Darren Ferguson Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to the Keepmoat for our second home game in three days. Saturday saw us get our home campaign underway with a point against Crawley and it was very much a game of two halves from ourselves!
Our opponents this evening are a team who we’ve played within the last year or so, having beaten them 3-1 in the FA Cup in December, so we should know a little bit about them and we duly welcome their manager Shaun Derry and his staff to South Yorkshire for the game.
Tonight is about what we can do though. Making our home ground a difficult place to come is paramount and we want to carry on where we left off on Saturday, with the right intensity and on the front foot.
05 In the opening two league games we’ve had 35 shots on goal and 50 crosses in to the box so we’re putting the ball in to the right areas. Overall, we’re glad to have our first point on the board but we want to improve and I know that we will. Enjoy the game Darren

Performance-wise the second half was better but the first half was a difficult one to describe, it lacked energy and tempo which is most unlike one of my teams to be honest.
He was a good competitor as a player and has carried that through to being a manager and they showed what they’re capable of last week in defeating Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Cup.

Gavin Baldwin Welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium for our third home game in little over a week. Your support is greatly appreciated in what has been a busy start to the season for us. It was important to get our first point on the board on Saturday. We feel the performances from all three of our opening games have not been fully reflected in the final scorelines, and are as optimistic as ever about the season ahead.
I am looking forward to the first Supporters Board meeting of the season, which takes place ahead of our next home game against Yeovil Town. We introduced this last year as
A warm welcome to Cambridge United tonight. Their EFL Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday last week showed the real potential Shaun Derry's side have, and I am sure they will have a good season. We had some great feedback from Nottingham Forest fans who came up last Tuesday, and I am sure the travelling fans tonight will have similar experiences. Thank you all for your support, I hope you enjoy tonight's game. Gavin

Saturday was a busy day for most of us at the Keepmoat, as we used it as an opportunity to hold a family fun day. The Club Doncaster Academy put on taster "bubble football" sessions, while the Club Doncaster Foundation staff did some coaching - all before we got on with the serious business of the first-team match. It is a great example of how the different elements of the organisation come together to become more than the sum of our parts.
part of our commitment to engaging with supporters, and there are changes we have introduced as a result of this. One of those changes can be seen in your hands right now as we have reduced the amount of advertising in this programme to the minimum we are allowed under EFL requirements to maximise the content we can provide. The Supporters Board is made up of representatives of our various fans groups - feel free to contact us on DRSB@clubdoncaster.co.uk if there is an issue you think we should give some thought to or would like to contribute to the discussion yourself.

Niall MASON LEARNING HIS CRAFT RAW catches Niall Mason just after breakfast, yet the young defender is still hungry. He wants to make his mark on League Two and, after a nomadic footballing background, might just want to settle down…until the new year at least. “It’s really hard to predict the future, I don’t know what’s happening next month or even in a week but if I do well of course I’d love to stay but we’ll wait and see,” Mason says of his arrival at Doncaster; the latest stop on an upbringing that even transcends continents!
12 Box Office: 01302 762576
We had to “Google” Mason for research purposes and it turns out we’re not the only ones. “I have done so too, actually,” he admits. “I think everyone does don’t they just out of interest. “A lot does come up because I’ve had a busy life so far football-wise. I’ve been to a lot of places and a lot of clubs. “I went to Spain on a summer camp for two weeks that my dad paid for. There were some scouts there from Real Madrid who wanted me to sign and go to Spain, I couldn’t really believe it as I supported them as a kid – I was mad about them – and it was quite unreal. “We ended up moving out there for a year or so and I played for them for about three years. We had to leave Spain in the end because my parents couldn’t find work at all. We then went to Qatar and I stopped playing for two or three years because there are no professional clubs out there. I came back to England and signed for Blackburn Rovers – it’s not the most ordinary academy story!
It was gutting to lose in the last minute but gives me an idea of what first team football can be like. We’ve been working really hard though so I’m sure we’ll put it right. “While I was at Real, Beckham was there, Zidane – who’s last game I went to – and Raul. All the big names – Roberto Carlos – the list continues!”
“In those leagues you get nothing done for you, you’re fending for yourself and you have that drive and you see the hunger that (Jamie) Vardy has.
So, in a nutshell, how was his Football League debut; an injury time defeat against Accrington Stanley at the Wham Stadium in the foothills of East Lancashire?
“Even in League Two there are nice facilities, look here. Imagine what it’s like at the clubs you haven’t heard of in non league! “I guess so but clubs in League Two are going to come to the Keepmoat and think that its not a League Two stadium so I expect us to be really good at home and it to be a big advantage for us.”
“It reminded me of going to watch my dad when he was a manager in non league with Horsham, Bromley etc. – in terms of the stadium – but it was a good game of football and in truth nothing like non league.
With the future of his parent club Aston Villa about as certain as Mason’s abstract past, what can we expect? “I dunno.
“It was gutting to lose in the last minute but gives me an idea of what first team football can be like. We’ve been working really hard though so I’m sure we’ll put it right.” Mason’s background contrasts starkly with that of his teammate Alfie Beestin whom Rovers nabbed from the clutches of non league Tadcaster Albion. The nineteen year old is frustratingly self-effacing about their paths crossing and not the academy superstar stereotype you hear about. “I’m just naturally like this I guess. I’ve got confidence in myself when I’m playing and even though I haven’t played many first team games, I’ve played a lot of games at youth team level and a lot of years playing football. “There are players like Alfie, we had one at Villa called Keinan Davis who came from Biggleswade and a month later he was on the bench in the Premier League so there are good players in non league, it’s just trying to find them I guess!
“I’ve signed there for a year and we’ll see what happens after that. “On a personal level I want to try and start as many games as I can and perform well for Doncaster and for myself because it’s a development period for me. “For the team I want us to win as many games as we can and really try and push up the league as far as we can go. “I’ve known Ricky (fellow Villa loanee Riccardo Calder) for probably two years now. I didn’t play with him much last season because he was at Dundee and then came here to Doncaster but the season before I played with him quite a bit, hopefully I get to play with him a lot more this season.”

“For me, being at Premier League clubs all my life it was quite crazy but the atmosphere was really good inside a small ground.
AWAY TEAM CAMBRIDGE UNITED
The Gaffer Shaun DERRY Managerial Career 2013–2015 Notts County 2015– Cambridge United
TOP STOPPER
1 WILL NORRIS
After spending majority of his professional career on-loan at non-league football clubs such as Braintree Town and Royston Town, Will Norris has played a big part in Shaun Derry’s side since his appointment in 2015.
14 Box Office: 01302 762576
Norris did however feature for Cambridge before the appointment of Derry, he was part of the team that won promotion to League Two after making 15 appearances for the U’s and in that same season he kept a clean sheet against Gosport Borough which saw them crowned 2014 FA Trophy Winners.
1 3
Tricky midfielder Piero Mingoia is a new signing down at the Abbey Stadium after signing from fellow League Two side Accrington Stanley, he has already made an instant impact for Shaun Derry’s side, scoring the first goal of the season for the U’s in a 1-1 draw against Barnet. Born in Enfield North-London he began his footballing career with Premier League side Watford, where he went onto make five league appearances for the Hornets during his three years at the club. Mingoia has also played for the likes of; Boreham Wood and Hayes & Yeading United.
MIDFIELD MAESTRO
7 PIERO MINGOIA
Cambridge United is Shaun Derry’s second venture into club management after he was relieved of his duties from Notts County towards the end of the 2014/15 season. The ex-professional footballer who made over 600 club appearances during his time as a midfielder, he played for some of the biggest clubs in the country such as; Crystal Palace, Leeds United and Queens Park Rangers. Derry was part of the 2010/11 Championship side that were promoted to the Premier League as Champions, he scored his first and only goal for the Hoops against Liverpool at Anfield, QPR won that game 3-2.
5 MARK ROBERTS
DEFENSIVE ROCK Like goalkeeper Will Norris very experienced central defender Mark Roberts has spent majority of his career playing non-league football with teams such as; Chester City, Halifax Town and his hometown side Northwich Victoria.
During his four years at Stevenage he was awarded with the club’s Player of the Year award on two occasions (2008/09, 2011/12).
2 4
Hotshot striker Barry Corr is certainly someone to watch out for, during his five years at Southend United he scored 77 goals in 155 league appearances which helped the Shrimpers to promotion via penalty shootout victory over Wycombe Wanderers. During his first season with Southend he made 47 appearances scoring 21 goals which made him the club’s highest goal scorer that season but his jubilation would be cut short the next season due to an ongoing knee injury. He joined Cambridge United on the 2nd June 2015.

Leo Fortune-West A towering centre forward with more clubs than your average golfer, Fortune-West certainly fitted the remit that Rovers required when they signed him from Cardiff City in the summer of 2003. The giant striker worked in perfect tandem with Gregg Blundell – similarly to how he’d linked up with Robert Earnshaw at Ninian Park – and Dave Penney’s Rovers took home the Division 3 title thanks to their goals. Scoring two on debut against Leyton Orient (and then a hat-trick in the reverse) helped. A year after departing Belle Vue with 23 goals in 104 games the veteran moved to Cambridge and did a job in the Conference with 7 goals in 28 outings.
Glynn SNODIN
LEGEND Where are they now?
Hot on the heels of his younger brother Ian – who featured in Saturday’s RAW – Snodin Snr played more than 300 games for Rovers between 1977 – 1985 and is eighth on the all time list of appearances for the club. During his eight year spell he scored 59 goals as the local lad was a full back by trade but was also more than competent in the Rovers midfield. He returned alongside Ian to stabilise the club in the wake of relegation to the Conference in 1998 and has forged a successful coaching career since.

Hello everyone Welcome to our visitors from Cambridge United for another evening match. Last week we played Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup and they beat us 2-1 in the closing stages of the match. Once I got back into my kennel I checked the results and was shocked with some of them, but that is the way cup matches go! It was so good seeing you all again and I was so happy to meet a group all the way from Texas called Liverpool FC America who had been playing against our academy teams. Great to see them all wearing our new shirt and promotes us more overseas. Look forward to seeing you all again at the Yeovil Town game on Saturday 27th August where you (kids) can get in for a £1 and your parents can get in for £10 to celebrate going back to school! 21

The games are certainly coming thick and fast this week and Darren and his team will be looking for three points in their quest to get back into League One next season. Welcome Kieran SCARFF

Box OfďŹ ce: 01302 762576
The club unveiled Kieran Scarff as our new Rovers Academy Head last week and the former Peterborough United Academy Manager was excited to take up the post and lay the foundations for a promising future.
“We want to make progress in lots of different ways. Number one is about player development, whether it’s under 9’s or under 18’s it’s about them making progress and that’s a long term thing. It’s making sure that our players develop and continue to improve. “Any players we work with – at whatever level – we have an obligation to be role models. Coaches are very influential people for these youngsters and it’s important that we have a positive impact on what they do whether they're with us for a few months or a few
With both the U16’s and U18’s excelling in a pre-season tournament in Sweden, the question is; how soon will we see changes – particularly when the first team are in League 2? “I’ve had some good feedback from Paul Stancliffe and other staff regarding the trip and they performed well in what is an established competition and the fact that they get invited back year on year shows how they conduct themselves as people – which is important to me – and the results they attain. “I don’t think there’s a question of what league you’re in. I think it’s to do with the ethos of the club. “This club wants players to come through and play in the first team so whether you’re in the Premier League or League 2 it’s about the opportunity and one thing that is definitely here is an opportunity and a defined pathway for the younger players.”
45 Box Office: 01302 762576
Scarff outlined the vision for Rovers teams of the future; in line with that of the board: “The training facilities are great and there’s certainly plans to improve things further which is only going to benefit what we’re trying to do,” he said.

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 2 - By John Coyle In August 1939, Rovers had started the abortive 1939-40 season with a 2-0 victory over Rochdale at Belle Vue. On the last day of August 1946, Rovers faced the Lancashire side again. The following players lined up:

Of the players who featured seven years earlier only McFarlane started this game, although Leslie Owens, Sid Bycroft and Jackie Kirkaldie remained with the club. Others had moved on or retired, while full-back Wilf Shaw had lost his life in service of his country. Before a crowd of 8,279 Rovers secured a 2-1 win. On a damp day, which did not make for fluid football, Maddison, on Football League debut, headed Rovers into the lead after 11 minutes. He added a second, also with a header, five minutes before the break. Cunliffe pulled one back after 52 minutes, but Rovers held on for victory. The local press was not greatly impressed, feeling that the forwards lacked cohesion and noting how the defence had struggled to deal with Rochdale’s speed. The following Wednesday, Rovers travelled to Sealand Road to meet Chester. Injuries to Archer and Todd meant that two pre-war men, Bycroft and Owens, were drafted into the side. Scunthorpe, was not to feature again in this season, although he went on to make 16 appearances for Rovers. He became a successful businessman and was later chairman of Scunthorpe United.
The following Saturday it was off to the Wirral to take on New Brighton. They had been Rovers’ final opponents before war was declared, but no longer played at Sandheys Park, which had been damaged by wartime bombing. The Rakers had moved to the Tower Athletic Ground, and the hasty nature of their move meant that players changed in huts while there was little covered
with a penalty but then Tindill, who at the age of 19 already looked a fine prospect, completed his hat-trick. Forsyth’s goal for the home side made no difference to the outcome and Rovers’ 5-2 victory made it three wins from three games and secured their place atop the Division Three (North) table. Before we leave the Tower Athletic Ground, it is worth noting a rather oblique connection with Doncaster Rovers. The ground, once overshadowed by an impressive 567 foot tall observation tower, was home to New Brighton Tower FC, a member of Division Two at the turn of the century. The club

A heavy pitch again frustrated any attempt to play flowing football, but Rovers defended well and went ahead after half an hour through Jordan’s first goal of the season. After 71 minutes Thompson converted a penalty to double the lead and then Tindill’s goal sealed victory although Burton gave Chester a late consolation. 3-1 to Rovers.
accommodation for spectators. Despite this a crowd of 10,242 watched the game, and they were treated to a fine display by Rovers. On an excellent playing surface, two goals from Tindill and another from Jordan established a 3-0 lead for the visitors by half time. Jordan converted his second four minutes into the second half with a trademark header. Bruist made it 1-4
was a speculative venture which lost money, and after failing to gain promotion to Division One it was disbanded on the eve of the 1901-02 season. Rovers were offered the opportunity to take over Tower’s fixtures and thus began their Football League career. The tower itself lasted a little longer than the club: it was demolished in 1921.

Bestall made two important additions before the 1946-47 season. Goalkeeper Archie Ferguson, a veteran of the retreat from Dunkirk with pre-war experience in the Scottish League, was signed after demobilisation from the Army. Jackie Thompson, a skilful inside-forward with an eye for goal was acquired from Sheffield Wednesday. The scene was set for a successful season, although no-one had any idea of just how successful it was about to be. The Football League had decided to resume where it left off in 1939. The divisions had the same composition and the same fixture list was used. As in 1939 Rovers would start their campaign at home to Rochdale on Saturday 31st August 1946. War was over and football was back.
