Darren Ferguson Good afternoon. I’d like to welcome Gary Bowyer, the supporters, players and staff of Blackpool. We enjoyed the celebrations last weekend after securing promotion, but we know we still have a job to do if we are to finish the season with the title. We’ve ticked off the first box in securing promotion, and we can be confident for the remaining games.

Supporters have been brilliant with us this season, you have played a big role in helping us secure promotion and can be a real help as we battle for the title. Enjoy the game.

Full credit to the players: they have found real consistency this year, which is testament to the hard work they put in on the training pitch. We have some real leaders in the squad - ability alone is never enough, you need to also have character. We have a dressing room full of people like that, and the work ethic is clear to see.

I know as manager I can trust my players to give everything, every day, and with that you always have a chance of winning games. We have a really focused bunch of players, and they know the standards which need to be maintained.

Gavin Baldwin Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to welcome the owners, supporters, players and staff of Blackpool.

Last weekend was even more special by being able to follow promotion with another wonderful night at the EFL Awards in London. We picked up prizes for on and off the pitch which we are very proud of. John Marquis was deservedly named Sky Bet League Two Player of the Season after his incredible campaign, with Darren boss for the Football Manager Team of the Year.

And Paul Mayfield reduced the room to tears when accepting the EFL Supporter of the Year award. Paul does so much around the club, and when he dedicated it to his late partner Jill there was not a dry eye in the house. I can think of no one more deserving than Paul. Enjoy the game.

Gavin

07 Chief Executives Comments

I would like to start by congratulating Darren Ferguson, the players and staff on securing promotion last weekend. The celebrations were well earned, but there is a real determination to go on and win the title. These notes were written before Friday’s game at Colchester, but do not expect any let up in the final games of the season.

We pride ourselves on being more than just a football club, and it was great to see Andy Butler named PFA Community Player of the Year. His commitment to helping out at the clubs incredible, you can regularly see him coaching our U12s down at the ground and he is always the first to put his hand up for player visits.

ROVERS FOUNDATION LADIES U13S go full season without tasting defeat

It is something special to go a full season without losing a game, something borderline impossible. That’s exactly what Rovers Foundation Ladies U13s have done, though – going through their full 20 game season without tasting defeat. In fact, the girls have only conceded two goals all season, scoring an impressive 120 themselves to secure the SHGCL Division 2 title. U13s manager, Jamie Thornton could not be prouder of his team’s efforts. He said: “This is my third season coaching and managing girls football but last season we lost a lot of players and had to regroup. We signed players from the local area and they all bonded straight away: not only as a football team but as great friends and I think that has been a really big factor in us going the full season without losing. “I think this is a massive achievement for any team and would just like to say on a personal note what a pleasure it has been for me to be part of this club and team. “Doncaster Rovers hav excellent training facilities and coaching so I would encourage any girls wanting to get involved in football to come down.” Next season sees the girls move up to 11v11, as they approach the open age. They hope to emulate the efforts of the Rovers Foundation Ladies, who themselves have had an impressive season. Jamie added: “The ladies reached the quarter-finals of the County Cup and the semi-finals of the League Cup - another great season for a newly formed team.” The three teams within the Rovers Foundation are looking to be expanded next season to allow more age groups to don the Rovers shirt. For more information or to show interest in signing for one of the age groups, contact Helen Tuck on 07969294662.

DONCASTER FOUNDATION PARTNER SCHOOLS tour the Keepmoat Stadium

Two Club Doncaster Foundation partner schools enjoyed the exclusive chance to tour the Keepmoat Stadium as part of their schools package. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary and West Road Primary were taken on a tour of the facilities, experiencing the first team changing rooms, dug out, press area and everything in between.

“It was amazing to get to see the facilities up close and even better that the players took time out of their busy schedules to spend so much time having photos, doing autographs and entertaining the children; it meant so much to them.” The day was wonderfully rounded up with a surprise visit from Doncaster Rovers first team players Alfie Beestin, Joe Wright and Mitchell Lund.

The stadium experience is part of the exclusive schools programme offered by Club Doncaster Foundation.

They then got in the Easter spirit and had the chance to explore the stands for treats on an ‘eggciting’ Easter egg hunt! Teacher Tom Rich said: “It was fantastic, the whole day was very well managed and the children loved the experience.

Schools co-ordinator Kelly Jackson said: “It’s fantastic to see the players so involved and engaging with the children, it really is the cherry on top of a great day. “The smiles on their faces is what it’s all about and the stadium experience is a great day for all involved.” To find out more information about the different programmes available, contact Kelly on kelly.jackson@clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk / 01302 764663.

The trio were on hand for photos and autographs as well as answering any burning questions. The players also showed off their skills as they challenged the children to a Kick Up competition.

FOUNDATION TOURNAMENT Children across the Doncaster Borough made the journey to the Keepmoat Stadium last week to compete in the annual Club Doncaster Foundation Year 3 and 4 tournament. More than 20 schools who are part of the PL Stars scheme, delivered by Club Doncaster Foundation coaches, entered a girls and boys team to fight for the chance to win the event.

10 Box Office: 01302 762576

Kirk Sandall Primary School won the boys’ event, and taking home the trophy for the girls was Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School. Schools Community co-ordinator Kelly Jackson organised the event and was delighted with how much the children enjoyed the afternoon. She said: “The joy on the children’s faces throughout the day whether they win or not makes all the hard work and planning worth it.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for the schools to get involved with and one of the great bonuses of getting a programme with us.” West Road Primary School teacher Tom Rich added: “The whole day was absolutely fantastic in terms of organisation and turn around but more importantly, the children loved every second. “The beauty of it is that although it’s nice to have friendly competition, they all love it regardless of who wins; it’s very child friendly.“ For more information about out Premier League stars community delivery or our schools packages, contact Kelly on kelly.jackson@clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk

DEFENDER

Andy BUTLER Andy Butler epitomises what Doncaster Rovers aspires to be. A leader on and off the pitch, he is as happy giving up his time inspiring youngsters as he is in the centre of the defence. The club captain’s efforts in the community earned him a trip to London last weekend, when he was named PFA Community Player of the Year.

12 Box Office: 01302 762576

Andy is always the first to put his hand up for player visits, meaning there cannot be many youngsters in the region who have not had a visit from him. He is also a regular at the Keepmoat Stadium in evenings, coaching Rovers’ U12 side and helping out with the Club Doncaster Foundation. “I really enjoy the community side of the club, it is a big thing for Doncaster Rovers and it means so much to give something back to a club which means a lot to me,” he says. “It’s not a lot really to ask, is it? It makes it worthwhile seeing the kids’ faces and knowing you’ve influenced them to better themselves.” Andy has been a leader on the pitch this season, scoring three times in his 42 appearances as Rovers sealed promotion back to Sky Bet League One. Last Saturday was a memorable day for everyone connected with the club, though Andy and his team-mates are determined to go on and claim the title. “I think you saw from our celebrations how much of a relief it was, and the emotion from

see this right through the club, right down to the Academy sides.”

“Everyone likes to do it in front of the home fans, and to be able to celebrate in front of them. We now want to go on and win the title so we can do it all again after the Exeter game.

Andy is serenaded by supporters as “one of our own” and he clearly loves playing for this football club.

“Promotion is one thing, but winning the league would be immense. There are not many chances in your career when you win a tiltle.”

And the three points came when Tommy Rowe flicked home from James Coppinger’s corner after 74 minutes. “We’d heard at half-time that Stevenage were losing heavily and that a point would have secured promotion, but we wanted to win the game as it was in our hands,” says Andy. “The players are not the kinds to hold out for a goalless draw. We are in pole position now and want to keep going. “We’ve got some real winners in the dressing room. The recruitment in the summer was fantastic with people like John Marquis, Frenchy, Matty Blair, Jordan Houghton and Niall Mason. “You need people to keep encouraging you to keep working hard, which again comes from the manager and his recruitment. You can

“I thought my chance to play for Rovers had been and gone, so I’m determined to enjoy every moment and put everything I can into helping the club succeed.” No one is thinking too far ahead – there are still three games left this season after today - but there is a confidence among the players that they can go on and compete at the higher level. The unity around the club is clear to see, whether it is at the training ground at Cantley Park, on the pitch or via the players’ social media. And with the owners‘ vision for Club Doncaster becoming reality, Andy is looking foraward to being part of a really exciting few years for Rovers. “I think we can do well in League One, I really do. I’ve watched a few League One games this season and think we are good enough to compete,” he adds. “I look at the teamsheets and I wouldn’t swap a single player. We’ve a lot of characters in there, with experience of people who have been there and done it. That gives me a lot of encouragement.”

13 Box Office: 01302 762576

Results elsewhere meant a point at home to Mansfield Town would have been enough to secure promotion, but the players wanted to go up in style by claiming a victory.

“I’m a local lad, I used to come and watch us at Belle Vue,” he says.

He made his first team debut a season later, coming on as a 25th minute substitution replacing Joe Murphy in a League Cup clash against Port Vale.

Oxford United was his next destination, where he spent a single season, he was part of the U’s side that were promoted to League One. He signed a one-year contract with Blackpool at the start of the 2016/17 campaign and the top stopper has an option to extend his deal by a further year.

Brad Potts, like defender Tom Aldred, began his career in Cumbria with Carlisle United. hH made his debut against Accrington Stanley in 2012. The Cumbrians were victorious that night and progressed to the Second Round of the League Cup after a 1-0 win at Brunton Park. During his first season with the club Potts made 31 appearances in all competitions before featuring 44 times the season after. The midfielder scored his first two goals for the club in the 2013/14 season – scoring the second goal against MK Dons in a 3-0 victory, before adding his second in a week against Bristol City in a 2-1 loss. Potts also made his international debut for England U19s in 2012. He joined Blackpool directly from Carlisle United in 2015.

Gary Bowyer’s playing career started when he signed for Hereford United in 1989, but he only stayed for one season with the Bulls. His next destination was Nottingham Forest where he spent five seasons, but he did not turn out in the Football League for the Reds before moving on to Rotherham United. After retiring from football, Bowyer became a first team coach at Ilkeston before landing his first managerial gig with Carshalton Athletic. He has also held academy roles at Derby County and Blackburn Rovers before being handed the full-time managerial position with the latter in 2015, after two short spells as caretaker boss. Bowyer was appointed the Blackpool manager on June 1 2016.

15 | TOM ALDRED

DEFENSIVE ROCK 26-year-old defensive rock Tom Aldred began his professional footballing career with Carlisle United in 2008, in his first season with the Cumbrians he was awarded League One’s Apprentice of the Year before winning the side’s youth team Player of the Year. During his two years with the club he was also sent out on loan to non-league side Workington, he returned to Carlisle at the end of the 2009/10 season and subsequently left the club for Watford.

The defender found his home at Stanley, making more than 85 league appearances during his two seasons at the club, before leaving to join the Tangerines – initially on loan and then on a permanent transfer two days later.

Forward Kyle Vassell has been on loan with eight different sides since 2016 to gain valuable first team experience. After brief spells with Brentford and Dover Athletic, Vassell signed for non-league side Sutton United in 2011, only staying for a season with the Conference South side before moving on once again. His first real break into the Football League was with Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough United, mainly due to his exceptional goal-scoring record at Bishop Stortford the season before. Vassell stayed with the club for three seasons, during that time he was loaned out to Dagenham & Redbridge, Oxford United and Shrewsbury Town before signing for the Seasiders in 2016.

During his time at the Bloomfield Road, Wellens achieved promotion to the Second Division in 2001 and won the League Trophy in 2002 and 2004.

16 Box Office: 01302 762576

At the end of the 2003/04 season he was included in the Football League Second Division PFA Team of the Year. He left in 2005 after making over 200 appearances for the Tangerines. Oldham started the game and caused a few problems early on which resulted in them taking the lead with a long range shot after five minutes which goalkeeper Louis Jones was disappointed not to save. The goal seemed to spark Rovers youngsters into life and they started to play with a greater tempo and more purpose to their play. Following some incisive attacking play and specifically good play between Jacob Fletcher and Morgan James, James was fouled allowing Fletcher to convert a

penalty for the second consecutive game, The rest of the half saw Rovers play some of their best football but failed to convert their dominance of possession into goals. The second half was a generally even affair and when

Kieran SCARFF

In addition to the wonderful scenes against Mansfield, it was great to see our Academy players and young players from our development centres enjoying the day along with so many of their parents and families. It is so important to us that our young players feel as though they are a big part of this club and its plans and it was great to see so many of them involved on the day.

By the time you read these notes our Under 12 Academy side will have represented the club by participating in the IBER Cup in Portugal. The squad were accompanied by Ben Mawson, Shane Pallett, Colin Broadhurst, Matt Ellison and Rick McGowan. I would like to place on record my thanks to them as without them these wonderful experiences and memories cannot be created for the youngsters. Our aim is that every age group should receive the opportunity to experience a trip/tournament every season. Good luck to the gaffer, the staff and players for today’s game.

45 Box Office: 01302 762576

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the gaffer, all the staff and players on achieving promotion with five games still to play. This is a magnificent achievement. Having seen first-hand the level of dedication, determination and preparation that has gone into every day of this season it is no surprise to see the levels this group has got to. Knowing them as I do they will not let the opportunity to win the league go either, this would cap off and fully reward an unforgettable season. The whole club certainly feels geared up to build on this season – don’t be surprised to see more excitement ahead!

EFL AWARDS

46

Rovers have picked up four prizes at the EFL Awards, with Darren Ferguson, Andy Butler, John Marquis and fan Paul Mayfield all recognised.

Butler was named PFA Community Player of the Year for his contribution to the Club Doncaster Academy and coaching our U12s, as well as player visits.

It capped a weekend of celebration for the club, who sealed promotion back to Sky Bet League One the day before the ceremony.

And one of the most moving moments in the evening say Rovers legend Paul Mayfield named EFL Supporter of the Year.

Box Office: 01302 762576

Ferguson was named boss of the Football Manager Team of the Season after guiding Rovers back to the third tier at the first attempt, to add to the Sky Bet League Two prize he had already won. Marquis was recognised for the 26 goals he has contributed towards that promotion, being crowned Sky Bet League Two Player of the Season.

Paul is much loved among Rovers fans, and drew on the club for support when his partner Jill passed away suddenly within days of being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 22- By John Coyle

50 Box Office: 01302 762576

The impending trip to Millmoor to face Rotherham United on Saturday 26th April 1947 was the talk of Doncaster. With a capacity of just over 20,000 demand for tickets far exceeded supply and Rovers could have shifted their allocation of around 4,500 several times over. The day of the match was also the day of the FA Cup Final between Burnley and Charlton Athletic but only one fixture was on the minds of fans in Rotherham and Doncaster. Rovers were unchanged for the third game in succession Line up: Archie Ferguson; Harry Tomlinson Bill Corbett; Cecil Stirland, Sid Bycroft, Bob McFarlane; Jackie Kirkaldie, Jackie Thompson, Clarrie Jordan, Paul Todd, Ralph Maddison.

Anyone amongst a crowd of over 17,000 expecting a carnival performance was to be disappointed, because Rovers were

distinctly below par. They were not helped by an injury to Thompson, who was reduced to a limping passenger on the wing. Nevertheless, goals by Kirkaldie and Jordan secured a 2-0 win. With Bycroft, Stirland and the full-backs

all having outstanding games in defence, Rovers showed another side to their normal attacking and free scoring game. Jordan’s goal was his 42nd of the season in the League and his 44th in all competitions, both club records. Rovers’ only challengers Rotherham United also won their Cecil STIRLAND match, beating Lincoln City 3-0, so a point was now needed from two remaining games. Neither Rovers nor Rotherham was in League action the following week, and the clubs met at Millmoor in the semi-final of the Sheffield County Cup.

Rovers fielded a number of reserves, Bert Squires, George Little, Frank Mitcheson, Leslie Owens and Jack Livesey all getting chances. Owens, playing at centre-forward, scored for Rovers but two goals from Hainsworth won the game for the Millers. Rovers suffered a blow when right-back Tomlinson was forced off with a leg injury.

As well as the satisfaction of winning their League and setting a new record, there was a tangible reward for the Rovers players. The club was granted £200 in “talent money,” effectively a bonus, and this was allocated based on the number of matches played. McFarlane and Maddison, who were the only ever-presents in the League side, were each awarded a bonus of £20. They could also look forward to receiving the Ralph MADDISON Championship Shield and individual medals at the home game against York City. JOHN COYLE

51 Box Office: 01302 762576

The injury forced Tomlinson to miss the important League fixture against Bradford City at Valley Parade on Saturday 24th May. Ernie Swallow deputised: otherwise Rovers fielded Ernie SWALLOW the team that had beaten Southport. Many Rovers fans travelled to Bradford, swelling the crowd to 15,631. City had only pride to play for but proved to be tough opponents and there were relatively few chances in a well-contested first half which ended goalless. The second half fell into a similar pattern, but it was Rovers who broke the deadlock after 75 minutes. Jordan, under pressure from a defender, found Kirkaldie on the right Sid and his low cross evaded BYCROFT several defenders but not

Maddison who was on hand to turn the ball in at the far post. Bradford threatened to equalise but with Bycroft in fine form they could not find a way through. The final whistle blew with Rovers 1-0 winners and confirmed as Division Three (North) Champions with a League record 71 points. They could still add to this in the final game, at home to York City, to be played in a fortnight’s time.

BELLES

It has been another successful international break for the Belles squad as three of Emma Coates’ side qualified for the Under-19 European Championship. Kirsty Hanson, who has impressed in her fledgling Belles career, started and bagged an assist in Scotland Under-19’s 2-1 victory over Republic of Ireland. And with a follow up win over Finland and results elsewhere working in their favour, Hanson’s team will compete in the European Championships in Northern Ireland in August.

52

Hanson’s side rounded of the week with a 5-0 drubbing of Ukraine to remain unbeaten throughout.

Box Office: 01302 762576

Joining Hanson in Northern Ireland will be Maz Pacheco and Sam Tierney as they helped the England Under-19s side to a 3-0 win over Turkey before seeing off Denmark by two goals to

Belles Youngsters ENJOY INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS nil. They will now join Scotland at the European Championship. Elsewhere, young keeper Bethan Davies earned a call up to the senior Wales squad for their double header against Northern Ireland. Davies was named on the bench as Jess Fishlock scored on her 100th Wales appearance in a 3-1 victory against Rachel Newborough’s Northern Ireland team. Newborough started in both games but Wales ran out 3-1 victors in each game. Rhiannon Roberts was also in attendance as she travelled with the Wales squad to continue her rehab as she works hard to get back from injury. Finally, Christie Murray enjoyed another call up to the senior Scotland squad as they played Belgium in a friendly.

Rovers Family Doncaster Rovers Supporters Club A good afternoon, and a warm welcome to the supporters of Blackpool who have made the trip over the M62 to the Keepmoat today, I hope they have a fantastic day with us apart from the result. The Seasiders should bring a good following to the game, as their fans would rather go to away games than go to Bloomfield Road, hopefully this will lead to a great atmosphere. It’s strange how the fixtures over Easter are exactly the same as last season, Colchester away Good Friday and Pool today.

54 Box Office: 01302 762576

With not many away games left, I can see demand being high for the Wycombe and Hartlepool trips. Buses to Wycombe leave Retford 9.25am, Harworth 9.35am, Bawtry/Rossington 9.45am, Punches 9.50am, Infirmary 10am and Keepmoat car park one 10.15am. Fares same as Colchester. Please book early. Our north Branch also run coaches to away games from Adwick, Carcroft, and the A19 corridor, please try them a try if you are in these areas.

Enjoy the game, support the team Rovers till we die Paul Mayfield

Viking Supporters Co-Operative Last month’s Meet the Owners event in the Legends Lounge at The Keepmoat was the latest in a long line of events at DRFC that show that fan engagement at DRFC is certainly very much in the DNA of the club.

I was blown away to be named the EFL Supporter of the Year last Sunday. I was truly honoured to be nominated and win the divisional award, after being put forward by hundreds of supporters. I was touched to win awards along with Andy Butler, John Marquis and Darren Ferguson.

The bi-annual Meet the Owners nights have always been well attended and (despite three relegations in the last five years and two failed takeover ids) in the main relatively enjoyable events where occasionally a golden nugget of information is given out by one of the top table and questions are asked by the fans that can result in changes by the club too.

The Retford Branch are holding their annual End of season Dinner and dance and “Away player of the Year award” on Friday 12th May , 7.30pm arrival for 8pm start, tickets are priced at £25, Inc. three- course meal and coffee - we will be putting on free transport from Doncaster and the surrounding villages and you don’t have to be a member to attend. Players and management from the club will be in attendance: you can pick up a form at the Supporters Club shop or at www.doncasterrovers-supportersclub.com or for any other information about the supporters club. Call Paul on 07961727769 for more information.

The concept of Meet the Owners, the formation of a Supporters’ Board, In Rovers We Trust, initial matchday atmosphere working groups which led the way for the creation of The Black Bank within the South Stand and catering working groups are merely the tip of the iceberg. Add to this the Supporters Club meetings scattered around our town where guest speakers or representatives from the club can be found in attendance, the work the Club Doncaster Foundation and Academy are doing in the Doncaster region communities and schools and there is a clear indication of how important growing the fan-base of DRFC is to the current owners, board and CEO.

If you live in the Retford, Harworth or Rossington areas, why not use the home match coach, so not to worry about parking and you can have a drink, the coach leaves Retford Kettlewells at 1pm, Harworth Pit gates 1.20pm and Rossington Styrupp/Labour Club 1.30pm - very cheap travel and no need to book.

Bizarrely, it was only at the start of this season that new rules were put in place that meant clubs HAD to engage in structured dialogue with their fans – why do some clubs need telling they have to do this – surely it is simply just good practise to do this? Or are we just lucky?

The club have season memberships on sale for next year. Under 18’s tickets are only £30, and you can pay in instalments, or you could save by joining the Supporters Club savings scheme - call Len on 01302 817347 for more details.

To join the supporters trust of DRFC email membership@drfc-vsc.co.uk, chairman@drfc-vsc.co.uk or secretary@drfc-vsc.co.uk or follow the links on Viking Chat. The VSC board
