LEVEL PLAYING FIELD WEEKS OF ACTION Celebrating ‘Our Matchday’

The EFL is supporting the 2018 Level Playing Field Weeks of Action. This annual initiative, now in its 13th year, aims to celebrate accessibility and inclusion for disabled sports fans across England and Wales. Disabled people constitute the largest minority group at around 15% of the population and this number is increasing year on year. Naturally, a large number of disabled people are football fans too and we are pleased to take this opportunity to thank them for their continued loyalty and dedication to their club and our competitions. This year the EFL and Level Playing Field are celebrating the matchday experience for disabled fans. We want to shine a light on the positives of attending a live matchday and promote a culture of accessibility and inclusiveness within sport. This season’s campaign will see Level Playing Field join together with sports clubs, fans and organisations across England and Wales to celebrate the #OurMatchday campaign to promote the positive experience had by disabled fans and the message of access and inclusion for all. Clubs across the EFL will be working with their Disabled Supporters’ Association to promote the work they are doing to improve the supporter experience so that football matches are a welcoming environment for everyone.

3rd to 18th March 2018

A word from the manager

Darren Ferguson Good evening and welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to welcome Simon Grayson, as well as the supporters, players, staff and owners of Bradford. We had two close games at their place earlier in the season, and I’m sure tonight will be another good game. We head into tonight’s game on the back of a good point in tough circumstances at Southend United last weekend. We had to battle on a tough pitch, but showed our desire to get something from a game. We’ve got a few players coming back into contention as we enter the final 10 games of the season. This is going to be particularly vital as we now have seven games in April.

and Southend. You can play a big part in helping us in these closing stages of the campaign as we look to finish strongly yo set ourselves up for next season. We are fully focused on finishing this season well, we have 10 games left and view every one as winnable. I’ll be sitting down with my staff soon to ensure we’re progressing well with planning for the next campaign. We have targets to strengthen and everyone is confident we have the foundations in place to be successful next season. Enjoy the game.

Your support in recent games has been brilliant, with great backing at Rotherham

Thoughts of the chief executive

Gavin Baldwin Good evening, and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to welcome the owners, supporters, players and staff of Bradford City who have travelled down the M62 today. Although we were unable to play our last home game against Bury, I would like to pay tribute to our staff who worked tirelessly in the build-up to the game in an attempt to get it on. We were beaten by the elements, but every attempt was made to ensure it was played. The postponement of that game means we face a busy April, with seven games for Rovers in the month. I know Darren and the coaching staff will have a schedule planned out so the players are all able to compete at their best in all their games. While we know we still have a job to do on the pitch this year, we have done a lot of planning behind the scenes to prepare for the next season. We launched details of our 2018/19 Season Memberships last week, and they are on sale from our Box Office from tomorrow. We’ve put a lot of thought into the offering for next season, building on the good take-up we saw this year. We feel the Season Memberships are much more than season tickets used to be, with all sorts of extra benefits - not least some great rewards for those who pay in full early.

- our stash to giveaway includes XBox consoles and virtual reality headsets. There is lots for us to build on next season, on and off the pitch. I know manager Darren Ferguson is confident we have a core of a squad which can challenge at the top end of the table. As always we will look to do our transfer business in good time over the summer, and every Season Membership purchased helps strengthen our hand on that front. So to commit to backing us throughout next season, stop by the Box Office, call 01302 762576 or go to tickets. clubdoncaster.co.uk. Your backing will be vital tonight and in all our remaining games as we look to finish the season on a high. Although we would all love to be competing higher up the table than we are, we feel we have competed well in the vast majority of games we have played this season. We have 30 points left to fight for this season and, as one collective, let’s ensure we get as many of them as we can. Enjoy the game.

The first 500 fans who buy Season Memberships will get an additional gift

ALEX KIWOMYA There was a lot of anticipation as Alex Kiwomya prepared to make his long awaited Rovers debut, almost eight months after signing for the club on a permanent deal from Premier League side Chelsea.

games and then started me when he felt I was ready. “He seems really happy with me and how things are going, he tells me when I’m playing well and knows how to get the best out of me. He watched my clips before I came here so he is aware of what I have to offer.

He has not disappointed so far, his blistering speed and ability to find the back of the net were not hampered by the life threatening illness, Guillain“I covered the most distance out of the Barre syndrome, which whole team against prevented him from Rotherham so that was making his Rovers bow pleasing to hear, I’d say “The manager seems earlier. I’m definitely match fit really happy with me g, he now and capable of playing tells me when I’m playing “It’s been good to be back, a full 90 minutes.” well and knows how to we have a really good get the best out of me.” team chemistry here and Kiwomya has played we have a certain way that alongside top-scorer the manager wants us to John Marquis in his three play, so now it’s about turning that into starts for the club so far, and feels their results,” he says. contrasting styles is what makes them such a potent threat at Sky Bet League “The manager worked really well with me One level. Marquis assisted Kiwomya’s when I first came back into contention, he first Rovers goal in the 3-0 win over brought me off the bench for a couple of Fleetwood in February, before the roles

9

were reversed for Marquis’ opener against Rotherham United a week later. “I’ve enjoyed playing with John so far, we’re still learning how each other play. He’s really good at holding the ball up and I like to run in-behind so it looks like the perfect combination as a front two,” he says. “We’ve got an assist for each other in the games we’ve played so far so the early signs are good, I’d say it’s about playing together as much as possible going into next season as well. “All the strikers here like to press and close down the defenders to try and cause problems, it’s always something we can take advantage of and get goals from. “Every defender hates playing against pace so if they switch off for a second then I can get in behind, I noticed against Rotherham that their defender was covering a lot more and predicting my movements which leaves gaps for other players.” Getting back to full fitness as early as he did was a suprise for the 21-year-old, after initially fearing he may never get to walk out onto the pitch again. His aims are simple: play as many games as possible between now and the end of the season. But he won’t be taking anything for granted along the way. “It’s about going into next season with some momentum for me now, there will

10 10

be no break for me over the summer. I will be keeping on top of my fitness because I don’t want to be suffering any injuries,” says Kiwomya. “My only aim while I was injured was to get back fit before the end of the season so to be where I am now is great, it’s been a blessing to be back so soon and starting off well. “It takes me a bit longer to recover now just because I didn’t sprint for so long, but I’m doing some work with the fitness coaches to work on the strength in my hamstrings so hopefully that will improve.” It was a big decision for Kiwomya to leave Chelsea permanently last summer after several loan spells elsewhere in the EFL, and he can see why many young players choose to stay in the comfort of a Premier League club. Being from Sheffield originally and having family in South Yorkshire made it a much easier choice to make for the former England U19 international “It’s a hard decision to leave Chelsea, but the gaffer called me in to the stadium Image courtesy of Pickles magazine. A further interview with Alex can be found in issue 14 of Pickles magazine – find out more at picklesmagazine.com

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS and sat me down, he showed me the way the team play and how I could fit in which made me want to be here,” he says. “The fact that he wanted to take me permanently and not on loan was a big factor for me because I knew I needed to be settled at this stage of my career.

To continue the interview with the forward we asked him a few short fire questions about more quirky topics

OR

“When you leave a big club you get more independence, you’re so looked after at the bigger clubs so for a lot of players you have to move to be able to stand on your own two feet. “It’s easier for me as I’m back home now and it doesn’t take long to get to work, the training ground is lovely and everyone is great at the club.”

OR

Kiwomya believes a couple of experienced additions to the squad in the summer could turn Rovers into genuine challengers in Sky Bet League One. “The club has got a lot of potential, I think this season was always going to be about getting used to the league and understanding the teams we are coming up against,” he adds. “We’ve done well, we’ve lost some games we feel we should have done better in so for next season our aim is to be more consistent and be able to pick up more positive results. If we get a couple of experienced additions through the door in the summer would be good for us, we need to have the ability to see games out and older players are good at that.”

Midfielder Matty Blair will be the face of Rovers’ EFL’s Day of Action to demonstrate the positive impact football can have in changing young people’s lives. EFL clubs across all three divisions will dedicate tomorrow to showcasing the innovative and ground breaking work they do for young people in tackling some of the biggest issues in society across education, health, community inclusion and participation. Managers and players from the EFL’s 72 clubs will be attending events including projects that target mental health, disability and obesity. Rovers have committed to a whole day of activity, including a special appearance

EFL chairman Ian Lenagan said: “Football continues to support its communities seven days a week, 365 days a year through our unique network of club community trusts. “There are few sporting organisations that can deliver the scale of innovative and ground breaking activity we do via our network of clubs across so many important areas, including inclusion, charitable causes, community engagement, education or health.”

After beating Prostate Cancer himself in 2016 Lawrence Knight will be representing Rovers in this year’s Prostate Cancer UK’s Football to Amsterdam event. Lawrence completed the 145-mile trip to Ajax’s Amsterdam ArenA for the first time in 2017 with Club Doncaster employees Andrew Whitham and Nicola Moran, and he is looking forward to representing the club once again. He said: “Two years ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and I had to have my prostate taken out, Prostate Cancer UK is very close to me as they helped me through a difficult part of my life,” Lawrence said.It was really nice to ride alongside Andrew and Nicola last year because you are representing the football

club, and it was an easy course without too many hills. “I want to continue to do the ride as often as I can, obviously depending on my health because it is something that I really enjoy doing and I want to give Prostate Cancer UK something back.” The 72-year-old is a keen cyclist and targeted completing the event in 2016, but he says it was too soon after having his prostate operation. He added: “I enjoy cycling and I wanted to take part in 2016 but it was a bit too soon after the operation, I finally got my chance to do it last year and it was brilliant,” he added. Volunteers from Prostate Cancer UK will be staging a bucket collection prior to the visit of Bury later in the season.

MY WEEK: CLUB SECRETARY Head of football operations Mary Lally and Academy secretary Shelley Tonge oversee everything from signing players to training ground staff MONDAY It is an early start for Mary, with a meeting of senior executive officers at 8am followed by a wider meeting with department managers across Club Doncaster. Priorities f recently have been ensuring FBT get our kit orders so we get them back ahead of pre-season, travel for upcoming games as well as planning for the new financial year. TUESDAY As head of football operations, Mary’s remit includes catering, laundry and cleaning at the training ground in Cantley Park. Mary is based at the Keepmoat Stadium but regularly heads down to the training ground, while Shelley is based at Cantley Park for the first part of the week and at the ground later in the week. We are the first point of contact for the players if they have any queries - this could be about their contract, tickets or even just car parking for family at a game. We submit a teamsheet from the weekend game to the EFL as well as our referee’s report, and keep tab of things such as the number of bookings. Shelley mirrors this admin work if there are any development games, as well as youth team games. WEDNESDAY Two weeks at the club are never the same and it is definitely not a nine to five job. Inbetween meetings there are all sorts of queries that could come in, and we have to take into account the Belles and Dons

22

and their plans. Even in the summer when there are not matches, there is plenty to do with all the paperwork for new signings and any contract extensions. We are coming up to a really busy time with retained lists, with Mary looking after the first-team and Shelley overseeing all the age groups from U9 upwards. THURSDAY Shelley provides an update from the football side to our pre-match meeting. We make preparations for the boardroom on matchdays, getting details of who is coming from the visiting team and ensuring we order enough food. FRIDAY This is all about preparation for Saturday, we let the manager know how many scouts are coming. Any requests for a matchday tend to come in on this day. MATCHDAY 11am: A first task is to ensure the manager’s office is open and ready for a matchday. 1pm: Shelley is in charge of the West Stand reception. She hands out press passes to any visiting members of the media, while we have George who greets the officials and ensures they have everything we need. We have a dedicated security team, led by Malcolm Meek, who are based around the reception and tunnel area to ensure the safety of all the players and officials as they come in.

Some of the guys have been doing this job as long as the stadium has been here and do it without any need for us to interfere. Nothing is too much trouble for them, whether it is looking after an injured player or walking out with the officials to their cars afterwards. 2pm: The captains and assistants exchange teamsheets with the match officials at 1.45pm and give copies to our media team. Mary checks the teamsheets to ensure all is well, and take some of the first printouts from the media guys over to the boardroom. 2.30pm: Mary is back over in the West Stand for any queries from the officials, players or coaching staff before kick-off. 3pm: Kick-off comes and we breath a sigh of relief as it’s now over to the players. Mary walks round to the East Stand to watch from the gantry with other club staff, keeping a note of substitutions and bookings for the report to the EFL. 4.45pm: Mary is back into the players tunnel for when everyone is coming off the pitch. Again, the staff who are in that area all know what to do without any need for much guidance, but Mary is around to deal with any queries. 5.30pm: After speaking to his players then the press, the manager invites his opposite number into his office after the game for something to eat and drink over a chat. Things are calming down now, with the match over, and we can leave the ground.

Words from the Academy manager

KIERAN SCARFF The Academy was recently visited by an educational ombudsman. This visit is arranged by League Football Education and is designed to support the policies and procedures we have in place to monitor and support the academic and life-skills development of all our young players. Our head of education and welfare, Tony Morton, works tirelessly to monitor the academic progress of all our players. He has developed positive relationships with the schools our players attend and uses their academic reports to monitor their development: offering guidance where required in a way that is consistent and supportive of the schools they attend. We are big believers in engraining good habits, with attitude to learning and respect being vitally important in life full stop. Along with academic progress Tony focuses very much on attitude and attendance as key areas.

Tony, along with our Academy staff, ensures our programme provides a variety of life-skills development opportunities that provide chances for our players to develop the core values we expect from them. These core values are also ones that will provide them with opportunities throughout their education, careers and personal life. Football Academies are, in essence, a smaller scale school. We have a great opportunity to provide positive and lasting opportunities and experiences for so many youngsters and we will always work to ensure we provide and further develop these. Good luck to the gaffer, the staff and the players today.

Professional development coach John Schofield praised the way Rovers’ Development side dominated the game in his side’s 1-0 win over Walsall on Tuesday. A 12th-minute strike from Issam Ben Khemis was enough to give the visitors the win, and Schofield was impressed with his side’s high intensity pressing game. “It was something I said to the lads in changing rooms before we came out, how I wanted to get on their first touch and put them under pressure,” he said. “We played at a real intensity, with good tempo and good aggression, we always looked to go forward when we could and that is pleasing. That is something that we concentrate on as a club, is to keep hold of the ball and make sure we go forward with a purpose.”

TEN YEARS AGO: DONCASTER ROVERS IN SEASON 2007-08. Part 19 The rearranged home game against Leeds United took place on Tuesday 1st April 2008 and another big crowd turned up at the Keepmoat Stadium. Indeed, the official attendance of 15,001 was a record crowd for the venue. Rovers were unchanged from the side that had beaten Nottingham Forest the previous Friday and started well, James Coppinger shooting just wide and Richie Wellens having his shot blocked by goalkeeper Ankergren. Against the run of play, the visitors took the lead after 20 minutes. Douglas was fouled on the edge of the area and Sheehan curled the fre- kick around the wall and past Neil Sullivan. After half an hour Adam Lockwood was forced off with a foot injury, Stephen Roberts replacing him. Rovers continued to press and J.J. Price saw a header cleared off the line. Leeds led 1-0 at the interval and early in the second half Rovers went close again, Gareth Roberts hitting the post with a free kick. Rovers had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down when Stephen Roberts was tackled in the area and substitutes James Hayter and Lewis Guy both went close in the closing stages but it was to be a night of frustration for Rovers.

Huddersfield Town. Town had endured a poor season and had parted company with boss Andy Ritchie, youth team manager Gerry Murphy taking temporary charge of team affairs.

The only consolation was that Carlisle United lost the chance to open a gap over Rovers by losing at home to Nottingham Forest. The following Saturday Rovers faced another Yorkshire rival in

Rovers showed only one change, Stephen Roberts replacing the injured Lockwood, but they fell behind after seven minutes. A long throw-in was only partially cleared and fell to Williams who shot home from

26

in Rovers colours. Matters turned for the worse on the hour, though. Matt Mills pulled back Brandon on the edge of the area and was sent off and from the free kick Holdsworth shot through a poorlyformed wall and into a bottom corner. It could have been 3-1 soon after, Sullivan producing a good save from Booth’s header. With six minutes left the ten men of Rovers were level again. Coppinger’s pass found Green who scored with a low angled drive. The game ended 2-2, a contest Rovers would have hoped to have won, although in the circumstances snatching a draw seemed a good result.

the edge of the area. Rovers’ performance prompted manager Sean O’Driscoll into a double change after only 40 minutes, Mark McCammon and Gareth Taylor replacing Price and Paul Heffernan. The changes had the desired effect and after 52 minutes Rovers were level. James O’Connor fed Paul Green and he raced to the by-line before pulling back the ball for Taylor to score his first goal

Results elsewhere were not altogether kind for Rovers. Carlisle atoned for their midweek defeat by beating Yeovil Town 2-1 and there were wins for in-form Nottingham Forest and Leeds United as well as for Southend United. Tranmere Rovers’ defeat at Walsall seemed to have all but ended their play-off hopes. Swansea continued to lead the League One table on 82 points, with Carlisle after 78 and Rovers five behind on 73. Forest were on 69 points, Southend on 68 and Leeds were on 64 with an appeal against their 15 point deduction still pending. Significantly all Rovers rivals had a game in hand over Rovers who had only four games remaining. There was still much to play for after a rather disappointing week for O’Driscoll’s men. John Coyle

NEWS

Insurance specialists IFS Risk Solutions have put pen to paper on an agreement to be one of the main sponsors of the Doncaster RLFC first team shirt for the 2018 season. As the Doncaster based firm celebrated moving into new premises at the Apex Business Centre just off the M18, they have also agreed to join Club Doncaster as an Official Partner. Co-founder Paul Bloor has been a firm supporter of Doncaster Rugby League for many years and said he and business partners Mark Elton and Chad Needham were looking forward to extending that support to the whole of Club Doncaster. He said: “Over recent years I have had a very good relationship with Doncaster RLFC and been a firm supporter on the commercial side. Since setting up IFS Risk Solutions we have been very keen to get our name out there throughout

38

Doncaster and beyond and the opportunity provided by Club Doncaster seemed the perfect way to do that. “Our success to date is due to the personal service the team offers and the understanding of the requirements of local business in the South Yorkshire region. We have forged very strong links with corporate supporters of the Dons, and through the Official Partnership we hope to do the same with fans of Rovers as well.” Established in 2016, IFS Risk Solutions’ dedicated management team operates with a strict philosophy of remaining independent and places in excess of £3.5m of premium income through placement facilities with specialisms in property, fleet, construction, manufacturing and wholesale as well as risk management and claims expertise.

The latest from the

Communications team You may watch and read a lot about Matty Blair this week. Matty gave up a lot of time last week to do interviews about his community work to help promote the EFL Trust’s Day of Action. Tomorrow’s event will showcase the innovative and ground breaking work EFL clubs do for young people in tackling some of the biggest issues in society across education, health, community inclusion and participation. Managers and players from the EFL’s 72 clubs will be attending events up and down the country including projects that target mental health, disability and obesity. Matty will be taking part in a session put on by Club Doncaster Foundation at a local primary school, with Sky Sports News coming down to film Matty and the kids and showcase our community work to the nation. Tomorrow’s focus on the EFL’s community work has proved a great opportunity to shine a light on the incredible amount of stuff going on at our Foundation and throughout the club. We have put Matty forward as our nomination for the PFA Community Player of the Year, an award won by Andy Butler last year. We do not know yet if Matty has been shortlisted, but the EFL have worked with us to help tell his story ahead of tomorrow which shows we have struck a chord with them. As well as seeing Matty on Sky Sports News tomorrow afternoon, you will also be able to read interviews with him on the BBC Sport website and in the

Guardian this week after reporters came to the Keepmoat Stadium to discuss his community work, as well as the importance he places on mental health after his personal experiences following the loss of his brother Ross to cancer last summer. I’ve used this column before to highlight how inspirational Matty has been over the past 12 months or so, and these interviews will tell his story to a wider audience. We expect the BBC Sport interview to be published today or tomorrow, with the Guardian expecting to run their piece on Wednesday. There’s so much that goes on across Club Doncaster. And it’s a sign of how much we stand out as an organisation that we get to be front and centre in a national awareness day. Tonight’s fixture is the second time we have been featured live on Sky Sports at home this season. Last year we also had two live home matches shown live, as well as one away. While the main criteria for selection remains the interest in the match which can generate viewing figures, we get positive feedback for the facilities and welcome we provide so that the guys look forward to coming back. Again, this only reflects well upon us as a club and is yet another thing that helps us stand out from other clubs in Sky Bet Leagues One and Two. Luke Thornhill Club Doncaster media manager

43

SUPPORTERS Official Supporters Club Welcome to all the Bradford fans who have come down the M62 for tonight’s Sky Bet League One game. I hope they all enjoy their journey and have a safe trip back - no doubt they’ll have to put up with a load of temporary 50mph limits once they get back on the motorway. We’ve had two good games at their place already this season and I hope tonight is the same, though we are all rooting for a home win. We had some great support on our recent away games, we were unlucky at Rotherham but the fans were magnificent throughout - while we again travelled in good numbers last Saturday to Southend United for a game played on a pitch that looked like it had been ploughed up to plant potatoes. If you live in the Retford, Harworth, Rossington area, why not use the Supporters Club home bus, which runs every home match at a very competitive price. If you live on Bawtry Road you can also use this service at £1 return. It runs direct to the Keepmoat Stadium and back and there no need to book, just turn up. Please let us know if would like picking up on Bawtry Road - call 07961727769 for more information. Our North branch also run coaches to most away games from Carcroft, Adwick, and points along the A19, a good active branch, it makes it much easier to travel

44

if you live that way on – call 07780316923 for more information. We also run coaches for certain games from the Sprotborough area, and the travel club have pick ups in the Hatfield area. Please remember there is no alchohol is allowed on the coaches. The Supporters Club weekend away will be for the last game of the season, away at Oldham on April 27-29. We are looking at stopping at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Southport from Friday til the Sunday, cost will be about £125 per person, bed, breakfast and evening meal. The Branch Dinner dance this season will be Friday May 11 at the Mount Pleasant Hotel. Rovers til I die Paul Mayfield

DRFCFans4Foodbanks Rovers supporters have now donated more than 500kg of food to a fans-led foodbank collection after a record haul at the Charlton game. Organisers set an ambitious target of collecting 100kg prior to the visit of Charlton Athletic, meaning the overall raised would hit 500kg and match the landmark 500th EFL appearance of Rovers captain James Coppinger on the same day. And with a record number of donations prior to the game - the aim was just achieved. That included a significant donation from Club Doncaster staff after a collection from staff based at the Keepmoat Stadium. The DRFCFans4Foodbanks initiative launched just before Christmas with a foodbank collection point outside the Belle Vue Bar at every home game with volunteers there to accept donations. The foodbank collection will be in place again for the visit of Fleetwood Town on Saturday February 17.

Suggested items are: Cereal Soup Pasta Rice Pasta sauce Beans Tinned meat Tinned vegetables Tea/coffee Tinned fruit Biscuits Non-food items are also welcome, such as: Toiletries – deodorant, toilet paper, shower gel, shaving gel, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, tooth paste, hand wipes Household items – laundry liquid detergent, laundry powder, washing up liquid Feminine products – sanitary towels and tampons Baby supplies – nappies, baby wipes and baby food. (Please note, due to advice from UNICEF they cannot accept formula milk.)

Fans can also leave donations at the Club Doncaster Box Office or club shop on nonmatchdays.

Since 2000, the Football Foundation has been transforming grassroots facilities across the country thanks to the generous investment provided by the Premier League, The FA and the Government via Sport England.

39,160 If every changing room the Football Foundation ever funded was combined, 39,160 players would be able to change simultaneously!

If every all-weather and natural grass pitch the Football Foundation funded was laid back-toback, it would stretch from London’s BIG BEN TO CALAIS!

x351

If every goalpost the Football Foundation funded were stacked on top of each other, it would create a structure equivalent to the height of 351 WEMBLEY STADIUMS!

The total area of every all-weather pitch the Football Foundation has funded is equivalent to NEW YORK’S CENTRAL PARK!

x6 All of the Football Foundation funded natural grass pitches equate to an area that is SIX TIMES THE SIZE OF MONACO!

CLUB DONCASTER FOUNDATION

Doncaster Kicks travelled to St James’ park last Saturday to face their Newcastle United counterparts. The side fought valiantly against a wellestablished side, and hope to arrange more friendlies as they continue their Doncaster Kicks journey. As a thank you for travelling the 121 miles up north, the team were also invited to watch Newcastle United beat Southampton 3-0 in the Premier League. Kicks co-ordinator, Mark Cooper said: “It was a great day with a great set of lads, and an experience they will look back on with great fondness.

52

“Newcastle were a great side and it just goes to show that the steady flow of games really gels a team together: we can’t wait until we’ve develop more so that it’s more than just evening sessions. “We’re all really proud of the determination these lads have each week, so I’m pleased they got to see a real treat in the Newcastle United clash with Southampton.” For more information about the Doncaster Kicks programme contact Mark on 01302 764663 or visit the website at www. clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk.

Nine Rovers fans cycled 33 miles along the Trans Pennine trail ahead of the Sky Bet League One game at Rotherham United.

“It was a huge challenge for us all, many of the group hadn’t been on a bike in years, but what was great to hear was that many of them want to start cycling now.

Between them, they burnt a whopping 11,700 calories, the equivalent of 41 slices of pizza or 57 pints of beer

“We’re looking to put on more of these events throughout the year for anyone who is interested in challenging themselves, meeting new friends and adapting a new healthy lifestyle.”

The event was a fantastic way to get Doncaster cycling, and was made even better with the free use of equipment and bikes thanks to DMBC and Club Doncaster Foundation’s bike library Health and wellbeing co-ordinator Scott Copeland said: “I’m so proud of everyone who did the ride, the work ethos to make it through the 26 miles and keep everyone going was incredible to see.

There are a range of adult and children’s bikes and equipment available to borrow from Club Doncaster Foundation’s bike library, free of charge. For more information about how to borrow one, or the activities provided by Club Doncaster Foundation, contact the team on 01302 764663.

CLUB DONCASTER Richard Horne felt the Dons produced their best performance of the season so far in the 44-6 win over Whitehaven in Betfred League One last Sunday. The victory was the Dons’ third in a row at the start of 2018, and the head coach saw plenty of positives against the Cumbrian outfit. He said: “It was the most pleasing performance of the season so far, I thought our intent in everything we did was really good and we did a good job on them. “We defended really well, there were times when we had to scramble and it looked as though Whitehaven were going to score, but we managed to come up with some solid defending. “We have pride in protecting our try-line, the only try we let in was a real soft one

54

and we need to stop conceding those sorts of scores, but I’m happy with the performance.” The Dons scored nine tries in the game at the Keepmoat Stadium, against a team who lost just four games throughout the 2017 league campaign. Horne added: “ I didn’t think we were that great with the ball in hand when we got in good areas, we couldn’t really get set but the times when we did we executed them really well and created things off the back of that. To put that many points on a physical team like Whitehaven is always pleasing, we wanted to play quick and that could cause them a few problems. “It will give us huge confidence, now -we’ve set our standards we need to make sure we stick to them.”
