Darren Ferguson

Last Saturday at Blackpool was a disappointing day for us. But we’ve moved on from that, as soon as Monday morning came and went we were focused on today’s game. I have to say we have much to be positive about and if we get a win today then we are going to keep ourselves right on target. We have won three of our past four League games, which is promotion form, and I have to say I have been delighted with the players over the season. We have to make sure we build on the home form, which has been good. That home record will be important this season. We have players coming back

from injuries, too, so if we get a positive result today we would be able to look back on a good October and going into the final two-thirds of the season in confident mood. Wycombe will not make it easy for us today, though. They are a very fit and hard-working team. They have plenty of experience and did well last season. They will look to get about us and we will have to compete physically.

05

We will look to move the ball quickly and be aggressive off the ball. The players know I expect a good performance today and I am sure you will get 100 per cent from them as we look to finish the month strongly.

Box Office: 01302 762576

Good afternoon and welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium for today’s game against Wycombe Wanderers. I’d like to welcome Gareth Ainsworth, the players, fans, staff and directors of the visitors who have travelled up from Buckinghamshire.

Enjoy the game.

Gavin Baldwin I’d like to welcome you all back to the Keepmoat Stadium today and welcome the directors, fans, staff and players of Wycombe Wanderers. I hope you enjoy your visit to South Yorkshire and have a safe journey home afterwards.

The result at Bloomfield Road was disappointing, but should be seen in the context of a good start to the season which leaves us third in Sky Bet League Two. We know today will not be easy, but with the best home record in the EFL I am sure the players and backroom staff will give everything to build on that.

Speaking of events, I’m assured this year’s Big Bang will be even bigger and better than last year’s. We’ll be holding it here at the Keepmoat Stadium from 5pm on the evening of Friday November 4, and advance tickets are available now from our Box Office or the British Heart Foundation store on Printing Office Street. These cost £2 so you get a discount from the price on the gate, and don’t have to queue on the night. Enjoy this afternoon’s game.

Gavin

07 Chief Executives Comments

We have had a busy few weeks, with a lot of our hard work coming to fruition. We had a crowd of 7,398 join us to watch England Women take on France on Friday October 21. The Football Association were very happy with the welcome they received both from our staff and local football fans. We wish Mark Sampson’s side well in next summer’s European Championship.

This week we installed a new ticketing system which we believe will give supporters far greater flexibility with regards to watching Rovers, the Dons or Belles as well as attending other Club Doncaster events. This will work better across mobile and desktop and help us tailor offers to supporters, so please do make sure your contact details are correct the next time you pop into the Box Office.

The Club Doncaster Foundation team were delighted to be joined by England international Jade Moore and Rovers club captain Andy Butler at their Hungerhill School girl’s football session. The pair supported the launch of the foundation’s Premier League girls’ delivery, which will see more opportunities for girls across Doncaster to access football. Moore, who actually kicked off her career with Doncaster Rovers Belles, relished her return to the town. She feels the direction of women’s football at the moment is something to be excited about. “To see so many girls turn up to a cold and wet Thursday afternoon session speaks volumes,” she said. “I’ve spoken to a lot of people about how much women’s football has achieved over the last few years - it’s exciting. With all the work that is being done and sessions like these, hopefully the game will only continue to grow. “It’s nice to come somewhere local, for the girls to understand and see that their dreams and aspirations are reachable. “For them to see that I just live around the corner, it shows the dream of playing for England can come true no matter where you’re from.” Also in attendance was Andy, an ambassador for Sports Participation and Education, who helped run the session as a guest coach. The girls were keen to impress the skipper with their skills and after the session they had the chance to ask him their burning questions. He said: “I’m proud to come down here and support the launch. Women’s football is definitely on the rise and anything we can do to boost that is a bonus. “It’s great to host England Internationals at the Keepmoat, hopefully between Jade and I we inspired some of the girls to be at the game but also put on their boots themselves at the sessions run by Club Doncaster Foundation.” For more information of the new women and girls programme at the Club Doncaster Foundation visit www.clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk or phone 01302 764663.

Foundation NCS AUTUMN PROGRAMME The Club Doncaster Sports College students have just returned from their NCS residential visit to Hawkshead in the Lake District. It is the second year running that the NCS autumn programme has been offered to the students, showcasing the partnership between the two departments. Ninety students embarked on the adventure where they tried their hand at adrenaline filled challenges such as rock climbing, kayaking, hiking and archery. They returned to home soil to workshops delivered at the Keepmoat Stadium by the Dame Kelly Homes Trust and volunteered in a range of social action projects which all had a real impact on the local community.

“The personal development, employability and social action aspects of the programme give added value to the courses they are studying and enhance the Club Doncaster sports College experience.”

They too will explore the depths of the Lake District before returning to learn invaluable workplace skills and showcase them through social action projects to help the community. Tom Foy, NCS officer is delighted to offer the programme to the college and hopes the relationship continues to blossom. He said: “It’s great that we can take full advantage of being on the doorstep of the college and come together in this autumn partnership. “The programme is such an indispensable thing to add to your CV, it gives you life skills you can’t learn in the classroom as well as giving you the confidence to take into working life or further education.” The NCS programme is open to all 15-17 year olds; opening in the spring and summer holidays to the public and gives them a real opportunity to grow their existing skills. To find out more information on NCS or to sign up for the next adventure contact programme manager Jan Budtz on jan.budtz@clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk or visit the website www.clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk

Principal of the Sports College Adi Turnpenny explained the importance of diversity within their courses. He said: “NCS gives our new students a great opportunity to get to know each other while participating in exciting outdoor activities.

More than 100 first year students will participate in the partnership between education and NCS next autumn.

Brilliant aren’t they?” Purred defender Andy Butler – rather less menacingly. You are going to lose games, but its how you learn from them and bounce back. That’s the main point we’re trying to get across, it’s not going to be a plain sailing league but we aim to win more than we lose. “The bus journey home wasn’t nice and we all knew that we didn’t play to what we are capable of, so it was time to reflect and have a few words with each other and what we can improve on. We’ve reviewed it on Monday and that’s as much as we can do. There’s no point dwelling on it now as it’s gone. Nothing will change the result.” Of greater meaning to Butler than tainting his 100th Doncaster Rovers appearance with that loss on the

The 22-year-old stands at 6’6” tall. An England under 19 international on a half-season loan from Chelsea, Blackman has had previous loan spells with Middlesbrough and Swedish side Ostersunds. Chelsea showed how much they value the young ‘keeper when they tied him down to a new five year-contract in 2014. He won the FA Youth Cup with his parent club and will see Wycombe as the perfect stepping stone in order to make his name in both professional football and the Football League. Blackman made his debut against Accrington in August and could come up against fellow Chelsea loanee Jordan Houghton at the Keepmoat.

Thompson joined Wycombe in the summer of 2015 with a number of former clubs in his CV including Barnsley and Scunthorpe. He’s a seasoned pro at the age of 35 and his experience of playing in higher divisions can only benefit Wanderers. Thompson has won promotion with three different clubs: Scunthorpe, Morecambe and Bradford, as well as bagging a goal against Arsenal in a League Cup quarter-final for the Bantams back in 2013. A tricky midfielder who can play on either flank as well as a number 10, Rovers will be mindful of his technical ability whenever he gets on the ball.

MIDFIELD MAESTRO

The 43-year-old Ainsworth became permanent manager of Wycombe in April 2013 following a spell as a player with the club and then caretaker manager. The appointment of him as manager brought an end to his playing career for a while before earlier on this season when he laced his boots back up and played for the club in the EFL Trophy away at Northampton. Ainsworth led the club to the League Two play-off final back in 2015 where they eventually lost on penalties to Southend following a 1-1 draw in normal time. His most successful playing spell came with Queens Park Rangers where he made 141 appearances for the R’s and scored 36 goals.

20 | ADEBAYO AKINFENWA

‘Bayo’ will need no introduction to the majority of Rovers’ fans who will look back with fond memories to the striker’s short stint at Belle Vue in the promotion season of 2003/04. The beast, as he is regarded throughout football, scored four goals in just nine appearances before moving on to pastures new. Since then, Akinfenwa has racked up seven different clubs as well as having two spells at both Northampton Town and Gillingham. He joined Wycombe in the summer on the back of scoring the winning goal in AFC Wimbledon’s play-off final win at Wembley. Standing at 5’11” and weighing in at 101kg, his main attributes are clearly his ability to hold up the ball as well as bullying defenders out of the way.

DEADLY STRIKER

15 Box Office: 01302 762576

Stewart is an imposing centre-back who is now in his second spell at the club following a brief spell with fellow League Two outfit Crewe Alexandra. The 23year-old is blessed with good pace and is regarded as one of the best defenders in the division as well as proving to be a handful in Rovers penalty area when attacking a set piece. He originally came through the Chairboys youth system before making his first-team debut in January 2012. 39 appearances followed which then saw Stewart courted by other clubs and led to a move to Crewe at the beginning of the 14/15 season. The move didn’t pan out well for both parties which meant a return to his home town club beckoned just six months later.

But that was not to be the end as, more than 11 years later, he came off the bench for the Chairboys to replace the injured Alex Lynch after just 15 minutes of a league game against Plymouth – and kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win!

Charlie WILLIAMS

LEGEND

Williams was probably better remembered for being a comedian rather than a footballer having reached the dazzling heights of the Royal Variety Show in 1973 and being awarded an MBE in the late nineties before his death in 2006. A former miner, Williams moved in to professional football in 1948 with Rovers and made 171 appearances as a centre half before finding fame alongside the likes of Mike Reid, Frank Carson and Bernard Manning in The Comedians.

Club News England head coach Mark Sampson reckons England Women can take a lot of belief from their hard-fought draw with France at the Keepmoat Stadium. The Lionesses battled to keep the visitors, the third best side in the world, at bay and gradually grew into the game themselves. England substitute Toni Duggan thought she had won the game for the hosts in added time, only for the referee to, incorrectly, adjudge the ball to have gone out of play before the Man City striker assumed control.

He said: “We wanted to win, but we are preparing for a tournament. We played that game as if it was a tournament match and I feel that if it had have gone to extra-time, like it would have done in a tournament, there would have been only one winner - England. “We’ll take some learnings from it and a lot of belief as well. That’s the first time we have limited France to so few chances, and by the end of the game been the better team. “The team are full of belief now. They genuinely believe they can win these games and the way they managed the opponent was exceptional.

“We’ve showed that we are really hard to score against but we need to score more goals against these sorts of teams. It’s absolutely coming.” Sampson praised England’s defensive solidity in restricting France to very few clear-cut chances, but admitted his charges might have done a bit better in possession. He added: “We grew into the game and we managed the spaces really well defensively, certainly in the first half. All their good play was in front of us. “To get through 90 minutes against a very good French side without your goalkeeper having to dive [to make a save] you know that’s a very, very good defensive performance. “But we need to improve with the ball. We had so many moments on the counter-attack where we picked the wrong pass and lacked a bit of composure. “But as the confidence grew that got better, we saw that with the chances we created.” The Lionesses will be among the top seeds for the finals draw, which takes place in Rotterdam on Tuesday 8 November.

23 Box Office: 01302 762576

But Sampson, who guided England to the Euro 2017 finals, believes his side are rapidly closing the gap on the world’s top teams.

“You can only test yourselves against the best. That’s how you find out how good you are. And I think we definitely raised the bar.

All fixtures Youth Alliance North-East unless stated

Rovers bowed out of the Youth Alliance Cup with a narrow defeat at Accrington. The game started at a fast pace with both sides struggling to gain any real control. Rovers took the lead just after the 10 minute mark with an excellent team goal, involving a number of one touch passes around the edge of the opposition penalty box resulting in a chance that Lewis Scattergood clinicallyfinished. The game continued at a frenetic pace with both sides struggling to keep hold of the ball for any sort of spell with chances very few and far between. A dubious penalty decision gave Accrington the opportunity to draw level, a chance they took despite the foul looking to be comfortably outside the penalty area. The shape of the game changed just before half time when poor defending resulted in a foul by Josh Barker prevented a clear goalscoring opportunity that gave the referee little choince but to send the Rovers captain off. Accrington took the lead following a very edgy start to the second half. Rovers worked hard to gain some good spells of control but despite a really committed effort from the 10 men they could not find a way through. Academy Manager Kieran Scarff said: “It was a very frustrating day. Neither side ever managed to really gain control. We made some poor decisions in possession and lacked the composure that the players are certainly capable of showing. On a positive note the character they showed with 10 men saw them going very close to getting something from the game. In fact for good periods of the second half we controlled the game with 10 men. Consistency and belief remain two key words being used by coaches.

Kieran SCARFF Within the Academy programme we are looking at structured ways in which we can target improving the personal skills and characteristics of our players. We are fortunate to have a very positive relationship with the British Army U23 team. As a result of this we have been able to, this week, take our Youth Team players down to Aldershot for two days as guests of the Army.

During the first day of our visit the boys were split into teams and were instructed to complete a series of command tasks. These tasks were designed to challenge their ability to problem solve under pressure, to communicate and to work as a team. The boys threw themselves into the challenges and it was great to see the positive outcomes throughout the day. We then met up with the Army U23 squad for an evening meal and took the opportunity to mix the boys in with people they had just met, giving them the opportunity to come out of their comfort zone and have conversations with people they had never met. The Army lads were great with the boys and it was a very positive end to the day.

The game gave our players a more physical challenge than perhaps they are used to but we were also up against players who had a very good footballing background, many still playing at very good levels of non-league. We ran out 3-1 winners after a very competitive game that we controlled for long spells. Throughout the two days the hospitality and support shown to us by Cpt Paul Dale his staff and his players was absolutely brilliant. It is a relationship that we very much value and look forward to building on it further. Utilising the expertise the Army can provide our players will certainly benefit through their development process. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank all of the Army personnel involved in making it a very positive and productive two days. Good luck to the gaffer, the staff and players this afternoon. Kieran

Aldershot is the home of sport for the British Army and the facilities we saw and enjoyed were first class.

On the second day we were able to make use of the excellent training facilities to have a light training session before getting ready to play the Army U23 side in the afternoon. The game was part of the Army side’s preparation for a special remembrance game against their German counterparts in November.

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 8 - By John Coyle

50 Box Office: 01302 762576

The third Saturday of November 1946 saw Rovers back in the North East as they travelled to Redheugh Park to take on Gateshead. Travelling was certainly an issue for one of the Rovers players as full-back Ernie Swallow stayed in Durham on the Friday evening, and then found his journey to Gateshead frustrated by a broken down bus. Fortunately his deputy, Harry Tomlinson, had travelled with the main party and stood in, this being Rovers’ first team change in seven games. The line-up was as follows: Archie Ferguson; Harry Tomlinson, Jim Wooldridge; Cecil Stirland, Sid Bycroft, Bob McFarlane; Jackie Kirkaldie, Jackie Thompson, Clarrie Jordan, Paul Todd, Ralph Maddison. Jordan gave Rovers a lead after only three minutes, capitalising on hesitancy

in the home defence to shoot home from an acute angle. Gateshead had plenty of the play thereafter, but with Bycroft in commanding form in defence they created very little in terms of chances. Just before the interval the home side suffered a blow when full-back Thompson was injured and with no substitutes he was reduced to being a limping passenger on the wing for the rest of the game. On the hour Todd doubled Rovers’ lead, striking home a free-kick from the edge of the area, but five minutes later an error by Wooldridge allowed centre-forward McCormack to reduce the deficit from close range. Rovers continued to be largely untroubled in defence and after 86 minutes Jordan sealed the points with his second goal of the game. On Monday November 18 1946 the draw was made for the First Round proper of the FA Cup. This event had none of the razzamatazz of today’s televised extravaganzas and was held in a quiet committee room at the FA’s headquarters in London. Rovers came out of the bag with a home draw against Accrington Stanley, a team they had already beaten 5-0 at Belle Vue in the League, and progress was confidently forecast.

It was League business that occupied Rovers the following Saturday when Hartlepools United travelled to Belle Vue. United had started the season well but were in a run of five successive defeats, hardly the time to be facing the free-scoring League leaders. Swallow returned to an otherwise unchanged XI, replacing Tomlinson.

The win maintained Rovers’ two-point lead at the top of Division Three North, although they were finding their pursuers difficult to shake off, Chester, in second place with 25 points from

the same number of games as Rovers (15) won again and Rotherham (23 from 14) earned a hard-fought draw at Carlisle. John Bedford, the sports writer in the Doncaster Gazette, forecast that 61 points would secure the title for Rovers and in the same article opined that Jordan would double his tally of 21 goals. History would show that if in the first case, he underestimated to a degree; in the second case he would prove to be uncannily accurate.

Box Office: 01302 762576

Despite a day of rain and strong winds, a crowd of 13,093 turned up and they were rewarded by five goals from Rovers, who recovered from an early shock when Sloan scored for the visitors. Todd got the Rovers’ first, and Jordan added two more before the interval. The Hartlepool defence, in common with many others, found Jordan’s movement and ability to forage in wide positions a constant problem, one reporter describing him as a “Will-o-the-Wisp.” In the second half Maddison scored a beauty, beating Heywood with a fierce cross-shot and then Thompson, who had a fine game, completed the 5-1 victory.

BELLES

Jess Sigsworth says the team will be playing for the Belles badge and the fans for the remaining two games this season.

“When it came to the final ball, just nothing went our way and unfortunately the game dwindled out and ended up staying 2-1.”

The Belles’ return to FA WSL 2 was confirmed last weekend following Notts County’s 2-1 victory at the Keepmoat Stadium.

It’s been a difficult year for the Belles and Sigsworth admitted the game against County summed up their tough return to top-flight football but remained optimistic about the future and life in WSL 2.

But with Arsenal and Reading still around the corner to complete Doncaster’s 2016 campaign, striker Sigsworth insists that pride and passion are still very much at stake.

52

'We're playing for pride' - SIGSWORTH

“We’ve got to play for the fans now and play for the badge. You’re representing Doncaster Belles so you’ve got to give it everything for the final two games of the season,” said the forward on 5live Sport Extra.

Box Office: 01302 762576

“Against County, I think we started really brightly and got a good goal to go ahead through Carla [Humpnhrey]. But when Notts County got their first, things didn’t start going our way. “Notts then became more positive and got on top so when their second one went in, I think panic set in and we were thinking ‘We’re behind, we’ve got to win’.

“That game epitomised how our season has gone. In a few games we’ve got that early goal but not been able to hold our lead and at this level, you’ve got to take every chance you can,” said Sigsworth who is recovering from a knee injury. “In FA WSL 1, teams punish you. With any chance they get, they score, and that’s what we’ve got to learn from. “We’ve got to go back into WSL 2 and hopefully get promoted again. This can be a massive learning curve for us and we can push on and do well.”

Rovers Family Doncaster Rovers Supporters Club A welcome to the Chairboys from Wycombe, we hope their supporters have had a good journey to the Keepmoat today and they enjoy the day with us but let’s continue our fantastic home form going. We have not played Wanderers for a few years, but have always been close games. They have former Rovers favourite Adebayo Akinfenwa, who, if he plays, ensures our defence will know they will have been in a game. I had the pleasure of meeting him at the EFL launch at Craven Cottage this summer - what a character!

and Rossington to all home league games, and some cup games. For coach bookings and more information call Len South on 01302 817347 or Paul Mayfield on 07961727769. Rovers till we die Paul Mayfield Viking Supporters Co-Operative Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. Recently the Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the Football League and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the Supporters Trust at that club. The EFL issued a new league rule informing clubs of the minimum requirement for meeting with supporters and the kind of topics that should be included. That new rule came into force for the 2016/17 season.

The Retford branch are holding a Christmas draw on December 12, at Harworth FC, all supporters welcome to attend, with tickets on sale outside the Belle Vue bar on match days and on away coaches, The Branch are pleased to announce they have purchased a Gazebo for the club to use outside the bar on match days, to keep the fans sheltered.

As you may be aware the club hold two ‘Meet The Owners’ events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have initiated a ‘Supporters Board’ which meets on a monthly basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. It is early days for this new Board, but so far the signs are very encouraging in that nothing has been held back and the trust between club and supporters is evident.

Why not visit the supporters club shop in the South Stand community changing room are, near the away end, or visit the supporters Club website on www.doncasterroverssupportersclub.com. We also run a home match coach from Retford, Harworth

As the meetings progress we hope to be able to announce the progress that has been made. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the new requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. IRWT
