The Unintentionally Idealism

The Vertical Street

Commercial & Residential Complex Design

Ideally, the word “idealism” should be qualified in theoretical study rather than the actual design practice because in the chaos of modern society, the “ideal” condition is just a collection of subjectively- chosen features, which means these ideal models could not be qualified as “accurate” or “objective” . As an architect, I admire urban context and environment characteristics in the design process. However, in the context of Chinese cities rapidly expanding, quantifying or describing urban environment seems to be almost impossible. In most projects, urban context is a series of pre-settings of functions and themes rather than the existing environment. In this case, the practice of pattern study and typology study could only be described as the construction of a theme park: we create everything we believe is required by civilians. However, if we accept the fact that the current urban context of China is the ideal model, advanced or even aggressive method practices could be made in this reality of unintentionally idealism. This is the premise of most of my studies. In this works collection, I described my exploration of successively studying different kinds of design methods and introducing them into my previous works. Based on the study of pattern, urban system and typology, I gradually introduced techniques from different areas, studying the possibility of describing certain context of city and society with those techniques. In the last project, I tried to practice my study on a certain social issue. Since my studies are not tested in the real urban condition by civilians, this theory of method study should also be qualified as “idealistic”. That’s the reason why I named my portfolio “Idealism” .

The Vertical Street

The road network in Lugang was formed by both commercial and natural parameters. It was built according to the terrain, which at the same time fitted the requirement of commercial logistics.

Public Spaces In the high-density context, public spaces were required only in specific conditions. Schools, community centers, markets and squares were evenly distributed in town, and crossroads were sometimes used as public spaces.

Street Houses Street house is the most efficient type of traditional dwellings. With a compact, sophisticated space organization and the distinctive ability of forming street environment, it is the best house unit for commercial use.

Well-Preserved Streets With the fading of economic environment, the old street houses were gradually replaced by modern dwellings. However, with government regulation, the basic pattern of streets and houses were preserved.

Basic Pattern: Street House

The original space organization of street house was based on the traditional Chinese residence pattern, a space system divided by the unit of “courtyard. In this case, a basic street house system of the most common 3-courtyard houses can be determined. In this system, all the necessary commercial and residential functions are included and well organized.

The Commercial Context

...

The site of the project is in the busiest district of Taichung. With the space organization and quality differ from the modern mall, the street house collection would and should contain unique merchant types, working as a personalized, distinctive supplement for the commercial district.

Volumn Evaluation By calculating the average direct normal irradiation of every volumn, an evaluation formula could be built to estimate the environment quality of the future project. Using the Galapagos program to calculate every possible combination of parameters, the best design could be selected.

The Vertical Street System: Boundaries The street house system is an independent system that contains only one street, therefore the relation between different “Streets is controlled by another system of environmental parameters. By controlling the formation of street house blocks with sunlight, the appropriate medium for street house system working in could be calculated. The Vertical Street

The facade area is divided into “private areas” and “advertise areas” based on its angle and distance to the most active area of the site, or the “Hot Spot”. Different areas were equipped with glass panel or responsive closed panel to control the space quality and advertising effect.

The Vertical Street

By simplifying street model with the standard street house block and the one-side street model, a replicable model with identical street environment could be made for further formation.

Vertical Street Formation When the street model is raised and twisted, blocks were packed at the center while the street becomes a continuous medium space between houses and environment.

Rapid Transit Elevators and stairs are placed in the public spaces between houses for vertical rapid transit. Covered by public space, the rapid transit system would not interrupt the experience of the street.

In-Between Transportation Bridge spaces connect every independent street system from different levels. With gardens, playground and other public spaces, these bridges also work as the indoor and outdoor venues.

The Vertical Street System: Street The main character of the street system is the possibility of meander. With only two directions to go and the choice for staying or changing to another street on each end, a successful street system would have little interference to our activities. To replicate such experience in a vertical system, the problem of path continuity should be solved first. Concept Illustration: The Idea of Vertical Street: A Continuous Street To The Top

The Outcome

The result is a vertical system with no interruption to people’s activities. It should create possiblities rather than limiting functions, and that would be the basis of spontaneous activities.

Replicate the Nature’s Order What’s fascinating about pattern and system is that with simple rules of space order, a system could output complicated results. That would also be the mechanism behind the formation of a community: a collective activity with independent pattern of each person. Therefore by studying and developing the pattern of a certain system, we could anticipate the outcome of our behavior. This Vertical Street project is a study of street patterns, but the outcome could also present a certain kind of collective consciousness, the wisdom of people adapting the environment.

By introducing stage design methods, students could be encouraged to perform by certain themes of space design. While keeping the main function of a recreation center, spaces were concentrated to create a grand outdoor activitiy area for spontaneous performances. The 24/7 outdoor stages could be the first place for students to show their creativity and energy.

Scenography Study

The campus design of Tianjin Polytechnic University is the perfect sample of modern campus design in China. With limits of both time and budgets, new campuses were designed with a economical rather than cultural design code, and students were considered as units wandering in the university rather than independent personalities. To enlighten such campus of repetation and heaviness, this recreation center should encourage and guide students to bring creativity and vitality to the campus by themselves.

Plan

Street Performances The stage of street performances is built with activities and few gadgets. By marking transparent boundaries with clothes, instruments, cases or even nothing, the activity of performing could create a space of its own.

Club Performances Club performances require a kind of stage with physical bounds but little activity limits. Performers and audiences are seperated, and people are spontaneously performing or guided by DJs.

The Big Band A standard big band stage contains all the elements of a stage for formal performances. With clear boundaries of stage, properties and auditorium, both performers’ and audiences’ activities are limited and clearly guided.

Stage Plays Stage plays require custom-made stage properties, set construction and scenic painting for different contents. Isolated from the audiences, stage plays construct their own spaces of story telling.

Theme Plays With a specific theme to illustrate, stage design of a theme play has no limits from regular stage structure. Making their own theaters or blending in the environment, these stage designs are one of their own.

Reherasal venue requires specific lighting design to ensure that performers would not be disturbed by external environment changing. Using clerestories with different angles to control diffused light, the changing of sunlight could be neutralized.

The basic functions of a recreation center are the indoor performance and its related functions like rehearsal and storage. By directly connects rehearsal venue to the music hall, this performance flow could keep the backstage activities running smoothly and independently.

C16

Next room seems bright and warm, so he walks straight into it. He takes his last look at the dark room. Those statues are still shining in the pale light.

Making the “Icon” Photos

In 2008, the Beijing Olympics triggered an architecture boom across the mainland. When we witness masterpieces growing around us, we were mesmerised by the striking modern design.

After the Olympics, we were forced to face the result of this dashing architecture experiment. Stadiums were abandoned because most of the olympic sports didn’t have a solid mass base in China, and since the reconstruction will be expensive enough for most of the investors, slogans and daring plans must be made to attract capitals. And that will be the start of another experiment.

The Physical Icons

Sharing Experience

We can not deny the attraction of an iconic design, but at the same time, do we really need another icon for Beijing beside the rich history of our capital city? In such a metropolis with millions of people living in, do we really need to fill every public space with stadiums and high-rises rather than parks and squares? Maybe this addiction to mass construction is the illness of ourselves.

Ornamental Landscape

(the visual effect)

Civilians’ Reaction Positive Negative

The Beijing Idealism project trys to offer a kind of placebo for such illness. By recovering the site of the abandoned Laoshan Moutain Bike Course to a city park and community center, the new building and landscape design would become the traisition between urban context and nature. On the other hand, to fit the requirement from the original project brief: replacing the bike course with an iconic Ice-Skating and Skiing Center, a virtual-reality project fitting the physical experience of the real project will be presented for the striking visual effect. This architecture “icon” will be spreaded like the Bird Nest and the CCTV Tower and has the similar advertising effect, but it will be cheaper, replaceable and most importantly, much more “unreal”.

Working as the start point of the famous floating bridge in Ganzhou, China, this community center connects people on both sides of the river while keeping itself almost invisible to the city context. By hanging the whole structure on the river levee, this project is my exploration of creating space for the over-developed urban context.

The Oasis:

A Sunlight Distribute System

May. 2014 Personal Work

International VELUX Award Project The project “The Oasis” is designed to distribute and convert solar energy received by the building. The extend roof would collect sunlight and create shadows underneath for public activities. Part of the light received would be converted to electricity, and with optical fibre, the rest could be transmitted to the underground plaza and rooms. By classifying and bending the fibre, the path of sunlight could be controlled to give the whole building brightness.

Yin Que Shan Street Mixed Use in Linyi, China is a commercial complex project I designed in Serie Architects Beijing. Located in Lanshan District, Linyi in Shandong province, this project is a part of the city reconstruction plan. With strict limits of capacity rate, I tried to create multi-level public space for both commercial activities and residents’ recreation. And by introducing traditional Chinese pattern into facade design, this project could bring modern facilities into the old town without breaking its urban context. (Renderings of the project are made by professional designers in Serie Architects Beijing)

Ancient Building Survey: Dule Temple In 2012, we conducted ancient building survey on Dule Temple, Ji Xian, China. In this survey, we used rulers, cameras and other traditional equipments rather than scanner and other modern surveying instruments. We made hundreds of sketches on site to record details of architecture structure and buddha statues. As the principal of surveying “Shan Men”, or the entrance temple, I made detailed records on the whole building in sketchs and numbers. The final drawings were also drawed by hands. My drawing of Shan Men’s south elevation is currently presented in the exhibition of Tianjin University’s ancient building survey history. (Left)
