Darren Ferguson regular at all our games, along with her partner Paul. The players dedicated last week’s win at Yeovil to her memory, and my thoughts are with Paul and her family.
We were clinical in the way we went about our business at Yeovil Town last weekend, and in the second half were comfortable. The shift that the lads put in was fantastic, and the work-rate of the players is something everyone connected to the club can be proud of.
We have dedicated today’s fixture to supporting the work of Kick It Out and its ambition to #CallFullTimeOnHate in football. For more than 20 years, Kick It Out has played a vital role in ensuring that everyone, regardless of background is welcome in our game.
Five wins out of five in January is a brilliant return and I hope everyone is enjoying the form we are in, but we cannot let our work-rate drop as we know football can change quickly. We’ve just got to make sure we keep putting in the effort, maintain consistency and look to improve where we can.
Their message of equality is extremely important to us at Rovers and this is why we’re supporting Kick It Out’s stance against hate and encouraging all supporters to download their free app to eradicate all forms of discrimination from the game.
I would like to offer my condolences to the family of Jill McGarry who passed away suddenly last week. She was a

Gavin Baldwin Good afternoon, and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium for this afternoon’s game. I’d like to welcome the directors, fans, staff and players of the Shrimps, who were wonderful hosts when we visited them in September.
I would like to congratulate James Coppinger and Andy Butler on their extended contracts. Both are fantastic professionals who are real leaders in the dressing room, and a key reason why we
Today sees the club recognise the work of Kick It Out, football’s equality and inclusion organisation and its commitment to tackling hate through its #CallFullTimeOnHate initiative. Club Doncaster is pleased to support the work that Kick It Out is doing across all levels of the game. We believe hatred and discrimination has no place in football. Finally, I’d like to offer my condolences to the family of Jill McGarry. Jill was a familiar face at our games, whether in the press area at home games or in the stands on the road, alongside her partner Paul. Everyone at the club was saddened by her sudden loss. Enjoy the game.
Gavin

We can all be very proud of the place Rovers occupy at the top of Sky Bet League Two, and some of the fantastic performances that have put us there. The confidence down at the training ground is high, but that is matched by a determination to convert the great position we have put ourselves in into something tangible come the end of the season.

Schools from across the Doncaster Borough took part in the annual EFL Trust Kinder+Sport Kids Cup held at the Keepmoat Stadium by Club Doncaster Foundation. Twenty-three teams battled it out for the chance to compete in the regional finals, with Warmsworth Primary school coming - who are now one step closer to the Wembley turf – coming out on top. There to congratulate them and present the prestigious trophy was DRFC club captain Andy Butler, who wished them the best of luck in the next round. He said: “It was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic players at the cup and it was a pleasure to hand medals to the finalists.” Winners Warmsworth now face all the other champion schools from across the region for the ultimate prize of a final at Wembley Stadium. Community co-ordinator Heather King was delighted with the outcome of the Kids Cup and hopes it can be emulated when the next round is hosted at the Keepmoat Stadium in March. She said: “We’re so happy with how it turned out; all the players and teachers that turned up were a credit to their schools and the overall day was great. “It was brilliant to see Andy Butler there too - you could see how excited the kids were at his presence so we’re really grateful for that. “I can’t wait to see how the next round pans out. It’s an honour to be hosting the next round for all the winners and hopefully our team will be able to replicate such a great event.” EFL Trust Kinder+Sport cups and competitions are scattered throughout the year and are available to a variety of ages. FIT Rovers After weeks of build up and excitement, Club Doncaster Foundation were proud to host their inaugural Fit Rovers session at the Keepmoat Stadium. The night saw a full house of eager participants get to grips with the course, which offers men over the age of 30 the chance to lose weight, increase fitness levels and rekindle their love for football. Present for the course was Rovers club captain Andy Butler who greeted the participants before joining in with the health workshop and exercise session.
One session a week for eight weeks is included in the course, as well as incentives such as sports wear, Doncaster Rovers player visits and money off match shirts. Due to popular demand, Club Doncaster Foundation are now hosting a day session to run along side the evening one that will contain exactly the same structure and content. Unlike big fitness/weight-loss chains that charge you for public weigh-ins and give very little guidance,
The sessions consist of an interactive workshop looking at managing portion sizes and making healthy but tasty food followed by a gym session tailored to the needs of every individual. Community officer for health and wellbeing, Nick Gillott, has been delighted with the response and hopes that by providing this free course, Club Doncaster Foundation can make a real difference to the community. “He said: “Alarmingly, Doncaster was recently revealed as one of the most obese towns in Britain so by introducing the course we want to make a significant difference to that. “We had 20 people there for the first session, which is a fantastic turn out and everyone there was so keen to make a difference, it’s really great to see and they’ll be a good bunch to work with.” To find out more information about Fit Rovers or any of the health and wellbeing sessions run by Club Doncaster Foundation, contact Nick on nick.gillott@clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk.

Impressed with the turnout and quality of the session, Andy said: “It’s great to see so many men taking an interest in this, hopefully they can spread the word and we can get more people active.”

Club NEWS Rovers team captain James Coppinger and club captain Andy Butler have signed one-year contract extensions to keep them at the Keepmoat Stadium until the summer of 2018.
10 Box Office: 01302 762576
Coppinger has been at Rovers since 2004, and holds the club record for appearances. He said: “I never thought I'd be here 13 years on, but I feel in really good condition - I feel better than when I was younger, which sounds a little silly - but I am enjoying it and offering something to the team. “I've played 40 games a season for the past 16 years, and in pre-season I was as fit as anybody in the team, so it's looking good for the next couple of years. I have as much hunger now as when I was 21, if not more.” With Rovers sitting top of Sky Bet League Two, this has the potential to be a memorable campaign for the club. For fans favourite Coppinger, the bond with supporters has been key to that success. He added: “The fans have been superb home and away this season. It is important as a player to give them something to shout about, this season has been the best in terms of how close the players are with the fans.
“We need to be proud of being part of Rovers, because it's a special club and when people are proud of their club, it tends to bring success.” Doncaster-born Butler feels particular pride to be club captain of his hometown team. He said: “It’s great to be part of this club because it is going places now, everyone has bought into what the gaffer is trying to do. “I'm a Doncaster lad so it's brilliant for me. The club is on the up and going places, and I'm proud to be part of that. Everyone has bought into what the gaffer wants. “I'm proud to be club captain. Copps is team captain, but everyone is captain really and takes on their fair share.” Rovers also had one outgoing this week, with right-back Mitchell Lund joining Vanarama Conference side Wrexham on a one-month loan to build first-team fitness. MIDFIELDER
Ian LAWLOR MIDFIELD DYNAMO Ian Lawlor dropped down three divisions when he joined Rovers from Premier League giants Manchester City this January, but the big goalkeeper had no hesitation in agreeing a switch to South Yorkshire. The Keepmoat Stadium and Cantley Park training complex does not have quite the same luxury the 6ft 4in Irishman enjoyed at the Etihad Campus, but the vision for Rovers over the next few years was enough to convince him to make a permanent switch.
12 Box Office: 01302 762576
“I spoke with the manager about the ambition they have for the club going forward, obviously we have been on a great run already but the way they were talking about where they want the club to go over the next few years convinced me it was somewhere I really wanted to be,” he says. “The stadium is fantastic for a League Two side, but the project for the whole club going forward is really special.”
For all the benefits of his move to Rovers, Ian is grateful for the years he spent at the Citizens. He credits them as playing a huge role in his development as a person. “I gained a lot of experience, working with top players and top managers. The most important thing for me was to get out and get some first-team games, which I wasn’t getting at City, but I’ve gained a lot from them – on and off the pitch – so have a lot to thank them for,” he says.
I was delighted that the gaffer put his faith in me to go out and play straight away at Barnet. Coming into winning team can bring a bit more pressure as well, that you have to maintain those standards. The 22-year-old only been at Rovers since the turn of the year, but there is already a real understanding forming with his defensive team-mates. That has helped bring victories in his three competitive outings for the club, and his first clean sheet in last weekend’s 3-0 success at Yeovil Town. “Since I’ve come in, I’ve wanted to show people what I could bring to the club. Most importantly, I was happy to get the three points in all the games we have played,” he says.
“But I was delighted to get the win in the first game, and build on that with two more. We have a good mentality at the moment, and have to just keep doing what we are doing. “For the whole team, including the staff and the subs, the clean sheet and three points is what we want. But for the backline and the keeper it is what we strive for, it is our main aim and hopefully the boys up front can do their job and put the ball in the back of the net – and I’m very glad it all came together last weekend. “We’ve got a good relationship as a defence so far. We’ve only been together three or four weeks, but have done a lot of work in training so we understand each other and know what we expect from each other. You can see that every day in training and when it comes to a
Confidence is clearly high at the club at the moment, but Ian echoes his team-mates in saying no one is taking anything for granted as the players strive for promotion to Sky Bet League One. “We take it day by day, the furthest we look is the next game and never beyond that,” he says. “We come in every day and get our heads down because everyone has got a job to do, and we know nothing is won yet. Everyone is grounded and willing to work hard “I’m looking forward to getting my head down over the next couple of years and help this big club as much as I can.” It is little surprise that Ian looks up to Shay Given - a predecessor between the sticks for previous club City and his country. Shay is someone Ian is able to turn to for advice – most recently, helping him decide his future was in South Yorkshire. “I’ve spoken to him a couple of times and he has looked after me a lot to be fair to have someone like him, who is my idol, look after me is brilliant,” adds Ian. “I spoke to him before I moved here, when I got the deal here and after the Barnet game, he said it was a massive move and it was something that I needed to do. “It’s good to have someone like him there is good and I always appreciate the advice that he gives me.”

TOP STOPPER
01 | BARRY ROCHE
Goalkeeper Barry Roche spent a season with Leeds United as a youth scholar before signing a professional deal with Nottingham Forest in 2000, under the stewardship of Paul Hart. He made his debut early on in the 2000/01 season, coming on as a late substitute against Crystal Palace, where he saved a penalty in a 3-2 victory. After finding first team opportunities hard to come by, Roche saw his future elsewhere.

The 6ft 4in shot stopper joined Chesterfield at the start of the 2005/06 campaign, he became the Spireites’ No.1 keeper for three seasons before moving on to Morecambe.

During his time at the Shrimps, Roche has been awarded the club’s Player of the Year award on two occasions, firstly at the end of the 2008/09 season before being given it again at the end of the following campaign. Roche has also scored a goal for Morecambe, which was a last minute equaliser against Portsmouth in 2016.

Vastly experienced midfield maestro Kevin Ellison was one of Jim Bentley’s first signings in his first month as Morecambe manager. Ellison signed from South Yorkshire side Rotherham United on a free transfer at the beginning of the 2011/12 season. Originally from Liverpool, Ellison began his footballing career with non-league side Southport in 1996 before moving onto Chorley and Conway United all before the turn of the Millennium. After spending two seasons with Altrincham, he signed for Football League side Leicester City in 2001. Ellison has also played for Bradford City, Hull City and Tranmere Rovers before finding signing on the dotted line with the Shrimps.
MIDFIELD MAESTRO
11 | KEVIN ELLISON
Morecambe manager Jim Bentley is something of a club legend, with the 40-year-old having played for the Shrimps before he was appointed player/manager in 2011. The former defender began his footballing career with Telford United, where he spent five seasons before moving up to Christie Park in 2002. Having spent majority of his career with the Shirmps, he decided to dip his toes into coaching, becoming part of the backroom staff for the side’s reserve team at the start of the 2009/10 season. A season later he was promoted to a player/coach role before becoming player/manager in May 2011. Bentley is the third longest serving manager in English football, behind Exeter’s Paul Tisdale and Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger.
06 | DEAN WINNARD
DEFENSIVE ROCK Defender Dean Winnard is a new addition at the Globe Arena after moving from Accrington Stanley, the 27-year-old began his career with Lancashire side Blackburn Rovers back in 2008. After captaining the U18s and reserve sides at Edwood Park, Winnard found it difficult to force his way into the starting XI, which ultimately saw him leave the club a season later. He joined up with John Coleman at Accrington Stanley at the beginning of the 2009/10 season, and became an instant hit at the Wham Stadium.
Winnard joined up with the Shrimps at the start of this season, he scored his first goal for the club against Coventry City in the FA Cup.

Mullin came through the ranks at Liverpool before joining Spanish side Santander on a short term deal. On his return to England, he signed for Huddersfield Town on a one-year deal at the start of the 2012/13 season. In the summer of 2013, Mullin signed a one-year extension to keep him at the Terriers until the end of the 2013/14 campaign. After his contract with Huddersfield expired, he initially joined the Shrimps on trail, where he scored five goals in four games. Due to his impressive performances he was rewarded with a deal with the club, during his second season with Morecambe, the front man scored eight goals in 20 appearances.

After his spell with Liverpool he joined Morecambe at the start of the 2000/2001 season, where he became a stand out player for the then Conference side during his three years at the Shrimps. He then moved to Doncaster Rovers where he spent two-and-a-half years, scoring a thunderous effort against Hereford in the LDV Trophy and securing a Division Three winner’s medal during his stay.

Hello everyone, Welcome to our game against Morecambe. It has been a fantastic season so far and I have been having lots of fun. At the last game against Crewe I had my photo taken with Zak Miller and a couple of his team-mates from Branton Juniors. I was given a hula hoop challenge and was put through my paces in a fitness challenge! Thank you to all of you who get involved with these activities. After today we will have only eight home games left - this season has gone so quickly! Let’s make lots of noise and tick these games off one by one.

It was a game that Rovers’ youngsters dominated for large spells and only a combination of the woodwork, erratic finishing and a lack of composure in and around the penalty area prevented a convincing win. Rovers started the game very well and dominated possession, indeed Bradford’s first touch in the Rovers penalty area came after 32 minutes. Prior to this Matt Overton had hit a post, James Morris put a good chance just wide and Matt Overton attempted lob was just under-hit. Danny Amos and Jacob Fletcher were two other players who could have put Rovers into the lead with decent chances, with Josh Barker having an excellent chance at the end of the half. In the second half Rovers continued to dominate and further chances came and went. Keeper James Leverton showed excellent concentration to make a good save from Bradford’s only shot on goal. Academy manager Kieran Scarff said: “Paul Stancliffe and John Schofield have been asking for longer spells of control in games, and the players certainly provided this. “In terms of control and possession this was certainly one of our strongest performances of the season. We speak a lot, and have spent a lot of time, with the players and coaches about a clear identity from 1st team down and so much of the way the boys played showed that consistent identity. However they also realise that they must be more clinical to turn that level of control into wins. There were a large number of positives from the game.”

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 15 - By John Coyle
50 Box Office: 01302 762576
The snow that had covered the Belle Vue pitch as Rovers recorded their biggest ever League victory, 9-2 against Carlisle United, was not going anywhere quickly. Arctic winds brought London its coldest night for over sixty years and snow fell at regular intervals across the north of England. Rovers’ visit to Peel Park to face Accrington Stanley on Saturday 1st February 1947 was given the green light, but conditions were difficult. Snow had been rolled into the pitch, which was hard, and the lines had been painted in blue. Rovers fielded an unchanged XI. Line up: Archie Ferguson; Harry Tomlinson Bill Corbett; Cecil Stirland, Sid Bycroft, Bob McFarlane; Jackie Kirkaldie, Jackie Thompson, Clarrie Jordan, Paul Todd, Ralph Maddison. Rovers had beaten Stanley 5-0 in the FA Cup before Christmas but the home side adapted better to the conditions. Ferguson in the Rovers goal was busy, pulling off one outstanding save from a shot by Edwards. Just before half time Jordan uncharacteristically missed a great chance, Clarrie shooting well wide after JORDAN Rymer pushed a shot from
Todd into his path. The centre-forward made amends after 63 minutes when Thompson fed him and his shot trickled into goal between Rymer’s Paul TODD legs. Stanley could have levelled when Ferguson and Bycroft got into a tangle and Mercer shot towards an open goal only for Corbett to scramble the ball off the line. Ferguson then saved a fierce shot by Malcolm, but Rovers held on to win Jackie 1-0. With Rotherham THOMSON United also winning, 4-0 at home to Hartlepools United, Rovers retained a seven point lead in Division Three North.

making roads impassable. Tuesday’s market day was the quietest for some time. Wednesday offered the hope of a slight thaw, but further snow fell on Friday and Saturday’s match was a victim of the icy weather.

Conditions were better west of the Pennines and Rotherham were able to travel to Crewe where they won 2-1, narrowing the gap to five points. In total nineteen games were called off and a week later, with no let-up in the snow and ice, twenty-one of the forty-four scheduled League games were postponed. Rotherham’s home game was a victim, as was Rovers’ planned trip to Bradford City. Football was not the only thing affected and with up to fourteen rail lines blocked by snow, there were acute problems with moving enough coal to keep industry going. Many workers found themselves on short time or having to work shifts in order to take advantage of available power. At home, electricity blackouts were a further source of irritation for the people of a country still recovering from long years of war.
game against York City had to be called off with Belle Vue still snow bound. A hefty backlog of fixtures was building up, the only consolation being that rivals were in the same boat. Rotherham were again fortunate in that their match was further west, and they took advantage by winning 2-1 against Stockport County at Edgeley Park. Rovers still led the Northern Section table with 45 points from 26 games but Rotherham, who had played 27, were now on 42. Chester, whose form had dipped of late, were on 37 points from 27 and probably could be discounted. The title was seemingly heading to Yorkshire and Rovers had the edge. But they needed to get onto the pitch again.

Free coach travel is available from Doncaster and the surrounding areas. Let’s hope for another win, get behind the team Rovers till we Die Paul Mayfield Viking Supporters Co-Operative Well we’re into the second half of the season and we, at the VSC, are as pleased as all of DRFC’s supporters to see the team riding high in the league.
The owners and board have given the manager the support and resources he has needed to sustain a very healthy promotion challenge this season and so far things are looking very good. That’s not to say it’s a foregone conclusion – far from it – we saw last season that football remains “a funny old game”, but hopefully now we can now really push on and start next season with a solid base in League One. We are sure that all fans can now see the benefits of having the current owners, board, manager, staff and players at the helm. You will see today the launch of a VSC project that has been in the making for over a year now. With the support of the Kick it Out campaign and the DRFC heritage trail the VSC secretary will present the Club Doncaster Foundation with a portable exhibition about the extraordinary life and times of the famous comedian Charlie Aldophus Williams – who also happened one of the first black football players in England after the Second World War and a DRFC stalwart for 11 years between 1948 and 1959. The next programme will have more details about the aims and objectives of this project! As ever the VSC are always wanting to boost our membership so if you’re interested in joining the supporters trust of your football club please email one of the following or follow the links on Viking Chat: membership@drfc-vsc.co.uk, chairman@drfc-vsc.co.uk or secretary@drfc-vsc.co.uk. Here is to a successful remainder of the season. The VSC board.
