Darren Ferguson Good afternoon, and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I would like to welcome Uwe Rosler, as well as the supporters, staff and staff of Fleetwood who have made the trip. We had a close game at Highbury earlier in the season, and as we are around each other in the table we know today is an important game. We want to put on a performance after Tuesday’s match. We were not good enough at Walsall, and want to show the real Doncaster Rovers today. That performance was not befitting a Rovers team and is not what I expect from my players. We have set a standard over the past 20 months and we fell well below them on Tuesday.

He is most famous within football as the “Hero of Munich” when in February 1958, as a Manchester United player, he pulled players such as Bobby Charlton from the wreckage of the plane that had crashed at Munich-Riem Airport. He went on to make more than 200 appearances for the Red Devils, but it was at Belle Vue where he first made his mark in English football. In his interview he talks fondly about his time in South Yorkshire and how he felt like a film star after signing with Rovers. Please give the other former Rovers players a warm reception today when they are introduced to the crowd.

We have also put a lot of thought into the Dons matchday experience, trying to replicate some of the successes we have with Rovers - especially with the family area, and Donny’s Kennel. We will have more going on than ever at Dons’ games, and it is well worth popping down on a Sunday afternoon to experience for yourself. Enjoy the game.

“On the day of the game I used to go down Fairfax Road to get down to the ground in the morning, I used to take a shortcut and come out by a beautiful school and go across the schoolyard and down North Road.” Gregg became a wanted man very quickly with numerous clubs fighting for his signature, but the goalkeeper could not turn down the chance to sign for Manchester United to become a Busby Babe – after watching them months before at Old Trafford with Rovers teammate Bill Patterson.

“When we got to the hospital we had to sit there and wait for the specialist to come and look at me. He asked them how they reduced the swelling and I remember him saying that they could have destroyed my life.” As season ns passed, Gregg would strike up a tight bond between himself and two players that have cemented themselves in the Rovers history books: Jeffrey and Williams. Williams was already at the club when Gregg signed for Rovers but the defender spent majority of the early years in the reserve side, while Jeffrey took the Second Division by storm after making his first-team debut at the age of 15. “When Charlie was playing he would go and head a ball out for a throw in and would get back into position and I would be shouting at him to watch the centre forward, and he would turn round to me and say ‘don’t you worry about it me old flower’,” says Gregg.

“Don’t let anyone tell you different, I have played with players like George Best and so on but Alick Jeffrey was a terrific kid, he was in the starting line-up at the age of 15, and he was also a brilliant singer. “Him and Charlie Williams were two of the most important people in my life, and I think that things could have turned out differently for Alick, who was supposed to join Manchester United, but broke a leg before the move happened.” Throughout the 1955/56 season, Hardwick and Gregg would continue their battle to claim the Rovers No.1 shirt, with the

latter winning the battle in late January, keeping the shirt until he left the club two seasons later. During that season Rovers defeated one of the biggest sides in England in Liverpool at Belle Vue, a game that sticks firmly in the memory of the former Northern Ireland international. “We beat them 1-0, people forget they were in the Second Division in those days, they travelled really well too,” he says. “Belle Vue had one of the most beautiful pitches that you would ever have seen at

The men were Matt Busby and Jimmy Murphy and the boss told them I was ready to sign,” he adds. “And at that point Matt turned to me and said do you want to join Manchester United? That was the young Busby Babes at that time and I was quick to say yes, I have said over the years that if I was born a rich man that I would have paid that record transfer fee just to join United. “I once travelled on the train with Bill Patterson to Manchester to watch United, I remember the two of us, Rovers players, standing in the Stretford End watching this team, and never did I think I would be playing for them years later.”

NEWS James Coppinger is ready to push on as the season heads towards its final stages after clocking up his 500th EFL appearance for Rovers.

Rovers, and now as captain, he believes that the current crop of players is one that is capable of achieving big things in the near future.

Captain Coppinger reached that landmark against Charlton Athletic last Saturday, and 37-year-old Coppinger feels fitter than ever.

“We have shown that we have been in every game, the lack of experience has maybe shown at times, but understanding each other means that this can be eradicated and if we can finish the season strongly we can look ahead to next year,” he added.

“I’m still enjoying my football, still fit, still healthy and still contributing to the side, maybe my shift from the wing to the centre of the pitch has helped me but I’m still running as much as anyone else,” he said.

Forward Alex Kiwomya has thanked Rovers for their support during his early season illness that could have ended his career. Kiwomya suffered from Guillain-Barré syndrome in pre-season which kept him out of the Rovers side for six months, and the former Chelsea man is targeting more minutes on his return to first-team action. “It’s about playing now for me, I am glad to be back fit and it has been a long road to get back to this point, it was difficult for me in the early stages not knowing if I would actually come back,” he said. “The guys here have been amazing, from the players to the staff, the physio has helped me massively over the past few months, working one-on-one with me and

that progressed me a lot quicker. When I was in hospital all the lads texted me to see if I was keeping okay, so that was really supportive to know that they were behind me.” The striker made his return to professional football in the 2-2 draw against Portsmouth at Fratton Park in Sky Bet League One, and Kiwomya says that it was a special moment. “I am so happy to be back out on the pitch playing football, I thought I would have forgotten how to play I was away for so long, but to make my debut was something special,” he added. “I took a picture of the shirt in the dressing room as I didn’t ever expect to see it hanging up there.”

“When you look at the stats, in the Scunthorpe game I ran more than anyone else playing through the middle and that shows I’m still working hard and doing all the things I was doing when I was younger, so nothing has changed. I wake up every morning feeling fresh and with the desire to help improve this team and be successful and long may it continue.” Coppinger is now in his 14th season

Former Rovers player John George (Jackie) Teasdale passed away on Monday February 5 aged 88. Born on March 15 1929 in Rossington, Jackie was spotted playing for Rossington Colliery (now Rossington Main FC) and signed for Rovers in October 1949. Brian Makepeace, who like Jackie worked at Rossington Colliery as well as playing for the football team, signed for Rovers around the same time and became a regular team-mate of Jackieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s during the 1950s. Jackie (pictured in the white shirt above), who was a strong-tackling half-back, made his Rovers debut on April 7 1951 in a 4-1 win over Chesterfield at Saltergate. I was not really until the 1953-54 season that he became a regular when he made 32 League appearances in a half-back line that also included Tommy Brown and Bill Paterson. His best season came in 1955-56 when he played in all but three League games and helped Rovers reach

the fifth round of the FA Cup. His halfback partners were Morgan Hunt, Charlie Williams and sometimes Bobby Herbert. His form in 1955-56 earned him selection for an 18-match FA tour to South Africa. The tour party included a mixture of established internationals, such as Bill McGarry and Syd Owen, and some promising younger players such as Bobby Robson and Gerry Hitchens. But in the first game of the tour against Southern Transvaal when Jackie sustained a serious knee injury. A number of operations were unable to resolve the injury and he was forced to retire from professional football in August 1957 at the age of only 28. He was awarded an insurance payment of ÂŁ4,000, scant consolation for the curtailment of a promising career.

The former Ireland youth international Bolger signed from Southend United in 2016. Bolger made his debut in English football for Bristol Rovers, while on loan from Leicester City, going on to make 52 appearances across three loan spells for the Gas.

He started out with Preston, but it was not until his move to Shrewsbury in 2009 where he started to find himself playing regular football. Neal made 74 appearances for the Shrews, helping them to promotion from League Two in 2012. The following season saw him move to Port Vale, where he played every league game and earned his second promotion from League Two. His final year with Vale saw him spend time on loan with Bury and Rovers, making two appearances between the sticks at the Keepmoat Stadium.

He signed for Bolton in 2013, but failed to make an appearance, instead spending time on loan with Colchester United and Southend United, the latter of which was turned into a permanent move in 2014. He scored the winning penalty in the Shrimpers’ 7-6 penalty-shootout win in the League Two play-offs at Wembley in 2015, spending a further season in Essex before making his move to the Fylde coast.

The Irishman signed for the Cod Army in January, after four-and-a-half seasons with Scunthorpe.

Coming through the ranks at Carlisle United, Demspey was named as the Cumbrians’ player of the year in just his second season as a professional footballer. His performances in League Two were rewarded when then Championship side Huddersfield Town came calling in 2015, where he made 21 appearances in the second tier. Dempsey joined Fleetwood, initially on loan, in 2016, where he played a key role in their run to last season’s play-off semi-final, where they lost out to Bradford City over two legs.

PADDY MADDEN

Madden signed for Carlisle in 2011, after spending the first part of his career in his native Ireland, but it was a loan spell with Yeovil that kick-started his career in England. Nine goals in 15 league games earned Madden a permanent move to Somerset and he followed that up with a further seven goals as he helped the Glovers to reach the Championship, scoring in the League One play-off final at Wembley in 2013. He earned a call-up to the full Irish side, making one appearance, adding to his caps at various youth levels for his country. Madden arrived at Glanford Park half way through the following season, going on to score 60 goals in 195 games before making the move to Highbury last month.

Started his career with Preston North End before loan spells with Tamworth and Morecambe eventually led to a permanent switch to Shrewsbury Town in 2009. The keeper stayed with the club for four seasons before joining Port Vale. His spell at Vale Park proved to be the most successful of his career in terms of the number of games played, turning out more than 120 times in a four-year spell. The 32-year-old then enjoyed brief loan spells with Doncaster Rovers and Bury in 2016, before a permanent switch to Fleetwood Town where he is now into his third season.

Joined Kidderminster Harriers, who were his first professional club, at the age of 21. He spent one year there and played almost 50 games before signing for York City in 2011. Blair impressed at Bootham Crescent and made nearly 100 appearances for the club. The winger signed for Fleetwood Town in 2013 and helped guide the Cod Army to Sky Bet League One, beating Burton Albion in the play-off final at Wembley. Blair then moved onto Mansfield Town and spent one season at Field Mill, helping the Stags to establish themselves in the EFL once again. He joined Doncaster Rovers in the summer of 2016 and had a solid first season with the club, performing at both the right of midfield and right-back, as Rovers gained promotion back to Sky Bet League One at the first attempt.

DEFENDER Danny ANDREW Started his career with Peterborough United, signing his first professional contract in 2008. He went out on loan several times in order to build his experience in the lower leagues, spending time with Tamworth, Kidderminster Harries and Cheltenham Town. It was his spell with the latter which was turned permanent in 2010. The left-back played more than 50 times for the Robins before falling out of favour at Whaddon Road, eventually signing for non-league Gloucester City. He spent just one season there before a move to Macclesfield Town in 2013 when his career kick-started. Andrew played in every game in the National League that season before a move to Fleetwood Town came about. A serious knee injury hampered his stay at Highbury though, and he left the club after just two seasons. He again had to fight his way back to full fitness and got himself a new club in Sky Bet League Two side

STRIKERS Alex KIWOMYA

Grimsby Town. The 27-year-old swept up at the club’s player of the year awards last season which attracted the attention of Doncaster Rovers and Andrew’s former manager Darren Ferguson, who snapped him up on a two-year-deal at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Born in Sheffield, Kiwomya signed for Chelsea from the Rotherham United Academy in 2010. Following his move to Stamford Bridge, he went on to represent England all the way up to U19 level, where he played alongside Premier League star Dele Alli. His professional career began with a loan spell at Barnsley in 2015. The season after he joined Fleetwood on loan, before

joining Crewe Alexandra which was the most successful of all his spells away from the capital. He played 34 games for the Alex, scoring seven goals and helping to consolidate them in Sky Bet League Two. He signing for Rovers this summer, signing a three-year-deal.

Jon PARKIN Started his career with Barnsley after coming through the youth system at Oakwell, but it was with York City where he made his name. He spent two seasons at Bootham Crescent and scored 13 goals in 69 appearances, before moving on to Macclesfield. His spell with the Silkmen proved even more fruitful, as he averaged a goal almost every other game with 30 in 65 appearances for the club, before a move to Hull City. He went on to perform in the Championship for Stoke City and Preston North End, before joining Rovers on loan in 2011. He played a handful of times during his stay at the Keepmoat Stadium, without scoring a goal for the club. Loan spells with Huddersfield and Scunthorpe followed, before a t move to Fleetwood. He helped the Cod Army consolidate in the EFL after promotion into the league – with 17 goals in 53 appearances.

MONDAY We have a team meeting at 9:30am which includes the whole communications departmen, to discuss the priorities for the week ahead. If there is a Tuesday night game we will have a press conference with Darren Ferguson and a selected player in attendance with BBC Radio Sheffield and the Free Press among others. One of us will film while the other tweets out quotes from the interviews via the club’s official twitter account. Once that is completed, we will again split roles with one of us writing up stories for the website, and the other editing and uploading the videos to iFollow Rovers. Robbie often goes to Dons training on Monday evening to get content for their website or programme. TUESDAY If we have a home or away game in midweek, we will start at midday and spend the afternoon preparing for the game, that includes ensuring our camera battery is fully charged. If the game is away, we will set off at a time which suits the distance we have to travel. Sometimes even if the first team are not playing, there will be a development game at Cantley Park which one of us will cover while the other remains in the office and finishes any other work which needs finishing off. WEDNESDAY Once we have finished any post-match tasks that need doing, today is a chance to catch up on other tasks - writing

a certain distance, we will travel down on the Friday and stay over in a hotel close to the ground we are visiting. MATCHDAY 11am: We arrive to the stadium in plenty of time to allow us to set up ahead of the game at 3pm. 12noon: Ryan will set up the big screen while Robbie finishes off his preparation for leading the commentary on iFollow Rovers. 1.45pm: Luke collects the teamsheets, we will print them off and put the team out on social media at 2pm. 2.45pm: Robbie will begin live iFollow Rovers commentary alongside a player who is not involved in the matchday squad, while Ryan will prepare to tweet out live updates of the game. features for the Rovers or Dons websites or programmes. It is also a chance to have our one-to-ones with our manager, Luke, who likes to check how we are feeling both with work and our day-to-day lives. THURSDAY Robbie will go down to Cantley Park to interview players for either a programme piece or the website looking ahead to the weekend’s game. The preview will provide an extra angle to our press conference. Once Robbie has returned to the office, we

will head round to the West Stand to set up for press. FRIDAY Ryan will spend the morning scheduling up social media up until 3pm on Saturday, which includes the graphics with a quote from a player and the manager. If Rovers are away on the Saturday, we will pack our matchday gear away and leave the camera battery on charge, as well as picking up the remaining tickets once they have been taken off sale. If the game is above

4.45pm: The manager and a player will come up to the press room for the post match interviews to take place, which we film for iFollow Rovers. SUNDAY Depending on which one of us is on “Sunday duties”, we will have to write-up and upload the interviews to the website, as well as scheduling social media for the next couple of days. We also have a Dons game most Sundays, Robbie acts as Dons media manager and works in partnership with the marketing manager Mark.

The Academy programme is split into three phases. The Foundation Phase covers the under 9s through to the under 12s and is overseen by Tom Sutton. Each age group has two coaches with coach developers, goalkeeping coaches, sports scientists, medical staff and analysts, education and operations providing valuable support to the coaches, players and parents. It’s great watching the young players in these age groups – their enthusiasm and real enjoyment is always evident in both training and games. They can certainly cheer you up on a cold evening or Sunday morning and there is some real ability in these groups - Tom and his team of coaches create an excellent environment for the players to develop as players and young people. The Youth Development phase, led by Tony Mee, covers the under 13s – under 16s. The structure of the coaches and support staff remains consistent through this phase with an added emphasis of specific psychological development added

to the programme. We have a really good balance of coaches that includes current and ex-players. The ability in these groups is evident and Tony, along with the coaches, work extremely hard to create the appropriate environment that will give the young players the best chance of progressing through thus phase and onto a youth team contract with the club. The Professional Development Phase covers the Under 18s and the extended development group that includes first and second year professionals. The commitment of the club to the development of the younger players is superb and the coaching and guidance provided by John Schofield, Paul Stancliffe and Paul Driver and a dedicated team of support staff adds great value to this. Supporters have seen at first hand the development of a number of these players into the first team this season and this structure and support will be vital in increasing the levels of productivity.

Central defender Shane Blaney pulled on a Rovers shirt for the first time in the Development game against Rotherham United reserves. Blaney who signed from League of Ireland side Finns Harp in January played 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw and says he is looking forward to playing more games for the club. “It’s a brilliant feeling to play for Rovers, I’ve been looking forward to my first game, thankfully I’ve got my chance to show what I can give to the team and I cannot wait to play more games,” he said. “It’s a big change for me especially on the training side of things, it’s going from two or three sessions in the evening back in Ireland and now it’s everyday of the week.”

Rovers dominated the first half, Stock’s shot striking the crossbar and Paul Heffernan heading over when well placed. The game changed on 57 minutes when Brighton, who had offered little threat,

Two more of Rovers’ charity shirts have been made available for auction, with all profits going to the Campaign Against Living Miserably. Rovers wore a one-off kit to raise awareness of charity partners Campaign Against Living Miserably for the game against Northampton Town on Boxing Day, with all profits from the auctioning of the shirts going to the charity. This is the only time Rovers have worn this kit, so it is a truly unique part of the club’s and football’s history. Communications team SOCIAL MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS The supporter-led collection for Doncaster Foodbanks which takes place at every home game is a great initiative which everyone connected with the club can be very proud of. Launched before Christmas when Scunthorpe visited, the organisers were hoping to reach a total of 500kg in food or £500 in cash donations at last Saturday’s home game. It would have been a fitting target as we marked James Coppinger’s 500th EFL appearance for the club. Although deadlines mean this column had to be printed prior to an update, the amount of items donated when I stopped by the collection point should mean we are close to that aim. I was dropping off two big bags of items donated by Club Doncaster staff. We had a collection before Christmas to buy presents for the annual festive trip to Doncaster Royal Infirmary, and had a bit of money left over. We put this to good use by buying items from the Foodbank’s list of suggested items, which we hope will help keep the momentum going. Jim Duffy and Martin O’Hara are at the collection point outside the Belle Vue Bar before all home games, and with all donations going to help local people in need it is a really good cause. Hopefully by the time you read this we may have had an update, which we will have listed on the Rovers website. Last week I had a special guest alongside me in the press box, with Zeke Bolton and

his dad Thom. Zeke is a young Rovers fan who has suffered from leukemia, but gets to as many games as he can. As a treat we decided to give him a behind-the-scenes treat, so he joined me from 2.15pm on a matchday to help film the videos of the players in their warmup which we use on social media, before ensuring he high-fived all the players as they came off. During the match he helped with selecting images for the website and social media, then after the game got to speak to all the players as they were leaving – the collection of selfies can be seen on the opposite page. Our programme interview today is a bit different. Normally we focus on a member of the current first-team squad, but today we feature Harry Gregg – who went on to become a Busby Babe and survivor of the Munich Air Disaster, but speaks so fondly of his time at Rovers when he was team-mates with Alick Jeffrey and Charlie Williams. We sent a member of the media team to Northern Ireland to speak to him as he was unable to get over today to be inducted into the club’s hall of fame. It is one of my favourite programme interviews of recent years. SUPPORTERS A good afternoon and a warm welcome to the fans, players and management of Fleetwood Town for today’s EFL encounter, We got a creditable draw at Highbury back in November, our supporters were well looked after by the Fleetwood SLO Adam, who made us most welcome, and I hope we can repay them with the same hospitality today. We have had a long and tiring trip down to Portsmouth Saturday before last, backed by nearly 400 fans, with neither team having won in 2018, you could have predicted a draw, but it was a really enjoyable game with Copps continuing his remarkable record of scoring in every season since 2006 for us, and long may it continue.

While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters.

The Supporters Club weekend away will be for the last game of the season, away at Oldham on April 27-29. We are looking at stopping at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Southport from Friday til the Sunday, cost will be about £125 per person, bed, breakfast and evening meal.

He adds so much to the team and what a landmark last week with his 500th league game for the club, you don’t find loyalty from players like that nowadays. We salute you, James.

The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the Football League and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. The EFL issued a new league rule informing clubs of the minimum requirement for meeting with supporters and the kind of topics that should be included. That new rule came into force for the 2016/17 season. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. CLUB DONCASTER FOUNDATION The Fit Rovers team at Club Doncaster Foundation have been using their Saturday mornings to provide a cycle group for participants wanting to better their health.

Course six of Fit Rovers have reached their half way milestone last week and have some fantastic results to show for it. Combined, the group have lost an impressive 6st 7lb, while 54cm has been shed from their waist circumference. The weight loss has contributed to an overall weight loss of 69 stone 4 pound, over five and a half programmes of men. Participant Paul Reynoldson said: “It has completely surpassed my expectations, it’s a great group of lads and the content is fantastic. “I set myself some targets for the end of the course, and I have already hit them at just week four, I’m over the moon and every week I just can’t wait for next the session.” The guys now have four more weeks of tailored exercise sessions and

workshops designed to improve their mental and physical wellness. At the end of their Fit Rovers journey, the group can choose to enter the follow on Fit Rovers Veteran classes, paying just £2 a session for full access to the Keepmoat Stadium and all the equipment. Paul added: “I’ll definitely be attending the Vets sessions after the eight weeks, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. “I can’t believe the eight weeks are free but then it is just £2 to continue! “That’s nothing, what is it – a burger? CLUB DONCASTER Kieran Cross says the Dons are feeling confident ahead of tomorrow’s Betfred League One opener against Coventry Bears.

“The first couple of years here were a learning curve, now i’ve got to grips with the speed of this level of rugby I think this year is the next step for me,” he added.

“You can tell straight away with the experience we’ve brought in that some of the lads have been involved at a higher level and have been in the game a long time.

“There are only a few Doncaster lads in the team now so we’re close to the fans, we want them to know how much we care and that we’re giving it everything. I think this year could be great for us, I’d recommend all fans to come down and support us as they could make the difference.”
