C ONG RAT UL ATI ON S TO OU R GR A DUAT ES Welcome to the 22nd Annual Mineta Transportation Institute Board of Trustees Awards Banquet and Convocation. Tonight we honor candidates for the Master of Science in Transportation Management (MSTM), the Graduate Certificate in Transportation Management (CTM), the Graduate Certificate in Transportation Security Management (CTSM) and the Graduate Certificate in High Speed Rail Management (CHSRM). To earn this honor, each candidate has juggled career, family and personal life to complete the challenging 30-unit program. The ten MSTM courses have prepared each candidate for leadership and management in the ever changing and demanding arena in the transportation industry. As a co-sponsor of the program, Caltrans provides convenient sites throughout California for students to take evening classes by way of live videoconferencing. Thanks to the support of other agencies such as Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA), Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro). MTI has outstanding outreach to students in other geographic locations. This “distance learning” method supports student/instructor interaction and convenience, so working professionals in the industry can take advantage of this unique education program. In the past, transportation degrees had a technical focus. Few addressed the need for well-trained mobility managers – people skilled in directing transportation systems, planning and development. MTI’s is the first academic program to train this part of the workforce. With your generous contributions, MTI provides fellowships for these students and many of them are graduating tonight because of your financial assistance. MTI also thanks the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA), the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), San Jose State University, and the Lucas Graduate School of Business. Each of these has provided priceless support to MTI and its graduate program.
SCOTT ARBUCKLE The Master’s program at MTI provided me with an excellent opportunity to further my understanding of transportation. I learned a lot throughout my studies and I look forward to continually applying all that I have learned.
M A RT I N BA R NA The MSTM program is a great way to jumpstart or advance a career in any transportation-related field. MTI students gain practical industry knowledge on a wide range of transportation subjects from a faculty that includes some of the brightest and most accomplished transportation leaders in the country. My enrollment in the MTSM program was a major reason that I was able to secure my current position as a Transit Service Planner with the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA).
SETH CUTTER The Master’s program has given me an opportunity to better understand the transportation world and its different aspects of the industry as well as the hows and whys of transportation decision-making. The last two-and-a-half years have been truly invaluable to my career. I appreciate the faculty for their knowledge, fostering a fertile learning environment, the staff for always helping the students navigate the various deadlines and figurative potholes that we encountered, and the students for their interest, professionalism, team-focus, and insightful conversation. This has truly been a great experience.
CHRISTOPHER ESPIRITU The MSTM Program has been one of the most challenging programs that I have ever been a part of; it also has been the most fulfilling. I would like to thank all my wonderful instructors and classmates for helping me become a better transportation professional. This is dedicated to my family for all their amazing support, especially to my mother, who I miss everyday.
J A M E S FA L O M A R E I’m very happy that the Mineta Transportation Institute’s Masters Program exists. It’s unlikely that I would have returned to the classroom after a graduating from my undergrad program a number of years ago. The program’s curriculum and staff have certainly helped me become a stronger leader in the public transit industry and has been beneficial for my career since starting over two years ago.
STEVEN KING Not only has the MSTM program accelerated my career, it’s allowed me to find the love of my life. The memories of this journey are sure to last a lifetime.
PETER LE The MSTM program has helped me reach my professional goals. As Joel Osteen said, “Do all you can to make your dreams come true.”
GRANT SEMPLE The MTI program has provided me with a new perspective on the transportation industry. The instructors bring a wide and varied breadth of knowledge and experience to share with students. This has definitely been a challenging and rewarding experience!
SARAH SWENSSON KING My participation in the MTI program has helped me understand the complexities of leadership and the long-term challenges transportation leaders face. As a part of the future generation of our nation’s transportation industry, this graduate degree and program sharpened my skills in order to advance my career in transportation. I am committed to work harder and smarter to build a better future for my community. The MTI classes and my experiences are helping me attain my dream of reaching the top.
JONATHAN YEO MTI’s MSTM program helped me gain a larger perspective in transportation - I’ve learned there is so much more to the infrastructure that I help engineer and build than just numbers and calculations. It helped me understand why we do what we do in transportation.
Congratulations to the MSTM graduating class of 2013!
