Darren Ferguson Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium for the visit of Hartlepool United. I’d like to welcome Pools manager Craig Hignett, the fans, players, staff and directors who have travelled down. I’m sure Rob Jones will get a warm welcome back, too. They will have plenty of confidence after their 2-0 win over Cheltenham Town last weekend, so we know we will have to work hard to get something out of the game.

Liam Mandeville did really well for us at Exeter City last weekend. Players like Liam, Alfie Beestin and Will

We can’t play brilliantly every time, but we dug out a result at Exeter. That is key, as over the course of the season every team challenging for where we want to be will have to dig out results like this. That is a real positive, and having 332 travelling fans was a great effort so it was pleasing to be able to send them home happy. I was pleased to finish top of our group in the Checkatrade Trophy after our draw with Port Vale, which guaranteed us a home tie in the second round. We defended well and there was a definite improvement from the previous game at Oldham Athetic. Enjoy the game.

November is an important month for us. With the Stevenage game being moved we only have one more match after this, and we know positive results today and against Leyton Orient next weekend would keep us on track.

Longbottom have all impressed when getting a chance in the first-team this season.

Gavin Baldwin Good afternoon, and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the directors, fans, players and staff of Hartlepool United and wish them all a safe journey home afterwards.

I know some fans will have been inconvenienced by the switch of the Stevenage game from this Tuesday to the first Saturday in December. I’d like to remind anyone who had already purchased train tickets for Tuesday to contact our Box Office so we can do something to make life a little easier for you. Finally, I’d like to wish snooker player Chris Keogan, part of Club Doncaster, all the best ahead of the UK Championship which gets underway in the coming days – he is in action against Ali Carter on Thursday. Enjoy the game.

Gavin

07 Chief Executives Comments

We’ve had a very busy few weeks at the stadium since my previous programme notes last month. It is my first opportunity to thank my staff for their effort in helping stage the England Women’s international against France as well as our annual Big Bang fireworks extravaganza. With the Challenge Cup semi-final held here this summer, and an England U20 international not so long ago, it shows some of the opportunities open to us thanks to our great facilities and staff here. It’s hard to believe we’ve now been at this ground almost 10 years – watch this space for details of how we will mark this occasion in January.

Last weekend’s win at Exeter City was an important one to help maintain our momentum, allowing us to close the gap to second-placed Carlisle United and keep in touch with leaders Plymouth Argyle. With two home games in a row, we now have a great chance to build.

The 23-year-old prop plundered eight tries – the most of any forward – as the club reached the end of season play-offs before bowing out to Barrow Raiders. “I had a good year, playing in the majority of the games last year, and I just love the place,” Connor said after signing his new deal despite interest from Super League clubs. “I love Doncaster and all the lads here, the coaching’s good. We were a bit unfortunate not to get to the final last year and I feel I can offer a lot more in another year at Donny – I think we can get to a final or even promotion. “I love going and coaching in schools, I also coach the Club Doncaster Sports College rugby team at the stadium and it all ties in. I love rugby so why not do it in the day as well as in the evenings when I’m training through the week with Doncaster?” Club Doncaster Sports College teamed up with the Dons to offer students aged 16-19 the chance to study, train and play as part of the Dons’ Academy. With a pass rate of 100 per cent across the board last year, Club Doncaster Sports College have set the standards, completely surpassing the national pass rate. In addition, eight per cent of BTEC L3 Extended Diploma leavers last year were in the top 1.7 per cent in the country, which they hope to emulate with this year’s students. News ROUNDUP

Liam Mandeville is full of confidence after he inspired Rovers to victory at Exeter City last weekend.

Manager Darren Ferguson was full of praise for Mandeville, and the teenager reckons he has plenty to thank for boss for.

Rovers were trailing 1-0 when the young forward came off the bench at St James Park, but three minutes after his introduction he had headed home the equalising goal.

He said: “He just told me to try and change the game, and I think I did that. It wasn’t going to plan for whatever reason, we’ll obviously look at that on Monday, but thankfully we have got away with a win. Sometimes you just have to grind outa result – it’s a long way to come so three point is key.

He followed that up with key interventions to twice set up John Marquis for the strikes which secured the three points.

Box Office: 01302 762576

The young forward said: “It’s one of those games that happens every so often, though hopefully I can make them happen more. “It was a great ball from Copps for my goal. I’ve worked on heading it down, I didn’t manage that, but still it has gone into the top corner. “I tried to bring energy. I thought their centre-halves didn’t look as athletic as our team, so I tried to run at them as I was full of energy.”

“He is a great coach who has been really good for my progress, he is really improving my knowledge of the game. That’s the major improvement really, I am learning about the game every day. “It is all about energy, playing a high tempo. My running style looks like I’m not trying sometimes but I am. It’s about the higher tempo and pressing, the defensive side of my game has improved a lot. “The manager has brought me self-belief and confidence, I am going on the pitch with no fear at the moment.”

Johnny M ON YOUR MARQS RAW greets John Marquis prior to the chilly evening of Checkatrade Trophy football. There is an honesty and openness to him and, with it, energy. He nurses a pair of woollen gloves for he will be sat in the stand tonight kicking every ball – to keep warm more than anything! He is almost insulted by the mere notion of playing in mitts. “I will never be wearing a pair of gloves, I’ll never wear an Under Armour (base layer) let alone a pair of gloves,” he exclaims. “I’ll be honest, it gets cold up here. That London bubble that I’ve lived in with all the pollution keeps us warmer down there and it has got a bit cold up north but no, you won’t see

me wearing a pair of gloves unless I’m going in goal!

Box Office: 01302 762576

Beware the wounded animal though; the thirty-two-year-old wants Rovers to bite back – or at least bounce back – after last week’s humbling at the hands of his former employers Blackpool at Bloomfield Road. “It’s coming to December and January when the pitches go and we’re going to have to learn how to win games. It’ll be harder to play football so we’re going to have to learn to adapt and to still win games which I’m sure we can.” Marquis, formerly of Millwall, has always had to adapt. Hi’s a footballing nomad, a loveable rogue, a working class hero. He’s not the first Marquis to play for Doncaster, though. Paul, a defender, played for Rovers 29 times in the mid-nineties. “I didn’t know that – I’ve never heard of him. We’re no relation. As far as I know I have no football background in my family. I’ve got some market traders in my family. We’ve got a few South London market traders but no footballers! It’d be nice, if he wants to come to a game, I’ll meet him,” says John. “I signed when I was 14 and you’re brought up in a way where the club itself is a fantastic club, don’t get me wrong. 01 | TREVOR CARSON

Goalkeeper Trevor Carson joined Pools in the summer of 2015 following his departure from Cheltenham Town. The Northern Ireland international had been the Robins’ Player of the Year during 2014/15 but even his heroic performances could not save the club from relegation.

14

Carson originally moved to England to join Sunderland at the age of 16 and he spent six years at the Stadium of Light before moving on to Bury in 2012, starring for the Shakers and also excelling during a loan spell at Portsmouth.

Box Office: 01302 762576

He began to show exactly why he is so highly-regarded and a string of incredible performances ensured he was named as Pools’ Fans and Players’ Player of the Year in his first season at The Vic. The keeper further delighted supporters at the end of last term when he quickly agreed terms on a new long-term deal, pledging his future to Hartlepool.

Experienced midfielder Nicky Featherstone arrived as then Hartlepool boss Paul Murray’s first signing in October 2014, initially signing a short-term deal with the club.

1 3

Comfortable and composed in possession, Featherstone produced some wonderful performances during the 2015/16 run-in, which helped earn him a new contract at Victoria Park. Having started his career with Hull City, he moved on to Hereford United in 2011 on a permanent deal after impressing during a loan spell with the Bulls. After making almost 60 appearances for the Edgar Street outfit, Featherstone returned to the Football League with Walsall where he spent two years. In 2015/16 he played 52 games in all competitions – with Jake Carroll the only man in the squad to complete more minutes in the campaign than the dependable midfielder.

MIDFIELD MAESTRO

04 | NICKY FEATHERSTONE

Former Barnsley midfielder Hignett was appointed Manager at Victoria Park in February 2016 following the departure of Ronnie Moore. A talented attacker during his playing days, it was back in October 1988 when Hignett first burst on the scene at Crewe. He quickly earned a move to Premier League Middlesbrough in 1992 and he enjoyed six years on Teesside including two promotions, an FA Cup final and the League Cup final during an incredible 1996/97 campaign under Bryan Robson. His career also took him to Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City, Darlington. After a spell as assistant manager with Hartlepool before Aitor Karanka took him to Middlesbrough in a similar capacity. He left the Riverside in December 2014 but retained a burning desire to become a manager and Pools were delighted to give him that opportunity in February.

22 | ARISTOTE NSIALA

DEFENSIVE ROCK Towering defender Aristote Nsiala arrived at Victoria Park in June 2016 after turning down the offer of a new deal with League Two new boys Grimsby Town. The 6ft 4ins centre-back was one of the stars of The Mariners 2015/16 campaign as they secured a return to the EFL for the first time in six years thanks to a play-off final win at Wembley. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he moved to England in 2002 when he was just ten-years-old and he went on to Youth Team football for Everton. A loan spell at Accrington Stanley turned permanent in the summer of 2012.

2 4

Prolific front man joined Pools during the summer of 2016 after turning down the offer of a new deal from League Two new boys Grimsby Town. The Irishman scored an astonishing 37 goals in all competitions for the Mariners last term, becoming a huge fans’ favourite as he helped fire them to promotion from the National League. Amond began his career back in his homeland with Shamrock Rovers where he spent three years before moving on to Sligo Rovers where he continued to find the net regularly. In 2013, Morecambe swooped to secure his services and he netted 19 goals in 50 appearances for the Shrimps, operating mainly on the right side of midfield. He joined Grimsby at the start of the 2015/16 campaign and went on to enjoy a stunning year at Blundell Park, winning a whole host of Player of the Year awards.

HE PLAYED FOR BOTH

Billy PAYNTER Billy Paynter will always have a special place in Rovers’ fans hearts as he was the player that provided James Coppinger with the pass that sealed the dramatic win over Brentford on that crucial day and the rest they say is history. Paynter, a jovial Scouser with a wicked sense of humour, came through Port Vale’s youth set up and was rewarded with his first team start in 2000 at the age of 16 years and 294 days. In November 2002 he scored his first senior goal at the age of 18, breaking another record that went back into

16

the late 1970s.

Box Office: 01302 762576

He prospered at Vale and, after auspicious stints at Southend and Hull City, did well for Swindon. That prompted Leeds United to take him to Elland Road yet it was at the Keepmoat that he rediscovered his Midas touch as he plundered 14 goals in 52 appearances for Rovers; some of them crucial! He has been a mainstay at Victoria Park since joining in the summer of 2015 and, with 18 goals in 50 appearances for Pools, continues to be a goal threat.

Graeme JONES

LEGEND

Former striker Graeme Jones began his career close to his birth place Gateshead. The 6ft 1in powerhouse plied his trade with North Shields and Bridlington Town before making the move south to Doncaster Rovers in 1993. During his time with Rovers, Jones, managed to make 105 appearances while finding the 30 times before heading to Wigan Athletic in 1996 – it was with the Latics where he forged a crucial relationship with one of the three amigos, Roberto Martinez. The forward would eventually go on to play for; Bury, Southend United and Scottish side St Johnstone before hanging up his boots in 2006. Since retiring, Jones has been appointed assistant manager at Hamilton Academical, before linking up with the Spaniard at Swansea City, Wigan, Everton and now the Belgian national side who also employ Thierry Henry as part of the backroom staff!

Welcome to our game against Hartlepool United. I am looking forward to today’s fixture as I will hopefully catch up with my friend H’Angus. Some of my highlights lately have been my amazing penalty saves at the England v France women’s International game here at the Keepmoat Stadium, my Big Day Out to Yorkshire Wildlife Park, getting dressed up for our Halloween fixture and of course the Christmas light switch on in town. Is it too early to count down to Christmas? I look forward to being Santa Paws again! Don’t forget the next edition of Donny Kicks magazine is out and don’t worry if you did not get the first edition we still have copies available.

Club NEWS Doncaster Rovers will today welcome the Royal British Legion to the Keepmoat Stadium to help mark the Centenary of the Battle of the Somme as part of the EFL’s Remembrance commemorations.

22

Rovers players, staff and fans took part in a minute’s silence prior to Saturday’s game at Exeter City, but will again pay their respects this weekend mark the Centenary of the Battle of the Somme which ended 100 years earlier on 18 November 1916.

Box Office: 01302 762576

Rovers will pay their respects with a pre-match ceremony, with a wreath laid on the pitch as part before the traditional playing of the Last Post by a bugler and a minute’s silence. Similar activities have been carried out at all 72 EFL clubs to remember and honour all of those that have fallen in battle. Club Doncaster chief executive Gavin Baldwin said: “As a club we feel it appropriate to pay our respects, and it will have more poignancy with it being the Centenary of the ending of the Battle of the Somme – a terrifying battle which claimed the lives of more than one million people.

“We know many people from the area made the ultimate sacrifice during the two world wars, so it is right to take a few moments to think of them.” EFL communications director Mark Rowan said: “Every single one of our clubs lost players, staff and supporters, it is only right and appropriate that we pay a tribute. Football is all about community and the EFL’s clubs, fans and staff will all stand in silence together to pay our respects this November.”

Fought over 141 days between 1 July and 18 November 1916, the Battle of the Somme was one of the defining battles of the First World War. With more than 400,000 British casualties and more than one million men of all nationalities killed, the Somme remains one of the most brutal individual battles ever fought. One hundred years on, the Battle of the Somme is being remembered across the country as part of the official First World War Centenary commemorations of which the EFL is proud to play its part by marking the centenary of the Battle of the Somme’s end on 19 November.

Club NEWS WELDRICKS HELP ROVERS FIGHT FLU Leading regional pharmacy chain Weldricks have made sure that Doncaster Rovers’ football players have the best protection against flu this winter following a vaccination session at the Keepmoat Stadium.

38 Box Office: 01302 762576

Weldricks pharmacist Charlotte Wigglesworth gave 52 players and staff a flu jab. Richard Wells, superintendent pharmacist for Weldricks, said: “As professional sportsmen the team rely on keeping as fit and healthy as possible to ensure maximum performance on the pitch. Having a flu jab will give each of the players a fighting chance to stay flu-free this season. “Flu is highly infectious and still kills thousands of people every year. Symptoms can come on very quickly and include high fever, aching muscles, shivers and extreme lethargy. “But it’s not just elite footballers who should consider a flu jab. Based on clinical judgment, we can administer the flu vaccine to people aged 18 and over in vulnerable ‘at risk’ groups. These include those with chronic respiratory illnesses, chronic heart, liver, kidney or neurological disease,

diabetes, low immunity, pregnant women and carers. In these cases, the jab is free of charge on the NHS, and can be carried out at 36 of our local pharmacies in South Yorkshire often without an appointment.” Rovers manager Darren Ferguson said: “I’d like to thank Weldricks for helping protect our players and staff. The players work hard to maintain the fitness needed to be a professional footballer and these jabs reduce the chances of us losing anyone for a key game due to flu.” Richard added: “Many of our branches are open six days a week and have extended opening hours so people can pop in after work or at weekends making it really convenient to get a jab. Even if you’re not in the ‘at risk ‘target group and you’re fit and healthy we can provide the vaccination for £11.98. “Contrary to popular belief, the flu jab doesn’t give you the flu but it does take between seven and 14 days for a person to become immunised. The vaccination itself doesn’t hurt and is delivered in the upper arm. Some people experience a dull ache in their arm and a slight temperature for a few days but that soon wears off and is preferable to contracting the virus!” For more information on Weldricks’ flu vaccination service, pop into your local branch or visit www.weldricks.co.uk

The Rovers goalscorers were Jacob Fletcher, Joe Dunnett and Matt Overton. Kane Bingley was also back in the starting XI following a knee injury sustained during the pre-season Gothia Cup tournament in Sweden. It was a pleasing response to the questions that had been asked by the Academy coaches earlier in the week with Rovers youngsters providing the energy, aggression and playing identity that is based around the expected standards set within the club. The youth team were back in action before today’s match, with Chesterfield visiting, and will host Rotherham United on Saturday December 3 (KO 11am) – fans are welcome to come down to Cantley Park to watch.

ROVERS XI | Leverton, Walker, Bingley, Dunnet, Amos, Fletcher, James, Prior, Overton, Morris, Scattergood. BENCH | Townrow, Ogley, Barnett, Horton.

Kieran SCARFF As mentioned in the match report from our recent Hartlepool game, it was great to see Kane Bingley back in the starting XI for the first time since suffering a knee injury in Sweden during the Gothia Cup in July. Kane’s injury and his subsequent journey back to fitness have highlighted the exceptional support that is provided by our medical and sports science staff.

The role of our support staff is vital in the development of all our young players and it is very important that they receive the recognition their expertise and dedication deserves. Good luck to the gaffer, the staff and players this afternoon. Kieran

45 Box Office: 01302 762576

Kane has undoubtedly had to show a great deal of determination and patience during this time. In addition he has received excellent guidance and support from the likes of Alex Dalton, Paul Tether, Claire Swindell and James Walsh.

The medical staff provide a high level of diagnosis and injury treatment whilst the role of James Walsh, in his role as Head of Academy Sports Science, is vital in terms of graduating his rehabilitation from the early stages to, in Kane’s case, providing a mini pre-season to ensure there is a greatly reduced risk of a relapse or compensatory injuries.

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 9 - By John Coyle

50 Box Office: 01302 762576

The last day of November 1946 allowed Doncaster Rovers a break from League football. It was the first round proper of the FA Cup, and Rovers were playing host to Accrington Stanley at Belle Vue. The Lancashire side had been here a few weeks earlier, and had returned home smarting from a 5-0 defeat. Their team had undergone a number of changes since their earlier visit, and they faced the same Rovers XI that had hit five goals against Hartlepools United a week earlier: Archie Ferguson; Ernie Swallow, Jim Wooldridge; Cecil Stirland, Sid Bycroft, Bob McFarlane; Jackie Kirkaldie, Jackie Thompson, Clarrie Jordan, Paul Todd, Ralph Maddison.

Jackie KIRKALDIE

If any of the home fans who formed the majority of the crowd of 15,223 were expecting Rovers to deal out another trouncing, they were to be disappointed.

After 31 minutes, Ferguson was harassed by Conroy into taking more steps with the ball than was then permitted, and from the resulting indirect free-kick, Conroy himself put the visitors ahead. To make matters worse Thompson suffered a muscle strain and was forced to switch places with Kirkaldie on the right flank. Then six minutes into the second half Keeley put Stanley 2-0 ahead. With 20 minutes left, Todd’s pass found the limping Thompson whose shot through a crowd of players found the net. Rovers piled on the pressure and were finally rewarded with three minutes to go, skipper Todd levelling the scores with a crisp drive. Rovers almost snatched an undeserved winner as in the dying moments Jordan for once escaped the attentions of his marker Briggs and forced a fine save from the visiting goalkeeper, Hayes. On the Monday Rovers went into the draw and were handed an away tie against Oldham Athletic in the second round. They still had unfinished business, though, and on Wednesday December 4 they travelled to Peel Park, Accrington for the replay. The game kicked off at 2pm and ,in a hint of what lay ahead weather wise, the pitch was

covered by snow and puddles of water. Leslie Owens, who had scored for the reserves at the weekend, returned to the team in place of the injured Thompson.

51

for Rovers. Jordan made it 4-0 with a fine display of wing play by completing his hat-trick to secure a 5-0 win for the visitors. Despite the afternoon kick-off, 6,163 had watched the game, testimony both to the attractions of post-war football and the visit of the Division Three (North) leaders. Oldham awaited in Round Two, of course, but Rovers now faced a brief return to League football in the shape of a tricky-looking visit to Lincoln City on the coming Saturday.

Box Office: 01302 762576

Despite the dreadful conditions, Rovers produced some sparking football. Jordan forced Webster into last-ditch clearance and the busy Owens was causing problems for the home defence. Rovers took the lead after 18 minutes when Jordan’s pass caught Hayes out of position and Kirkaldie was able to shoot into an open goal. Jordan almost doubled the lead when he forced Cornwell to clear off the line and after 38 minutes Kirkaldie made it 2-0 with a splendid goal. He picked up the ball on the right flank, dribbled past Kearney and Webster and from just inside the area he fired in a low shot which gave Hayes no chance. Two minutes before the interval Todd all but settled the tie when his lob was misjudged by Hayes. Even at 3-0 up there was no letting up

Doncaster

BELLES

Belles’ development team manager Zoey Shaw believes she has inherited a team capable of having a great season while playing an attractive style of football. Shaw took over the side at the start of the season and has already seen enough to convince her that her team could be very special. She said: “I have inherited a really good group of players and their ability individually and as a team shows me that they have the potential to do great things.

52 Box Office: 01302 762576

“The aim for us is to keep developing the players and getting the team to adopt a playing style where we play with minimal touches in the right places and show creativeness in the final third.” The opening game of the campaign resulted in victory as goals from Monique Watson

DEVELOPMENT: Shaw believes her side can compete and Rebecca Rayner secured a 2-0 win over Durham. Since that result, there have been a few set-backs to the team but manager Shaw hasn’t let that dent any of the early optimism gained at the start of the season. She added: “We started the season with a good solid performance against Durham and from there we have had a few set-backs with injuries, illnesses and players moving across to the first team, but having said that I think the team is put together really well considering the amount of changes we have had to make on a weekly basis. “Every training session is a new challenge and an opportunity to work on things that maybe didn't work well on Sunday or we just need that little bit more time to break things down.”

Viking Supporters Co-Operative Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. Recently the Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the Football League and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the Supporters Trust at that club. The EFL issued a new league rule informing clubs of the minimum requirement for meeting with supporters and the kind of topics that should be included. That new rule came into force for the 2016/17 season. As you may be aware the club hold two ‘Meet The Owners’ events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have initiated a ‘Supporters Board’ which meets on a monthly basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. It is early days for this new Board, but so far the signs are very encouraging in that nothing has been held back and the trust between club and supporters is evident. As the meetings progress we hope to be able to announce the progress that has been made. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the new requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. IRWT
