A word from the manager

Darren Ferguson Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I would like to welcome Ryan Lowe, as well as the fans, players and staff of the visitors. We suffered two serious injuries to players at Rotherham last weekend. Tom Anderson fractured a cheekbone and had surgery in the week, he is likely to be out for four-to-six weeks. Alfie Beestin has suffered ankle ligament damage which we reckon could keep him out for six-to-eight weeks, it is a real blow for the lad as he has done really well this season since coming into the team.

Last Saturday was a tough one to take. It was a typical derby and I think we surprised them a little bit with the way we played - when we got behind them and pressed them we caused them problems. Our front three have been outstanding in the past couple of games, they’ve led the line in terms of pressing and have looked a real threat. I’d like to add my condolences to the families of Doncaster Knights player Ian Williams, who passed away after collapsing in training, and boxer Scott Westgarth who died after his fight at the Dome last weekend.

These are lengthy injuries, but in truth there is also a bit of relief they are not Enjoy the game. worse – with Tom we worried he may have fractured an eye socket, while with Alfie there is no break. The run of injuries we have had this season has been incredible, it is a testament to the squad of players that they have been able to cope and to the board that they allowed us to dip into the loan market when a couple of extra faces were required.

Thoughts of the chief executive

Gavin Baldwin Good afternoon, and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium for this afternoon’s visit of Bury. I’d like to welcome the owners, supporters, players and staff of the Shakers who have made the trip down the M62 to join us today.

week at Rotherham we were so close to ending the Millers’ unbeaten run. It was a close game between two sides who gave everything, we need to dust ourselves off and take out the frustration from the way that match finished on Bury today.

I would like to start by offering my condolences to the family of Ian Williams and Scott Westgarth, after a tragic few weeks in local sport.

Today sees us put on a special Women at the Game event, an initiative created by lifelong football fan Jacqui Forster.

Ian was a player for Doncaster Knights who died after collapsing during a training session, while Scott passed away last weekend after winning a boxing bout at the Dome on Saturday night. Everyone at Club Doncaster extends our best wishes to the families of both men, who were dedicated sportsmen trying to be the best they could be. May they rest in peace. On the pitch we feel we can look forward to the final 11 games of the season with some real optimism. Last Saturday’s match at Rotherham United was frustrating for everyone connected with Rovers, but with a week to put the game into some perspective there are a lot of positives to take from the performance and the 3-0 win over Fleetwood Town which preceded it.

She has had a productive career working for fans causes at the Supporters Direct cause, and in recent months has turned her attention to ensuring football can be as female-friendly as possible - citing examples of mothers who want to bring their kids, but have little or no experience attending games. I would like to welcome those women who are with us today as part of the offer, I hope you enjoy the day and wish to come back to some of our remaining home games. As a club we try to be as accessible as possible, with a special focus on families and our younger fans. Donny Dog’s Kennel is packed before matchdays, with fans and players mixing and taking part in all sorts of activities. Enjoy the game.

We dominated the game against Fleetwood on our way to three points, which was a perfect response from the players after the loss at Walsall. Then last

LUKE McCULLOUGH In almost five years as a Doncaster Rovers player, Luke McCullough has shown his quality whether selected as an organised centre-back or a dynamic holding midfielder. The Northern Ireland international has had to show how strong he is mentally over the past couple of seasons, after missing huge chunks of each campaign with serious knee and thigh injuries respectively. “Psychologically it’s tough because with the cruciate ligament injury I had, I knew straight away I was going to be out for a long time which was hard at first, but eventually I accepted it and just got on with things,” he says.

the manager gave me time off when I needed it. “This time I’ve had a few set-backs so I’d say it’s been harder to get back to full fitness, it’s difficult when you think you’re close to coming back and then you get knocked back a couple of weeks.

“It’s been nice to be back over the past few weeks, the more I’ve played the better I’ve felt and it hasn’t taken me long to get back up to a level which I am “It’s been nice to be back comfortable with.” over the past few weeks, the more I’ve played the His injury in the summer better I’ve felt – and meant his pre-season now i’m up to speed” didn’t start until late 2017, when he had to play catch up to get to the levels of the other players around him.

“When you’re injured you never switch off and it starts to affect your life even when you’re away from football, we’ve got good staff here though and

“My pre-season started with the physio just before Christmas, it was a slow process and one which was frustrating at times but it shows how much effort was

going in to make sure my body was right for coming back,” he says. “All that’s in your mind when you’re in the gym is getting back out on the pitch, to be honest the first game I played for the development side I didn’t feel great, but after that I started to get used to it again. “No footballer wants to be in the gym or just training all week with no end product, I always knew that if I kept working hard then my chance would eventually come.”

always had lots of company. Myself and Alex came back with the hope of giving the side a boost and I think we’ve done that, we’re both very different players but we add certain qualities and a freshness to the squad. “We came back as more went out so it’s like a revolving door with all the injuries, once we get everybody back fit the manager is going to have a really healthy squad to pick from at this level.”

McCullough’s versatility is one of the main reasons he is such a key asset to the squad when 100 per cent fit and, McCullough has had plenty of teamwith competition for places now strong mates in the gym at Cantley Park this in both the defensive and midfield areas, season, with Alex Kiwomya, Andy Williams he is happy to play anywhere deemed and Danny Andrew all suffering long-term neccessary. injuries at different stages during the 2017/18 campaign. “I’m happy to play anywhere for this club, we’ve got a lot of defenders here now and The 24-year-old believes having other I’ve played here before - wherever the players around him, as well as the hard manager needs me to do a job I will give work done by physiotherapist Joe Sharp it everything,” he says. during his recovery, has helped him to come back stronger than ever. “If I can get a run of games together I know I can make a difference, that is “We’ve got a new physio in this season when I’ll feel like I’m really back from and he’s been great with me and the injury, I’ve got longer this season to try other lads, they’ve all worked out plans and put my stamp on things. for me and checked how I was doing on a regular basis,” he says. “I’ve lost the ability to build momentum in my performances over the past few years “It makes it easier when there are other given the timing of my injuries so that’s players going through the same thing always in the back of my mind, the plan because you become closer to them now is to stay fit for as long as possible. during the work in the gym, it’s about helping each other through and we’ve “It’s been a couple of years now since I’ve had a lot of injuries this season so I’ve had a good clear pre-season and been

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS fit from the word go, so now my aim is to finish this season strongly to give me some momentum for when we report back in the summer.”

To continue the interview with the midfielder we asked him a few short fire questions about more quirky topics.

The former Manchester United Academy product made his first appearance of the season for Rovers against Portsmouth at Fratton Park on February 3, and says the fact that the squad stayed overnight ahead of the game made him feel like a part of the first team again.

He and Kiwomya came off the bench to help Rovers to a 2-2 draw at Fratton Park. “It was nice to be back with the lads and with it being a long away trip we stayed overnight so it felt like I was really part of the squad again, it was great to be back in,” he adds. “The reserve games helped me massively, although they aren’t full speed compared to the league games they allow you to get used to the physical battles and getting your timing right. “They are a big help because you can get minutes under your belt and test how well the injury has recovered, it gets you back ready for when the manager wants you back in the team. “We’ve had a bit of inconsistency this season, the luck hasn’t gone our way too often and that’s easy to say I suppose, but if we can turn that around in the last few games then we will finish strongly.”

Rovers manager Darren Ferguson is relieved Tom Anderson suffered only a broken cheekbone after colliding with goalkeeper Marko Marosi during last Saturday’s game at Rotherham United.

is. He has gone back to Burnley for the operation as they will get the operation through quicker and we will keep in contact with him throughout.”

The centre-back, on loan from Premier League side Burnley, will be out of action for four-to-six weeks and had surgery on Tuesday. Ferguson feared Anderson’s injuries could have been even worse.

Ferguson has also been dealt a blow with news midfielder Alfie Beestin will spend around eight-weeks on the sidelines as he recovers from ankle ligament damage suffered in the same game.

“It is a very serious injury and we thought that he might have fractured his eye socket as well, but thankfully he hasn’t, it is a bad injury but it could have been a lot worse,” he said.

“I’m really disappointed for Alfie because he has made himself a real fixture in this team, we have pulled him back to the midfield role and he has done really well there,” he added.

“When you see it back you can see that Marko has caught him quite badly, the striker has nudged him and obviously put him into Marko. He is a tough boy and he will get on with it, that’s just how he

“It is a real blow for the boy, I think a lot of people at first thought it might have been a break because it was a strong tackle, although it wasn’t a malicious tackle at all.”

After beating Prostate Cancer himself in 2016 Lawrence Knight will be representing Rovers in this year’s Prostate Cancer UK’s Football to Amsterdam event. Lawrence completed the 145-mile trip to Ajax’s Amsterdam ArenA for the first time in 2017 with Club Doncaster employees Andrew Whitham and Nicola Moran, and he is looking forward to representing the club once again. He said: “Two years ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and I had to have my prostate taken out, Prostate Cancer UK is very close to me as they helped me through a difficult part of my life,” Lawrence said.It was really nice to ride alongside Andrew and Nicola last year because you are representing the football

club, and it was an easy course without too many hills. “I want to continue to do the ride as often as I can, obviously depending on my health because it is something that I really enjoy doing and I want to give Prostate Cancer UK something back.” The 72-year-old is a keen cyclist and targeted completing the event in 2016, but he says it was too soon after having his prostate operation. He added: “I enjoy cycling and I wanted to take part in 2016 but it was a bit too soon after the operation, I finally got my chance to do it last year and it was brilliant,” he added. Volunteers from Prostate Cancer UK will be staging a bucket collection prior to today’s match.

Today sees Rovers host first Women at the Game initiative in association with Pennine Stone for our game against Bury in Sky Bet League One. Tickets to this event include match tickets, a stadium tour of the first-team dressing room, a sit down three course meal in our Legends Club restaurant with table service as well as a complimentary programme, glass of Champagne and half-time refreshments. Women at the Game has been created be Jacqui Forster, who has a history of working for supporter causes before taking a step back from that role after being diagnosed with cancer. It is intended to help women who may not be experienced in attending football feel comfortable going to matches. Jacqui said: “I simply want to enable more women to feel happy going to watch

sport, particularly men’s football.I think that meeting other women before the game in a non-threatening venue, like a café, entering the ground together and wherever possible spending the match with their new found friends. “Aimed at women of all ages, all backgrounds, ethnicity, ability and religious belief, I hope that Women at the Game can empower women to experience the fun of going to the game, match, tournament without fear of intimidation, feeling isolated, lonely or need of fellow women’s companionship. This is really about making friends with other women who support the same club. “Making friends is a basic instinct the world over. Groups of friends going to the game in a non-tribal way is, I hope, the beginning of a whole new adventure for many women.”

AWAY TEAM BURY

TOP STOPPER The former England youth keeper joined the Shakers this January, signing until the end of the season from Middlesbrough. Ripley is currently in his seventh temporary move away from the Riverside Stadium, and his second this season after spending the first half of the campaign with Championship side Burton Albion. The stopper spent a season on-loan with Scottish Premiership side Motherwell before spending last season with Oldham Athletic, with Ripley an everpresent for the Latics. He has earned international caps with England, making five appearances in total for the under-19 and under-20 sides.

12

CONNOR RIPLEY

MIDFIELD MAESTRO The tough-tackling midfielder was named captain after re-signing for the Shakers in the summer. Signing for Mansfield Town in 2005 after a youth career with Leicester City, Dawson went on to be a fan favourite with the Stags but after relegation to the Conference in 2008, he moved to Gigg Lane to link up with Bury for the first time. Dawson was appointed captain and won the club’s Player of the Year award in his second and final season of his first spell with the Shakers. He joined Leyton Orient in 2010, being named captain immediately, before spells with Barnsley and Rochdale followed. He joined Scunthorpe United in 2015, captaining the Iron, before joining Bury again and being awarded the captaincy for the fourth time in his career. He has also represented Ireland internationally at various youth levels.

18

STEPHEN DAWSON

DEFENSIVE ROCK The experienced defender is in his first season with Bury, after signing a two-year deal in May. Edwards started his career with Wigan Athletic, but it was with Accrington Stanley where he got his break, signing initially on-loan and helping them to promotion to League Two, before making the move permanent in 2006. He spent five years with Stanley, playing over 250 times for the club, before moving on to spells with Stevenage and Rochdale.

14

PHIL EDWARDS

In 2013, Edwards signed for Burton Albion, and he played an instrumental role in the Brewers backto-back promotions from League Two, reaching the Championship in 2016.

DEADLY STRIKER The towering striker is on loan from Sheffield United until the end of the season. After a prolific spell in non-league with Guiseley, Hanson signed for Bradford City in 2009, spending eight highly successful years with the Bantams.

32

JAMES HANSON

During his time with Bradford, he scored crucial goals in both league and cup. He scored in the 2013 League Cup semi-final against Aston Villa, sending the Bantams to the final at Wembley, before scoring against Northampton Town in City’s League Two play-off final success later on that year. He signed for Sheffield United in January 2017, helping the Blades to their League One title success last season, before arriving at Gigg Lane a year later, making a temporary switch to Lancashire.

19

JOINT FIVE-A-SIDE GOALKEEPER Ian LAWLOR Signed for Rovers on a permanent transfer from Premier League giants Manchester City in January 2017 after an injury to Marko Marosi. Has represented the Republic of Ireland at various age levels and is in for his first full season with Rovers. Prior to his move to the Keepmoat Stadium, Lawlor gained firstteam experience with loan moves to Barnet and Bury. The later saw him make 16 appearances for the Shakers after joining them on loan in January 2016, with two penalty saves in an FA Cup shootout with Bradford City among the highlights of his time with the club. He has now made 56 competitive appearances for Rovers.

DEFENDERS Ben FUTCHER The Oldham Athletic academy graduate joined Rovers in 2002 under Dave Penney from Stalybridge Celtic. Just six months later the defender moved onto Lincoln City. Eventually he settled down in Bury in 2007 where he helped the club to finish mid-table in his first season, scoring his first goal in a 2-1 win over Leeds United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. In 2012 he was joint-caretaker manager of the club with Peter Shirtliff, before hanging up his boots in 2013.

20

MIDFIELDERS Kyle BENNETT Signed a one-year deal with the Shakers in the summer of 2010 after a trial, having been released by Wolves. He made 35 appearances, scoring twice, as promotion from League Two was sealed - which earned him a move to the Keepmoat Stadium. He spent four years with Rovers - making more than 130 appearances and scoring 16 goals - before moving to Portsmouth then this summer joined Bristol Rovers.

Brian FLYNN The midfielder began his career at Burnley in 1972 then moved on to Leeds United in 1977. After returning to Burnley and a spell at Cardiff, he first moved to Belle Vue for the 1985-86 season. The following campaign was spent at Gigg Lane, before returning to Rovers for the 87-88 campaign. His management career took in

Wrexham, where he had finished his playing career, Swansea City and a twogame caretaker spell in charge of Wales. He had a memorable spell as Rovers manager after taking charge in January 2013 following Dean Saunders’ move to Wolves - guiding Rovers to the League One title after the incredible final-day drama at Brentford.

STRIKER Colin CRAMB The striker had spells at 19 clubs across a career which spanned from 1991 until 2015. Cramb joined Rovers from Hearts for ÂŁ25,000, with 28 goals across two seasons earning him a move to Bristol City in 1997. The Scotsman spent two loan spells at Gigg Lane: once in 2001 from Crewe Alexandra, then returned on from Fortuna Sittard in 2003.

MY WEEK: MARKETING MANAGER Making sure our matchdays are special for young fans, Mark Hughesman’s role involves far more than just selling tickets MONDAY The week usually starts with meetings, first with the communications team going through the week’s tasks then the wider Club Doncaster group. When we don’t have a midweek game we usually have our Rovers Roadshow visits to primary schools in the area. These are organised by our Foundation and involve players going into the schools to take part in classes. Every child in the school is given a letter inviting them to an upcoming game free of charge. TUESDAY We check with the Box Office to see if we have any first-time fans coming to Saturday’s game. This means we can surprise them on a matchday, with Donny Dog delivering a small gift.

FRIDAY We don’t normally have player visits on this day as all their focus is on the match, but in pre-season we took the whole squad down to the town centre to help out at the market. We are finalising our matchday preparations, including ensuring the matchday guide is online. MATCHDAY 10am: We put up any posters which need adding, such as those welcoming away fans. We want to stand out as a club where all fans feel welcome. 1pm: Donny Dog can usually be found outside the stadium, we invite our younger fans to have their photo taken with him and share it with us on twitter via the #DonnyDogSelfie hashtag - we give away a pair of tickets to our next game, with Donny picking the winner himself! We get other players who are not part of the matchday squad to come round to Donny’s Kennel in the family area. The players are out on the pitch warming up for the game, Donny does the same taking young fans pitchside to do some exercises similar to what is going on over on the pitch itself. 3pm: During the match we have Donny’s Kennel available as a quiet area for young fans in the Family Stand if they need to spend time away from the crowd. We have special family liaison stewards who know to point families there if needed.

3.45pm: We have a family-focused pre-order service for the Family Stand, where familes can purchase their halftime snacks in advance and have them hand-delivered by Donny. Order online at donnysdeli.co.uk. Once Donny has handed out the food, he’s often on the pitch to face penalties from young fans. He has even been known to join in with our dancers from Cre8ive Dance Academy with their routines when it is a special occasion! 4.45pm: Donny is around to wave off young fans in the family area. Words from the Academy manager

KIERAN SCARFF The Academy is currently getting prepared for a visit from an educational ombudsman. This visit is arranged by League Football Education and is designed to support the policies and procedures we have in place to monitor and support the academic and life-skills development of all our young players. Our head of education and welfare, Tony Morton, works tirelessly to monitor the academic progress of all our players. He has developed positive relationships with the schools our players attend and uses their academic reports to monitor their development: offering guidance where required in a way that is consistent and supportive of the schools they attend. We are big believers in engraining good habits, with attitude to learning and respect being vitally important in life full stop. Along with academic progress Tony focuses very much on attitude and attendance as key areas.

Tony, along with our Academy staff, ensures our programme provides a variety of life-skills development opportunities that provide chances for our players to develop the core values we expect from them. These core values are also ones that will provide them with opportunities throughout their education, careers and personal life. Football Academies are, in essence, a smaller scale school. We have a great opportunity to provide positive and lasting opportunities and experiences for so many youngsters and we will always work to ensure we provide and further develop these. Good luck to the gaffer, the staff and the players today.

U18s coach Paul Stancliffe was impressed with character of his side during their 0-0 draw with fifth-placed Notts County. The U18s boss named a particularly youthful side as he looks to blood U15 and U16 players with a look to the future. He said: “I’m happy with a lot of things other than drawing the game, because we want to win the game. The most important thing, though, is that we don’t lose. “It’s a young team again, but that’s not an excuse because I thought they produced some really good stuff. Louis Jones was very good, he’s shown a good attitude and he’s come in even though he’s a little bit older, but he’s worked hard through the week and has been rewarded with a game.”

TEN YEARS AGO: DONCASTER ROVERS IN SEASON 2007-08. Part 18 With Rovers’ resources stretched by injuries, manager Sean O’Driscoll recalled two on-loan players to bolster his squad. Martin Woods was recalled from a short spell at Yeovil Town while Graeme Lee, recovering after long-term injuries, came back from Hartlepool United. On Easter Monday, Rovers faced Oldham Athletic for the fifth time in 2007-08, hoping to bounce back after successive away defeats. James O’Connor was absent with a slight thigh strain, while Stuart Elliott was away with Northern Ireland and adding to Rovers’ roll of full internationals by appearing against Georgia. Stephen Roberts and Mark McCammon took their places. The game had a lively start with both sides clearing efforts off their respective lines. Adam Lockwood was forced to make a last-ditch clearance to thwart Oldham’s Constantine before Matt Mills saw his goal-bound header cleared in similar circumstances. The game settled down and it became clear that Rovers would not find Oldham easy to beat. They did finally take the lead after 37 minutes, Paul Heffernan latching onto McCammon’s headed pass to score. Just after the interval McCammon was just wide with a header from a James Coppinger cross and Rovers paid the penalty on 52 minutes when they failed to deal with a free-kick and Jarrett volleyed in the equalising goal.

26

Rovers pressed for a winner and Richie Wellens shot into the side netting before Rovers had a very strong claim for a penalty for handball waved aside. After 83 minutes substitute James Hayter lobbed the advancing goalkeeper O’Donnell then watched as the ball hit a post and was cleared. Then in the dying minutes Paul Green shot just wide. A frustrating afternoon ended with the scores 1-1 and news of a victory for Carlisle, now clear in second place, added to the disappointment. There was little

start to the game as they dominated the first half. On 15 minutes Price connected with Gareth Roberts’ cross only to see his header well saved by Smith. Ten minutes later Heffernan fired wide when wellplaced and soon after Smith did well to turn away Green’s fierce drive. There was no score at the break but no doubt who was in control of the game. The lively Green had a goal-bound shot blocked after 55 minutes and then in a rare Forest attack McGugan stabbed a cross from Tyson just wide. The breakthrough arrived after 74 minutes.

time to brood on the disappointment of taking one point from nine because on Friday March 28, third-placed Rovers were at home to fourth-placed Nottingham Forest. Forest were on a poor run themselves, having won only one of their past six. The game was a special night for Neil Sullivan, making his 400th League appearance. O’Connor replaced Stephen Roberts while fit-again J.J. Price took the place of McCammon. Those who had witnessed Rovers’ recent struggles were heartened by their lively

Rovers won a free-kick on the edge of the box, Gareth Roberts struck a low shot and the ball went under a jumping player in the wall and into the net via a post. Five minutes later Brian Stock almost made it 2-0, forcing a fine one-handed save from Smith. It ended 1-0, a scoreline that flattered Forest rather than dominant Rovers. Rovers’ fans spent a rare fallow Saturday following scores from elsewhere, although these did not improve the team’s position. At tea-time Swansea City remained top on 82, Carlisle United were second on 75 with Rovers, who had played a game more on 72. Southend United, in fourth, were seven points behind Rovers. It seemed like a two-horse race for second place. John Coyle

NEWS

Young Rovers fan Zeke Bolton was given a unique behind the scenes experience during a recent game. Zeke, who is undergoing treatment for leukaemia, joined Rovers’ media team during the visit of Charlton Athletic. Zee helped media manager Luke Thornhill ensure the day went smoothly, helping film pre-match videos and choose the pictures which went on social media. He also got to meet all the players, highfiving them all as they came off after the warm-up and then getting photos with them all after the match.

Luke said: “Zeke was brilliant and seemed to really enjoy his day, he was a big help and Donny Dog even found time to stop by to say hello during the second half. “The players loved getting to meet him, and everyone at the club wishes him well in his fight against leukaemia.” Zeke’s father Thom joined him for the day. He said: “This was a wonderful gesture from Rovers and created lifelong memories for Zeke. “It is another example of the club going above and beyond to make matches special for fans.”

NEWS

Atherton Godfrey Solicitors has pledged to break a target of £20,000 raised for charitable causes as it signed up to Club Doncaster’s Official Partnership scheme.

and we are able to do this in a range of ways, including key partnerships such as this one with Club Doncaster and other charitable activities.

The charitable-minded solicitors firm is one of the largest law firms in Doncaster, with around 120 dedicated legal and support staff. This year they hope their donations will surpass the £20,000 mark through their engagement in charitable activities.

“We like to be involved in high profile national fundraisers, but our heart really lies with small local charities that do so much in our community.”

Don Bird, partner at Atherton Godfrey says a real commitment to Doncaster communities is central to everything they do. He said: “We are proud that while our practice has expanded rapidly, we have been able to retain the character of a high street law firm offering friendly, straight forward legal advice. As a Doncaster business, we feel that it’s important to support the local community

38

Established in the town centre for almost 40 years, much of their business now comes by recommendation from previous clients, ranging from family generations to national construction and development companies. Whether it is buying your first home, starting or developing a business, dealing with a family problem or planning for the future, Atherton Godfrey have experts on hand with all the knowledge, skills and experience needed to be able to offer the seamless service that today’s busy lifestyle demands.

SOCIAL MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS

42

The latest from the

Communications team This has been a busy week for the communications team, as we have been finalising our submissions for the EFL Family Club of the year. One of the best things about working for this club is that we have the freedom to innovate, to rip up the rules to try and give fans - especially the younger generation - a unique experience. Earlier in this programme we highlight Zeke Bolton, a young fan who has leukaemia, who got to come behind the scenes at a recent game. There are loads of other examples, before Christmas Andy Butler surprised a young supporter with cancer by stopping by his house, while this season we have an example where a fan who posted suicidal thoughts on twitter credits, at least in part, tweets from the Rovers account with helping him stay alive. It is standard practice for players to stop for photos and sign autographs as they arrive and leave, or if they are required for post-match duties. Every match we take a player into the Belle Vue Bar for a pre-match interview, with several others going into Donny Dog’s Kennel to interact with young fans - playing FIFA18 against them, taking part in other activities or just posing for photos.

through the Supporters Board, the panels that have been set up to build on In Rowers We Trust, Meet The Owners or from the fans who contact us or stop staff members for a chat at games or our events. We are always evolving. This season we introduced family liaison stewards, who have differently coloured vests to help kids spot them easily. Our junior programme, Donny Kicks, is now edited by a Junior Rovers fan who gets to interview their favourite player and is given away free. Coaches for away fans now get to park for free at the Keepmoat Stadium, something we believe will see clubs offer parking for our coaches for free in return. We do not always shout about these changes, but they are always being considered as we aspire to be one of the most family-friendly clubs in the EFL. Club Doncaster media manager Luke Thornhill Today’s Sine FM track from a local band is Want You Madly by Rival Bones

This culture is one of the reasons why Rovers are one of only a handful of clubs to have achieved the EFL’s Family Excellence award every year since its inception more than a decade ago. We do everything we can to put supporters at the heart of all our thinking, and value the feedback we receive

43

SUPPORTERS Official Supporters Club A good afternoon and a warm welcome to the fans, players and management of Bury F.C for today’s EFL encounter, We hope the Shakers supporters have an enjoyable experience and, after today, have a successful run in to stop them dropping to League Two. We have had a couple of away games since my last notes, with great travelling support – more than 300 at Walsall and well over 2,500 at Rotherham. The next away game is at Southend, on Saturday March 10. Bus time are in the programme, but some games may change throughout the season, watch for any notifications. We have brought forward the Blackpool times forward by 30 minutes all around, this is due to the Bank Holiday. If you live in the Retford, Harworth, Rossington area, why not use the Supporters Club home bus, which runs every home match at a very competitive price. If you live on Bawtry Road you can also use this service at £1 return. It runs direct to the Keepmoat Stadium and back and there no need to book, just turn up. Please let us know if would like picking up on Bawtry Road - call 07961727769 for more information. Our North branch also run coaches to most away games from Carcroft, Adwick, and points along the A19, a good active branch, it makes it much easier to travel

44

if you live that way on –call 07780316923 for more information. We also run coaches for certain games from the Sprotborough area, and the travel club have pick ups in the Hatfield area. Please remember there is no alchohol is allowed on the coaches. The Supporters Club weekend away will be for the last game of the season, away at Oldham on April 27-29. We are looking at stopping at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Southport from Friday til the Sunday, cost will be about £125 per person, bed, breakfast and evening meal. The Branch Dinner dance this season will be Friday May 11 at the Mount Pleasant Hotel. Rovers til I die Paul Mayfield

DRFCFans4Foodbanks Rovers supporters have now donated more than 500kg of food to a fans-led foodbank collection after a record haul at the Charlton game. Organisers set an ambitious target of collecting 100kg prior to the visit of Charlton Athletic, meaning the overall raised would hit 500kg and match the landmark 500th EFL appearance of Rovers captain James Coppinger on the same day. And with a record number of donations prior to the game - the aim was just achieved. That included a significant donation from Club Doncaster staff after a collection from staff based at the Keepmoat Stadium. The DRFCFans4Foodbanks initiative launched just before Christmas with a foodbank collection point outside the Belle Vue Bar at every home game with volunteers there to accept donations. The foodbank collection will be in place again for the visit of Fleetwood Town on Saturday February 17.

Suggested items are: Cereal Soup Pasta Rice Pasta sauce Beans Tinned meat Tinned vegetables Tea/coffee Tinned fruit Biscuits Non-food items are also welcome, such as: Toiletries – deodorant, toilet paper, shower gel, shaving gel, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, tooth paste, hand wipes Household items – laundry liquid detergent, laundry powder, washing up liquid Feminine products – sanitary towels and tampons Baby supplies – nappies, baby wipes and baby food. (Please note, due to advice from UNICEF they cannot accept formula milk.)

Fans can also leave donations at the Club Doncaster Box Office or club shop on nonmatchdays.

CLUB DONCASTER FOUNDATION

Today marks Rovers’ annual National Citizen Service matchsay, an event dedicated to celebrating Club Doncaster Foundation’s NCS programme and all the voluntary work done in the borough. Rovers’ first-team players will wear NCS t-shirts for their warm up and meeting the programme graduates.

Doncaster Borough. We’re delighted to welcome NCS Trust chair Stephen Greene to experience NCS matchfay with us. It’s fantastic that we can celebrate everything we do and have so much support from Doncaster Rovers. “I’m excited for the coming months with NCS.

NCS graduates from Club Doncaster Foundation will be on hand throughout the day to increase the interest of younger fans and talk to them about their NCS experience a=s well as provide activities in Donny Dog’s kennel.

“This summer we’ll be creating pathways for young people to continue their volunteering after their NCS experience as well as linking with local businesses to support graduates into job or apprentice opportunities.”

Programme manager Jan Budtz said: “I’m so proud of my team and feel lucky to manage a programme that empowers thousands of young people.

More than 1.9 million hours of social action has taken place across the country, the equivalent to building 74 Olympic Stadiums or the Great Wall of China.

“The social action projects that we see each year are in particularly excellent and make such a difference to the

Fit Rovers participant and artist, Chris Kay has pulled together a fantastic A3 portrait of James Coppinger to celebrate his 500 game milestone for Doncaster Rovers. The original artwork was presented to the Rovers captain following his man of the match performance against Fleetwood Town, and commemorates a wonderful career at the Yorkshire club so far. Displaying his first and 500th league games for Doncaster Rovers, the drawing also includes Coppinger’s team photo for the current season.

Coppinger thanked Chris for the “amazing drawing”, telling the budding artist he had an “unbelievable talent”. A print of the drawing will be signed by Coppinger himself and up for grabs thanks to a competition from Club Doncaster Foundation. Keep an eye out on social media for the chance to win. For more information about Fit Rovers or any of the work Club Doncaster Foundation do, contact the team on 01302 764663.

CLUB DONCASTER Richard Horne praised his side’s ruthlessness after they scored more than 70 points in a game for the second week in a row. The Dons ran in 16 tries as they beat Myton Warriors 82-6 in the Challenge Cup third round at the Keepmoat Stadium last Saturdau. Horne said: “It was always going to be more about the performance than the actual result, if the performance is good then the result usually takes care of itself and that was the case. “We’ve got some strike on both edges, so it’s important that we take full advantage of that and try to hurt teams when we get the opportunities. “These type of games are always about the performance, scoring plenty of tries

and building confidence. We need to be better though because teams will hurt us for our sloppy starts.” Jason Tali produced a man of the match display against the Warriors, scoring four tries, and Horne was impressed with the Dons’ attack in all areas of the pitch. He added: “We haven’t really pin-pointed the left edge, but with the quality we’ve got out there we’ve got to use it as much as we can, we found some nice passes out wide and finished the moves off with some clinical tries. The Dons return to the Keepmoat Stadium on Sunday March 11 to take on Whitehaven, you can purchase tickets from the Box Office on 01302 762576 or at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
