Darren Ferguson Good afternoon and welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium. I would like to welcome manager David Artell, as well as the fans, players staff and directors from Crewe Alexandra.

The backing from our supporters has been brilliant, with 826 making the trip to Barnet last Saturday. You have been brilliant since I first joined the club. We are all in this together, and you are all an important part of Doncaster Rovers.

We have to concentrate and keep challenging ourselves to keep improving, but I cannot ask for any more than the players and staff are giving at the moment. I’d also like to thank the board for backing me again with the permanent acquisition of Ian Lawlor from Manchester City. Their support means we can be very happy with our January transfer business, which leaves us in a strong position to push on into the final months of the season. Enjoy the game.

As a group of players and staff we have to keep our standards up, and the

I was saddened to learn of Graham Taylor’s death last week. He was a good man, a real family man, who was my manager for a short spell at Wolves. He was so methodical and organised and, looking back now, I picked up things from working with him. My condolences go to his family.

Gavin Baldwin Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the supporters, directors players and staff who have made the trip up today and hope they enjoy their visit.

The signings have settled in quickly, though Conor of course is already very familiar with the surroundings. Darren has repeatedly stressed that we are not looking at the league table, and instead focusing on the points target. So while I know supporters will be enjoying being top, I can tell you that everyone is focused on maintaining this consistency

I look forward to talking with fans at our next Meet The Owners event on Monday February 6, when Darren and I will join our board in answering questions from attendees. The evening is free and open to all supporters, but please ensure you get a ticket from our Box Office first. I’d also like to remind everyone that the Dons start their pre-season campaign here at the Keepmoat Stadium tomorrow when they host Sheffield Eagles. Tickets are just £10, but for £20 you can watch all three of the Dons friendlies – with Super League giants Leeds Rhinos and Hull FC visiting over the next two Sundays. Again, just pop down to the Box Office, call them on 01302 762576 or go to tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk. Enjoy the game.

Gavin

07 Chief Executives Comments

We have had a slightly busier transfer window than we expected, with our plans adapting when Marko Marosi’s ankle ligament injury meant he cannot play for three months. As the first-team manager has said, the board have fully backed him to bring in Ian Lawlor, Conor Grant and Alfie May – we have invested in Ian and Alfie, while we agreed a fee for Conor before settling on a loan move.

and the atmosphere down at the Cantley Park training ground is one of real determination.

CLUB DONCASTER FOUNDATION PROUD PARTNERS

GET Doncaster Walking Club Doncaster Foundation have once again partnered with Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council (DMBC) as part of the 2017 “Get Doncaster Walking” programme.

“Get Doncaster Walking is an annual festival that provides free local walks for residents to get more active in their local community, appreciate the outdoors and have some fun and anyone can get involved.”

To kick off the new year residents from across the Borough gathered this morning to join Paratrooper L/Cpl Ben Parkinson MBE in a sponsored walk around Doncaster Lakeside for the second year in a row.

Keen to highlight the benefits of adopting a healthier lifestyle, Nick Gillot, health and wellbeing officer at Club Doncaster Foundation, said: “The walks are great because any age can take part and we hope that by attending such events, people can maintain an active lifestyle through their own accord, becoming fitter and healthier.

The free event provided a fantastic way to stay fit, meet new friends and raise valuable money for the Pilgrim Bandits as well as the chance to attend today’s game against Crewe at a reduced price.

Dean Wiffen, from DMBC, was delighted to stage the walk again. He said: “It’s great to be working in partnership with Club Doncaster Foundation and such a kind gesture of them to provide discounted tickets to the Crewe Alexandra fixture for everybody who takes part. “We’re really pleased to see the community turn out and support Ben leading the first walk of the festival and raise money for Ben’s chosen charity, the Pilgrim Bandits.

“The 1.3 mile walk around the lake is equivalent to around 3,000 steps, which contributes heavily to this daily target.” Pilgrim Bandits, the chosen charity, was established by a small group of special forces veterans in 2007 with the aim of using their unique training and experience to help and inspire wounded soldiers to live life to the full. They wil be staging a bucket collection around the stadium today.

09 Box Office: 01302 762576

Ben walked with the paricipants around the perimeter of the lake before returning to the Keepmoat Stadium to watch the game.

“It is well documented that we should be walking 10,000 steps per day to reduce the affects of sedentary lifestyle including obesity, heart disease and certain types of cancer.

News ROUNDUP Goalkeeper Ian Lawlor swapped Manchester City for Doncaster Rovers because he was impressed by the long-term vision of his new club. The 22-year-old from Dublin has penned a contract to keep him at the Keepmoat Stadium until the summer of 2019, and made a winning debut in last Saturday’s 3-1 success at Barnet.

10

He said: “I’m delighted to be here, I’m looking forward to progressing and getting involved with the lads.

Box Office: 01302 762576

“I spoke with the manager and saw the ambition of the club, obviously we’re on a great run at the moment but to see the future is something I want to be a part of. “The facilities are really good. The stadium is

fantastic for a League Two club, but the project going forward is really special.” Lawlor has completed a permanent move from the Premier League giants, and goes straight into the squad to face Barnet on Saturday. He has first-team experience after loans at the Bees and Bury, and is ready to fight to earn a place in the Rovers team. He added: “It’s nice to have the feeling that they want me to come in on a permanent basis. But there is nothing guaranteed in football, so I’m ready for a battle. I’ll work hard every day and, if selected come the weekend, will give everything I have. “In the short-term I’m hoping to get in and play, but the aim is to get promoted out of this league. I’m here to give as much as I can for this team.”

MIDFIELDER

GRANT Conor

Conor GRANT MIDFIELD DYNAMO Conor Grant is relishing his return to Doncaster Rovers - with the midfielder believing he has unfinished business in South Yorkshire. The 21-year-old made 22 appearances for the club last season before injury cut short his loan from Premier League side Everton. Nine months later, though, he is back and feels like he never left.

12

“It feels great. I’m delighted to be back, playing games and enjoying my football. I am happy the team are in a good position, and want to kick on now,” he says.

Box Office: 01302 762576

“The fans took to me very well, and I felt a good connection, so it’s like I never left really. I settled back in very quickly, it feels like normal service resumed. There are new faces here, but a lot of the same faces – at the training ground with Vicky and Sam in the canteen and Tracy in the kit room. So it is much the same. It’s just nice being back.” Grant may have watched Rovers’ eventual relegation from afar, but the pain was no less than those who remained at the club. Now, though, he believes there is a real opportunity to put things right and get the club back into Sky Bet League One. “The way my loan spell finished, with the injury and the results, wasn’t nice. When we were relegated I was as gutted as everyone, but this is a chance to put it right. “Last year was difficult for the club at the end of the season, but now there is a real positive vibe at the training ground. And results breed the confidence. We are all willing to work

hard for each other, and that is a big thing for this team.

nothing can match the benefits or buzz of playing first-team football.

to support - you can

“There were still positives to take from my time at Ipswich. The downside was not playing the amount of games I wanted to, but that happens in football and you’ve just got to dust yourself down. That’s why I appreciate now that I’m playing,” he says.

“ There are a lot of young lads, but they have quite a bit of experience among themselves, then you’ve got the more experienced lads who keep everyone together. It’s a very good mix and the camaraderie is very good.”

“First-team football is a lot different from reserves, and it’s where I want to be playing. The reserve games are just not for me, there’s little benefit to them. So it’s important for me to be getting games now, which I was I was delighted to come straight in and get two 90 minutes against Stevenage and Portsmouth, then Barnet. Getting the full game is something that hasn’t happened for me this season, and I have been very frustrated by that, so that definitely stands me in good stead and will help me kick on.

A chance to again work with Darren Ferguson was another reason why Grant was happy to drop down to the fourth tier. “ I enjoyed working with the manager before, and he was a massive influence on me coming back. He said how much he really wanted me to come, play games and enjoy my football again. He gives me a lot of confidence and seems to really get the best out of me,” says Grant. “I obviously had to think about dropping to League Two, but the gaffer was really pushing and showed how much he wanted to get me. I loved working with him last time, and now it’s even better that we are top of the league. His level of detail in each session means he gets his point across really well. It’s something I can learn from.” Grant spent time on loan in the Championship with Ipswich at the start of this season, but returned to Everton . He featured for the Toffees’ U23 side, but

“We’re in a great position now, the lads have put us in a brilliant position. It’s a cliché, but we need to take each it game by game, win as many as we can and keep getting points on the board, if we do that then hopefully promotion will come. My aim is to work hard and ensure I stay in the team, because the competition is very high.”

“You can just see the confidence each day, each training session is bang on. Everyone is giving everything to try and get into the team, and that’s my focus – to keep working hard and make sure I stay in the team, because the competition for places is tough.

It has been a whirlwind start for Dave Artell as he was only appointed Alexandra boss 12 days ago. The former centre-back, who played more than 70 games for Crewe from 2010-2012, was promoted from his position as academy operations manager to first-team manager after the departure of Steve Davis. Artell, who has played for Rotherham United, Northampton Town and Port Vale has plenty of Football League experience under his belt, which has served him well over his lengthy playing career. He was called up to represent Gibraltar in 2014 at the age of 33, while playing for Welsh side Bala Town, and earned seven caps. In the summer of 2010 he graduated from the University of Chester with a degree in forensic biology.

02 | OLIVER TURTON

DEFENSIVE ROCK Turton has taken a similar path to Ben Garratt, as he has also come through the youth ranks at Gresty road. The 24-year-old graduated from the academy in 2011 after spending nine years in the setup. He was subsequently sent out on loan to Northern Premier League Division One South side Market Drayton Town, along with former team-mate Jason Oswell.

He scored his first goal for the Railwaymen in a 1-1 with Oldham Athletic in 2013.

One of England’s most experienced forwards, Ryan Lowe has made more than 650 appearances for 10 different clubs. He began his career with Burscough in 1999 before joining Shrewsbury Town in 2000. He made more than 170 appearances in a five-year spell with the Shrews, which included helping them back to the Football League after suffering relegation the season before. After playing for Chester City, Crewe Alexandra and Stockport County, he moved onto Bury in 2009. Lowe won the Player of the Month award four times at League Two level and once at League One level during his two-year stint with the Shakers. He went on to play for Bury again in 2014, after featuring for as Milton Keynes Dons, Tranmere Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday. He returned to Crewe Alexandra on loan last season before making a permanent return to the Railwaymen.

Whitehurst joined Doncaster Rovers at the beginning of the 1991/92 season and it would turn out to be his only year at Belle Vue, which included a loan stint for Crewe Alexandra aduring the same campaign. He joined Australian side St George FC for a season before returning to England to play non-league football.

LEGEND, WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Irishman Eddie McMorran signed for Rovers in 1953 under the leadership of Peter Doherty. Fellow Irishman Doherty acquired the services of McMorran for a club record fee of ÂŁ8,000 from rivals Barnsley, he went onto to spend four seasons, turning out 139 times and finding the net on 38 occasions. He ended his professional footballing career with Crewe Alexandra, spending a singular season with the Railwaymen.

Club NEWS James Coppinger paid tribute to Rovers’ fans after the victory over Barnet. The 3-1 success at The Hive – where Coppinger netted either side of John Marquis’ strike – was witnessed by 826 travelling fans. The Rovers captain said: “They were superb, and they have been all season – home and away.

Rovers had to come from behind to claim the three points, and Coppinger praised the character of his team-mates to quickly bounce back. He added: “This team doesn’t know when it’s beat, and credit to the lads with the way they go about things on and off the pitch. “It’s momentum. When you are top of the league and playing with confidence, and a lot of quality, nobody loses their heads if we go

Hello everyone, Welcome to our game against Crewe Alexandra. I have to rewind back to the Portsmouth game first, though, it was an amazing night and we were on the TV too. I have been watching the game over and over again! I spent a lot of the second half sat in the stand behind the goal and I had lots of fun – thank you to those kids who looked after me. It is fantastic that so many family of generations come to the games, when we played Stevenage our mascot Calum Young was part of four generations! Let’s make lots of noise today.

Club News Rovers youngsters Reece Fielding and Will Longbottom signed their first professional contracts with the club earlier this month.

Forward Longbottom, who has been involved in a number of match day squads this season, was delighted to commit his future to the club.

The pair, who have both been involved with the first team already this season, have agreed two-and-a-half year deals which will see them stay at the Keepmoat Stadium until the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

He said: “I’m really pleased, the manager here isn’t afraid to put young players in the team so I knew if I kept working hard then I had a chance of doing well.”

The 18-year-old made his debut against Mansfield Town in the Checkatrade Trophy win earlier on this season, and says there is much more to come from him in red and white. He said: “I’ve got to work as hard as I can in training, do everything right and prove to the manager that he was right in handing me my contract.”

Having played both as a striker and in the attacking midfield role, Longbottom scored his first senior goal for the club in October in a 2-2 Checkatrade Trophy draw with Derby County at the Keepmoat Stadium. The teenager added: “It was an unbelievable feeling, not only to play in front of a big crowd for the first time but also to score. All my family were there so I was happy to score for them as well.”

Defender Fielding believes he can really learn from the more senior players at the club. He said: “I’m over the moon, it’s all I’ve wanted since I started playing football. “All the lads are great, Andy Butler particularly for me as a defender has really helped me out this year so I can’t ask for any more than that.”

Good afternoon. We welcome David Artell, his staff, players and fans who will all be looking to nick something here today. In the last two meetings between both clubs, the Railwaymen have come away with a full three points but, with Rovers continuing to use their home ground as their fortress, Crewe will be up against an in-form side who have yet to be beaten at home this season in the league.

All fixtures Youth Alliance North-East unless stated

Rovers Under 18s have begun 2017 with two tough away fixtures against Mansfield and Notts County – who currently occupy the top two positions in the league. Rovers produced a very good first half performance against Mansfield, which saw them lead 1-0 at half-time. Mansfield hit back to level through an own goal and posed more of a threat in the second half, although they didn’t create any chances of note. Rovers finished the game very strongly and had a number of chances to deservedly win the game, but failed to capitalise in their chances. The game ended in a 1-1 draw. Rovers fell to a 2-1 defeat at Notts, with the winner coming via a direct free-kick two minutes from time. As per the weekend before, Rovers dominated long periods of the first half with Jacob Fletcher and Cody Prior dominating the midfield exchanges. The second half was a scrappier affair which saw Notts County take the lead before Matty Overton showed good ability and composure to equalise before the late winner for the hosts. Academy manager Kieran Scarff said: “Over the course of the two games there has been a much to be pleased about in possession, especially in both first halves. We have changed our formation to support the learning opportunities for the players and this will continue to develop. We are speaking to, and working with the players, to find ways of coping with changes in formation and style by the opposition. “This has been the case in both games in the new year. The positives is that the changes made by the opposition has been a direct reflection on our dominance of possession. As a group we now need to be able to maintain that level of control as teams look to utilise different ways of playing against us. Whil3 the results at Notts County was disappointing, there continues to be some very good individual performances. The development of these players into our first team remains the priority at al times.”

ROVERS XI | Leverton, Walker, Barker, Dunnet, Amos, Fletcher, James, Prior, Overton, Henderson, Morris. BENCH | Gooden, Scattergood, Bingley

Kieran SCARFF Last week our lead sports scientist, James Walsh, organised the start of a psychology and nutrition programme aimed at developing the understanding of both players and parents in these vital areas. All players from in the age groups from U9 through to U16 attended workshops delivered by Tom Mitchell and Ed Smith.

Their support and work is something we are very appreciative of.

These are areas that will certainly enhance the potential in our young players. It is very important that we involve the parents of the players in this type of work as this then supports the consistency of the message given to the players, something that is vital in ensuring effective learning is taking place. Good luck to the gaffer, the staff and players this afternoon.

45 Box Office: 01302 762576

Tom and Ed work with our first team squad in these areas and are working closely with us to develop an age specific programme that supports the development of all our players.

This is just the start of the programme, and I look forward to this evolving over the coming months.

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 14 - By John Coyle

50 Box Office: 01302 762576

Having seen Rovers suffer defeats in successive games in January 1947, supporters could be forgiven for wondering if they were heading for another disappointment. Only the champions would be promoted from Division Three North at the end of the season. Rovers retained a three point lead over Rotherham United, but in 1937-38 and 1938-39, the last full seasons before World War Two, Rovers had finished runners-up, a position that offered no tangible reward. On Wednesday January 22 the team travelled to Crewe for a fixture rescheduled due to Rovers’ progress in the FA Cup. Ernie Swallow was nursing a heavy cold, so Harry Tomlinson deputised. Line up: Archie Ferguson; Harry Tomlinson Bill Corbett; Cecil Stirland, Sid Bycroft, Bob McFarlane; Jackie Kirkaldie, Jackie Thompson, Clarrie Jordan, Paul Todd, Ralph Maddison.

Jackie KIRKALDIE

Rovers found Alexandra lively opponents and Tomlinson had his hands full dealing with Kelly, the home outside-right. Gradually they settled and after Kirkaldie’s shot had rattled the crossbar, Rovers took a

28th-minute lead. Jordan took a pass from McFarlane, beat his man and then played a superb long ball to Todd whose fierce shot beat Price. Rovers doubled their advantage Paul after 53 minutes, when TODD Maddison found Todd who slotted the ball home as the defence appealed vainly for offside. Jordan’s returns had been thin of late, but he made amends five minutes from time, some clever play enabling him to make the final score 3-0. With Rotherham not playing, Rovers held a five point advantage over their local rivals. Snow fell in Doncaster on Saturday 25th January 1947, but it was not so great as to put the afternoon’s entertainment in jeopardy and Rovers and Carlisle United took the field in front of a crowd of 14,051. With Swallow and Wooldridge both still absent, Rovers fielded an unchanged side. The crowd had to wait only ten minutes for the first goal. Maddison sent over a cross from the left and the ball was helped into the path of Kirkaldie who smashed home from an acute angle. After half an hour Todd did good work on the left and passed to Thompson who

Eleven minutes into the second half, Rovers opened up a two goal lead. Maddison sent a cross-field pass to Kirkaldie who beat two men and shot past Jones. On the hour, Maddison

secured victory with the goal of the match. He picked up the ball on the left inside his own half, cut infield and after beating three defenders with a mazy dribble he made it 5-2 with a neat strike. On 71 minutes Jordan grabbed his second of the afternoon, seizing on a loose ball after good work by Kirkaldie (6-2). In the last seven minutes Carlisle caved in. Todd, Thompson and then finally Jordan, who completed his hat-trick, scored to secure a 9-2 victory. This represented Rovers’ biggest ever League victory, beating the 8-1 win over Coventry City in January 1926. To complete a perfect day, news came through that Rotherham had lost at Gateshead. Rovers now led the table by seven points and the disappointments of preceding weeks were forgotten.

51 Box Office: 01302 762576

beat Jones with a fierce shot. Then it was 3-0, when Kirkaldie got away on the right and his low shot appeared to be heading for goal until Jordan turned it in. Within five minutes, though, Carlisle had it back to 3-2. Centre-forward Connor got the better of Bycroft and freed Carlisle’s 24 year old player-manager Ivor Broadis, who scored. Then Connor again broke free and found Moir who further reduced the arrears. Rovers’ dominance was not reflected in the interval lead of an odd goal in five.

BELLES

Emma Coates secured her second signing of the winter by bringing Mayumi Pacheco to the club on a permanent basis

“Emma has helped me grow as a player on and off the pitch and I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue to do that.”

The left-back became Coates’ first signing in June when she signed on-loan from Liverpool and became an instant hit with her team-mates and fans.

Coates was delighted to get the left-back’s signature, saying: “She’s a great signing for us. It’s a big statement of intent.

And now, the 18-year-old is back having impressed throughout her loan spell - scoring once, in the home defeat to Sunderland, in 12 appearances.

52

PACHECO Returns

Box Office: 01302 762576

Her performances led her to pick up the sponsors’ Player of the Season award at the Belles’ end of season awards.

“She’s a young player with lots of potential and when she came in on loan she made an instant impact on the team.” Pacheco will also be studying with the Belles’ main sponsors at BPP University which is something that vice chancellor Carl Lygo is delighted with.

Pacheco said: “In my loan spell I was playing with confidence, which has come from me but also from Emma and the girls here too.

He said: “BPP University is delighted to support the most historic women’s football team, Doncaster Belles and offer players and staff the opportunity to study while progressing their careers in Football.

“I’ve now been exposed to situations I’ve never experienced before on the pitch which has helped me develop so hopefully I can now push on.

“Maz is an outstanding young talent, winner of the sponsors’ player of the year in 2016 and clearly had a massive impact when on loan from Liverpool.”

Rovers Family Doncaster Rovers Supporters Club Good afternoon and welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium for today’s game against Crewe Alexandra, best wishes to all their fans who have made the journey here today, hope they enjoy the experience, but let us continue with our unbeaten home run. We have had some memorable games here against the Alex, last season we were losing going into stoppage time, but scored two late goals to get the three points, then there was the northern final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, where it looked like we were going to be denied going to the Millennium Stadium, but the Jason Price show saw us win through in the dying moments. Crewe are not having a good time of it this season, both on and off the pitch, and have just replaced their Manager.

54 Box Office: 01302 762576

Our last home game against Portsmouth y was a cracker, the only downside was the injury to Marko and we all wish him a speedy recovery. We are a secure, not-for-profit, community minded and charity supporting organisation run by a democratically elected board. As an organisation we are registered with, and regulated by, the Financial Conduct Authority. Since our inception we have strived to help ensure that our club is being run from top to bottom by people who have the best interests of Doncaster Rovers at their heart. They also understand the relevance and importance of a well-run supporters trust. The VSC continues to have a good relationship with the club and meets on a monthly basis with the CEO.
