Darren Ferguson impressive in both those games. They have real energy and a front two who are a real handful, but we know every game at this point in the season is going to be tough.

Last Saturday’s draw at Crawley was frustrating because I don’t think we played badly, we just came up against a keeper who would not be beaten. Had we converted one of our changes in the first half we would probably have gone on and won comfortably, but four points from two tough away games leaves us in a good place going into two fixtures at home. We have to keep working hard to maintain our average of two points per game, which we are confident would be enough to secure a successful season.

As supporters, you have been brilliant with us this season. You have backed us in numbers at away games, got behind us and been patient when neccesary. You have a big role in helping us in these final games of the season.

With no midweek fixture we have also been able to get some rest into the players, have a few light sessions earlier in the week and freshen them up.

Today is our Junior Takeover Day, and I look forward to working with young Giovanni who is going to be joining me as junior first-team manager. This is a unique part of Club Doncaster, and I hope Giovanni and all the youngsters who are helping us stage a matchday today have a memorable day. Enjoy the game.

Cheltenham are a really good side and will provide a real test today. I watched them against Luton Town and Carlisle United recently and they were very

Gavin Baldwin Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium for the visit of Cheltenham Town. I’d like to welcome the directors, fans, players and staff of the visitors and wish them a safe trip home after the game. Today marks the start of two home games in quick succession, and your backing can make a real difference.

Our home form this season has been fantastic, and with six of our 11 remaining games of the season taking place right here we know that maintaining that – and hopefully completing the campaign without a home league defeat – would set us up for the promotion we aspire to achieve. This week we confirmed our pre-season trip to Thailand will take place in the

I have already visited Bangkok, along with our head of commercial Andrew Whitham, and am confident we will be able to put together a trip to remember for players and fans alike. I’d also like to congratulate the Dons, Club Doncaster’s rugby league side, whose first two home games of the season have brought wins – over Myton Warriors in the Challenge Cup and Coventry Bears in Kingstone Press League One. They have a few tough away games to come, but I am sure they will build on these victories. Enjoy the game.

summer of 2018. We had originally looked to make the trip this summer, but putting it back a year means we can make sure all our footballing requirements are met. It also means we can offer a greater range of packages for supporters.

Today’s game against Cheltenham Town marks our annual Junior Takeover Day, allowing children across the Doncaster Borough the once in a lifetime opportunity to assist match day staff. As part of Club Doncaster Foundation’s exclusive coaching and engagement package offered to partner schools, children have the chance to apply for a range of roles including groundsman, community coach and even a first team player. They will then shadow their selected professional during the build up and receive a complimentary ticket to stay for the match too including an extra ticket for an adult accompanying them for the day. Community co-ordinator, Heather King is excited for the day after a very successful event last year. She said:“The kids all love Junior Takeover Day; it brings them closer to the action than they would have every dreamed and lets them experience something unforgettable.” “Because there’s so many different roles that they can apply for, it caters for everyone’s interests and aspirations and the experience is a wonderful motivation for them. “Last year was a huge success and this year we hope to emulate it and make sure all the children and their parents/guardians have a brilliant day.” Junior Takeover Day is just one of the many exclusive opportunities for Club Doncaster Foundation partner schools. ALCOCK

Craig

Craig ALCOCK MIDFIELD DYNAMO The Royal Marines’ loss is Doncaster Rovers’ gain. Craig Alcock left school with the intention of following his father’s footsteps and serving in the military. Fate intervened, though, and the opportunity to join Yeovil Town’s part-time youth team while studying at sixth form eventually lured him into professional football. The 29-year-old from Truro does not have the normal footballer’s background of years in an academy system, but did enough to catch the eye of then Glovers boss Gary Johnson – now in charge of today’s opponents Cheltenham Town – to find himself mixing with the first-team at Huish Park.

football, when I finished college. Being an officer in the Marines was the first thing I wanted to be, my dad was in the Navy so I wanted to follow in his footsteps, and it was when I was 18 or 19 I ended up going into football,” he says. “I wasn’t with any club as a schoolboy - I was at sixth form and joined Yeovil Town. We didn’t have an academy, just a schoolboy side which trained once a week on Thursday and played on Saturday. I was fortunate enough that Gary Johnson, who was manager at the time, gave me a chance. “He brought me in a couple of times to training to mix with the first-team. I wasn’t with them as much as I’d have liked, but Gary was brilliant for Yeovil and I have a lot of respect for what he did with them.” While Alcock’s professional career may have ended his hopes of serving in Her Majesty’s Naval Service, he still hopes to find a route into something similar when he hangs up his boots. “I’m probably a bit old for it, but I certainly want to keep active and I’d hate to be kept indoors,” he says. “So I could join the police or Territorial Army, or something

TOP STOPPER

01 | SCOTT BROWN

Top stopper Scott Brown came through the youth structure at Wycombe Wanderers, but he failed to make a single appearance for the Chairboys, after signing his professional deal. He left to join League of Wales side Welshpool Town in 2003, only spending a season with the Lilywhites before moving back to England to sign for Bristol City. Brown could not force his way into the starting XI at Ashton Gate and found himself on the move once again, his next port of call would be Cheltenham Town.

14 Box Office: 01302 762576

The keeper spent nine years at Whodden Road, pulling on the Cheltenham jersey over 250 times before heading up to Scotland to join Aberdeen in 2014. He made his debut for the Dons in a 4-0 win against Livingston in a Scottish League Cup fixture, he became an important part of the sides League campaign, which saw them comfortably qualify for the Europa League. Brown returned to Wycombe at the beginning of the 2016/17 season but was sent out on loan a few months after his arrival, heading to non-league side Eastleigh and now of Sky Bet League Two side Cheltenham Town.

1 3

Midfield maestro Kyle Storer spent the early part of his youth days playing for Leicester City before being released by the club in 2003. Storer joined non-league side Bedworth Town at the start of the 2003/04 season, where he spent a singular season before moving onto Tamworth. He was loaned out to fellow non-league side Hinkley United in 2005 before returning to Tamworth, Storer became a pivotal player in the midfield for the Lambs, before joining his former loan side Hinkley a few seasons later. After spending a few seasons at a handful of clubs in the lower leagues of English football, Storer found himself playing for Kidderminster Harries. During his four seasons at the club he made over 120 appearances and found the net on more than 15 occasions, his next destination was north Welsh side Wrexham. He only spent a season with the Dragons before signing on the dotted line with Cheltenham at the start of the 2015/16 season.

MIDFIELD MAESTRO

04 | KYLE STORER

Cheltenham Town manager Gary Johnson was appointed Robins manager towards the end of the 2014/15 season, the club did not survive relegation that season despite Johnson’s best efforts. He was granted more time at Whaddon Road and he duly delivered, as his side were promoted as champions to Sky Bet League Two, at the first time of asking. During his early years of management Johnson plied his trade with Cambridge United, Kettering Town, Latvia and non-league side Newmarket Town before joining Yeovil Town in 2001. In his first season at Huish Park, Johnson was an instant hit, winning the FA Trophy Vase before achieving promotion to the Football League as champions. He went on to lead the Glovers to promotion once again two seasons later before leaving to join Bristol City in 2005. The 61-year-old continued to add trophies to his ever-growing cabinet, achieving promotion from League One with Bristol City, and later on with Yeovil Town on his return to the club.

05 | AARON DOWNES

DEFENSIVE ROCK Australian-born defender Aaron Downes began his career in England after emigrating in 2003, he spent two seasons with non-league side Hampton & Richmond and Frickley Athletic before signing for Chesterfield in 2004. In his third season with the Spirerites he was rewarded with a new contract and he was also handed the captain’s armband after the previous holder Mark Allott joined Oldham Athletic. He was an integral part of the Chesterfield defence before leaving to join south coast Torquay United in 2012.

The defensive rock became Gary Johnson’s first signing of his reign at Whaddon Road, although a knew injury kept him out for a large part of the 2015/16 season, Downes also lead the side back to the Football League.

2 4

Originally from Norwich, Wright began his footballing career with nearby Dereham Town of the East Counties Football League and transferred to Histon on deadline day. The deadly striker produced a moment of magic, when his goal knocked out Football League side Swindon Town in one of the shocks of the FA Cup that season. He joined at-the-time Conference Premier League side Cambridge United, Wright was the top scorer for the U’s in his first and only season before joining Wrexham. The forward scored in each of the two legs as the Dragon’s reached the FA Trophy final, he played the whole game and even managed to score a penalty as Wrexham dispatched fellow Conference Side on penalties at Wembley. He has also played for Forest Green Rovers, Gateshead and Kidderminster Harriers before signing for Gary Johnson’s Cheltenham Town at the beginning of the 2015/16 season.

Brooker played for both Cheltenham Town and Doncaster Rovers during 2008, before signing for the latter on a permanent in 2009. He left two seasons later for non-league Buxton, he would end his career with the Bucks.

Neil GRAYSON

LEGEND, WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Neil Grayson began his life as a footballer with non-league side Rowntree Mackintosh, where he scored 27 goals in 44 appearances, which earned him a moved to Doncaster Rovers. He spent a singular season at Belle Vue, which saw him find the back of the net on six occasions before moving onto Boston United, Chesterfield, Gateshead and York City in the space of a three year window. During his time at Northampton, he became a record holder, scoring the fastest hat-trick in the Cobblers’ history - against Hartlepool. He also helped the side win promotion from Division Three via the play-offs. Grayson joined Cheltenham in 1998, and would go on to spend four seasons with the club. Hello everyone, Welcome to our Junior Takeover Day as we take on Cheltenham Town. It is fantastic having you all with us taking on jobs with our grounds team, announcer, first team manager etc. I have done my own takeover, check my photos out! I always have lots of fun and with only 5 home games left after today we have to keep making lots of noise for the lads. I had to close my eyes with the win down in Cambridge, but I soon jumped for joy at the final whistle in my kennel. Don’t forget next Tuesday we are back home again against Notts County – come on you Reds!

IThe games themselves were excellent exercises as we look towards next year’s youth team group and further developing their understanding of our expectations at this level.

Again there were a lot of positives from the game with some excellent performances from our U16 players, while Danny Amos gave a very assured performance and James Morris continued his recent run of goals with two more. In addition it was great to see a very composed performance from one of our U15 prospects for the final 30 minutes of the game. Kieran SCARFF I am very much enjoying the ever strengthening link between the Academy and the Club Doncaster Sports College. The basis of this link will be a much more visible process of their U18 college side being a formal shadow squad at youth team level. This process will see myself, Paul Stancliffe and John Schofield take the college squad’s coaching sessions on a regular basis to ensure we develop relationships and an understanding of the potential within the college squad.

This is another positive example of the opportunities that can be provided and supported across the company. Both Tim and Adi Turnpenny (Sports College Principal) have been excellent to work with and we are all looking forward to pushing this partnership further forward and providing wider opportunities for players in both squads. Good luck to the gaffer, staff and players in today’s game

23 Box Office: 01302 762576

I fully expect this to create opportunities for players. In addition, Tim Ryan (who coaches the college side) will observe

and support the coaching of our youth team players on a frequent basis to ensure he is fully aware of the standard of player in front of the shadow squad.

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 18 - By John Coyle

50 Box Office: 01302 762576

The thaw that flooded the pitch at Boothferry Park had spread to Doncaster with some unfortunate consequences. Hexthorpe Flatts were left under two feet of water while residents in Toll Bar found themselves cut off by rising floods. The War Office dispatched two amphibious vehicles to Doncaster to ferry people to safety. Spectators arriving at Rovers’ home fixture with Gateshead on Saturday 22nd March were greeted by a pitch no longer covered in snow but lush and green, albeit soft underfoot. Rovers were unchanged for an eighth successive game. Line up: Archie Ferguson; Harry Tomlinson Bill Corbett; Cecil Stirland, Sid Bycroft, Bob McFarlane; Jackie Kirkaldie, Jackie Thompson, Clarrie Jordan, Paul Todd, Ralph Maddison.

A crowd of 15,481 saw early chances at both ends as first Jordan and then McCormack of Gateshead shot wide when well placed. Rovers took the lead after 19 minutes when Maddison crossed, Jordan flicked on and

Thompson fired past Dawson. A minute later Rovers had doubled their lead with their 100th League goal of the campaign. Jordan latched onto a ball from Maddison and beat Jackie THOMSON McDougall before firing into the corner of the net. On 38 minutes Jordan scored his second and Rovers’ third, finishing emphatically after good interplay between Todd and Kirkaldie. Rovers led 3-0 at the break and rather disappointed their followers in the second Clarrie half by failing to turn their JORDAN clear advantage into further goals. The closest they came was when Kirkaldie had a shot cleared off the line by Bell. Rotherham, who played their first match for a month, also won so Rovers’ lead remained at eleven points. There was an unpleasant incident after the game as the players left the pitch. The crowd swarmed around the home tunnel, hoping to applaud their heroes. A wall was knocked over and the referee, Mr Porter, and a ten year old boy suffered injuries that required hospital treatment. Others including Maddison and Stirland suffered minor injuries from

the falling brickwork. Although the incident was reported to the FA no action was taken other than the wall being rebuilt.

The Division Three (North) table made good reading for Rovers fans after the win at Hartlepool. Rovers had 57 points from 32 games, meaning they had dropped only seven points all season. Their only realistic challengers were local rivals Rotherham United, who had 46 points from 29. Like Rovers they had carried on where they left off after being thwarted by the icy weather, and their 4-0 win over Carlisle United was their fifth in succession. The busy Easter programme was coming up, and with all teams playing three games in four days, it promised to be of great importance.

51 Box Office: 01302 762576

A week later Rovers took on another team from the north-east, travelling to Victoria Park to face Hartlepools United. Again Sid Rovers were unchanged BYCROFT as they sought a ninth win in succession. They found their opponents in lively form and Hartlepools enjoyed much of the possession, but with Bycroft marshalling the defence superbly, the visitors were seldom troubled. Rovers took the lead after 35 minutes with a superbly crafted goal. Kirkaldie’s Jackie KIRKALDIE pass sent Jordan away down the right flank. He cut inside, beat the full-back and drew goalkeeper Heywood out of position before sending over a delicate lob which was finished off in style by Todd. Rovers led 1-0 at the interval and doubled their Paul advantage during the TODD second half. Some

delightful interplay between Todd and Thompson set up Jordan who placed the ball into the home net in clinical fashion. Rovers had indeed secured their ninth win on the bounce.

BELLES

The Belles put in a hard fought display as they beat local rivals Sheffield FC to progress into the fifth round of the FA Women's Cup and earn a trip to Chelsea. One goal was enough for the Belles to secure victory over Sheffield and that was thanks to Courtney Sweetman-Kirk's penalty. This was the Belles first competitive game of 2017 after reaching the fourth round due to receiving a walkover after Watford Ladies conceded the tie. Emma Coates' side were on top from the off with Sophie Barker and Kirsty Hanson testing Sheffield keeper Juliana Draycott.

52 Box Office: 01302 762576

The Belles continued to turn the screw and were able to unlock the defence time after time with striker Courtney Sweetman-Kirk going close on several occasions. The striker being judged to have pushed a Sheffield defender before heading into the net. It was in controversial fashion that the Belles took the lead. A floated cross caused a collision between two players with the Sheffield defender accused of handling the ball deliberately. Referee Law Bik Chi had no hesitation and pointed to the spot. Sweetman-Kirk stood up and slotted her penalty past Draycott. Sheffield worked relentlessly to find an equaliser before half time but the Belles kept them at bay, forcing the home side to shoot from range.

Belles beat local rivals Sheffield FC TO PROGRESS

Belles started the brighter of the two in the second half in which saw chances for either side few and far between. Hanson continued to impress on her Belles bow, but she could only fire high and wide. Sheffield went close with two efforts from Ellie Gilliatt who endeavoured on two mazy runs but the returning Nicky Davies was able to keep her out twice. The Welsh keeper was called into action again with Natasha Flint prodding towards goal but the Belles’ new keeper was down low to smother her attempt. Former Sheffield player Barker had the chance to wrap up the game late on but for a brilliant challenge from Carla Ward, before Sweetman-Kirk failed to put the game to bed after Draycott was caught up field following a corner. A professional second half from Emma Coates’ side who dug in to book a place in the FA Women's Cup fifth round. Fifth round draw: Notts County Ladies vs Yeovil Town Ladies Liverpool Ladies vs Everton Ladies Arsenal Ladies vs Tottenham Hotspur Ladies Sunderland Ladies vs Aston Villa Ladies Birmingham City Ladies vs West Bromwich Albion Women Bristol City Women vs Millwall Lionesses Manchester City Women vs Reading FC Women Chelsea Ladies vs Doncaster Rovers Belles

Doncaster Rovers Supporters Club Good afternoon, and a warm welcome to all the Cheltenham Town fans who have made the long journey up from Gloucestershire for today’s game. Let’s hope for a victory, after two home draws to keep the promotion charge going hope they have an enjoyable day with us. or call into the shop situated in the Club Doncaster Academy (away end).

We had a fantastic victory down at Cambridge 3-2, but, like the Stevenage game, we were left hanging on at the end, credit to the 410 Rovers fans who made the trip, on a Tuesday night, loud and proud. I hope the 90 or so fans who went on the weekend trip to Eastbourne for the Crawley, had a fantastic time, despite the weather.

Viking Supporters Co-Operative Last month’s Meet the Owners event in the Legends‘ Lounge at the Keepmoat Stadium was the latest in a long line of events at DRFC that show that fan engagement at DRFC is certainly very much in the DNA of the club. The bi-annual Meet the Owners nights have always been well attended and (despite three relegations in the past five years and two failed takeover bids) in the main relatively enjoyable events where occasionally a golden nugget of information is given out by one of the top table and questions are asked by the fans that can result in changes by the club too. The concept of Meet the Owners, the formation of a Supporters’ Board, In Rovers We Trust, initial matchday atmosphere working groups which led the way for the creation of The Black Bank within the South Stand and catering working groups are merely the tip of the iceberg. Add to this the Supporters Club meetings scattered around our town where guest speakers or representatives from the club can be found in attendance, the work the Club Doncaster Foundation and Academy are doing in the Doncaster region communities and schools and there is a clear indication of how important growing the fan-ase of DRFC is to the current owners, board and CEO. Bizarrely, it was only at the start of this season that new rules were put in place that meant clubs HAD to engage in structured dialogue with their fans – why do some clubs need telling they have to do this – surely it is simply just good practise to do this? Or are we just lucky? To join the supporters trust of DRFC email membership@drfc-vsc.co.uk, chairman@drfc-vsc.co.uk or secretary@drfc-vsc.co.uk or follow the links on Viking Chat. The VSC board
