A word from the manager

Darren Ferguson Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to welcome Derek Adams, and the supporters, players and staff of the visitors who have travelled up from the south coast. Plymouth are a good team who have been in good form, but so have we.

We will assess the squad as the month progresses, but we have more than half the window left. Alex Kiwomya and Luke McCullough are working hard on their recovery from injuries, and I am hopeful of seeing them in some Development games later this month.

We are unbeaten in our past five Sky Bet League One games, and have shown some Enjoy the game. good character to grind out results like the win at Bristol Rovers and come back for the draw at Peterborough. There were also plenty of positives to take from last week’s FA Cup game against Rochdale. That gives us a real sense of belief for this afternoon as well as the rest of the season. January is a month where lots of rumours start flying around in the media, but I’ve never been a manager who makes huge changes to his squad mid-season. Getting Ben Whiteman in on a permanent transfer is great news for us. He has been a key player this season and I am delighted he has joined us for the next few years. It is a sign of the long-term structure we are trying to build as a club.

Thoughts of the chief executive

Gavin Baldwin Good afternoon, and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to welcome the owners, supporters, players and staff of Plymouth Argyle. We can go into today’s match with real confidence after our form over Christmas. There was a real dedication from the players and staff to get some good results, which really set us up for the second half of the season. We are pleased to have been able to keep Jordan Houghton until the end of the season, even though we had hoped to make it a permanent deal. As Darren Ferguson says in his programme notes, he is not a manager who likes to make wholesale changes in the January transfer window – he is much more about working with players and developing them. That fits in perfectly with the vision of our owners. You can see that in some of our early business this transfer window - with Tyler Walker signing a contract extension earlier this week.

us in the summer of 2016 and is now getting his rewards. Maybe some of the other young players who are getting experience in our Academy and Development squads at the moment will follow in his footsteps in the coming years. We are delighted to have been able to secure the services of Ben Whiteman on a permanent transfer. Ben has made a real impression since joining us in the summer, and we are confident he will go on to play a significant role for us this season and over the coming years. This is an indication of the long-term thinking wanted by the owners - which prompted this investment - Ben is a proven talent at this level and can now go on to fulfil his potential with us. 2018 promises to be a really exciting year as Club Doncaster continues to grow and provide a truly stable base for the future.

We want to give young players a chance to really progress. We want them to know that if they have the ability, a good attitude and apply themselves right then they will be given a chance with us. You can see really well with Alfie Beestin establishing himself in the first-team and being a key part of our good recent results: he has worked hard since joining

IAN LAWLOR As a young player, Ian Lawlor made the brave decision 12 months ago to leave the comfort of Premier League side Manchester City. He signed for Doncaster Rovers to not only make a name for himself, but to become an established goalkeeper under a manager in Darren Ferguson who loves to improve talented players.

never have expected to have achieved that in a short space of time,” says Lawlor. “Consistency is always key for goalkeepers but as long as the team are doing well I don’t really think about plaudits too much, personally it’s a nice achievement but it’s just a start and I want to keep pushing on. “It doesn’t really affect us if the personnel in the defence changes because we’ll have worked all week leading up to that game on how we’re going to play, and who is going to play where. “My goals for the new year are to just keep improving, I’m the type of person to take game by game and don’t look too far ahead as that is when you can get caught out.” Rovers are unbeaten in their past five league games, a run of form which has seen them climb into the top half of the table. That is a result of hard work and determination to keep on doing the right things, according to Lawlor. “The main reason for the turn in league form is the amount of hard work we’ve been putting in, the players and coaching staff sat down and analysed where we could improve,” he says. “Where we were in the league at the time didn’t do us any justice given the performances we were putting in, but we’re starting to get some luck now and things are turning our way. The main message was to keep doing the right

things out there on the pitch and when you look back it’s really worked for us, we know the manager believes in us so he deserves massive credit.” With just three goals conceded in their past six outings in Sky Bet League One, Lawlor is pleased to see that fortune has fallen in Rovers’ favour in recent weeks, after late goals conceded had previously cost them. “It’s obvious to say but any team that doesn’t concede many goals will always be successful, it’s a solid foundation to build from and something that we’ve worked on a lot to improve at,” he says. “The Bristol Rovers game was when I felt our luck has changed, we got a decision go in our favour when their goal was disallowed when in the weeks before that, it might have gone against us. “I haven’t watched that incident back but I remember pulling off a save from the free-kick and then getting up as they put the ball back in the mix. We’ll take the decisions that go in our favour. “The concentration has always been key for us no matter what the score is, as a team and as a defensive unit we don’t want to concede and want as many clean sheets as possible. “Sometimes being comfortable in games can be when your concentration has to be at its best, 2-0 is always a tricky score line because you know the next goal could change the game. The manager

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS has shown that he is capable of changing formations while still being successful so we know that we’re capable of winning in different ways.”

To continue the interview with the goalkeeper we asked him a few quickfire questions about more quirky topics.

Lawlor feels he has improved his overall game as a goalkeeper during his time at the Keepmoat Stadium, including knowing when to be vocal with different players around him.

Getting used to different personalities in a team sport is crucial, being able to predict what they are going to do and how they are going to react both on and off the pitch. “I’m vocal at the right times and won’t shout at people if I think they might take it in the wrong way, different players respond differently to a wake-up call so you need to know your teammates,” he adds. “I’m a passionate player and a team player too, I love all the lads in the squad and will always back them. “We’re together as one on the pitch and are there to stick together against the opposition. “Loan spells earlier on in my career have helped me learn to handle disappointments in football as they are bound to come around every so often. “Being mature as a keeper is key and you have to look after yourself on and off the field, leading by example is something I try to do as much as possible.”

NEWS

Rodney Kongolo is looking to kick on following the extension of his loan deal from Manchester City until the end of the season. Kongolo has made 29 appearances for Rovers so far this season, scoring one goal, but he is pleased to be staying at the Keepmoat Stadium for longer. “I’m very happy to be staying here until the end of the season, I’ve been enjoying my football and I always wanted to stay, especially for a full season, because you develop that relationship with the players here and that can help,” he said. “I’m getting minutes in and getting to know people, playing in this league

has been very good, its much harder physically and technically to understand everything quickly, it’s very different to what I’ve been used to. “You haven’t seen the best of me yet, I want to score more goals, but my highlight has to be the game against Arsenal, that was such a great experience for me, and now I’m looking forward to earning my place in the side now and I’m looking to fight for a spot. “I’ve really developed as a player during my time here and I’m really enjoying my football, all the lads have helped my both on and off the pitch, so I’m delighted to be able to stay.”

Jordan Houghton is open to signing for Rovers on a permanent transfer this summer. Houghton’s start against Rochdale last Saturday was his first since his loan from Chelsea was extended until the end of the season, with the midfielder not wanting to be rushed into making a decision on his long-term future. Therefore a loan was agreed, meaning he could be registered in time to line up against Dale. “Options are limited in midfield at the moment and the manager was keen to get me back, so I think the loan was the best option for everyone,” he said. “All parties had Saturday’s game in mind, it would be my first permanent move so I had to make sure it was right for everyone around me. I’m definitely open to it, though. “Signing permanently rather than on loan is a big commitment, it means relocating fully up here, which I am willing to do, but just didn’t want to be rushed.”

a massive game and in the short-term it was massive to get it done. I always wanted to stay and now we have six months to sit down before the summer. “I’ve been happy with my time at Chelsea, I’ve been there since I was eight, but I’m happy to find a home after and kick on and push to where I want to be. A lot can happen in the next six months, but I’ve enjoyed my time here so far and long may it continue.” Houghton has confidence Rovers’ can build on their strong League One form. “We’re in a good place at the moment though and, barring the Rochdale match, we’ve been on a decent run,” he added. “I’ve signed to push for a play-off position and there’s no reason why the top six can’t be a realistic aim, I wouldn’t be here if that wasn’t the case.”

The midfielder wants to enjoy his football before making a decision on a permanent move in the summer. “With Ben Whiteman going back it left us a bit open in central midfield, we were heading into

NEWS

John Schofield praised the Development side’s first half display after they drew 4-4 against Morecambe at Cantley Park. A Liam Mandeville double, along with goals from Cody Prior and Max Watters put Rovers in control, before a Garry Thompson hat-trick for Morecambe meant they had to settle for a share of the spoils on Tuesday afternoon. Schofield said: “We were in control at half time so it’s disappointing not to win the game, we had to find a balance between killing the game off but not leaving ourselves too open. “We scored some nice goals and looked a threat going forward, the conditions were tough to play good football in but we gave a good account of ourselves.” Schofield was also happy with the performance of full-back Tyler Walker,

14

who has agreed a contract extension with the club until the end of the season. He added: “These games are crucial for the younger lads and it enables them to get a run of games under their belt against good players. The first-team coaching staff are at these games so get to see players like Tyler performing on a regular basis.” Walker has targetted these games as a chance to prove his worth and earn a stay beyond the summer. Four Development side games in January provide the youngster, who played earlier this season in the Checkatrade Trophy win over Sunderland U23s, a chance to impress manager Darren Ferguson. He said: “I want to play as many minutes as I can, then once this run of games are out the way we’ll see what happens.”

AWAY TEAM PLYMOUTH ARGYLE

TOP STOPPER Argyle’s captain is in his second spell with the Pilgrims, rejoining the club in 2013. McCormick spent eight years with Argyle in his first stint, being a part of the team that earned promotion to the Championship in 2004. Later that year, he moved on loan to Boston United for a month, before returning to Plymouth and establishing himself as No.1. A spell away from the game was ended when he signed for non-league Truro City for half of the 2012/13 season, where he then spent the second of the season at Oxford United. He moved back to Devon to join Argyle in 2013, where he then became captain at the start of the 2016/17 and helped them to promotion alongside Rovers from Sky Bet League Two.

23

LUKE McCORMICK

MIDFIELD MAESTRO The attacking midfielder is in his third season with Argyle after signing a new contract in the summer. Carey came through the ranks at Celtic, making one appearance in the Europa League, but he spent most of his time with the club out on loan with Bohemians, where he helped them to win the League of Ireland, as well as stints at St Mirren and Huddersfield Town. He made a permanent switch to St Mirren in 2011, where he helped them win the Scottish League Cup in 2013. He then spent two seasons with Ross County, before moving south to join the Pilgrims in 2015. In his first season he helped them reach the League Two play-off final, and last season saw him win Plymouth’s Player of the Year award and a place in the League Two Team of the Year.

18

10

GRAHAM CAREY

DEFENSIVE ROCK Like his captain, the defender is currently in his second stint with Argyle. Sawyer also spent eight years with Plymouth in his first spell, but spent time on loan at Weymouth and Bristol City, and also spent two seasons on loan at Exeter City, being a part of the famous Grecians side that earned an FA Cup replay away at Manchester United in 2005.

GARY SAWYER

He then spent two years with Bristol Rovers, before a move to Leyton Orient in 2012, where he helped the O’s reach the League One play-off final in 2014. He returned to Plymouth in 2015, and was made vice-captain in 2016, helping the Pilgrims to promotion to League One last term.

DEADLY STRIKER The former Rotherham man is enjoying his second season with the Pilgrims.

RYAN TAYLOR

19

Making more than 150 appearances for his hometown club, Taylor spent six years with the Millers, also going on loan to Burton Albion and Exeter City – returning from his spell at the Grecians to score two goals for Rotherham in their League Two play-off final win over Dagenham and Redbridge in 2010. Taylor signed for Bristol City in 2011, before moving on to Portsmouth in 2014. A stint with Oxford United followed, before a move to Plymouth in January this year. Taylor scored on his Argyle debut in a 3-0 win over Devon rivals Exeter, and last month he marked his return from injury with a goal against Rotherham.

JOINT FIVE-A-SIDE GOALKEEPER Remi MATTHEWS Yet to make a professional appearance for Norwich City after coming through the ranks at the Canaries. Matthews got his first taste of professional football in 2015 at Burton Albion when their first team goalkeeper, Chris Weale, picked up an injury meaning he spent a month on loan at the Brewers. The 23-year-old then joined Darren Ferguson’s Rovers side for the end of the 2015/16 season - making nine appearances. He had a spell at Hamilton Academical before joining Argyle on an emergency loan in October - a temporary switch which was renewed at the end of last month meaning he will be in the visiting squad today.

DEFENDERS Aaron TAYLOR-SINCLAIR The Scottish left-back was on Aberdeen’s books as a schoolboy, but got his first proper taste of senior football with spells at Montrose then Partick Thistle. He moved to Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2014, before joining Rovers under Paul Dickov the following summer. He was a regular starter that season, but a knee injury suffered in the final game of the campaign kept him out of most of 2016/17 - he then moved to the Pilgrims this summer.

20

Rufus BREVETT The defender came through the ranks at Rovers as a youngster breaking into the first team, making 129 appearances for Rovers over the course of three years. He impressed enough at Belle Vue to earn a move to top-flight Queens Park Rangers in 1991, featuring 178 times – scoring once for the R’s against Southampton in the Premier League. He also had spells with fellow London sides before joining Plymouth Argyle in 2005. He featured 13 times for the south coast-side, having a period on loan at Leicester before moving to Oxford United the following summer.

MIDFIELDER Jordan HOUGHTON The youngster has spent entire career at Chelsea after joining them in 2003. He got his first taste of professional football at Gillingham where he played 12 games, scoring one. In March 2016 Houghton joined Argyle in League Two where he made 10 appearances, and hit one goal (against Morecambe in March 2016). Houghton joined Rovers in August 2016 as cover for the injured Luke McCullough. The midfielder made the holding midfield position

his

his own, scoring against Leyton Orient, extending the loan until the end of the season. A knee injury in February saw him return to Chelsea, but he came back to South Yorkshire this summer and has again extended the loan until the end of the current campaign. He also continued his record of scoring once in every loan move, netting in the 6-2 FA Cup firstround win at Ebbsfleet United.

STRIKER Terry AUSTIN The forward enjoyed his first real run of first-team football with Plymouth after joining them in 1976 as part of the move that saw Paul Mariner join Ipswich Town from Argyle. He made 69 appearances for the south coast side, scoring 20 goals, before moving to Walsall. Also had spells with Mansfield and Huddersfield, beforespending the 1983-84 season at Belle Vue. Austin was on the move again a year later, moving to Northampton Town.

MY WEEK: ASSISTANT MANAGER As Darren Ferguson’s assistant boss Gavin Strachan oversees daily training for the Rovers first-team and much more MONDAY I’ll be at our Cantley Park training ground for 7.15am. We’ll have already reviewed Saturday’s game, which is something I do on the Sunday, and probably have looked at the last game of our next opponents. I am in early to organise which players are doing what in training, as some of the lads who played on Saturday will use Monday to continue their recovery from the game while others do more high intensity work. We’ll plan Tuesday’s session before everyone goes home. I try to find some time in the gym too. TUESDAY Training is a bit more intense now, and we incorporate some aspects of what we expect from the next game – something like switching play, or attacking via the wider areas. I’ll often attend a game on a Tuesday evening, looking at U23 games for potential signings or upcoming opponents. WEDNESDAY This is a rest day for the players and the coaching staff all try to get some time away from the job too, though most use it as a bit of an admin day. At the moment the transfer window is open which adds to the workload, and I spend a lot of time throughout the week liaising with our head of recruitment Russ Wilcox. THURSDAY We get some squad work with the players, looking at formations and tactics for

22

the weekend. Occasionally I step in for the gaffer with his pre-match press commitments – usually when he has meetings he needs to attend. FRIDAY We work on set-pieces ready for the game the following day, we also have some small-sided games so there is a competive element. If we have a long away trip then there will be some travel required the day before. MATCHDAY 11am: If the youth team are at home then I take in the first half at Cantley Park. I think it’s important the lads can see the first-team staff taking an interest in how they are doing. 12noon: I head to the Keepmoat Stadium, and always seem to get the short straw and have to bring the coffees in. We have an hour or so as a coaching staff in the manager’s office to fill in the teamsheets, ca-tch a bit of the early game on TV and prepare ourselves before the players come in. 1.20pm: The players are all in for a video meeting, where we go through our approach to the game – particularly focused on our attacking play. 1.45pm: I go with the captain to the officials’ room to exchange teamsheets. One copy goes to the media manager to prepare the official teamsheets and

social media, while we get our first look at the opposition’s line-up. What the referee says varies from each person, sometimes it’s just a quick handshake and exchange of teamsheets and sometimes it is a little more in depth. 2.15pm: The players are out doing the warm-up. I spend a bit of time with the outfield players making sure they are ready. 3pm: I use a radio to keep in touch with our analyst Adam, who is based in the gantry and can watch back key moments. This helps us identify if we need to make any tweaks such as to player positioning. 3.45pm: The manager’s voice is the most important just before the match or at the break, but I may also speak to a couple of players individually just to back up some important points. 5pm: My Saturday evening very much depends on how the match went!

Words from the Academy manager

KIERAN SCARFF It was great to see the way the Checkatrade Trophy was utilised, receiving recognition from the Football League in their monthly newsletter that is circulated to all clubs and the EFL’s partner organisations. Our use of the trophy in relation to the opportunities given to young players to receive first team opportunities was the headline in an article based on this subject. To effectively be seen as a club leading the way in this is testament to the club philosophy in terms of developing players. In addition it was also great to see Danny Amos given recognition by the Football League. Danny was awarded a place in their ‘XI’ last month. These monthly places are given as recognition to apprentices for football progression, education progression and for their work within the community. Danny thoroughly deserves this recognition following his international caps, his professional

contract, first team debut, academic progress and his general superb attitude. I wouldn’t be surprised to see others awarded this recognition before the end of the season. Our younger age groups have started training again this week after enjoying a good break over Christmas and new year. I know they will have an enjoyable second half of the season with our excellent academy staff and look forward to watching them grow further as young players but more importantly as young people enjoying the opportunities they receive. Good luck to the gaffer, the staff and the players.

Paul Stancliffe felt his Rovers U18s side played outstanding football at times during the 1-1 draw with Mansfield Town last Saturday. James Morris’ strike ensured the young Rovers side claimed a point, and went close to claiming victory when Lewis Scattergood’s effort came back off the crossbar. Stancliffe said: “I’m very happy with that performance – the only disappointing thing was that we didn’t win, and I thought that we thoroughly deserved to do that with the way we played. The performance at times was outstanding. Even when we went down to 10men we still passed the ball and moved the ball round with confidence and we were very affective.” The point continued the strong form of Stancliffe’s side from prior to the Christmas break. Stancliffe added: “If they keep doing the things they’ve done in this match then they’ve got a chance of continuing the unbeaten run we’re on. It’s all about standards – it’s how we want to play and this was exactly how we wanted to play.”

TEN YEARS AGO: DONCASTER ROVERS IN SEASON 2007-08. Part 14 On Tuesday February 12, 2008, Rovers travelled to meet AFC Bournemouth, looking to make it four wins in a row. Bournemouth had won at the Keepmoat Stadium earlier in the season but had struggled since going into administration, for which they had been docked 10 points. They suffered a further blow when skipper Danny Hollands was injured in the warm-up. An unchanged Rovers side was quickly out of the traps, taking the lead in the first minute. Gareth Roberts put over a cross from the left for J. J. Price (pictured)to head powerfully home. Brian Stock almost made it two after 18 minutes when he shot just wide. After 40 minutes Bournemouth’s Cooper, already on a yellow card, was dismissed for a bad tackle on Richie Wellens, an incident which provoked a melee which resulted in Price and Mark McCammon being booked. Rovers dominated the second half and Price and Gareth Roberts both had shots blocked before Price sealed victory in the 70th minute, converting Wellens’ neat pass. The win meant Rovers were still in second place. The following Saturday was a day many Rovers fans had been looking forward

26

to as Leeds United were due to visit the Keepmoat Stadium, only four weeks after the sides had met at Elland Road when Rovers had won 1-0. A capacity crowd was expected for the game which was due to kick off at 12noon. Unfortunately there was a sharp frost on the Friday night and with part of the pitch surprisingly left uncovered, an early morning inspection by the referee resulted in a postponement. Rovers’ next game was a week later when they faced fourth placed Carlisle United at Brunton Park. Carlisle’s game the previous week had also been postponed so both teams would be fresh. Rovers made one change, a fit-again Adam Lockwood replacing Matt Mills, while recent signing Stuart Elliott featured on the bench for the first time. The freezing weather of the previous week had been replaced by rain and strong winds and the pitch was very heavy. Nevertheless, Rovers managed to play some good football and dominated the first half. Their best chance came when Stock’s fierce shot was well saved by Keiron Westwood. After 40 minutes Rovers lost possession

and Carlisle’s Cleveland Taylor got free on the right. His low cross found Danny Graham, who swept home at the near post. Rovers continued to have the better of the game in the second half but couldn’t find the net. Paul Green and then James Coppinger both fired just wide of the target. Elliott, who replaced McCammon to make his debut, also went close to an equaliser just before the end. Unfortunately Rovers could not manage to score and Rovers suffered their first away defeat since September 22, when they lost 2-3 at Southend. They also lost O’Connor, who went off just before the end and would need a hernia operation. The defeat at Carlisle meant that Rovers slipped into third place, going below Nottingham Forest on goal difference. Both teams were well behind runaway leaders Swansea City. There was another looming issue affecting the promotion race in League One: Leeds United had been docked 15 points at the start of the season after coming out of administration. Chairman Ken Bates had vowed to overturn this and an appeal was still pending. If Leeds won back some or all of their lost points, the promotion picture would look very different. John Coyle

Taking 10 points from a possible 12 from our past four league games will certainly instil confidence into Darren Ferguson’s side who are facing old League two rivals Plymouth Argyle from last season. Plymouth will be confident after an improved run of form over the Christmas period so, with both teams on a run of good form, we hope it is Rovers who snatch the win today. ADVERTORIAL

In 2020 the UK, USA, and the Netherlands will unite to commemorate the voyage of the Mayflower in 1620. This 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower from Plymouth UK to Plymouth Massachusetts USA is a unique opportunity to commemorate the legacy of the passengers and crew who undertook the journey and to highlight their stories and heritage. William Bradford, one of the most important figures in the Mayflower Pilgrims story who became the second governor of the Plymouth Colony, was born in Austerfield which makes Doncaster the birthplace of the Mayflower Pilgrims movement.

38

Doncaster and Plymouth have through these events become historically linked and through this game we continue this association. The Pilgrim movement came about through adversity, and personal beliefs, in the right to achieve the aims that allowed for freedom of expression, the right to live in peace and exist as a community in respectful friendship. The Visit Doncaster team marks this fixture as just one of the many Mayflower 400 events that will take place between now and 2020. It aims to create a legacy and ensure that communities and visitors understand the importance of our local history with the rest of the world.

The latest from the

Communications team They say that in football you can never look too far ahead: but in some jobs forward planning is essential. Which is why as a communications team we’ve spent some time recently thinking about next season. Not that much time – there isn’t a great deal of downtime over Christmas due to the rush of fixtures – but enough to have a first draft of some of the things we want to do. You may actually see us experimenting a little bit over the coming months. A few more news stories based on player interviews here, a few more videos there. We are always going to be constrained by time and resources to a point (you should have seen how many media staff Arsenal had when we played them, yet we feel our output at least matched their in terms of quality), but we’re clear that we want to provide the most engaging and entertaining content we can to provide an insight into Rovers and Club Doncaster. There are some incredible stories to be told: the Club Doncaster Foundation changes lives on a daily basis, while the ever expanding Club Doncaster Sports Village means more and more people can stay active and healthy thanks to our facilities. Recent programmes, such as the Boxing Day one dedicated to mental health, show the incredible impact football clubs can have on their fans – genuinely to the point of helping save a life. So what do you want more of? Less of? Roughly the same of? Please let me know

via email - you can get me on media@ clubdoncaster.co.uk. Let us know what you are interested in, and we’ll try and shape our team to provide it. One of the areas I feel has been a real success this season is our audio commentary on iFollow Rovers. Last season we had some hiccups at away grounds where the facilities were not ideal, but, touchwood, so far this season the higher standards at League One grounds combined with the new providers mean we have not had the same reliability issues. Andy Williams is providing regular cocommentary for home games, following in the footsteps of John Marquis and Alfie May earlier in the season. A monthly subscription to iFollow Rovers costs just £4.49, providing audio commentary for all first-team matches plus access to exclusive videos. At the moment that includes full recordings of every press conference held before and after games (four in total) as well as full recordings of matches available from the following day (rights restrictions mean these cannot be available straight away(. You can read more about iFollow Rovers, watch some free videos, or subscribe, at www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk/ifollow. Luke Thornhill Club Doncaster media manager

SUPPORTERS A good afternoon, happy new year and a warm welcome to the fans, players and management of Plymouth Argyle to the Keepmoat Stadium. The Green Army fans are amongst some of the most loyal fans in the country, with the journeys they have to make throughout the season, some coming from deepest Cornwall, which can be a couple of hours onwards from Plymouth, they always travel in great numbers. We had a great day at Home Park eariler in the season, and had an excellent victory: a coachload of us stopped the weekend, and although the weather was not brilliant, we had a great time on the Hoe and down in the harbour area. I hope you all had a great festive period: Rovers did picking up 10 points out of 12, and once again we had great followings at Bristol Rovers and Peterborough. At the Bristol game we ended up stopping at the Old Badger Inn at Eastrington near Stroud, as we thought Cirencester would be too congested, had a great time in there consuming 53 chip butties, we are looking at repeating these kind of stops on the longer away games. The next away game is at Shrewsbury next Saturday: bus times are in the programme, please book early, so we know how many buses to book. This is followed on the Tuesday 23 by the re arranged game at Scunthorpe, departure times are Retford 5.40pm, Harworth 5.50pm, Bawtry /Rossington 6pm, Punches 6.05pm, Infirmary 6.15pm and

44

Keepmoat 6.30pm - again book early. If you live in the Retford, Harworth, Rossington area, why not use the Supporters Club home bus, which runs every home match at a very competitive price. If you live on Bawtry Road you can also use this service at £1 return. It runs direct to the Keepmoat Stadium and back and there no need to book, just turn up. Please let us know if would like picking up on Bawtry Road - call 07961727769 for more information. Our North branch also run coaches to most away games from Carcroft, Adwick, and points along the A19, a good active branch, it makes it much easier to travel if you live that way on –call 07780316923 for more information. We also run coaches for certain games from the Sprotborough area, and the travel club have pick ups in the Hatfield area. Please remember there is no alchohol is allowed on the coaches. The Supporters Club weekend away will be for the last game of the season, away at Oldham on April 27-29. We are looking at stopping at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Southport from Friday til the Sunday, cost will be about £125 per person, bed, breakfast and evening meal. The Branch Dinner dance this season will be Friday May 11 2018 at the Mount Pleasant Hotel. Paul Mayfield

Viking Supporters Co-Operative Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. Recently the Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust.

discuss a very broad range of topics. It is early days for this new Board, but so far the signs are very encouraging in that nothing has been held back and the trust between club and supporters is evident. As the meetings progress we hope to be able to announce the progress that has been made. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the new requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. IRWT Martin O’Hara

The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the Football League and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. The EFL issued a new league rule informing clubs of the minimum requirement for meeting with supporters and the kind of topics that should be included. That new rule came into force for the 2016/17 season. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have initiated a Supporters Board which meets on a monthly basis during the season to

Club Doncaster Foundation partner schools from across the region have been busy writing poems as part of the Premier League primary stars writing competition.

“It just goes to show how much of an impact the Premier League are making with projects as such, it gets children involved with writing poetry because they want to, not because they have to.”

The regional competition hosted by the Foundation challenges students to write about resilience, with the chance to win complimentary Rovers tickets and signed merchandise.

Club Doncaster Foundation staff also held their own poetry competition over the Christmas period to inspire the children in schools, following in the footsteps of Alan Shearer, who also wrote his own poem for the campaign.

Open to all primary school children, the competition is part of the national Try Try The winners are Kristian, Edward and Ollie Again campaign supported by the likes of from Retford St Joseph’s Primary School. CLUB DONCASTER The Dons’ pre-season fixture against Leigh Centurions scheduled for tomorrow at the Keepmoat Stadium has been postponed at the request of the Championship side. Dons chief executive Carl Hall said: “We are obviously disappointed to lose this game, which would have been a really good test for our lads and a good match for the fans, but understand Leigh have some injuries and cannot send a side as a result of this. I have a good relationship with Leigh owner Derek Beaumont and am sure he is as gutted as I am at this, but am sure we can sort something out for next pre-season - at which point they could well be a Super League side again.” Leigh Centurions owner Derek Beaumont said: “I am obviously gutted to let Carl and his Doncaster club and fans down,

when we got relegated I assured Carl we would still proceed with the game on the terms required of Super League clubs and that was always my intention. “I found this difficult to cancel last minute as I have always lived my life treating others as I expect to be treated and I would hate for this to happen to me in the same situation. I have taken measures to ensure that this doesn’t have a significant impact on the Doncaster club off-field. “I would like to thank Carl for his understanding. I know it has greatly disappointed him, but he is a genuine guy and knows through our relationship that this has been difficult for me to do.” Tickets for the Dons friendlies against London Broncos and Batley Bulldogs are available at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
