"WE’VE GOT A LOT STILL TO GIVE, AND WHILE WE KNOW IT’LL BE TOUGH TO COME THROUGH THESE PLAYOFFS WE KNOW THAT WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY"

GRANT McCANN GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM. I’D LIKE TO WELCOME LEE BOWYER, AS WELL AS THE SUPPORTERS, PLAYERS AND STAFF OF CHARLTON ATHLETIC WHO HAVE MADE THE TRIP UP FROM LONDON. We’re playing against a very good team in Charlton, but we also put in good performances against in-form sides Oxford and Coventry in our final two games of the regular season. We’ve already met them three times and had some close games, we know they’ve got some good players so hopefully we can put on some good footballing games. Our approach this week has been the same as any other, I’ve been involved in play-offs numerous times before and know the key is to keep focus and not change things around for the occasion.

have an opportunity today to get a result and put some pressure on Charlton for the second leg. Earlier in the week we announced a new contract for James Coppinger. He has been fantastic for us while I’ve been at the club, he and Andy Butler are the oldest players in the squad but train every day with the intensity you see in matches and deserves the new deal. We are strong at the top end of the pitch and it is a real achievement to get a place Enjoy the game.

I’ve got a determined group who will give everything to ensure the season goes on as long as we can make it. We’ve got a lot still to give, and while we know it’ll be tough to come through these play-offs we know that we

"YOUR SUPPORT HAS BEEN FANTASTIC, PLEASE HELP US CREATE A POSITIVE AND ENCOURAGING ATMOSPHERE TODAY TO HELP THE PLAYERS PERFORM TO THEIR BEST"

GAVIN BALDWIN GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM. I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME THE OWNERS, SUPPORTERS, PLAYERS AND STAFF OF CHARLTON WHO HAVE TRAVELLED UP FOR TODAY’S GAME. While we head into the play-offs with a sense of pride at having finished in the top six, but with a steely determination that we can achieve so much more. We can take great belief from the way we dug in during some of our final games of the regular season - the battling qualities we showed to win at Bradford and get a point at Oxford, as well as last Saturday’s win over Coventry are exactly what we’ll need in these final games. We will have another good crowd this afternoon, something we have come to expect in recent games. Your support has been fantastic, please help us create a positive and encouraging atmosphere today to help the players perform to their best. Staff here at the Keepmoat Stadium and down at our training ground have worked round the clock to ensure we are ready to go in this play-off game, with our Box Office staff quickly liaising with their counterparts at Charlton Athletics to get pricing agreed and sales systems in place. In this day and age there is a constant

demand for things to be done quicker, but to have tickets for this game on sale a little over 24 hours after the conclusion of the game against Coventry was a real achievement. Although this is the last Rovers game of the season here at the Keepmoat Stadium, the Festival Of Sport is ongoing - which culminates in the first Doncaster Half Marathon which starts and finishes here at the ground. We’ve never seen so much activity going on at the Club Doncaster Sports Village, which is testament to the hard work put in by staff behind the scenes and how Club Doncaster is now really maturing as a group. Enjoy the game.

ISSUE 29 v CHARLTON ATHLETIC

JAMES R E G N I COPP WHEN IT COMES TO A PLAY-OFF CAMPAIGN, JAMES COPPINGER HAS A HISTORY OF MAKING HIS MARK IN A ROVERS SHIRT. 11 years on from his hat-trick against Southend United at the Keepmoat Stadium, the No.26 has another chance to guide his side towards the Sky Bet Championship. He believes the squad will grasp the opportunity of playing under pressure, as home advantage in the first-leg could prove to be key. “Having the first leg at home gives us a great opportunity to set ourselves up leading into the second game,” he says.

DONCASTERROVERSFC.CO.UK

09

“Being at home first can work both ways, I’ve played the reverse where we got a draw away from home and then brought Southend back here and beat them.

“They’ve shown some real consistency which is always the question asked of the younger lads in terms of whether they can perform every week.

“It can work in your favour if you get a good start then it can give you momentum, and we want to continue our good home form.

“It says a lot about the environment that they’re training in, and the job the coaching staff have done with them all.

“We’re treating as we would normally, with the game being on a Sunday it’s given us a bit more time to recover and prepare.

“For me it’s all about using my experience to try and have an impact with the younger players, I want them to come out and put a performance in week in, week out. It’s important that the senior lads do step up to the mark and take responsibility at crucial times of the campaign.”

“This season we’ve had a good cup run which will stand us in good stead, and the young players in our squad have really stepped up. “I think leading into Sunday everything will be positive with the expectation of a big performance at the Keepmoat Stadium.” Coppinger has the second highest amount of assists in Sky Bet League One this season, and has yet again been a standout in the Rovers front three. He has not been alone in his consistency of performance though, and is full of praise for the way some of the younger players have taken responsibility when it counts. “It’s a chance to make a name for yourself which I managed to do all those years ago, and now we have young players looking to do the same,” says Coppinger. “We had so many players earn recognition for their efforts this season, we’ve got a group of players that are hungry to do well. “One of the things that has impressed me with the likes of Mallik, Ben and Herbie is how they’ve handled the pressure all season.

ISSUE 29 v CHARLTON ATHLETIC

Having already secured a new one-year-deal with the club to take him into his 16th campaign with Rovers, Coppinger is excited at the prospect of playing Championship football again next season.

"MANAGERS CHANGE, CHAIRMEN CHANGE, EVEN THE OWNERS CHANGE BUT THE FANS STAY THE SAME AND THROUGHOUT MY FIFTEEN YEARS THEY’VE STUCK BY ME THROUGH GOOD AND BAD"

He says the Rovers fans were a big reason for him agreeing to stay, as his relationship with them continues to blossom. “It’s an easy decision staying for another year. I’ve been here fifteen years and I’ve had such a good time – I’m so pleased with the way my football has gone here with promotions and the cup final,” he says. “I think there’s more to come, not just from me personally, but from Doncaster and from this team. “For me, the fans are one of the biggest factors. Managers change, chairmen change, even the owners change but the fans stay the same and throughout my fifteen years they’ve stuck by me through good and bad. “The support that they’ve shown throughout the last few seasons as I’m getting older is massive for me because it justifies why I’m going out every day, training the way I train and playing the way I do. I’ll be eternally grateful for their support.” Having had big crowds at the Keepmoat Stadium already this season, the Rovers fans will have a big part to play in leading the team to success. They were patient throughout the game against Coventry City on the final day of the regular season, and Coppinger says that was appreciated by the players. “It’s something we’ve experienced as a club before and we want a big crowd for what is a massive occasion for the club,” he says.

"LAST SEASON WAS ONE OF CONSOLIDATION AND NOW TO GET IN THE PLAYOFFS IS A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT SO HOPEFULLY WE CAN FINISH THE JOB" “Our fans are going to play a massive part especially in the first-leg, they have been brilliant all season so hopefully we can finish the job off. “The atmosphere against Coventry was really good and if we can replicate that and put in a performance it could get us off to a solid start. “It was reassuring that the fans stuck with us even when Peterborough scored, it would have been easy to get frustrated but that didn’t happen. “For us as players we want to hear the fans getting behind us because in a game like this we need them all the way through.” With the freedom to go out and play handed down by manager Grant McCann, Coppinger believes Rovers can go out and show how far they have come as a group following relegation to the fourth tier less than three years ago. “I feel like the pressure isn’t really on us, we got in on the final day and didn’t miss out on automatic promotion like a couple of other teams,” he adds. “They will be expected to go through to the final given where they finished in the table, so we don’t mind being underdogs. “It’s amazing how far we’ve come since being relegated a few seasons ago, we lost our way a bit where we weren’t going anywhere. “When we went down we didn’t really have a direction as a club, but since then we’ve been promoted and had a really good few years. “Last season was one of consolidation and now to get in the play-offs is a great achievement so hopefully we can finish the job.”

FOUR TO CHARLTON ATHLETIC

DILLON PHILLIPS TOP STOPPER

01

The Addicks’ youth team product has started to stake a claim in the first team this season, hitting double figures for league appearances for the first time this term. Phillps has also spent time out on loan away from The Valley, playing for Whitehawk and Bishop’s Stortford, before enjoying the 2015/16 season at Cheltenham Town. Phillips would play a key role for the Robins that season as they returned to the EFL at the first attempt, winning the National League title. He signed a new two-year deal with Charlton after his success at Whaddon Road, which was again extended last January for a further year.

BEN REEVES MIDFIELD MAESTRO

12

The Addicks midfielder is a Northern Irish international, making his debut in a Euro 2016 qualifier against Greece in October 2014. After coming up through the ranks at Southampton, Reeves went on to join Milton Keynes in 2013. In his first season at Stadium:MK, he won both the Fans and Players’ Player of the Year, and his second season would be even more successful, helping them to win promotion to the Championship, finishing as runners-up in 2015. Reeves signed a two-year deal at The Valley in the summer of 2017, and he played 29 times last season as the Addicks made it to the League One play-off semi-finals, losing out to Shrewsbury Town.

14

ISSUE 29 v CHARLTON ATHLETIC

O WATCH CHRIS SOLLY DEFENSIVE ROCK

20

The Addicks legend is also a one-club man, having come up through the academy before his senior debut in 2009. Solly was a key figure in the Addicks’ 2011/12 League One title win, going on to win the club’s Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards following their promotion, as well as winning it the senior award again the season after following a solid season in the Championship. Despite Solly entering his 11th season of professional football at The Valley, he has only scored three goals in a Charlton shirt, with the last of those coming this season, bagging a last-minute equaliser away at Luton Town, his first goal since 2012.

LYLE TAYLOR DEADLY STRIKER

09

The Montserrat international signed from cross-London rivals AFC Wimbledon over the summer. Taylor began his career with Millwall, though it would be his drop into non-league with Concord Rangers that would kick-start his career. 34 goals in one season for Concord saw him sign for AFC Bournemouth before a successful season with Falkirk where he would score 24 goals in 34 league games for the Bairns. After time with Sheffield United and Scunthorpe United, he joined Wimbledon in 2015, going on to become a fans’ favourite with the Dons, scoring 23 goals in his first season, including the opening goal in their 2017 League Two play-off victory over Plymouth Argyle at Wembley Stadium. Taylor switched to south-east London to link up with the Addicks, hitting the ground running with eight league goals from his first 15 games and he also bagged a hat-trick against Mansfield Town in the first round of this season’s FA Cup.

DONCASTERROVERSFC.CO.UK

15

THE 2011/12 SEASON SAW THE ADDICKS STORM TO THE LEAGUE ONE TITLE UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF CHRIS POWELL, AND TWO PLAYERS WHO WERE A PART OF THAT SUCCESS ALSO LATER SPENT TIME HERE AT THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM. The first of those is left-back CEDRIC EVINA, who spent three years at The Valley between 2011 and 2014 following his departure from Oldham Athletic. Evina began his career at Premier League giants Arsenal, coming up through the youth ranks in North London and spending 11 years in total with the Gunners. Evina was a part of the young Gunners side that went onto win the FA Youth Cup in 2009, defeating Liverpool 6-2 on aggregate over two legs, before going on to captain the Arsenal youth team the following season. He would then move on to Oldham Athletic, initially on loan in 2010, before joining the Latics on a permanent deal the following year, playing 28 times across both spells at Boundary Park, also winning Oldham’s Young Player of the Year award in 2011. From there, Evina would make his move back to the capital, joining up with Chris Powell’s Addicks upon their return to League One. Though Evina’s appearances during the 2011/12 season were brief, they were still promoted as champions at the end of the campaign, and he featured more regularly in the following couple of seasons in the Championship. After three years at The Valley, Evina would link up with his former Oldham boss Paul Dickov at the Keepmoat Stadium, signing an initial two-year deal with Rovers in 2014, a deal which would be extended even further the following December after some solid performances down the left-hand side. Despite relegation from League One in 2016, Evina was one of a handful of players who remained in South Yorkshire, and he played 16 times in League Two as Rovers achieved promotion at the first time of asking. After finding opportunities limited towards the end of that campaign though, Evina spent the final year of his contract on loan at League Two side Crawley Town before his departure from Doncaster at the end of last season. Evina joined Notts County a couple of months into the 2018/19 season with the Magpies struggling at the foot of the League Two table, making 19 appearances so far as he looks to help the EFL’s oldest club away from the danger zone in the fourth tier.

16

ISSUE 29 v CHARLTON ATHLETIC

Another man who played a brief part in the Addicks’ title-winning season was DANY N’GUESSAN, with the forward making the short trip across London from Millwall on loan to The Valley in 2012. After time with Auxerre and Rangers, as well as a loan spell from the Scottish giants to Boston United, N’Guessan joined up with Lincoln City in 2007, being signed by current Rovers’ Development squad boss John Schofield towards the end of the 2006/07 season. After two years with the Imps, N’Guessan would then move on to join Leicester City, though after much time out away on loan at various clubs, he would make his move to Millwall. He joined up with the Addicks in 2012, playing seven times and scoring four goals in the 2011/12 season whilst at The Valley, before signing a permanent deal at Swindon Town the following year. After spells with Port Vale and Greek side AEL (Larissa), N’Guessan joined up with Evina at the Keepmoat Stadium in 2015 in what was to be a not so memorable stay in South Yorkshire, playing eight times in League One and once in the EFL Trophy, however he was unable to help Rovers in their bid to avoid the drop at the end of the season. N’Guessan would close out his career with Norwegian side IK Start following his departure from the Keepmoat Stadium. Alex Gibbings

MEMORABLE MATCH CHARLTON ATHLETIC

DECEMBER 2, 2018

It is not often this feature looks back at a game from the current season, but December’s 2-0 victory at The Valley set up Rovers for a record-equalling run in the Emirates FA Cup. Rovers had already overcome National League North side Chorley in the first round, albeit after a replay, and were also looking for revenge after a 2-0 League One loss to the Addicks in London the previous month. Grant McCann’s men were in confident mood, with a four-game unbeaten run including a 7-0 victory over Chorley to progress and wins over AFC Wimbledon and Barnsley in the league. There had also been a 1-1 draw at Barnsley which had resulted in their manager Daniel Stendel labelling Rovers the best side the Tykes had faced that season. Rovers welcomed back captain Tommy Rowe, who made his first start since recovering from a hamstring injury, while Matty Blair was also elevated back into the starting XI. Rovers opened the match brightly, with Rowe and Alfie May going close in the opening minutes. Andy Butler headed just over from a corner as the half drew to a close, with Herbie Kane aps0firing a free-kick narrowly over. There were no changes from either side at the break, and again the second period started with both sides attacking from the off. Rowe had an early shot deflected wide, while home goalkeeper Ollie Phillips got down well to stop May's cross which was destined for Butler. Visiting boss McCann threw on Ali Crawford and Mallik Wilks with just under half an hour of normal time remaining. That helped give Rovers an attacking impetus, with Butler heading just over from a corner after 65 minutes. Moments later Rovers had another corner, and this time the ball was in the back of the net.

Butler again won the header, and it ended up in the back of the net after coming off a home player. Rovers had their tails up looking for a decisive second goal, with Wilks doing well to force himself away from a defender before firing wide. Shots from John Marquis and Crawford were held by Phillips, before Rovers doubled their advantage. Again it came from a set-piece, with Danny Andrew whipping a ball into the area which Butler headed back across for Marquis to turn home his 13th of the season. Rovers goalkeeper Ian Lawlor had not been overly tested all match, but he preserved his clean sheet at the death with a superb save from Mark Marshall.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? There was plenty of life left in Rovers’ FA Cup journey after this win, with a trip to Championship side Preston North End in the third round. Deepdale was a happy hunting ground for Rovers, with John Marquis, Tom Anderson and Malllik Wilks netting in a 3-1 win. The fourth round brought a home tie, with League Two Oldham Athletic dispatched 2-1 thanks to Ben Whitman’s double - the second coming from the spot in the final minute. That set up a memorable Keepmoat Stadium clash with Crystal Palace in the fifth round, and although the Premier League side were too good on the day - Jeffrey Schlupp and Max Mayer scoring - Rovers could hold their head up high after matching their best-ever run in the competition.

DONCASTER ROVERS’ FIRST PLAY-OFF SUCCESS:

THE 2002-03 FOOTBALL CONFERENCE PLAY-OFFS WORDS: JOHN COYLE

R

overs have appeared in the League One play-offs before and have a 100% record. In season 2007-08, after finishing third in League One on a dramatic final day, they defeated Southend United over two legs before making their first and only visit to Wembley on 25th May 2008. There they overcame Leeds United thanks to James Hayter’s headed goal and secured their return to English Football’s second tier after an absence of 50 years. Five years earlier they had enjoyed a play-off campaign that was arguably even more dramatic and more significant. This campaign brought to an end Rovers’ five year sojourn in Non-League football and set the platform for the glory of May 2008. In 2002-03 Dave Penney’s team had enjoyed their best Conference campaign to date, finishing third behind runaway leaders Yeovil Town and runners-up Morecambe. It had been clear for a while that Rovers would have to take the difficult route of the play-offs if they wanted to return to the Football League, from which they had been relegated in 1997-98. They would have to get past Chester City, another former Football League club, and their task was made harder when a race meeting across the road from Belle Vue on May Day Bank Holiday meant that Rovers would have to play their home leg first. That fixture took place on 1st May 2003 and was a disappointment for most of the crowd of 6,857. Rovers went behind after 37 minutes when former player Kevin McIntyre lashed in a shot and defeat looked inevitable until the last minute when Tristram Whitman picked up the ball, beat two defenders and swerved a shot into the corner of the net. That equaliser gave Rovers hope that they could win the return leg at Chester. On Monday May 5, a crowd of 5,702 packed into Chester’s Deva Stadium to witness an afternoon of high drama. Chester again drew first blood via Wayne Hatswell after 31 minutes but Paul Barnes, scorer of 25 goals in the regular season, levelled matters just before the hour. There were no further goals in normal time, nor in 30 minutes of breathless extra time,

although just before the end Rovers goalkeeper Andy Warrington pulled off a crucial, and portentous, save to deny Chester substitute Dave Cameron. So to the drama of penalties, and Rovers’ Jamie Paterson had his shot saved before Warrington stopped Daryl Clare’s effort. Gregg Blundell, Jason Blunt, Dave Morley and Tim Ryan scored theirs, as did three Chester players, so it was down to Cameron versus Warrington again, and as before the Rovers stopper came out on top, saving the penalty and sending Rovers to Stoke City’s Britannia Stadium on Saturday 10th May to face Dagenham & Redbridge. Rovers had beaten the sixth-placed Daggers, who had overcome Morecambe over two legs 5-1 at Belle Vue earlier in the campaign and were firm favourites, although that meant nothing in this dramatic, winner-takes-all shoot-out. Rovers lead at the interval via Paul Green’s headed goal on 38 minutes and added a second after 55 minutes when centre-back Morley powered home a header from a corner. But the Daggers were not done and first Mark Stein and then former Rovers loanee Tarkan

Mustafa pulled them level with 12 minutes to go. Rovers required some stout defending to see them through to the final whistle and the drama of extra time. Extra time was then based on the “Golden Goal” rule which meant that any score would end the match in the favour of the scoring team. There was literally no margin for error. Rovers started this period as they had finished normal time, like a punch-drunk boxer on the ropes. But gradually they came back into the game and five minutes into the second period came the breakthrough. Blundell fed Barnes on the left and his low cross was turned home by Francis Tierney. Cue pandemonium in the well-populated Rovers section of the crowd as the realisation set in that Rovers were back in the Football League. So promotion was gained in the most dramatic of circumstances and the rest we know. Rovers stormed to what is now the League Two title the following season, setting up that glorious day at Wembley in May 2008, and ever since May 10 has been celebrated by Rovers fans as “Sir Francis Tierney Day.”

Hello everyone! The sun was in my eyes but yes we made it to the playoffs. Welcome to Charlton Athletic who finished third in the league table and now the season finale continues. I was delighted to see the joy on Finley’s face when he found out he was our match day mascot today. Enjoy your day; you put a smile on my puppy face every time I see you. Thanks to the club for letting me select a mascot and thank you to the players and staff for getting us to where we are. Great season and great support.

Enjoy the game! Donny Dog DONCASTERROVERSFC.CO.UK

DONCASTER ROVERS

COMMERCIAL Hello play-offs! What a season it has been! Grant McCann and his men have truly done us proud this season and we’re delighted to welcome you back to the Keepmoat Stadium today as our journey continues. Our sixth-placed finish, coupled with Charlton Athletic’s spike in form towards the end of the season means that we will face the Londoners in the play-off semi-finals, with a trip to Wembley in store for the victors. The last time we welcomed Charlton to our turf was back in March as we went toe to toe sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw. Whatever happens today, the Keepmoat Stadium is set to be electric as we show our support for the first team squad and staff. We wish a very warm welcome to our match sponsor DC Training & Development Services Ltd. DC Training specialises in delivering training and development programmes including forklift truck, health & safety and customer services. Based in Doncaster, DC Training & Development Services Ltd delivers training solutions locally and across the United Kingdom, making government funded training available to a range of businesses. We hope everyone with DC Training has a fantastic time with us today in the Jibba Jabba Restaurant. There are a range of exciting commercial opportunities available at Club Doncaster, whether you want to advertise your business, become an Official Partner or just to celebrate a special occasion with your loved ones. For more information on any of the packages available, contact the team on 01302 764665 or email commercial@clubdoncaster.co.uk.

SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:

AD-105x148-Football Foundation.indd 1

"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground

• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

Rovers Till We Die Paul Mayfield

VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

FOUNDATION UP

More than 130 refugees and Fit Rovers participants took part in a walk to the Keepmoat Stadium event last Saturday, in recognition of Amnesty International’s Football Welcomes campaign.

Granit Xhaka, Dejan Lovren at Liverpool and Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke, players with a refugee background have been making their mark on the game for decades.

The group, which saw a total of 46 refugees walk to the Keepmoat Stadium, were met by members of the Foundation’s health and wellbeing project, Fit Rovers, before seeing Rovers secure a play-off spot with a 2-0 win over Coventry City.

Backed by the EFL, a number of Premier League clubs, the FA Women’s Super League, the FA Women’s National League and grassroots and non-league teams across the country, Football Welcomes also aims to highlight the important role football clubs can play in welcoming refugees and people seeking asylum into their local communities, and in helping them to settle in to a new country and culture.

Having supported the local refugee group on a number of activities and opportunities throughout the year, staff of the Foundation saw it fitting to invite the refugees to watch Rovers in their final game of the regular season, and to integrate them into the EFL family club of the year, who made them welcome on Saturday evening. Football Welcomes, now in its third year, highlights the role of refugee players in UK football. From a group of children fleeing the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s who went on to become some of the first refugees to play professionally here, to the likes of former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba, ex-Manchester City forward Nadia Nadim, Arsenal’s

ISSUE 29 v CHARLTON ATHLETIC

With this in mind, the Foundation have been breaking down barriers which may prevent asylum seekers and refugees in Doncaster from participating in sport by providing opportunities for weekly football training sessions and the team’s involvement in an evening football league. Naomi Westland, Football Welcomes manager at Amnesty International UK, said: “We are delighted that Doncaster Rovers and Club Doncaster Foundation took part in Football Welcomes.

DATE

“Football clubs are at the heart of their communities and it’s great to see teams across the UK using the international language of football to create connection, respect and friendship across cultures. “With so many people across the globe forced to abandon their homes due to conflict and instability, it’s important that football clubs use their platform to send out a clear message: refugees are welcome here.” The Foundation have also been promoting their wellloved bike library to local refugees. The ability to borrow

and use a bike can open up a city, allow refugees to get to college or work and allow asylum seekers to stay healthy. Rovers joined up with the Foundation and the Viking Supporters Co-operative to organise a football match between supporters, refugees and Fit Rovers vets at the Keepmoat Stadium. This match also launched the Rovers boot drive which has been a joint effort between Fit Rovers, supporters and staff to donate boots to the football team.
