Are we already heading towards 2020? How is it that 2019 has gone by so quickly? The passing of time is only sped up by the connectivity of our lives. We are quickly losing the ability to patiently wait for information and updates, to appreciate the slower passing of time. Today, things must happen now, immediately and without hesitation. When was the last time any one of us picked up an Encyclopaedia to find out information? Or paged through a dictionary for the correct spelling of a word? Instead, now we just ask our phones and are immediately gratified. What happened to the work that we used to have to do to find our answers? Nowadays, answers are cheap and immediate, and it only accelerates our passing through time because it means we only ever have to skim across the surface. But there are ways to slow things down. As eco-tourism in hospitality and safaris become major industries, they bring with it the importance of stopping and just enjoying “being” in the complete “now.” This isn’t in some whimsical sense, but just taking the time to stop, count your breaths and enjoy the fantastic position it is to be alive. Count your breaths, enjoy your surroundings. Remember that everything is temporary, and every experience is valuable.
Life is for the living.

EXCLUSIVE TENTS Keeping staff motivated
After a very eventful 2018, Paul Zway spoke exclusively with The Lost Executive to tell us what his plans are for 2019 and 2020 and the secret to keeping your staff motivated and excited for the future. Paul has a lot of history behind him. A genuine salt of the earth type who abhors bureaucracy, values his friends and family above all others and is the head of one of the premier and most respected safari tent manufacturers in the world. After a 4 week break during which the factory closed from the 14th of December to the 14th January, this year is going to be Exclusive Tents’. Their current docket of projects includes some really unique designs, for some impressive tents. Tent designs are often taken for granted, but Paul and his business have a reputation for taking on projects that have never been tried before. Even with the score of accumulative years’ worth of structural, architectural and engineering experience that has shaped the company’s leaders, some of the projects that they agree to take on
really push the boundaries of what is possible. “We tend to say yes,” Paul admits, “Even if we don’t know how to do it. It’s the sort of spirit that we install in our staff, that idea of stepping forward and saying yes and then finding out how to make it happen. How else do you learn and find out what you’re capable of?” Pushing the envelope to meet the client’s vision is a great way to stimulate the creative element of what Exclusive Tents does. As a business that thrives on creative input and a family environment this goes a long way to create excitement amongst the ranks. “We spent a great deal of time in 2018 consolidating business deals and designing projects,” Paul says, “And this year we get to implement them and see it come into reality. Especially the range of tents that we’re producing that have become known as the tall tents. These structures may become a focus for our marketing as they are something that has not been done before.” (details on previous article.)
HOW TO MAINTAIN EXCITEMENT
As part of the partnership two companies are effectively moving into one manufacturing hub, allowing the construction, design and manufacturing sides of the business to meet each other. The growth of the business also means new machines are coming in, such as the latest cutting and welding machines for the new factory. And, more people will need to be brought in to manage the workload during the first quarter of 2019, to cover cad work, design and sales.
Previous to founding Exclusive Tents, Paul spent the better part of two decades working as a game ranger in the Kruger National Park, specializing in anti-poaching. In this environment it is important to keep the morale of your team as high as possible and maintain excitement to keep team members motivated to achieve targets and goals. Paul’s approach to this did not change when he started his own business and it remains the same to this day. Relying on the power of open communication and an open-door policy, the dozens of staff are kept abreast of new developments. This enabled Paul to generate excitement when his company partnered with Johan Maree and his manufacturing expertise and his business.
“At the same time, we need to produce projects for our clients and cannot allow any down time in production,” Paul says, “So it’s all going on at once, which is nothing new for us. It’s always ‘all go’ here and everyone just works well together because everyone knows where they stand.” RECOGNIZING TALENT
“Employees at all levels like to know where their business is going,” Paul explains, “It doesn’t make sense to me to keep the people you rely on to do a job in the dark.”
Allowing staff the freedom to grow in their roles and demonstrate skill sets has proven to be a useful tool and Paul has watched his company grow and expand with this.
He adds, “I don’t want anyone to ever feel that we’re just sitting here on this side of the earth, disconnected from each other. It is important that everyone in the business has a sense of unity and a family ethos. Uniting two businesses was a chance to unite two families in a way.”
“People work best when they know what their target is and how their work contributes,” Paul says, “And feel that they will be appreciated for increasing their own value to the business.” He adds that his company isn’t top heavy, and this allows them to be nimble, “We don’t have a corporate air, I prefer a casual working
Along with the new partnership came several new opportunities. Johan and his son Louwrie joined the business last year and Johan’s sonin-law followed at this beginning of this year. Paul explains that woodworking has been in his family for many years and now all of the wooden construction that Exclusive Tents needs which includes flooring, decking and supports will be handled by Louwrie’s segment. “It is very good to have Johan and Louwrie involved with us,” Paul says, “They both bring in tremendous value and experience together and individually.”
7
where there are a bit more public entities there and that attracts a lot of tyre-kickers which is a great environment for testing new ideas.”
relationship, I don’t like that “business corporate feel” because I want to have fun with my work.”
BUSIER THAN EVER Paul has been travelling around the world discussing projects with clients, helping them dream big and put ideas onto paper for him. This year is going to be an even busier time as the excitement for the recent developments in Exclusive Tents has overflowed into the client pool.
“It’s not only about exhibiting,” he adds, “In everything we do there is the human element. As long as a company remembers that side of things everything else falls into place.”
“People are wanting bigger and better,” Paul says gleefully, “And meeting with them is essential. For this I’m also attending the Glamping Show in the UK and the two Glamping Summits in USA. Then there is the Tiny House Jamboree in Texas

JOLITA SAFARI The Great Tanzania Safari
Jolita Safaris offers tourists the opportunity to explore the real Tanzania. We spoke with founder Leonard George who explains that the main priority of their business has always been about involving clients in the experience that is Tanzania. And in doing so, delivering a safari worth more than what the client paid.
the tours is how they present themselves. This includes making the entire trip as convenient as possible. “Our drivers pick up our clients at the airport and deliver them to the hotel,” he says, “Then, when it is time for the safari they are collected and afterwards returned back.”
“Tanzania is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, brimming with things to see and do,” Leonard says, “Our passion is to share it with our clients in a real and transparent fashion.”
ACCOMMODATION Various kinds of accommodations are available depending on the safari package chosen, these can include everything from safari tents to lodges. The location and style of the accommodation forms a big part of the safari experience. Leonard explains this is why it needs to be discussed with clients ahead of time. “It is essential that a client knows where they will be laying their heads,” he says, “Safaris are exhilarating and exhausting and everyone wants to know where they will be sleeping after. Some clients love camping and others prefer the home comfort of a deep mattress and a hot shower, it is all down to their individual tastes and needs.”
PRIORITIES Leonard has been in the industry for long enough to know that the smallest details make the greatest impact in a safari. As such, client safety is paramount, and the flawless operations of
9
THE SAFARIS Tanzania has many tour options for a guest to choose from and Leonard prides his business’s approach to customizing the trips of their clients to generate the perfect wildlife experience. “All tours are customized to our client’s wishes,” he explains, “Our country offers so much in terms of culture, scenery, wildlife, vegetation, aquatic life, beaches, islands and more that if you don’t shape it around a client’s wishes you could end up missing that perfect trip.” Individuality is important with safaris says Leonard. It isn’t enough to just offer a template, package trip and hope for the best, you have to fashion them around what the client is looking to experience. For some it’s seeing the vast plains of the Serengeti, wanting to smell the dust on the wind and see the wildlife of Africa, for others it’s seeing the majestic blue waters in Zanzibar and swimming in the Indian Ocean.
THE SERENGETI Joined with the Maasai Mara in Kenya this is the only conservation area in Africa where you can see the Great annual Migration. Here, clients are usually overwhelmed by the never ending ocean of grass; Leonard explains that trees in this region mostly grow around the huge granite formations called kopjes. These kopjes are home to the athletic yet lazy rock hyraxes as well as reptiles like the colourful agama lizards and snakes. These rocks are also the perfect resting place for lions, leopards and cheetahs although they never lie together.
“Each member of our team is a specialist in his or her field,” he says, “Together, we make sure that clients get the most out of the journey, we will try our very best to give you an unforgettable experience from the moment you arrive up to the end of your safari.” Some examples of the destinations of their safaris include the likes of Serengeti National Park which is located in the north of the country. Another example is Zanzibar Archipelago.
“All of the kopjes are named,” he reveals, “The most commonly-known ones are Simba, Gol, Research and Moru kopjes.” Leonard goes on to explain that the Serengeti isn’t all like this. For example, the Seronera Valley is the heart of the park and the vegetation there changes do acacia dotted plains, where lions and leopards are often spotted. The banks of the Seronera River are lined with lush palm trees, sausage trees and towering yellow fever acacias. The area around the river is abuzz with different bird species and large flocks of black headed herons, marabou storks and various birds of prey. The Retima Hippo Pool can also be found here, lying about in the mud.
10
MORE VARIETY
“Whether you are an adventurer, thrill seeker or simply keen on relaxation, Zanzibar has it all,” Leonard tells us, “Jozani forest is great for exploring. You may also enjoy day trips to surrounding sandbanks and islands, cultural tours, spice tours, whale and dolphin watching and as many water based activities as you can think of.”
Further towards the Western Corridor, the vegetation changes again and the area predominantly consists of swampy, wooded savannah land, famous for the black cotton soil which is impassable in the rainy season. Feeding into it, the Grumeti River is famous for its huge crocodiles who enjoy basking in the sun and the rare patas monkeys.
He goes on to explain that Stone town, the heart of the island, was an important slave port during the infamous slave trade. A number of influences have merged together over the centuries to create a kaleidoscopic culture which you are sure to encounter on the island. To this day Arabic, Indian, German and British influences can be seen all around the island, specifically in Stone town. Small narrow streets, Swahili architecture and Arabic style buildings characterize this small island. Zanzibar is rich in historical significance and diversity.
“The Serengeti is home to one of nature’s greatest and largest animal migrations. More than 1.5 million white bearded wildebeest and 250,000 zebras take part in the 1000 km journey in search of greener pastures,” Leonard describes, “During their trek towards the rich grazing grounds they must overcome the most dangerous obstacle on the journey, the Mara River, famous for its huge prehistoric reptiles, the crocodiles.” Apart from the annual migration the Serengeti is also home to the “big five” which consists of the lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard and it is claimed that the Serengeti has the highest population of lions anywhere in Africa. Leopards are frequently spotted relaxing while large herds of elephants and buffaloes graze on the savannah.
GETTING THERE There are flights directly into Zanzibar, however, if you are feeling adventurous you may take a ferry from Dar es Salaam. As the weather is always favourable due to Zanzibar’s proximity to the equator, Zanzibar is an all-year destination, but visitors are advised to bring clothes for hot weather as well as long trousers and long sleeved shirts for the evenings as it may get slightly chilly. Due to the large majority of Muslims and the Swahili culture in Zanzibar all visitors are requested to dress decently out of respect for the local people.
ZANZIBAR Zanzibar holds an almost legendary status among travellers as an exotic island paradise blessed with palm-fringed shores, timeless fishing villages and lush spice plantations. Although a mere stone’s throw from the mainland, Zanzibar has an identity all of its own, shaped by a turbulent history which abounds with a colourful cast of characters, from slave traders and sultans to pirates and princesses. Located in the Indian Ocean just 25-50kms from Tanzania mainland, the beaches on the island are said to be the best in Africa, it is indeed the ultimate Indian Ocean experience.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND Travellers need to be aware of what medications and inoculations are required before travelling and if possible, consult their GP for all the necessary shots. “Preparation is so important to be able to properly enjoy your safari,” Leonard reminds us, “If in doubt though, feel free to discuss with us before you arrive.” PRICE: Prices and Recommended tours on website WEBSITE: http://www.jolitasafari.com EMAIL: info@jolitasafari.com TELEPHONE: +255 787 904233

REVIEW
NAMASTE SAFARIS
is gifted with an eagle eye. A combination that is a guarantee for success during game drives.
With a shared love of Africa and a passion for the wildlife found there, Namaste Safaris was created at the beginning of 2018. Founded by Dutch wildlife photographer and journalist Ingrid Kupers and safari guide Witress Nassary, it is a business based on building relationships and finding uncommon beauty.
INSPIRATION The business partners met during a visit Ingrid made to Tanzania. Although she had been on safaris in many places in the world and with many different guides, Witress stood out with his professionalism, knowledge and his ability to engage with clients. Afterwards, they kept in contact and soon began speaking about combining their strength and forming a safari business.
THE FOUNDERS Ingrid has spent years travelling the world, often with the goal of observing wildlife in many exotic and beautiful destinations. However, it was after her first trip to Masai Mara in Kenya that she became infected with a passionate love for African wildlife. The combination of the sometimes cruel reality of nature, the remoteness and the adrenaline of a wildlife adventure was something she became addicted to. And it was an addiction she felt was best shared.
“Sharing our passion, making people aware of the importance of preserving nature and giving them an experience that will stay with them for a lifetime is what drives us”, Ingrid says.
WHAT CLIENTS CAN EXPECT Ingrid explains that they go the extra mile for their guests. Literally. Where other safari companies have a restriction on the daily mileage, Namaste Safaris goes where they need to go in order to meet the expectations of their guests.
Witress is a licensed guide with a degree in Tourism and a master’s degree in Natural resource Assessment and Management. Born and raised in the Kilimanjaro area, under the ‘Roof of Africa’, he possesses an enormous biological knowledge and

accommodation is whether a guest wants to experience the bush with all its sounds, smells and adventures day and night, or not. This can be the difference of sleeping in a tented camp or a lodge room. The important thing is that Namaste Safaris does not see its guests as numbers. Every individual is important for the crew and the goal is to give everybody the guidance they need, according to their experience in travelling. Guests who are going on safari for the first time are guided in their preparations in detail. Witress explains that nature is not a zoo, animals move around, so it’s not a guarantee the specific wildlife guests would like to see is in a certain radius around the accommodation. “But we go as far as we need to go to track them down!”
“We don’t want people to miss out on something spectacular,” Ingrid says, “So we are flexible in the daily plans, adjusting to what nature offers on that particular day. That way we can increase the chances of getting the sightings our guests came to Africa for.”
SAFARIS So far, Namaste Safaris has worked mainly with European travellers and guests from the USA. For the regular safaris they offer tailor made, private trips, preferring to offer something unique for the guests. The safaris generally last 15 days and overnight accommodation is arranged for the clients, depending on what suits them best. The most important question regarding
2019/2020 Ingrid reveals that currently they are composing a Yoga & Safari trip to encourage guests to take the time to enjoy nature. To add to this intense feeling of connection with nature and disconnection from daily stressful life, the combination of yoga and safari is perfect.
14
“The yoga classes we will be offering during the Yoga & Safari trips are suitable for everybody,” she says, “Our philosophy is to give you an experience that will empower and stay with you forever.” The personal approach is the way Ingrid and Witress can make the guests feel their passion and get them ‘infected with the wildlife virus’. INDO DIVERS LEMBONGAN +255 0787699477
Dive into the other world Dipping beneath those endless blue waters of Nusa Lembongan and descending into the alien, turquoise world is a one of a kind experience. And, like all experiences that produce great and long lasting happy memories we all need someone to make sure that everything goes smoothly. Afterall, you are only there for a limited amount of time and it is a big sea.
underwater realm and the magnificent beauty that exists there.” He explains that to him and his instructors, dives are very much like safaris. In the same way that the success of a land locked safari relies on the skills and experience of professional guides to find the wildlife, diving guides must do the same. And, the underwater world is a landscape that is completely diverse and offers a variety of animals that don’t care for diving schedules or how many groups of people have come to visit them!
Indo Divers Lembongan, owned by local diver and businessman Wayan, are one of the best local diving centres on the island with an experienced team comprised of local divemasters and instructors. Providing instruction, guidance and an experienced know-how regarding where to find fishes like Mola Mola and the Manta Corals reef around the islands of Nusa Lembongan, Ceningan and Nusa Penida.
“Fortunately, all of our instructors dive for their own enjoyment as well and have a real passion for this,” Wayan says, “That’s why we’re some of the best at reading the signs, knowing the patterns and finding the beautiful creatures that people want to see.”
“We are a local and family owned diving centre with a great deal of passion and experience,” Wayan says, “Our business was an obvious set up as we wanted to share the incredible diving opportunities here with visitors to the island.”
This includes seeking out manta rays and big barracudas at Ceningan Wall, mola mola, moonfish and sunfish at Crystal Bay and visiting Toyapekeh to see the best coral reefs. Then for the really big animals, there’s SD Point to see whale sharks! Mangrove Point to see the dolphins and Buddha Channels to see the underwater Buddha Statue.
A large part of the diving is enjoying the comradery and friendly atmosphere that surrounds Wayan’s dive school. With their diving instructors coming from all over the world and speaking French, German, Spanish, English, Hungarian and Dutch international travellers and adventure seekers soon feel right at home and very welcomed.
“We also provide snorkelling trips at three different spots,” he says, “And all the activities include pick up and drop off at the hotel, lunch, drinking water and equipment. Also, our divers speak very good English and believe in courteous hospitality.”
“We are happy to show those hidden parts of our reefs,” Wayan assures, “While our instructors teach and prepare our clients to become amazing divers!”
LOCATION
“Bali is known to be one of the most popular and beautiful islands in the world,” Wayan says, “It is a wonderful island perfect for fans of diving and snorkelling.”
THE OTHERWORLDLY BEAUTY Wayan says, “Our instructors are fully licensed to work with all levels and every dive is rewarding. It is a thrilling and humbling opportunity to see this

restaurants to enjoy the offered by this part of the island which is a perfect location for sunsets!”
Many visitors come to discover the unique Balinese culture with its stunning temples, impressive green rice terraces, friendly people and of course its pristine underwater world. The healthy reefs are overflowing with multicolour reef fishes, and the tropical water is crystal clear.
GETTING AROUND THE ISLANDS Nusa Lembongan has the vast majority of the tourist infrastructure within the sub-regency and is a popular side destination for visitors to mainland Bali and Lombok. It is approximately 8 square kilometres in area with a permanent population estimated at 5,000.
Nusa Lembongan is one of those islands, and it’s one that cannot be overlooked. It offers, with Ceningan and Penida, plenty of different activities and breath-taking landscapes. Available activities include cliff jumping, snorkelling, cruising in the mangroves, surfing, relaxing around a pool watching the sunset, enjoying the savoury local food, and of course diving.
Only twelve kilometres of the Badung Strait separates Nusa Lembongan from Bali Island. The island is a beach lover’s paradise, surrounded by coral reefs with white sand stretches and low limestone cliffs. A shallow estuarine channel separates Nusa Lembongan from Nusa Ceningan.
“Nusa Lembongan is southeast of Bali and is part of the three islands that make up the Nusa Penida district and it is the most popular of the three,” Wayan explains.
This estuary is difficult to cross even during low tide so there is a suspension bridge linking the two islands which takes foot and motorbike traffic only. This has a significant effect on the kind of eb and flow of traffic between the islands and keeps things nice and peaceful, especially when combined with there being only three villages there.
Lembongan Island gathers most of the activities, markets and local life. It offers a wide variety of facilities and places to stay including luxurious hotels and boutique stays. The season lasts until September, so booking ahead is important if you’re planning to visit at that time. “We are located on Lembongan, at Mushroom Bay which is the most relaxed part of the island and is away from the busy harbour and Jungut Batu,” Wayan says, “ Here you will find plenty of small warungs to try some local food, but also very nice
THE DIVES With the dive costs at roughly $70 USD and $120USD for two. The day starts by meeting up at around 8am at their shop. Here, the friendly team

will go through a meet and greet and make sure that everyone is ready and properly prepped for the dives ahead. “As mentioned, we also provide complimentary pick up services,” Wayan says, “So no reason to miss out. Just don’t be up late.” By 8:30 all divers are on the boat and the equipment is ready. The staff handle all the leg work of carrying equipment so that participants can relax and enjoy the incredible scenery of the mangroves and Mount Agung as they travel to their dive spot.
Also, keeping hydrated is essential and it is imperative that instructors be told of any medical conditions that may be important to know. Keeping things running smoothly is all about being prepared after all.
“We typically make two dives and spend the surface interval on the boat,” Wayan says, “There are no hidden costs and we make sure that divers are looked after with a lunch pack and water for hydration.”
“This is an opportunity to experience a world most people only see on television or on their phones,” Wayan says, “You are explorers in an alien world, make sure you enjoy it as much as you can.”
Afternoon dives start at 12.30 pm and last until 4pm.
PRICE: $70USD per person/dive. WEBSITE: www.facebook.com/ indoscubalembongan
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND Diving is a pleasurable and rewarding pass time, but it needs to be practised with sense and responsibility. Nobody under the influence of alcohol or narcotics is allowed to participate.

HELPING RHINOS How we can all help Pejeta Conservancy, which is home to the last two northern white rhino and the largest black rhino population in East Africa.
Based in the UK and USA with support projects in Kenya and South Africa, we spoke with the organization known as Helping Rhinos. They are doing everything possible to pull this incredible animal back from the brink of extinction and we can all contribute and help. Jill Inglis, fundraising director of Helping Rhinos, spoke with The Logbook regarding what is being done and what can be done to help save these animals from extinction. The charity is specifically involved in antipoaching operations which include dog patrols, air surveillance and a rhino orphanage in Zululand. “Working since 2012, year on year it has increased its partnerships in Africa and increased the working income in support of those partnerships, she says.
Credit Karen Laurence-Rowe
THE SUPPORTERS BEHIND THEM
Some of the groups that they work with include the Black Mambas, an all-female anti-poaching unit that also includes a robust educational programme to local community schools. The Zululand Rhino Orphanage which offers care and protection of baby rhino orphans who have lost their mothers due to poaching incidents and Ol
Their cause has attracted prominent support from a number of places. Such as internationally acclaimed wildlife artist Karen Laurence Rowe who helped them secure vital funding for Ol Pejeta Conservancy through the sale of and auction of some of her work.
20
This comes from those governments who are supporting unscientific and redundant claims, such as China’s consideration of lifting their rhino horn ban, which is frankly so distressing that information about that can be found at the bottom of this article. And poaching is not only done in the dead of the night or in secret. There are organized hunts sponsored by foreigners who pay money to be taken out on safari to shoot a rhino for no other reason than for the joy of killing an endangered and rare animal. Rejoicing at the bloodshed their mentality can be summed up simply by: “I want to kill one before they’re all gone.”
ALL HOPE IS NOT LOST Anti-Poaching efforts are not about fighting fire with fire. You cannot take up a rifle and hunt the hunters because all you are doing is creating a cycle. Instead, anti-poaching is about removing the support for poaching by eliminating the demand. Educating people so that they know what the situation is, making them aware of the consequences and empowering them to make the correct decisions.

CHALLENGES
To change the situation, awareness is vital and is one of the areas where each and every one of us can help. All of us can show our support on social media, all of us can educate ourselves and in doing so help educate others on the situation.
Raising awareness of the plight of the rhino and raising funds to support their work are two constant challenges. These are being overcome by creating partnerships and developing innovative ways to engage with their supporters and the general public.
THE FACTS ABOUT RHINOS
“The more people made aware directly impacts their effectiveness,” Jill says, “The charity is ably guided by CEO Simon Jones and nominated trustees who together ensure a strategy and budget that keeps up to date with the newest and most effective methods of engaging with donors.”
Rhinos have been poached to the point of extinction for their horns. Because of the indifference and ignorance of those who should know better. Raising, spreading awareness and exposing those responsible for the poaching are some of the things that we can do to help. If we remain indifferent, then one day all we will have are images to show future generations. And when they ask where this peaceful, gigantic, beautiful animal went we’ll have to say, “We let them be hunted to death because we believed in magic rhino horn.”
A QUICK RANT FROM THE WRITER Poaching remains the most pressing issue facing rhino. Whereas rhino habitats are shrinking due to climate change and expansion of human populations, this does not come close to the damage inflicted to their numbers by poaching. And this is specifically related to a demand of rhino horn by the ignorant and the idiotic. It is ludicrous that people still believe rhino horn has any medicinal value at all.
HOW ENDANGERED ARE RHINOS? Rhinos are labelled as a critically endangered species. According to figures from Helping Rhinos there are less than 30,000 living in the wild today. At the start of the 20th century, there were
21
WHICH SPECIES OF RHINO IS THE MOST ENDANGERED?
possibly 200,000. Human activity has caused this dramatic decline in rhino numbers. Initially numbers dropped due to hunting, but today the main threats to rhino are poaching and habitat loss.
There are five species of rhino surviving today – Black, White, Greater One-Horned (or Indian), Javan and Sumatran and several sub-species within these groups.
POACHING AND ILLEGAL TRAFFICKING OF RHINO HORN
There are three species of rhino in Asia, two of which are ‘critically endangered’ the Javan and Sumatran rhino. There are only around 65 Javan rhinos left in the world and around 100 Sumatran rhinos. The Javan rhino is one of the rarest large mammals on earth and was declared extinct in Vietnam in 2011.
Poaching and illegal trafficking of rhino horn has increased sharply since 2007 and remains one of the major reasons why rhinos are still endangered today. Poaching is big business, and well organised criminal gangs are now well-equipped to track and kill rhinos. One rhino horn can fetch in excess of an incredible £200,000. Political and economic instability within countries can increase the threat of poaching too.
The Greater One-Horned rhino has increased in numbers up to 3,550 from only 200 in 1900 and is the third Asian species that is listed as ‘vulnerable’. Numbers have increased due to successful conservation efforts, though the species is still poached for its horn in India and Nepal.
Rhino horn trade has been banned under the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) since 1977, yet the blackmarket demand for horn is high. Driven by Asian countries, particularly Vietnam and China. It is used in traditional Asian medicine, though there is no scientific evidence at all to suggest that horn is beneficial as a remedy to anything.
The remaining two species are found in Africa. The Black Rhino is ‘critically endangered’. With only around 5,000 remaining. Numbers of Black rhino dropped by a staggering 96% between 1970 and 1995 but thanks to concerted conservation efforts, their numbers are now rising.
More recently, and particularly among the middle and upper-classes of Vietnam, the purchase of rhino horn signifies someone’s wealth and success. It is used as a status symbol.
White rhinos are classified as ‘near threatened’. There are now around 20,000 living across Africa, yet the increase in poaching levels is once again threatening these populations.
www.helpingrhinos.org/rhino-poaching/
The subspecies Western Black rhino and Northern White rhinos are now extinct in the wild. The only two remaining Northern White rhinos live at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. The last Northern White male, Sudan, died in March 2018 of agerelated issues. You can read Helping Rhino’s heartfelt tribute to him here: www.helpingrhinos. org/sudan-tribute/
LOSS OF HABITAT Habitat loss is the other major threat to rhino populations. As more and more land is cleared for agriculture there is less available space for rhinos to thrive in. Rhinos need a large area in which to feed and roam. If rhino populations end up fragmented, with no safe ‘corridors’ to travel through, chances of successful breeding and recovery will decline further.
CHINA’S INEXCUSABLE CHANGE OF LAW AND QUICK WITHDRAWAL For the last 25 years China has imposed a ban in the domestic trade of rhino horn and tiger bone. This means that any rhino or tiger product sold or prescribed by a medical official is done so illegally. On 29th October 2018 China’s General Office of the State Council issued a notice that is to allow a controlled trade and use in rhinoceros and tiger parts.
22
The notice goes on to state that
strong potential to increase the level of poaching of wild rhinos in Africa and Asia at a time when official poaching statistics are showing that things are finally improving!
“Except in special circumstances prescribed by law, the country bans all actions involving sales, purchase, use and import or export of rhinoceros, tigers and their related products.”
Having recently been praised internationally for their moves to make illegal any domestic trade in ivory, this announcement came as a shock to many, not only in the conservation world, but within the Traditional Chinese Medicine industry too. In a recent statement, the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture UK (ATCM) stated that all of its TCM practitioner members (over 700) do not use animal parts in their practices.
But importantly the report also states “Under the special circumstances, regulation on the sales and use of these products will be strengthened... Rhino horns and tiger bones used in medical research or in healing can only be obtained from farmed rhinos and tigers, not including those raised in zoos... Rhino horn and bones from dead tigers can only be used in qualified hospitals by qualified doctors recognized by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.”
ATCM has written to Chinese Government to express their concerns over this new policy, as they also believe that the ease of ban on medical use of farmed rhino horn and tiger bone will potentially put wild animals at risk.
WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS? Due to public outcry the Chinese Government has halted its plans to lift the ban. However, that in this day and age, a decision like that could even be rationally considered reveals how wide the divide has become between those creating the demand and those trying to save animals from becoming extinct.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR RHINOS? It is important to note that the State Council’s notice clearly stipulates that only horn from farmed rhinoceros within China can be used by the qualified and recognized individuals. It points out that zoo animals cannot be used under the new law, meaning that not all captive bred rhinos can be used to supply the new, legal demand.
The only logical way forward is to completely ban the trade of any endangered animal parts, including those animals that are “nearly” endangered.
But this would not mean it is good news for rhinos (or tigers) China claims that by making this change in the law they would be able to better control the use of wildlife parts in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and consequently reduce the demand for illegally harvested body parts of rhino and tiger.
Helping Rhinos will maintain a collaboration with organisations around the world to bring an end to the current rhino poaching crisis. Despite this announcement from China they firmly believe that the innovative approach of our projects in the field will ensure that they create a future for rhinos in their natural habitat.
But history tells us that even a carefully controlled legal market will not reduce demand for wild animal parts. We have consistently seen a price premium for TCM that uses wild animals. Legalizing even a potentially small market legitimizes the use of rhino horn far more than has been the case for the last 25 years and provides a loophole for the black-market to exploit.

Without doubt, any legal trade opens up the possibility of laundering illegally poached rhino horn into the legal stockpiles. This new law has the

THE FAIRY-TALE HOUSE ON THE HILL Best Views Pucón Chile With all-round views of Pucón including mountains, volcanoes and local lakes, Best Views Pucón Chile is aptly named. The main home, Gracias a la Vida, from Chile’s favourite folk song by Violeta Parra, was opened in 2005 while the cabañas were completed in 2012 and 2014 by Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman and her husband Robert. This beautiful accommodation of two houses not only boasts the best views imaginable but an inspiring back-story.
And, for those lovers of picturesque postcard evenings: in the Chilean summer months tourists and locals can relax into the early hours of the morning at the popular sidewalk cafes and restaurants. Imagine yourself sipping cappuccinos or pisco sours while watching local street musicians, mimes and jugglers ply their talented trades.
THE HOUSES Combining comfort with great surroundings, the two houses at Best Views, Amor del Lago (Love on The Lake) and Romance del Lago (Romance on The Lake), have been furnished with comfort and relaxation in mind. Each includes double-paned windows, excellent insulation, custom furnishings, woodstoves and water-heated radiators, and the kitchens are fully-equipped with modern amenities such as dishwashers and washer/dryers. Judyth’s love of interior decorating with brilliant colours and indigenous handicrafts jumps out immediately. Amor and Romance’s furnishings are a combination of décor brought from and influenced by her travels through Egypt and the couple’s journey to Morocco and one of the rugs was found on their Berber village trek in the Atlas Mountains. These have been smoothly combined with indigenous Mapuche weavings. In total there are four bedrooms across the two houses: The Green and Blue Rooms in Amor and the Marrakech and Casablanca rooms in Romance.
THE LOCATION A world-class tourist destination, Pucón is located in the heart of southern Chile. An Eden paradise of Patagonia near the tip of the southern hemisphere offers dazzling winter sports activities on the magnificent Volcano Villarrica and plenty of summer activities. The area boasts amazing trails for walking and horseback riding, and sparkling lakes and rushing rivers for fishermen, kayakers and rafters. If that isn’t enough, there are over twenty natural hot springs and many more crashing waterfalls across the majestic mountains and forests, promising an escape from stress like no other.
Each house comes with one charming bathroom shared by both rooms. The Green and Marrakech Rooms have queen-sized beds, while Blue and Casablanca come with twins. The only smoking allowed on the property comes from the outdoor barbeque (quincho) or portable outdoor grill. “And, in Romance we also have two hammocks for guests to repose while gazing at the lake with their favourite book and a refreshing glass of Chilean wine,” she adds.
Pucón town also boasts an array of restaurants, cafes, seasonal art and music festivals, a casino, beach activities and an array of shopping from upscale to artisan markets.

THE ULLMANS. THIRTY-FIVE YEARS OF ADVENTURES SO FAR
on the subject and travel, including The Savvy Traveller’s Guide to Homeopathy and Natural Medicine: How to Stay Healthy Wherever You Go! They have also travelled the world teaching at seminars in countries in Europe, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.
The tale of how Judyth and Robert came to own and run Best Views Pucón Chile is as inspiring as the property itself. Today the couple spends their time between Pucón and their North American home, which is a remodelled fishing cabin on the beach in Langley, on Whidbey Island in Washington.
Charismatic, friendly, and curious, the pair of them are globetrotters to the core, and together they have visited over forty countries as hikers, spiritual seekers, and off-the-beaten-track adventurers. Judyth is fluent in French and Spanish, which has widened the scope and depth of their adventures and after three and a half decades of exploring, nothing seems likely to change. In fact, according to her, there is still so much more to see and do.
“Whidbey Island is a popular tourist destination famous for its escapee designer bunnies,” Judyth bubbles, “It suits our lifestyles perfectly as we are both naturopathic and homeopathic doctors and have been for the past 35 years.”
“Three years ago, to celebrate Bob’s 65th birthday, we hiked the 500 miles of the French Camino de Santiago de Compostela over 35 days,” she tells us, “And just two months ago, we walked 12 days of the Portuguese Camino from Porto to Santiago.” We love to meet and greet fascinating folks from all over the world. Plus, it always fuels our wanderlust, giving us new tips for amazing future travels!”
In fact, together they have authored nine books

A FAIRY-TALE BEGINNING
THE REAL ESTATE TOUR THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Nevertheless, despite their extensive travels and adventures, even Judyth admits that the turn of events that led them to living only five hours north of Patagonia still seems improbably splendid.
More out of curiosity than logic, on the day after they arrived, the pair of them decided to go on a real estate tour of Pucón that same afternoon. It was to be a serendipitous turning point in both their lives.
Judyth reveals that this chapter of their lives began when she and Robert were perusing a British Columbian kayak magazine. There they saw the opportunity to go on a remarkable kayak trip in Patagonia with none other than Francisco del Valle. Francisco is the founder of Altue Adventures and pioneered ecotourism in Chile.
Judyth says, “Call it curiosity or fate but the day ended at a beautiful home, complete with a tranquil Buddha, gracing a deck with a full-on view of Lake Villarrica behind it. We fell in love with that property and it just so happened to be for sale.”
“It was a trip that definitely left an impression,” Judyth recalls, “There were five of us and we were able to paddle up the magnificent Patagonian fiords by day and sip pisco sours before dinner on the boat at night. It was a deeply immersive and engaging experience for us.”
However, not wanting to be too easily seduced, they flew back to the U.S. with a promise to not dwell on the photos for at least two weeks. But they were smitten, and two months later they returned and made an offer. Fortuitously, their offer was graciously turned down but were invited to stay at the house for a week while the owner went to Santiago. At this point their determination to find their own spot of paradise took on a life of its own.
She and Robert ended this leg of their journey with a couple of days in Dalcahue on Chiloe, with Francisco and his wife Yoyi. Here they took full advantage of the hospitality and discovered Chilean folkloric music groups of the area, especially Bordemar, which is still their favourite. They enjoyed various local delicacies and drink, all of which they soaked up like sponges. Following their paddling odyssey, they headed to Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, which at the time had fewer hikers than today and was populated by herds of guanaco and rhea. Then, they journeyed north through Bariloche, Argentina, the Seven Lakes and finally landed in Pucón Chile.
“Each morning we headed out, knocked on doors, met the locals and scoped out views and prices,” Judyth says, “We were certain that we were meant to be in this area and that we would find what we wanted.” It was on the very last day that they were presented with the most spectacular piece of land they had seen, a five-minute walk from the property that had originally wanted to buy and with even better views. It was, for lack of a better word, perfect.
26
Together Nelson and Ana María take care of many important aspects of the business. Including the guests, the property’s organic garden, the arboretum of native flowers and trees, and the farm animals. This includes sheep, chickens, ducks, six cats, the resident Great Pyrenees puppy, named ‘Pire”, the visiting golden retrievers and Nelson’s horse, Cubanito, who has a mind of his own. For the maintenance of their farmland, Judyth and Robert employ local maestros, “It is a huge challenge for expats and native Chileans alike to find qualified and responsible workers who will start and finish a job,” she laments, “Hence why we are so grateful for our team.”
BEST VIEWS PUCON CHILE And, the rest is history, which the couple have often considered turning into their tenth book. Suffice it to say that they named their land Ayun Mapu which in the local Mapundungún language means, “The Land of Love”. Today, everyone who visits is awed by the breathtaking views, tranquil ambience, colourful and tasteful décor, and the comforts of home. It is a point of pride for Judyth and Robert that their Chilean dream has captured the hearts of many travellers including those from North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South America. Judyth explains that the moment where a guest experiences the all-surrounding views from the roof deck of their home, Gracias a la Vida, for the first time is one of her favourite experiences in the world. They are awed by the 360-degree full-on vista of the entire lake, up-close volcano, foothills of the Andes, and luscious forest and flowers. “They all have the same look on their faces,” she says, “Tears come to their eyes and mine and they most often tell us, ‘Congratulations, it’s the most beautiful view I’ve ever seen!’”
THE TEAM According to Judyth, their dream and their business is very reliant on their special relationship with their caretakers, Nelson and Ana María Mellado. The local couple have been with them for nearly nine years and were married and employed as caretakers before they even turned twenty.
GARDEN FARMING For 4-5 months of every year, international farm volunteers are welcomed to garden and harvest the various produce, including the native maqui berries. These small purple berries are said to contain the highest content of antioxidants of any plant in the world.
“They are like family to us and are not only essential to the full customer experience at Best Views but are an essential part of our story,” she says.
27
PAYMENTS
Also, for the past two years they have welcomed bees, and have harvested 28 kilos each year of the most delicious, organic honey. These garden farms provide the perfect home for bees as they use no chemicals and enjoy a variety of flowers, trees, vegetables and fruit. The climate is also ideal for blueberries and raspberries, which they freeze for their own use.
Credit cards are accepted nearly everywhere in the area, but some of the markets and smaller cafes still only accept cash, so bring a debit card to withdraw notes from one of the many secure ATMs if needed.
AIRPORTS The closest airport is Temuco, an hour north of Pucón. You can pick up a rental car there but be aware that there is a toll booth (2500 Chilean pesos) heading from the airport south to Pucón.
GREAT COMMUNICATION Judyth personally messages guests as soon as they book and information on where to go is provided in detailed notebooks in English and Spanish. These highlight the various “must dos” for new and frequent visitors alike.
BOOKING Booking is available through major platforms, but for guests who book through www. bestviewspuconchile.com directly, there is a special gift. This includes a cache of local culinary treats, a personal tour of their land and for those staying a week or longer, a motor boat ride on Lake Villarrica.
“We are on hand to provide that special hospitality for which we are famous,” Judyth says, “But we understand that many travellers come here to enjoy their time and their privacy with the views and the area. It is the kind of unique getaway you just want to savour and enjoy.”
“Every guest becomes part of the fairy tale life that we’ve been living,” Judyth says, “And we love the idea of featuring in the beginning chapters of someone else’s “life-changing” story.”
ALLOW TIME FOR CHILE Chile is about on quarter longer than the U.S. is wide, so it is always best to allow plenty of time. Especially if you are visiting from far away and may not come again, allow at least 3-4 weeks.
PRICE: $119/night www.bestviewspuconchile. com (additional $50 cleaning fee paid to the caretakers).
Judyth recommends that guests to Best Views Pucón, Chile book for a week or more to make the most of their stay without feeling rushed. The local history, culture and hospitality are as absorbing as the views from the cabañas, and seven nights are really the minimum amount of time to truly appreciate everything.

TOWN OF 1770 BEACH SHACKS
This is top notch escapism.
ACCOMMODATION
Located on a beachfront town in the tropics of Queensland, 1770 Beach Shacks are located in a semi remote, tiny and completely unspoiled slice of Australian paradise. Inspired by a Robinson Crusoe theme, this is “island paradise” in its most provocative and sensuous form. Though not actually on an island, it does feel that way.
The first two Beach Shacks were built in 1996 upon one of two blocks of land that were owned by the previous proprietors. On the second block was the owners/manager’s residence which is an original quaint building called The Stone Cottage, so named as the exterior is clad with local smooth estuary rocks. Jan and David purchased the two blocks in 1998 and have since built two additional bungalows, continuing the deserted tropical island theme across all. There are four self-catering, freestanding pole house bungalows, consisting of one studio and three two-bedroom shacks. The interior design makes use of timber throughout to enhance the vibe which the owners have so carefully perpetuated.
LOCATION The towns of 1770 and Agnes Water are located on the sub-tropical coastline north of Fraser Island and south of the Whitsundays, about 90 mins drive from Bundaberg in the south or Gladstone in the north. The commonly called “Seventeen Seventy” and Agnes Water can be accessed by road, rail and air and are only separated by 5 kilometres. The town of 1770 is named after the visit of Captain James Cook (then Lieutenant) in May 1770. This was Cook’s second landfall in Australia, the first being Botany Bay NSW.
Additionally, guests will discover that each bungalow has been built higher than the one in front to ensure that no guest will lose out on the spectacular ocean views.
29
This includes great customer services, addressing the important details such as honest and open communication, meeting and greeting guests on arrival and personally escorting them to the bungalows at check in.
THE VIBE There is an unmistakable vibe to be found in the shacks. Created not only by the surroundings but by the creative touches like old casement windows, corrugated iron lined walls in the bathroom and hand-made furnishings. Handcrafted push out timber shutter windows, perfect for those tropical downpours, keeps the place dry and cool while melaleuca sapling trunk railings adorn the front decking.
“Our bungalows are self-catering and we respect our guest’s privacy,” Jan explains, “So we keep a low profile but make it known that we are there to help if needed.”
It is exactly what you dreamt an island paradise would look like when you were a child, when all you could think of were sword fights with pirates, ocean sunsets and waking up to the sound and smell of the ocean. Yarrrr!
THE STAFF The team running 1770 Beach Shacks include the office/property manager and three cleaning staff who are all locally employed and trained. Owners Jan and David believe that building relations is the sole purpose of their business and whenever they bring on a new staff member, they have to be on the same page.
THINGS TO DO If chilling in your beach shack watching the ocean while drinking an exotic cocktail in a coconut isn’t quite your thing, there is a lot to do. 1770 is built around a peaceful swimming beach , known as the 1770 Inlet. It is a no through town, so it has scarce traffic. The town is also near a headland, and surrounded by ocean. There are lots of coves and bays, conservation parks and a peaceful calm water swimming beach.
“Our staff represent us and our accommodation,” Jan says, “So it is definitely a team effort.”
The neighbouring town Agnes Water is 5 kilometres away with Queensland’s most northerly surfing beach. Close to the Great Barrier Reef 1770 is the jump off point for a day cruise to Lady Musgrave Island for snorkelling and diving, which is 90 minutes away by boat.
30
The local wildlife is incredible, including birds, kangaroos, wallabies, the strange and mythic echidnas and goannas. There are also many walking tracks and trails for nature lovers. And all of this is only a 90 minute drive to the airports.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND This is the sub-tropics so when outdoors, wear sun protection, including sunscreen and a hat. Bring appropriate footwear and keep eyes on the walking tracks and always carry adequate amounts of drinking water. Don’t panic if you feel like you’ve washed up onto an island paradise. PRICE: $210 - $295 for a couple per night per bungalow. Extra people above a couple, $20-$40 each per night per bungalow. ESTANCIA 440 HOTEL BOUTIQUE Great memories come from smooth holidays. Welcome to Puerto Varas.
ESTANCIA 440 THE HOTEL BOUTIQUE
Featuring seven bedrooms and located within Puerto Varas, in Patagonia, Estancia 440 Hotel Boutique offers guests the warmth and engaging hospitality of the area from the tradition German wooden house that has been converted into a delightful boutique hotel.
He goes on to explain that the house was built in 1930 and that in today’s incarnation they have striven to keep as many of the original elements as possible. Combining beautiful historic architecture with modern decorative tones and touches, it is a fine example of the beautiful buildings constructed over the years in the X Region of Los Lagos.
We spoke with Andreas Hübner who bought the property from the previous owner in 2012 and set about creating an enriching environment for families visiting Patagonia for the very first time. Having studied hospitality management in Santiago and Switzerland, Andreas and his family, who are originally from Hamburg, Germany, have skilfully integrated the Chilean culture not only into their way of life but also into the fine décor of the hotel.
Located a short walk from Lago Llanquihne (Lake Llanquihne) and only 500 metres from the city centre, guests can find a number of restaurants, cafes and bars to enjoy. It is wonderfully positioned for those seeking a relaxing stay and the opportunity to enjoy the region’s many treasures at a leisurely pace as well as those looking to get out and have some fun.
“There is a great amount of history here,” Andreas, a self-proclaimed history enthusiast says, “Puerto Vara developed when German immigrants arrived in 1853 to the village and prepared the land that was given to them to develop for agriculture. Bringing in the knowledge and machinery they turned this area into a prosperous farming community.”
As a remodelled house that sleeps seven the rooms don’t feel like hotel rooms at all but rather bedrooms. Each with its own unique look that still manages to keep to the original vintage decoration. There is a double room, a twin room, a single room and a triple.
36
All of the rooms have heating, WIFI, TVs and satellite channels. They make full use of natural light and come complete with comfortable beds, great pillows and promises of a good night’s sleep. Breakfast is served each morning on the first floor in the cosy common area.
“One of the things that we believe,” Andreas says, “Is that as a host you should always provide guests with a good shower or bath and a good night’s sleep. Everything else comes after.”
KEEPING HOUSE Andreas explains that he also lives on the property with his family, so he is always on hand to address any needs of the guests. However, ten years in the industry has taught him the importance of seeing the big picture while looking after the little details.
HAPPY STAFF. HAPPY GUESTS Building relationships with staff and reaching them on a person to person basis has enabled their team to gel perfectly, this in turn affects the way in which they work with their guests. Andreas is a firm believer in looking after your staff so that they can look after your guests.
High standards are only good if you keep them, he says, “This is the hospitality industry, lip service is not enough. You have to own your standards.” This is something that Andreas and the four team members who help run the hotel have taken to heart. It means that when it comes to upkeep, the rooms are cleaned thoroughly, redressed and left looking brand new.
“A happy staff member will result in a happy and looked after guest,” he says. Every guest is important whether they are travelling for business or are on holiday. Building a good rapport with them begins with responding to e-mails and phone call enquiries as quickly as possible and always offering as many additional pleasures during their stay as you can. This includes extra tips for excursions, restaurants or any other needs they may have.
“It is important to us that when guests return to their rooms they are surprised with the neatness and cleanliness,” Andreas says, “You need to impress guests on all the details big and small.” And this is one of the reasons why Estancia 440 has such congratulatory and personable reviews on their website.
THINGS FOR GUESTS TO KEEP IN MIND It is a very wet area and it rains a lot at around 200 days a year. Rain coats and trekking shoes are advised as well as patience, because the weather soon improves, and guests are able to see the Osorno and Calbuco Volcano all year round
37
all areas free of charge, so children aren’t going to be chewing up data while on their devices. There is free parking on site without the need to reserve, so parents can work that into the logistics of any day trips and know that the search for parking will not be something they will have to endure. BBQ facilities are on hand outside in the garden, so evenings are essentially sorted around family time. Pets are not allowed and while this means you may not be able to bring the family dog, at least you’re not going to be dealing with someone else’s untrained beast wrecking your food table.
WHAT TO DO
Ironing and laundry services are available along with daily housekeeping and a concierge service. Luggage storage and a tour desk are available as is express check in and check out. Airport shuttle to the El Tepual Airport is also included.
Happily, when booking on Estancia’s website, guests will find that there is also a well laid out catalogue of different things to do in the area. These range from activities for the family and interest tours, to fine dining and shopping. There is even more available at the tour desk so whether you are travelling as a couple or as a family there is enough to keep everyone entertained.
“You’d be surprised at how many apparently family orientated hotels and lodges fall short because they don’t realise a simple principle,” Andreas says, “Great memories come out of smoothly flowing holidays.”
NEW TOURS Andreas tells us that they are developing a new walking city tour in Puerto Varas. Covering such things as the German colonization and visiting the iconic places around the city that hold the most importance to this location’s unique story. This will give guests the opportunity to take full advantage of Andreas’ deep passion for the local history.
