’ national team after representing his home nation on the big stage since 2009.

STEPHEN

HUMPHRYS Still just 22, Humphrys got off to a flyer on his arrival at Roots Hall netting a brace on his debut during a 4-0 win at Bradford. A month later he scored a goal against Accrington Stanley and former Rovers goalkeeper Jonny Maxted. As he won a header, he fractured a cheekbone and eye socket in addition to breaking 15 bones in his face.

SHARED 5-A-SIDE MARK PRUDHOE

Began his career at his boyhood club Sunderland but struggled making an impact in their first-team and was forced to move around the country for regular games. In 1984 a move to Walsall came around but limited action with the Saddlers led to him going out on loan six times – his first taking him to Belle Vue. He appeared five times for Rovers on a short-term loan. Towards the end of his career he joined Southend for one season, making a handful of appearances but left for Bradford at the turn of the millennium.

STEVE YATES

The left-back made almost 300 career appearances, most of which came from his six-year stint at Southend which saw him feature 225 times, scoring eight times.

16

He transferred to Rovers in 1983 after his stay at Roots Hall concluded and played in 44 games for Rovers, scoring only the once across two seasons. During his time in South Yorkshire he was also loaned out to Darlington and Chesterfield.

DAVID ROCHE

As well as featuring for Rovers and Southend in his career, Roche also starred in Peterborough and Newcastle’s midfield. It was Newcastle where Kevin Keegan sanctioned a transfer to South Yorkshire which brought eight goals across 58 games. Later he was sold to Southend, making four substitute appearances before retiring from football.

BILLY PAYNTER

Southend tried before they bought Paynter in 2006 when they loaned him from Hull City. They made the move permanent that summer but the Liverpudlian only played eight times without scoring which led to a move to Swindon where he had the most prolific spell of his career. He signed for Rovers in 2012 and will be fondly remembered by supporters for assisting James Coppinger’s famous last-minute goal against Brentford in 2013 to earn promotion to the Championship.

WAIDE FAIRHURST

The Sheffield-born striker came up through Rovers’ Academy, playing a sporadic role in his three-years as a pro. He made his debut during a 1-0 loss to Coventry City when he replaced Mark Wilson. To get experience of men’s football, Fairhurst was loaned out to Southend in 2010 but did not score during his time there. Since his release from Rovers he has spent his career in non-league football.

PAST RECORD PAST PASTRECORD RECORD

This evening's clash will have to go some way to match the drama of October's reverse fixture, which saw eight goals and two red cards. Sol Campbell watched from the stands as his new side fell to a 7-1 defeat, with Kwame Thomas scoring twice along with goals from Ben Whiteman, Kieran Sadlier, Alfie May and two own goals from the unfortunate Nathan Ralph to seal the victory. Outside of that meeting, the most memorable meeting from a Rovers viewpoint was the 5-1 win in the second leg of the League One play-off in May 2008. James Coppinger hit a memorable hat-trick as Rovers secured their place in the Wembley decider. Rovers secured a double last season, with a 3-0 win at the Keepmoat Stadium following a 3-2 opening-day success at Roots Hall. And there was a memorable day for Ben Whiteman in October 2017 as he hit a hattrick in a 4-1 success.

ROVERS MANAGERS

IN THE HOT SEAT:

DONCASTER ROVERS MANAGERS FROM 1920

KERRY DIXON (1996-1997) The appointment of Kerry Dixon as player-manager on the opening day of the 1996-97 season came as a surprise to all concerned. Dixon had no previous managerial experience but had enjoyed a fine playing career with Reading, Chelsea, Southampton, Luton Town, Millwall and Watford. At Chelsea he scored 147 League goals and earned eight England caps, two of them in the 1986 World Cup Finals in Mexico. Dixon inherited from Sammy Chung a team with few close season additions, the most notable being Paul Birch, the former Aston Villa and Wolves midfielder.

Rovers to a 2-0 victory. Although Birch was soon packed off to Exeter City, team morale improved, and Rovers went on to record five wins from eight games. They didn't secure their League status until their penultimate fixture, which they lost 0-1 in an emotional game at Brighton’s Goldstone Ground. Other results that day ensured Rovers would play in Division Three for another season.

Rovers made a poor start and were bottom of the Football League after only one win in the opening nine games, but thereafter enjoyed a decent spell. With Brighton rooted to the foot of Division Three, Rovers seemed to have little to worry about regarding the threat of relegation to the Conference. However, a Brighton revival coincided with Rovers’ miserable return of two points from seven games during January and February 1997.

Few people would have accepted such a public denunciation, but Dixon stayed on. His key players- Colin Cramb, Darren Moore and Player-coach Jon Schofield- were sold off and Richardson plugged the gaps with more non-League signings. In the third game of the season Rovers suffered a humiliating 0-5 home reverse at the hands of Peterborough United. Supporters demonstrated against Richardson at the end of the game and Dixon, who seemed to have no say in team matters, decided enough was enough.

The turning point came in late February, in the unlikely setting of the Park Hotel. At a supporters’ forum Dixon was asked about the absence from the team of Paul Birch. The manager explained that he had been ordered to omit Birch by the club’s de-facto owner Ken Richardson. Mark Weaver, the club’s General Manager and someone viewed as Richardson’s right-hand man, agreed to ask Richardson to allow Birch to play. The evening demonstrated who really held power over team matters at Belle Vueand it certainly wasn’t Dixon! Birch was duly restored for the home game with leaders Wigan Athletic and he inspired

Dixon had emerged as a bit of a hero with fans, but Richardson decided to record his view of history. In the programme for the final home game, Weaver wrote an article claiming that Richardson’s signings and tactical input had really saved Rovers. Dixon, on the other hand, had been found wanting as a manager. The article failed to point out that most of the new boys were non-League players of limited ability and that Dixon was hugely popular in the dressing room.

Kerry Dixon did his best in almost impossible circumstances: his best players were sold off and he experienced interference in his team selection. Injury prevented him from contributing much on the field- he scored three goals in 16 League appearances- but he did seem able to inspire his players to perform despite the problems off the field. Eventually he realised he was fighting a battle that no manager could win. John Coyle

21 U18 striker Jack Watson says he learnt a lot from his time on loan at non-league side Staveley Miners Welfare. The second-year scholar spent the Christmas period on work experience with the Northern Counties East League team and he felt he benefitted from time with manager Brett Marshall and his players. He said: “It was a different experience with Staveley. There were new faces and it was good seeing different views of how to play. “The move wasn’t necessarily about getting game time, but it was more aimed at me developing and seeing different views. Until then I hadn’t been in a first team dressing room environment so it was good. “The mentality was different compared to playing in the U18s division because the set-up was more about winning at all costs and

looking at more of the development side. You could see people’s mindsets and how they take on games as well. All that made the experience more valuable.” Watson hopes his hard work will help him secure a professional deal at the football club come the end of the season. He added: “Hopefully I do get a deal and I can take all the development that I learnt at Staveley into my pro career. “I don’t know what the coaches are thinking but all I can do is work my hardest and keep believing that I can get there.” Watson hit a brace as the U18s beat Peterborough United in a friendly last weekend.

"The mentality was different compared to playing in the U18s division because the setup was more about winning at all costs and looking at more of the development side"

Hello everyone! Welcome to our game against Southend United and thank you to all our visitors who have travelled today. I enjoyed the latest video on DDTV which included my kennel and all the exciting things we can do. At the last game we had the participants promoting the Fit Rovers programme. Well done to everyone taking part and thanks to the Foundation team for their hard work.

Enjoy the game, Donny Dog

DONCASTER BELLES

New Belles manager Andy Butler says he has learnt plenty about his side in his first two weeks in charge. Butler was on the sideline for the first time as the Belles lost out to higher division Huddersfield Town in the Sheffield and Hallamshire FA County Cup last weekend, then again as they faced Burton Albion in the league on Sunday. “I think I can take a lot from that first game, we had one training session with the girls to get to know each other but I think they all did really well in certain aspects of the game,” he said. “There are others they need to improve on for sure but I saw signs of progress. We’re not going to be playing against teams with that sort of quality week in week out, so for me there’s loads of positives to take on. It’s a challenge for us to kick on with until the end of the season.

“I think the girls can see for themselves that they’ve listened to the instructions, I thought we did really well and sometimes you’ll play teams that are better than you - as long as you work hard I can’t ask for any more. “We said it in the changing room after the game, you learn from those defeats and we told them not to get too low - you always have to stay levelheaded, never too high or too low. “They worked hard in training and we’re sure they will do again now, we’ve got plenty of time to work on their formations and on their shape between now and the next league game, I am pleased with what I’ve seen so far. You take challenges on and we have plenty of time now to work and I’m sure the players will respond to that.”

"I thought we did really well and sometimes you’ll play teams that are better than you - as long as you work hard I can’t ask for any more"

Good evening all and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium as we host Southend United in Sky Bet League One. Sol Campbell’s team linger in the bottom three and have a mountain to climb to get out of the danger zone. Anything goes on a cold, wet Tuesday night, though, so Darren Moore’s men will need to be on their A game to get points on the board. This evening we are delighted to welcome match sponsors International Parking Systems UK Ltd (IPS). IPS are a wholly owned subsidiary of IPS Group Inc, based in San Diego, with UK headquarters in Doncaster and are a smart city technology provider, providing smart parking payment terminals as the prime product. Uniquely in the parking industry, IPS also process credit and debit card

payments which provides a one stop shop solution for the owners of their products. Based at Railway Court in Doncaster, IPS bring true Smart Cities technology to South Yorkshire and are pleased to be supporting Rovers in the journey back to the Championship. Contact the sales team on 01302 230555 or uksales@ ipsgroup.com www. ipsgroup.com for more details. Sponsoring a game is a great way to showcase your brand, entertain clients and enjoy excellent hospitality. SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:

"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground

• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

Good evening and welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium and a very warm welcome to all the visiting fans from Southend United. SLO SEMINAR During December I attended the annual EFL SLO seminar which is held at EFL House, in Preston. It is an opportunity for all the SLOs in the north of the country to get together, discuss our roles and share best practice. The day started with a presentation from the Independent Football Ombudsman (IFO), this was to discuss the process of raising issues and complaints with the IFO. Following on from this we had an update on match day safety and security by the EFL’s security and operations advisor, this is always an interesting discussion as it is around how the

SLO’s work with the safety teams at different clubs. The day finished with a workshop on safeguarding and looking at different reallife scenarios. Safeguarding is something that we take very seriously here at Rovers, if you ever come across any safeguarding issues please get in contact with myself, the stewards or our safeguarding officer. As always it was an enjoyable event and great to discuss many aspects of the role with my fellow SLOs. EFL NEWSLETTER Following the meeting, the latest edition of the SLO newsletter was released by the EFL and included in the newsletter was a great piece on the clubs new first time fans / away fans video guide. Many people on the day of the meeting came to chat with me about the video and all had great things to say about it. As far as I am aware, we are currently the only EFL club who has such a video and

hopefully following the meeting and the release of the newsletter it will encourage a few other clubs to produce a similar video. If you have not yet seen the video, it is available on my social media pages, the club’s first-time fan page on the official website and the club’s YouTube account. I am always looking for people opinions on the video, so if you have any feedback then please get in touch! CONTACT DETAILS As always if you have any questions or feedback then please contact me on the usual SLO social media outlets, @SLO_DRFC on twitter, DRFC SLO on Facebook or you can email me on dean.medcalf@ clubdoncaster.co.uk. I hope you all enjoy today’s game and have a safe journey home. Rovers Till I Die Dean Medcalf Supporter liaison officer

SUPPORTERS CLUB

SUPPORTERS CLUB A big warm welcome to all the supporters for tonight’s game. Especially we would like to welcome to all the Southend United supporters who have made the trip up to the Keepmoat Stadium, I hope they enjoy their day out with us, and like the experience besides the result. We had a fantastic 7-1 victory down at Roots Hall, but don’t expect anything near that scoreline tonight, they had a great victory at Accrington a week last Saturday. Sol Campbell has a hard task ahead of him, but they won’t go down without a fight. We have a good rapport with the Shrimpers fans after our League One play-off games a few years ago, although we won convincingly that night, their fans never stopped giving their team support right to the end. Again this season we will be running coaches to all home and away games, the sheet with times and prices on are included in the programme but are subject to change. We have tried to keep the prices as low as we can but had to introduce a travel policy for under 16s who have to have a responsible adult travel with them. Fans who are 16-17-years-old need a consent form from their parents or guardians to travel. These can be downloaded from the Supporters Club website, on the bus or at the Supporters Club office based in the Club Doncaster Academy. As always we will run the home match bus from Retford, Harworth and Rossington Styrupp and Labour club,

times are 1pm (6pm) 1.20pm (6.20pm) and 1.30pm(6.30pm). Times in brackets are night games, and there is no need to book. For fans’ safety we will be picking up on the inner circle adjacent to Car Park 2 this season, so you can leave your car there. You can join the Supporters Club on the bus and get discount straight away, or join online or at the supporters shop located in the Club Doncaster Academy. The price is £7 adult and £5 concessions. Call Paul on 07961727769 or Len on 01302 817347 for more details and bookings. The North Branch also run coaches to most away games, from the Adwick, Carcroft, A19 corridor area. If you wish to travel with them call 07780316923. They are a great set of lads and lasses, and do a lot of raffles to support local charities. As in previous years the Supporters Club are having weekend trips away, the North Branch will be stopping in Blackpool for the Accrington game and the Retford Branch will also be stopping in Blackpool for the last game of the season at Bloomfield Road. Call Paul on 07961727769 if interested. Both trips will be £150, including two nights' bed, breakfast and evening meal. Not many places are left.

VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club.

The VSC and the Supporters Club are now involved the IAG in conjunction with the South Yorkshire Police, In a supporters-led initiative, to cut down on anti-social behaviour at games, how the policing of matches come about, trying to make it a more pleasurable experience going along to the games.

As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics.

The Rovers show on Trax FM has now moved to a Friday night spot from 6pm til 7pm, with me and Mellony Sheperd talking all things Rovers and local nonleague football, well worth a listen.

Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of.

Club Doncaster Foundation’s Football Welcomes team (DCC United) travelled to Burnley FC to play in a tournament for teams of people seeking asylum supported by professional football clubs. Rovers and the Foundation have been supporting DCC United by providing pitch space and coaching, while fans of Rovers and Belles fans have also been donating football boots but this was the first time the team had been invited to play against teams from similar projects. There were eight teams in total with Derby County, Everton and Burnley FC making up Rovers group, while a second Burnley team joined Liverpool, AFC Fylde, and Hull City in group B. Rovers finished in the top two qualifying for the semi-finals where they narrowly lost out 4-2 to AFC Fylde. The team had a great time at the tournament enjoying competitive matches and socialising off the field. Club Doncaster Foundation staff would like to thank Burnley FC for their hospitality on congratulate Liverpool FC on winning the competition.

DATE Club Doncaster Sports College Principal Adi Turnpenny believes the Community and Educational Football Alliance (CEFA) league is a great competition and a brilliant way to encourage young people into education. Formed in 2018, the CEFA league is a football competition organised by the EFL which allows college students who are enrolled on a sporting course affiliated with their Club Community Organisation to participate. The league runs alongside the education programme and students represent the club that is associated with the college. Rovers have three teams that compete in three of the twelve leagues ran by the EFL with fixtures being played every Wednesday afternoon. The teams represent Rovers on the pitch and they study a Level Three BTEC in sport at Club Doncaster Sports College during the rest of the week. Rovers excelled on the pitch throughout the 2018/19 season with one of their teams claiming the league title. “The CEFA competition supports the great initiatives that the clubs run, in our case here at Doncaster it’s an education programme and further education courses for 16-18 year-olds,” Turnpenny said. “It’s been excellent in supporting the educational courses we run, in offering students unique opportunities to experience alongside their studies. Obviously qualifications are the most important part of the education courses, but there’s nothing wrong with applying what you learn in the classroom out in a practical environment on a football pitch.” Club Doncaster Sports College student Wade Robson was a part of the team that won the league last season and he says he appreciates the unique chances that studying a BTEC with the Sports College gives him. “Studying at Club Doncaster means having an opportunity to play football. It’s a bit of a reward system - if you do well in the classroom, you get the chance to play in this league and represent Rovers,” he said. “My view is that it’s a real privilege. In the CEFA league we get to play on the best pitches, wear the club badge, it gives you a bit more experience and shows you what it’s like to be a professional. “The CEFA league is a real motivation in the classroom, because you know that if you let the college tutors down it will get back to your coach and you’ll be taken off the team - not because you’re not good enough, but because to play you have to be performing in the classroom.” Club Doncaster Sports College are holding open events on February 27,and March 26 at the Keepmoat Stadium so you can come along and see if studying with us is the best option for you.

CLUB DONCASTER AMBASSADORS

BACKGROUND

The Club Doncaster Ambassador programme was launched in August 2016. The role has changed over the past few years and has had varied degrees of success.

42

WHAT IS AN AMBASSADOR?

The scheme is about connecting with your local area. Your local area being where you live, where you socialise and maybe even place of work. An ambassador is a volunteer, approved by the club and tasked to simply distribute promotional materials from the club on a monthly basis. The ambition is to have at least one ambassador representing each recognised Doncaster and District village. We know our supporters base is vast so anywhere from Goole to Retford, Tickhill to Moorends, Thorne to Edlington.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? AND WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO? HOW DO I GET STARTED? Please express your interest by one of the following options:

Contacting the lead ambassador Lee Rourke via supporterservices@clubdoncaster.co.uk, the Club Doncaster Box Office or speaking the the club SLOs. You will then be given more information on the role and asked to sign a disclaimer protecting you and the club.

COMMUNICATION

We meet as a group once per quarter, which is attended by key operational stakeholders within Club Doncaster, including Commercial, Marketing and Ticketing. You also receive the opportunity to attend other forums on a case by case basis such as Fans Forums, Supporters Boards and Meet the Owners.

YOUR REWARD

A free home ticket to all Rovers league games during the season (subject to your ongoing commitment to the scheme and providing regular proof of distribution.
