Tonight’s clash is the first meeting in six years between Rovers and Bolton, with Wanderers completing a league double in the 2012/13 season. David Cotterill’s consolation in a 2-1 home defeat was as good as it got for Rovers, with a 3-0 reverse in Lancashire. Bolton may have felt that double was payback for the brace Rovers claimed in 1986/87 in their previous league meetings, with a 3-0 success at Belle Vue followed by a 1-0 win at Burden Park. John Cornforth (2) and Glen Humphries were scorers in South Yorkshire that day, with Neil Redfearn netting in Lancashire against a club he would later go on to represent.
