A word from the manager

Darren Ferguson Good afternoon, and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium for the visit of Charlton Athletic. I would like to welcome Karl Robinson, as well as the supporters, players and staff of the Addicks. Karl and I have a healthy respect for each other, having had many battles over the years, and I am sure today will be a good game between two sides that want to play the right way. We put in a determined performance at Portsmouth last Saturday to make sure we came away with a point – coming away from Fratton Park with anything has to be seen as a good result – and give us something to build on today and for the remaining 15 games of the season. We had to move quickly to bring in Andy Boyle and Tom Anderson on loan as the transfer window closed. With three injuries at the back, we felt we needed to bring in some extra faces to shore things up and ensure we maintained the momentum that has built up over the festive period. Thank you to the board for allowing us to bring them both in.

All 72 EFL Clubs have signed up to a new Chairman’s Charter to help put an end to the dangerous use of pyrotechnics.

of mine at Wolves, and it was an honour to play alongside someone who was a real trailblazer as part of the first generation of black players. The touching tributes since his death show just how loved he was by team-mates, fans and family. We have dedicated today’s fixture to support the work of Kick It Out and encourage our supporters to report any discrimination they see or hear. For more than 20 years, Kick It Out has played a vital role in ensuring that everyone, regardless of background is welcome in football. Their message of equality is extremely important to us at Rovers, and this is why we’re supporting Kick It Out’s stance against hate and encouraging all supporters to download their free app to eradicate all forms of discrimination from football. Enjoy the game

(Maybe they’re daydreaming back at

you. Deep!)

Good afternoon, and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to welcome the owners, supporters, players and staff of Charlton Athletic. We were a bit more active in the January transfer market than we had planned, as we had to react to the remarkable run of injurieſ all in one position – with Andy Butler, Mathieu Baudry and Joe Wright suffering problems in consecutive games. Credit must go to head of recruitment Russ Wilcox for identifying the players, but also to the board for ensuring the resources were made available – this means we can go into the final 15 games of the season with real confidence. The players showed some determination to make sure we came away with something from last Saturday’s game at Portsmouth, and, with a bit more luck, could easily have claimed all three points. Today could see a real landmark, with James Coppinger set for his 500th EFL outing for the club if he features.

We are just a week away from the start of the competitive season for Doncaster RLFC, who host Coventry Bears here at the Keepmoat Stadium on Sunday February 18. We have been delighted with the increased take-up of season tickets for the Dons this season, with a particular rise in young fans after we made them available for free - all part of our plans to grow Club Doncaster sustainably and with long-term thinking. There is still time to get a season ticket, or just come down to next Sunday’s game to sample a matchday. We will have more stuff going on off the pitch than ever at Dons games, so it is well worth coming down to see how we are improving things and following the model which is working with Rovers you can book your place at tickets. clubdoncaster.co.uk. Enjoy the game.

The influence he continues to exert on the team is clear to see - with yet another goalscoring appearance in last weekend’s draw at Portsmouth. There is not much that has not already been said about the man – to spend 14 years at one club is remarkable, to perform at such a high standard throughout his time here is unique.

JAMES COPPINGER James Coppinger is just one game away from reaching yet another milestone, his next appearance – potentially this afternoon – for Doncaster Rovers will be his 500th EFL game for the club.

moment. To be at a club for 14 years and play 40 games a season is a sign that I’ve kept myself fit and healthy, I’ve worked hard on consistency and making sure I’m in the team.”

The accolades continue to fall Coppinger’s way after 14 years in South Yorkshire, and he has a reputation for performing well on momentus occasions.

Coppinger scored on his 499th EFL appearance for Rovers at Portsmouth last weekend, and says there is no real secret to success when asked the key to performing so well for so long.

“There was more pressure with the Morecambe game last season given where we were in the league, that was an extra special day and it’s right up there with the best in my career,” he says, reflecting on his 500th competitive outing for the club, which came last season.

“It’s a nice milestone to reach and a great achievement for myself, to play that many games for one club is a big thing”

“It’s a nice milestone to reach and a great achievement for myself, to play that many games for one club is a big thing and when it does happen I’ll enjoy that

8

“You’ve just got to do the basics right, I look after myself and take enough time out during the offseason to allow my body and mind to relax in the period before pre-season gets underway,” he says.

“Although five or six weeks sounds like a long time off, it soon comes around to the new season, so as a player you have to make sure you’re ready to get going. Milestones aren’t something you can dwell on too much, they’re more

COPPS’ TOP GOALS something to look back on once you stop playing, I feel there is plenty of time left in my career to achieve more accolades.” Now playing under a manager with a reputation for developing young players, it is Darren Ferguson’s ability to improve the more senior players in the Rovers squad which has impressed Coppinger the most over the past two years. “The manager and the rest of the coaching staff want to work with the group they’ve got and develop players into being better, at this football club we need people who are able to motivate,” he says. “He has shown the contacts he has in the game, the club have backed him as well and it’s important that there is an understanding that he’s going to get the right players in. “I’ve changed my position under the manager, I used to enjoy playing out wide because you’d be out of the game for so long but could influence it massively with one play. It’s a totally different game out there because you have to concentrate a lot when you haven’t got the ball, I’ve had to adapt to the players around me.” Part of his development under Ferguson has seen Coppinger feature in more of a central role in the Rovers midfield, which allows him to take games by the scruff of the neck and lead by example. “I’ve gone from playing with more experienced players in the Championship to now being one of the more senior

heads in the dressing room, so my game has changed,” he says. “This group of players could do really well with a couple more years of development, they all show the willingness to learn so it bodes well for them. “I think we deserve a lot better in terms of how we’ve played this season, certain things have happened in games and a lot of that can be down to a lack of experience, but that comes with playing more and learning how to get over the line.” In the temporary absence of club captain Andy Butler through injury, the No.26 is backing other members of the Rovers first-team squad to lead the team over the next few weeks.

season, with a healthy competition in the defensive positions once everybody is back fit. A busy close to the window saw Rovers secure the loan signing of Tom Anderson, as well as the contract extension of Andy Butler. Darren Ferguson also allowed forward Liam Mandeville to move to Colchester United on loan.

“Deadline Day is strange if you’re in for a move, I was 17 and got a move to Newcastle back in 1998 when I was in the youth team at Darlington,” adds Coppinger. “We went to St James’ Park and signed a three-year-deal with a top four Premier League team at the time which was a dream come true as a young player.

“Butts has helped me massively and is a big part of the group, I said when he signed his new deal that he is everything this club needs and he’s getting better with age,” says Coppinger.

“It’s an exciting time as a player because you know if you’re doing well and performing well then there is always a possibility that a club could come in for you at the last minute.

“His overall game continues to improve, you need players like that in your team and he does a lot of work both on and off the pitch. “It’s important that we realise that he’s not available at the moment, and other players have to step up and take responsibility in his absence.”

“When I went on loan to Nottingham Forest I was on the team bus down to Yeovil and got a call saying they were in for me, I had to get off at the services and drive up to the City Ground. Every circumstance is different and for me at that time I went to free wages up for the club, and I always knew I was coming back to Doncaster.

With the January transfer window closed, Rovers have to use what they’ve got between now and the end of the

“It’s always exciting to see what happens and, for us, we managed to get some good deals done this time round.”

NEWS Doncaster Rovers are looking for fans to join a series of fan forums with a focus of enhancing the supporter experience at the club. The In Rovers We Trust campaign, launched six years ago, laid the foundations for a series of initiatives which are still in operation today, examples of which include the removal of booking fees when using a credit or debit card for match tickets, the introduction of cash gates, the introduction of prepour and pre-order facilities on half time drinks and the adoption of smoking bubbles for those supporters who wish to use them. Defender Andy Boyle feels there are signs of a strong partnership between him and Tom Anderson - after the centre-backs helped Rovers to a point at Portsmouth just four days after meeting each other.

that I can play out from the back and I’m quite calm and composed on the ball too, and I’m looking forward to showing everyone what I can do in the coming weeks.”

The pair, signed on loan after injuries to Andy Butler, Mathieu Baudry and Joe Wright, were thrown straight into the starting line-up at Fratton Park.

Boyle, who signed on loan until the end of the season from Preston North End, played a full 90 minutes in the 2-2 draw at Fratton Park, and hopes he can be consistent with his future performances.

Boyle said: “I’d trained with the lads since Tuesday, it’s a great bunch and I’m looking forward to playing more games now. Me and Tom formed a decent partnership, and the more games we play together the more comfortable we will be. “Portsmouth was a difficult place to go and we’re happy to have got a point out of the game, it’s a decent result and we were frustrated not to win it at the end. “I like to defend, but I also like to think

12

“It was a whirlwind few days, but I’m now looking forward to getting more games under my belt and helping us push up the table,” he added. “The new manager came in and I haven’t played as much as I’d have liked, my time with Dundalk was such a high and then going on to make my debut for Ireland after that, so I hope my time here can go on to be successful too.”

Dialogue with supporters has continued to improve since In Rovers We Trust, the club continue to host Meet the Owners events twice per year and the introduction of a Supporters Board has helped oversee a number of further initiatives, such as the 22-24 landing zone on Silver Memberships. The club are now looking for fans who are interested in further enhancing the experience of supporting the club to come forward to discuss ideas around the following topic areas: ∙ The stadium experience (including atmosphere and fan parks )

Head of group marketing & communications Shaun Lockwood said: “The forums will provide fans the opportunity to bring forward new ideas and discuss our own thoughts on how we can improve different aspects of supporting Doncaster Rovers. “A lot of changes we’ve previously made from supporter feedback at the club we’ve been able to implement almost as soon as the idea was put forward. “The purpose of these forums will be to take a longer term view of what fans want to see, so we can generate ideas for wider consultation and consider the timescales and infrastructure implications in more detail.” Supporters Board member Gill Shepherd said: “Rovers have listened and acted to a number of issues raised by us over the past few years, and I am proud to be a supporter of a club that takes feedback seriously. “This is a great opportunity for the wider fanbase to join in this process and help shape the way Rovers operates for years to come.” Those interested should email supporterservices@clubdoncaster. co.uk.

May was a constant thorn in the side of the Millers defence but could not find a way past goalkeeper Laurence Bilboe, but Schofield was impressed with the way the forward created chances in the game.

May was in inspired form and thought he had opened the scoring with a delightful chip over the keeper, however his attempt was chalked off for offside.

“Their goalkeeper has had a fantastic game and you have to praise him for that, Alfie is a very good footballer and he was keeping him at bay, especially in the firsthalf,” he said. “I like Alfie, he is a forward that is not scared to get into the box and create chances for himself and his team-mates, and I couldn’t fault his performance. The Millers took the lead after 32 minutes when a cross from the left-hand side by Reece McGinley was powerfully headed home by forward Joshua Kayode inside the box. Rovers levelled the game up when a short corner between Will Longbottom and Amos saw the latter take aim and guide a left-footed effort into a bottom corner of the net.

The keeper is currently on a season-long loan deal with the Addicks, signing in the summer from Bolton Wanderers.

A defender with vast experience, having played in more than 450 professional games.

Starting out with Manchester United, Amos went on six loans away from Old Trafford, notably with Oldham Athletic, Hull City and Carlisle United. He made seven appearances for the Red Devils, with only one of those coming in the league. His final loan move saw him moce to Bolton, and the switch was made permanent in 2015, before temporary moves to Cardiff and then Charlton. Amos is also a keeper with international experience, having played for England’s youth teams from under-16 through to under-21.

Pearce started out with Portsmouth, but his time at Fratton Park was short-lived and he made the trip along the south coast to AFC Bournemouth in 2007, helping the Cherries to promotion from League Two in 2009. He returned to Pompey in 2011, being named captain in his final season with the club. He moved to Leeds United in 2012, spending three years at Elland Road, being named captain at his third different club. He signed a three-year deal with the Addicks in August 2016, following a season-and-a-half with Wigan Athletic, and he has gone on to be a commanding figure in the back line at The Valley.

MIDFIELD MAESTRO

DEADLY STRIKER

Llinked up with his former manager, Karl Robinson, in August, signing a two-year deal at The Valley.

The forward earned his break in the Football League with Cardiff City, initially as a goalkeeper for the Welsh side.

He started out with Southampton, making three Premier League appearances at St Mary’s, as well as spending time out on loan with Dagenham & Redbridge and Southend United.

He was the back-up keeper for Cardiff’s League Cup tie with Liverpool in 2007, reverting to a position he had played in during his younger days, before returning to his favoured attacking role.

He left for Milton Keynes in 2013, and in his second season he was a key figure in their side as he helped them to automatic promotion from League One.

He moved into Scottish football with Aberdeen in 2010, where for a brief spell he found himself playing at right-back. He finally settled into a forward position at Kilmarnock in 2014, and that earned him a move to Charlton in 2016 – scoring 10 goals in his debut season at The Valley. Magennis is also famous for scoring the goal that sent Northern Ireland to Euro 2016 – against Greece in 2015.

Reeves is also a Northern Ireland international, making his international debut in 2014 against Greece.

John HENDERSON

Started his career at Tottenham, but failed to make a single appearance for Spurs in his four years at White Heart Lane. Instead, his time was spent out on loan at 13 various clubs – including Rovers in 2012 – where he made eight appearances over two months. Later in the same year, Button left Spurs to move to Charlton Athletic for £500,000. At the Addicks he was back-up to then first team keeper Ben Hamer and had to wait until January 2013 to make his debut – after five first-team appearances across his season at The Valley, he moved to Brentford in 2013 before joining Fulham in 2016.

The combative midfielder’s season at Belle Vue proved something of a breakthrough campaign - his 14 goals in 54 competitive appearances earning him a move to Crystal Palace. From there he moved on to Watford, Oldham and Barnsley – helping them to promotion to the Premier League. His 10 goals in 199798 could not keep the Tykes up, but he remained in the top flight with a £1million move to Charlton. His one season with the Addicks brought three goals in 33 outings before a move back north to Bradford. After a few management roles, most notably at Leeds United and Rotherham, he is now a regular at the Keepmoat Stadium as manager of Doncaster Rovers Belles.

The inside right began his career at Charlton in 1962 – making four appearances, scoring just the once. After a season at Exeter saw him reach double figures he moved to Belle Vue, but hit no goals in 10 outings before moving on to Chesterfield then Kidderminster – the latter being where he really found his groove, helping himself to more than 140 goals over a seven-year spell.

DEFENDERS Cedric EVINA

The Londoner spent his youth career at Arsenal after first signing on to their books when he was nine-years-old. Although he had some success at youth level, he moved to Oldham Athletic on loan in October 2010. He made the move permanent in the January transfer window. That summer brought an opportunity to move back to his hometown of London as he signed for Charlton. He made 35 appearances over an injuryhit three years, before re-uniting with his former Oldham boss Paul Dickov, who by this point was in charge at the Keepmoat Stadium. He has made 94 appearances for Rovers, with 21 outings in last season’s promotion-winning side. He joined Crawley Town this summer on a seasonlong loan - he has featured 27 times for Harry Kewell’s side.

20

Jason EUELL The forward (pictured) came through at Wimbledon, hitting 47 competitive goals for the Dons prior to his club record £4.75million move to Charlton in the summer of 2001. He spent five seasons at The Valley, scoring 37 times. After leaving Charlton he had spells at Middlesborough, Southampton and Blackpool, and it was from the latter that he moved on loan to the Keepmoat Stadium. He made 12 appearances for Rovers, scoring three times, in the latter stages of the 2010-11 campaign. He returned to Charlton for the 2011-12 season, scoring twice. He returned to where it all started with a loan move to AFC Wimbledon before calling a time on his playing career in the summer of 2012.

MY WEEK: HEAD OF STADIUM & OPERATIONS Marie Hepburn oversees the operations team at Club Doncaster Sports Village

and the Cantley Park training ground – covering every matchday and event

MONDAY I’m usually in from 8am, to have a senior executive officers meeting which takes place fortnightly. This looks at strategic developments within Club Doncaster and any key issues across the group. We follow that up later that day with a communications meeting, where managers of each department come together. This is to ensure everyone is aware of the wider projects and plans, which they can then feed back to their staff. If we had a game over the weekend – and there is usually one of Rovers, the Dons or Belles at home – there are often things we need to pick up in the afternoon.

MATCHDAY 8am: This is probably the busiest bit of my matchday. We go through the stadium to carry out the safety checks and ensure everything is working ok.

TUESDAY No two days are ever the same, so as head of operations I oversee the training ground as well as Club Doncaster Sports Village and matchday operations. A lot of my work at the moment is on events which will take place from the summer through until 2019, this includes the Steps and A-ha concerts this June. We are also looking at what events we can bring to the site in the future, and I recently joined Dons chief executive Carl Hall in a meeting about bringing some of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup to the Keepmoat Stadium.

3pm: I’ve probably got one of the best views in the stadium, but I don’t get to see much of the match. It can be quite busy in the control room, with representatives from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, South Yorkshire Police and our CCTV operators as well as staff.

WEDNESDAY This is another day for scheduling meetings, which can be something like our safety advisory group or with our catering providers Centerplate.

22

11am: If there is a Supporters Board meeting these take place before home games. We also have meetings with a group representing deaf and hard of hearing fans. 1.30pm: The turnstiles open. From this point I’m largely in the control room following what is happening across the stadium footprint.

3.45pm: From the CCTV we can monitor the queues at the food kiosks, and provide real-time feedback to Centerplate. THURSDAY If we have a home game then we get senior matchday staff together for a prematch meeting. Each department runs through what is happening with them, so everybody is clued up on what will happen. We include Sheila, one of our SLOs, in this meeting so we can get supporter feedback from the last game.

FRIDAY Most people at the club try to keep this day clear to catch up on paperwork and finalise preparations if we are at home the following day, but also to ensure we can chat more informally on anything we need. As an operations team we go through the stadium with a fine toothcomb to make sure it is ready.

4.50pm: This is one of the most critical points of the day as thousands of fans are leaving at the same time. We monitor via CCTV and keep in touch with stewards. 6.30pm: Hometime depends on the day and if there were any incidents which need dealing with, but usually we’re locking up about now.

On Tuesday, people across the UK and globally celebrated and supported Safer Internet Day and we pledged our support along with hundreds of schools and organisations across the UK. The awareness campaign encourages us all to ‘Create, Connect and Share Respect’ to help make the internet a better place. Co-ordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, the day provided an ideal opportunity to talk about the responsible, respectful, critical and creative use of technology, and to remember that “a better internet starts with you”. Within our Academy Programme our head of education, Tony Morton, delivers workshops providing all our young players with advice and guidance on the safe use of the internet and specifically social media. In addition our youth team players receive further advice and guidance from our own media team and from League

Football Education. On behalf of all the Academy staff and players I would like to congratulate James Coppinger on his 500th league appearance for the club. This is an incredible achievement and is testament to the way Copps has dedicated himself to his profession. He is an outstanding example to all our young players of how to apply yourself daily and his willingness and ability to continue learning is continuously evident. Copps is an excellent role model who provides excellent advice and guidance to our young players. He fully deserves all the accolades he gets for this tremendous achievement.

Paul Stancliffe felt there were plenty of lessons learnt during his side’s 1-0 defeat against York City last Saturday. He said: “There was a lot that was pleasing but we got beat so that’s got to hurt them, they’ve got to know that. The players have got to realise it’s not just about them coming out and looking good, playing good, they’ve got to get a result at the end of the day. Based on the performance, that probably wasn’t a fair result – not with the amount of possession and chances we had. “I know it’s a bit of a cliché, but you make your own luck. Yes, we’ve had chances and they need to look at themselves because they haven’t taken them, but there were some really good performances in there. Young Charlie Bell, who is an U15, got a couple of minutes at the end if they are good enough then we’ll keep using them.” Rovers head to Oldham Athletic this morning.

TEN YEARS AGO: DONCASTER ROVERS IN SEASON 2007-08. Part 16 The treatment room at the Keepmoat Stadium was a busy place in March 2008. Stephen Roberts was the latest casualty, having picked up a foot injury in the 1-0 win at Bristol Rovers. He was joined by fellow centre-back Gordon Greer, recovering from hip surgery, while James Hayter and James O’Connor were coming back after hernia operations. J.J. Price was being treated for damaged ankle ligaments sustained at Tranmere while Lewis Guy was still absent with glandular fever. It was a tribute to the strength of Rovers’ squad that they retained second place in League One and were well placed for promotion with twelve games remaining. On Saturday March 8 2008 Rovers played their first home game for a month, facing struggling Port Vale. Matt Mills started at centre-back with Paul Green moving to right-back and Mark Wilson in midfield. Mark McCammon and Paul Heffernan formed the striking partnership. After 11 minutes it was the latter who put Rovers ahead, latching onto a weak defensive header following James Coppinger’s cross to shoot home via the crossbar. After 19 minutes Heffernan played in Coppinger whose shot was blocked and McCammon scrambled the ball into the net at the second attempt. Rovers

26

were dominant and it seemed only a matter of time before they increased their two-goal lead.

O’Driscoll kept the same team that had beaten Port Vale and was rewarded with a fourth minute goal.

It was Port Vale who scored next, though, after 34 minutes and against the run of play, when Paul Harsley’s low cross was not cleared properly and Whitaker scored from close range.

A neat pass from Richie Wellens found Coppinger who took it on and slotted low past Royce.

Despite this setback Rovers looked dangerous and McCammon headed Green’s cross against the bar on the stroke of half time. Just after the break the busy McCammon had a goal ruled out for offside and then on the hour Mills’ header forced a brilliant save from Anyon. Rovers ran out 2-1 winners in a game they should have won more comfortably and indeed they were almost denied when late on Herd’s shot from range hit a post and bounced to safety. The win meant that Rovers were on 65 points after 35 games, eight points behind leaders Swansea City and a point ahead of third placed Carlisle United. There was then a gap of seven points to Nottingham Forest in fourth, while Walsall and Southend United occupied the other play-off places. There was a quick turnaround for Rovers with Gillingham visiting the Keepmoat the following Tuesday. Manager Sean

Rovers suffered a blow on 21 minutes when Wilson was forced off with an ankle injury but his replacement, Sean McDaid, was soon in action, forcing a fine save from Royce. From the resulting corner, Brian Stock’s shot rattled a post. Just before half-time Wellens had an effort blocked on the line by a defender, but it was by no means one-way traffic and Gillingham had their chances too. Rovers extended their lead three minutes into the second half, Belgrave handling as he contested a high ball in the area with McCammon and Heffernan sent Royce the wrong way from the penalty. After 56 minutes Rovers were pegged back when Neil Sullivan failed to hold a corner and Crofts scored from close range. But, with five minutes left the goalkeeper redeemed himself with a fine save from a fierce shot by Nutter. Rovers ran out 2-1 winners of an evenly contested game and were now only seven points behind Swansea with 10 matches remaining. John Coyle

The latest from the

Communications team Andy Butler was the most recent member of the first-team playing squad to join us on iFollow Rovers to provide expert insight during a match – acting as cocommentator during last week’s game at Portsmouth. Butts followed in the footsteps of John Marquis, Alfie May and Andy Williams in joining us for cocommentary duties this season – something we have tried to do to enhance the service this season. Williams has been the most regular, joining us for all home games. For just £4.49 a month, fans can listen to exclusive audio commentary for every game, as well as view full recordings of every pre and post-match press conference and watch back every game in full from the following day. If you are a regular visitor to our website you may have already noticed an increased number of stories on there.

We have looked at our content strategy, and feel there is scope for us to add more unique content. The most obvious difference supporters will see over the coming months is that frequency of unique editorial content will increase – the stories are not designed to sell you something, just to make sure you are as up to date as possible on Rovers. We launched our new website in the summer, and in truth we did not have a great deal of time to add the finesse we wanted. This summer we will go through revising it, with the belief that we will go into 2018/19 with a communications output which compares favourably to the best in the division. Rovers til I die

Viking Supporters Co-Operative Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. Recently the Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust.

discuss a very broad range of topics. It is early days for this new Board, but so far the signs are very encouraging in that nothing has been held back and the trust between club and supporters is evident. As the meetings progress we hope to be able to announce the progress that has been made. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the new requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. IRWT Martin O’Hara

The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the Football League and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. The EFL issued a new league rule informing clubs of the minimum requirement for meeting with supporters and the kind of topics that should be included. That new rule came into force for the 2016/17 season. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have initiated a Supporters Board which meets on a monthly basis during the season to

CLUB DONCASTER FOUNDATION

Business leaders and their guests attending the Doncaster Chamber Business Awards 2017 raised £4,890 for Club Doncaster Foundation. Local firms donated products, tickets and experiences for the raffle which was held on the night alongside a silent auction. “Club Doncaster Foundation were absolutely delighted to have been chosen as the nominated charity at the 2017 Doncaster Business Awards, said Club Doncaster Foundation executive director Jim Lord. “The money raised during the evening will benefit our programmes that address mental health and social isolation in Doncaster. “It will also significantly contribute towards activities and opportunities for

the most vulnerable and hard to reach children and young people across the borough. On behalf of everyone involved in our programmes and all the team at Club Doncaster Foundation – thank you!” Prizes included vouchers for family and corporate hospitality events and experiences donated by Doncaster Chamber member businesses including the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, DCLT, Doncaster Racecourse, Doncaster Sheffield Airport and hotels. Amy Symon, membership & business services executive, Doncaster Chamber, added: “The Doncaster Chamber Business Awards night was a true celebration of local business at its best. This amazing amount raised for Club Doncaster Foundation is a true example of how Doncaster businesses are working together to support each other and Doncaster’s local economy.”

Sunnyfields Primary School lived their EFL Kids Cup dream at the last home game as they beat Owston 2-0 at the Keepmoat Stadium.

professionalism from both Sunnyfields and Owston on the day and I know everyone who came to watch were thoroughly entertained with the final.

The two schools had progressed to the final of Club Doncaster Foundation’s event last week and the decider was played out on the Keepmoat Stadium turf before Doncaster Rovers’ clash with Bristol Rovers.

“Playing on the pitch was a dream come true for many of them and now it’s even better that Sunnyfields get to pull on the Rovers strip and actually represent them at the League 1 North Finals.

Sunnyfields now get the chance to represent Rovers in the next round of the cup, which sees teams from across the country compete in the EFL Kids Cup League 1 North Finals.

“Both teams should be very proud of their efforts and how far they have come.”

Schools co-ordinator Kelly Jackson said: “We were so impressed with the

CLUB DONCASTER Richard Horne believes basic errors prevented the Dons from beating Championship side Batley Bulldogs in the pre-season friendly at the Club Doncaster Sports Village, but felt there were plenty of positives. The Dons were beaten 36-34 in the final game before the Betfred League One season gets underway, and the head coach saw room for improvement.

DONCASTER ROVERS BELLES when you do that a Championship team will punish you.” Horne’s side scored three late tries to reduce the deficit against the Bulldogs, and he says that is a good omen for the 2018 campaign.

He said: “I thought the opening 20 minutes was really good from our point of view, we gave a good account of ourselves but couldn’t quite build any momentum.

He added: “I haven’t got any issues with our fitness, the lads have trained really hard and i think that was obvious from the way we finished the game with some nice tries. We’ve finished both friendlies with some momentum so I know if we’re chasing games in the league then we’re always going to be a threat.

“Against a team like Batley you can’t afford to be making those mistakes too often. We would get a penalty and then lose the ball, when we got any field position we’d come up with an error, and

“I’ve got what I wanted to out of the two games, I think in phases we’ve looked really good and scored some good tries, it’s all about making sure we value the ball more in possession.”

Two Kirsty Hanson goals sandwiched between strikes from Jess Sigsworth and Rebecca Rayner gave the Belles a 4-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion in Neil Redfearn’s first game as boss that saw them remain top of the table and unbeaten. Kirsty Hanson scored twice to give the Belles their fifth successive league win after Fern Whelan’s header cancelled out Jess Sigsworth’s penalty. Head coach Redfearn was forced into an early change after Sophie Barker twisted an ankle in an attempt to clear the ball after just 10 minutes, with Rachel Newborough coming on to replace her. The Belles faithful loudly claimed the ball crossed the line 20 minutes in after Sophie Walton’s corner flew past everyone and struck the far post, bouncing across the face of goal before Brighton were able to clear it – but the referee remained unmoved and waved away the protests.

with her second attempt at a tackle. Fern Whelan levelled things up in injury time, heading home from captain Sophie Perry’s free-kick from the right. But, after sustaining two first-half injuries, there was plenty of added time for the Belles to restore their lead before the break, with Hanson finishing Simpkins’ cross from deep with an excellent effort. Sigsworth went close to adding a third for Doncaster off Rayner’s beautiful chipped pass on 66 minutes, but Perry got across and made a superbly-timed sliding tackle to block the striker’s shot. Another chance came and went for Sigsworth six minutes later, but this time it was the post that got in the way of her fiercely-struck shot after Hanson’s cross went uncleared.

Belles hit the upright twice more within five seconds in the 78th minute: first, Simpkins’ cross bounced off the top of the crossbar, and Brighton’s The Belles lost another player seven clearance rebounded back towards minutes later as Rhiannon Roberts picked goal off the onrushing Maz Pacheco and up a knock, with Rayner coming on to take clattered a post. up a number 10 role behind Sigsworth as Newborough filled Roberts’ right back Belles seized on the ball from the slot and Emily Simpkins moving to the resulting goal kick and launched a right wing. move that culminated in Hanson lashing a 20-yarder into the net off the Sigsworth fired the home side ahead bottom of the bar. Rayner rounded out from the spot on 33 minutes after a clear the game with a similar effort in the penalty award, with Rayner skipping final minute of normal time, beating delightfully past Beth Roe to get into the Lucy Gillett with an unstoppable longbox before the full-back felled Rayner range shot.
