TUL L 1 0 0 – F OOT B A L L R E MEM B ERS WA LTER TULL N O B A R R I E RS M E DA L CH A L L ENGE Remember Walter Tull and stand up against discrimination by doing the No Barriers medal challenge One hundred years ago, on the 25th March 1918, during the final year of the First World War, footballer Walter Tull was killed in action at the age of just 29. Before the outbreak of war in 1914, Tull’s playing career had seen him make more than 100 senior appearances for Northampton Town, before becoming the first infantry officer of black heritage in the British Army to lead his men into battle. From the football pitch to pitch battle, he made history and was an inspiration to others. To mark the centenary of Walter Tull’s death, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and Big Ideas in conjunction with the EFL, Football Association and Premier League’s Football Remembers initiative invite schools, football teams and youth, arts and voluntary groups to celebrate his life and achievements through Tull 100 – Football Remembers.

A word from the manager

Darren Ferguson Good afternoon. I’d like to welcome Karl Robinson, as well as the supporters, players and staff of Oxford United. Karl is a manager I have a lot of respect for, we have had a healthy rivalry over the years and I am sure today will be a keenly contested game. We were all a little frustrated to have to settle for a point from Tuesday’s game against Bury. We were in control after a great period of play before they pulled a goal back, we lacked a bit of discipline but showed good character to ensure we came back and got a draw. We need to see that result in context, though, as we have only lost three in our last 19 matches.

reserves last Tuesday. He threw himself into a few crunching tackles which will do him good and give him a lot of belief - he has a chance of featuring again in the first-team this season. Today is our annual Junior Takeover Day, which is always a great day to be involved with. Toby Hopson will be joining me before the match, coming into my office to discuss tactics then going in to meet the players and help give them some prematch advice. The Takeover Day is a great event put on by Club Doncaster Foundation every year, I hope all the young fans who are helping out enjoy their day with us. Enjoy the game.

There has been some real progresison throughout the club as the season has gone on and we can still look up rather than down for the final five games of the season. Four of our five remaining games are at home, and although there are some really tough opponents to visit we know we have the players to cause them problems and win those matches. It was pleasing to see Danny Andrew play 45 minutes for the Development side against Mansfield

Thoughts of the chief executive

Gavin Baldwin Good afternoon, and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to welcome the owners, supporters, players and staff of Oxford United who have travelled up for today’s fixture. We feel we can finish the season on a real high by continuing the current strong run of form. We were very happy with our Season Membership sales. This is always a key part of the year for us, and the backing we received strengthens our hand as we prepare for our summer business. I would like to add my congratulations to those which have already been said for Matty Blair, who was recently named PFA Community Player of the Year for Sky Bet League One and had a trip to London last weekend to celebrate his achievement. Matty is one of those figures you cannot help but like. He is popular with everyone around the club, and the enthusiasm he shows for the club’s community work is evident in everything he does – whether it is in training every day, spending time with other staff or running as fast as he can down the right wing for us.

the trophies, we are incredibly proud of the work we put in to appeal to families and to engage with the local community. Today is our annual Junior Takeover Day, which is organised by Club Doncaster Foundation and is always a highlight of the year for the staff. Liam Thompson will be joining me as our junior chief executive today, I hope he and all our junior staff enjoy the day. It will be a busy day for many of us today, and I will be joining our Supporters Board before the game to look at a number of key issues around fan experiences to see how we can continue to improve. I was recently informed of the death of Bobby Dawson, who was born locally and went on to make 28 appearances in goal for us in the late sixties. I’d like to offer my condolences to his family. Enjoy the game.

Rovers have done particularly well in the category at the EFL Awards, with Andy Butler shortlisted two years ago and winning the overall award the EFL last season. Feedback from the EFL makes clear we were highly regarded in other categories such as the Community Trust and Family Club awards. Regardless of

I know anytime I come down to the ground there will be events going on, I know I’ll get a reply to a message no matter what time I send it. “It really is the best club I’ve been at in terms of its community work, and I’ve been lucky to be at some very good clubs. “I’ve said it repeatedly, but this club and myself are a very good fit and the way the past year has worked out has only increased that. I could not have been in a better place.” The past 12 months have been an emotional rollercoaster for Matty. This time last year the club were celebrating promotion back to Sky Bet League One, then he became a father for the first time, then he lost his brother Ross after a battle with cancer. That is a lot for anyone to take in, and eventually it became too much for Matty – he was

struggling to even get out of bed in the morning. After manager Darren Ferguson made sure he took some time off and took a brief holiday with his family, he benefitted from speaking to a professional from outside the club. it has been needed. The same goes for absolutely everyone at the training ground, whether it is Sam and Vicky who prepare our food, the coaches or anyone else - there is an incredible sense of unity and family at this club. “Whether staff, team-mates or fans – people don’t know how much they helped me without them even knowing it. My family – my wife and little boy – have been my rock, but it feels like everyone I come across at Doncaster has been looking out for me.” On the pitch, Matty has been enjoying a good run in the team. He has started the past six games, a period which has seen the team stablise in mid-table and ensure everyone can look up rather than down for the final fixtures. “I know it is a cliche, but we really are only taking it one game at a time, getting the best result we can then getting ready to go again,” he adds. cannot thank the people here enough,” he says.

“But we do have a young team which is very encouraging for the future.

“The gaffer has been brilliant with me, as have all the lads and supporters – when it was tough, it felt like everyone had my back.

“The gaffer has brought in some talented players with a mentality to build, so when fans look at the impact players like Alfie Beestin have had they can be very positive looking at what we can do next season and beyond.

“The same with staff. Luke, the media manager who organises all the player visits, has helped more than he realises from just being there. The same with Mary, our football secretary, who has really been a mother figure for me when

“But, and this is a typical footballer’s mentality, I’m not looking beyond the next game. We’ll take it one game at a time and finish as far up the table as we can.”

Andy Butler used his time out of the Rovers side to reflect on how the 2017/18 campaign has gone so far. The club captain made his first start in almost three months against Bury on Tuesday after returning from a knee injury, and has used that time to look for ways to improve himself. He said: “I love playing games of football so being out injured isn’t something I enjoy, it’s given me a chance to reflect and I used it as a chance to strengthen my body back up. “I wouldn’t say I needed rest but I think it has definitely helped me to look back and see where I can improve based on how I’ve played so far this season. I think it’s been a pretty good season, a few people doubted whether or not I could play in

14

League One again but I feel great and I always knew I would adapt to it.” Rovers are currently on a five-game unbeaten run in Sky Bet League One, and Butler says they will look to keep pushing further up the table with five league games remaining. He added: “We’ve reached 50 points and it’s about pushing on now, people will see that we’re safe but we don’t want to ease off and we have five big games to go. “Getting in the top 10 would be a good achievement and we feel we should be higher, the other promoted clubs are above us at the moment but with the players we have we feel we should be higher in the table. I went to most games while I’ve been injured and it has been a joy to watch at times.”

AWAY TEAM OXFORD UNITED

TOP STOPPER The former England youth international stopper signed for The U’s in the summer of 2016, following three years in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers. Eastwood began his career with Huddersfield Town, spending time away on loan at Woking and Bradford City. He then joined The U’s for his first spell in 2010, but failed to make an appearance at the Kassam Stadium, and instead choosing to move back to West Yorkshire with FC Halifax Town in 2011. He made a move back into league football with Portsmouth in 2012, before making the move to Lancashire with Blackburn the following season. He spent three seasons with Rovers, making just 13 league appearances, before signing with The U’s for a second time in 2016.

1

SIMON EASTWOOD

MIDFIELD MAESTRO The young midfielder joined from Premier League giants Liverpool in January 2018 on a three-and-ahalf-year deal. Brannagan made his Reds debut in 2015, coming on in their Europa League game against Bordeaux, before making his first start against Bournemouth later on that year in the League Cup. Later on that season, he went on to make his Premier League debut against Swansea City and finished his breakthrough season making nine appearances for the Liverpool first team. He spent time on loan at Fleetwood Town in the second half of last season, helping the Cod Army to the League One play-offs. He arrived at the Kassam in the last transfer window, with Oxford paying an undisclosed fee for his services.

18

11

CAMERON BRANNAGAN

DEFENSIVE ROCK The experienced defender was named as club captain in November.

30

JOHN MOUSINHO

Mousinho started out with Brentford in 2005, making his debut against his current employers. After three years with the Bees, Mousinho made a move to Wycombe, where he helped them to win promotion from League Two. His next move was equally successful, signing with Stevenage in 2010, and scoring the winning goal in the League Two play-off final at Old Trafford against Torquay later that season. He signed for Preston in 2012, spending time on loan at Gillingham and, before joining Burton Albion in 2014. His time with the Brewers was his most successful to date, winning back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship, before joining The U’s last summer.

DEADLY STRIKER Another well-travelled player in The U’s ranks, the striker started out his career around the nonleague pyramid before making his move up into league football.

WES THOMAS

9

His first spell in league football saw him join Dagenham & Redbridge, before making moves to Cheltenham Town and Crawley Town, eventually joining AFC Bournemouth in 2012. He spent time out on loan at Portsmouth, Blackpool and Birmingham City, the latter of which would be one of Thomas’ next permanent clubs, via a brief stint with Rotherham United. Loans away from St Andrews at Swindon Town and Bradford City followed, before a permanent move to the Kassam in 2016, where he has averaged a goal every three games since joining.

19

JOINT FIVE-A-SIDE GOALKEEPER Paul REECE The keeper began his professional career with Stoke City, making just two appearances for the Potters, both coming towards the end of the 1986-87 season. Reece left Stoke at the end of that season, managing to scoop the Player of the Year Award in his first season with Kettering Town, which led Grimsby Town to sign him for a fee of £10,000. He left for Rovers four years later in 1992, but made just one appearance for Rovers, departing South Yorkshire just one year later for Oxford United. Reece made 39 appearances for the U’s.

DEFENDER Harry WORLEY The defender’s first step into professional football came with Rovers in 2007, joining on loan from Chelsea, making 10 appearances for the club. Loan spells with Carlisle United and Leicester City followed, with Worley then going on to sign a permanent deal with the Foxes in 2008, making just a handful more appearances for Leicester, and spending spells out on loan to Luton Town and Crewe Alexandra. Worley signed for the U’s in 2010, spending three years with Oxford before signing for Newport County. He scored the Exiles’ first EFL goal for 25 years on his debut against Accrington Stanley in 2013, before brief spells with Stevenage, Hartlepool United and then Salford City later on in his career.

20

MIDFIELDER Craig NELTHORPE The midfielder was a product of the Rovers youth set-up, and at just 17 made his first-team debut as a substitute in a 3-3 draw against Luton Town on the final day of the 2004/05 season. Nelthorpe made 10 appearances for Rovers, scoring once, and spent much time away from Rovers - going out on loan six times with various non-league clubs. Nelthorpe left Rovers in 2009, moving to Oxford United, for whom he went on to make 16 appearances, scoring twice. After a brief stint with York City, Nelthorpe has gone on to become somewhat of a journeyman around the non-league set-up, with spells at no less than 15 clubs, including time with Gateshead, Gainsborough Trinity and North Ferriby United, and he is currently with Ossett Town in the Northern Premier League.

STRIKERS Billy WHITEHURST The forward had various spells playing for clubs around South Yorkshire while also working for the local council as a bricklayer. Whitehurst had spells with Hull City, Newcastle

United, Reading and Sunderland, as well as making 40 appearances for the Oxford United between 1986 and 1988. Whitehurst ended his professional career with Rovers, making 20 appearances and scoring once, during which he also signed on loan for Crewe Alexandra.

Lewis GUY The striker started his career with Newcastle United, appearing for them once in the UEFA Cup. Guy (pictured) joined Rovers on loan during the 2004–05 season and after impressing during his brief loan spell, signed a permanent deal in 2005. Guy scored three times in his first season, but he formed an effective partnership with Paul Heffernan, and he later went on to be part of the victorious Rovers side in the 2008 Football League One play-off final. After a couple of loan spells during his final years with Rovers, he moved to Milton Keynes Dons, from whom he spent time on loan with Oxford United in 2011. Guy retired from professional football in 2016 having last played for Scottish League Two side Annan Athletic.

MY WEEK: PFA LEAGUE ONE COMMUNITY PLAYER OF Being a professional player is about much more than a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon, as Matty Blair explains MONDAY Every morning I get up at 7am and am straight out with the dog for a walk, which takes half an hour to 45 minutes. After chance for a little play with my son I leave the house at 8.15am for training. My drive to the training ground is about 15 minutes, where after getting changed I have breakfast – usually two poached eggs and beans. We have a debrief from the Saturday game at 9.45am. Anyone who played on Saturday does a recovery cooldown session, which is a bit of stretching followed by time on the bike or swimming pool.

THURSDAY We have team meetings from 9.45am about the next opposition, split into defence, midfield and attack to understand what we will come up against. The training session will be focused on shape work, with a light gym session to follow. Our media team will have a player doing their pre-match press conference alongside the gaffer, which means stopping by the stadium after training. There may also be another player appearance – I’ve been to quite a few Fit Rovers sessions which are put on by the Foundation on Thursday tea-times.

TUESDAY Training is a tougher, what we call an overload day. We’ll also have some gym work to do after training, which I like to do before having something to eat. If I have a player visit it tends to be on this day - the training schedule doesn’t change that much, but I have to keep a closer eye on the time to ensure I’m ready to make it to the appearance which tends to be about 1.30pm. A lot of visits have been to local primary schools answering questions from kids, the Rovers Roadshow, as well as joining courses put on by the Club Doncaster Foundation or Club Doncaster Academy on the pitches by the Keepmoat Stadium.

FRIDAY Training is kept light, with more work on what we want to do in Saturday’s game. Friday afternoon is a time for rest - my wife looks after Archie so I am ready for the following day. I always have a pastabased meal in the evening, though my wife has got a bit sick of it every Friday so we have to make her something different every now and again. I have a nice early night ready for matchday MATCHDAY 9am: I have a bit of a lie in if we’re at home, but once I’m up am still out with the dog the same as during the week just to stretch the legs and get them going. The morning is spent relaxing with the family, watching TV and resting.

WEDNESDAY This is a rest day to spend with the family, as well as do the odd bits and bobs around 11.15am: I have beans on toast as a prethe house and any paperwork. match meal.

22

THE YEAR 12.15pm: I leave for the ground. We have to report by 1.20pm for a team meeting, but I like to get down early so I can clear my head and focus, and ensure anything I need to do before the match isn’t rushed. 1.20pm: We have a video meeting going through how we will try and score against that day’s opponents. 2.20pm: We have to be ready to warm-up at this point, and have half an hour out on the pitch getting ready for the game. 4.45pm: After clapping our supporters, who have been brilliant with me, we have an immediate debrief in the changing room before a cooldown. Anyone who didn’t play does some running. Those who played have five minutes in a cold bath before meeting their families. After a match we can be more relaxed about what we eat, so my wife and I tend to stop off for fish and chips on the way home. I am terrible getting to sleep after a game, so can be pottering around until 2am and have been known to fall asleep on the sofa. SUNDAY Last week I was in London for the EFL Awards, but normally this is a recovery day so I try to take my little boy for a swim.

Words from the Academy manager

KIERAN SCARFF We have recently finalised our decisions on our second year apprentices. As always there are mixed emotions with some positive news for some and disappointing for others. As a result of our discussion as a group of staff Kane Bingley, James Leverton, Lewis Scattergood, Keegan Townrow and Matty Overton have all been informed that they will not be receiving a professional contract. This group of players have shown a real dedication and commitment to their football and this club and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them, their parents and family for this dedication over many years. We all wish them well and fully expect them to go on and be successful in their chosen destinations.

contract in November), James Morris, Jacob Fletcher, Morgan James and Cody Prior have all been offered professional contracts. They have and continue to show the potential we are looking for and they now have a great opportunity to continue to develop. They deserve praise for their efforts, but they also know that there is a lot of hard work ahead of them if they are to develop a long career in this industry. The awarding of these contracts is another example of the support and commitment being shown by the owners, the chief executive and the manager to develop our own players. Next year we will have a group of nine first and second year professionals who will all receive a high level of intensive support designed to give them every opportunity to become an established first team player at Rovers.

Consequently, and in addition to Danny Amos (who agreed his professional John Schofield praised his Development side’s spirit as they came from behind to earn a point against Mansfield Town reserves on Tuesday. Robbie Miller’s second-half equaliser secured a 1-1 draw in Central League North, and Schofield was pleased with the second half display. Schofield said: “We took a lot to get going in the first-half, we spoke a lot about the players showing a willingness to learn and improve and they did that. There were a lot of positives in the game, it was pleasing the way we managed to get back into the games and we competed well for the second 45 minutes.” Rovers side was strengthened by a number of first-team players, with Danny Andrew, Tyler Garratt, Issam Ben Khemis and Andy Williams all getting some much needed game time with a busy few weeks coming up. Schofield added: “All the lads that played set a good benchmark for the younger players in the squad, Andy Williams came in and played really well, which he always does, so credit to him.”

TEN YEARS AGO: DONCASTER ROVERS IN SEASON 2007-08. Part 21 Doncaster Rovers played their final home League game of 2007-08 on Saturday April 26 2008. Their visitors, Luton Town, were already relegated and had endured a wretched season in which they had seen 10 points deducted for going into administration. Rovers suffered two injury blows in the preceding week. Stephen Roberts was out with a strain but of more concern was Sean McDaid’s dislocated knee suffered in a behind-closed-doors friendly. Sam Hird replaced Roberts while Graeme Lee, out for most of the season, was on the bench. Rovers dominated the game and were only prevented from running up a huge score by Luton’s excellent goalkeeper, Dean Brill. As early as the sixth minute he made a fantastic save from a Matt Mills header and then thwarted both James Coppinger and Gareth Roberts. After 34 minutes Brill made another fine stop when Mark McCammon headed a Brian Stock corner, but Mills was on hand to force the loose ball home. Rovers led 1-0 at the break but were hampered when Stock came off injured and they didn’t secure the win until eight minutes from time, McCammon heading in Roberts’ free kick. Some excellent news awaited the players and fans after the game. Carlisle United had lost at Millwall which meant Rovers were now in second, a point clear of both

26

Nottingham Forest and the Cumbrians. A win at Cheltenham in a week’s time would secure automatic promotion. Attention now turned to off field issues and on Thursday May 1, two days before the final game, the adjudication panel announced that Leeds United’s 15 point deduction would stand. The West Yorkshire side were still assured of a play-off slot but could not now achieve automatic promotion. There was much relief in Doncaster, Nottingham and

started a week before, Stock being passed fit. Rovers started rather sluggishly, although Paul Green went close with a header after 13 minutes. The home side grew in confidence and took the lead after 24 minutes, Gillespie scoring from a tight angle after good work by Russell and Connor. Rovers finally got going and Mills and McCammon both had efforts well saved by home goalkeeper Shane Higgs. Rovers trailed at the break and reshuffled their formation, going to a back three with Gareth Roberts moving into a more forward role.

Carlisle. So, on to Cheltenham, a fixture with significance for both sides. A win would secure automatic promotion to the Championship for Rovers, but the home side also required a win to ensure their League One status. Luton and Port Vale were already relegated, and two of Gillingham, AFC Bournemouth, Cheltenham Town and Crewe Alexandra would join then in League Two. Cheered on by 1,562 travelling fans, Rovers fielded the same side that had

This almost paid off when Roberts had a shot brilliantly saved by Higgs who also denied Stock. Rovers sent on J.J. Price, Paul Heffernan and Lewis Guy and the changes bore fruit after 76 minutes. Roberts sent over a cross, Price headed it down and Green hammered home to make it 1-1. Three minutes later Higgs excelled himself, saving brilliantly with his legs to deny Green a second. Then, with five minutes to go, heartbreak for Rovers and jubilation for Cheltenham. Following a free kick Duff fired in a low shot which Connor turned past Neil Sullivan. Rovers fans hoping for help elsewhere were disappointed. Carlisle only drew but Nottingham Forest, the in-form team of late, had beaten Yeovil 3-2 and come up on the rails to snatch second place. Rovers were third and now faced the unpredictable road of the play-offs. John Coyle

NEWS

Doncaster based company John Mee Construction Limited have celebrated a terrific 25-year milestone. Founded in Doncaster in 1993, John Mee Construction Limited was initially incorporated by John F. Mee to carry out Civil Engineering works prior to the year 2004 in which John P. Mee of company John Mee Construction Limited succeeded in purchasing their first Vacuum Excavator shaping the company into the thriving business that this Spring are celebrating their outstanding achievement of 25 years in business. During his Official Silver Partnership at Club Doncaster, business owner John has continuously expressed his pride in supporting Doncaster Rovers and the local community of Doncaster, where 25 years ago the foundations of

38

the company were laid. He said: “We’re incredibly proud of our heritage in South Yorkshire and being able to support the local community through undertaking our Official Partnership with Club Doncaster and enabling us to connect with other local businesses which without the partnership, we may not have had the opportunity to meet. “John Mee Construction Limited turning 25 years old is a huge milestone for the company; it is especially poignant for our company given the turbulent industry and more recently, the unsteady economic climate that we’ve encountered.” Partnership executive at Club Doncaster, Annabelle Foster, said “It is clear to see John’s dedication to supporting the local community of Doncaster where they began their journey 25 years ago.”

The latest from the

Communications team This programme may feel like a bit of a Matty Blair special, with him as the interviewee and the focus for the My Week feature. Everyone at the club was chuffed that he was named PFA Community Player of the Year, and got to head down to the EFL Awards in London to collect his trophy. Enough has been said elsewhere about the respect staff at the club have for Matty, but as the person whose responsibility it is to schedule player appearances I couldn’t ask for a more flexible person to work with. I try not to ask him to do everything, but as someone who moved up to the area after signing and who will do almost anything we asked – search our YouTube channel for him taking part in the recreation of Peter Kay’s iconic video for Tony Christie’s (Is This The Way To) Amarillo song – he definitely ends up doing more than his fair share. As a club we’ve forged a reputation for our community work, with Club Doncaster Foundation engaging with thousands of local people and Blair’s award the third time in as many years one of our players has made the final three out of the 72 EFL clubs for the Community Player of the Year award.

Family Excellence award run by the EFL. Rovers are one of only a handful of clubs to have achieved the mark every season since it was introduced. Mark was very positive about his visit in chats with staff and highlighted Donny Kicks - our programme edited by young fans which is given away for free by Donny Dogs - as something he hadn’t seen elsewhere. Staff are encouraged to think about engagement in everything we do, which leads to some of the stories you may have seen on the website in recent weeks where John Marquis surprised a fan on her birthday and Andy Williams delivered a pizza to a young supporter who was amazed to have his favourite player turn up on his doorstep. Luke Thornhill Club Doncaster media manager Today’s local band to be played before the match, chosen by Sine FM, is The Slow Readers Club and the track is You Opened Up My Heart

Fan engagement is a term that is often thrown around. It can mean many things, but at Rovers the staff feel it means a path to sustainable growth. On Tuesday night we had an unannounced visit from Mark Bradley, who runs the Fan Experience Company and oversees the

SUPPORTERS A good afternoon, and a big Keepmoat Stadium welcome to the U’s fans from Oxford. I hope they have had a safe trip up, enjoy the Keepmoat experience and have a safe trip home, Oxford have not had a brilliant season, and have been struggling in the lower reaches, but have a new manager in Karl Robinson who we have crossed paths with a few times and who seems a good fella. We found the stewards at the Kasaam, Stadium some of the best we had encountered all season, very friendly, helpful and complimentary about the Rovers fans. Well we now have a run of home games after some long away trips in recent years. We have had several away games ending in 0-0 stalemates, at Southend and Gillingham, on pitches that were not at their best, before last weekend’s win at MK Dons. We had great support at Blackpool, Southend, Gillingham and MK Dons - though the stewards at the Priestfield Stadium would not allow the Donny Gnome into the game. That was strange they posed for photos with it on our last visit there! The last away game of the season is at Oldham on April 28. Bus time are in the programme, we also have the supporters weekender in Southport for that game, that will leave Adwick (Wilfredas) at 8am, Infirmary 8.30am and the Keepmoat Stadium at 9am, returning from Southport on the Sunday at 2.30pm, taking in Saturday’s game at Boundary Park.

44

If you live in the Retford, Harworth, Rossington area, why not use the Supporters Club home bus, which runs every home match at a very competitive price. If you live on Bawtry Road you can also use this service at £1 return. It runs direct to the Keepmoat Stadium and back and there no need to book, just turn up. Please let us know if would like picking up on Bawtry Road - call 07961727769 for more information. Our North branch also run coaches to most away games from Carcroft, Adwick, and points along the A19. They are a good active branch, it makes it much easier to travel if you live that way on – call 07780316923 for more information. We also run coaches for certain games from the Sprotborough area, and the travel club have pick ups in the Hatfield area. Please remember there is no alchohol is allowed on the coaches. The Branch Dinner dance this season will be Friday May 11 at the Mount Pleasant Hotel. Rovers til I die Paul Mayfield

DRFCFans4Foodbanks Rovers supporters have now donated more than 500kg of food to a fans-led foodbank collection after a record haul at the Charlton game. Organisers set an ambitious target of collecting 100kg prior to the visit of Charlton Athletic, meaning the overall raised would hit 500kg and match the landmark 500th EFL appearance of Rovers captain James Coppinger on the same day. And with a record number of donations prior to the game - the aim was just achieved. That included a significant donation from Club Doncaster staff after a collection from staff based at the Keepmoat Stadium. The DRFCFans4Foodbanks initiative launched just before Christmas with a foodbank collection point outside the Belle Vue Bar at every home game with volunteers there to accept donations. The foodbank collection will be in place again for the visit of Fleetwood Town on Saturday February 17.

Suggested items are: Cereal Soup Pasta Rice Pasta sauce Beans Tinned meat Tinned vegetables Tea/coffee Tinned fruit Biscuits Non-food items are also welcome, such as: Toiletries – deodorant, toilet paper, shower gel, shaving gel, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, tooth paste, hand wipes Household items – laundry liquid detergent, laundry powder, washing up liquid Feminine products – sanitary towels and tampons Baby supplies – nappies, baby wipes and baby food. (Please note, due to advice from UNICEF they cannot accept formula milk.)

Fans can also leave donations at the Club Doncaster Box Office or club shop on nonmatchdays.

CLUB DONCASTER FOUNDATION

Today marks Rovers’ annual Junior Takeover day, which sees children from Club Doncaster Foundation partner schools take control of all the jobs required for a smooth matchday. Twenty-seven children will be taking the reigns on some of the most exciting roles at the Keepmoat Stadium including first team manager, player, groundsman, media manager and tannoy announcer. Organised by Club Doncaster Foundation, the day has been a huge success in recent years and is a staple part of the flagship schools programme. Schools co-ordinator Kelly JacksonPowell said: “The smiles on the kids faces are a joy to witness and sums up why we do what we do. For many of them, it really is a once in a lifetime opportunity and allows them to not only engage with this family football club

52

but also inspire children to explore future careers. We have had many children tell us after games in the past that they now have a dream to pursue the career of the role they took, and that always fills us with so much pride.” The children involved in today’s match day are: Toby Hopson, Jack Bolger, Liam Thompson, Oliver Slack, Ellis Leone, Aliza Khan, Alice McIlwraith, Grace Porter, Robbie Oliver, James Cota, Zach Webley, Joel Diakiese, Ethan Stoddart, Alex Hopson, Jayden Curran, Methuki Imaduwa, Lottie Dawson, Samantha Bugg, Kolby Harmer, Dylan Pridmore, Maddison Doyle, Lillie Evangelou, Alvvia Moran, Azaan Rafa, Azaan Rafa, Jac Bateson, Rachel Lumb. For more information about the different schools packages your school can be involved with, or how to be involved with the activities run by the Foundation, contact the team on 01302 764663.

Club Doncaster Foundation have secured funding to deliver their cycling activities in the community for a further 12 months. DMBC and Yorkshire Bike Libraries have agreed to extend the funding, which allows Doncaster residents access to free bike hire as well as donating unwanted bikes to be recycled and used in the community.

five bikes, having just purchased new ones. On Tuesday our mechanic Mark made the adjustments necessary and on Wednesday these same bike were used in the community to teach adults how to safely ride on the roads.”

There are a range of adult and children’s bikes and equipment available to borrow from Club Doncaster Foundation’s bike library, free of charge.

During the Easter holidays, the demand for bikes was particularly high – with families hiring bikes and trailers to explore the local area. If you are interested in borrowing a bike, all you need is photo ID and a £10 deposit, which will be refunded when you return the bike.

Health and wellbeing co-ordinator, Scott Copeland said :“ Never has the link between the two pots of funding worked so seamlessly as it did recently. On Monday a local school came to donate

CLUB DONCASTER Richard Horne felt his side did well defensively as they kept Hemel Stags scoreless at the Keepmoat Stadium. The 60-0 win in Betfred League One kept the Dons at the top of the table, and Horne was pleased with their overall display. He said: “We knew Hemel would never give in, it was a game that we felt we should be winning and we spoke a lot before the game about keeping the scoreline to a zero.

Horne believes the victory against the Stags will set the Dons up nicely for the Challenge Cup fifth round tie against Featherstone Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium tomorrow. He added: “We scored in patches and when we play we’ve got the skill and strike on the edges to post points, it can get a little messy at times and we lose a bit of our composure.

“It was a big focus to keep our defence tight, it was more about the performance rather than the result given how the two sides looked ahead of the game.

“We’ve had a few lads come in and they always do a job when we need them, they understand how important they are and they’re key to adding that squad value.”

“I didn’t think we were great in the firsthalf but we improved after that, there were too many errors and we maybe tried to push our attack a bit too much.”

The Dons are in action in the Challenge Cup when they host Championship side Featherstone Rovers in the Keepmoat Stadium tomorrow.

DONCASTER ROVERS BELLES Belles boss Neil Redfearn was delighted with his side’s first half display in the win over Watford Ladies, claiming it was the best he has seen them play so far. The Belles ran out 3-1 winners and the manager has hailed the ruthless first half performance which saw the league leaders storm into a 3-0 lead in half an hour. Despite a fluke consolation from the visitors and tricky second half conditions, the Belles manager was pleased to see his side go six points clear at the top. He said: “The first half was as good as I’ve seen us play. “We could have easily had more than three goals. Our passing and movement was a joy to watch. If it was six or seven

at half time, it wouldn’t have been an injustice. That first half was how to play football. “The second half was a bit of a war of attrition but it was a pretty convincing win and I thought the girls were superb: I was really pleased with that first half.” Scotland Under-19 international, Kirsty Hanson came in for praise after she stole the show, claiming an assist in a rampant performance down the left for the Belles. He added: “She was unplayable. It was like tackling smoke: she was so good. We’ve worked with Kirsty on creating space to get the ball in and her movement to give her the chance to get at people and her hard work is paying off.”
