Darren Ferguson Copps was the centre of attention last week, and 500 senior appearances for one club is a remarkable feat. I have been fortunate to work with some great players as a manager, and he is right up there. He still trains hard every day and is a great example to our younger players.
Confidence is high at Rovers at the moment. You could see that at Morecambe last week when we put in our best performance of the season. The second-half was very good from us, with some great goals capped off by a great strike from Copps.
He was the first to insist the team take credit for last week’s performance, and he is right. We played really well to win comfortably against a really good side. I wasn’t surprised at the display, and have been waiting for that to happen. We were ruthless, and that was the difference from the previous week at Crewe when we played well but came away with nothing.
It was a big day for him, with 500 games for the club. His team-mates got him a cake the night before and wore special shirts in the warm-up. We knew how important it was to him, it shows how respected he is at the club, and we backed that up with a performance. We had great support at the Globe Arena, with 653 of you there, and I am sure Copps will get another great reception today.
We have improved in pretty much every match this season, and that is all I can ask as a manager. I’m delighted to be in the position we’re in given the injuries we’ve had, the players and coaching staff have worked hard to get this far and we’ll continue to do so as we strive to build on this start. Enjoy the game.

Gavin Baldwin Welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium for the visit of Newport County AFC. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the visiting directors, staff and players who have made the long trip over from Wales.
Copps has absolutely hated being the centre of attention, but it is well deserved. With the way he has been performing this season, it would be no surprise if we are back here in 100 games time to celebrate 600 appearances. From my viewpoint, it was fantastic to hear him talk about how happy he still feels at the club and how staying with us rather than pursue a move away has helped prolong his career. Don’t forget to look up to the big screen immediately after today’s match for a special video tribute to him.
Our kit suppliers FBT did a great job in turning the kit around so quickly, even adding a little flourish to Copps’ special shirt with a golden “500” embroidered on, and our sponsors Stoneacre generously donated their advertising space to the British Heart Foundation. The response to the shirt was fantastic so we hope to raise a significant amount for the BHF. Enjoy this afternoon’s game.
Gavin
07 Chief Executives Comments
Today we pay tribute to James Coppinger, who has spent 13 years at the club as a player and last weekend clocked up his 500th senior appearance in style. It was an honour to be at the Globe Arena last week as he showed his class – the moment when he scored the final goal in the 5-1 victory will last long in the memories of the 653 travelling fans who were there.
The shirt Copps was wearing at Morecambe will no doubt be the main attraction as we auction off the unique British Heart Foundation kits we wore in the match. We felt the kit was an innovative way to deal with the problem posed by both our home and away kits clashing with Morecambe’s home shirts. A lot of hard work went on behind the scenes to turn the dream into a reality.

James COPPINGER SHY AND RETIRING? James Coppinger is neither. His quiet demeanour is modest and being lofted on to his team-mate’s shoulders in recent celebration, while appreciated, was not his idea of fun. As for retiring, that appears a notional idea. Why even contemplate it when he’s arguably in the form of his 35-year-old life?
“I’m really enjoying my football at the minute and that played a big part in why I’ve picked up the award I think,” he said upon taking the League Two Player of the Month trophy for August.
“I think the way I’m playing in terms of position, it’s the first time I’ve played consistently behind the front two for four or

“It’s a good position for me. As you get older you want to focus on creating and scoring goals and helping the team attacking-wise. I don’t really have to worry about defending. It’s good that the manager has put me in that position and it’s worked.”
Coppinger is only five years younger than the August Manager of the Month, Jim Bentley of Morecambe, whose team the Rovers captain helped demolish last week on his 500th appearance for the club.
“Player of the Month was massive for me but it proves that we’re doing well as a team and it could have been three or four of us, its important that we keep going and don’t get carried away,” he said.
“It was obviously a great day, a proud moment for me. A lot had been said this with it being my 500th game, the fans travelled down and I couldn’t have written it.
“The lads play a big part: we’ve got a great group and a good mixture. In the team hotel, they’d got me a cake with ‘500’ on and they warmed up in shirts with my name on the back. It’s not me, it’s a bit embarrassing, but I think it’s a great testament to how close we are as a group.

Born in Croydon, 26-year-old Labadie Joss made his start in football at the West Bromwich Albion academy, where he progressed to sign professional terms with the Midlands Club in 2008. After loan spells at Shrewsbury, Cheltenham and Tranmere, Joss signed permanently for Tranmere in May 2010. During his two-year stay at Tranmere Joss made over sixty appearances at Prenton Park, before joining Notts County whom he scored for against Rovers as the South Yorkshire side were gunning for automatic promotion in 2013. He spent the past two seasons at Dagenham & Redbridge where he captained the East-London outfit. In June Labadie signed a two-year deal with the Exiles.

35-year-old Feeney is still cutting his teeth in management terms and is one of the youngest managers in the Football League. He reached the peak of his powers as a player representing Northern Ireland no less than 46 times, scoring five goals. Having played primarily for Bournemouth, Luton, Stockport and Cardiff, he started in the dug out with Linfield in his native Belfast before moving back across the Irish Sea to South Wales.

DEFENSIVE ROCK Bennett made 141 appearances over seven season for Exeter City, his local side, having come through the ranks at St James’ Park. Experienced Parkin is now with his 14th different professional club and still going at the age of 34 and another stint in the Football League – having had a run at Forest Green Rovers in non league where he scored for fun. The big front man made a handful of appearances for his hometown club Barnsley as a youngster but it wasn’t until spells at Macclesfield and Hull City where he really came to prominence as ‘The Beast.’ Indifferent spells at Stoke and Cardiff sandwiched a healthy goal return with Preston. While with the Bluebirds, Rovers took the veteran but he couldn’t find the net in five loan games. Parkin has over 170 goals from over 550 games.

LEGEND
This section of the programme is usually reserved for those who have moved on from Doncaster Rovers or, unfortunately, passed away. Coppinger is still here and still going strong. The stats don’t do the man justice. The second longest serving player in the Sky Bet EFL is at this football club and winning awards and accolades on a regular basis, playing alongside players half his age! Even if he wasn’t to be a record breaker, just watching Coppinger at full tilt has been a delight – and a constant – throughout his time with the club. One day he will leave, but it’s not yet so we’ll continue to enjoy and admire.

Rovers 1 Burnley 0 REPORT
James Morris scored the only goal as Rovers bounced back from the disappointing 4-2 loss to York City. Morris struck just after half-time with a smart finish after being played in down the side of a centre-half. He resisted the temptation to cut back on his right foot, and instead went outside his man before clipping the ball over the keeper. It was a game of few chances at Cantley Park, but was a competitive encounter played at a real tempo. Rovers’ Academy head Kieran Scarff said: “It was a very positive performance and reaction from the players. At times there was good control of possession, and out of possession the energy levels and aggression was good. This highlights the conditioning programme put in place by James Walsh.

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 4 - By John Coyle
50 Box Office: 01302 762576
There was mixed news of the four injured players when the team to play away to Carlisle United was chosen. Inside-forwards Jackie Thompson and Leslie Owens were still indisposed, but skipper Paul Todd and half-back Cecil Stirland were available again. On Saturday September 21 1946 the following took the field at Brunton Park: Archie Ferguson; Ernie Swallow, Jim Wooldridge; Cecil Stirland, Sid Bycroft, Bob McFarlane; Bert Tindill, Frank Mitcheson, Clarrie Jordan, Paul Todd, Ralph Maddison.
Aged 24 in 1946, he had signed for Rovers just before the war after being spotted playing for his local junior team in South Kirkby. He had started out as a full-back, but after being tried out in the centre-forward role he responded by scoring 117 goals in his final season at junior level. Signing on part-time professional forms with Rovers allowed him to combine football with working as a coal miner at South Kirkby Colliery and he continued in his dual role until 1948.
Ralph MADDISON
Clarrie JORDAN
Midway through the first half Rovers fell behind when the home inside-right Kirkpatrick opened the scoring for the hosts, but they were soon level through Jordan and then Tindill’s low drive put Rovers ahead at the break. On 65 minutes left-winger Maddison increased the visitors’ lead and although centre-forward Moir’s headed goal after 80 minutes made for a nervous finish, Rovers held on to maintain their lead at the top of Division Three (North). Scorer of Rovers’ first goal at Carlisle, Clarrie Jordan was a centre-forward at the zenith of his powers.
Bert TINDILL
As a miner, Jordan was in a “reserved occupation” during the war and hence he was not called up for military service.
This afforded him the opportunity to play for Rovers and other teams including Leeds United, Birmingham City and Derby County, as a guest, during the conflict, which all contributed to his football experience.
The recent wet weather had given way to a short-lived heatwave, and 12,873 spectators sweltered in shirt-sleeves as temperatures climbed into the seventies The game was an entertaining one and the visitors from Lancashire gave as well as they got until Jordan broke the deadlock on the half-hour. Leading 1-0 at the break, Jordan doubled Rovers’ lead on 51 minutes when his shot was deflected past goalkeeper hacking by the Accrington centre-half Briggs. Eight minutes later Jordan put the result beyond doubt, clinching his first Football League hat-trick. Todd, on 75 minutes

51 and Tindill, two minutes from the end, completed a 5-0 rout, Rovers’ biggest win of the season to date. With September’s action completed, it was a good time to take stock of the League Table. Rovers led the way, with 14 points from eight games, ahead of Chester who had 14 points from nine but an inferior Goal Average. Wrexham came third with 12 points from nine games, then Rotherham United (11 from seven games) and Hartlepools United (11 from eight). October would feature four games, all on Saturdays, with the shortening days ruling out much mid-week football for the time being. How would that League table look in a month’s time?
Box Office: 01302 762576
The nature of his work meant that he was physically fit and strong as an ox, the ideal mixture for a centre forward in a game that was more demanding of physical strength than modern football. Jordan was part of an unchanged team that faced Accrington Stanley at Belle Vue a week after the Carlisle trip.

BELLES
Doncaster Rovers Belles' youngster Rebecca Rayner says she is quickly settling into the first team as she continues her progression from the Development squad. The 16-year-old playmaker came off the bench in both of the Belles’ last two FA WSL 1 games and has really enjoyed her first team experiences. Speaking after September's showdown with Sunderland, Rayner said: “I am really enjoying playing with the first team and I feel like I’ve settled into the squad well because the players are welcoming and it has felt like I am joining a family.

“There’s a really good atmosphere and, although we didn’t win [against Sunderland], it feels like we have got the attitude to keep pushing on and getting some victories.”

Rising star Rayner is ready to step up for Belles appearances in the Belles last couple of fixtures - away at Liverpool and home to Sunderland. On the pitch, Rebecca impressed with her willingness to get on the ball and confidence in possession and said that was something that she focused on every time she played. “When I go onto the pitch I try and put all my effort into the game and I always want the ball, to be confident on it and to be involved in attacks," she added. “I want to keep making it into the first team set up and keep making a good impact off the bench to help the team out as much as I can for the rest of the season.” Rebecca and the Belles are next in FA WSL 1 action on September 24 when Reading FC Women visit the Keepmoat Stadium (kick-off 6.30pm).

Rovers Family All the latest news from our supporters groups Doncaster Rovers Supporters Club It has been a few years since we last met Newport County AFC, as a supporters club, we used to play friendly games of football against their fans, I also remember going to their old Somerton Park ground in the 70’s on a Friday night, to be greeted with a fire engine trying to pump water off the pitch, the game being called off.
54 Box Office: 01302 762576
Today is a big day for James Coppinger, on behalf of the Supporters Club, we would like to congratulate him on his 500th appearance, a milestone which I think will never be surpassed, he has been a credit to the club and himself and his family, we all remember the hat-trick against Southend, he has won the player of the season on numerous occasions, and has been a good friend to the Supporters Club. Personally, my highlight was going on the Inca Trek to Peru, with James, Mark Wilson, Jimmy O Connor, Steve Utley, Brian Butcher, Dave Plant, Liam Scully, Ross Burbeary and Badge, an experience I will never forget, it typified what Copps is about: a team player. Let’s hope he can play on for much longer. Tomorrow the Supporters Club are having a trip down the River Don, from Sprotborough Lock to Doncaster from 2pm-5pm , tickets are priced at £10 include pie and peas, call Paul on 07961727769, tickets still available. It’s the Retford Branch AGM this Thursday at Retford United’s Cannon Park ground on Leverton Road (DN22 6QF). All fans are welcome to attend,
members or not. Darren Ferguson and Gavin Baldwin will be in attendance, and a free buffet is included. Viking Supporters Co-Operative The word “legend” tends to get handed out in football all too readily, but in James Coppinger’s case, Doncaster Rovers fans can be sure they apply it accurately to a man who richly deserves the status. Should we be surprised that Copps reached the incredible milestone of 500 Rovers appearances last weekend at Morecambe and cementing himself at the top of the all-time club appearances leader board? Absolutely not! I remember having a conversation about Copps and his consistency with a friend on the way back from Wembley, having just seen the Rovers beat Leeds and secure promotion to the Championship. We decided that his style of play meant he could probably be just as effective until he was about 40 years old, injuries (touch wood) dependant. That conversation was more than eight years ago and he’s proving the assessment correct. Copps’ game has never really been about beating a man for pace, so he needn’t worry about his “legs going”. His game is about being clever, using skill, timing and the odd trick here and there to create a yard of space and deliver a killer ball or bang one into the corner of the net. He’s been a talisman upon which much of the club’s success has been founded, and he continues to perform. When he plays well, we play well, which underlines his importance to the team. And what’s more, he’s a VSC member too – so he’s as much a fan of the club as all of us. James Coppinger: Rovers Legend. Here’s to the next 100, James! Rob Clark, VSC Chair
From Your SLO previous pages, please keep an eye on the official website and on social media for ticket price information for this and the trip to Portsmouth which follows..
Thank you I would like to thank all the Rovers supporters who made the recent trips to Crewe and Morecambe over the past two weeks ¬– last Saturday’s trip to the Globe Arena was particularly memorable!. I hope you all enjoyed the trips and had a safe journey.
Contact Details As always, if you have any questions then please contact me on the usual SLO social media outlets, @SLO_DRFC on twitter, DRFC SLO on Facebook or supporterliaison@doncasterroversfc.co.uk. Rovers Condolences Rovers would like to express our condolences to the families of Derek Blackman and Mel Curry, lifelong fans who both recently lost their battles against cancer. Mel was only diagnosed with lung cancer a month ago and passed away early this week. Illness meant Mel had been unable to attend games this season, but followed results from his sickbed and had previously travelled to home and away games from his home in Stockton Derek (pictured), a well-known Rovers fan based in the United States, died peacefully in his sleep recently after going into hospital in August. Derek may be more familiar to many fans as “Newyankee” from his regular posts on the Viking Supporters Co-Operative forum. Derek leaves behind a widow, Donna, and a step-family.
