Darren Ferguson Good evening and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Kevin Nolan, as well as the supporters, players and staff of Notts County.
We will try to keep our unbeaten home league run going to the end of the season, because we know if we do that would go a long way to winning promotion. We’ve just got to keep trying to beat the next team in front of us and not look too far ahead of that.
I’d like to thank Giovanni for his help on Saturday as part of Junior Takeover Day, while Oscar was a great junior player for us and Ethan’s questions as junior media manager were insightful. I didn’t get to meet everyone who joined us to help put on the matchday, but can see how much the players and staff enjoyed having them all around. Enjoy the game.
Your support was fantastic again on Saturday, and your backing and patience has helped us get to this position and will be key in our final 10 games.

Saturday’s win over Cheltenham Town was pleasing, and getting back to back clean sheets is vital at this stage in a season because we know we are always capable of creating chances. It was a professional performance against a well organised team who had not conceded in four games.
I spoke to Jordan Houghton last week, and he is feeling good after the operation on his knee injury. He has been a big part of the season for us, and we look forward to having him back up with us at some of the games towards the end of the season.

Gavin Baldwin Welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium for tonight’s game. I’d like to welcome the owners, fans, players and staff of Notts County. Saturday’s result was important for us as we chalk off games in search of promotion. We know matches at this point of the season can become a real battle, but our players are up for the fight and no one is taking anything for granted with 10 games to go.
We feel we have put together a package which offers great value for money for all, will help grow the fan base and rewards loyalty. Our aspiration is that a season ticket comes with enough benefits which mean if you take advantage of all of them you more than recoup the cost of your initial outlay. Look out for our events next Tuesday – you will be able to follow them all via our social media channels.
I would like to thank all our junior helpers who joined us on Saturday as part of our annual Junior Takeover Day. Everyone who works here agrees it is one of our favourite days of the season. Young Joseph spent the day with me, while we had youngsters doing our match announcements, preparing the pitch, posting selfies on our Twitter feed and helping give our pre-match team talk. We had more than 20 young people take on vital roles, and we hope to see them back at games as we head towards the end of the season. Enjoy the game
Gavin

By the time we gather back here for the visit of Plymouth Argyle in two weeks’ time, we will have announced our season ticket prices for next season.
Saturday saw the latest meeting of our Supporters Board. The fans who give up their time to talk to senior staff have really helped guide our thinking - from things as simple as adding shelves to concourses to ensure there is somewhere to put your drink to helping ensure our ticket strategy is fair to all fans.

Club Doncaster Foundation’s inaugural Fit Rovers course concludes this Thursday after eight weeks of hard work. The participants still get the chance to get together for a game of football though, through a brand new Fit Rovers Vets session held at the Keepmoat Stadium. Alongside the session will run a Retro Rovers walking football session and the second course of Fit Rovers, all starting on Thursday the 23rd of March. Community officer for health and wellbeing, Nick Gillott, is delighted with the new sessions and hopes that running all three next to each other will cater for everyone. He said: “This is a perfect opportunity to get everyone together. They’ll all be on the biggest astroturf here at the Keepmoat so if players want they can try their hand at more than one session. “I think it will work really well because there’s three different intensities all going on at once, creating a tailored session for everyone’s ability.” The trio of events kicks off at 7pm on Thursday the 23rd of March 7-9pm and will run every week, open to anyone interested. One of the three sections on the astro will be the second course of Fit Rovers, which only has a few places remaining but is still open for sign ups. The sessions consist of an interactive workshop looking at managing portion sizes and making healthy but tasty food followed by an exercise session tailored to the needs of every individual. One session a week for eight weeks is included in the course, as well as incentives such as sports wear, Doncaster Rovers player visits and money off match shirts. Unlike big fitness/weight-loss chains that charge you for public weigh-ins and give very little guidance, information at Fit Rovers is completely confidential meaning you can keep a track of exactly how you’re doing on a 1-to-1 basis with the staff. At the half way-point, the first course had lost a combined eight stone, an incredible achievement in just four weeks, so it is hoped that can be emulated for the second course. “We as a Foundation want to make sure that we have excellent links between all our key areas and the partnership does just that for Education and Health and Wellbeing.
Will Biggs, sports lecturer at Club Doncaster Sports College, was delighted with their progress.
“Here at Club Doncaster Sports College we pride ourselves as offering academic qualifications, which lead to opportunities in sport, both parties have expressed how positive they found the experience and as a result of this college unit many students now are looking to develop a career in youth coaching, which is fantastic.” As well as excellent coaching from the Sports College students, the young learners who participated in the session also had a tour of the Keepmoat Stadium and the opportunity to win a pair of brand new football boots.

Niall MASON Beckham, Zidane, Mason: Real Madrid’s training ground has seen some of the world’s top players pass through its doors, and Rovers can claim some of the benefits of the Galactico-producing youth system in Niall Mason. Niall’s accent gives away his London roots, but globetrotting parents meant part of his childhood was spent in Spain and Qatar – and it was in the former where going on a course in a school holiday led to him rub shoulders with names like Beckham and Zidane. “It was a bit crazy. When I was younger I used to support

holidays when we lived in Spain,” says Niall. “One of the scouts there recommended me to the Real Madrid Foundation, the equivalent to the Club Doncaster Foundation, and from there a scout from the Academy saw me and then I was training with them.” That was a remarkable achievement for a seven-year-old. And he was not the only Englishman on Real’s books at the time – with a certain Galactico by the name of David Beckham also there. While it could not be said the pair were team-mates or hung out together, the more senior of the English duo did make an effort to speak to Niall and see how he was doing. “He took an interest in me because he thought it pretty cool a young English kid – from seven to 12 I was there – was out there in Spain and living in digs. I think he found that quite interesting,” says Niall. “Both Zinedine Zidane’s sons were in there. Enzo was a year older than me, but I trained a year above as I was a bit

Former Rovers keeper Adam Collin signed for the Magpies at the beginning of the 2015/16 season, after leaving Rotherham United. In his first two season’s as a professional, Collin signed for three different clubs, he began with Newcastle United before heading out on loan to Oldham Athletic and Doncaster Rovers respectively. But Collin never managed a first team appearance with any of the sides, before leaving to join non-league side Workington AFC in 2004.

He would go on to stay in Cumbria for five years, it would see him save three penalties in a shootout against Farsley Celtic as Workington were promoted to the Conference North.

Collin has also played for Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen (on loan), Sky Bet League Two side Carlisle United and Sky Bet Championship side Rotherham United.

Another vastly-experienced footballer in the form of Alan Smith, he was part of the Leeds United side that took Europe by storm in 2001 but he was shown his marching orders in the semi-final against Valencia. After establishing himself as a first player, Smith was rewarded with the Supporters Player of the Season award two years running (2003 & 2004), which was the first time a player had won it back-to- back in the club’s history. Leeds United were relegated from the Premier League in 2004, which signalled the end of his time at Elland Road, as he moved to rivals Manchester United for £7million. During his three seasons at United, Smith went on to win the League Cup, seeing off Wigan Athletic by four goals to nil. He won one Premier League title with the Red Devils in his final season at Old Trafford before joining Newcastle United. Smith has also played for MK Dons before signing on a permanent for Notts County in 2014.
MIDFIELD MAESTRO
04 | ALAN SMITH
Former Premier League footballer Kevin Nolan was appointed player/manager of Notts County at the start of the 2017, after former manager John Sheridan was relieved of his duties. Nolan started with Bolton Wanderers in 1999 after progressing through the Trotters’ youth academy to earn a professional contract, he was part of the side that achieved promotion to the Premier League after seeing off rivals Preston North End in 2001. He became a first team regular at the Reebok Stadium, which would see him help Bolton qualify for the UEFA Cup at the end of the 2005/06 season, the club reached the last 32 of the competition the following season. Nolan was appointed captain after the departure of team mate Jay-Jay Okocha, one of the highlights of his debut season as captain was his assist that gave Bolton a creditable draw away at German giants Bayern Munich. Later on in his career he played for Newcastle United, where he would achieve automatic promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 09/10 season cracking the Championship again with West Ham United in his debut season. Nolan first dipped his toe into management with Leyton Orient at the start of 2016, winning 46% of his games in charge.
18 | ELLIOT HEWITT
DEFENSIVE ROCK Twenty-two-year-old Welsh centre back Elliot Hewitt signed his professional contract with Cheshire-based side Macclesfield Town in 2010, but did not make his first team debut until the final game of the 2010/11 season. Starting at right-back in a 1-1 draw against Hereford United at Moss Rose, a season later he was chosen as the team’s first choice right-back for the Silkmen. He decided to leave Macclesfield at the end of that season, going on to join Ipswich Town on a three-year contract.
The defender has also played for the Welsh national side on 10 occasions at U21s level.

Originally from Huddersfield, West Yokshire, Jon Stead began his career at the John Smith’s Stadium in 2002, after coming through the Terriers’ youth academy. During his two year spell with the side, Stead would go on to make over 70 appearances before leaving to join former-Premier League champions Blackburn Rovers in 2004. He found the net on his debut in a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough, his goals that season helped Rovers survive relegation from the Premier League. After a singular season at Ewood Park, Stead joined Sunderland for £1.8million, but things did not go to plan as the forward found himself out on loan to Derby County in his second season at the Stadium of Light. Stead would go onto play for a handful of Football League clubs, including Bradford City, Ipswich Town and Oldham Athletic. He signed for the Magpies at the start of the 2015/16 season.

He moved on a full transfer to Wycombe Wanderers, it was his second seasons with the Chairboys where he really found his shooting boots, as he found the net 22 times in 42 league appearances, Tyson would go onto join Nottingham Forest on a permanent deal after a short loan spell. Tyson won promotion to the Championship at the end of the 2007/08 season after finishing runners-up in League One, the striker would also go onto play for Blackpool, Forest rivals, Derby County and visitors Notts County. In his first season with Doncaster Rovers, Tyson was awarded Rovers’ Player of the Season after some impressive performances over the 2014/15 season.
Tom KEETLEY
LEGEND, WHERE ARE THEY NOW
It’s fair to say that Thomas Keetley is a legend for both Doncaster Rovers and Notts County, the former centre forward signed for Rovers in 1923 after a spell with Bradford Park Avenue. Over a six-year stint with Rovers at Belle Vue, during that time period another three members of the Keetley family joined the side, brothers Harold, Joe and Frank became part of the Rovers family. Keetley made 231 league appearances for Rovers scoring 180 goals for the side, his final season (1928/29) was his most prolific, scoring 40 goals in 32 league appearances. His next move was to Notts County for £750, where he scored a hat-trick on his league debut in a 3-1 win over Bristol City. The forward holds two records for the Magpies, scoring the most league goals in one season (39 goals in 34 league games) and 10 hat-tricks in four seasons. He would also go onto play for Lincoln City, Gresley Rovers and Heanor Town.

Unfortunately, due to a waterlogged pitch, last week’s youth team game away at Rotherham was postponed. Paul Stancliffe and John Schofield took the opportunity to put on an additional coaching session – making the most of the opportunity to work closely with next year’s youth team squad. The game has been re-arranged for Good Friday with an 11 am kick off. ROVERS XI | Leverton, Walker, Barker, Dunnet, Amos, Fletcher, James, Prior, Overton, Henderson, Morris. BENCH | Gooden, Scattergood, Bingley
Kieran SCARFF I am delighted to announce that Louis Jones, our second year apprentice goalkeeper has been offered his first professional deal with the football club. Louis has shown undoubted potential and a great attitude to work under the watchful eye of Paul Gerrard, Paul Stancliffe, John Schofield and myself.
As with all young players who achieve the recognition Louis has, it is always important to recognise the range of staff who have played a part in their development through their time in the
Louis becomes the third of our second year apprentices to receive a professional contract. This commitment to the continued development of our young players clearly highlights the emphasis the owners, directors, the manager and his staff place upon the development of players through our academy programme. I will never tire of being extremely appreciative of this level of support. It is an exciting time for young players and staff to be part of this football club. The opportunities are real and this news is further evidence of this. Good Luck to the gaffer, his staff and the players.

Having joined the club at the age of 12 years old the commitment of both Louis, his parents and his wider family to his development has been crucial to getting to this stage of his career. Louis has a clear and quiet determination to succeed and it’s great to see him being deservedly rewarded for his efforts and the potential he consistently displays. He should be very proud to have achieved this and we all look forward to his future development.

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 19 - By John Coyle
50
Despite the restrictions placed on midweek football, the busy Easter programme was allowed to proceed as planned. In those days there was little rest for players and supporters alike, with three games in the space of four days, only Sunday being a day of rest. Rovers would face Oldham Athletic and Crewe Alexandra at home within the space of 24 hours and then would travel to Oldham on Easter Monday.
Box Office: 01302 762576
Mindful of the heavy programme facing his charges, manager Jackie Bestall took the squad to Skegness for a few days of training allied to relaxation. While there he suffered a blow with goalkeeper Archie Ferguson succumbing to tonsillitis. Bill Lambton, who hailed from Archie Nottingham, had been FERGUSON signed from Exeter City in September and had been a regular in the Midland League XI but would make his League debut in an otherwise unchanged side on Good Friday. Line up: Bill Lambton; Harry Tomlinson Bill Corbett; Cecil Stirland, Sid Bycroft, Bob McFarlane; Jackie Kirkaldie, Jackie Thompson, Clarrie Jordan, Paul Todd, Ralph Maddison.
A season’s-best crowd of 25,366 filed into Belle Vue but witnessed a Rovers team well short of their best. Oldham took the lead when their winger Tomlinson had an effort helped in by Corbett and doubled their advantage in the second half via Burns. With 15 minutes to play a shock reverse looked to be on the Jackie THOMSON cards, but two goals from Thompson, and others from Kirkaldie and Jordan secured a remarkable turnaround and Rovers ran out 4-2 winners. A day later they were back in action again, though in front of a smaller crowd, with Crewe the visitors. The game was played in strong wind and rain and this made flowing football difficult. Rovers led through Kirkaldie but Ferris levelled for Crewe. Rovers created plenty of chances in the Jackie KIRKALDIE second half but were frustrated by a combination of poor finishing and the solid work of Crewe goalkeeper Poskitt and his defence. So Rovers had to settle with only three points from their two home games.
On Monday they travelled to Boundary Park, Oldham and perhaps because of the strain of the Easter programme Bestall made outfield changes for the first time in 11 games. Leslie Owens replaced Thompson, who had a sore ankle, while Jim Wooldridge stood in for Corbett at left-back. Lambton, who had endured a nervy debut on Friday but fared better on Saturday, kept his place.
Jim WOOLDRIDGE
Again the game was marred by a strong wind and Rovers lacked fluency. Indeed, they were outplayed for much of the game with Lambton having to rescue them on more Bill LAMBTON than one occasion. Rovers took the lead during the first half when Hurst brought Clarrie down Jordan right on the JORDAN edge of the area. Todd took
The second half became rather a tame affair and Rovers held on to complete a gritty but important 1-0 victory. Division Three (North) was now essentially a two horse race, with Rovers twelve points clear of their only challengers, Rotherham United, after the Easter games. Rotherham had lost at Southport on Good Friday, but had then recorded wins over Halifax Town and Southport, so they had actually lost a little ground on Rovers. They did, though, have the advantage of three games in hand over their Yorkshire rivals and crucially the two teams would still have to meet later in April at Millmoor. There Rotherham had still to drop a point, and that game would offer Rovers a significant challenge.

the kick and fired the ball directly into the net, a superb finish that left the home goalkeeper Schofield flat footed.

BELLES
Emma Coates has moved quickly to bolster her goalkeeping options by bringing in former London Bees stopper Bethan Davies and Welsh international keeper Nicky Davies. 19-year-old Bethan has been training with the Belles and has impressed Coates and goalkeeping coach Nick Dingwall during her first few weeks. And the Wales Under-19 international has been rewarded with a deal at the club. Despite her young age, Davies has experience at WSL level and was in goal for London Bees during their famous Continental Tyres Cup penalty shootout victory over WSL 1 side Chelsea.

With the coaching she’s going to get here and the programme we provide, she’s in a great position to be able compete for that first team shirt.
Box Office: 01302 762576
Former Liverpool and Chelsea keeper, Nicky Davies, re-joins the club for her second spell at the Keepmoat Stadium.
“Her long term goals are to get into the Wales senior set up regularly and we can hopefully help her try and achieve her aims.
The 31-year-old originally enjoyed a spell at the club between 2013 and 2014 before making the move to Reading.
“She’s been playing WPL football since moving up north to university and now she’s ready for that next challenge of getting back into the WSL.”
On the double swoop, Head Coach Emma Coates said: “It was a no brainer when Nicky got in contact with me to bring her back to the club.

Viking Supporters Co-Operative Last month’s Meet the Owners event in the Legends‘ Lounge at the Keepmoat Stadium was the latest in a long line of events at DRFC that show that fan engagement at DRFC is certainly very much in the DNA of the club. The bi-annual Meet the Owners nights have always been well attended and (despite three relegations in the past five years and two failed takeover bids) in the main relatively enjoyable events where occasionally a golden nugget of information is given out by one of the top table and questions are asked by the fans that can result in changes by the club too. The concept of Meet the Owners, the formation of a Supporters’ Board, In Rovers We Trust, initial matchday atmosphere working groups which led the way for the creation of The Black Bank within the South Stand and catering working groups are merely the tip of the iceberg. Add to this the Supporters Club meetings scattered around our town where guest speakers or representatives from the club can be found in attendance, the work the Club Doncaster Foundation and Academy are doing in the Doncaster region communities and schools and there is a clear indication of how important growing the fan-ase of DRFC is to the current owners, board and CEO. Bizarrely, it was only at the start of this season that new rules were put in place that meant clubs HAD to engage in structured dialogue with their fans – why do some clubs need telling they have to do this – surely it is simply just good practise to do this? Or are we just lucky? To join the supporters trust of DRFC email membership@drfc-vsc.co.uk, chairman@drfc-vsc.co.uk or secretary@drfc-vsc.co.uk or follow the links on Viking Chat. The VSC board
