MAKING THE FINEST MEMORIES

Part of the responsibility of any parent is to fill your family’s childhood with as many positive memories of laughter, adventure and fun as possible. How much richer are our adult lives when we can recall entire summers and weekends ruining our clothes with grass and mud stains? And how much closer are families who enjoy these days in the sun and the evenings around a fire watching the stars? We asked the owners of Llanfair Hall Glamping.

enjoying a high number of couples and even individual holiday makers and excursions

MAKING MEMORIES Lucy and John Miller, the owners of Llanfair Hall Glamping in Llanfairpwllgwyngyll in Anglesey have become the local enablers of such golden memories. Typical of the best glamping sites, Llanfair Hall offers a luxurious standard of accommodation to work from. The five glamping pods, constructed in Kendal Cumbria, are made from the finest treated timber and are insulated with sheep’s wool. Additionally, each pod has its own shower wet room, sumptuous beds with 100% cotton bedlinen, sofa, electric heater and Freeview TV/DVD. Personal barbecue fire pits outside each pod provide the perfect opportunity to return to a simpler era where a firepit was used to prepare the evening meal and warmth was provided. While inside the communal field kitchens, a microwave, an electric stove cooker, fridge and kettle allow the chance for convenient meals to be prepared throughout the day. Crockery and cutlery are provided. As is a handy fire extinguisher if you’ve never handled a fire before.

seekers, Llanfair Hall is a great place for families.

pickasticks and normal sized badminton and table tennis are available on site. There are also spectacular bike trails available and a place to safely wash your bikes when not in use. And if someone has blown up the fire pit, there is an amazing outdoor pizza oven that Lucy and John will even supply the dough for. “We welcomed our first guests on the 27th February 2015, with a customer base of mainly young professionals with a dog,” Lucy reflects. “While we are still perfect for couples, we are gaining a reputation for hosting family groups. These groups can book out either the whole site or a part of it and their children can play safely but freely – an opportunity that is so rare these days.” THE CONCEPTION OF LLANFAIR HALL With Tripadvisor reviews beginning with the words “Outstanding” and “Perfect” and “Returned Yet Again” you could be forgiven for assuming that Llanfair Hall was a lifelong ambition for the couple. However, the reality is more a case of destiny calling as Lucy reveals both she and John did not have backgrounds in hospitality at all! “After a varied career in the army John was working in recruitment and I was working as 8

a Market Analyst for Dixons plc and Cape Industries,” she says, “After I had my children, I worked in enterprise education with young people and absolutely loved it. Also worked for one of the dragons from the Dragons’ Den – and absolutely did not love that.” She explains that it was during a particularly tough day that her friend Ruth suggested that she should set up a glamping site. To which Lucy responded, “What the hell is glamping?” Needless to say, the seed was sown. HOSPITALITY BUSINESS AFTER 50 “We were quite old to be starting a brand new career in our late 50s,” Lucy explains, “but it did make sense. We travel as much as we can and we believe we know what customers want and how they want to be treated.” The opportunity to move to Anglesey also was not to be missed. It was useful as John had to continue his job in Liverpool for the first three years, so it was important that they were somewhere that he could come home to every weekend. Also, Lucy adds, “I had visited the island every summer of my childhood and also brought my children here every summer. It is a place that holds most of my happiest memories.”

Combining this sensibility with their personal experiences of what they would appreciate and expect when choosing to stay somewhere the Millers have kept their standards very high. And it shows. “We personally welcome all guests on site and try to make sure we are available as much as possible to give hints and tips of exploring the beauty that is Anglesey.” Lucy adds, “We also have two secret weapons in our PR team – our two dogs, one of which has great reviews of her own!” Also, rather than supply the generic pile of tourist leaflets Lucy has taken the time to create a folder of things to do and see including places to eat and locations that are dog friendly. “I like having a personal approach to bonding and believe it has some bearing on why we have guests returning for the fifth and sixth time!” Lucy says. WORKLOADS Teamwork is about splitting the workload and working to your strengths. As such Lucy is responsible for the majority of the office work including admin, advertising, marketing and buying while John is responsible for the maintenance of everything. They both share the pleasures of customer service, the endless laundry and everything that urgently requires attention. Lucy does admit that while she plans to spend up to four hours a week on their social media, where they focus on Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest, it is the first thing to go when things get busy. This is not to say that the importance of digital growth isn’t a priority. Lucy explains that being aware of the impact of the digital world on her business, she built a brand new website when she discovered that their initial one was not phone/tablet friendly in the way information was displayed. And, despite winning the Best Camping, Caravan or Glamping Site in North Wales in November 2017, Lucy refuses to rest on her laurels and is always researching how to further promote and improve Llanfair Hall. This includes researching what competitors are doing online and what the other award-winning glamping sites are doing in their parts of the country to stand out.

Such improvements include little “added touches” that would interest new guests as well as reward returning ones. “In each pod we have a feedback form and we have a policy that if guests have suggested the same thing three times we take action,” Lucy says, “So, at the moment wood fired pizza ovens and random tables and chairs around the fields are taking precedence.” They have had several enquiries regarding hosting wedding receptions here. Another credit to the solemn beauty of the location and setting that a couple would want to share such an important day at Llanfair Hall with their dearest and closest. Lucy reveals that the first one is happening very soon, which is a very exciting time for everyone involved including Lucy and John. TRAVEL It may be slightly ironic that for a couple that have created a sterling business based upon the experiences of their many travels; that their success makes it difficult for them to travel. But far from impossible. “You do have to keep a finger on the pulse,” Lucy admits, “But we do try and travel each year in May and November. This year it is South America!” Excitedly she lists the locations she and John plan to visit, “Cusco, Macchu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Iguazu Falls amongst others. We did Madeira in May and last year – Mauritius and Italy. The year before we did a road trip to Yellowstone National Park, Denver and San Francisco as well as our European trip to Iceland.” Lovers of food and great sights, Lucy says that of all the places she’s visited she got the most inspiration from Greece. Particularly on the Peloponnese, a peninsular on Southern Greece where they currently own a small property. “There are a lot of places I want to visit on my list. Everywhere inspires and we are all so lucky to be caretakers of this wonderful planet.”

DON’T JUST GO ON ANY SAFARI. MAKE IT A GRAND ONE Writer: Donnie Rust

To experience southern Africa, is enough of a reason to go there. For no other region offers such a diversity of life in such a range of colours and sounds. Life could have begun here and simply boiled over into the rest of the world. With so much to discover, you shouldn’t risk leaving with average memories thanks to an average ‘budget-focused’ safari guide! As a top executive, there is something extraordinary about you. You want extraordinary and vivid experiences. You want bespoke, tailor made opportunities to see all of the best that a place has to offer. You want an adventure that would be worthy of a Hans Zimmer original composition. You will not settle for anything less. And nor should you. HAYWARD’S GRAND SAFARI Haywards Grand Safari was founded by Peter Hayward in 1991 and it is the only real choice in bespoke executive level safaris for big groups of over 40 people. It is reminiscent of the bygone days of explorers and great hunters who would embark upon African expeditions with an entourage of a hundred people. Bringing along everything from gun-bearers, hunters and guides to female companions, porters and cooks. Today, there can be up to 200 people on just one of Haywards safaris, enjoying the same spirit of adventure as those pioneers in the 1800s but with far higher standards of luxury. We spoke with Peter Hayward himself and discovered just what goes into the background of this vibrant, exciting business. A LINEAGE OF ADVENTURERS There is a scale to Peter Hayward’s story that could rival any tale in Africa. A full quarter of a century before the famous explorer David Livingstone ever set foot in Africa, Peter’s great, great grandfather James Hayward, a 24-yearold husband and father set sail on 7th January 1820 to Algoa Bay, South Africa, aboard The Weymouth. 11

Travelling with him was his wife Mary, their oneyear old child William and James’ two younger brothers William and George. This was hardedged pioneering at its best at a time when the Cape’s Eastern Colonies was a vast wilderness of buffalo herds, elephants and antelope, outlined with packs of wild dogs and the ever present simba, the lions. Safari camps were a way of life for the Haywards. And not much has changed. “We have a long family line of ‘outdoors men’ and pioneers within the African context,” Peter says, “Our ancestors were opening up regions, putting in towns and farming the rural areas. I am 7th generation in line already and count myself lucky to live in a country that is still dominated by wilderness.”

duction of these mega camps and began hosting corporates into these regions, “Then by the end of 1999 we launched our all new conceptional camp called Haywards Grand Safari Camp – a concept we have been continuously developing ever since.” This development, while organic, has been very directed. Peter explains that they were clear about wanting to specialize in the group arena from the outset, offering experiences for larger numbers. “But our presentation, attention to detail and the handling of the individual’s experience is our forte. We offer group safaris yet still provide a personal experience to each group member, this has earned us our five-star status.”

“In 1991, when we first started we ran smaller weekend fishing camps,” he recalls, “In ’92, we went into the “mega camp concept”, hosting film crews shooting in Namibia and Botswana.”

THE SAFARIS This is not the sort of safari where you would dos in a sleeping bag and spend the day bouncing about on the roof of a Jeep. This is an entirely different class of safari. The groups that Hayward’s Grand Safaris work with are of the size where the main problem faced is access into pristine wilderness areas. The lodges are too small to cater for groups this size, whereas Haywards allows big groups access to unique and remote wildlife areas by bringing their accommodation with them.

Between ’96 and ’99 they perfected their pro-

Speaking about the exclusivity of their brand,

Within this wilderness Peter’s company creates private events and safari functions for a selection of blue chip corporates, European royalty, Hollywood celebrities and even Miss World pageant finalists. This high-end class of executive has been the focus since 1992.

12

Peter explains, “For us ‘safari’ means taking highly privileged people into highly privileged areas. Our brand of safari is very different from the mill. It is a primary product providing rare and privileged safari events that supersedes the expectations of the clients in every way.” As the Safari sets off across the continent, each location has its own cache of secrets to be discovered. One of the tasks that Hayward’s Safari has to be able to manage is to orientate guests towards an appreciation of the area they are immersed in. Peter reveals that they bring in storytellers to do this, saying, “They are historians in their own right and cover a range of archeological, geological and zoological material in an entertaining and personable fashion.” An example would be i’Simangaliso, which is the biggest wetland park in Africa set within the Zulu culture, and covering various rhino breeding programmes in Africa. The storytellers use the campfire as their stage and weave their stories to the delight of the guests, answering questions as they go and involving everyone. It is the perfect fireside entertainment. “Great entertainment doesn’t need to be all glitz and glamour,” Peter says, “We do it on a scale that is grand and that is client specific. But “Grand” could mean privacy and the privilege of being the only people on 3000 hectares of remote, pristine wilderness surrounded by a group of lions, or a herd of elephant which walk through camp as they come to investigate the stories being told. This is the priceless value of what we offer.” RUNNING A “GRAND” SAFARI BUSINESS Up to 90 staff, dependent on each project as it comes along, and his own four children, work for Hayward Safaris at any given time. And to be a member of the crew, as Peter refers to it, everyone has to be at the top of their game.

“Anyone who can run a 22-hour shift qualifies.” He elaborates, “The reality is that our crew can handle the punch of long shifts and hard work and do it for extended periods of time. If an individual can deliver and they enjoy the sort of work, we don’t mind where the person originates from. You can’t force someone to have that mindset, but it is an essential mindset to have as we are in the event management industry.” STAYING AHEAD OF THE GAME Hayward’s award-winning approach is no secret and Peter knows that despite the seven-generation advantage he may have on some competitors that he has to keep his business ahead of the game. Part of this is keeping abreast of the developments in the industry and understanding how everyone will be affected by such things as reduced budgets, cost increases or client’s expectations. He explains, “I communicate all the time with people in our world. I like working with true professionals that are on top of their game, and for them to be there they need to know that game inside and out. It’s all part of the formula for success.” He goes on to explain that they are not in the ‘same old, same old’ business and have to constantly be innovating and improving. They have to, because each and every production for a client is unique from top to bottom. To create the best experience, they have to be able to interpret clearly what the client wants. “Every client is individual, and we have never had two jobs remotely similar over the past 20 years,” Peter says, “We don’t use templates, irrespective of what the event is be it a 21st or a 60th birthday party, a wedding or the launch of the Ferrari 458, Landrover or the BMW X5. Everything is original from start to finish.”

Extensive training is given, and through an organizing board, each staff member is expected to perform their specific function perfectly. Haywards have an inhouse safari academy for ongoing training and part of this is ongoing development of individual life skills. This is so that their crew members can also become more effective members of society, something that Peter is particularly proud of.

The company received two international world awards for their Isuzu launch and recently hosted the ruler of Emirates. It’s this diversity that Peter likes about it. These big, high-end, life-changing productions, working with royal family members, or setting up for Dire Straits or Creedence Clearwater Revival on stage, is the space where Peter is most at home.

And what sorts of qualities does the individual need to possess to be able to work on the Hayward’s Grand Safari? Peter’s first answer is simple:

Pertinently, he says, “We are not a ‘bed option’ for agents desperate to find enough capacity for their big group. We are in the business of creation.” 13

WINGTONS

AUTHENTICITY AND LUXURY GUARANTEED

If you’re not gaga for glamping yet, perhaps you just haven’t found the right site yet. Wingtons Glamping can certainly help with that and offers a unique experience that promises to be impossible to forget.

sence of glamping.

Soon to be celebrating two years of happy campers, Wingtons Glamping, set in the heart of the Tamar Valley, in Tasmania, has effortlessly risen through the ranks of coveted getaway locations, thanks to the truly unique and niche experience on offer.

“The sites come with your own private outdoor kitchen; a Weber Baby Q BBQ and teak dining suite will make cooking your fresh Tasmanian produce a treat. To make our sites even more convenient, we have created unique private bathrooms with flushing toilets, hot showers and of course, luxury eco-friendly bathroom products and plush Turkish bathrobes. We also have a projector that guests can borrow to watch movies inside their tent and kayaks.”

Guests can enjoy sumptuous bell tents, erected just a stone’s throw from a beautiful river, for that authentic ‘getting back to nature’ experience that so many city dwellers lust after. Just don’t go assuming that the tents are basic, as Graham Kington and Nathaniel Wicks, the owners, have been careful to avoid exactly this issue, “Each bell tent has been fitted out with European wood fires to keep you cosy and warm at night, queen size beds dressed with fine Egyptian linen, antique steamer trunks and Persian style carpets, to create an atmosphere that could only be described as absolutely luxurious. We also include some of life’s modern conveniences, such as an icebox to keep your wine cool, electric lighting, Bose Bluetooth speakers to help create the right mood and the ability to charge your mobile phone or laptop.” Let’s be honest and say that as much as the idea of shutting the real world out for a few nights appeals, it’s always a bind to say goodbye to technology, especially for those of us that have become used to checking our emails throughout the day. Knowing that you can keep your devices fully charged really does make for a more modern version of camping that doesn’t negate on convenience. Really, that’s the whole es 14

The wow-factor inclusions don’t end with charging facilities though,

This all brings to mind striking images of riverfront luxury, relaxation and warm hazy days spent with loved ones, just luxuriating in the organic splendor of the setting, but it must take a huge contingent of staff to maintain the standards at Wingtons, surely? And wouldn’t that make it feel less like a nature-filled break and more like a standard hotel, just with fewer walls? Well…not in this case. The site was already owned by Nathaniel’s family, but needed a lot of work to become a viable business location, not to mention an enjoyable home for the pair. Taking on a full cottage restoration as well as site prep was no small task, “There are just the two of us working in the business - we don’t have any additional employees. We had a plan to get the business up and running in a month, after moving to Tasmania, but in the end, it took us almost six months. We had a lot of work to do on the cottage on the property, including reroofing, plumbing and painting. We also milled timber from some felled trees to build a deck and planted over 140 trees, all

the end, it took us almost six months. We had a lot of work to do on the cottage on the property, including reroofing, plumbing and painting. We also milled timber from some felled trees to build a deck and planted over 140 trees, all before setting up the glamping area. We opened just in time for the wettest winter Tasmania has ever had, so it was a bit of a trial by fire, but completely worth it.” This is a great insight into what it takes to offer guests the perfect glamping retreat; hard work, constant vigilance and a heartfelt connection to not only the hospitality industry but also the natural world. It’s all about self-sacrifice, but it’s a price worth paying to be free of the trials and tribulations of regular employment. Having worked in teaching and recruitment, not to mention hospitality, prior to opening Wingtons, both Graham and Nathaniel find joy in the little free time they do get together, “We don’t get a lot of down time as we’re pretty busy! We shut down for a couple of months over winter and love to get away overseas. Last year we travelled to Taiwan and Japan and this year we’re going to Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar. Next year we’re planning a round the world trip in business class, which we’re really excited about!” Of course, family is also a key consideration as well, as Graham explained,“Nathaniel’s family live about an hour away and we see them regularly - one of Nat’s sisters, Talia, has her own business making terrariums and we have one in each of our tents. My family live in Melbourne and the UK, so we don’t see them as much but my mum, dad and sister are meeting up with us in Bali for the last week of our holiday.” Citing the busiest time of year as December through to the end of February, it’s advisable to book well in advance, if you want to take advantage of the incredible facilities on offer at Wingtons. During the rest of the year, weekends book up fast as well, so earlybooking, through the Wingtons website is highly recommended. Not ones to be out of the loop, Graham and Nathaniel have partnered with AirBnB, but this is a small part of the business, meaning that some good old fashioned direct contact is still the best course of action.

the moment, but it is growing. We know of the other glamping businesses and work together - we can only host a maximum of 6 people at a time so if there are larger groups, then we let them know about the other sites. We were called about a fortnight ago by someone looking to set up a glamping business on the east coast and we were more than happy to talk through some of the challenges we faced and offer some advice. We don’t see more glamping as competition and are happy to work with these businesses now and in the future. The more the merrier!” This isn’t to say that Graham and Nathaniel won’t continue to dream up new and exciting innovations in a bid to stay attractive to both new and returning guests though, “Future plans include wood-fired hot tubs, a whisky bar, expansion of the site at Clarence Point, working with selected vineyards to provide tastings onsite and even possible expansion outside of Tasmania. The most important thing to us is that our guests experience an authentic, luxurious glamping experience and to enjoy Tasmania at it’s finest. We want Wingtons to be remembered for creating something unique and restoring a family treasure. As well as keeping family traditions alive, like daily swimming in the Tamar River.” Wington’s glamping has everything for even the most discerning of guests, all wrapped up in family values and an intrinsic appreciation of what the setting has to offer. If that doesn’t speak of unforgettable romantic getaways, family retreats and sumptuous honeymoons with a difference, what does? “Yorkshire offers something that few places in Britain can,” she says, “We’re in very close proximity to an amazing coastline and heather moors, which run into forestry. You’ve got such a wealth of natural beauty in quite a small area.”

While Wingtons offers a commercially viable and exciting opportunity for travel aficionados with a penchant for the finer things in life, the glamping industry is still charmingly niche in Tasmania, with competitors being more friends than adversaries, “Glamping is a small part of tourism in Tasmania at 15

SILVERBACK OUTDOORS

SOD THE ‘SALES FLOOR’ I’M HITTING THAT HORIZON

What does it take to get a person to catch their dreams and change their world? To live life on their terms and to not let anyone else determine who or what they are supposed to want? Determination, support from loved ones and family and a firm belief in your own convictions. Also, a douchebag manager on a sales floor comes in handy as well. Brennan Helman the founder and front man of Silverback Outdoors, may very well one day look back with gratitude at his time spent working on a sales floor for an electronic payment system company. It was, after all, his experience there that inspired him to break out on his own, follow his dreams and live his life the way he wanted to. “It is important to take note of where you’ve been,” he says, “To make sure you never make the mistake of going there again.” A COMPARISON OF REALITIES TODAY’S REALITY. Brennan, who is 28, runs his business Silverback Outdoors with intelligence and direction. He knows what he wants to get out of the business and has surrounded himself with likeminded people who can help it grow. His business, specializing in producing bespoke jewelry and camping gear, sources products from manufacturers all around the world to ensure the best quality and diversity. “It’s important that customers get new takes on traditional products,” he says, “For example our solar panel USB charger is a product rarely found in UK stores, yet is immensely handy if you want to take a camera or phone on a multi-day hike. Things such as our jewelry are custom designed by us with the sole aim of connecting our products with the ideals or im 16

agery true outdoor enthusiasts relate to.” Since the business launched in early 2018 it has been a lot of hard work, a lot of negotiating, building relationships and planning ahead with a firm idea of where he wants to be and the sort of lifestyle he wants to have. A life where he is not relying on someone else to set the pace or direction. “A business is a vehicle,” he said to me over coffee while we were discussing his article, “It is how you reach your goals. But only if you’re driving.” His reality now is one that is bright and full of promise. Compared to a year ago. Where his reality was one of slaving away to make someone else rich. Like millions of people, last year saw Brennan working as an outbound sales agent for a company that had scored a lucky hit and become a “name”. One of hundreds of people sitting on the sales floor he was expected to work long hours cold calling potential clients from overused leads and to come in on weekends. “The earning potential compared to what we were expected to do didn’t add up,” he explains, “They stylized it as this party-driven sales floor reminiscent of a Boiler Room or Wolf of Wall Street film, which only works if the rewards are worth the effort. At any moment you could be hit by a nerf dart to the eye or a football could land on your desk, loud music would be blaring at all times and you were answering to people who did not know their jobs. And those that did were wasted there.” This is something that millions of people can unfortunately relate to. Looking back, Brennan admits that he doesn’t know why he put up with it

at all at the time. The breaking point came when his sales manager actively went out of his way to humiliate him in the office and then claimed that he wasn’t “getting into the spirit” of things. After that Brennan left and hasn’t even thought about them since. “I must thank that sales manager one of these days,” he says, “If not for him I may have become him.” MAKING YOUR OWN REALITY The day he left, Brennan recalls, he sat down and poured himself a glass of whiskey and decided that something had to change.

be found on social media and keeping up with technology. “We embrace and utilise all new technology and see it as an opportunity not a threat. Apart from our supply chain we are almost entirely a cloud-based business as that’s the way businesses are going and it also offers huge benefits.” He says. “Also, as much as this is a buzz word, agility is the key. Consumer tastes change fast and having a business model that can pivot and move easily is key. I always noted a strong lesson from the collapse of Blockbusters, if anything it really shows that modern businesses

“A part of me died that day… the part that was willing to ever work for someone else again,” he says, “I wrote down a list of everything I enjoyed in life and started connecting dots. All signs pointed to something outdoor related and the path was pretty straightforward from there.” After exploring the industry and what his options were, he taught himself how to build a website and how to do SEO, PPC, Social media marketing and graphic design. How to prototype a product design, e-commerce, how to import and export and subsequently how to manage a growing business. “It’s a lot of hard work,” he says, “More than you’d ever expect but life is only worth living if you’re in control.” With this in mind, two moments were the best for Brennan. His first sale and his 1000th. “It was one of those moments where you have to take a minute and appreciate what your reality has become.” He says, “I could hardly believe that I was able to live off of doing something I truly love doing. While I work 7 days a week without stopping, the business is now growing to a point where I can delegate more and build up the team.” Beautifully, another triumph came in the form of an email from someone in Virginia in America who reached out to tell Brennan that one of his products, a necklace, had inspired them to commit to hiking the Appalachian Trail. The person explained in the email that the image on the necklace got them thinking about what they wanted from life and they felt it motivated them to make the commitment. HIS TEAM. With his business growing at an unexpected speed, Brennan makes full use of all the technology at hand to achieve top level SEO, PPC and social media analytics. He credits a great deal of the success of his business to making use of the paid for advertising to 17

need to embrace and adapt to new tech and changes in the market before new companies pull the rug out from under them.” And his team. Taking leave from his past experience, Brennan sees value in building up his team mates, leading by example and making sure that they know what is expected of them. His approach is quite simply how he would like to be treated and to not allow his leadership of the company to form any distance from that. “Respect and communication go a long way,” he says, “People will not believe in you if you don’t respect and talk to them.” WHATS COMING FOR SILVERBACK OUTDOORS? Brennan explains that the marketing strategy of his business is about testing, revaluating and testing. There are so many resources available for getting in information on how well a business’ SEO is doing; how many people are seeing the product and buying and where are people buying from. And all of this makes a difference to how he is approaching the long-term growth of his business. “Right now, though, things are moving so fast that it is hard to see passed next month as things are changing every day. But, my vision is to have a firmly established brand with a strong customer affinity and solid team running the day to day of the business for me. And I want my business brand to inspire people to surprise themselves, that’s important to me.”

STYLISH STAYS “THE BOUTIQUE GEM IN YORKSHIRE”

Yorkshire has a hidden gem, where you get the benefit of the outdoors while not compromising on style or comfort. Stylish Stays Yorkshire, with their two self-catering cottages, provide a vision of what country life should be thanks to the unyielding and specific attention to detail of Lorna Harrison and her husband Chris. While the picture of tranquility and comfort, it is surprising how much work goes into keeping the cottages up to Lorna’s particular standards! THE COTTAGES In Scribbling Fold, Scarborough, the farm on which the dual cottages of Breaday Gill and Folly Gill are set are only a stone’s throw away from Whitby, where Phantom Thread, the latest and apparently last film with Oscar-winner Daniel Day Lewis, was filmed. Judging by the country setting that they find themselves in, this may seem like the only exciting thing to happen in a while but in fact, as Lorna points out, the route for the Tour de Yorkshire goes right past their front gate! Regarding the cottages; Breaday Gill is the two-bedroom and Folly Gill is the one-bedroom and over the last three years, since Lorna opened her hospitality business, they have not changed from how she originally envisioned them. “They are exactly how I wanted them to be,” she says, “It’s like anything; as long as we are hitting the right tones for our target market of guests, we’re not going to disrupt anything. Our guests love the working farm and that the business is family run. They also love that it is off the beaten track but still close enough to easily get to Whitby

and Scarborough.” She goes on to reveal that she takes the time to listen and read all of the comments and testimonials left by her guests as a matter of principle. Pointing out that when it does come time to change or revamp the cottages, it will be according to the opinions of her guests. DESIGN The cottages are a slick and stylish combination of rustic and modern. The polished concrete floors compliment the lush warmth of the furniture, which, according to Lorna, is a testament to her husband Chris’ fascination and talent for picking out furniture. “Chris is fanatical about his furniture and was very selective about the kind we had in the cottages; Mid century Danish, which is elegant but not highstreet, was the final choice.” She tells us. The cottages have won their fair share of awards and have been featured on restoration television show Building A Dream as an example of how to do it right. This is impressive for a couple with engineering and house-building experience, but even more so when you discover that neither Chris or Lorna have any such experience and had to teach themselves everything. “It was a learning curve. I had to learn interior design and get my head around how I wanted the cottages to look,” Lorna explains, “We were quite early with the grey tones, which are very popular now, but many things had to be organically developed, including the design itself. As an example; there is a structural T-bar that runs through the 19

cottage, basically a rusty pipe that ran along the ceiling. We polished it up, gave it a new life and it works well. That’s what I like. Leaving things that are already there can add to the story of the cottages, so old 18th century nails, pipes, bared brickwork and things like that? They’re in the beams, they’re historic. We leave them in and have everything else very slick.” Over and above this, all the cottages have WiFi, superb baths, reliably hot running water and all the modern amenities that a weary traveller may desire after spending the day taking in the Yorkshire countryside. THE LITTLE TOUCHES Bringing up two sons, working part-time with her husband and occasionally helping her father on the farm leaves little free time, but Lorna somehow still makes the effort to personally meet each and every guest. The demographic is quite wide, including young trendy couples, international guests, retirees and even sports people. “Repeat business is very important to us,” she says, “And building those kinds of relationships is what I love. Part of this is the little touches, such as seasonal chocolates or biscuits during Christmas periods, strawberries and cream during Wimbledon or knowing that a particular guest likes something from the village and getting it in for them.” “It’s how we want it to be,” she adds, “If we have

20

it the way we want it to be then that is the best thing for our guests.” There is a great deal of Lorna in the cottages. She reveals that seven years ago, she was left to make a decision about the farm after her brother left for Africa. She didn’t want it to be a straight-laced farm because it did not suit her and her personality. While she admits to being useful during lambing season, thanbks to her little hands, this wasn’t the sort of thing she wanted to be doing every day. THE WORK Lorna reveals that she does have what she labels as a “touch of OCD” and has directed it purposefully into making sure that the cottages achieve her standard of order and cleanliness. “I am methodical about how my guests perceive my cottages and I take this to the point where I’ve promised Chris that if I ever get less than 5 star I’ll close the business!” she laughs. “I clean them myself and go as far as using a UV zapper. The temperature in the cottages is kept at a mid-level humidity, to prevent bedbugs and I also do all the laundering of the bedclothes myself. The choice of polished concrete floors came about because of their anti-bacterial and anti-microbial benefits. My OCD gets me down on my hands and knees painting the corners of the rooms should there be a scuff mark of a scratch and checking that the faucets are gleaming, before a guest arrives.”

For Lorna, the cottages need to look and feel brand new. Previously, she has been an amateur jockey and worked with racehorses (she still owns some on the farm) and she was always an advocate for the horses arriving looking their absolute best. Standards are everything. To this end, she and Chris often spend nights in the cottages to make sure that everything is up to her particular set of standards, because her condition won’t allow anything less. “I had a guest once who forewarned me that she had massive OCD and after her stay she said to me personally that the cottage she stayed in ticked all of her boxes. As a fellow OCD sufferer, that was a tremendous accolade!”

AIRBNB The cottages are now on AirBnB, but it was a close call. After a minor bad experience when a guest who was supposed to be spending some nights with his girlfriend arrived with a troupe of university friends and started hauling in table tennis tables and barrels of beer, Lorna wanted to pull off the site, but Chris managed to talk her into staying and now they are Super Hosts on AirBnB.

They were also nominated in the top three for an Avivo Hidden Gems award and have received a Tripadvisor certificate of excellence YORKSHIRE There is a great deal to do in Yorkshire and it is a massive county that is very safe with little or no crime. “Sometimes we don’t even lock the doors,” she says, “Which may sound strange for people living in less rural surroundings. It may also sound terribly cliché, but people really do look out for each other here. It’s a very good community.” “Yorkshire offers something that few places

in Britain can,” she says, “We’re in very close proximity to an amazing coastline and heather moors, which run into forestry. You’ve got such a wealth of natural beauty in quite a small area.”

The Chilterns View I have found a high-end glamping site in the heart of the Chilterns overlooking England’s green and pleasant land!! But check your satnav before heading off to find The Chilterns View, as it is in the middle of nowhere. Well, to be more accurate, it is on 150 square acres of open land and rolling hills, which is in the middle of nowhere. Simply perfect really. It was a Thursday. I had driven across half of Britain, from Norwich, in the Citroen Aircross, which I had proffered from Citroen Dealers Duff Morgan of Norwich and I was making good time. The weather seemed to be holding off after the icy onslaught of the Beast from The East, which had pretty much brought most of England to a shuddering standstill. I was looking forward to a night spent chilling out and relaxing. The main issue was that my girlfriend was not present. I have the luxurious lifestyle of a travel blogger, while she is a mechanical engineer for one of the biggest energy companies in the world and she had a conference to go to. This was an issue only because The Chilterns View, if anything, is deeply, deeply romantic.

It is. When you think of glamping, you might think of belle tents with cushions on the floor and perhaps a chimney, but what you get here is a luxurious lodge with a full bed, a fire, one of the most intensely refreshing showers ever conceived by man and a veranda view opening up over fields as far as the eye can see. The land really does appear to be endless and Rachel kindly treated to me to a special 4x4 tour around the property. As it turns out, some of the land is farmed by her brother Ted. It wasn’t the time of year for anything to be growing, so much of it looked like endless fields of short green grass (which could have been wheat for all I know. I don’t write for an agricultural magazine do I?). THE LODGES There are a number of lodges on the property aimed at romantic couples. And this is by design. “You don’t want to come here by yourself,” Rachel said, as I arrived all on my tod, “It’s so romantic and peaceful and quiet. You also don’t want to stay for just one night because it really draws you in.”

LOCATION The Chilterns View is a couple of minutes outside of Ewelme, a village of old stone and brick buildings, cute shops and water canals that is only a short drive from Oxford and Wallingford. It offers the perfect sort of peaceful introduction to the real joy of the glamping triumph that is The Chilterns View. “I love this place,” Rachel Wallis, owner, host and visionary said when she was showing me to my lodge, “It’s so different to what people expect.” 22

So, I had to make the most of my one night alone. My lodge was Chaucer Lodge, the furthest along the trail and it had everything necessary to make it perfect for a couple. A king-sized bed with fresh linen, a kitchenette around the corner, a heated ensuite shower and a log burner, which was roaring by the time I arrived. Outside, the veranda opened up onto rolling hills that made me think of The Sound of Music and thanks to the berry hedges I had total seclusion from

enjoying the complete privacy that the lodges afford you as well and you would definitely be amazed by the number of red kites that fly around the land. In Norwich we get pigeons, but in The Chilterns View, you get red kites. The red kites were actually almost hunted to extinction but thanks to the foresight of conservationists, their population has exploded in the area and resulted in an odd lack of pigeons.

Outside, the veranda opened up onto rolling hills that made me think of The Sound of Music and thanks to the berry hedges I had total seclusion from everyone else. This was useful, when I dipped into the hot tub, which was, in keeping with the romantic motif, heart-shaped. All the lodges are specifically south facing, to get the most out of the sunshine and they all come with BBQs, fire burners and hot tubs. It is also a glamping site for adults only, no children and no pets. One of the lodges, the Safari Lodge, is something out of a Rudyard Kipling novel. Seriously, I fell in love with this the second I saw it. A khaki tent with an interior of hanging tent flaps, roped-up side yarns, a deep stand-alone Victorian tub and a huge bed. “This is my latest lodge,” Rachel explained, “I wanted to try something different and it’s been really popular. People love the idea of luxury and the wild coming together.”

Pheasants and partridges are bred on the land and Rachel is very proud of the animals that live here. So perhaps if you were so inclined, you and your partner could enjoy a bit of ornithology, but as my partner was busy schmoozing with the technical big bodies of a billion pound company, I decided to spend my evening doing what every South African naturally does whenever they get the chance; I made a fire, got some steaks, bought some beer and I cooked.

I had to agree and she had to drag me out. WHAT TO DO? Well, if you’re there with a loved one or your family, this is the perfect place to reconnect. The Wi-Fi is excellent, but you’d probably be too busy walking along the trails to get the stunning views, or visiting the historic sites in Elweme to take advantage of it. You’d more than likely spend a lot of time in the heart-shaped hot tubs,

It was a perfect night. All of the lodge water is collected in an underwater collection point and filtered through a bio filter of reeds and grasses on its way to a 2-meter deep pond, which has been turned into a wonderful bbq-ing spot. There is a log cabin/shack near it and a fire pit, surrounded by railway sleepers to provide a fantastic late night fire-lit evening. Incidentally, I would recommend going to the 23

butchers in Ewelme. I’ve never had such a thick and juicy sirloin steak at such a reasonable price. Oh, and The Shepherds Hut which is the local pub is a 5 minute drive or a 20 minute stroll from the lodges. It’s very busy with an attentive and hospitable landlord named Gary who ensures that the candles are lit and the fire is roaring for his guests. He also offers a fantastic range of gins and local beers. “Thursday night is steak night and they do a Sunday lunch too,” Rachel points out, “But you’ll need to book ahead to get a table.” UNIQUE SELLING POINTS Some of the other guests made their way down to the fire pit in the evening and I got chatting to Rachel about what her about the area and she indicated that amount of space available was part of this luxury glamping destination. “There is a lot of space that could be used,” she said, “But our guests value their privacy. My regular guests come here because they like the seclusion, not to mention the fact that you can stay here for days and not have to talk to anyone, if you don’t want to. Or you could go to The Cabin which can be hired for larger groups where you

24

can enjoy a beer and meet some people. You have the option. But what works here is that it’s a boutique holiday destination. It is something special.”

WIGWAM HOLIDAYS HAFREN LUXURY GLAMPING IN WALES

For that dreamy sense of escapism that you can achieve as you disappear into the Welsh countryside spend a night or two a genuine Wigwam® Cabin for a memorable glamping experience. After an evening spent relaxing and watching the stars from your porch or gazing into the firepit, treat yourself to an amazing shower or bath, and then climb into a bed with sheets so crisp and clean you feel like you’re sleeping in a cloud. Bliss. And, lying there, drifting off to sleep, you realise that all you can hear are the sounds of the countryside. No cars, no engines, no slamming doors or shouting pedestrians. Instead, you hear animals in the distance, the calm, soothing sounds of farm animals; sheep and cows. You can hear the insects outside, the birds and the curious night animals coming out to explore. You drift into the deepest sleep listening to the world just as nature intended: from the comfort of a top standard mattress and inside the cocoon of a wigwam cabin. Glamping, in my opinion, is the chance to have your cake and eat it. Combining all the benefits of the great outdoors with all the luxuries that you can expect to find at a hotel, glamping brings with it a sense of authenticity and getting back to nature. Whether it’s a lodge, a chalet, a cottage, a bell tent or a Wigwam Cabin, each site offers a new experience and a new opportunity to recharge those batteries. Great for people travelling alone and perfect for couples and families who find they can enjoy themselves better in the outdoors when they have a really comfortable bed to sleep in afterwards. WIGWAM HOLIDAYS HAFREN Nia Meddins and her husband Endaf are new to the glamping community. Their site opened in March 2018 in a bid to share the splendid rural

beauty, adventure and flavour that Hafren provides. Set in the heart of Cambrian Mountains in Mid Wales on a working farm in Staylittle, this is the ideal glamping destination for people wanting to break free. There is a heap of things to do from track mountain biking, sailing on Clywedog Lake, taking a walk across Glyndwr’s Way or sitting and enjoying the stunning landscape. As the Wigwam® Cabins are self-catering, it is comforting to know however that you are not too far away from civilization if you need to go in. Local towns of Newtown, Llanidloes and Machynlleth are only a drive around the corner. “We opened on the 1st March with six Wigwam Cabins” explains Nia. “It is going well and we are learning a great deal and learning it fast.” The six Wigwam Cabins are named after the local rivers, lakes and surrounding valleys: Clywedog, Glaslyn, Hyddgen, Glyndwr, Pumlumon and Sweet Lamb. Each cabin is fully equipped offering the best respite after a gruelling day of rest and recuperation while seeing nature and breathing in clean air. Each cabin includes ensuite facilities, a kitchenette, television, furniture, a double bed and wifi as standard. Additionally, two of the cabins have wood-fired hot tubs. To date, they’ve had 58 bookings with most of the stays lasting a couple of nights at least, “The first night is good,” Nia says, “But the second is even better because you get the benefit of a full day.” THE DREAM. “We are a working farm about 1,000ft above sea level,” she explains, “And my husband and I had been thinking about a diversification project for a number of years to create another income stream for the farm. We considered renewable energy and even poultry farming but opted for tourism due to the area we live in. There is a lot 25

of natural beauty to be found here and we wanted to share it.”

granted as a lot of people living in the cities just don’t get to see them.”

In November 2016, the pair of them attended a seminar with Wigwam Holidays and decided to go for it. Nia explains why she decided on the Wigwam Holidays Franchise: “I wanted a product that would blend in with the natural environment, something that we could use to offer some luxury high in the mountains. We had been looking at several different products and decided on Wigwam Holidays because we get some wonderful mountain weather including snow and a lot of wind up her. This is great for outdoor activities but the product needs to be very robust. Up here tent is another word for kite.”

Wigwam Holidays Hafren creates a wonderful first impression with the guests. Nia supplies leaflets about local places and makes a point of speaking with guests, offering advice on where to travel; yet many guests don’t leave the site as it is idyllic.

Nia also points out that Wigwam Holidays provides a product that she felt she could rely on as well as being a company that she felt she could trust. She and her husband put in for planning permission on January 2017 and received it at the end of April. Ground works didn’t begin until August 2017 which is when the Wigwam® Cabins arrived. This required landscaping and turfing through the autumn and winter was a challenge; however they were ready to open by the 1st March 2018. NEVER BET ON THE WEATHER. Nia put a great deal of thought and effort into creating the ideal glamping experience for her guests from selecting the best cabins from a highly respected supplier to choosing the locations for each one to give an all-important sense of privacy to couples and guests. But there was one thing she couldn’t predict. “The biggest hurdle has been the weather!” she explains, “During March we had three sets of very unusually heavy snowfall. It was up to the hedges and the road that leads to our site was totally cut off. We had to cancel several bookings in the first month which after over a year of planning and hard work was a bit of a blow.” Now, 58 bookings later, that cold start is just a memory. What followed the winter has been a record-breaking summer with many people keen to try out the new glamping site and share in the wealth of Wales’ natural heritage. THE BEAUTY OF SEEING THE STARS “When guests arrive to us they always comment about the open space, the quietness and how dark the skies get and how easy it is to see the stars.” Nia reveals, “We take these things for 26

“They really enjoy chilling out and just being in the outdoors and take all of the wildlife sightings and the openness,” she says, “We get a lot of keen mountain bikers as we have one of the National Trails passing the site and there are a number of routes in the Hafren Forest for them to enjoy.” GLAMPING There is an industry that has grown around glamping. As a traveller, tourist or holiday seeker, there are increasingly easier ways to find the most varied and exciting locations to stay. Phone apps and websites mean that there will always be an interest in visiting a new and exciting glamping site. The trick, Nia reveals, is to keep them coming back. “I keep my head in the game by daily updating myself with online articles and the developments of other glamping sites,” she explains, “I also pay careful attention to what the guests say. You don’t have to over complicate things, just keep things simple and impressive.” After all, guests are staying on a working farm and have the opportunity to see what goes into running a one of them. This is an insight into an entirely different world with an entirely different pace to which many of the guests are probably accustomed. “It is a great opportunity to experience what happens outside of a city and to really appreciate country life.” Nia concludes, “We are very privileged to be able to share it.”

GO ECO GLAMPING WHEN LIFE HANDS YOU LEMONS, START A GLAMPING SITE

Oakvale is a glamping success story. Terresa Banyard and her husband Chris, set up their glamping site after suspecting they were going to be made redundant. In a very Richard Bransonesque approach, together they threw about some ideas of what to do and when glamping kept popping up as an option they just went, “Why not?” It was a timely decision. Not only was it one that fit with the sort of lifestyle they aspired to, but the Welsh government were promoting tourism business opportunities. Hence why they chose Wales for their location. Realising that sustainability was the way forward they chose to create something that was completely offgrid but still offered the full facilities. Not a farm but a unique setting where nature was able to flourish, and guests could immerse themselves in it. Immersion; along with five-star facilities. “Camping out in the wild but with a private flushing toilet, a proper shower, private kitchen, hot tub and a four-poster bed!” Terresa explains, “Not everyone who loves the great outdoors wants to sleep on the floor after all!” THE PERFECT BUSINESS FOR THE PERFECT LIFESTYLE. Lifestyle was a big motivator for Terresa and Chris. Both of them love working outdoors even if it’s raining hard or freezing cold and neither of them would vol 28

untarily go back into an office. Glamping presented them with an amazing opportunity to have a working situation that encouraged them to get outside and bask in the elements. However, Terresa admits she did at the start misjudge just how much work it would take. “It was a lot harder and took a lot longer to get planning than we imagined,” she says, “We found our land in mid 2015 but didn’t secure all the planning we needed until late 2016. We had originally planned to set up a very generic, seasonal glamp site that catered for families with pets. However, our final planning consent prevented us from having large groups or dogs on site and insisted on a more sophisticated services set up than we’d planned.” Not to be so easily outdone, they decided to make the most of it and to offer something that would be open all year, exclusively for couples with the best facilities they could achieve in the middle of a meadow! This took more time to build and was a lot more expensive than they had budgeted for but they finally opened in April 2018. And then the moment of truth. “We had our first guests,” Terresa explains, “And then our first review- which was fabulous- and then after that bookings came a lot faster and we have exceeded our targets for the first 3 months!”

KNOW YOUR CLIENTELLE, KNOW YOUR PRODUCT Targeting professional millennials that appreciate nature and quality down time from their busy lives, Terresa has found that glamping success is about providing the right experience for your guests. “People stay at hotels when they’re doing other things. People come glamping for new experiences and to create good memories,” she explains, “We do everything we can to make sure that the experience starts from the moment they arrive.” She reveals that she or her husband will always make the effort to contact them before their stay for a little bit of reconnaissance. If it’s a special occasion or just a break from their normal routine it is useful, as hosts, to know ahead of time. “Either way, we’ll have the hot tub ready for their arrival and the fire lit in the yurt if it’s cold outside,” she says, “We also provide a welcome pack with a few locally sourced items and a greeting card welcoming them to Oakvale.”

Because Terresa or Chris were on hand they could show them how to do it properly and safely with no embarrassment. IT’S A TEAM EFFORT Oakvale is completely off-grid and solar powered meaning that daily chores are even more important to keep their business running smoothly. On paper the work load is split evenly. Although Terresa says her husband may not agree with this. “He will say he does more than me but then he doesn’t see emailing, tweeting or updating Facebook as work!” Terresa says, “He is responsible for site services, grounds and maintenance, pest control and waste disposal. As we are completely off-grid the site services are a major task, particularly monitoring and adjusting our power usage throughout the day to match the solar power available.

Terresa and Chris live on site, so they always meet the guests upon arrival and talk them through all the onsite facilities. They also find out about how much camping or glamping experience they have. Guests have been grateful for this, because there have been a couple who would have been too embarrassed to mention, that they didn’t know how to light a fire. 29

He also chops a lot of wood! I do most of the cleaning and all the laundry and ironing. I also manage the business, finances, purchasing and bookings. I maintain our website and the listings on the various booking platforms and also manage our social media accounts.”

“Before their stay at Oakvale, some had never lit a fire or eaten a hot marshmallow before. Many had never seen a bird of prey, never seen a frog up close or heard a giant dragonfly’s wings or walked through a meadow,” she says, “Two separate guests have now seen shooting stars for the first time and one had never seen the Milky Way before. “

OAKVALE

For Terresa, this is the cherry on the cake. To be part of the reason why guests finally have the experiences of the outdoors in a new and unique way. The making of those memories.

The gorgeous Yurt is provided by Mongolian Yurts Direct, a reliable supplier with reasonable pricing and the results are out of this world. The yurt, the locale and the ‘off-grid’ nature of the site is so far removed from anything else out there that it has to be seen to believed. Terresa is starting a blog about the site and her own experiences there as a way to connect with new and old guests. It’s definitely part of the attraction to be able to share in this insight. Giving the site a marvelous sense of realism and peace. “During our first autumn on the site I found myself sitting on the edge of the meadow when I realized that the crashing sound I could hear around me was the sound of leaves falling through an oak tree,” she says, “It struck me then that I had never “heard” autumn before! This is the sort of personal experience that I am planning to share on the blog.” And she has been inspired by her guests as well as they often share the various “firsts” they have experienced while being at Oakvale. Some are first time glamping, first time in a hot tub, first time in a four-poster bed, first time in Wales or first time away from the kids in over a decade.

30

“You shouldn’t work for a living you should work for a lifestyle,” Terresa says, “I spend several hours a week in front of my computer but I can open the door next to me and feed the wild birds from my hand. I get to share people’s wide-eyed wonder with a world we all take for granted. Somehow it doesn’t seem like work!”

“It’s all in the perfect service”. Bobbejaansberg Private Nature Reserve, Boekenhoutskloof, Gauteng, South Africa

UNITS. A few years ago, Dave and Alison were on holiday in Portugal. There they dreamt of a retreat from the pressures of urban living. Comfortable camping in the heart of rural Portugal, exclusively for grown-ups, a sideways move from the tourist traps and the bland blare of identical tour reps.

Surrounded by ancient olive trees and twisted oaks, Dolittle Holidays offer four luxurious bell tents, set among meadowlands and wildflowers a-flutter with butterflies. Inside there are comfortable double beds and all the convenience you’d expect from a hotel room – but under canvas!

They sold up in 2016 and moved. Now, having opened Dolittle Holidays in June 2017, they have already taken more bookings for their locations this season than all of last year. Open during the summer months of June to October, this really is the place to get away from it all.

FACILITIES. In the converted barn there are sinks and toilets, an outdoor kitchen to prepare your food and a dining area looking out on the surrounding land. Here you can enjoy a continental breakfast every morning or have a barbecue later in the day. Wi-fi is available in these shared spaces, if you ever feel the need to communicate with the outside world.

PRICE From €35 per tent, per night (minimum stay 2 nights). LOCATION Right in the middle of a forest, in the tiny village of Moita Negra, nestled in a lush, green, ICNF-protected natural space in the slowly-beating heart of the Ansião

INVITING CABINS IN THE TREES SURROUNDED BY REDWOODS NEAR BIG SUR, CALIFORNIA

UNITS There are two glamping cabins available at this luxury site: The Serenity cabin and the Morning Lite cabin. The Serenity cabin was given its name for the peace and quiet—and cool shade, great for summer—that the surrounding redwoods provide. Morning Lite is so named for its tree house-esque style with no redwood canopy above it, which will offer glampers an ample amount of the welcoming California morning sunlight every day. Both cabins can sleep up to four people, though there is an additional fee for more than two guests. They have a one-room, open floor plan concept and include a queen-sized bed, as well as a queensized sofa bed. The bathroom is located on the deck, featuring a luxurious clawfoot bathtub for taking long soaks while staring out into the redwood forest. Towels, linens, and bathrobes are included. A fully equipped kitchen and dining table allow guests to cook all their own meals as if they were at home. High-tech heaters that look like real wood-burning fireplaces keep these cabins nice and cosy. Wi-Fi can be requested for glampers who don’t want to feel disconnected during their stay. FACILITIES This property spans a full 19 acres, which gives glampers an expansive, secluded area to explore at their own pace. The cabins are surrounded by the Big Sur redwood forest, and there is a creek that runs through the property below the accommodations. The cabins are very secluded from each other and are at least 150 yards apart from each other. Many of our first-time inquiring guests ask about the privacy of our outdoor baths, and their use in inclement weather. These outdoor baths on the cabin decks are the most highly popular features of our rentals. 38

They are private, both from others inside the cabins being able to see other guests when they use the baths, and from guests in the second cabin. The only part of the baths that are covered from rain is the toilet, and for obvious reasons. Also, we live in a quite moderate climate, and even in the lowest temperatures we experience here, generally in the mid-40s, it can be quite invigorating to soak in the hot tub for long periods (both cabins have a separate hot water heater, so all the hot water one needs is available, as well as bubble bath for ultimate enjoyment). BEAUTIFUL OFF-THE-GRID YURT WITH HEATING MONTICELLO, SOUTHEAST UTAH

UNITS. This beautiful, off-the-grid yurt is located in Monticello in southeast Utah, has plenty of heating to keep glampers warm in winter, and can accommodate up to six guests. There is a queen-size bed, a large single-size couch, a full-size futon, and a single pull-out bed. The yurt is fully insulated from floor to ceiling, so a quick switch to the small propane heater or a couple logs in the wood burn stove, will take the nip off the coldest of days. A ceiling fan will also help circulate the warm air flow and keep your toes warm at night, and the three windows and liftable dome can help circulate cool air for the warmer months. The site lights up the night quickly with the almighty power of the sun. It’s equipped with a small solar system power for basic appliances, including lamps, so guests can snuggle up on the couch and read about the next day’s adventure. The kitchen area has a sink plumbed to the outside for washing dishes inside of the yurt—though there is no running water. There is also a double burner stove, as well as all necessary cookware and tableware. There is an enclosed pit toilet (blue outhouse) that is located 100 feet from the yurt, and there is also a green “shower house” that is 20 feet away. The shower house is fully insulated and tiled and has a place to wash and take a shower. For the showers, guests will need to heat water and use the shower bucket. Sheets, blankets, propane, and a 55-gallon drum of water is provided during spring, summer, and fall, and two five-gallon jugs of water are provided for guests to fill up in town during winter. Guests are asked to bring extra water if they think they’ll need more. In addition, guests can fill up with water in the town of Monticello at the Discover Centre, which is just 15 minutes from the yurt. Wood is also provided during the winter months, from November to February, but during spring through fall, guests will be responsible for bringing their own wood. Guests must

also chop their own kindling and bring newspaper for starting fires in the wood-burning stove. FACILITIES. The yurt can comfortably accommodate six people. This is a partial self-service accommodation, meaning that some work or extra preparation is required on the guests’ part, both pre- and post-trip. Inside the yurt, guests will find a wood-burning stove and a propane heater to keep warm. The yurt is only a short walk away from a country dirt road and sits at 7,500 feet, so during the winter, an all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicle is recommended to avoid getting stuck in the mud and/or snow. The host also recommends that guests have roadside assistance in case they get stuck and need to be towed. High clearance is not necessary, and the roads are ploughed after any snow in the winter. THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND Pet friendly PRICE. $58.85 WIFI Unknown LOCATION This cosy yurt provides the comforts of your home, but the owners have stripped away all the nonsense, all the distractions, and all the noise and stress. The yurt is located in wide open country near snowcapped mountains. The site is located 7 miles north of Monticello, Utah, and 40 miles south of Moab, Utah, off of Highway 191. The yurt will time warp guests back 50 years: chopping wood, heating up water, and breathing in the fresh high desert air of southeast Utah. MAGICAL AND SAFE. THIRTY FEET UP.

As a tailor-made supplier to the glamping industry Smallwood Treehouses don’t just design and build their namesake. After all, a treehouse is more than the sum of its parts, and owner Leigh Smallwood appears to have realised this. As a result, in creating lavish, luxurious, aesthetically sublime buildings what this company is doing is creating childhood memories for grownups. It is okay to be down-right jealous of company owner, Leigh Smallwood’s business. Through his joinery, building and construction business he turns people’s dreams into reality through bespoke designed projects covering a far wider scope than just treehouses. All of his projects are designed to fit the parameters of the client’s needs and wishes and undergo a thorough planning and brainstorming session that leaves no area unexplored. As it says on his website www.leighsmallwood. co.uk, “imagination is key”. Whether it is a kitchen, bathroom, landscaping project or a treehouse that his company is lending its expertise to, Leigh is insistent that the client be absolutely happy with it after they have completed the work and left. The benefits of repeat business aside, Leigh just doesn’t want anyone he’s work for to be left with something that they’re unsatisfied with. He wants something that the client will marvel at. TREEHOUSES HOLDING A CLIENT’S DREAMS. You can see from testimonials that this firm from Nottingham have received that clients really cannot recommend them highly enough. Including phrases like, “… we had the pleasure of employing Smallwood Bespoke project developments several times…” and “exemplary approach to project management, cost and craftmanship,” their reputation has turned them into a powerful word of mouth business with much work coming from recommendations and referrals.

Smallwood Treehouses are different from others in their business because of their appreciation of what can’t be seen. The appreciation for the “hidden” and “private” value of the projects being created. Other workmen see a project in terms of a list of materials needed, time taken, costs accrued and measurements. It is rare to find someone who first wants to understand what the picture is that the client has in their mind and really explore the idea fully. To do this there are several steps that are undertaken. EXPLORATION After an initial contact and discussion, Leigh’s very next step is a full exploration of the client’s idea. This is as much to paint the details for the client as it is for the builder. It is after all vital that both sides see the project as a complete whole before the first board is planed. The more precise the detail the better. This doesn’t mean that everything a client dreams about is possible within the realms of physics. But, it does give Leigh and his crew the opportunity to apply their experience and capabilities to the project and to get an understanding of requirements and the use of space. SITE VISIT A site visit follows. This is where Leigh and his crew start laying down the plans that they’ll need to construct the treehouse. Here they share ideas with the client, review other similar projects in their portfolio and explore the four fundamentals. Opportunities, constraints, costings and options. Sometimes a client may not realise the full scope of possibilities but with their expertise, experience and imagination they help them see what could be done.

73

DETAILS As the only habitable treehouse company in the UK, the treehouses produced by Smallwood Treehouses come in every shape and size from those for children, for hotels and even unique accommodations for the glamping industry. Leigh only works with the finest carpenters who share a fastidious attention to detail that matches his own. Treehouses are fun, that’s the attraction of them. There is an excitement that we feel that reminds us of when we were children and would climb a tree. Also, because no two trees are the same this guarantees that each and every design will be unique and magical. For the client, and in the glamping industry where many of his treehouses are now regularly inhabited, the guests, this magic is all that counts. It is down to Smallwood Treehouses to ensure that the most important things like safety, reliability and functionality are present while not hampering the guest’s ability to enjoy themselves. GLAMPING This sensibility to what the client wants and what the client needs to provide a safe accommodation for guests has made Smallwood Treehouses the firm that glamping site owners go-to when they want to be able to offer “something special”. Glamping relies on the combination of camping and glamour, and a luxurious treehouse is very glamorous. In fact, unique accommodations such as tree houses are in such demand nowadays that glamping sites can ask up to three times what they would ask for a lodge, tent or yurt. And it’s not just about being high up in the branches of a tree. It’s all of the sensual elements that are involved. Such as enjoying your morning coffee while sitting on a patio looking out from such a view. Sleeping in a luxurious bed while surrounded by the sound of tree limbs moving, the breeze blowing through the leaves. The smell of the wood. Many children, when sitting in their makeshift treehouses, imagine the freedoms of adulthood as being able to live in a treehouse because you’re grown up and allowed to. The allure of being able to achieve this childhood dream, even for a period, is something that cannot be denied. At some point when we were young, we all wanted to live in a tree. And there doesn’t even need to be an actual tree to build a treehouse either! Not in the traditional 74

Suppliers

sense. Not every site has tree growths substantial enough to hold up a house, but this is where design and style come into it. Several of Leigh’s projects involve creating “houses in trees.”

Using a variety of techniques, they can build very substantial buildings that interact with trees without necessarily relying on them as a foundation. This is useful when the project is a large one to make use of a growth of trees that are beautiful but not strong enough to be load bearing. Using pillars, stilts and clever architecture you can create houses that have space for hot tubs, several bedrooms, living areas and star gazing platforms all within the branches of tall trees without running the risk of damaging the trees themselves. TREEHOUSES AND EVERYTHING ELSE Their success with designing the coolest treehouses available in the UK, comes really from being able to apply the skills and experience that Leigh’s team has been able to garner over a long and successful career of bespoke projects in the home. This has resulted in many glamping site owners having Leigh Smallwood on their speed dial. When you know that someone can make the most complicated dream project seem straight forward, you know your kitchen, bathroom or landscaping venture will be in good hands. And with the glamping industry continuing to grow in leaps and bounds, it is important for newcomers to the industry to know who the best suppliers are to get these unique dreams off the ground and safely into the air. Or the branches.

HOW IMPORTANT IS THAT FLUSH AFTER ALL?

Comparing compost toilets to your traditional WC, there are definitely a number of advantages to having a toilet system that doesn’t require indoor plumbing and all the detail that comes with it. Especially if you’re in the glamping industry and you want to ride that comfortable line between luxury and original settings. There was a time when compost toilets were highly sought after by local authorities who used them for allotment sites and parks. These low maintenance loos provided reliable waste management without the hassle of maintaining indoor plumbing that is exposed to the outdoor elements.

the problem of plumbing installation and waste management that many glamping site owners are facing. One thing that glamping is all about is bringing luxury into the outdoors. Nothing is less luxurious than a toilet that stops working because the pipes have frozen, or there’s a leak or a blockage or something in the cistern has stopped working. And glamping site owners have started to realize this.

Andy Warren, Managing Director and co-founder of NatSol, a business that specializes in the manufacture and installation of compost toilets, recalls, “Since local authorities have had less money to spend on these public areas the demand for compost toilets for these sites has entered? a quiet period.” He founded the business in 2005 with colleague Nick Grant and explains that it is only quiet in comparison to how it was for the first five years when the allotment market counted for 85% of their work. There is still significant business coming from the allotment sector and also such areas as rural churches and remote trails. Which makes sense, local authorities may wish to save money but they still need to offer facilities in many remote, rural locations that do not have mains. Of course they’re going to choose the most efficient and reliable supplier with the most experience. ONE OF THE GLAMPING ESSENTIALS The glamping and camping industry is another area that has been growing significantly. NatSol are perfectly placed to offer a solution to

Architect desgned building for FA Church toilet. Includes garden store.

“Glamping is a growth industry for us,” Andy says, “Many glamping sites are purposefully remote and NatSol has offered an affordable alternative to installing mains. Our toilets don’t smell and are pleasant to use. Most are wheelchair accessible (actually they can all be set up as wheelchair accessible and most are, although 77

this may not be relevant on some remote sites) and they are cheaper to install and maintain on remote sites than conventional systems. No mains services are required and there is no freezing risk.”

sell a product to someone if we don’t believe it is right for them.”

HOW DOES IT WORK? There are many different kinds of composting toilets depending on where they are going to be. One that provides a safe haven for runners, walkers and hikers from hostile growths of stinging nettles in a field, will be very different to one found in a high class glamping accommodation. The mechanics behind them can be split into two categories: urine separating and non-urine separating. NatSol compost toilets fall into the former category. The urine goes to ground and the solids are then naturally composted without using heat energy from electric elements. According to Andy many “so-called” composting toilets are actually dehydrating or incinerating toilets which require heating or they need electrically driven fans and as much maintenance as a normal WC. “The big question is whether the composting takes place in the toilet or elsewhere,” Andy says, “This depends on the size of the toilet. For example, our small toilet the Compact, has waste removed for composting elsewhere whereas our Full Access toilet has two vaults below floor and solid wastes are composted on an annual cycle without removal.” This is all waterless and odourless, a very important factor for any glamp site owner. NatSol, ever developing their business, have another product, a non-composting, non-urine separating waterless toilet. The ZD, or Zero Discharge, was developed for Richmond Park in London and is coming into use for busy public sites. Along with the standard designs which NatSol have developed, they do sometimes offer bespoke systems. Manufacturing is mainly done by other companies to their designs while some components are assembled in their own workshop. “We market our products mostly through enquiries to our website,” Andy says, “Which is important because people still have a lot of questions regarding compost toilets and we have considerable expertise in advising enquirers as to which system would suit their needs. We won’t 78

COULD THEY TAKE OVER COMPLETELY? So, could compost toilets over-take the traditional WC? Andy thinks that they could eventually get an even firmer lead in remote sites such as outdoor locations and glamping sites. The advantages are simply too prominent to ignore. However, he doesn’t think they would for houses. “Houses produce other waste water which needs treating so it is much simpler to use WCs and treat all the waste in the same way,” he says, “But we are not aiming for the housing market. Right now, it’s about perception change. There are still negative perceptions amongst people who have not used a good compost toilet.” In that case, aside from the obvious scenarios that would be associated with any kind of toilet that isn’t working, how would someone know if they had used a good compost toilet? “It wouldn’t flush for one thing,” I think I would start with: “It won’t smell for one thing,” Andy points out, “It doesn’t flush and so it is silent in use and it won’t have a high cleaning requirement. There is a view down the loo, of course, but if the last user added ‘soak’ material – usually wood shavings – then it shouldn’t be unpleasant. . So, if you were on a good one, like any one of ours, you wouldn’t really notice much difference.”

Suppliers

Richmond Park ZD toilet block 2

They’re also very reliable. No mains services required, no vehicle access needed for maintenance of most of the products, and very low maintenance for the larger systems. The C (Compact) takes about 25 ‘number twos’ before it needs emptying to a composter. The FA (Full Access) can handle about 6 people using it full time all year as their only toilet. So, for many glamping sites that are only open for 6 months, that doubles to 12 people using it as their only toilet. CHANGING MINDS Business is good. Allotments are still keeping them very busy as are other non-profit making organizations. Growing groups as well as community orchards, churches, sports clubs, golf public bodies and charities such as the National Trust make repeat purchases. The Envoronment Agency has purchased NatSol products. Glamping and camping are growing markets. Whereglamping is concerned many site owners are just getting into it and simply do not know enough about the options available, so there is a need to educate them. A big part of this is how NatSol, as a company, approach customer relationships. The services that they offer are above and beyond what you would expect for a usual waste management company. “I think we give incredible support to our customers. I don’t think any customer who has ever

contacted us with a problem – even years after the guarantee has expired – could say that they hadn’t received high quality support to resolve an issue. Our reputation for after sales support is central to marketing our products.” Andy says proudly. And in the growing market they have to keep ahead of the competition. This requires them to keep a look out at what other people are doing and re-evaluate their product and services regularly. “We stay on top of how the product seems to other people. We have a policy of ongoing design improvements to our existing products and responding to a need for new products if we feel there might be a market for that.” IN CONCLUSION Reliable suppliers are always important in any industry. In NatSol’s industry, reliability is everything. This means for new customers and clients that satisfaction is guaranteed. And for guests and users their product will either be completely taken for granted or met with incredible relief. In the end, you probably won’t even miss the flush. This is all waterless and odourless, a very important factor for any glamp site owner. NatSol, ever developing their business, have another 79

Writer: Donnie Rust

Based near the coastline of Bude, between Devon and Cornwall, Aurora Moon is already set near some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. According to Laurie Reading, one of the owners of this glamping pod manufacturer the location features heavily in their business. The beauty, the ocean and the shared passion for surfing and the wonderful woodland areas have all collectively inspired the creation of Aurora Moon cabins. The whole team behind Aurora Moon have a great passion for travel and adventure. Laurie spends his time exploring the world’s surf spots and has a particular fondness for Bali, Mexico and Morocco. Pat’s heart lies in Africa, and he’s spent long periods of his life soaking up the culture there. Mex on the other hand spends as much time as he can in Portugal, sat under orange groves and working on his music. This has had a distinct effect upon the style and approach of their new business which they founded in 2017 after they had been collective researching the industry for years without realizing it. Laurie elaborates, “Our love for quirky and beautiful accommodation has often shaped our travel itineraries, and we’ve been lucky enough to stay in some incredible cabins and treehouses over the years.” One of the things that Laurie believes is missing from glamping is a lack of soul and originality. This is more down to the mass manufacturers of the tents, cabins and lodges who have to focus on what sells. However, what he, Pat and Mex wanted to design was something that broke the mold and wasn’t just functional but 82

truly beautiful. After extensive research, they can find nothing that compares to their cabins on the market, and with a combined woodworking and carpentry experience of over 60 years they have developed a product with intelligence and love, that reflects their knowledge and passion for this industry. “You might say we’ve all always had this idea,” Laurie continues, “So with our backgrounds of design, carpentry and cabinet making, it seemed a no brainer for us to create Aurora Moon together.” THE BUSINESS There are 3 people in Aurora Moon. Mex has been doing carpentry and cabinet making for over 50 years and is renowned within his area of expertise. He has a keen eye for design, and creatively thinking outside of the box, developing totally original and beautiful products.

Laurie’s background is in interior design and marketing. He headed the design department for a wedding décor company and has started both an award-winning clothing label and longboard business. He has always had a passion for design, and his work has been featured in numerous magazines and publications over the years. Pat is a carpenter and an ideas man. His eye for detail is second to none, and he has a wonderfully eclectic portfolio ranging from bar design to incorporating reclaimed metals into beautiful bespoke creations. “We’ve been blown away by the interest in Aurora Moon so far,” Laurie says, “We are in talks with a company in America, who would like a number of cabins for an eco-resort. We also have a number of bespoke projects for private clients and are receiving new inquiries on a daily basis.”

to also create the ideal environment for them. Currently they are looking for a suitably stunning woodland area that would not only offer a real-time experience of the value of the pods as a perfect retreat but also a truly magical escape. MAKING TIME As the three friends all have a thirst for adventure, they invest their time well in exploring new places. This being said, with the business still just starting out, for the foreseeable future they’re all committed with their heads down and focused in the workshop. As they all agree that their work is their passion it’s a happy place for them to be. Laurie even admits that after a hard day in the workshop he can mainly be found in the sea, “Or creating music. Or working on new design ideas for Aurora Moon.”

THE PODS. Laurie explains that their ‘Crest Cabin’ has an average 5 week build time, however due to the bespoke nature of their cabins they always quote a timescale based on the project. This approach is something that Laurie is keen to continue as they are all currently enjoying Aurora Moons organic growth, which allows them to further develop new ideas and concepts to fuel their already exciting pipeline of projects. GETTING THE WORD OUT Their marketing strategy includes a combination of editorials, social media and picking up the phone! Word of mouth has also proved to be a fantastic method of spreading the word about their products and brand. The aim is to not only build beautiful cabins, but 83

UK AGRICULTURAL FINANCE

THINKING ABOUT GLAMPIFYING YOUR LAND? SPEAK WITH THE EXPERTS

BUSINESS Summary. UK Agricultural Finance is a specialist business lender to the agricultural sector and offers traditional, responsible lending to farmers throughout England, Scotland and Wales. The company was formed to meet the demand from farmers for short and medium-term lending after the financial crisis of 2008. This is an area that requires specialist knowledge and a lender with the time to perform traditional face to face underwriting.
