A word from the manager

Good afternoon, and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium as Rochdale return to South Yorkshire for the second time in little over a week. I’d like to welcome the owners, supporters, players and staff who have travelled over. Keith Hill is a good manager and Rochdale will come here as a well-organised side – they have given us three tough games already this season, and I am sure today will be no exception. But our confidence is high at the moment after some really good results. We showed good character at Peterborough on Monday in what I felt was a good performance – we did well to come back to earn a point, but I thought we played well enough that we could easily have won.
approach throughout a busy schedule – they have looked after themselves with the right food, rest and preparation. That character is really important at this time of the year, the players and staff deserve a lot of credit for their approach. Those results give us some real momentum for the second half of the season and we start 2018 in a good position. We have improved as the season has progressed, and we’ll all keep working hard to continue that. The key for us now is consistency – if we keep working hard and putting in the performances we will pick up points. Enjoy the game.
Ten points from 12 games over the Christmas period is a great return, and I have to pay tribute to my players for their

We had 364 Rochdale fans here for the league fixture, and hopefully a good number of them will be back today after enjoying their experience of Rovers (apart from the result, of course!).

Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium as we again welcome Rochdale. I’d like to welcome the owners, supporters, players and staff of the visitors as they make their second journey to us in eight days.
you. Deep!)
As a club we pride ourselves on being welcoming away fans, and want to ensure we provide an experience that stands out so that if you only get to go to a couple of away games a season, we are one. It’s particularly important over the festive period when games come thick and fast, and can be a real logistical and financial strain for everyone. The backing of more than 500 Rovers fans at the ABAX Stadium on New Year’s Day was incredible, and there can be few better feelings in football than your side scoring a match-changing goal late in time added on. There is a real sense of optimism around the Keepmoat Stadium as we head into 2018, and 10 points from four games sets Rovers up nicely for the second half of the campaign.
Thank you to everyone who took part in the minute’s applause remembering those who we lost from the Rovers family in 2017. It was very touching to hear the Black Bank singing Dick Watson’s name – I am sure his family take great pride from the recognition of his contribution to the club. With Doncaster Rugby League preparing for their first pre-season games – tickets are available at tickets.clubdoncaster. co.uk - let’s hope 2018 is memorable for everyone at Club Doncaster. We are delighted with the response to the Challenge 1000 promotion for Dons season tickets, which ended up with 607 sold. We will have 200 more junior season ticket holders than last season, which following on from the increase of junior Season Membership for Rovers fans this season mean Club Doncaster are well placed to cater for sports fans of the future from all across the region. Enjoy the game.
The players and coaching staff are confident and determined to make this a good year, starting today in the FA Cup.

NIALL MASON Niall Mason was seen as Mr Versatile during his first season at the Keepmoat Stadium, playing in a number of different positions as Rovers were promoted back to Sky Bet League One. But upon the club’s return to the third tier, the 20-year-old has found himself used more often than not in the right-back role, something he feels suits his way of playing.
here, I’ve played in other positions, but I think I’ve found a good one now. “The key for me is to make it difficult for the manager to move me out of position, whether that’s out of the team completely or just putting me in another position on the pitch.”
Mason missed the South Yorkshire derby against Rotherham United in November with a “I feel comfortable at right hamstring injury and had back and I think I can kick to wait a handful of games “In the past few weeks on there as it’s a position I we’ve looked somewhere to regain his place in enjoy, playing with the rest near the standards we got the starting XI. of the pitch in front of me to last season, playing quick suits my style,” he says. He reckons that was a and pressing football” prime example of just how “I can try and pick my much strength in depth passes and get forward manager Darren Ferguson when I need to, but then on the other side has at his disposal. of that I can defend when needed which is one of the strongest parts of my game. “Picking up the injury came at a bad time for me as the team went on a bit of a good “Full back is probably where the manager run after that, so it made it difficult for me has used me the most since I’ve been to get back in,” says Mason.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS “I would have loved to play in the game against Rotherham as that’s what you grow up wanting to do, play in derbies and big games, it was painful to watch and I was gutted I couldn’t be involved. “In the past few weeks we’ve looked somewhere near the standards we got to last season, we’ve been playing quick football and pressing really well. “The late goals have really cost us this season, we’ve been guilty of lapses in concentration in games where we’ve either been leading or level going into injury time. It is part and parcel of football that sometimes things will go against you but the key is to respond well and to keep going until things turn in your favour. ” Mason turned his loan spell from Sky Bet Championship side Aston Villa into a permanent move in the summer, and believes the move was a natural one for him. “The transition in the summer was as smooth as it could have been, I felt like a permanent player last year and really settled within the group,” he says. “I said when I signed that the manager and his coaching staff know my personality and what type of player I am, so I would like to think they trust me to do a good job. “The main reason why I wanted to stay here was because it felt like home, I knew that the manager wanted me here so that made me want to stay.”

With Rovers now coming out of a busy festive fixture schedule, Mason is currently enjoying his second experience of the Christmas schedule and is no stranger to the sacrifices which footballers have to make.
easy to get caught up in football a little bit when it’s what you do every day.
“Last year was my first real taste of the festive period, I had a bit of it at Aston Villa but was mainly used as a substitute there so playing a lot of games in my first season here was new to me,” he says.
“It’s a good time to look back on things and I think this year has been a big one for me, we’ve had the promotion and I signed permanently so I’ve learned a lot from it.”
“It’s a really busy time and it’s tough to manage life away from football as the family are having a normal Christmas and we have to make sacrifices. “It’s not really an issue for footballers as we know growing up that that’s just the way it is with our profession, we take it for what it is. “We got our schedule at the start of the month so we knew we’d be training on Christmas Eve and then have Christmas Day off ahead of the game on Boxing Day.” With a strict diet meaning the Rovers players had to be careful what they had to eat on Christmas Day, Mason still made the most of spending some quality time with his family. “The family came to my house for Christmas as it’s a long way for me to travel to see them with the fixture list the way it is,” he says. “It’s really important at this time of year to relax when you’re with family as it’s
“At my age I’m playing a lot of games and there’s a lot of pressure so it’s nice at times to get away from it and relax.
To continue the interview with the right-back, we asked him a few quickfire questions about more quirky topics.

With so many games in such a short space of time, Mason believes the run of wins Rovers put together could prove a real springboard for 2018. “We had a couple of away trips at Christmas time last year but it’s worked out well for us that we’ve had two home games after a tough trip to Bristol this time around,” he adds. “Having so many games in a short space of time is a great chance to put a run of results together, there isn’t much between the play-offs and the bottom half of the table. “That’s why it’s key for us, the message within the group has been too keep on plugging away as we knew that two or three wins could get us right back up to where we want to be. “We’ve kept the belief even through the bad run because our performances were good, and, after winning a few, I think people have seen how far we’ve come and turned things around – it gives us a lot of confidence for future games.”

Tommy Rowe was pleased with his teammates’ persistence as they grabbed a point at the death at Peterborough United on New Year’s Day.
four and Ian Lawlor have been fantastic, everyone right through the team are straight on the front foot and that’s the best way to defend.”
Alfie May revealed his strike against Rochdale last Friday night came after a deliberate attempt to think less in front of goal.
Ben Whiteman’s 93rd-minute equaliser ensured that Rovers maintained their festive unbeaten run, and Rowe is happy their hard work is paying off.
Rovers have picked up 10 points from a possible 12 over the festive period, and Rowe now believes that the young side now has the ability to kick on as the season progresses.
May’s effort was the striker’s first since September following a spell out with injury, and he was relieved when the chance came to get back on the scoresheet.
“This group of players has the potential to go very far, you can’t get away from the fact that this is such a young team, the growth over the last five games just shows where we want to go,” he added.
“It’s nice to come back after injury and get the goal, it wasn’t nice being out and trying to get your shirt back is difficult, but I could’ve had a couple on Boxing Day, so I said to myself just to not think about it too much,” he said.
“It was a difficult game, it was one that we could enjoy in terms of that we’d built this run with nine points from the last three games and we knew that we could come here with plenty of confidence,” he said. “I think our hard work over this last week or so has really paid off, we had a few chances near the end where we could’ve scored more and got the win on another day, but it’s a great point. The clean sheets have been brilliant and the back

“This is the grind part of the season where the games come thick and fast, this is a young group with a strong mentality, we talk quite often and reflect on games and where we can do better.”
“It’s a great three points and we were on top all game, we wanted a third to settle it, but we’ve kept another clean sheet too, with three clean sheets and
three wins so far, the dressing room is buzzing. Most games we like to press and work hard, and when you see your teammates working hard you want to push that little bit more, everyone looks at that and John Marquis has run around for 96 minutes – his work rate is unbelievable.” Rovers head into 2018 full of confidence, and May is happy to embrace “the grind” from this part of the campaign.. “This is the hardest part of the season because there are so many games in such a short space of time, but it has been great training though because everyone has a smile on their face, the gaffer is happy and there is such a togetherness in the squad,” he added. “You have to dig deep and grind out results, the confidence is really high .”

AWAY TEAM ROCHDALE
TOP STOPPER
DEFENSIVE ROCK
The keeper is in his eighth season with Rochdale, joining the club after two loan spells before his permanent move in 2012.
The full-back has made more than 150 appearances for Dale, following his move from Liverpool as a youngster.
Lillis began his career with Scunthorpe United, helping them to reach the Championship twice in three seasons.
Rafferty came through the ranks at Liverpool, playing internationally with the Irish under-18 and under-19 sides, before joining Rochdale in 2012 where he has remained ever since.
He had loan spells away from Glanford Park at Notts County and Grimsby Town, before two temporary switches to Dale between 2009 and 2011. Like he did with Scunthorpe, Lillis helped Dale to two promotions, this time both up to League One, and he has established himself as their No.1, being a virtual ever present over the past few seasons.
He was a key member of the side that helped Dale to promotion from League Two in 2014.

The forward is in his sixth season with Rochdale, and was named as captain at the beginning of the season.
He has made more than 100 appearances for Dale, scoring his first goal for the club against Coventry City, a strike which saw him claim the Goal of the Season award at the end of the 2014/15 season.
He began his career with Norwich City, spending five years at Carrow Road, with a brief stint on loan at Rotherham United in 2007. Spells at Northampton Town and Luton Town followed, before a move to Turkey in 2009, where he spent six months with Ankaragücü.
This summer saw Camps sign a new three-year deal which sees him staying with his only club until at least 2020. Camps also has youth international caps with Northern Ireland’s under-18 and under-21 sides.

Henderson returned to England with Colchester United. A move to Rochdale in 2013 saw him help his current side to reach League One in his second season at the club, before scoring 22 goals in the third tier the season after, and he has helped Dale to establish themselves at this level.

Both Reece Fielding and Tyler Walker have spent the first half of the season on loan at Biggleswade Town in the Evo-Stick Southern Premier Division. Louis Jones has had been on loan at Gainsborough Trinity, Tadcaster Albion and recently at Sheffield FC and Will Longbottom has spent time on loan at Kidderminster. Spending these periods on loan in senior men’s football are, we believe, vitally important in the development of our young players. The experiences allow them to develop personal skills and qualities while being out of the comfort zone within their usual environment. In addition, the playing opportunities greatly increase.
These opportunities are invaluable for the players and their development. Without the support of these clubs these opportunities wouldn’t be possible and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for the support they have provided in assisting with the development of our young players. I look forward to working with them and other clubs during the rest of the season and beyond. Good luck to the gaffer, the staff and the players.
For example, Reece and Tyler have played more than 30 games this season. Without the opportunity provided at Biggleswade this number of games would have been nearer to 10. This is the same for Louis and Will. We have also provided similar opportunities, during shorter spells, for some of our second year youth team players. Jacob Fletcher and Keegan Townrow have spent time at Spalding United, Matty Overton has been at Frickley and Kane Bingley is currently gaining experience of senior men’s football with Ossett Town.

WE MUST STOP MEETING LIKE THIS! Today’s FA Cup tie against Rochdale will be the fourth meeting between the sides this season, as we have already met twice in the League and once in the Checkatrade Trophy.
1-1, then poor light in the third replay at Hillsborough ended the game at 90 minutes with the scores 0-0. That was on Monday January 14 1955 and 24 hours later the teams reconvened at The Hawthorns, home of West Bromwich Albion. This time Rovers ran out 3-1 winners, the goals coming from Alick Jeffrey (2) and Geoff Walker. That sent Rovers into the fifth round, where they lost 2-1 at Birmingham City.
Should this game go to a replay these cross-Pennine rivals will have met on five occasions this season. If so, it would be only the eighth occasion Rovers have met a fellow Football League side five times or more in one season.
Other seasons in which Rovers have met a rival five times have been as follows:
The largest number of meetings between Rovers and a fellow League club (six) came in 1984-85. Rovers had been promoted to Division Three as runners-up to York City the season before and the two teams were drawn against each other in the League Cup. After a 0-0 draw at Belle Vue in the first leg, Rovers were hammered 5-0 at Bootham Crescent in the second.
with a 3-0 home win via goals from David Harle, Ray Deans and Glynn Snodin.
The first League meeting, at York, was little better as Rovers lost 3-1. Manager Billy Bremner and his players must have given a weary sigh when they were drawn against York again in the relatively new Football League Trophy.
The first time Rovers met League rivals five times in a season came in 1931-32. Rovers and Barrow were both members of Division Three North and the sides met in the League on November 7 1931 at Belle Vue, Barrow winning 1-0.
Played over two legs in those days, Rovers Three weeks later they locked horns again managed a 0-0 home draw but lost again, this time in the First Round of the the away leg 2-0. FA Cup, and the outcome was a thrilling 3-3 draw. The replay, at Barrow’s Holker The sixth and final meeting of the sides Street, finished 1-1 after extra-time and was in April 1985 in the League and a second replay was held at Manchester Rovers gained a measure of revenge City’s Maine Road a few days later.
22
Rovers won 1-0 with a penalty by Joe Bowman and went on to be vanquished 5-0 at Brighton in round two. The Cup win was Rovers’ only success over Barrow in that season, as they lost the away League match 3-2. In FA Cup ties they say you only usually get one chance to beat a team from a higher division. In early 1955 Second Division Rovers overcame First Division Aston Villa at the fifth time of asking. After a 0-0 draw at Belle Vue and a 2-2 at Villa Park in the first replay, both teams went on the road. A second replay at Maine Road ended
1981-82: Chesterfield. League Group Cup (home, won 2-0), League Cup (home, drew 0-0, away drew 1-1. Rovers won on away goals), League (away, lost 1-3, home drew 0-0). 1985-86: Notts County. League Cup (away, lost 0-1, home won 2-1. Rovers lost on away goals). League (away, drew 1-1, home, won 2-1). League Trophy (away, lost 0-1). 1991-92: Burnley. League (home, lost 1-4, away lost 1-2). FA Cup (away, drew 1-1, home lost 1-3), League Trophy (away, lost 0-2). 2007-08: Oldham Athletic League Trophy (home, won 3-0), FA Cup (away, drew 2-2, home, lost 1-2), League (away, drew 1-1, home drew 1-1). So, 10 years on, might Rovers again meet a Lancashire team five times in a season? This afternoon’s game will decide. John Coyle

Happy new year! What a Christmas it has been for Rovers, with 10 points from a possible 12 over an extremely busy festive period is something that we can all feel extremely happy about. Moving up to 11th place in such a short space of time shows what a tight league this is, with only a few more points to go that will see us pushing for those all important promotion places.

NEWS Rovers’ fans can enjoy a free tea or coffee at the Thorntons Café when they visit Lakeside Village until January 15 thanks to a special deal with the club. The stores at Lakeside Village are all currently in sale mode which means that extra discounts are available on their already fantastic value goods. Following a hectic Christmas period, which included a visit from the famous Coca-Cola Truck, the centre is now busy with sales shoppers who are keen to bag a bargain. The new year marks a new alliance with the coming together of Club Doncaster and Visit Doncaster in a partnership that will help both achieve their aims of putting the town on the map. Off the field of play, Club Doncaster’s vision is to help instil civic pride and passion in the town and this is something Visit Doncaster believes can be furthered by this new partnership.
attractions such as the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Sport related tourism is very important to us and when you consider the many thousands of visitors that come to the town to see the races and the combined sporting fixtures of Rovers, Belles and the Dons then it’s easy to see why this partnership is so important to us when telling the Doncaster story.”
Visit Doncaster’s tourism development officer Richard Young said: “The team at Visit Doncaster works year round to promote the town, whether that’s to local residents or visitors from farther afield and we feel this partnership will help us to get our messages to a new audience.
Andrew Whitham, head of commercial affairs at Club Doncaster, said: “Doncaster is a great place to be, with fantastic attractions that welcome residents and visitors alike. We are proud to be partnered with Visit Doncaster and to work together to make sure as many people as possible know what the borough has to offer.”
“Doncaster really has a lot to attract visitors into the borough, whether that’s our historical buildings and great heritage sites to more traditional tourism type
The partnership will also give fans the chance to purchase home tickets from the town’s Tourist Information Office in Priory Place.

Our free to play crazy golf is still up and running and we have both indoor soft play and outdoor play areas to help to keep the kids entertained during shopping trips. “Visitors can enjoy our free parking, while shopping at the centre, and make the most of even more great discounts in all of our stores.”
John Magee, centre manager for Lakeside Village said: “We are pleased to be able To print off the voucher for the free drink to offer Doncaster Rovers fans a free tea head to doncasterroversfc.co.uk.

Thank you to everyone who submitted a name of someone from the Rovers family who we lost in 2017 to commemorate prior to the game against Rochdale. It is the second time we have invited supporters to put forward names of people so we can celebrate their lives at the end of a calendar year – though the vagaries of the fixture list meant we actually did it twice in 2017 (before the first and last home games of the year). We came up with this solution as a club when faced with requests from grieving supporters after losing loved ones. It was not practical to hold a minute’s silence before a game every time a supporter passed on, but we wanted to find a way to pay our respects to fans and former players. We hope this solution, which we will now run into a third year, is an acceptable way to pay tribute. I have seen a couple of comments from fans on social media who were kicking
36
themselves at not putting forward someone who would have been suitable, so to make it easier we will invite nominations all year round rather than only asking as we reach December. We will add a page to the Rovers website with the full details. We have recently been able to add Andy Williams to our matchday media team as an expert co-commentator for Rovers homes games. Unfortunately he is only available to us because he required surgery on a foot problem, but drafting in players is a way we are trying to enhance the iFollow Rovers service. Monthly passes cost just £4.49 and allow you to listen to every firstteam game as well as watch back a full recording of the match from the following day – subscribe on our website. Viking Supporters Co-Operative Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. Recently the Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust.
discuss a very broad range of topics. It is early days for this new Board, but so far the signs are very encouraging in that nothing has been held back and the trust between club and supporters is evident. As the meetings progress we hope to be able to announce the progress that has been made. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the new requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. IRWT Martin O’Hara
The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the Football League and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. The EFL issued a new league rule informing clubs of the minimum requirement for meeting with supporters and the kind of topics that should be included. That new rule came into force for the 2016/17 season. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have initiated a Supporters Board which meets on a monthly basis during the season to

CLUB DONCASTER The Dons’ Challenge 1000 campaign finished on December 25 with a total of 366 adults, and 241 U16 season tickets being sold. Challenge 1000 was launched on Wednesday October 18 with season tickets capped at just £60 for adults and kids going free at the Keepmoat Stadium in 2018. Head of group marketing & communications at Club Doncaster, Shaun Lockwood said: “We’ve had a great response to the campaign, adult season tickets have increased by 99 per cent compared to 2017 and child season ticket numbers have increased by more than 200 year on year. “These numbers provide us with a great platform to start growing the Dons
46
DONCASTER ROVERS BELLES fanbase from, our hard work now starts as we look to improve the match day experience at the club and keep the younger generation of supporters we’ve found with the Challenge 1000 campaign.” Chief executive of the Dons, Carl Hall said: “Last season the Dons sold less than 200 season tickets in total, this year we now have more than 600. It is a great achievement, especially considering the disappointing season we had in 2017. “Even with the reduced prices, our season ticket sales revenue has increased, with the additional funds going straight towards the first team to ensure Richard can make us competitive on the pitch.” Those who have accepted the challenge will be contacted in due course to arrange payment on the outstanding balance.
Neil Redfearn is poised to take charge of Doncaster Rovers Belles for the first time tomorrow as they take on Watford Ladies at Kings Langley. Redfearn was confirmed as the Belles’ head coach last week, replacing Emma Coates who has taken a role with the FA. The former Rovers midfielder has plenty of experience from 30 years in the game as a player and coach. His first management role was in 2001 as caretaker at Halifax , while he has also taken charge of United and Rotherham. Belles chairlady Faye Lygo said: “We’re very excited that Neil has joined our Belles family. His experience within the game is invaluable and will bring a new dynamic to the team, but most
importantly for us he shares our values and visions particularly surrounding development. “We would like to thank Kate Rowson for her hard work as interim coach, she had done a fantastic job and the results speak for themselves.” The Belles are currently at the top of WSL 2 and Redfearn is keen to continue with the current momentum. He said: “It is our aim to have Doncaster Belles competing at the highest level against the elite football athletes of WSL1. “I have been hugely impressed by the players’ ‘buy in’ towards my training methods and beliefs of how the game should be played and hopefully we can keep improving and be successful collectively and individually.”
