Darren Ferguson I’d like to welcome the manager, fans, players and staff of Stevenage to the Keepmoat Stadium this afternoon.

will stand us in good stead. The support at both our festive away games was incredible, as always.

I hope everyone had a merry Christmas and new year. We are right where we want to be in terms of our two-points-per-game target as we enter the second half of the league season.

I hope to be able to add a couple of new faces to the squad by the end of the January transfer window. Yesterday we completed the signing of Alfie May from Hythe Town, while Tyler Garratt has joined Ross Etheridge in going out on loan.

Our centre-halves did really well at Notts County on Boxing Day when it was a real physical match at times. We know we will have to do that at times this season, especially away from home. It shows the character and determination of the players. If we keep fighting, added to the quality we have in the team, that

I felt Tyler and Ross needed game time. We also have a few friendlies arranged this month to make sure the players who are not in the first-team every week get some game time. Enjoy the game.

We know there is a lot of hard work still to come, but we know if we consistently reach the standards we have set then we will continue to pick up plenty of points. We have had to battle at times.

Gavin Baldwin Welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium today as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of it becoming our home. I am delighted to welcome some familiar faces back from the very first match played on the pitch to today’s game.

It is fitting that we look back to the past today, but as a club there is much to celebrate about the present and the future. Today we can confirm Reece Fielding and Will Longbottom have signed professional terms with us – both have already featured in the first-team this season, and I am sure they will go on to make significant contributions to the club. Yesterday we also confirmed the signing of Alfie May from Hythe Town. We invited

We are in a strong position in the league so do not expect wholesale changes this January, but if we feel we can improve the quality in the squad then we will do so. I hope all our fans had a good Christmas and new year. I’d like to welcome the directors, fans, staff and players of Stevenage to today’s game, and wish everyone a safe journey home. Enjoy the game

Gavin

Moving to this stadium just over a decade ago was a truly transformative period in the club’s history, and fans should be in no doubt just how much we have moved on in the 10 years we have called this ground home. It is exciting to think about where we could be as a club in a further 10 years.

him to spend a week training with us earlier this season, and he chose us over a number of other EFL clubs – including from the division above – because of the welcome he received and our manager’s record in developing players from non-league.

Each year, the students are split into teams and battle it out in an 11 a-side football tournament to win the prestigious Christmas Cup.

EDUCATION FOUNDATION

This year the tournament was combined with Christmas Jumper Day, so staff and players wore their brightest Christmas jumpers and donated to Save the Children.

Club Doncaster Foundation staff also prepared a spread of food for everyone involved that was then enjoyed during a festive presentation. Academy co-ordinator Tim Ryan was delighted with the outcome of the day. “The standard of the football was quality, and it’s always great to see both the lads and girls getting stuck in,” he said. “Everyone did themselves proud, from the footballers to the foundation staff who gave up their time to put on a spread of food for them. The amount we raised through the day will make such a difference to the charity.” During the day the students were also able to purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win a pair of football boots and trainers with proceeds also going to the charity. More than £200 was raised for the charity, much to the delight of principal of the Sports College Adi Turnpenny. “You only have to watch the news to see the charity we are supporting is a great cause and all participants should be proud to be involved,” he said. “The Christmas Cup is now the traditional way for the students to end the year with everyone from the college and staff from across the foundation getting involved. It’s always such a great event and this year even more so with everyone pulling together to put on a spread for the players.” Applications to study in the 2017/2018 academic year are now being processed via www.clubdoncastersportscollege.co.uk.

CHESWORLD PARK HOSPITAL Rovers trio Andy Butler, John Marquis and Harry Middleton paid a visit to Cheswold Park Hospital before Christmas to oversee the great work put in by Club Doncaster Foundation. The three spent time helping to prepare healthy food options before sitting down for a question and answer session in a scheme created to improve the health and wellbeing of those involved. The visit marked the end of an eight-week spell with the hospital delivering Fit Rovers – a course designed to help men lose weight and adopt a much healthier lifestyle. Butler praised Club Doncaster Foundation for their impressive work they have put into the scheme.

“Fit Rovers is excellent for anyone wanting to manage a healthier lifestyle - the results were so significant.”

The course will take place at the Keepmoat Stadium and offers excellentlydelivered sessions and advice to work towards a healthier lifestyle – free of charge. Unlike big fitness/weight-loss chains that charge you for pubic weigh-ins andgive very little guidance, information at Fit Rovers is completely confidential meaning you can keep a track of exactly how you’re doing on a one-on-one basis with the staff. One session a week for eight weeks is included in the course, as well as incentives such as sports wear, Rovers player visits and money off match shirts. The sessions consist of an interactive workshop looking at managing portion sizes and making healthy but tasty food followed by a gym session tailored to the needs of every individual. For more information on how to get involved contact Nick or Scott on fitrovers@clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk or 01302 764663.

“The visit to Cheswold Park Hospital was a great chance to see all the hard work that Club Doncaster Foundation do in action. It was clear just from the visit that it really helped the patients in there, and the whole Foundation team are a real credit to Doncaster Rovers,” he said.

Fit Rovers is an eight-week course aimed at the general public for men over the age of 30.

10 YEARS AT THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM Belle Vue was home. Rovers had played there since 1922 and by the time we reached the 1990s it was showing its age. One by one stands had been changed because of the changing face of football. The Popular Terrace that used to have a bar at the back and could accommodate thousands had to be cut in half due to subsidence issues and the “Cow Shed” on the Town End Terrace was pulled down as a result of the Taylor Report. In the mid nineties the then Rovers’ “benefactor” Ken Richardson arranged for a former SAS serviceman to burn down the Main Stand so that he could claim the insurance money. The plot failed and Richardson was imprisoned for his part in the debacle. This left a big hole in the stand and the club was close to going to the wall. On the playing side, Richardson stopped putting any money into the club, which was relegated out of the Football League. O,nly thanks to an investment company Westferry did the club survive at all taking

10

ownership for £4million. Soon after that former directorJohn Ryan was able to do business with Westferry and take ownership of the club himself. The team having dropped out of the Football League

Box Office: 01302 762576

was playing Conference football with little hope of returning quickly. John Ryan was conscious of the fact that if he was going to turn the club around, it would require significant work to be done on the state of the ground. A rally was held in the Earl of Doncaster Hotel in which Ryan criticised the Council in not helping the club over the idea of a new stadium. It caused uproar in the Council and Ryan was made to apologise for his comments but around the same time the Council did concede that dialogue with the club had broken down. It was the catalyst to them setting up a steering committee that included representatives from Doncaster Rugby League Club and Doncaster Rovers and significantly Andy Liney representing the Viking Supporters Co-operative, who were vocal in their support for Mr Ryan and the need to push for a new stadium in order for the club and town to progress. Initial plans were drawn up for a 10,000 seater stadium to be built of four separate stands on the site where the XP School now stands. This was still ambitious as Rovers were a Conference side and weren’t showing any signs of moving any time soon. Then performances improved on the pitch and attendances started to increase as Rovers started to battle at the top end of the Conference. Then Rovers achieved promotion back to the Football League in 2003, then after just one season in the bottom tier, were promoted again as champions in May 2004. The plans changed and started incorporating more and more and were now looking at a 15,000 capacity located closer to the lake. An ambitious plan with floating roofs was considered at one stage, then a version closer to the final build with pods situated at regular intervals around the ground were agreed. Mayor Martin Winter set a council budget for the stadium at £32million to include the main bowl, a second pitch with

11 Box Office: 01302 762576 an athletics track, five a side pitches and a health club. After the first tenders the construction companies were ordered to “sharpen their pencils”. The tenders came back again, the pods were no longer on the plans, but Mowlem Construction / Carillion were awarded the contact with a deadline of completing the build in two years. Then in December 2004 came the news that construction would be delayed because England Nature had found the site to be a breeding ground for the Great Crested Newt, a species protected by law. The plans were given the go ahead by Doncaster Council on January 13 2005, but, thanks to the newts, construction did not commence until October 2005. The deadline to complete the stadium did not change, however, and Carillion were tasked to complete by December 2006 with the first match scheduled for December 27 2006 – a rugby friendly between the now aptly named Doncaster Lakers and Sheffield Eagles – with the first Rovers game, a league game against Huddersfield to follow on January 1 2007.

HE PLAYED FOR BOTH

Carl ALFORD During his playing days for Stevenage, Carl Alford certainly knew where the back of the net was. The striker, originally from Denton in Greater Manchester plied his trade with Burnley, Macclesfield Town, Rochdale and Stockport County before heading south.

His goal scoring record could not be continued at Belle Vue as he only managed to score one goal before leaving at the end of the season.

Jamie MCCOMBE

LEGEND, WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Towering central defender Jamie McCombe penned a deal with Rovers back in the summer of 2012, he started his footballing career with rivals Scunthorpe United before moving onto Lincoln City and Bristol City respectively. In his first season down at Ashton Gate, the Robins achieved promotion to the Championship after finishing second in the league. He was voted the club’s Player of the Season. McCombe joined Rovers on a free transfer from Huddersfield Town. It took him until April 1 to score his first goal for the club, scoring the winner against Swindon Town at the Keepmoat. He spent a season at Boro after leaving Rovers at the end of the 2014/15 season, McCombe is currently playing for Lincoln City in the Conference National.

He signed for the Boro in 1998 where he spent two seasons, Alford managed to scored an incredible 42 goals in 39 games, which saw him leave to join fellow Conference Premier side Doncaster Rovers in 2000.

TOP STOPPER

01 | JAMIE JONES

Jamie Jones, 27, originally form Kirkby in Merseyside, came through the youth academy at Everton. He was rewarded with his professional contract in the summer of 2007, but the keeper could not force his way into the first team. Leyton Orient was his next destination and after battling for the first choice position alongside Glenn Morris, Jones eventually made it his. He made his debut for The O’s in a League Cup game against Southend, before his League bow in a 2-1 defeat to Scunthorpe United

18

The 6ft 3in top stopper made more than 150 appearances for Orient during his six-years at the Matchroom Stadium before moving up to Lancashire to sign for Preston North End.

Box Office: 01302 762576

First-team opportunities came hard to come by during his spell up North, which saw him pull on a Lilywhite shirt on only 17 occasions. During his time at Deepdale he was loaned out on four separate occasions, playing for Colchester United, Coventry City, Rochdale and Stevenage – for whom he signed on a permanent basis. Jones moved to Stevenage in the January transfer window in 2016, the keeper has gone on to make more than 40 appearances for Boro.

1 3

The last time we faced Stevenage, Tom Pett came on as a half-time substitute and significantly changed the game in the favour of the hosts down at the Lamex Stadium. Fortunately for Rovers they walked away with all three points in a 4-3 victory that afternoon. The midfield maestro started his footballing career with Boreham Wood before moving onto Potters Bar Town in 2003, after spending a large chunk of his youth career with the Scholars, he was rewarded with a first-team contract. Pett played for the Hertfordshire-based side for three seasons, which also saw him captain the side . In 2012, the then 21-year-old moved on to Wealdstone. During his two seasons at the club he made more than 90 appearances, finding the net 24 times. It was agreed in June of 2014 that Pett would become a new addition at the Lamex and he once again hit the ground running. He scored his first goal for the Boro in a 3-2 defeat to York City, the midfielder found the net another seven times that season - including a play-off semi-final strike against Southend

MIDFIELD MAESTRO

11 | TOM PETT

Darren Sarll is the youngest manager in Sky Bet League Two. Sarll came through the youth system at semi-professional side Hitchin Town, where he made 23 appearances for the Canaries in his first and only season with the club. After spending only a few months with Berkhamsted Town in 2002, he found himself on the move again to Bedford Town. The midfielder spent two seasons at the Eyrie, making 73 appearances, before going on to play for Chesham United, Dunstable Town, Hemel Hempstead Town and St Albans City before hanging up his boots in 2006. His first venture into coaching came with Stevenage’s reserve side at the start of the 2007/08 season. He had a spell with Brentford which eventually saw him promoted to the role of assistant manager after Andy Scott took the vacant managerial post at Griffin Park, before going on to take the role of head of player development at Rotherham United. After Stevenage parted company with ex-Manchester United player Teddy Sheringham earlier this year, Sarll was given the position of caretaker manager before being taking the job on a permanent basis.

05 | FRASER FRANKS

DEFENSIVE ROCK Defender Fraser Franks has spent his entire footballing career in the south of England, starting with Chelsea before moving onto Brentford in 2006. He was rewarded with a professional deal two seasons later, but he was unable to make any first team appearances during his time at Griffin Park. After spending a season out on loan at Basingstoke Town, Franks saw his future elsewhere and decided to join AFC Wimbledon on a one-year deal. He made his full debut in a televised game against Crawley Town, the Dons won 2-1 and Franks also scooped the Man of the Match award. He was part of the Wimbledon side that were promoted into the Football League in 2011, though he missed majority of that season due to a knee ligament injury he suffered against Grimsby Town.

He was named in the Conference South’s Team of the Year as Welling were promoted to the Conference Premier League as champions. Luton Town came in for the defender halfway through the 2013/14 season and at the end of the season he achieved promotion to League Two with the Hatters.

2 4

After turning professional with Scunthorpe United in 2009, Godden found first team opportunities hard to come by at Glanford Park which saw him subsequently loaned out for first team action. Brigg Town was his first destination, the move saw him stay at the Hawthorns for three months where he made 20 appearances and found the back of the net on nine occasions. During his five years at Glanford Park he was loaned out to Dartford, Ebbsfleet United, Gainsborough Trinity, Ilkeston Town and Tamworth before leaving the Iron in 2014. Despite being loaned out on numerous occasions Godden did make 21 appearances in all competitions for Scunthorpe, which included coming on as a substitute against Manchester United in a League Cup fixture in 2011. Godden returned to Ebbsfleet. The deadly striker made an impressive impact at Stonebridge Road, scoring 35 times in just over 70 appearances. He returned to the EFL by signing for Stevenage at the start of this season, and the 25-year-old has been a regular goalscorer.

Kieran SCARFF Firstly, I’d like to wish you all very best wishes for 2017! I hope you have all enjoyed a great Christmas and New Year period. My first few months as Academy Manager have been very positive. The support I have had from so many people makes the future certainly very exciting.

Just before Christmas I looked at the involvement of youth team players in the first team squad on match days. In 70 per cent of our first team games we have included at least one youth team player in the match day squad. Nine youth team players, out of a current squad of 17, have had the opportunity to be in the match day squad. These statistics are enormously positive and provide clear evidence of the opportunities afforded to young players at this football club. Credit should go to the players for grasping these opportunities whilst the manager and his staff should be applauded for playing such

I am delighted to say that Will Longbottom and Reece Fielding have been offered professional contracts by the club. Both players have become well known to the supporters and we wish them all the best as they embark on a thoroughly deserved next stage of their career. Both players have developed through the academy system and this news will be a proud moment for the two boys, their parents, families and coaching staff who have played key roles in their development. On this 10th anniversary of the Keepmoat Stadium I am sure you will have been reminiscing about your favourite moments. I certainly expect that in 10 years’ time you will be talking about a significant number of home-grown players who will have played their part in the history of this club. Good luck to the gaffer, staff and players ahead of today’s game. Kieran

45 Box Office: 01302 762576

Of course, the primary aim for any academy programme is to develop players through their system who then go onto appear in the first team and then develop careers at this football club.

a key role in the development of these players. The owners and the directors are clear that they want ‘home-grown’ players in the first team squad and their commitment to this is clear.

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 12 - By John Coyle

50

Rovers may have enjoyed a convincing win over Wrexham on Christmas Day, but they travelled the Racecourse Ground less than 24 hours later knowing that the return game would offer a stiffer test. Wrexham were unbeaten on their home turf in 1946-47 and were far from out of contention for the Championship of Division Three North. Rovers named an unchanged line up:

Box Office: 01302 762576

Archie Ferguson; Ernie Swallow, Bill Corbett; Cecil Heydon, Sid Bycroft, Bob McFarlane; Jackie Kirkaldie, Leslie Owens, Clarrie Jordan, Paul Todd, Ralph Maddison.

Ralph MADDISON

Frank MITCHESON

Jack MARRIOTT

Leslie OWENS

The home side forced Rovers into some stout defending, with Ferguson in goal having a fine match. Despite the handicap of losing Owens to an ankle injury, Rovers were ahead at the break, Maddison racing clear of the home defence to shoot past McKee. Rovers were back to a full complement for the second half, although Owens was below his best. Nevertheless they secured a 2-0 victory after 70 minutes when Jordan escaped his marker and fed Todd who capped off a fine move with the second goal. Rotherham beat Chester 3-1 at Millmoor, so Rovers found themselves four points clear at the top of the table. Boxing Day was a Thursday and two days later Rovers were back in action with a trip to Spotland to face Rochdale. Rovers were proving to be a big attraction and the crowd of 13,555 was the highest at a Rochdale game for a number of years. Owens had not recovered from his injury sustained at Wrexham, and to make matters worse Jordan missed his first game of the season with a knee problem. Frank Mitcheson returned to the side and Jackie Marriott made his first appearance of the campaign at centre-forward. Rovers were behind after seven minutes when Cunliffe’s pass caught out the defence and Hargreaves scored.

and Heydon respectively. New Brighton were near the foot of the table and a comfortable home win was anticipated.

It was as well Rovers won, because it allowed them to maintain their four point lead at the top, with Chester and Rotherham United both recording 6-0 home wins. A week later Rovers welcomed New Brighton for their first game of 1947. Jordan and Cecil Stirland were fit to return and replaced Marriott

Bill CORBETT

So the game ended 0-0, Rovers’ first scoreless draw of the season and the only time they had failed to find the net so far in 1946-47. Some consolation for Rovers came in that their nearest challengers for the title, Chester and Rotherham, had both suffered away defeats. Now Rovers faced a break from their League programme with Portsmouth due to visit for an eagerly-awaited FA Cup tie.

51 Box Office: 01302 762576

Todd levelled after 23 minutes, wriggling past defenders in characteristic style and then Maddison’s fierce drive made it 2-1. Wood’s equaliser sent the teams in level at the break. On the hour Rovers scored the decisive goal, Marriott getting out to the left and centring for Kirkaldie to shoot home. Rovers’ 18th win of the campaign put them on 38 points, representing the best first half of a Football League campaign for 53 years.

Rovers were below par and the visiting defence had few problems in keeping them at bay. Rovers had the ball in the net after 20 minutes when Todd headed home from Maddison’s corner only for the officials to rule that the ball had already gone out of play. Rovers continued to press but their forwards experienced a frustrating afternoon and the closest they came to scoring was when left-back Corbett struck the bar with a speculative shot from distance.

Rovers Family Doncaster Rovers Supporters Club Good afternoon and welcome to the all the Stevenage supporters who have made the trip up the A1 for today’s game, let’s hope it’s as exciting as the game back in December where we scrapped home a 4-3 victory. That second-half was exciting, but not good for my blood pressure! It was great to get back to winning ways against Grimsby Town after the defeat at Plymouth.

The Supporters Club have two new badge designs on sale priced at £3. You can get them from Supporters Club shop , situated in the community changing room area, in the North Stand which is also the place to go for all your programme needs.. Supporters Club handbooks are now also available for collection from our office, or on the away coaches.

We played well at Home Park, despite the result. Credit to the 400 or so fans who made the trip down there, many only getting to the game 30 mins before kick-off, and to the fans who stayed over in Torquay and seemed to have a great night out.
