A word from the manager

Darren Ferguson Good evening and welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to welcome Keith Hill, and the supporters, players, staff and owners of Rochdale.

The players managed themselves very well, we gave them Christmas Day off and that clearly benefitted the performance.

It is very pleasing to be able to write these notes on the back of two straight wins, both of which came with clean sheets.

Tonight’s game will be tough, Keith will have his side set up well - but we will work hard to maintain the standards we have set in the past few games.

The 1-0 win at Bristol Rovers and 3-0 success over Northampton Town were different types of wins. At Bristol we had to dig in to grind out the victory, especially in the second period as the rain drove down.

We had a crowd of more than 8,000 here on Boxing Day and I have to thank everyone for their support this season. It does make a real difference, and can play a really big role as we look to build in 2018.

Then, on Boxing Day, we put in a really measured and professional performance against the Cobblers. We managed the game really well, especially in the second half when the third goal was key and allowed us to kill the game off.

Happy New Year to everyone, enjoy the game.

I’m pleased with how the players have taken responsibility at this stage of the season

All 72 EFL Clubs have signed up to a new Chairman’s Charter to help put an end to the dangerous use of pyrotechnics.

The result is always the key factor at this time of year, it’s about getting as many points in the four games we’ve got – two victories is a great start.

It is already a criminal offence to enter a football stadium while in possession of a flare, smoke bomb or firework. Any supporter now found to be in breach of the terms of the Chairman’s Charter will also face a minimum three-season Club ban.

(Maybe they’re daydreaming back at

you. Deep!)

Good evenning. I would like to welcome the owners, supporters, players and staff of Rochdale who make the trip down the M62 for the first of our double-header against them. Dale are a very familair opponents after two visits to the Crown Oil Arena this season, and we feel like we owe them one after the way the two games at their place ended. It would certainly be nice to end 2017 with a third straight league win. We had to show different strengths in the wins at Bristol Rovers and against Northampton Town. Down at Bristol we had to show our gritty side – Darren Ferguson talks about this part of the season as “the grind” where you need to dig in and battle. We certainly did that, and again on Boxing Day we controlled the game almost from start to finish. Those results put us up to 13th in the table, and give us a real platform to build on tonight and for the rest of the season. The response to our partnership with the Campaign Against Living Miserably has been fantastic - I saw plenty of people at the Boxing Day match who had already bought one of the limited-edition replica shirts from the club shop.

at the FA Cup game against Scunthorpe United, saw well over 50kg worth of donations plus cash worth more than £50 handed over. One of the most pleasing aspects for me is that so many people at the club have been inspired by the initiative. The Academy players organised a collection at our Cantley Park training ground which resulted in two trolleys full of food being dropped of before Christmas, while leftover money from the Club Doncaster staff collection for Christmas presents used on our hospital visit is also being used to buy extra items for the foodbank. This is a special culture. We recognise the unique position we are in as a hub of elite sport in Doncaster, and how we can use that to inspire people and amplify special causes. The crowds we have been getting this season have been fantastic, as has the unwavering backing of fans. Thank you, and there is plenty for us to look forward to in 2018. Happy New Year, and enjoy the game.

A recent addition to home games is the DRFCfans4foodbanks collection, which has been organised by Rovers support ers. The first collection, which was held

CRAIG ALCOCK Craig Alcock is the type of player that every club needs, capable of playing in a number of positions on the pitch and a great character off it. Although he has not been on the field as much as he would have liked so far this season, the defender is still encouraging his team-mates and putting himself in the frame for a place in the matchday squad.

in training and pass on pointers to the younger players so I try to do that as much as possible.” The 30-year-old defender is now in his sixth season working under manager Darren Ferguson, which includes spending three years at fellow Sky Bet League One side Peterborough United.

In his time working with the manager, Alcock has gained an abundance of tactical knowledge from the man “The squad is key at this he labels as “the best I’ve time of year, it can be the make or break point of the worked with”. season because a few wins “I’ve worked with the can shoot us up the table” manager for a long time and I have the upmost respect for him, we both “It is hard training all week for no end have to do what’s best for the team and result, but all I can do is keep working I’ve got nothing but good words to say and try to help off the pitch. I want to try about him,” he says. to create a positive atmosphere within the dressing room. The coaching staff like “We’ve enjoyed a lot of success together the older lads to take more responsibility and we know what to expect from each “Every footballer wants to be playing every week so it has been frustrating for me as it’s not something I’m used to, but the team is the most important thing and the gaffer has his decisions to make,” he says.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS other, his attention to detail when it comes to analysing different games is second to none. “I know the way he works and he’s shown in the past that he trusts me as a player so I’m willing to be patient, I can pass the experience and knowledge I’ve learned from him on to the new players.” With this evening’s fixture against Rochdale the third game Rovers have faced in less than a week over the Christmas period, squad rotation is going to be vital. Alcock believes players on the fringes of the first team squad must be ready to step in and do a job. “The squad is key at this time of year, it can be the make or break point of the season because a few wins can shoot us up the table so it’s important that we really kick on,” he says. “The league is very tough and that’s shown in how tight the league table is, a couple of dropped points in a game can lead to dropping a few places.

Rovers face tonight’s opponents in the Emirates FA Cup third round on Saturday January 6, in what will be the fourth time this season the two sides have gone up against each other. With Dale travelling to the Keepmoat Stadium twice in the space of eight days, Alcock says that can work in different ways when preparing to take on Keith Hill’s team. “Playing an opponent so many times can work both ways for the two teams, sometimes it can work for you and other times against you but we’ll treat every game on merit,” he says. “The league game won’t have too much of an impact on the cup tie as the two games will be slightly different in terms of tactics and personnel. “We just want to get through the tie and get ourselves in the hat for the next round as you never know who you’re going to come up against.”

“We’ve got a really good team spirit and that’s what makes it such a good club to be at, we want to push on in the New Year and really show what we’re capable of.

Looking ahead to the FA Cup fixture, Alcock has fond memories of the competition from when he was growing up. He reckons the more experienced players in the Rovers squad can pass on their memories of the competition to the younger members.

“We’re in a situation where it’s quality over quantity needed in the January window, we want good players to come in to complement the squad we already have.”

“The FA Cup is the main competition away from the league in this country so it’s always special to be involved in it, it’s something to look forward to: FA Cup final day was always a big occasion and

10 10

everyone made a big effort to watch, no matter who was playing, which made it feel special,” he says. “I think the young lads have got the nothing to fear mentality when it comes to the cup competitions, it’s another game and a great opportunity for us to progress.”

To continue the interview with the defender we asked him a few quickfire questions about more quirky topics.

OR

Alcock had his fair share of success during his playing career in the FA Cup too, including reaching the semi-finals while playing for Sheffield United in the 2013/14 season. He also experienced a full house at the Keepmoat Stadium in his first year with Rovers when Premier League side Stoke City were the opponents in a third round tie in January 2016. “The semi-final with Sheffield United is obviously the standout for me, but I’ve experienced the other side of it and been knocked out in the first round by Torquay as well,” he says. “In my first season here we played Stoke and the atmosphere was unbelievable – so we’re looking for something similar to that. When the fans get behind us it really can make a massive difference and we know that whomever we come up against they will always be making plenty of noise and getting behind us for the whole game. “The Arsenal game has given all the lads a taste for what’s out there and we showed that night that we can handle the pressure of a big occasion.”

NEWS Left-back Harry Toffolo is gutted that a broken foot has ended his loan spell at Rovers early. The defender suffered the injury, which looks set to keep him out until mid January, while making a block in the Sky Bet League One clash at Oxford United before Christmas. He said: “I’m gutted, I had a good run in the side and it is really frustrating - but if I had not made the block then we could well have conceded.

Ian Lawlor feels his team-mates’ hard work is a big reason for the festive success they have enjoyed.

period off well. It’s positive for everyone now we hope this can be the start of a run.”

Wins over Bristol Rovers and Northampton Town both came with clean sheets – even though there were a few nervous moments in the 1-0 success at the Pirates.

The festive period is Lawlor’s first with Rovers, as well as coinciding with the end of his first year at the club after his permanent move from Manchester City in January.

“It goes through your mind about the late goals, you’re thinking here we go again, but I think we were really positive, we defended well, and the lads stuck it out, we’d focused on it a lot beforehand and that showed,” he said.

“I’m enjoying my football and I’m really happy here, I have to thank the gaffer for the opportunity, “ he added.

“Our league position doesn’t do us justice, but we’ve been putting in some good performances, we concentrate on ourselves, take it game by game and we’ve started the festive

12

“I’m playing and the team is doing well and the most important thing is that the team are winning games. “I’ve had to mature a lot, as a goalkeeper and a person, and I have learnt a lot since making the step up from Academy football earlier in the year.”

“Obviously we ended up conceding in the last minute anyway, but you don’t know how the match would have gone had they scored then. “If the ball is there to be won I have to put my foot in, it’s just disappointing to miss such a busy period.” The left-back’s loan from Norwich City runs out at the beginning of January, but he would be open to extending his stay at the Keepmoat Stadium until the end of the season. He added: “I have really enjoyed my time here and learnt a lot from all the staff, so I’d be happy to stay here. Progression is the important thing for me at this stage in my career. “Obviously with the injury now it is down to the two clubs to come to an agreement that suits everyone.”

NEWS

Niall Mason was delighted to keep his goal-scoring run going after his first-half penalty helped Rovers on their way to three points against Northampton Town on Boxing Day. Mason’s spot-kick was his second success in four days, following his first career strike against Bristol Rovers on Saturday, and he says he was always confident he would score from 12 yards when the opportunity came up. “It’s something that I used to do when I was in the youth team, and I never really missed when I was younger, I started practising more and I asked John Marquis a couple weeks ago if I could have the next one and luckily he said yes,” he said. “Normally it’s John or Tommy Rowe, but they were happy to let me have it, although I had to persuade Copps too, but thankfully he let me take it and

there was no doubt where I was going with it. “It’s hard at full-back to get goals and, if I can keep taking penalties, then hopefully I can keep this run I’m on going.” The Boxing Day win saw Rovers record back-to-back victories for the first time in Sky Bet League One this season, and Mason is confident this can be the start of a promising period for him and his team-mates. “To get back-to-back victories and clean sheets it gives us a lot of confidence and hopefully we can take that forward now and go on a good run,” he added. “We’ve kept the belief even through the bad run because our performances were good, and, after winning the last two, I think people have seen how far we’ve come and turned things around.”

AWAY TEAM ROCHDALE

TOP STOPPER

DEFENSIVE ROCK

The keeper is in his eighth season with Rochdale, joining the club after two loan spells before his permanent move in 2012.

The full-back has made more than 150 appearances for Dale, following his move from Liverpool as a youngster.

Lillis began his career with Scunthorpe United, helping them to reach the Championship twice in three seasons.

Rafferty came through the ranks at Liverpool, playing internationally with the Irish under-18 and under-19 sides, before joining Rochdale in 2012 where he has remained ever since.

He had loan spells away from Glanford Park at Notts County and Grimsby Town, before two temporary switches to Dale between 2009 and 2011. Like he did with Scunthorpe, Lillis helped Dale to two promotions, this time both up to League One, and he has established himself as their No.1, being a virtual ever present over the past few seasons.

He was a key member of the side that helped Dale to promotion from League Two in 2014.

JOSH LILLIS

2

JOE RAFFERTY

He extended his contract at the Crown Oil Arena at the end of last season, signing a deal with Dale which keeps him at the club until 2019.

MIDFIELD MAESTRO

DEADLY STRIKER

Has come through the ranks at the Crown Oil Arena, where he has gone on to be a star man for Dale.

The forward is in his sixth season with Rochdale, and was named as captain at the beginning of the season.

He has made more than 100 appearances for Dale, scoring his first goal for the club against Coventry City, a strike which saw him claim the Goal of the Season award at the end of the 2014/15 season.

He began his career with Norwich City, spending five years at Carrow Road, with a brief stint on loan at Rotherham United in 2007. Spells at Northampton Town and Luton Town followed, before a move to Turkey in 2009, where he spent six months with Ankaragücü.

This summer saw Camps sign a new three-year deal which sees him staying with his only club until at least 2020. Camps also has youth international caps with Northern Ireland’s under-18 and under-21 sides.

CALLUM CAMPS

10

40

IAN HENDERSON

Henderson returned to England with Colchester United. A move to Rochdale in 2013 saw him help his current side to reach League One in his second season at the club, before scoring 22 goals in the third tier the season after, and he has helped Dale to establish themselves at this level.

19

JOINT FIVE-A-SIDE GOALKEEPER David BUTTON Starting his career in London, Button came through Tottenham Hotspur academy going out on loan to an abundance of clubs during his four-year stint at White Hart Lane. When in League Two, Button joined Rochdale on a one-month deal making no starts but seven substitutd appearances. A few years down the line and Button made a loan switch to the Keepmoat Stadium joining Rovers in the Championship on a twomonth loan deal, making eight appearances before joining Barnsley on an emergency loan deal until the end of the season. Currently, the 28-year-old keeper is currently between the sticks at Craven Cottage where he was part of the team to finish in the play-off spots last season under Slavisa Jokanovic.

DEFENDERS Reece BROWN Began his career at Manchester United, where he was sent out on loan to gather first team experience to aid his development – one of his spells was with Rovers during 2011 on a onemonth loan, making his debut appearance on the same day as an 85th-minute substitute for Kyle Bennett as Rovers lost to Nottingham Forest by one goal to nil. After that Brown moved permanently to Watford for a year where he failed to establish himself in the first-team, then later spending spells at the likes of Barnsley, Bury and Sheffield United before signing for Keith Hill’s Rochdale this summer. He has made four appearances after signing a one-year deal at the Crown Oil Arena.

20

Brian TAYLOR The defender started his career all the with Middlesbrough in 1971. He made a move to Belle Vue in 1975, becoming a first-team reular before movng to Rochdale in 1978 then finishing his career with Bolton St Thomas.

MIDFIELDER Lee WARREN Warren (right) began his career at Leeds United as a youngster in but failed to impress enough to break into the first team so was transferred to Rochdale in 1987. He made 34 competitive appearances in his one season with Dale. A six-year spell at Hull City was next up, with the Tigers paying a reported £100,000 fee to lure him to East Yorkshire. He made more than 150 appearances at Boothferry Park before moving to Rovers in July 1994 where he again clocked up well over 150 appearances in a six-year spell.

STRIKER Carl ALFORD Started his career at Rochdale, and made his debut for the Lancashire side at 16. A handful of substitute appearances were not enough to earn him a stay, and after spells at Burnley and Stockport County he dropped into non-league to try and make his name. And he did that, turning out for Witton Albion, Kettering, Rushden & Diamonds, Dover and Stevenage Borough before moving to Rovers in the summer of 2000. Only on goal came during his spell in South Yorkshire, and he moved on to Yeovil Town in the summer of 2001.

MY WEEK: HEALTH & WELLBEING CO-ORDINATOR Club Doncaster Foundation are making a real difference in the community, Scott Copeland talks us through some of the programmes he oversees MONDAY It’s the start of a new week, so the first thing that I do is catch up with any admin and emails to make sure everything is organised. Once that’s all caught up with, I’ll spend much of the late morning and afternoon cleaning and maintaining the many bikes we have in our bike library. Through the funding we receive from Doncaster Council we’re able to provide bike hire completely free. We have lots of enquiries to use them, especially on weekends, so I work closely with our bike mechanic Mark during the afternoon as he makes sure that they are safe to use and can be loaned out again to other members of the public. We have more than 70 bikes in total of all different sizes and types, including trailers for children. TUESDAY These are quite full on as for most of the day I am out delivering sessions. It is great to get out and make a difference in the community, even when it’s freezing cold, the participants make it worth it. I deliver a cycling, walking and circuits session to the People Focused Group Doncaster on a Tuesday morning, which consists of bikeability and other methods of exercise to keep them active and engaged. I then head to Hexthorpe to deliver another session, this time cooking and indoor curling with adults with learning disabilities. I teach them

22

how to cook healthily on a small budget and how they can manage their food week to week. The curling is a lot of fun but that also keeps them healthy, active and engaged. WEDNESDAY I’m back in the office, providing current Fit Rovers participants with their food diary feedback. We encourage the participants to log what they eat so they can see what an impact that is making om reaching their goals. The feedback I give them allows them to make changes or continue on their Fit Rovers journey, and these will be given back to them on a Thursday session. I also spend much of Wednesday developing new ideas or lesson plans with my colleague Nick. It’s a great chance to be creative in our delivery and make sure that participants want to come back each week. THURSDAY This is our busiest day of the week as this is the dedicated day to our Fit Rovers course. I’ll spend the morning session planning for the evening, and taking the ideas created in the week and putting them into action. Then I’ll go through admin, which involves following up with past participants to check on their progress: we want to instil into people that we are much more than an eight-week long

course, so like to keep in contact to make sure everyone is okay. Before we know it it’s 5pm, which means it’s time to set up the circuits and the pitches for our Fit Rovers vets and the current programme. The programme starts at 7pm, but participants usually get here for around 6pm so they can socialise with a spot of pool, table tennis and music in our common room. At 7pm, we begin our specific course for that week in the classroom, before we take the session outside for the exercise session. The session ends at 9pm and then we spend until around 10pm making sure all the equipment is away and the facilities are as we found them and secured. FRIDAY We are currently in the process of piloting a Fit Rovers women’s session, to see if it is something that will be well taken on a regular basis, so on a Friday I take a session at Hexthorpe. It’s exactly the same concept, but for females – so an eight-week course looking to improve the health and wellbeing of women across Doncaster. SATURDAY We have a Fit Rovers cycling group on a Saturday morning, which allows participants the chance to get together for an alternative activity in their own time. Every other week, we schedule the ride so that the guys are back just in time for kick off at the Keepmoat Stadium so those who want can watch Doncaster Rovers. It works really well and it’s fantastic that so many people get involved.

As we approach the new year I would like to take this opportunity to review the season so far from an Academy perspective.

• Six youth team players making their first team debuts in the Checkatrade Trophy.

As an integral part of a forward-thinking and sustainable long-term plan, the Academy staff are working hard to make sure that the success stories continue to keep happening.

• Youth Team Players once again successfully completing the NCS programme with excellent support from the Club Doncaster Foundation.

This season this includes: • 10 players joining the Academy programme having previously been training and playing with our development centre. • Six of our Under 16 players receiving scholarship offers for the next two seasons. • All of our players receiving a wide range of opportunities such as high ropes, climbing walls, nutrition, psychology and analysis. • The employment of a full-time performance analyst. This has enabled so many of our younger players to have access to a greater detail of analysis than they have ever received.

• Jacob Fletcher making his EFL debut.

• The opening of the new 3G pitch outside the main stadium. • An audit process that has highlighted the excellent work from our academy staff, while also highlighting the exceptional support the academy receives from the owners, the chief executive, the manager and his staff and the wider Club Doncaster staff. It has been a very productive few months with these points and many more and we look forward, as a whole club, to continue this progress over the short and longterm. I hope you all have a very happy and healthy new year. Good luck to the gaffer, the staff and the players.

• The implementation of an outstanding coach development programme. • Danny Amos receiving his first two international caps and his first professional contract.

TEN YEARS AGO: DONCASTER ROVERS IN SEASON 2007-08. Part 13 The transfer window closed on January 31 2008, but before it did there were comings and goings at the Keepmoat Stadium.

goalkeeper Edwards who had replaced the injured Evans, then Richie Wellens had a shot cleared off the line

Experienced striker Gareth Taylor (right) signed for Rovers from Tranmere Rovers, while Northern Ireland international winger Stuart Elliott joined on loan from Hull City.

After 75 minutes Rovers doubled their lead when Coppinger unleashed a fierce shot from outside the box that arrowed into the top corner of the net. Then in the last minute Green scored the goal of the game, volleying in from an angle after a delightful move.

They were intended to give Rovers’ squad, stretched at times by injuries, greater depth on the run-in to the season’s climax. Young defender Sam Hird had his loan spell at Grimsby Town extended, while winger Craig Nelthorpe was loaned to non-League AFC Halifax Town. Leaving the club permanently was goalkeeping coach Barry Richardson, who took up a similar role at Nottingham Forest. On Saturday 2nd February Rovers travelled to London to take on Millwall. Brian Stock and Stephen Roberts were back after suspension, replacing Mark Wilson and Matt Mills respectively. Rovers dominated the game from the outset and could have been three goals ahead before they finally took the lead after 43 minutes. Gareth Roberts and J. J. Price forced saves from Evans and James Coppinger hit a post. Just before the interval Stock’s corner was not cleared and Price was able to stab in from close range. The dominance continued after the interval. Paul Green forced a fine save from substitute

26

Rovers had had 13 shots on target, Millwall none, and it was a tribute to the brilliance of their display that they were applauded off the pitch by the oftenhostile New Den crowd. A week later Rovers were back on home soil again for the visit of Bristol Rovers, whom they had defeated at Cardiff in the previous season’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final. Bristol Rovers had gained promotion at the end of that term and were on an 11game unbeaten run, so would provide a stiff test. In front of a crowd of 8,168 Rovers showed one change from the team that had won at Millwall, Mills replacing Adam Lockwood who had picked up a groin strain. Rovers carried on where they had left off a week earlier, taking control of the game from early on. They almost took the lead after 18 minutes when Coppinger latched

onto a weak back-pass but goalkeeper Phillips was able to scramble the shot off the line. It was goalless at the break and Rovers were frustrated again after 52 minutes when Price’s powerful header rattled against a post. The breakthrough came 20 minutes into the second half when Wellens was brought down by Lescott inside the box. Stock fired his penalty low to the left of Phillips to put Rovers 1-0 up. Paul Heffernan replaced Price after 70 minutes and nearly doubled the lead when he forced Phillips into a good save right on the goal-line. As the game entered stoppage time, Rovers won a free-kick on the edge of the area and Stock’s kick was blocked by a hand in the wall. This time Heffernan had the job of converting the penalty which he duly did, to complete a 2-0 victory. After the game manager Sean O’Driscoll revealed the depth of Rovers’ pre-game preparation. Their scout had noted that Bristol goalkeeper Phillips always dived to his right for right-footed kickers and to his left for left-footers. Stock and Heffernan, both right-footed, had put their successful penalties to the goalkeeper’s left. Rovers’ success was based on more than just the talent of their players. John Coyle

SUPPORTERS A good afternoon and a warm welcome to the fans, players and management of Rochdale for today’s League One encounter. I hope their fans had a safe trip up from Lancashire today, and they enjoyed a brilliant Christmas. When we played at their place it was a case of lightning striking twice with late defeats so we are out for revenge today. The next away game is at Peterborough United on New Year’s Day, and the bus times are in the programme. Unfortunately we did not run the early bus to Bristol Rovers, but the Retford/ Harworth bus stopped off at the Old badger Inn at Easington near Gloucester for a pint and chip butty. I hope they enjoyed the stop. We will be running a home match bus to the Rochdale game in the FA Cup from the Retford, Harworth and Rossington area. Pick-ups are 1pm from Kettlewells, 1.20pm Harworth Asda, and 1.30pm Rossington Styrupp and Labour Club. If you live in the Retford, Harworth, Rossington area, why not use the Supporters Club home bus, which runs every home match at a very competitive price. If you live on Bawtry Road you can also use this service at £1 return. It runs direct to the Keepmoat Stadium and back and there no need to book, just turn up. Please let us know if would like picking up on Bawtry Road - call 07961727769 for more information.

Our North branch also run coaches to most away games from Carcroft, Adwick, and points along the A19 , a good active branch, it makes it much easier to travel if you live that way on call 07780316923 for more information. We also run coaches for certain games from the Sprotborough area, and the travel club have pick ups in the Hatfield area. Please remember there is no alchohol is allowed on the coaches. Thanks to everyone who supported the Retford Branch Christmas raffle, with more than 60 prizes donated. The winners are on the Rovers official website and fans social media. We would like to go on record to thank the club for donating a Season Membership for next season for the draw. The Supporters Club weekend away will be for the last game of the season, away ar Oldham on April 27-29.

Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. Recently the Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust.

discuss a very broad range of topics. It is early days for this new Board, but so far the signs are very encouraging in that nothing has been held back and the trust between club and supporters is evident. As the meetings progress we hope to be able to announce the progress that has been made. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the new requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. IRWT Martin O’Hara

The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the Football League and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club.

We are looking at stopping at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Southport from Friday til the Sunday, cost will be about £125 per person, bed, breakfast and evening meal.

The EFL issued a new league rule informing clubs of the minimum requirement for meeting with supporters and the kind of topics that should be included. That new rule came into force for the 2016/17 season.

The Branch Dinner dance this season will be Friday May 11 2018 at the Mount Pleasant Hotel.

As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL.

Rovers til I die

On top of that the club have initiated a Supporters Board which meets on a monthly basis during the season to

CLUB DONCASTER FOUNDATION

Club Doncaster Foundation is celebrating a record-breaking 2017 across the year 151,159 engagements have been made across the Doncaster Borough with close to 7,000 participants enjoying more than 11,000 sessions. January saw the launch of the Fit Rovers course at the Keepmoat Stadium: Rovers club captain Andy Butler was there to greet participants on the very furst session. Also keeping the team busy that month was a disability tournament, which was supported by the Health and Wellbeing team, and an NCS matchday, which saw the graduates grace the Keepmoat Stadium pitch. Rovers’ annual Junior Takeover Day took centre stage in February, with children from partner schools across Doncaster take on jobs at the Cheltenham game including being first-team manager! The EFL Kids Cup regional finals were also held at the Keepmoat Stadium. March was a special month for the Foundation as they took part in Rovers’ DNA Card launch The whole Rovers

52

squad toured Doncaster visiting different sessions across the community and spreading word of the new DNA Card and Season Membership structure. Meanwhile in the Health and Wellbeing department, the second course was up and running after a fantastic first course. After racking up an outrageous number of hours of community work within Foundation sessions, Andy Butler was named the PFA Community Player of the Year at the annual EFL Awards. April also saw the second Kicks challenge, a ‘top bin’ challenge by John Marquis, Alfie May and Matty Blair: the video got thousands of views and engagements from Kicks participants from across the region. A trip to the Theatre of Dreams was on the cards for the Kicks participants in May, they enjoyed a friendly against their Manchester United counterparts and a stadium tour of the famous Old Trafford. In fact, it turned out to be a great month for the Kicks lads, who also had the chance to ‘play on the pitch’ as they joined schools across Doncaster to grace the Keepmoat Stadium turf in a tournament.

The Sports College also had the chance to play on the pitch during their annual varsity game against Selby College, which they won. Ed Milliband also supported the Foundation’s campaign to raise funds for Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. Doncaster Rugby League held their annual Junior Takeover Day in June, while July saw the first NCS wave as 150 young people embarked on an adventure to the Lake District. Three more waves departed over the summer as they took in their NCS experience. Dame Rosie Winterton MP visited our NCS social action in August to see what an incredible difference young people in Doncaster were making. The NCS graduation was the highlight of September, as more than 700 young

people from Doncaster celebrated their NCS journey over the summer. In October, we released our 2016/17 impact report and our big showcase video that included everything our team got up to in the academic year. November also marked the NCS Autumn delivery as the Doncaster Rovers youth team ventured to the Peak District for a week of adrenalin-fuelled adventure. Following their week away on the NCS residential, the DRFC youth team completed their social action in December while the Sports College hosted their annual Christmas Cup. Club Doncaster Foundation were also nominated Doncaster Business Awards’ chosen charity, which meant the big showcase video was shown to all guests there.

CLUB DONCASTER It is that time of the season in the football calendar when fixtures come thick and fast alongside the festive cheer. Despite a wonderful time of year for football fans across the EFL, the safety of supporters remains the number one priority. While not wanting to dampen festive feelgood factor, supporters should be reminded that the threat level for the whole of the UK from terrorism remains at devere, meaning an attack is highly likely, and sadly we have seen from previous examples that crowded places such as football stadiums could potentially be a target. As always, Rovers are continuing to work with the police and the relevant authorities to ensure appropriate security arrangements are in place to protect supporters. The club therefore encourage fans to enjoy all attended fixtures, but please remain alert and if you see

DONCASTER ROVERS BELLES anything that gives you cause for concern, tell a steward or member of staff. In an emergency always call 999. Why not arrive in plenty of time and soak up all of the atmosphere on offer, whether that is in the Belle Vue Bar or Donny’s Kennel. At times, a search regime may be in place, so please be mindful that bags and stuffed coat pockets can cause delays. Where appropriate, minimise what you carry into the stadium. In the event of a major incident inside the stadium, it is vital you listen to all club announcements and follow safety instructions. In the event of a terrorist incident outside of the stadium, the police advice is to ‘Run, Hide, Tell’. It is important to follow this advice and move quickly away from the stadium and to allow access for emergency services. Do not wait around to film anything on your mobile.

Following the Football Association’s proposed re-structuring of the women’s leagues, the Belles have put in their application for a place in the new league. The Belles’ current league position suggests that on footballing grounds they would deserve a place in Tier 1, but the financial criteria set for entry into Tier 1 are simply beyond the club’s means so we have applied for a Tier 2 Licence. The Belles chair, Faye Lygo, commented that the process was rigorous, with emphasis on financial sustainability and development of players.

“We our proud of our coaching set up and our Development and RTC teams, which are producing some excellent talent.

“Our first team are having a strong season in WSL2 and are currently topping the table with an unbeaten run We have taken into account of League games, and off the pitch there is that teams who have lots going operated beyond their on too.

means have recently gone into liquidation or will not be seeking a license in the top leagues. We think our approach ensures the long term future of the Belles

She said: “We have taken into account that teams who have operated beyond their means have recently gone into liquidation or announced that they will not be seeking a license in the top leagues. We think our approach ensures the long term future of the Belles and we hope one day that performance on the field will trump money in the bank. “The FA are currently consulting with the clubs as to the re-naming of the leagues. There is discussion on whether to follow men’s football or strike out with something new. Our philosophy at the Belles remains the same, with our

54

family ethos and a strong emphasis on development of women in football.

“We are working with our new sponsor UCFB, and we are already planning a big year to celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2019.”

The Belles showed they can compete with the best on the field by pushing big-spending Manchester City all the way in a 3-2 Continental Tyres Cup defeat at the Keepmoat Stadium. Goals from Jess Sigsworth and Christie Murray meant the Belles gave double winners City a fantastic run for their money. Then the Belles strengthened their position at the top of WSL 2 with a 3-2 win over Sheffield FC, again on home soil, before the Christmas break.
