DONALD HULL Undergraduate Architecture Portfolio

FINDING THE BALANCE I have spent much of my time as a student of architecture attempting to find a balance between the wildly conceptual and creative side of architecture and the actual pragmatism that allows a building to function properly. Each of my projects is intended as a highly specific, yet innately comprehensible, solution to a specific problem brought about by the building’s location, program, or intended user. Therefore, each project may be best understood by slowly peeling away the layers of logic that led to the building’s final form. Accordingly, unlike a traditional portfolio, my projects are presented in reverse chronology, stepping backwards through stages of development to ultimately reveal the basis of each design.

INSPIRATION ABOUNDS Although my passion for architecture, specifically large-scale public buildings such as stadiums and arenas, remains paramount, an interest in all design has pushed me to expand my boundaries. Architectural inspiration can come from anywhere. Boundless curiosity and a willingness to learn are key to the creation of architecture that is experiential and emotive, and resonates with users. Throughout my time at Iowa State I’ve experimented with still-life renderings, 3D digital prototyping and physical mockups, lasercut fabrication, 3D printing, stadium design, and achitectural visualization of existing buildings. In addition, I was able to spend a semester abroad in Rome, traveling throughout Europe and broadening my perspective on design.
