Darren Ferguson Good evening and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium for the visit of Portsmouth. I would like to welcome the fans, manager, players and staff of the visitors who have made the long journey up. Pompey are a very good team and we know will provide a real test for us.
I had a good feeling going into the game, the players’ concentration in the pre match meeting and on the training ground was outstanding having played a game just 24 hours earlier. I had no hesitation in playing Conor Grant, having signed him on loan from Everton. He really impressed me during his loan last season and I am delighted we have secured his services again as he is a Championship quality player. I have to thank the board for
I am delighted to have done our January transfer business nice and early, with Alfie May also joining us from Hythe. Reece Fielding and Will Longbottom have signed professional deals, and we have high hopes for both of them. I would also like to thank Riccardo Calder, who has returned to Aston Villa after his loan spell and Frazer Richardson who has left after his deal ran its course. Both have fantastic attitudes and have contributed to getting us where we are now. Enjoy the game

I was pleased with Monday’s win against a tough Stevenage side. We had to be patient, but there was a determination to keep doing what we were doing and eventually that bit of quality paid off so credit to the players for that.
their support – they backed me and we really went after him, to the point that we had a bid accepted for a permanent transfer which shows the ambition we have as a club.

Gavin Baldwin I would like to thank every fan who filled in the In Rovers We Trust survey launched by the supporters board. By the time we closed the survey we had almost 600 responses, which gives us plenty of informative feedback for our off-the-field team to analyse.
Games come thick and fast over the Christmas period, and I would like to thank everyone who has made the effort to follow us across this period. Our travelling support this season has been first class, and I know it has been appreciated by the players and staff.
Fan engagement is something we are very proud of at Club Doncaster, and In Rovers We Trust is a sign of our long-standing commitment to it. I am sure the supporters board will work with our club staff to ensure future developments are tailored to what fans want.
Our off-field staff have also worked hard over Christmas to ensure our games can go ahead smoothly and the players are all prepared – the “team behind the team” are a big part of this club’s success. We are now into the second half of the season and firmly established in the top three - going back top after Monday’s win. This is a fantastic position to be starting 2017 in as we seek to achieve promotion straight back to Sky Bet League One.
Enjoy tonight’s game
Gavin

Children from across the Doncaster Borough were invited to the Keepmoat Stadium when Doncaster Rovers hosted Grimsby Town. Schools that work with Club Doncaster Foundation were given the chance to reward the students who have shown tremendous commitment to their studies through attendance of at least 97 per cent with tickets to matches. The ‘attendance for attendance’ scheme also allows parents to accompany their child to the game at a discounted rate and will continue through to the New Year to encourage children to work hard every day at school. Community co-ordinator for school sport Kelly Jackson has been delighted with the response of the schools involved and hopes that their attendance percentage continues to improve. “When we go into schools with the mascot Donny Dog to explain attendance for attendance, you can just see the excitement on the children’s faces,” she said. “A lot of them are Doncaster Rovers fans so it just makes their day. It’s great to reward the students that already work really hard in their studies but also it acts as a great incentive for the ones that could improve. They see their friends being rewarded for hard work and commitment and then they want to work hard too.” The schools across Doncaster that work with Club Doncaster Foundation have a significant link to the club and are offered exclusive privileges including stadium visits, signed merchandise and of course excellently delivered coaching sessions from the community coaches. Andy WILLIAMS
Rovers’ free-scoring frontline have proven themselves among the great entertainers of Sky Bet League Two, and Andy Williams is enjoying being part of a side that is getting so many goals. A foot injury suffered after grabbing a late winner against Barnet meant an enforced break, but he quickly settled back into the side on his return last month.

sometimes you can be too nice as a footballer and now we have a bit more edge about us. “John really helps with that. He is good to have around the place – off the pitch he is a good laugh, chatty and chirpy, but on the pitch he demands high standards and that is what we are hopefully providing everyone at the moment.”
Box Office: 01302 762576
“Being injured is the most frustrating thing in football, so it’s nice to be back playing, being involved with the lads and getting a few goals,” he says.
Football is riddled with stories of players who were given a first-team chance due to someone’s injury or suspension, and Liam Mandeville certainly made the most of his chance to provide cover for Williams.
“It was literally the last kick of the game in a match where I’d scored a late winner. I was in quite a lot of pain and knew straight away it was bad, but thankfully It was not quite as bad as we thought so I got back a bit quicker than the doctors thought I would.
“Everyone that had been at the club knew it was going to come, he is a very talented young man and a great lad. He listens and learns, and works hard, and he is a good role model for the young kids coming through at the club,” says Williams.
“Getting a goal in my first start back against Blackpool was pleasing. It was a game we wanted to win and progress, unfortunately we couldn’t quite manage that but it was nice to get off the mark.”
“There can be a tendency in football to be mollycoddled a little bit, but Liam breaks that mould. All the senior pros are fond of him because his attitude is spot on. His hard work is paying off, and you can see on the pitch everything he touches at the moment is going in.
The injury – sustained while scoring the winning goal against Barnet in early October - came at a bad time for Williams. His partnership with John Marquis was one of the highlights of the early part of the season, and was stopped in its tracks by his absence. “It was really good. At the start of the season we were set up well, our games complement each other,” says Williams. “He likes to go short and I tend to go long. It was just starting to progress when I got injured. “He brings something I think we missed massively last year. He is of a young age, 24, but he is very demanding out on the pitch. We have a really good group of lads, but
“It is great for the team that we have this competition for places. Liam came in and has done really well, he and John have formed a bit of a partnership as well. So I know I have to work hard to get into the team.” This evening’s game concludes the festive schedule for Rovers, with the fourth game since Boxing Day. It is a busy period for footballers which means they don’t get to tuck in to quite as much turkey and chocolate as the rest of us – but it is a sacrifice the players are happy to make. “At home, when everyone else is drinking, partying and eating what they want we have to

manage what we eat, we definitely can’t drink alcohol and have to look after our body as well as we can so we can recover as quickly as possible,” says Williams. “But it’s not really much of a gripe when you have the best job possible, over the course of the year you can’t really complain. Our training is curtailed a bit because of the fixtures, we do a lot more video analysis and work off the training pitch rather than running around.
That good start leaves Rovers just above their target of two points per game – a tally manager Darren Ferguson believes would secure automatic promotion. The players are confident because of the results in the first half of the campaign, but know there is plenty of hard work to turn the promising start into something they can celebrate come May. “It’s looking good. Our aim at the start of the season was to be up there, and I don’t think we’ve seen anybody in the league that we should fear,” adds Williams. “There are some good teams, but Plymouth are top and we went there and dominated. I’d like to think promotion is on the cards, but it is up to us to keep our foot and the gas and keep expecting from each other. “I know it’s a cliché, but we’ve got to just look after ourselves: if we keep the standards high then we’ve got a great chance.”
13 Box Office: 01302 762576
“It is always an important time of the year. Because we have had a good start it is perhaps not so make and break, but if we do well it can really kick us on and maybe push us away from a few teams which would be brilliant. It is important we try not to pick up injuries with a lot of games in a short space of time, want to ensure everyone stays fit, and hopefully we’ll be in a really good position.”

Forde became Ireland’s No.1 in 2013 after the retirement of Shay Given, he was played a big part in Martin O’Neill’s side that qualified for Euro 2016 but he was overlooked for the final 23-man squad that went to France.

Forde is also only one appearance away from 300 league outings for his parent club Millwall.

Experienced midfield maestro Gary Roberts started his footballing career in the Welsh Premier League, plying his trade with Bangor City, Rhyl and Welshpool Town before breaking into English football with Crewe Alexandra. He moved on from the Railywaymen to Accrington Stanley, making his debut against Morecambe in a 2-1 win over the Shrimpers in March 2005, a week later he had scored his first goal for the club which came against York City in a 2-2 draw the Crown Ground. Roberts, was loaned out to Championship side Ipswich Town in the 2006/07 season, the move was made permanent during that January transfer window for an undisclosed fee. He achieved promotion to the Championship with Huddersfield Town, as they managed to beat fellow Yorkshire side Sheffield United on penalties at Wembley after goalkeeper Steve Simonsen blasted the decisive penalty over the bar. The midfielder would add another promotion to his CV later on in his career, as he would go up as champion of League Two with Chesterfield in 2014.
MIDFIELD MAESTRO

Cook moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers for ÂŁ250,000. He became a cult hero at the club during his five years at Molineux, turning out for the Wanderers more than 200 times before moving on to play for Coventry City, Tranmere Rovers, Accrington Stanley, Burnley, Stockport County and Wigan Athletic, before hanging up his boots in 2006. His first trophies as a manager came in 2010, leading Sligo Rovers to the Irish League Cup and the FAI Cup, they also managed to retain a season later. Cook also managed Accrington Stanley and Chesterfield before taking charge at Fratton Park.
02 | TOM DAVIES
DEFENSIVE ROCK Twenty-four-year-old Tom Davies has spent majority of his early playing career in English non-league. He began his career at Manchester United, spending four seasons at the Red Devils before moving to Blackburn Rovers for three years. After his contract at Ewood Park ran out he moved back to Lancashire - joining FC.United of Manchester in 2013. He made 27 league appearances in the Northern Premier League Division before returning to the Football League with Fleetwood. He went back on loan for some of the 2013/14 season, with further temporary moves to Alfreton, Lincoln and Southport. He moved to Accrington Stanley in the summer of 2015, making 38 appearances before joining Portsmouth for this season.
Michael Smith is originally from Wallsend in the north east of England and began his footballing career with Darlington in League Two, before joining Workington on loan. He made his Football League debut for the Quakers in 2010 in a 1-0 defeat to Hereford, Smith scored his first goal for the club on the penultimate league game of the season. The forward scored the second in a 2-0 win over Greater-Manchester side Macclesfield Town, bu only spent one season at the Darlington Arena before moving onto Charlton Athletic. He made two appearances for the Addicks before loan spells at Gillingham, AFC Wimbledon, Colchester United and Newport County. He signed for Swindon Town on a permanent basis for a fee of ÂŁ100,000, marking his debut with two goals against Shrewsbury Town in January 2014. Due to the change in management at the Keepmoat Stadium, Dumbuya found himself surplus to requirements, he was loaned out to Crystal Palace before transferring to Pompey on a permanent basis. While it was only a short stay down at Fratton Park during the 2012/13 season, Dumbuya was certainly held in high regard due to his willingness to play for the side during a time of financial difficulty and he also impressed the fans with his performances.
Joe LAIDLAW
LEGEND, WHERE ARE THEY NOW
Midfielder Joe Laidlaw began a three year spell with Billy Bremner’s Rovers in 1976, where he would go onto spend three seasons with the South Yorkshire side. Laidlaw originally started his footballing life in Middlesbrough, making more than 100 appearances for Boro before moving onto Carlisle United in 1972. After finding the net on 27 occasions and making more than 130 appearancess within three years, he joined Portsmouth for £15,000 but would only stay for one season. Laidlaw retired from football in 1982 and went on to manage Fareham Town and Chichester respectively, the ex-Pompey man is occasionally found in the press box at Fratton Park, providing his expert knowledge for Express FM.
Club NEWS Rovers can confirm the signing of forward Alfie May. The 23-year-old has agreed a two-and-a-half year contract at the Keepmoat Stadium, and officially completed his move from Hythe Town on January 1 2017.
“It is a big step, but I feel confident I can play in League Two and training every day will only improve me. “I’ve done really well in non-league with Hythe, I’ve felt they’ve really got the best out of me, but working with Darren Ferguson as manager is different – I reckon he can get goals out of me too.”
May spent a week on trial with Rovers earlier in the season and, after being impressed by the players, staff and facilities, said it was an easy decision to accept the contract offer which followed. He said: “From the minute I met the players, they came out their way to ask where I was from and introducing themselves. It made it so much easier and took a lot of weight off my shoulders.
17 Box Office: 01302 762576
Rovers will pay Hythe an undisclosed fee for the player, who chose a move to South Yorkshire despite interest from a number of other EFL clubs.

Club NEWS Jordan Houghton and Niall Mason are determined to seal promotion, after extending their stays at the Keepmoat Stadium until the end of the season. The players, on loan from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively, have both been key figures in the first-team. Three Sky Bet League One clubs were interested in Houghton, but he was happy to commit his immediate future to Rovers.

He said: “I’ve enjoyed every moment since I’ve been here, I’ve moved up and am settled up here. It helps that I’m playing every week, and hopefully that can continue for the rest of the season.
Box Office: 01302 762576
“There were three clubs interested in League One, but I never had my head turned because I want to finish off the good start to the season we have. I want to get that promotion and hopefully win the title. “It was the right decision for me, and all the parties I think. Chelsea were happy for me to stay because I’m playing. And I’m happy because I’m enjoying it, and hopefully Doncaster are enjoying it as I’m part of a winning side.” For Niall, it was also an easy decision to remain at the club. The 19-year-old is relishing his first real period of first-team football. He said: “I’ve had a really good time since I’ve
been here, and had a really good experience. I can’t wait for the coming months now. “Promotion is the target, to keep the performances we know gets us results and win as many games as possible. “We need to keep maintaining those standards to ensure we get over the line. I want to keep playing every game and try to keep performing well. “It is gaining a bit of confidence, knowing I can play first-team football which is brand-new to me.” Jordan grabbed his first goal for the club in the win over Leyton Orient, and is hoping he can contribute at both ends of the field in the second part of the campaign. He added: “If I can pop up with a few goals now and again, it is something I hope to add to my game even when playing as holding midfielder. “When we dominate games that gives me licence to get forward – when we have more of the ball and are in the opponent’s half. That allows me to get some shots off. “I like to set high standards in every game I play, I want to be consistent. That’s something I hope to carry on for the rest of my career. There are little things I want to improve, and the manager is helping me to do that. I’ll go back to Chelsea as a better player.”
Hospital VISIT Doncaster Rovers players handed out presents in the children’s ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary as part of their annual Christmas visit. Andy Butler, Tommy Rowe, Andy Williams, Mathieu Baudry visited the hospital before Christmas. The players handed out presents which were bought after a collection from Rovers’ staff, while the players made a further donation.
Club captain Butler said: “The players look forward to this visit above any other in the year, as they get to meet some truly inspirational young people.
Lesley Musk, senior sister at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals commented: “On behalf of the Trust I’d like to say a huge thank you to Doncaster Rovers for their generosity and taking time out of their busy schedule to visit the Hospital School and children’s wards. “It’s a lovely thing to do, especially when children are in hospital over the Christmas period, they miss out on what’s happening in school and parties, so when the players come in it’s such a special experience for them – providing a much needed boost when they are poorly at Christmas.”
23 Box Office: 01302 762576
This money will be used to buy a light desk which is particularly useful for children with special needs, but will be used by all children on the wards.
“It’s great to see the smiles on their faces and we hope to be back before too long in the New Year to see how everyone is doing.” The Rovers players were joined by Doncaster Rugby League prop Connor Scott and chief executive Carl Hall.

Kieran SCARFF In my previous programme notes I have spoken about the level of support linked to the development of our young players. My first few months as Academy Manager have been very positive. The support I have had from so many people makes the future certainly very exciting.
Both Andy and James Coppinger have been pivotal in the development of a mentoring programme which will see each youth team player having their own first- team mentor who will spend time with them, each week, providing support and guidance in their development.
In addition to this Andy and James are actively encouraging players to spend some time with our younger age groups. Again, I know the players will really value their input and encouragement. This level of involvement provides further evidence of our whole club approach. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Andy, James and the rest of their squad for their support. Our youth team fixtures begin again this Saturday away to Mansfield, while our Academy fixtures begin again this Sunday with matches against Scunthorpe. Good luck to the gaffer, staff and players ahead of today’s game. Kieran
The willingness of the players to provide this support is hugely appreciated. The impact of

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 13 - By John Coyle
50 Box Office: 01302 762576
Ahead of their FA Cup Third Round tie at home to Portsmouth, Rovers travelled to Skegness where they were again accommodated at the Lumley Hotel. Their seaside break had done them good in the run up to the previous tie at Oldham and it was hoped it would again give them the impetus to win. Jim Wooldridge and Leslie Owens were still injured but others were making good progress under the watchful eye of the veteran trainer Bob McLean. Snow fell across the north during the week and disrupted the Rovers’ training as well as threatening the Cup tie. However, by Saturday 11th January 1947 a thaw had set in and cleared the snow, although the Belle Vue pitch was very heavy. Jackie Thompson returned from injury and replaced Frank Mitcheson, the only change to the team that had drawn with New Brighton. Line up: Archie Ferguson; Ernie Swallow, Bill Corbett; Cecil Stirland, Sid Bycroft, Bob McFarlane; Jackie Kirkaldie, Jackie Thompson, Clarrie Jordan, Paul Todd, Ralph Maddison. A crowd of 24,129, Rovers’ best of the season, assembled to watch the First Division side, which included former Rovers winger Cliff Parker.
Rovers almost took the lead through Maddison’s close range effort before Portsmouth struck on 13 minutes. Parker’s cross was Ralph MADDISON dropped by Ferguson and Froggatt slotted the ball into the empty net. Some slick interplay between Dickinson and Parker then set up Evans whose fierce shot made it 2-0 to the visitors. Rovers were shaken but with heavy rain falling they managed to gain a foothold in the match. Kirkaldie just failed to reach a ball from Jordan and then with half time approaching Thompson’s clever run set up Kirkaldie who pulled a goal back, shooting in via a post. Rovers changed into dry shirts for the second half, although they were soon soaked again by the heavy rain. Jordan had the ball in the net but was flagged offside. After 60 minutes Rovers suffered a hammer blow when Froggatt beat the offside trap and ran in to score from an acute angle. Rovers were still fighting, though, and with 13 minutes left Todd shot home from close range. Despite a strong finish Portsmouth held on to win
3-2. Rovers were out of the FA Cup, but could hold their heads high.
51 Box Office: 01302 762576
A week later they travelled to The Shay to take on bottom of the table Halifax Town. Rovers fielded the same side that had Ernie lost so narrowly to SWALLOW Portsmouth but found themselves behind when Swallow turned a shot from Massey into his own net. Maddison equalised with a good goal before the interval and when Todd put them ahead five minutes into the second half another two points seemed to be heading to Belle Vue. However, Rovers were shattered by two goals in the space of a minute. On 56 minutes Ferguson let England’s long shot squirm over the line and then a
minute later Walters put the home side back in front. To make matters worse Thompson then missed a penalty and Rovers were punished when Walters made it 4-2 with ten minutes remaining. Rovers had therefore suffered only their second League defeat of the season, the first away from home.
Jackie THOMSON
Archie FERGUSON
Paul TODD
Despite the defeat, Rovers retained a three point lead at the top of Division Three North. Rotherham United, who beat Hull City 2-0 to maintain their 100% home record, were emerging as the biggest threat with Chester slipping away. At least Rovers had the chance to make amends with a rearranged game at Crewe on the coming Wednesday.

Rovers Family Doncaster Rovers Supporters Club Good afternoon and welcome to the all the Portsmouth supporters who have made the long trip up up north on a Thursday night for the game. I hope they enjoy the visit to the Keepmoat Stadium. It does not seem 10 years since we moved to the Keepmoat Stadium, with Mark McCammon scoring that first goal against Huddersfield. We have seen many a good game in that time, but personally I miss Belle Vue, we have had the success of the play-offs and cup games, seen managers come and go, but we the fans will always be behind the club.
