Supporting #RainbowLaces

Darren Ferguson and both my strikers scored, which was pleasing. We were pretty solid, throughout the team, really. We just need to find that consistently. Your support, as always, was brilliant and helped us to victory.

But we can take a lot of confidence from last weekend’s win over Hartlepool United. We did really well, dominated possession and got control of the game.

I understand people will look at the results of sides around us, but we can’t control what happens at other teams. We can only concentrate on ourselves.

I’d have been disappointed if we’d not won, but I would not have been disappointed with the performance. Pools were stubborn defensively but our players stuck to what we wanted to do, and that’s a real key factor for me.

We are still unbeaten at home in the league, which is really important, and we’re looking to keep that consistency from last Saturday – if we do that, we will win a lot of games. If we win today then we would have 36 points from 18 games, which would be a great return.

Some of our football was very good, we controlled the ball and found some good passing angles. The supporters were fantastic, too, and had a big role to play in the victory. Liam Mandeville, who got the winner, was very good again. He was a handful

There have been moments when we’ve blown teams away, but I still think we can be better – there’s still more in there from us. Enjoy the game.

Welcome to Alberto Cavasin, the fans, staff, players and directors of Leyton Orient. They have won their past two league games on the road, so we know we will have to be at our best to get a result today.

Gavin Baldwin I’d like to welcome the Leyton Orient fans, directors, staff and players to the Keepmoat Stadium this afternoon.

That victory means we go into today’s game with a possibility of a 100 per cent winning record in the league for the month. We hope not having a midweek game, while Orient and most of the rest of the division did, will be of some assistance today. As a reminder, we know some fans had already made travel arrangements to go to Stevenage before that match was moved – if you booked train tickets please make sure you get in touch with our Box Office so we can do something to make your life a little easier.

Planning for next season is also well underway at Doncaster Rugby League club, and season tickets are on sale now. Grand Final winner Feka Paleaaesina, who signed for us this summer, will hand-deliver tickets to some who purchase before the end of the month. Season tickets are £130 for adults, £110 for concessions, just £10 for juniors and free for under fives if purchased in this period. We are really excited by the possibilities for the Dons next season and fully expect to have two teams pushing for promotion at the Keepmoat Stadium in 2017. Enjoy the game

Gavin

Last weekend’s win over Hartlepool United was an important one. It may have been a late goal to claim the three points, but the performance throughout the match meant the win was truly deserved. I’d also like to thank everyone present for their participation in the moving remembrance service before the match.

We welcome Blackpool in the second round of the Checkatrade Trophy. We are trialling an earlier kick-off of 7pm in response to requests to make evening matches easier for our younger fans to attend. Please make sure you’re aware of this kick-off time if you are coming down.

The iWill campaign highlighted the fantastic voluntary work done throughout the UK by 10-20 year olds that otherwise slip under the radar. To celebrate the week and exhibit Doncaster’s brilliance, a case study a day was showcased through videos and tweets showing how Club Doncaster Sports College students aided their community. The social action work the young people did included renovations to several community centres as well as raising almost £600 for Disability Sport Yorkshire. Kevan Halliday-Brown, chief executive of Disability Sport Yorkshire, believes young volunteers taking part in social action has many benefits. He said: “Fundraising is at the absolute core of everything we do, without the work of Club Doncaster Foundation and others like it, our work shops just wouldn’t happen.

“Young people are so enthusiastic and willing; they have so much potential to help us raise not only money but profile too so it needs to be shouted about. “ Step Up To Serve aims to engage with 60 per cent of 10-20 year olds by 2020 through the iWill pledges making it a national campaign to improve communities. Club Doncaster Foundation’s head of community John Davis has been proud to support the week. He said: “I am delighted to support this campaign as it gives us a great opportunity to showcase some of the inspirational social action work that is taking place across Doncaster. “Since joining Club Doncaster Foundation I have been overwhelmed by the work that young people have carried out across our NCS programmes and this campaign gives them some well-deserved recognition.”

Gideons International ROVERS-BRANDED BIBLES Gideons International recently came down to the Keepmoat Stadium to hand out Rovers-branded bibles to staff. Gideons are an international organisation who provide bibles free to members of the public, most famously ensuring there is one in most hotel rooms. They recently resupplied Doncaster Royal Infirmary, and now Rovers are only the second football club in the country to receive bespoke branded bibles.

“The thing I found with football, and it’s the same off the pitch, that if you’re performing well on the pitch then all is good, but if you’re not performing well then it impacts your relationships in life. “Footballers have to perform, for the manager, for the fans, to keep in the team or to earn a

Barry is a familiar face at Rovers, visiting the Keepmoat Stadium and Cantley Park training ground once a week to speak to staff. He added: “I’m just an ear for people to come and talk to. I am independent, I don’t get paid so I am not beholdent to anyone, it’s the person who is in front of me who is the most important. I also help out Jim the groundsman on matchdays.” Chris Axelby from Gideons added; “We wanted to take up the opportunity to give these bibles to everyone at Doncaster Rovers that we could. We are really keen to give crested New Testaments like this to any organisation, so it’s wonderful to work with Barry here to have these printed up to give to all the staff and players. “Sports people are under pressure, as we all are, and all Gideon New Testaments have a help section at the front. So you can be upset about your team not winning – it doesn’t tell you here how to win, but it tells you how to deal with those things in life. We call it a guidebook for life.”

Club chaplain Barry Miller arranged this after working with Gideons and Club Doncaster’s supporter services manager Charles Swallow. Barry, a former Rovers centre-back, said: “We wanted to get a bible to every person who works here because we know how much it can make a difference.

ROWE TOMMY

Tommy ROWE MIDFIELD DYNAMO It’s a miserably wet Monday morning at Cantley Park training ground but there is an energy about the place. Whether rain or shine, Tommy Rowe’s outlook remains the same. There’s a measured balance to the way he talks but with the inflection of authenticity. The midfielder made a leap of faith in the summer to join the club permanently despite the stain of relegation on his CV while on loan at the end of last season. So, with Rovers sitting in the upper echelons of League Two, has he been justified in reuniting with his mentor Darren Ferguson?

12 Box Office: 01302 762576

“Personally, yes. I always thought, regardless of what we did, you always have a high standard in your head of where you want to be and that was at the top and the size of the club would help with that,” Rowe explains. “The way I visualised it was simple; to have a successful season this year on and off the field, as a team, as a unit and build to get promotion – and then for the future. “The unity is as a whole squad, the whole club and we’re all working hard to keep that going. That’s what gets you success and makes the whole club happy. The ultimate aim is promotion and anything short of that isn’t good enough really. “Sometimes our football at this level might not suit the way we want to play but if we keep the same philosophy and keep digging out the performances then we stick by the fact that the results don’t matter, but the performances do. Sometimes, you won’t get the performances but you’ll get the results and we’ll be able to pick up points.” Rovers – and Rowe – are resilient. Both shrug off the bumps and bruises and go to the final whistle. The team have scored more goals in the last 15 minutes than at any other period of matches, and, as the 28-year-old

Originally born in Krakow, Poland, before moving to Australia at the age of two, Cisak started his career at Leicester City but made his professional debut at Accrington Stanley having moved there in August 2010. Following a successful 2010-11 campaign the goalkeeper was then signed by Oldham where he made 59 appearances during two years before making the switch to Burnley. Despite joining the Clarets in 2013, Cisak was unable to force himself into the first team and was restricted to only two appearances at Turf Moor, leading to loan spells at York and Orient during the 2014-15 season. Cisak is eligible to play for the Australia national team and has been called up for the first team squad on several occasions.

Wide man Massey became Orient’s third signing ahead of the 2016-17 season, when he joined from Colchester for an undisclosed fee. The Watford academy graduate penned a three-year deal with the O’s, bringing a four-year stay in Essex to an end. Massey made his professional debut for Watford in May 2010, and went on to make a further eight appearances for the Hornets before going on loan to Yeovil and United during the 2011-12 season, before making his U’s spell permanent in August 2012. During his time with the U’s Massey made over 150 appearances for the club, scoring 21 goals in all competitions.

Alberto Cavasin was appointed first team manager on October 2, 2016, and penned a two-year deal in E10. Cavasin, whose management career spans over 21 years, has managed a number of Serie A clubs in his native country and also picked up the Panchina D'Oro award for the Italian Coach of the Year in Serie A whilst at Lecce in 2000. The 60-year-old former right back started his playing career with hometown club Treviso in 1973, of whom he also started his first team management career with in 1990 following his retirement as a player.

Powerful forward Palmer became Orient’s fifth summer signing of 2015 when he signed on a two-year deal. Palmer began his career at Woking and made a number of substitute appearances for the first team before moving to Havant & Waterlooville in 2011. The striker spent two years at The Hawks and it was during his second season that he bagged 25 goals during the 2012-13 season to be named the Conference South’s Player of the Year having finished as the division’s top scorer. Palmer’s impressive form led to Mansfield securing his signature for an undisclosed fee that summer and scored his first goal for the club in a 1-0 victory at Wycombe in August 2013, which was subsequently the clubs first goal since making their return to the Football League. The 2014-15 season was to be frustrating for Palmer at Mansfield however as he made the majority of his appearances from the bench but impressed with eight goals in 15 appearances on loan at Grimsby Town.

He amassed 77 appearances in two seasons with the club scoring four goals including a memorable long range strike against Aston Villa in a 3-0 League Cup win at Belle Vue. LEGEND, WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Kitchen is somewhat of a cult hero at Doncaster after scoring 89 goals in just over 200 appearances for the club over a successful seven year period, including a goal at Anfield in the famous FA Cup draw with Liverpool. He signed for Orient from Rovers in 1977 for a fee of £40,000 and went on to continue his fine goal-scoring form netting 28 in 65 games before moving on to Fulham and in turn Cardiff City. After three years away Kitchen returned for a second spell with the O’s which proved just as fruitful as he scored 21 goals in two years with the club. He now has a banner up in the south stand at the Keepmoat and also has a book out called the ‘Goal Gourmet.’

Rovers Back RAINBOW LACES CAMPAIGN Doncaster Rovers have joined Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign to show that lesbian, gay, bi and trans people are welcome at every level of sport and that homophobia is unacceptable. Thousands of people across Britain, from fans to players, will lace up this weekend as part of a UK-wide campaign to make sport everyone’s game.

22 Box Office: 01302 762576

The Rainbow Laces weekend follows research by ICM that reveals homophobic language is still regularly heard at live sporting events. 72 per cent of football fans have heard anti-LGBT remarks at live games in the past five years. Despite this, the majority of people support LGBT people in sport according to the research, with nearly two-thirds (59 per cent) saying more should be done to make LGBT people feel accepted. This weekend Stonewall, the leading charity for lesbian, gay, bi and trans equality, is calling on fans, players and governing bodies to visibly show their support for LGBT people in sport. Rovers are one of dozens of football clubs backing the campaign, which has been endorsed by Premiership Rugby, the Premier

League, the English Football League and the Football Association. Gavin Baldwin, Rovers’ chief executive, said: “We can’t let the minority of fans spoil the game. We’re supporting the campaign to show that at Rovers we do not accept anti-LGBT chants, language or behaviour. “We want to make sport everyone’s game and show that football welcomes players and fans, no matter who they are.” Ruth Hunt, Stonewall’s chief executive, said: “Such high-profile support is crucial for lesbian, gay, bi and trans people who want to take part in sport, either as players or fans, but feel unsafe, unwelcome or unable to be themselves. We need fans, players, clubs and governing bodies to stand up as allies so that we can make sport everyone’s game. “Homophobic abuse has absolutely no place in sport, either at grass roots or professional level, yet there is a persistent, and vocal, minority who believe anti-LGBT language is harmless. “The majority of people believe homophobic chants and abuse are a problem, and this weekend is about encouraging that majority to step up and show they will not stand for this abuse.”

Respect TEAM OF THE MONTH AWARD This season Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA has launched a RESPECT Team of the Month award and today, October’s winning team, FC Cumberland, have joined us at Keepmoat Stadium to receive their award.

38

We also welcome presentatives from the Doncaster Sunday Alliance League who nominated them for the award following a very positive report received by the League from a referee that highlighted the team’s excellent attitude and behaviour on and off the pitch.

Box Office: 01302 762576

FC Cumberland applauded good play by their opponents and did not get into any arguments or disagreements. The team supported all decisions made by the referee and at the end of the game every player shook hands with opponents and referee. When told of the news John Steele from Doncaster Sunday Alliance League said: “That is excellent news and well deserved. “FC Cumberland have been in the league for a while now. All teams should look to follow the example they set as being a well-run team and club, I really admire them.”

Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA Assistant Football Development Officer Jade Elson commented: “This is a fantastic example of good sportsmanship within the game and something all teams should aspire to. "The players and club officials are a credit to their club, league and the game.” Earlier this week S&HCFA presented the club with a match ball and Respect merchandise and today, pitch side, the club will receive a trophy and certificate which will be presented by John Steele from the Doncaster Sunday Alliance League and Roger Reade from the County FA. Rovers came from behind to salvage a point in a game that the home side created more than enough chances to win. Rovers went ahead on the half hour mark though a neat finish by Lewis Scattergood, but a Chesterfield goal on the stroke of half-time after an initial save by the goalkeeper meant that the teams were level going into the break. Despite a much improved performance in the second half, Rovers fell victim to a Chesterfield goal in the 85th minute, and it looked to be a bitter end to an impressive performance. But, in a thrilling finale, Rovers managed to salvage a point from the match in the dying moments, as Jacob Fletcher emphatically converted a penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. “Going 2-1 down at such a late stage, it could have been very easy just to think, it’s not our day. But we kept going and got a point, so I think the team showed really great character,” Academy head Kieran Scarff said. “The youngsters need to learn the importance of consistency, because if they played the way they did in the second half for another 30 minutes, they would have won the game comfortably. “We need to be more clinical, and more ruthless. We created a lot of chances in the second half and probably deserved to win.”

ROVERS XI | Leverton, Walker, Bingley, Dunnet, Amos, Fletcher, James, Prior, Overton, Morris, Scattergood. BENCH | Townrow, Ogley, Barnett, Horton.

Kieran SCARFF I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thankyou to Suzanne Uttley who has, this week, moved from her role in the football administration department into a role in our ticket office. In my first few months Suzanne has been a great support and her organisation and support has been excellent and of huge benefit to me in the first few months in my role.

Ernie has already been hard at work talking to local clubs and looking to build positive and supportive relationships with many people in the local area. Ernie will undoubtedly provide a real drive and enthusiasm in this department and I wish him all the best in his role. Good luck to the Gaffer, the staff and the players today! Kieran

47 Box Office: 01302 762576

With Suzanne moving into another department I am delighted to welcome Shelley Tonge into the role of academy secretary within the football administration department. Shelley joins us from Barnsley where she has accumulated a number of years of knowledge and experience. I know the level of input Shelley will provide will be of huge significance as we continue to work to develop and grow our academy programme. Shelley will work under the guidance of Mary Lally, our club secretary. Mary does a great job in making sure we are all organised her input is another major contributing factor to our aims and aspirations.

Another new arrival on the staffing front has seen the arrival of Ernie Oliver as head of academy recruitment. Ernie brings with him many, many years of experience as a player, coach, manager and scout. Most recently Ernie has been working in the recruitment department at Sheffield Wednesday and we are delighted to have been able to secure his services. Recruiting players with the required potential is absolutely vital as we strive to increase the numbers of players that come through our Academy programme into the first team.

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 10 - By John Coyle

50 Box Office: 01302 762576

Having secured a visit to Oldham in the FA Cup with their midweek win at Accrington, Rovers turned their thoughts to Football League matters. On Saturday December 7 1946 they travelled to Sincil Bank to face Lincoln City. They would have to do so without full-back Jim Wooldridge, who had suffered a muscle strain in the midweek replay. Bill Corbett, who began his career as a goalkeeper but now played at full-back, deputised. Leslie Owens kept his place with Jackie Thompson still injured. Line up: Archie Ferguson; Ernie Swallow, Bill Corbett; Cecil Stirland, Sid Bycroft, Bob McFarlane; Jackie Kirkaldie, Leslie Owens, Clarrie Jordan, Paul Todd, Ralph Maddison.

pulled one back, Maddison scrambling the ball home from close range. Then just before the break they were level. Bycroft took a free-kick midway inside the Lincoln half and spotting the home goalkeeper Daniels out of position he struck it low and hard into the corner of the net. Seven minutes into the second half, Rovers were ahead, Owens dribbling round three defenders and then shooting past Daniels. Todd’s quick thinking enabled him to make it 4-2 after 64 minutes and the turnaround was completed when Jordan got the better of his marker Johnson to make it 5-2 after 70 minutes. A late goal by Cheetham was no more than a consolation for the home side and Rovers retained a two point lead over Chester at the top of Division Three (North). In 1946 it was unusual for footballers to spend time away from home other than on match days, but with a FA Cup tie and a busy festive programme looming,

Ralph MADDISON

Rovers were rather shocked to find themselves 2-0 down before 20 minutes had been completed, Marlow and Stillyard scoring for Lincoln. They soon

Oldham were 11th in the league, but promised to give Rovers a tough test on a heavy pitch. Jordan had an early appeal for a penalty rejected while at the

51 Box Office: 01302 762576

played manager Jackie Bestall and trainer Bob McLean took their charges away to Skegness. They stayed at the Lumley Hotel and enjoyed a mixture of training and relaxation before travelling to Manchester on the Friday. A party of 18 travelled, including Wooldridge and Thompson, but neither was fit to play at Boundary Park, Oldham on Saturday December 14, when same team that at Lincoln took on Athletic.

other end Corbett had to clear after Tomlinson’s shot was parried by Ferguson. Oldham took the lead after 44 minutes when Hormanby’s cross was headed past Ferguson by Bowden. Early in the second half Rovers missed a chance to level when Harris saved at the feet of Todd, but on the hour they did make it 1-1. Kirkaldie got past two men and centred and although the ball was scrambled clear it reached McFarlane whose low shot was turned in by Jordan. Oldham claimed the ball had not crossed the line, but the referee was happy to award the goal. Action continued at both ends, Jordan hitting a post and Ferguson saving well from Burns and Waite. Then, with eight minutes left, Rovers were ahead. Owens crossed from the right and Maddison leapt highest to head past Harris. Even then, the drama was not over. Tomlinson was fouled in the Rovers’ box and a penalty was awarded, but Waite shot wide from the spot. Rovers then had the ball in the net, but Owens’ effort was ruled out for offside. A breathless Cup tie ended in a 2-1 win for Rovers and they would await Monday’s third round draw with anticipation.

BELLES

The WSL Spring Series is designed to bridge the gap between the end of the FA WSL 2016 season in November and the start of the next full season, which will begin in September 2017. Since 2011 the FA Women’s Super League has been played over the summer, with the season running from February until October. The women’s game is now going back to a more traditional September-May calendar, starting in 2017/18.

52 Box Office: 01302 762576

We have had a hectic few weeks fixtures wise, we were knocked out of the FA Cup at ice station Zebra, aka Oldham, but progressed into the next round of the Checkatrade Trophy, with a home tie to look forward to against Blackpool. Should we progress then it iis no longer on a regional basis, so we could get an away tie at somewhere like Plymouth - not really a good way to get more fans interested, if it’s not broken don’t fix it. Our game against Stevenage has now been moved from this Tuesday , to next Saturday, as both clubs have been knocked out of the FA Cup. I feel sorry for the fans that have pre booked their train tickets but the club having been offering something to those affected. The following Saturday, December 10 , we have another long trip to Plymouth , coaches dep Retford 6.45am, Harworth 6.50am, Rossington 7am, Infirmary 7.15am and Keepmoat Stadium 8am, coach prices are £27 adult, £25 concessions, add £2 for non-members. Hope you enjoy the game Rovers till we Die Paul Mayfield

While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. Recently the Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the Football League and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the Supporters Trust at that club. The EFL issued a new league rule informing clubs of the minimum requirement for meeting with supporters and the kind of topics that should be included. That new rule came into force for the 2016/17 season. As you may be aware the club hold two ‘Meet The Owners’ events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have initiated a ‘Supporters Board’ which meets on a monthly basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. It is early days for this new Board, but so far the signs are very encouraging in that nothing has been held back and the trust between club and supporters is evident. As the meetings progress we hope to be able to announce the progress that has been made. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the new requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. IRWT
