Darren Ferguson TUL L 1 0 0 – F OOT B A L L R E MEM B ERS WA LTER TULL N O B A R R I E RS M E DA L CH A L L ENGE Remember Walter Tull and stand up against discrimination by doing the No Barriers medal challenge One hundred years ago, on the 25th March 1918, during the final year of the First World War, footballer Walter Tull was killed in action at the age of just 29. Before the outbreak of war in 1914, Tull’s playing career had seen him make more than 100 senior appearances for Northampton Town, before becoming the first infantry officer of black heritage in the British Army to lead his men into battle. From the football pitch to pitch battle, he made history and was an inspiration to others.
Good evening, and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium for tonight’s final game of the Sky Bet League One season. I would like to welcome Paul Cook, as well as the supporters, players and staff of Wigan Athletic. They have had a great season and have earned a deserved promotion back to the Championship. We have a young squad and we have to chalk this down as a satisfactory season. We would love to have secured a top-half finish but, having won promotion last year, to be 14th - and having comfortably stayed up - going into the final fixture is a good place for us to build from. There is plenty of improvement left in my players, most of whom have competed at this level for the first time this season.
To mark the centenary of Walter Tull’s death, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and Big Ideas in conjunction with the EFL, Football Association and Premier League’s Football Remembers initiative invite schools, football teams and youth, arts and voluntary groups to celebrate his life and achievements through Tull 100 – Football Remembers.
And I think anyone who has been at most of our games this year will have seen the gains that have already happened.
Find out how to earn your medal, receive your free Tull100 resource pack and apply for small scale funding by emailing tull100@big-ideas.org
We learnt from some of the lapses in concentration that cost us in the opening stages of the campaign, and showed our own determination to make sure we came away from most games with something, while also coping with a lengthy injury list at times. What we have is a very dedicated and honest group of players - they have

given everything to the club this season. It has been a real team effort, with a really important role played by my assistant Gavin Strachan, goalkeeping coach Paul Gerrard and everyone at the club. Everyone is striving to ensure the club is the best it can be, no matter what role they play in it. The same goes for chief executive Gavin Baldwin and the owners, whom I speak to a lot as we look to drive the club forward, and our football secretary Mary Lally. But the biggest thank you is to the supporters. The backing we have had throughout the campaign has been brilliant. Everyone at the club appreciates the commitment made by fans to follow us up and down the country. That is our motivation to keep going, to keep putting in the hours to ensure we can have as much success as we can – we’ll work hard over the summer to ensure we come back for pre-season ready to give our all again. Enjoy the game.

Good evening, and welcome to the final game of the season here at the Keepmoat Stadium. I would like to welcome the owners, supporters, staff and players of Wigan Athletic. With the visitors selling out their allocation of tickets we are hopefully in for a good atmosphere, and I know the players will be determined to sign off for the campaign with a good performance and result. As we look back on the 2018/19 season, we can do so with a sense of pride and optimism. Everyone connected with the club wants us to be challenging in the higher reaches of the table, but the progression of the team and club is evident. This has ultimately been a season of consolidation, but it has had some really high moments and there are some solid foundations for us to build from over the summer and into next season. We have a young and talented squad, all of whom have plenty of scope for further development. We can be content with how this season has gone, but it is something everyone is looking to improve upon for next season.
with games coming thick and fast. No matter how tired people are, they have continued to give their all and come into work every day with a smile on their face and determination to help us grow. I could not ask for more from our staff. That hard work was rewarded recently with us being one of only 10 clubs in the EFL to achieve the gold award in the Family Excellence awards. This is a real achievement which deserves a great deal of respect. We are in the top 10 clubs in the entire EFL in terms of what we put on for young fans. This is all part of our plans for long-term sustainable growth - these young fans will hopefully stick with us for life now. So well done to marketing manager Mark Hughesman as well as all the coaching staff from Club Doncaster Foundation who lead all sorts of activities. Thank you for your fantastic support this season. Your backing has really helped the lads at times. Enjoy your summer, and we can look forward to next season with some real optimism. Enjoy the game.
I have to use this opportunity to thank the club’s dedicated staff for their efforts this season. There are lots of people behind the scenes that have put 10 solid months of graft in for the club, and the past few weeks have been particularly demanding

The left-back played 87 minutes of the game having already suffered the injury, and was as shocked as anyone when he discovered afterwards that he would be out for the majority of the season.
“It changes you as a person and makes you appreciate what you’re doing for a living everyday, and now I just take everyday as it comes and just keep doing what I’m doing.”
“It was so hard to take, I’d done it three minutes into the Wimbledon game and we didn’t even know until the Monday when I had a scan. It was tough and you have a bad spell to begin with but I had to focus on getting back,” he says.
Andrew has worked hard to shave some time off his recovery after initially being told he wouldn’t feature again in the 2017/18 campaign, and has played in a few development games to ensure he is ready for a return to first-team action.

To continue the interview with the defender we asked him a few short fire questions about more quirky topics.
“The matches being postponed were annoying for everyone apart from me, when I saw the games being called off I knew they would be played in the final few weeks of the season which meant I had more chance of getting on the field. “I had some hope that I may get something in there and it filled me with some confidence that the manager has been talking to get me some minutes, if he does decide to put me in the squad then I’ll be ready to go.” If the 27-year-old does manage to get on the field against Wigan Athletic in this afternoon’s final game of the season, and that all depends on how he reacted to playing for 90 minutes in the Development side on Tuesday, it will give him a chance to give something back to the Rovers fans who have supported him throughout his recovery process.

Rovers club captain Andy Butler was named Rovers Player of the Year at the 12th annual Star Sports Awards on Monday evening. The centre-back picked up the trophy after coming top of the match ratings in the Doncaster Free Press, who are part of the same newspaper group as the Star. He was joined on stage by Rovers manager Darren Ferguson as he received the trophy from the Star’s deputy head of sport Liam Hoden - who has covered every Rovers game this season for the Free Press. Butler said: “I think it’s been a pretty good season for Rovers and myself, a few people doubted whether or not I could

play in League One again but I feel great and I always knew I would adapt to it well enough. “I feel fit and look after myself now better than I ever have - you have to eat the right things, train and rest at the right times. “We’ve got everything we need at the club to help us do that. “I love playing games of football so being out injured earlier in the season wasn’t something I enjoyed, but it gave me a chance to reflect and I used it as a chance to strengthen my body back up. I wouldn’t say I needed rest but I think it has definitely helped me to look back and see where I can improve based on how I’ve played so far this season.”

TOP STOPPER
DEFENSIVE ROCK
The England youth international stopper is on a season-long loan from Brighton and Hove Albion.
The towering central defender signed for the Latics in the summer of 2016.
Walton joined Brighton from Plymouth Argyle in 2013, making his debut for the Seagulls in the League Cup away at Tottenham Hotspur, before making his first league start a few days later, ironically against the Latics.
Burn signed for Darlington in 2009, joining the side after playing in non-league and working in a supermarket, spending two years with the Quakers, before signing for then Premier League side Fulham in 2011 following Darlo’s relegation to the Conference. Burn went on loan to Yeovil Town in 2012, and was a key part in the side as they won promotion via the play-offs to the Championship. The following season saw Burn go out on loan again, this time to Birmingham City, where he spent half a season with Blues before returning to Craven Cottage where he was a constant feature in the side. He signed a three-year deal with the Latics upon his arrival at the DW Stadium in 2016.
Much of Walton’s time with the Seagulls has been spent away from the Amex Stadium, with spells on loan at Bury, Plymouth and Southend United, as well as spending the first part of last season with Luton Town. The Latics’ keeper has also made 12 appearances at various youth levels for England, with his last international cap coming for the U21s against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2016.

The Northern Ireland international has spent yet another season on fire as he looks to help the Latics return to the Championship.
Morsy began his professional career with Port Vale, after spending much of his youth career with hometown club Wolverhampton Wanderers. He spent four years with Vale, helping them to secure League Two promotion in his final season, before making the move to Derbyshire to join Chesterfield in 2013. His first season was equally as successful, as he helped to guide the Spireites to the League Two title, as well as a trip to Wembley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy the same season, where they narrowly missed out to Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough United. Morsy joined the Latics in 2016 and helped them to the League One title that same season.

He helped them to promotion from League One as well as scoring twice in a famous 4-0 win over Manchester United in the League Cup at Stadium MK. He joined the Latics in 2015 and scored 25 goals in his first season with Wigan as he fired them to the League One title and earned himself a place in the Northern Ireland Euro 2016 squad, alongside Luke McCullough.

TEN YEARS AGO: DONCASTER ROVERS IN SEASON 2007-08. Part 23 Sunday May 25 2008 saw Rovers taking on Leeds United in what promised to be the most momentous day in the club’s history. The League One play-off final offered Leeds a chance to bounce back to the Championship at the first attempt.
and Douglas and Lockwood coming on for Price. Leeds finally began to create some chances, Howson and Freedman both shooting wide and Douglas also going close from distance. Despite a nervy four minutes of added time, Rovers held on to secure victory and promotion on their first visit to Wembley.
For Rovers, a win would put them in the second tier of English football for the first time in 50 years.
Leeds manager Gary McAllister admitted “Doncaster deserved it on the day”.
Manager Sean O’Driscoll named the same side that had overcome Southend United 5-1 in the second leg of the play-off semifinal, Rovers: Neil Sullivan: James O’Connor, Sam Hird, Matt Mills, Gareth Roberts; Brian Stock, Richie Wellens, Paul Green; James Coppinger, J. J. Price, James Hayter. Substitutes: Ben Smith, Adam Lockwood, Lewis Guy, Mark McCammon, Gareth Taylor. Leeds: Ankergren: Richardson, Huntington, Michalik, Johnson; Kilkenny, Douglas, Howson, Prutton; Beckford, Freedman. Substitutes: Lucas, Kandol, Hughes, Marques, Sheehan. Leeds had sold their 36,000 allocation and there were a number of white-shirted fans mingling among the red and white hooped Rovers in a crowd of 75,132. It was the team in red and white which seized the initiative, carrying on where they had left off against Southend. Price had a shot deflected wide then Wellens
26
fired into the side netting from a tight angle. Leeds goalkeeper Ankergren was then forced to make two crucial saves, first diving at Coppinger’s feet and then making a one-handed stop as Hayter tried to take the ball around him. It took 20 minutes for Leeds’ first shot, an effort by Beckford being held by Sullivan. Rovers continued to dominate and just before the interval Hayter shot over following a pass from Green. Leeds were relieved to get to the dressing rooms with the score still 0-0. Their relief was to be short lived: two minutes into the second half Green’s shot
was deflected for a corner. Stock swung it over and Hayter, from near the penalty spot, dived to head between Ankergren and Kilkenny and into the net. Rovers were ahead 1-0 and, despite a decent effort from Beckford, continued to dominate with Coppinger having a shot blocked. Just before the hour Leeds had the ball in the net via Prutton following a corner, but the whistle had already blown for a foul on Price. After 71 minutes O’Connor sent Coppinger through but Douglas did well to get across and block. Rovers made changes, McCammon replacing Wellens, who had been roughly handled by Prutton
It was a triumph not only for the players, who had been the better team but for the manager, Sean O’Driscoll, his assistant Richard O’Kelly and the owners. John Ryan, Terry Bramall and Dick Watson. Ryan, who had brought the club back from near extinction and into the League only five years previously, was rightly proud of his club’s achievements. Manager O’Driscoll felt that Rovers were disciplined and organised but, already thinking of next season in the Championship warned that “the work starts here”. Hayter, who had been signed by O’Driscoll and had struggled at times during the season, said: “I’ve been dreaming of this all week.” In saying so he reflected the thoughts of all Rovers fans. To earn promotion by beating a Yorkshire rival at Wembley did indeed seem like a dream come true. John Coyle

The latest from the
Communications team SOCIAL MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS Football programmes have been in the news this week, as it emerged EFL clubs will be invited to vote on a rule which means it is mandatory to have one for every game in their competitions. The dilemma clubs face is similar to that seen in the print media industry in general - advertising revenue and sales are falling, but the costs are not dropping. There is also clear evidence in every fans survey, including our In Rovers We Trust ones, that supporters now view our website and digital media as a primary source of information. For those of us of a certain vintage, programmes are a thing of beauty - I have hundreds, if not thousands, stacked away in the backs of cupboards and under the bed in the spare room - but having edited this programme for two seasons I can see why some clubs would want to scrap it.
clubs to stop doing them. Programmes are a great part of our history, and we’re committed to ensuring any changes to our programme are fans-led. We have a small media team covering the whole of Club Doncaster, and would not be able to provide the service we do without help. Dan Breslin and Alex Gibbings have spent the season with us on placement, with Dan providing our youth team coverage and both helping out at first-team games - filming, doing social media, match reports and co-commentary. Hopefully both will continue as part of the club next season. Luke Thornhill Club Doncaster media manager
Even with a small army of people providing content, producing each programme takes up three full days of my time. That fulfils EFL requirements, but means I am not using that time working on products that are more more popular with supporters.
All 72 EFL Clubs have signed up to a new Chairman’s Charter to help put an end to the dangerous use of pyrotechnics. It is already a criminal offence to enter a football stadium while in possession of a flare, smoke bomb or firework. Any supporter now found to be in breach of the terms of the Chairman’s Charter will also face a minimum three-season Club ban. 42
Rovers will be invited to vote at the EFL’s AGM in the summer, and want to make sure we make the decision supporters want - we’ll invite fans to provide feedback over the next couple of weeks and will use that as the basis for our vote. It should be clear that even if the EFL vote is in favour of not having mandatory programmes, there is no obligation from

SUPPORTERS Official Supporters Club A good afternoon, and a big Keepmoat welcome to the final league game of the season, against promoted Wigan ≠ we welcome fans management and players for this late kick off. Congratulations to them on their achievements, and I hope they have had a safe trip over the Pennines tonight. Wigan, as expected have been up the top of the league trying to get promotion back to the Championship, and should bring a great following. We have achieved a mid-table position, and it gives us something to build on for next season. DRFCFans4Foodbanks Rovers supporters have now donated more than 500kg of food to a fans-led foodbank collection after a record haul at the Charlton game. Organisers set an ambitious target of collecting 100kg prior to the visit of Charlton Athletic, meaning the overall raised would hit 500kg and match the landmark 500th EFL appearance of Rovers captain James Coppinger on the same day. And with a record number of donations prior to the game - the aim was just achieved. That included a significant donation from Club Doncaster staff after a collection from staff based at the Keepmoat Stadium. The DRFCFans4Foodbanks initiative launched just before Christmas with a foodbank collection point outside the Belle Vue Bar at every home game with volunteers there to accept donations. Fans can also leave donations at the Club Doncaster Box Office or club shop on nonmatchdays.

CLUB DONCASTER FOUNDATION Club Doncaster Foundation ran a new and fun incentive this month, Cleats for Seats, which allowed people to ride their bike to Rovers games in exchange for complimentary tickets. Secure storage was provided for the bikes and the riders were able to collect them easily after watching the match. Projects such as this delivered by Club Doncaster Foundation would not be achievable without the continued support of the Doncaster Council and Yorkshire Bike Libraries.
Rovers’ fixture with Oxford United last month marked our annual Junior Takeover day, which saw children from Club Doncaster Foundation partner schools take control of all the jobs required for a smooth matchday. Twenty-five children took the reigns on some of the most exciting roles at the Keepmoat Stadium including first team manager, player, groundsman, media manager and tannoy announcer. Schools co-ordinator Kelly JacksonPowell said: “Junior Takeover Day is one of our best projects, and one that we are really proud of year upon year. The smiles on the kids faces are a joy to witness and just sums up why we do what we do. For many of them, it really is a once in a lifetime opportunity and allows them to not only engage with this family football club but also inspire
52
children to explore future careers. This is just one of the many reasons Doncaster Rovers proves again and again it’s a lot more than a football club.” Each of the mentors on the day made a point of highlighting how professional their ‘mini-me’ was. The children who took part are: Toby Hopson, Jack Bolger, Liam Thompson, Oliver Slack, Ellis Leone, Aliza Khan, Alice McIlwraith, Grace Porter, Robbie Oliver, James Cota, Zach Webley, Joel Diakiese, Ethan Stoddart, Alex Hopson, Jayden Curran, Methuki Imaduwa, Lottie Dawson, Samantha Bugg, Kolby Harmer, Dylan Pridmore, Lillie Evangelou, Alvvia Moran, Jac Bateson, Rachel Lumb. For more information about the different schools packages your school can be involved with, or how to be involved with the activities, contact the Foundation team on 01302 764663.
Health and wellbeing co-ordinator at Club Doncaster Foundation, Scott Copeland, said: “The project was a huge success and we had more than 30 people swap driving to the game for cycling, which is a massive achievement. “With Doncaster battling an obesity problem at the minute, it’s great that the community can come together and increase their exercise by incorporating it with travel.” Father and son duo, Nitzan and Nadav, loved the scheme and were able to have some quality father and son time - and completely free of charge.
Cycling to the game not only reduces their carbon footprint, but also eliminates the cost of petrol to drive to the stadium and the cost of parking. And by taking part in Cleats For Seats, they eliminated the cost of the ticket. For more information about the schemes and projects Club Doncaster Foundation deliver, contact the team on 01302 764663.

Richard Horne says he will look for a response from his side after they were beaten 32-6 by Bradford Bulls at the Keepmoat Stadium.
games so far, we’ve spoken about that and need to find out the reason why we haven’t been able to get the results in the crucial games.”
The Dons’ defeat was just their second in Betfred League One this season, and the head coach admitted they lost to the better team on the day.
The Dons now face away trips to London Skolars – with the team in the capital today – and West Wales Raiders over the course of the next few weeks, and Horne is confident they can get back to winning ways straight away.
He said: “Everyone could see that the better team won on the day, they were well structured and they hit in numbers defensively and we couldn’t deal with that. “We went away from the game-plan and put ourselves under pressure from the first kick-off, we didn’t take our opportunities when they came along and you need to be clinical in those type of games. We haven’t quite managed to raise our game for the bigger league
54
He added: “We’ll have a lot to look at and we will work hard on fixing up the errors that we’ve made. The boys know we weren’t quite there against Bradford so improvements need to be made. “We have to move forward and learn from the things that went against us. We know the level we need to reach to finish at the top of the table.”
Two goals from top scorer Jess Sigsworth helped the Belles to fight back from falling behind to an early London Bees penalty and tighten their grip on the top spot in WSL 2. Kirsty Hanson grabbed a third late on after Katie Wilkinson had given the visitors the lead from the spot. The Bees went ahead after a slip from Belles defender Sophie Bradley-Auckland allowed Destiney Toussaint a clear run on goal. Belles captain Leandra Little charged back to try and cover, but her covering tackle brought down at the crucial moment for a clear foul, and Bees striker Katie Wilkinson stepped up to convert. In-form Belles winger Kirsty Hanson went close to an equaliser on 16 minutes, but
shot narrowly over the bar. Just two minutes later the hosts were awarded a penalty of their own, with Rosie Lane bringing down Bradley-Auckland just inside the box and Sigsworth obliged from 12 yards. That left the side level at the break, though Sam Tierney rattled the bar with a fierce 25-yarder that was the last kick of the first half. Having fallen behind five minutes into the first half, the Belles went ahead four minutes into the second. Little got up to head Maz Pacheco’s well-delivered corner towards goal, and Sigsworth nipped in to divert the ball past the goalkeeper from close range. Sigsworth was again involved as Donny made it 3-1, cutting inside and forcing a low save from Hobbs that fell at the feet of Hanson, who tapped the ball home.
