David Cotterill’s consolation in a 2-1 home defeat was as good as it got for Rovers, with a 3-0 reverse in Lancashire.
Bolton may have felt that double was payback for the brace Rovers claimed in 1986/87 in their previous league meetings, with a 3-0 success at Belle Vue followed by a 1-0 win at Burden Park.
