A word from the manager

Darren Ferguson Good afternoon, and welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium for this afternoon’s clash with Rotherham United. I’d like to welcome manager Paul Warne, as well as the supporters, players, staff and owners of the Millers. It is pleasing to be able to pen these notes on the back of an FA Cup first round win at Ebbsfleet. The players showed some real character to come through the game, but the quality really shone through in the second half. There were lots of positives to take from the game, we had to show a lot of character to come from two goals down and get ourselves back in it. We kept going and added more quality to our play.

I hope some of you can join us on Tuesday night when the youth team take on Blackpool in the FA Youth Cup. Kieran Scarff, our head of Academy, along with Paul Stancliffe and John Schofield have overseen some great strides in our youth setup and you could really see that as they fought back against Walsall in the first round. Kick-off at the Keepmoat Stadium is at 7pm. Please join me before today’s match in a minute’s silence to remember those who have sacrificed so much to fight for our freedoms. Lest we forget. Enjoy the game.

I was delighted with the way we played as we did a lot of what we’d worked on throughout the week in training. We’ve won six games out eight now so we go into today’s match full of confidence. I know the effort and the commitment is there from the players, now we are looking to ensure that is translated into a collective and consistent winning mentality.

Thoughts of the chief executive

Gavin Baldwin Good afternoon, and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I would like to welcome the owners, supporters, players and staff from Rotherham who have made the short trip to today’s game. Saturday’s 6-2 FA Cup first round win at Ebbsleet, which I am told is the first time we have scored six in a competitive match this millennium, means confidence is high going into today’s fixture. This followed on from the win at Bury and Checkatrade Trophy shootout success over Scunthorpe United. We can feel confident about what lies ahead for the rest of the season, having progressed beyond the first round in all three cup competitions and looking to climb the League One table. Should he play today, James Coppinger will make his 550th competitive appearance for the club. This is an incredible achievement and he should be proud of this, and his two goals last weekend show he can still have a real impact on games.

We have been really pleased with the take-up for Doncaster Rugby League season tickets, having introduced a Challenge 1,000 push this winter which means if we sell 1,000 we will reduce the cost to just £30 for adults. And, this is perhaps more exciting for us, season tickets are free for those 16 and under. With both the Dons and Rovers we recognise the importance of building for the future by bringing in young people as supporters. This weekend is always special in football, as we remember those who sacrificed so much to ensure our freedoms. We will be marking Remembrance before today’s match with a bugler playing The Last Post and a minute’s silence, and I trust everyone in the ground will join me in paying their respects. Enjoy the game.

Here’s hoping we are marking 600 outings for us at this point next season! He talks us through some of the steps he takes to maintain his standards in the My Week feature later in the programme. Thanks to everyone who came to the Big Bang last Friday. As an organisation we challenge ourselves every year to try and make it bigger and better than ever, with a light show the latest addition.

JOE WRIGHT Joe Wright’s performances this season have earned him plaudits from all quarters as he continues to grow into a solid central defender.

for any partnership especially one at the heart of our defence. We will always discuss what we’ve done well and not so well during games.

Wright has developed his game this season, and has gone on to start every 2017/18 league game alongside club captain Andy Butler.

“I’m definitely learning from him and picking up the tricks of the trades so to speak, I’m constantly looking for pointers as to where I can improve.”

“I’ve said before that I did a lot of work Wright joined the club from Huddersfield with Gavin Strachan Town last summer after while I was out of the side a loan spell at Accrington last year and worked on Stanley the season before, “Going back to basics in different parts of my game the first games helped me, and has settled in well so that’s helped me going during his time in South I identified areas I wasn’t into this season,” he says. so strong in and continued Yorkshire. to work on them” “Going back to basics in “I think I’ve matured a the first few games helped lot since I’ve been here, me, last year I could have before I came I’d only had been better but I identified areas that I one season in professional football so it’s wasn’t so strong in and continued to work about developing as a person as well as a on them. player,” he says. “Me and Butts get along really well, we speak on and off the pitch which is key

block and stop a shot from going in – sometimes that can lift the crowd as well so I get a buzz from that.

now has his sights set on a place in the senior team after an impressive start to the season.

“It’s always a player’s aim to be playing regularly in the team, so it’s something that I’ve really enjoyed and that has definitely developed me.

“I had a call up to the U21 squad but I’m too old for that now so the senior squad is the next step up for me, it’s something I’m working towards,” he says.

“The place feels like home now, we’ve got a great set of lads and I don’t live too far away either so it’s been a nice transition for me.”

“The manager gets a lot of young players in the squad and a lot of them have come in over the past couple of years, so there’s no reason why I can’t push for a call up.

The 22-year-old initially came into the side in the absence of the injured Mathieu Baudry but, with the Frenchman now back fit, Wright is relishing the battle to retain his place in Darren Ferguson’s starting XI. “There’s a little bit more pressure on me now to keep my place in the team with players coming back from injury, but that’s something that will drive me to keep my position at the back,” says Wright. “That competition for places is important as you want to be in the team on merit, ultimately that makes you play well as you know there is someone there to take your place. “I would like to think I was pushing Frenchy last year when he was playing well, so that probably improved him as a player as well and it can work for me in a similar way.” Wright has been called up to the Wales U21 squad earlier on in his career, and

10 10

“The physical element of football is something I enjoy, being a centre back is a very physical position to play in so you have to be willing to get stuck in at times.” Along with the Welsh connections, Wright has grown up in Yorkshire and knows all about the rivalry between the two clubs involved in this afternoon’s game. After his spell with Huddersfield, the defender has a number of friends who support a different clubs throughout the region meaning he is well aware of the bragging rights at stake. “It’s a Yorkshire derby so these types of games tend to take care of themselves, it will be a physical game and we’ve got to be mentally strong,” he says. “The step up has been good for me personally, we’ve only had a couple of poor performances and could have had more points than we’ve managed to pick up. It’s a massive game as

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Rotherham are our biggest rivals in this league so the form book goes out the window so both teams will be looking to take advantage.

To continue the interview with the defender we asked him a few short fire questions about more quirky topics.

“Being from around here there’s always people that you know when you come up against the Yorkshire teams so it will be nice to get one over on them.”

OR

Rovers go into the game on the back two wins in their last three home fixtures in Sky Bet League One, with the aim to make the Keepmoat Stadium the fortress it was in the 2016/17 campaign. Wright is confident that if the team can cut out individual errors, the wins will continue to flow and Rovers will start to climb the league table.

OR

“Games help the young players to gain experience every weekend but I think once we cut out the errors we’ll start to pick up more results,” he adds. “After the Southend game the gaffer said it looked like me and Butts were enjoying it because we had a lot of long balls to deal with so it is enjoyable to keep heading the ball away. “It’s strange because we’ve been a lot tighter at the back this season and don’t give many chances away, but we’ve been guilty of a few individual errors. “A lapse of concentration from time to time can really hurt us – there’s a lot of young players in the squad so over time we will learn.”

NEWS Captain James Coppinger was full of praise for his team-mates after they came back from 2-0 to defeat National League side Ebbsfleet United and book their place in the second round of the Emirates FA Cup. Coppinger was influential in the second half turn around, chipping in with two goals, and was delighted to see his side show great character after going behind. “We had a scare being down two goals in the first half, it would’ve been nice to not have been down at all, but it’s really pleasing, especially after us all taking a bit of criticism recently, to come back and win how we did,” he said. “Their goals knocked us off our stride, but to get two goals right before half time and respond like that it was massive, they were a good side and we made it difficult for ourselves. “Getting those goals gave us a massive wake up call, but it was great for us to score six goals because

12

after half-time they didn’t really test us, and we always looked like scoring.” Coppinger was also pleased with the way his side stepped up in the second half, and he was quick to point out that the hard work the team have been putting in looks like it is paying off. “We have a young team, and the way the lads have picked up this new formation so quickly is pleasing because the hard work we are putting in on the training ground is starting to show,” he added. Rovers will host Scunthorpe United or Northampton Town, who will replay their tie at Glanford Park on Tuesday, in the second round.

NEWS

Development coach John Schofield praised the attitude of the senior players who fired his side to a 4-0 win over Hartlepool United reserves on Tuesday. Two goals from Andy Williams, the first from the penalty spot, were added to by strikes from Alfie Beestin and Liam Mandeville. Schofield said: “The senior players were excellent, and it was great to see them scoring goals. If you score goals your confidence goes through the roof, so it has been a really good exercise. “I thought it was a really good performance, 90 minutes under the belt for some of the more senior players who need it and some really good football at times. This is not only a stepping stone

14

for the younger players, but for the senior players to get game time.” Although it was players from the firstteam squad who scored the goals, it was a fresh-faced side where the youth team players more than held their own. Schofield added: “It is their stepping stone, they are comfortable and having a really good spell at the moment. Now it is about being consistent, so when they play in the youth team on Saturday they need to hit them same standards again. “Then whether their next game is in the first team, youth team or Development squad then they need to maintain the standards. They need to maintain the standards regardless of which team at Doncaster Rovers they are playing in.”

AWAY TEAM ROTHERHAM UNITED

TOP STOPPER Borrowed from Fulham, the Slovakian under-21 goalkeeper signed a season-long deal with the Millers in the summer. Beginning with hometown club MFK KoĹĄice, Rodak made the move to England in 2013, signing with Fulham, but got his first taste of English football with Farnborough in a brief loan spell. Rodak then spent half a season with Welling United, then the second half of last season with Accrington Stanley where he gained a lot of praise for his performances in Sky Bet League Two. Rodak made his first appearance for Fulham in their Carabao Cup tie with Wycombe Wanderers, but made his move to Rotherham towards the end of the summer transfer window.

13

MAREK RODAK

MIDFIELD MAESTRO The Australian winger signed a two-year deal with the Millers following his departure from South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley in the summer. Williams began his career in English football with Portsmouth, spending two years with Pompey in their Academy but making only a handful of appearances for the first team. He then signed for Fulham, but spent most of his time with the club away from Craven Cottage. He had loan spells with Gillingham and Oxford United, before a move to Barnsley, initially on-loan before signing permanently for the Tykes in 2015. Williams spent three years in total with Barnsley, helping them to a double Wembley win in 2016, with victories in both the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and the Sky Bet League One play-off final.

RYAN WILLIAMS

DEFENSIVE ROCK Central defender Wood started his career with Sheffield Wednesday, coming up through the ranks at Hillsbrough. In his seven years with the Owls, Wood helped them win promotion back to the Championship, and in 2008 was named captain of the side. The year after though, Wood found himself out of the Wednesday side and went on-loan to Coventry City, before joining the Sky Blues permanently in 2010, spending three years at the Ricoh Arena.

RICHARD WOOD

6

After a season with Charlton Athletic, Wood found himself back in South Yorkshire, this time with the Millers. Despite three loans away from the New York Stadium, Wood is now a regular in their side and has been a key player in their good start to the season.

DEADLY STRIKER The frontman is on a season-long loan from Championship side Ipswich Town.

KIEFFER MOORE

24

Moore started in non-league, first with Truro City, before signing for Dorchester Town. His performances in the lower leagues lead to thenChampionship Yeovil Town signing him in 2013, and he scored nine goals in 58 appearances for the Glovers. After a brief spell in Norway with Viking FK, Moore returned to England with Forest Green Rovers. There Moore scored seven times in 35 appearances, before being sent on-loan to Torquay United. His brief loan spell with the Gulls saw him score five goals in four games, and he joined Ipswich in January 2017.He has started brightly with the Millers, scoring 12 league goals to date for Rotherham in their charge up the table.

19

JOINT FIVE-A-SIDE GOALKEEPER Andy WARRINGTON Started his professional career at York City in 1994. He spent five seasons at Bootham Crescent before signing for Rovers in 1999. The experienced shotstopper had the most successful spell of his career while at Belle Vue and helped Rovers to consecutive promotions from the Conference to League One. Warrington suffered his fair share of injuries during his time at Rovers though, including a broken jaw followed by a broken leg suffered in the memorable cup tie against Manchester City in 2005. He joined Bury on a permanent deal in 2006 before signing for Rotherham less than a year later. He settled back into life in South Yorkshire quite comfortably and went on to play more than 200 games for the Millers across seven seasons with the club. Warrington is now the goalkeeping coach at Grimsby Town.

DEFENDER Colin CLISH

Left-back Clish came through the youth ranks at Newcastle United in 1961 and played 20 times for the Magpies after breaking though into the first team. He signed for Rotherham for a fee of ÂŁ5,000 and spent five years with the club. He made 128 appearances for the Millers before a move across South Yorkshire to local rivals Rovers. Clish quickly

20

established himself as an important player in Rovers’ side and played 100 times for the club over a three-year stay. A serious leg break in 1969 meant he spent several months on the sidelines and struggled to regain his place in the team once back fit, which eventually led to him signing for Gainsborough Trinity in 1971.

MIDFIELDERS Martin WOODS The Scottish midfielder (pictured) started his career with Leeds United before moving to Sunderland in 2005. He spent just one season on Wearside before signing for Rotherham United. Woods scored four goals in 36 appearances for the Millers before moving across South Yorkshire to join Sean O’Driscoll’s Rovers side in the summer of 2007. The 31-year-old went on to play more than 100 games during his time at the Keepmoat Stadium, becoming an influential figure as Rovers established themselves as a strong Championship outfit during their five year stay in the second tier. Injuries hampered Woods towards the end of his stay at Rovers, and he moved to Shrewsbury in 2015 before signing for Ross County.

Paul GREEN Green signed for Rovers from Sheffield Wednesday as a youth team player and went on to become a consistent performer. He made his debut in 2001

while the club were still in the Conference and was a key member of the side which gained consecutive promotions. Green played more than 230 games for Rovers, with his final one being in the victory over Leeds at Wembley in 2008. He had spells at Derby and Leeds before joining Rotherham in 2014. Green played a key role in the side which survived relegation from the Championship under Neil Warnock.

STRIKER Jonson CLARKE-HARRIS

Had spells with Coventry and Peterborough as a youngster but never played a senior game for either before he was snapped up by Oldham in 2014. The front man scored seven goals in 45 appearances for the Latics before signing for Rotherham in 2014. The 23-yearold has made more than 50 appearances for the Millers since joining the club while battling to overcome a serious knee injury suffered last season. Clarke-Harris enjoyed a loan spell with Rovers in 2015, signing for Paul Dickov’s side as he looked to regain match fitness. He scored one goal in eight games for the club.

21

MY WEEK: FOOTBALLER If he features today, James Coppinger will make his 550th competitive appearance for Rovers. He tells us how he keeps going MONDAY I get up at 6.45am, I try to get to the training ground for 8.30am. I get some breakfast then go to see Joe, the physio, or Sam the masseur for a massage on the calves and hamstrings. I also do some stretching in the gym before we have a meeting to analyse Saturday’s game. After that we’ll go out and train. It’s usually a quieter recovery day, with some of us in the gym or going for a swim at Nuffield Health. If we’ve a game on the Tuesday we’ll do some shape work to prepare. TUESDAY This is an overload day. We come in at the same time and have the same initial routine, but we have the catapult vests on so the fitness team can monitor how hard we are working. We spend a couple of hours on intense all-round training looking towards what we are going to be playing against on Saturday. WEDNESDAY Recovery is the aim, so I get a lie in until 7.30am or 8am. I take the kids to school, depending on whether my wife is working, and try to chill out. My daughter is not in full-time school yet so I look after her, or go see my family. It is hard, but I have to try and do as little as possible so I am fresh for Thursday and Friday. When I was younger I used to do more and get away with it, but now it’s impossible to do the extra stuff and remain fresh - even if it means saying no when my lads want to be out kicking a

22

ball about. I do take them to football training on a Wednesday evening and coach the team they play in. THURSDAY We are shown notes on the opposition, with their strengths and weaknesses, before a video meeting to go through what we expect from them on Saturday. We do some shape work based on how we are going to play, with a light session and nothing too strenuous. One of the players will join the manager in talking to local and national press to preview the game, I enjoy doing this regardless of where we are in the league. FRIDAY We keep it simple and try to keep everyone relaxed, so after the gym we do boxes, a bit more shape work on what we want to do with the ball then five-a-side games. The losers have to pay a forfeit. Then we do a bit of work on set-pieces, both for and against, which is really important for the weekend. This is the one evening when I don’t do anything with the kids after school - on Mondays there is tennis, then football every other night - to relax and look forward to the game. MATCHDAY 8.30am I have a bit of a lie-in, but I get to spend a bit of time with the kids while having breakfast before needing to head down to the ground. I try and focus and relax as I drive down.

1pm: The players all arrive, as we walk in from the car park we see a lot of the same faces asking us to sign autographs or pose for photos. We come in via the West Stand reception, where Shelley and Malc sort any tickets we need for family and there are sometimes some shirts for us to sign. 1.15pm: We go into the meeting room which is next to the changing room for a final refresher on the opposition’s weaknesses, then we get changed and start doing some stretches. 1.45pm: As captain, me and the assistant Strachs go to the match officials’ room to exchange teamsheets - we get a copy of the opposition line-up, they get ours and both sides give a copy to our media guys so they can do the teamsheets and announce the line-ups at 2pm. The referee discusses his approach to the game and what he wants from us as captains. 2.15pm: We head out for the warm-up. I’ve been doing this so long now that I trust myself to warm-up properly but I ensure my team-mates do it well and we can take it into the game. 3pm: Once the match starts you need to get into the zone, you need to get lost in the game because if you are too conscious of what is going on around you in the stadium you are not

engrossed in the game like you need to be in order to perform to your best. 3.45pm: Depending on how the game goes, there is a little bit of analysis from the gaffer and the players. We have a bit of time to refuel with water or gels. 4.50pm: We can be in the stadium from half an hour to an hour afterwards, depending on how the game went and your individual performance. We warm down, and the lads who have not played go back out with our fitness coach Ben Rome to do some running. We have ice baths available, too, and there is a post-match meal available. If picked as Man of the Match by the sponsors or Legends’ Club members you go over to the East Stand, where the match announcer Jonathan interviews us and we make a presentation. Luke, the media manager, will always also ask a player to speak to the press so supporters know how the players are feeling. 7pm: I get back through the door and see the kids. I’ve spoken to my dad on the way home to talk about the game. As I’ve got older I’ve got better at switching off, especially with the kids now which means I can’t take work home with me. 10.30pm: I know I said I like to switch off, but there is always time for Match of The Day!

23

TEN YEARS AGO: DONCASTER ROVERS IN SEASON 2007-08. Part 9 The FA Cup exit at the hands of Oldham Athletic meant Rovers had no game on the first Saturday of December 2007. The enforced break might have been a blessing in disguise because several players were nursing injuries. As well as loanee Matt Mills, back at Manchester City for treatment on a knee, Gareth Roberts, Graeme Lee, Steve Roberts, Paul Heffernan, J. J. Price and Brian Stock were all being treated by physio John Dickens. None of them was available for the visit of Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday December 4, so youngsters Craig Nelthorpe and Matty Noble were selected on the bench along with Kevin Horlock, back from a long-term absence. A Brighton side unbeaten in 10 games proved difficult to break down and there were few chances in a cagey first half. The main talking point was another injury, this time to Sean McDaid, who was hurt in a bad tackle by Fraser, who was only booked. On the hour mark Martin Woods did well to block Lynch’s header on the line and 10 minutes from time Lewis Guy forced a good save from Michel Kuipers, but the game ended 0-0. Rovers had already met Oldham three times in cup competitions and the following Saturday they faced off again. On a typically cold and wet afternoon, Rovers were boosted by the return of

24

Stock, while Steve Roberts replaced Gordon Greer. With Rovers unbeaten in six League games and Oldham in seven, a close encounter beckoned. Both sides could have scored in the 13th minute, with Neil Sullivan saving well from Hughes and from the clearance Guy’s shot rattled the home bar. Just before the interval Oldham took the lead in controversial circumstances. Allott’s shot was deflected by Hughes past Sullivan, apparently via an arm, but referee Whitestone waved away the protests of the Rovers players. Already a goal down, Rovers almost went further behind after 75 minutes when both Hughes and Davies had shots blocked on the line. In the final minute Rovers had a lucky break: James Coppinger was fouled by Taylor and, although the offence appeared to be outside the area, the referee pointed to the spot. James Hayter sent Crossley the wrong way and, while Oldham fumed at the decision, Rovers headed back to Yorkshire feeling, perhaps, rough justice had been served. Despite extending their unbeaten run with a hard-earned point, Rovers had now won only once in the past five League games and they welcomed Yeovil Town to the Keepmoat Stadium on Sunday December 16 hoping for a first home win over their old Conference rivals since 2000.

Rovers fielded an unchanged side from the Oldham draw but struggled to impose themselves on the game. It came as little surprise when the visitors took the lead, albeit in fortunate fashion. After 37 minutes Way’s snap shot from 20 yards out was deflected past Sullivan via Steve Roberts’ outstretched boot. The second period brought little improvement, despite the introduction of Coppinger and Price, and Yeovil doubled their advantage after 78 minutes when Stewart headed in Barry’s free kick. That seemed to be it but, after 90 minutes, Stewart was sent off for a second offence and then Woods’ cross-shot was turned into his own goal by Skiverton. Rovers strove for an unlikely equaliser but unfortunately time ran out and they had suffered their first League defeat since October 2. The crowd had been a disappointing 5,967, perhaps affected by Christmas shopping, but there was also a feeling that Rovers’ season was perhaps coming off the rails. Manager Sean O’Driscoll had some thinking to do before the busy festive programme. John Coyle

Words from the Academy manager

KIERAN SCARFF

It has certainly been a productive few weeks for our academy programme. As I have always said, creating opportunities for our players, along with producing players for the first team are up there with our main priorities. In recent weeks our young players in all age groups have received opportunities from team building activities, psychology and nutrition workshops, university open days, guest speakers discussing the dangers of gambling and alcohol abuse and presentations from PFA staff. They have also had the opportunity to take part in a variety of games including EFL festivals and games against foreign opposition whilst street football has also been utilised for our younger age groups. The progression of a number of individuals has been rightly well documented and to see five youth team players playing in the Checkatrade Trophy in a team with an average age of 19 once again shows the opportunity that our manager does provide for young players at this football club. Six of our youth

team players have featured in first team games and nine have been in squads. The opportunities our academy staff work so hard to provide for our players, along with the commitment from them and their families, added to the commitment of the manager and the board to have a productive Academy continues to work. A special mention must go to the youth team squad for an excellent performance in the first round of the FA Youth Cup to win 4-3 versus Walsall. It was a performance that highlighted the identity of our teams and was full of energy, enthusiasm character and quality. The squad are back in FA Youth Cup action on Tuesday November 14 against Blackpool. It is a 7pm kick-off at the Keepmoat Stadium and it would be great to see as many of you as possible here to support our young players. I know how much they and the staff appreciated the support they received in the first round.

Paul Stancliffe praised his side’s resilience, which he believes meant they deserved their 2-1 win against Rochdale in the EFL Youth Cup. James Morris opened the scoring in the second half after a quick free-kick was taken by Matthew Overton. Rovers were eventually pegged back in the 84th minute by James Neild, but Keegan Townrow’s late header won the game. Stancliffe said: “I’m happy with the win and I’m happy for the team, we worked ever so hard. We started off well in the first half, but got a bit bogged down. Rochdale are a good team, but we did well to keep going until the end. I think it would’ve been a shame if we didn’t get the win in the end because overall I thought we deserved it.”

NEWS Rovers midfielder Morgan James is relishing another opportunity to play on the Keepmoat Stadium pitch in Tuesday’s FA Youth Cup tie against Blackpool. The youngster was part of the U18s squad which came from behind to beat Walsall 4-3 in the first round, setting up Tuesday’s second round clash. He said: “It’s a beautiful pitch. I look forward to getting on it again and staying in the competition – we all want to make it through and go as far as we can. “A crowd is always good to have, as it can help you out a lot. If they make a bit of noise when you do something good it gives you that little bit extra.” James has featured in both Rovers’ home Checkatrade Trophy games this season, and is now a regular in the Development squad. He has taken a lot of confidence from his involvement with the first-team. He added; “It was brilliant, I was really excited and a bit nervous when I stepped out on the pitch and there was a crowd there which we’re not used to - but you just have to put the nerves out the way

28

and concentrate on playing. The senior players are brilliant, putting an arm around you, as are the staff. “They show belief in us, which makes us believe we are good enough. “It makes us feel like we can perform at the top level, if you can perform in the first-team it means that in the first-team you can express yourself and improve in areas you might not have tried to before.” Tuesday’s FA Youth Cup second round fixture will again take place at the Keepmoat Stadium. The match will kick-off at 7pm and is open to spectators, with entrance £3 for adults, £1 concessions and £1 for Season Membership holders. Fans will be housed in the West Stand. There has to be a winner on the night, meaning extra-time and penalties will be used to decide who progresses if required. Get your tickets from the Box Office now by calling 01302 762576.

Hello everyone, Welcome to our game against Rotherham United and thank you all for being here today. The game is live on TV so let’s make plenty of noise! I hope you all had a good half term and enjoyed Halloween, Bonfire Night and our Family Fun Day – I played snooker against Doncaster’s professional player Chris Keogan! I will be starting my countdown to Christmas soon! The big Christmas light switch on in the town centre is November 18 so I am looking forward to that!

COMMERCIAL Welcome to today’s local derby game against Paul Warne’s Rotherham United. Last week saw a break from league football with the FA Cup first round matches being played and both teams will be looking for a win today with Rotherham pushing for a top four placing and Rovers looking to climb up safely into the middle of the table. We hope all our members enjoy the game. Today we welcome long term friends and partners of the club Polypipe as match sponsors. Hundreds of fans packed into the Club Doncaster Foundation Family Stand in the Keepmoat Stadium on Thursday for Rovers’ family fun day.

a range of challenges from the Club Doncaster Foundation, enjoy a petting zoo, hold scary birds of prey and have a go on a bouncy castle.

It was a highlight of a week of activities to keep young supporters entertained during the half-term weekend. The entire first-team squad were present to join in the fun, joining supporters on stadium tours, signing autographs and posing for photos.

Club Doncaster marketing manager Mark Hughesman said: “It was fantastic to see so many young fans with big grins on their faces throughout the afternoon, whether they were taking on a Rovers player on Fifa 18 or having their picture taken on the shoulders of someone they all looked to have a great time.

Fans were also able to play against Doncaster’s professional snooker player Chris Keogan, use the latest Playstation virtual reality technology thanks to GAME Doncaster, take on

“I’d like to thank everyone who came down, whether supporter, player or volunteer, for contributing to what we put on and what we do every matchday in the Family Stand.”

The latest from the

Communications team

While it does not feel like there are many quiet months when you work at an organisation like Club Doncaster, for the communications team it has been an particularly busy September and October. We have had 15 first-team games for Rovers in that time, with a further 13 youth and Development team outings. We also had three Dons games to cover – one of which was in Toronto – and recently backed the exciting season ticket launch which could see fans watch every home game this season for a one-off fee of just £30. We think that’s great value. Although we now have a central full-time media team of three people, I listed the number of games above to highlight why we still need to rely so heavily on extra help from budding young journalists. Dan Breslin and Alex Gibbings joined us this summer to gain first-hand experience which will really help their chances of forging careers in the media. As I tell them and anyone who comes to me for advice, there is no substitute for experience. Both are making real contributions to Club Doncaster and I’d like to thank them for their efforts.

We’ve also recently been able to recruit John Marquis and Alfie May onto our matchday team, with them joining Robbie Andrews for co-commentary duties for those following our matches on iFollow Rovers’ audio commentary. Alfie will again be in the press seats with us today. Having a player on cocommentary is something I’d like to do as often as possible, but it is going to depend on availability. I hope those who listen have found they have been able to bring something different to the service. Our iFollow commentary at Ebbsfleet last week was also a bit different, as the home club were unable to make an ISDN line available to us. Thankfully we have built a good relationship with Radio Sheffield over the past couple of seasons, meaning they were willing to provide a commentary feed to us. Again, I’d like to extend my thanks to Radio Sheffield’s sports editor Andy Giddings for allowing us to continue providing the service. Luke Thornhill Club Doncaster media manager

SUPPORTERS Official Supporters Club A good afternoon and a big welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium to Rotherham United. It has been a few years since we played them and I’m sure both teams will want to put on a good show for those watching across the globe on TV. Thanks to the fans who made the trip down to Ebbsfleet. They certainly did not make it easy for us to get there, with coaches having to park three miles away from the ground and even an escort to go in their club shop. Our next away game is at Fleetwood on Saturday October 18: bus fares and times are listed in the programme for the season, you can join the Supporters Club on the away coaches and automatically get your reduced travel on the day. Prior notice for the game v Bristol Rovers on December 23, we are hoping to stop of at Cirencester on the way down so the bus times will change. Please book early if you intend to travel, and let us know if you need cancel your seats, When parking at the Keepmoat Stadium for away games, only use car park 2 unless notified by the club or Paul, as the other car parks are now monitered and we don’t want anyone ending up with a parking fine. Our North Branch run coaches to most away games from Carcroft, Adwick, and

44

points along the A19 , a good active branch, it makes it much easier to travel if you live that way on call 07780316923 for more information. We also run coaches for certain games from the Sprotborough area, and the travel club have pick ups in the Hatfield area. Don’t forget we do run a bus to all home games from Retford to the Keepmoat Stadium, stopping at Harworth, Rossington and along the main route down Bawtry Road so put your hand up to stop us – fares are very reasonable too. You can join the Supporters Club on the away coaches or at the Supporters Club shop which is situated in the Club Doncaster Academy before home matches. You can also book on the coaches there or call Paul on 07961727769, or you can download a form at doncasterroverssupportersclub.com. Christmas draw tickets are now on sale, we could do with people to help sell tickets for us in different parts of ground, and any donations of raffle prizes will be gratefully accepted. If you need any old programmes from any Rovers games, the Supporters Club shop has a vast variety stretching over the past 40 years. Rovers till we die Paul Mayfield

Viking Supporters Co-Operative About 12 months ago two football supporters, one from Liverpool and one from Everton, were travelling back from a football supporters type meeting that had been held that day in London. As they sat on the train heading northwest they were discussing ideas for football supporters to utilise their strong community roots and to somehow help those who were less fortunate than themselves: #FansSupportingFoodbanks was born. The success they have enjoyed since that day has seen many hundreds of families benefit from the football community coming together and showing their support for their fellow man rather than just their football team. The idea has grown to a point where they are a key contributor to the foodbanks within the Liverpool area and their ongoing work has attracted a lot of interest and support from around the country.

92 clubs in the Premier League and EFL could mirror this very same idea and use the community spirit in such a positive way. So, supporters at Doncaster Rovers are also keen to join in this football community driven idea and very shortly a collection point will be established at all DRFC home games. Many families in the Doncaster area need the help of foodbanks, let us, as DRFC supporters, show that the football community can help them in times of need. Please help by supporting the foodbank, or giving up some of your time and volunteer a few hours on a matchday to help those who need it. If you wish to help call Martin on 07825 632516. Martin O’Hara

Newcastle United’s supporters trust replicated the idea and has also proven to be an ongoing success. Huddersfield Town have also started to follow in the same footsteps as their bigger brothers and hope that they can be as supportive of their local community. At a recent meeting held in Newcastle an idea was floated that supporters from all

CLUB DONCASTER SPORTS COLLEGE

Club Doncaster Sports College lecturer Craig Collins brought home three medals from the ICO World Cup.

opposition from German opponents. He also won a silver medal in weapons, and a bronze medal in points fighting.

Craig competed with a small team from his taekwondo academy, representing England at the three-day event in Birmingham. They entered several disciplines including Korean patterns, creative forms, weapons, points fights and light continuous fighting, bringing home 12 different medals from three competitions.

Craig and his team impressed so much so that they have qualified to compete at the International Sport Kickboxing Association World Championships held in Montego Bay, Jamaica, in September 2018.

Sports College principal Adi Turnpenny said: “All at Club Doncaster Sports College would like to add our congratulations to Craig for his remarkable achievements – it is great to have a world class athlete on our staff which, of course, has immeasurable benefits for our students’ education.” Craig won gold in Korean patterns and creative forms, seeing off strong

52

He said: “It was a great achievement to be successful at an international event, not just for myself but also for my students. “It’s great to be a positive role model and hopefully raise aspirations for what young people in Doncaster can achieve.” With little to no funding in the sport, Craig and his team will have to cover the cost of the trip to the World Championship. You can help him raise funds at www. justgiving.com/crowdfunding/cctkda.

Club Doncaster Sports College students were welcomed back from half-term on Monday with a special visitor. Doncaster Rovers player Matty Blair spent the afternoon answering questions and giving advice to the sports students, who are working hard to forge a career in the industry. Keen to pick the brain of the Rovers winger, the students asked course specific questions to help with their studies. College principal Adi Turnpenny said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to have access to professional athletes that can come in and share their experiences, the students always learn so much from the Q&As. “They can ask questions that link directly to their course and then use the answers

as part of their case studies.” As well as helping with their studies, Matty also helped to inspired the group with their own experiences. Matty said during the Q&A: “If you’d asked me five years ago where I’d be now, I wouldn’t have dreamed I’d be stood in front of you as a professional footballer, “I know it’s cliché, but it’s honestly about working as hard as you can. “If you work hard enough and are passionate enough you can achieve anything you set your mind to and I fully believe that.” For more information about Club Doncaster Sports College, call the team on 01302 764663.

CLUB DONCASTER Doncaster Rovers have carried out work to prepare the Keepmoat Stadium pitch for the winter. A SIS grass universal machine was brought in to re-stitch areas of the pitch to prepare for the winter months. Head groundsman Jim Davison said: “This company can come in and re-establish areas such as the goalmouths that take a lot of wear, which means we are prepared for whatever the great British winter can throw at us. “We want the pitch in good condition for all the teams that play on it, so it’s good

54

to have this available as we can use it whenever we need it, you don’t have to start a fresh as they can stitch the pitch right where we need it. “We put a lot of work in over the summer to prepare the pitch, and the work we are putting in now means we’ll be ready for action whenever the stadium is called upon. “These guys have invented the machine which has just come back from America, it was unveiled at Stamford Bridge to start with and it is a great piece of kit – I was pleased we were able to be one of the first to use it in the UK.”

DONCASTER ROVERS BELLES Interim boss Kate Rowson suffered defeat in her first game in charge despite a battling performance against WSL 1 side Birmingham. The former Watford coach, who has taken over after the departure of Emma Coates who has taken on a role with the England national team, saw her side make a confident start. But the Blues took control and in the 20th minute captain Emily Westwood had a header cleared of the line by right-back Rachel Newborough. Substitute Rachel Williams hit the winner as Birmingham came from behind to claim their first FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup group victory.

The Belles went ahead when Scotland international Christie Murray scored with a thumping volley, but Freda Ayisi equalised in the third minute of first-half stoppage time. Ayisi’s strike partner Charlie Wellings then put the home side in front 13 minutes into the second half, before Williams headed a third in the 75th minute. But after winger Kirsty Hanson pulled goal back a minute later the Belles looked on top and pushed forward for an equaliser. And a minute from time Murray was denied a levellerby a fine save from goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.
