Editors note

Welcome to 2020. As the first issue of The Logbook for this year I wanted to open up by saying that while the year has not had the most prestigious of starts, we can all rest assured that it will be a year of development and change because of it. Given the quite frankly bonkers political situation happening across America, Britain and Europe; the inconceivable fires of Australia and the rising tension in Central Africa, it is a time for us to remember that all trials and tribulations are temporary and as a species humankind has proven itself not only resolute in our conviction to survive but bottomless in our capacity to show compassion. So, in this issue, we have kept it very light, starting the year on the kind of footing that we want to pursue. Focussing on the positives. We’ve looked closely at safaris, hotels, glamping sites and operators to bring you the finest innovators of their industries. The sort of companies that are pioneering their sectors, improving techniques, training and methodologies.

Calamity’s foe is the collected mind. Enjoy this positive edition on us.

NILE SAFARI LODGE The New Nile Safari Lodge In Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda.

One of the first tented lodges along the Nile River in Uganda, the Nile Safari Lodge was founded in 1993 by Zahid Alam. Opened under the name Geo Lodges it was designed to be a place of natural beauty, where the presence of guests would have little or no impact upon the thriving wildlife of this legendary area. It was a worthwhile legacy, so in 2017 when the camp had begun to succumb to the marathon of time the family owned company NOVAM Ltd took over the premises. Their aim was to uphold the legacy, restore the lodge to its former glory and add some tailored appeal for the discerning modern-day traveller. We spoke with Nathalie Van Pée of Nile Safari Lodge regarding what the lodge stands for and why this legacy is worth maintaining. She explains, “Having grown up in Uganda and having lived here for over twenty years, we want to both share the beauty of the country and conserve it for future generations.”

According to Nathalie, once you understand that the thriving abundance of life in this area is nevertheless reliant on a fragile eco-system, wanting to protect it becomes second nature. And, sharing the experiences that can be had here with international visitors is the surest way to inspire people from across the globe to do the same. “Enjoying the beauty of nature has never been academic,” she points out, “People need to make the journey and see what this world is like. They need to experience it with all of their senses and allow themselves to be changed by it. This is the truth of travelling to Africa, you do not leave the same person as you arrived.”

THE LODGE There are thirty locally employed, highly trained staff members at the Nile Safari Lodge which is located at the limit of the national park and right on the riverbank. But what is truly unique about

THE IMPORTANCE OF SPACE While often understated, a sure way to determine the standard of luxury at any accommodation is the state of the ablutions. In the same way that a restaurant can be immediately judged on the state of its kitchen, so too can a resort or lodge be lauded or condemned by the state of their guest bathrooms. Bluntly, the kings of the Nile would feel quite at home here. Imagine sinking into a tub in one of these spacious rooms, soaking the activities of the day out of your muscles while watching the steam dance across the thatching. Or, languidly peering out the window at the Nile and imagining yourself drifting lazily upon those currents, while all the creatures in the grass and leaves surrounding you buzz and sing and chirrup just for you.

the location is that the lodge is elevated from the mighty Nile River and this offers guests an uninterrupted view of the wildlife that congregates upon its shores, drawn in by the life giving waters.

The clever use of space in the sleeping areas and the bathing areas has created another aspect

There are eight bandas in total. These include six standard bandas, a Family banda that includes a very popular private child-friendly nine person pool and one exclusive Honeymoon banda which comes with a private plunge pool and an outside star bed. According to Nathalie, with little or no light pollution in the area, the available opportunities for night-time gazing at the cosmos are quite spectacular. The lodge is built using eucalyptus poles and grass thatch as the dominant materials. Stilts have been used to deal with slopes and these have created spectacular views from the various cantilevering decks. Meanwhile, the steep geometry of the roofs allow the impressive structures to sink organically into the surrounding trees as if they had sprouted from the branches themselves.

which sometimes goes unappreciated. Uncluttered living space. Nothing feels as luxurious as having a lot of uninterrupted room to move around in; be it to slow dance to some romantic music with a lover after sunset, or to chase your children around before tickling them to tears. Africa is all about dancing and laughter after all.

With a unique selection of Rampel designed furniture, the bandas are a combination of comfort and simplicity with a big dose of luxury. The interiors offer the calming smell of thatching and eucalyptus, along with providing an exclusive style and ambiance that immerses the guest into the spirit of the location.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

“This is important to us,” Nathalie explains, “We wanted an eco-lodge that would blend seamlessly with nature, hence the architectural design of the lodges that has allowed us to provide spacious accommodation for our guests while keeping them in touch with the ever-inspiring Nile.”

While there is no denying that the lodge is certainly an impressive sight providing the most breathtaking and Instagram worthy views, the team understand that the real strength of hospitality comes from the attention paid to the smallest details of guest satisfaction.

9

THE LODGE Since NOVAM took control of the lodge in 2017, it has been fully renovated to its current status and 2019 has been a new start for them. “We believe that each year is an opportunity to offer something new, exciting and worthwhile for the guests,” Nathalie says, “This includes not only things pertaining to guest comfort and the general luxury of the lodge but also making sure we are doing everything in our power to protect this remarkable and vibrant area we’re lucky to find ourselves.”

“Understanding that many of our guests will have certain expectations,” Nathalie explains, “We make sure to keep lodge and suite cleanliness above the usual standard one would expect. With this in mind we implement a daily procedure sheet designed to effectively train our employees and ensure they always have the best resources and equipment to maintain the highest standard of cleanliness.”

As a National Park, the area is protected. However, the modern sensitivity of global travellers to their own impact on the environment is growing and this is something that NOVAM plan to encourage. “This is without a doubt one of the most mesmerising and humbling places of beauty you will ever find,” she says, “It’s beauty never lessens whether it’s your first night here or your twentieth year and guests always leave with a great sensibility to their place in this eco environment.”

Relationship building is also a key aspect for them, and Nathalie reveals that to build these relationships they focus on exceptional communication. As mentioned, many of their clients come from faraway lands and different time zones.

“Seize the opportunity to escape the ordinary,” Nathalie adds.

“To exceed the expectation of our guests and ensure their comfort during their stay,” Nathalie says, “We make sure that we are present at the lodge and are open to guest enquiries or complaints. It makes it easy to address any problem and find the solution.“

Nande grew up in the lovely coastal town of Swakopmund in Namibia, a region where the remnants of the country’s German influence can be seen reflected in the architecture, culture and cuisine. To showcase how such influences have affected the local cultures of the area, Nande has created a host of new tours to the delight of his regular guests. One of which we’ve highlighted this month.

PASSION AND HAPPINESS One thing that always identifies Nande however, is his gigantic and happy smile and infectious joy. It is something that his clients and customers instinctively relate to. According to him, this is not a learned trait but rather just how he is. “I love what I do, and I love that my tours help make the world a bit bigger and more colourful for those participating,” he says, “If you love what you do, everything else falls into place.”

THE TOURS A land of marvellous beauty, Namibia is truly a joy to visit. WILD GAZE SAFARIS Tanzania THE SAFARIS Mountain climbing and safari is the mainstay of Wild Gaze Safaris and as such no corners are cut when it comes to client safety and services. Ernest explains that they spend considerable funds to make their equipment as safe and reliable as possible and that their staff are the best trained in the field. The activities have been packaged in a selection of safaris, each one offering an exceptional Tanzanian experience at an unbeatable value. Each safari is flexible though and Ernest and his team are always up for a challenge if there is something different and unique that a client is looking to enjoy. For Wild Gaze Safaris, based in East Africa, 2019 was defined by the new Southern Circuit safari location in Tanzania. Today, 2020 is all about bringing communities together around the importance of locally focused tourism.

THE GUARANTEES Apart from adventures you’ll remember for the rest of your life Wild Gaze Safaris also guarantee every departure with a minimum of two passengers. Whether a safari tour has a dozen people or just two, they operate on the scheduled date and with the prescribed itinerary, featuring the same standard of tour.

We have spoken with Wild Gaze Safaris previously and highlighted how they are never satisfied with conducting regular standard tours. And how they have travelled the length and breadth of the country to find the most sublime opportunities for their clients. Exploring every destination to ensure that what they recommend is not only based on first-hand experience but that every supplier in the itinerary are up to the same standards. This authenticity is something that Ernest Lugalla, the owner of the company, is insistent upon.

Also, thanks to Ernest and his team having developed close working relationships with their hotel partners and being vigilant on their facilities, cuisine and service, there is a best room guarantee. Depending on what package is selected, the rooms could be in well located city hotels, keeping you in the heart of everything or in a safari lodge located in the heart of the wilderness. Or perhaps both.

THE GUIDES Employing their guides full time, each of the Wild Gaze Safari tour guides have a minimum of ten years safari experience. Ernest only works with the best and will accept nothing other than the finest guides to lead their tours and safaris. Some of the requirements is an encyclopaedic knowledge of the history, geography, people, flora and fauna of East Africa, as well as excellent driving, mechanical skills and a great talent for entertainment and engagement.

16

2020 This year, Ernest wants to bring tourism social activities to the local community officer and start dealing with Primary schools within the areas of their operations such as Iringa Town. Executed from their Wild Gaze Charity Foundation www.wildgazefoundation.org this will give them the chance to plant the seed of entrepreneurship in the local community to becoming more tourism focused and business minded in the young generation. only with the wildlife and nature but also with the communities in the region,” Ernest explains, “Afterall, it is when you engage with a local community that you experience the real spirit of a place.”

Ernest is also in the process of designing a brand new itinerary for new and regular clients that will involve engaging with visited villages on a direct basis. For example, in Iringa, after morning breakfast the group would cycle 20km to one of the selected primary schools and greet teachers and students and work on engaging projects for a couple of hours before lunch. After a delicious meal they would continue onto a vehicle safari and end the day with an evening game drive and dinner at an overnight camp.

SERENGETI BALLOON SAFARIS Seeing the Serengeti from the air offers a different perspective on the sheer scale of Africa and is a unique and enlightening way to see some of the continent’s most thrilling natural activities. As featured previously, Serengeti Balloon Safaris were one of the first operators to offer air tours and in many ways, the two founders Colin McKinnon and Tony Pascoe have pioneered this industry.

in the clouds and their feet on the ground, this year will see Serengeti Balloon Safaris take steps to develop themselves and demonstrate how safari companies can, and should, operate.

2020 DEVELOPMENTS Currently, they are in the process of developing a sustainability policy which will be closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainability Development goals. This will help formalise their commitment to make their people, environment and country more sustainable.

Known as innovators who continuously seek improvement to stay ahead, (or above), of the game, 2020 is going to be an interesting and impactive year for this operator. With their heads

18

IMPACT

To achieve this, they’ve had to identify the most important measures for the required criteria, work ways to improve and report on them on an annual basis and through a systematic approach, continue to improve. These changes not only cover environmental factors like hydrocarbon use and waste management, but also staff training and improvement on social and cultural measures.

Offsetting has measurable effects but the most important impact for their customers is the reassurance that their activities are carried out in the safest, most responsible and most sustainable way. Other impacts include happier and even more motivated staff, a better protected environment and an overall better safari experience.

This includes achieving Travelife and RTTZ accreditation. This process began in 2019 and will continue throughout this year and beyond. The certifications have different levels of good practise and as a business they are striving to seek higher levels as they continue to progress.

SAFARIS BY AIR With 80 locally employed staff working on the ground and in the air each safari lasts approximately five hours with one hour spent in the air. As Tanzania’s pioneering and most experienced balloon safari company it is the skills and know-how that are applied to each safari that keeps the balloons aloft as much as the hot air.

The motivation for this comes firstly from a belief in sustainability and eco-tourism and secondly from the fact that tourism is an essential part of conservation. Their upfront approach to becoming more sustainable is also an action which they hope will inspire other businesses around them and within their industry to do the same.

To operate safe, high quality balloon safaris in this environment is a challenge but it is also the most magical environment in which to experience the wonders of the natural world.

CARBON FOOTPRINT

PRICE/NIGHT: $599

To create real change, Serengeti Balloon Safaris have set themselves the task to really understand what it will take for them to be more sustainable. Instead of just ticking boxes on a sheet. For example, reducing a carbon footprint is one of the most well-known sustainability methods, and as one specific part of an overall strategy it is easily measurable and can be offset.

As such, as a company they will be offsetting their carbon footprint through Carbon Tanzania. Taking measures from their 2019 accounts, including diesel, gas, petrol consumption and air plane tickets and making an equivalent payment to Carbon Tanzania within the first quarter of 2020 to use on their offsetting projects within the country.

OUTSTANDING TENT

just business as usual. Product development, innovation, team development and expanding our boundaries is very much what we do, and it is built into the company’s DNA.”

When Outstanding Tent set about their journey in 2014, they did so with a carefully laid out plan of action. Their business, which is based in the Netherlands, has not only kept up with the industry’s development but has kept one step ahead of it, and achieving this has been down to a key principal and philosophy of action over reaction. During 2019 their business has enjoyed a year of growth, expansion and new developments and 2020 is looking to offer more of the same and then some.

THE YEAR PAST

Leaving one year and entering another we spoke again with Robin Van Kooten, co-founder of Outstanding Tent and all round glamping champion.

From a number of prominent developments in the last year, one of the key aspects that identified 2019 was the development of a new interior style for their tents. As we have covered previously, Outstanding Tent offers a full kitted out tent solution for their clients and after five years it was decided that it was time to offer a new and updated interior style.

“We’ve made a lot of progress this year along our growth plan,” Robin says, “But really it’s 24

Chic”. This has since become a base style for their tents. Glamping equals luxury, and the question was how to translate the comfort of a sofa back home into the glamping arena. Now, the Glamping Chic range gives guests the sense they are staying at a stylish luxury hotel, combined with the camping feeling of glamping.

“There were a number of reasons why we did this,” Robin explains, “Firstly, after five years we wanted to offer our clients, both new and old, different stylish options for their sites. Secondly, a lot of our competitors were using the same materials as we were, and it was no longer really a USP for us. This made us think of developing something completely different because you always need to have a good unique selling point. Something that immediately identifies you.”

The business has worked hard on this new line throughout the year. The intention was to give luxury camping a whole new dimension. Anyone, site owner or guest, can appreciate the allure of combining a wonderfully designed bathroom, a luxury kitchen with all the mod-cons to prepare a delicious meal and the ambience of being surrounded by a canvas tent.

GLAMPING CHIC To ensure the best results were achieved, they enlisted the skills of an interior architect and stylist firm who guided them through the process of developing what Robin refers to as “Glamping

“The Glamping Chic line offers two styles to suit all tastes,” Robin reveals, “Stockholm and Paris. Stockholm equals Scandinavian beauty and is characterized by its minimalist, often white details while Paris lives up to its name and bustles with full-on activity that’s absolutely chic and stylish.” In 2019 the Glamping Chic line was very well received at the eight exhibitions they attended across six countries. It demonstrated the appetite of the industry and those working in it for innovative ideas and products that offer high material and aesthetic standards and great style.

25

“The glamping industry relies on innovation and creative ideas to drive it forward and it doesn’t seem about to slow down,” he says.

ideas, or the best tents made of the newest materials. This is the beauty of the industry, as it develops its scope grows. However, as a business that prides itself on its market awareness and long term vision, Outstanding Tent have seen the drive for more complete, comprehensive packages to serve an industry that has outgrown its cottage and kitchen-tent roots.

INDUSTRY AWARENESS AND COMPANY GROWTH Robin explains that when glamping was younger and not as developed it was enough to just have an idea and offer an accommodation that was different to the standard. Now everything is moving in the direction of offering a complete and entirely unique experience. The stakes are higher than ever.

“Because of the growing number of local and international distributors that we have,” he says, “It has meant that we’re able to gather local knowledge from the frontlines and can continuously optimize our assortment and service.”

“Early in the industry, if you had a kitchen in a tent, it was considered new and innovative and glamping but as the industry has matured the expectations have changed,” he says, “Now it has to be massively different and have that wow factor. A completely new experience that is planned and executed on all fronts. I can see this as being the movement that will define glamping in 2020.”

And, as they continue to both deepen their existing markets and enter into new ones, they have expanded their operations and moved into new premises to accommodate the expected workload of the new year.

NEW WAREHOUSE FOR WORLD DOMINATION

He concedes that the industry is still wide and diverse enough, with enough categories and sub categories, to have a place for all sorts of sites and not everyone is looking to make use of the newest

One of their strengths is that they deliver from their own stock and this allows them to stay flexible and deliver quickly to clients. Their new

26

“Glamping,” he says, “Is worldwide now and we saw the potential right at the start and did not want to grow a little per year, we wanted to tap it. Nobody really knows what the full potential of the industry is because new markets are developing every year and current markets are moving too. Guests may think that glamping is about relaxing and leisure, but supplying glamping is the complete opposite. You have to keep running!”

move into the new warehouse has resulted in both a better work environment for the logistic team and an easier job of keeping up with the growing orders. The new building offers more warehouse and office space as they grow in terms of people heading up individual departments, such as logistics and administration, buying and planning as well as recruitment and basic management. Moving to a larger base of operations is an important step for any business and Robin explains that they didn’t get to this position by allowing the industry to determine their role. They made the decision.

Even a small slice of such a vibrant market place would sustain their plans for ongoing growth and expansion for years to come, but their journey to world domination in this sector may already be underway. Supplying their clients through their distribution channels and increasing their share of these sectors while keeping current clients and partner relationships strong and polished is always the immediate priority… however…

“So far we’ve sold tents in forty nine countries,” Robin says, “There are still over a hundred to go.”

“We had an ambitious growth plan from the start,” he says, “And that allowed us the confidence to take risks along the road we wanted to follow. We are always moving and preparing for new growth and investing in advance. It wasn’t that we were short of space at the old site, but we see and expect new growth in the new year and preemptively need to be ready to meet it.”

EBONY HOME Quality for 2020

“Incredibly the big things can usually handle themselves,” she says, “It’s the small details in the background that take up the most headspace like budgeting, learning which products have the most demand, how to price products appropriately, turnaround time on orders, which marketing techniques work well and which ones don’t, learning how to keep constant open lines of communication with customers and being available to answer questions.”

Ebony Home is an entirely digital online interior design store which was founded by Heather Black in July 2019. Despite the youth of the brand, Ebony Home is already made a name for itself as a supplier of choice to the hospitality and residential industries. A resource for those wanting to create the perfect habitat. Deeply passionate about the process and the artform of interior design and very aware of the influence of her products, Heather has stridden into the industry with charisma and confidence. We caught up with her as we leave one year to see what ’19 has meant for her and what ‘20 holds in store.

If the past year has proved anything it is that Heather has hit the nail on the head with her business, because even with the back-end workload surmounting with orders she is still able to apply the levels of creativity and motivation that is required of business leaders. Especially when it comes to choosing the right products. After all it is what we put into rooms that turn them into homes. There is no substitute for quality, and Heather is constantly searching for unique,

EBONY HOME According to Heather, 2019 has been a year of frontline learning. Starting an online retail business from scratch is a challenge and she has had to learn the ins and outs of the industry on the hoof while building her business, brand and client list.

28

The new collections will include high quality furniture, unique hand-crafted decor from all over the world, fun and unique lighting, artwork, area rugs, pillows and throws to create unique and comfortable spaces that fit any style. She is also providing some great options for bedding, bath, storage, kitchen and dining.

high quality products to sell in her shop. Seeking a wider variety of styles, from new and trendy to timeless classic. Working with a range of clients from home owners to glamping site hosts, Ebony Home’s quality of service and product speaks for itself. To this end she is also quite particular on her partners, choosing to work with dependable suppliers that offer quality products with reasonable prices that are easy and affordable to ship.

“As I continue to learn and gain experience with running a business,” she says, “And with the recent momentum the store has been gaining, I am confident that 2020 will be a great one and I am eager to get into it.”

QUALITY SERVICE Believing that customer relationships need to be regularly polished and maintained, 2019 has identified that Heather has a complete devotion to customer satisfaction. If her clients are not happy with a product, she offers a full refund or a replacement. A risky step for any young business, unless of course you are completely confident in the value of what you are offering not only to the business but to the customers.

PRICE: Generally, her prices are lower than the competitors and for the most part, the prices reflect the quality of the item. For example, a basic duvet set, and pillow cover can go for under $10, while she also has higher quality, handmade artisan pillow covers that run from $60-$70, and higher quality bedding for those who are looking for something a little more durable. Additionally, she has a wide variety of decor, accent furniture, wall art, kitchen and dining products, bath products, storage and organization, lighting, rugs and window treatments that range from about $4.99$1100.00.

2020 Heather says that she’s thoroughly enjoyed curating new and exciting collections for 2020 and is excited to share the catalogue of new products.

HELPING RHINOS How we can all help Pejeta Conservancy, which is home to the last two northern white rhino and the largest black rhino population in East Africa.

Based in the UK and USA with support projects in Kenya and South Africa, we spoke with the organization known as Helping Rhinos. They are doing everything possible to pull this incredible animal back from the brink of extinction and we can all contribute and help. Jill Inglis, fundraising director of Helping Rhinos, spoke with The Logbook regarding what is being done and what can be done to help save these animals from extinction. The charity is specifically involved in antipoaching operations which include dog patrols, air surveillance and a rhino orphanage in Zululand. “Working since 2012, year on year it has increased its partnerships in Africa and increased the working income in support of those partnerships, she says.

Credit Karen Laurence-Rowe

THE SUPPORTERS BEHIND THEM

Some of the groups that they work with include the Black Mambas, an all-female anti-poaching unit that also includes a robust educational programme to local community schools. The Zululand Rhino Orphanage which offers care and protection of baby rhino orphans who have lost their mothers due to poaching incidents and Ol

Their cause has attracted prominent support from a number of places. Such as internationally acclaimed wildlife artist Karen Laurence Rowe who helped them secure vital funding for Ol Pejeta Conservancy through the sale of and auction of some of her work.

32

This comes from those governments who are supporting unscientific and redundant claims, such as China’s consideration of lifting their rhino horn ban, which is frankly so distressing that information about that can be found at the bottom of this article. And poaching is not only done in the dead of the night or in secret. There are organized hunts sponsored by foreigners who pay money to be taken out on safari to shoot a rhino for no other reason than for the joy of killing an endangered and rare animal. Rejoicing at the bloodshed their mentality can be summed up simply by: “I want to kill one before they’re all gone.”

ALL HOPE IS NOT LOST Anti-Poaching efforts are not about fighting fire with fire. You cannot take up a rifle and hunt the hunters because all you are doing is creating a cycle. Instead, anti-poaching is about removing the support for poaching by eliminating the demand. Educating people so that they know what the situation is, making them aware of the consequences and empowering them to make the correct decisions.

Credit Karen Laurence-Rowe

CHALLENGES

To change the situation, awareness is vital and is one of the areas where each and every one of us can help. All of us can show our support on social media, all of us can educate ourselves and in doing so help educate others on the situation.

Raising awareness of the plight of the rhino and raising funds to support their work are two constant challenges. These are being overcome by creating partnerships and developing innovative ways to engage with their supporters and the general public.

THE FACTS ABOUT RHINOS

“The more people made aware directly impacts their effectiveness,” Jill says, “The charity is ably guided by CEO Simon Jones and nominated trustees who together ensure a strategy and budget that keeps up to date with the newest and most effective methods of engaging with donors.”

Rhinos have been poached to the point of extinction for their horns. Because of the indifference and ignorance of those who should know better. Raising, spreading awareness and exposing those responsible for the poaching are some of the things that we can do to help. If we remain indifferent, then one day all we will have are images to show future generations. And when they ask where this peaceful, gigantic, beautiful animal went we’ll have to say, “We let them be hunted to death because we believed in magic rhino horn.”

A QUICK RANT FROM THE WRITER Poaching remains the most pressing issue facing rhino. Whereas rhino habitats are shrinking due to climate change and expansion of human populations, this does not come close to the damage inflicted to their numbers by poaching. And this is specifically related to a demand of rhino horn by the ignorant and the idiotic. It is ludicrous that people still believe rhino horn has any medicinal value at all.

HOW ENDANGERED ARE RHINOS? Rhinos are labelled as a critically endangered species. According to figures from Helping Rhinos there are less than 30,000 living in the wild today. At the start of the 20th century, there were

33

WHICH SPECIES OF RHINO IS THE MOST ENDANGERED?

possibly 200,000. Human activity has caused this dramatic decline in rhino numbers. Initially numbers dropped due to hunting, but today the main threats to rhino are poaching and habitat loss.

There are five species of rhino surviving today – Black, White, Greater One-Horned (or Indian), Javan and Sumatran and several sub-species within these groups.

POACHING AND ILLEGAL TRAFFICKING OF RHINO HORN

There are three species of rhino in Asia, two of which are ‘critically endangered’ the Javan and Sumatran rhino. There are only around 65 Javan rhinos left in the world and around 100 Sumatran rhinos. The Javan rhino is one of the rarest large mammals on earth and was declared extinct in Vietnam in 2011.

Poaching and illegal trafficking of rhino horn has increased sharply since 2007 and remains one of the major reasons why rhinos are still endangered today. Poaching is big business, and well organised criminal gangs are now well-equipped to track and kill rhinos. One rhino horn can fetch in excess of an incredible £200,000. Political and economic instability within countries can increase the threat of poaching too.

The Greater One-Horned rhino has increased in numbers up to 3,550 from only 200 in 1900 and is the third Asian species that is listed as ‘vulnerable’. Numbers have increased due to successful conservation efforts, though the species is still poached for its horn in India and Nepal.

Rhino horn trade has been banned under the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) since 1977, yet the blackmarket demand for horn is high. Driven by Asian countries, particularly Vietnam and China. It is used in traditional Asian medicine, though there is no scientific evidence at all to suggest that horn is beneficial as a remedy to anything.

The remaining two species are found in Africa. The Black Rhino is ‘critically endangered’. With only around 5,000 remaining. Numbers of Black rhino dropped by a staggering 96% between 1970 and 1995 but thanks to concerted conservation efforts, their numbers are now rising.

More recently, and particularly among the middle and upper-classes of Vietnam, the purchase of rhino horn signifies someone’s wealth and success. It is used as a status symbol.

White rhinos are classified as ‘near threatened’. There are now around 20,000 living across Africa, yet the increase in poaching levels is once again threatening these populations.

www.helpingrhinos.org/rhino-poaching

The subspecies Western Black rhino and Northern White rhinos are now extinct in the wild. The only two remaining Northern White rhinos live at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. The last Northern White male, Sudan, died in March 2018 of agerelated issues. You can read Helping Rhino’s heartfelt tribute to him here: www.helpingrhinos. org/sudan-tribute

LOSS OF HABITAT Habitat loss is the other major threat to rhino populations. As more and more land is cleared for agriculture there is less available space for rhinos to thrive in. Rhinos need a large area in which to feed and roam. If rhino populations end up fragmented, with no safe ‘corridors’ to travel through, chances of successful breeding and recovery will decline further.

CHINA’S INEXCUSABLE CHANGE OF LAW AND QUICK WITHDRAWAL For the last 25 years China has imposed a ban in the domestic trade of rhino horn and tiger bone. This means that any rhino or tiger product sold or prescribed by a medical official is done so illegally. On 29th October 2018 China’s General Office of the State Council issued a notice that is to allow a controlled trade and use in rhinoceros and tiger parts.

34

The notice goes on to state that

strong potential to increase the level of poaching of wild rhinos in Africa and Asia at a time when official poaching statistics are showing that things are finally improving!

“Except in special circumstances prescribed by law, the country bans all actions involving sales, purchase, use and import or export of rhinoceros, tigers and their related products.”

Having recently been praised internationally for their moves to make illegal any domestic trade in ivory, this announcement came as a shock to many, not only in the conservation world, but within the Traditional Chinese Medicine industry too. In a recent statement, the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture UK (ATCM) stated that all of its TCM practitioner members (over 700) do not use animal parts in their practices.

But importantly the report also states “Under the special circumstances, regulation on the sales and use of these products will be strengthened... Rhino horns and tiger bones used in medical research or in healing can only be obtained from farmed rhinos and tigers, not including those raised in zoos... Rhino horn and bones from dead tigers can only be used in qualified hospitals by qualified doctors recognized by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.”

ATCM has written to Chinese Government to express their concerns over this new policy, as they also believe that the ease of ban on medical use of farmed rhino horn and tiger bone will potentially put wild animals at risk.

WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS? Due to public outcry the Chinese Government has halted its plans to lift the ban. However, that in this day and age, a decision like that could even be rationally considered reveals how wide the divide has become between those creating the demand and those trying to save animals from becoming extinct.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR RHINOS? It is important to note that the State Council’s notice clearly stipulates that only horn from farmed rhinoceros within China can be used by the qualified and recognized individuals. It points out that zoo animals cannot be used under the new law, meaning that not all captive bred rhinos can be used to supply the new, legal demand.

The only logical way forward is to completely ban the trade of any endangered animal parts, including those animals that are “nearly” endangered.

But this would not mean it is good news for rhinos (or tigers) China claims that by making this change in the law they would be able to better control the use of wildlife parts in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and consequently reduce the demand for illegally harvested body parts of rhino and tiger.

Helping Rhinos will maintain a collaboration with organisations around the world to bring an end to the current rhino poaching crisis. Despite this announcement from China they firmly believe that the innovative approach of our projects in the field will ensure that they create a future for rhinos in their natural habitat.

But history tells us that even a carefully controlled legal market will not reduce demand for wild animal parts. We have consistently seen a price premium for TCM that uses wild animals. Legalizing even a potentially small market legitimizes the use of rhino horn far more than has been the case for the last 25 years and provides a loophole for the black-market to exploit.

Without doubt, any legal trade opens up the possibility of laundering illegally poached rhino horn into the legal stockpiles. This new law has the

MUSTANG MONUMENT Experience The Spirit of the Old West

“Much of human history has been shaped while on the back of horses,” says founder Madeleine Pickens, businesswoman, philanthropist and ecopioneer, “And nothing is more American than the mustang.”

The quintessential embodiment of the American spirit, the wild mustang has, for centuries, symbolised the wild freedom and galloping spirit of the nation. Today, the aptly named Mustang Monument is the only American location that allows guests to interact with wild horses and provides them the enviable opportunity to see these glorious animals in their natural habitat. While also staying onsite in authentic tipis and glamping luxury.

ACCOMMODATION Covering nine hundred square miles, the eco resort benefits from luxury tipis and luxury cottages and an all-inclusive approach to food and beverages. Every aspect of the location has been tailored to a world class standard with the intention of leaving their guests utterly spellbound.

In 2019 Mustang Monument reopened after a period of closure with ten customised tipis, ten ranch-safari styled cottages and thirty five staff members. Open from June to September they offer the chance for visitors to the states to experience the Old Wild West. A time of heroes when wild horses galloped across the plains, kicking up dust as they chased the sun over the horizon.

Combining rustic with comfort, the safari cottages and the spacious tipis feature luxury furniture and amenities such as amazing Victorian style standalone bath tubs, indoor plumbing and heating. All within the most authentic prairie wilderness that appears untouched for hundreds of years.

36

But Madeleine points out that the most special experience happens in the morning. After breakfast, guests go on a hayride and within the morning light watch the horses start to gather… “At first there are ten horses,” she says, “Then fifty and then double that and before you know it, you’re surrounded by over six hundred. Which for most guests is over a hundred times more horses than they’ve ever seen before!”

“It was important to preserve the local feel of the location and to make sure that the accommodation and activities worked with it to bring the authenticity to life,” says Madeleine, adding, “By enhancing the wild mustang culture while at the same time, providing guests with the greatest comfort we’ve brought high luxury to the Old West.” Understanding that most guests seek authentic experiences that can be found on their own terms, these creature comforts and luxurious amenities play an important part. King-size beds, oversized soaking tubs and extreme privacy serve to counterbalance the days spent enjoying the many different activities with nights characterised by hot baths, gourmet meals and superbly comfortable beds.

CUSTOMER SERVICE In such a unique setting, with such a special offering the responsibility to maintain the everyday cleaning and upkeep of the rooms and common areas falls to their professional team of housekeepers. They’re the ones who are responsible for making sure that when guests walk into their rooms they are greeted with a perfect accommodation and the promise of a comfortable, indulgent sleep.

“Afterall, in every Western the cowboy is never happiest than when he’s sliding into a hot bath,” Madeleine says, “And enjoying a delicious meal with some good company.”

“Hospitality all revolves around customer service and guest engagement,” Madeleine says, “Guests need to feel welcomed, respected and valued and we spend time training our staff to do just this. Be it assisting guests with activities, special requests, unique requirements or information.”

ACTIVITIES While many of the most popular activities include engaging with the mustangs, the activities are not limited to the wild horses or horseback riding. There are many adventures to be had ranging from day hiking to practising yoga. Dune buggy riding, range shooting, paintballing, archery, rappelling and rock climbing. Food plays a big part in the Mustang Monument experience and in addition to three meals each day, guests are invited to indulge in the extras, such as a scenic picnic which requires a horseback ride to 9500 feet in the mountains. Cooking lessons are also available, and ingredients are all sourced locally in true farm-to-table fashion. Even the hay is grown onsite.

37

horse rides, but they leave having learnt something about the West and about how close we came to losing these wonderful animals.”

MAKING THAT CONNECTION Travelling to Africa on a safari is predominantly a “look but don’t touch” experience because those animals require to be left alone. But at Mustang Monument there is the opportunity to feed the mustangs and even ride them. It is a rare chance to connect with an animal that has been an ever present companion to humanity throughout our existence.

THE STORY

“You can see people connecting with the horses,” Madeleine says, “They connect with them and appreciate their story and will leave having been changed by this interaction. They leave realising that the world is a much bigger and beautiful place. That’s how we know we’re succeeding.”

A tale as grand as the horizon, the story behind the creation of Mustang Monument is one of courage and heroism. It really started when Madeleine Pickens founded Saving America’s Mustangs Foundation in 2009. This was her reaction to the inconceivable announcement made by the Bureau of Land Management in 2008 that the United States government was considering euthanising or selling over 30,000 wild mustangs to slaughterhouses overseas!

2020 Mustang Monument was closed between 2016 and 2018 and opened again last year to massive popularity. As their first year back, Madeleine says that she and her team are looking forward to what the future has in store.

Madeleine, who grew up in Europe and is an internationally recognised business women and well respected equine authority, animal welfare activist and philanthropist, took it upon herself to stop this. Testifying before the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands she announced her plans to develop a sanctuary for wild horses in support of H.R. 1018, the Restoring Our American Mustangs (ROAM) Act.

“We are excited for the 2020 season,” she says, “And hope to develop more awareness of both Mustang Monument’s presence as well as the cause behind Saving America’s Mustangs . And through this keeping these horses not only wild and free but alive in the hearts of all who have the chance to see them.”

“In October 2010, I purchased a property in Northern Nevada spanning over half a million acres and renamed the area Mustang Monument,” she reveals, “And this serves as a wild horse ecosanctuary, returning thousands of wild horses currently in government-funded holding facilities and pastures to their natural habitat.”

WHITSUNDAY HOLIDAYS AUSTRALIA A quality stay for the quality minded

When a business has its roots in passion and teamwork, innovation and growth come naturally while challenges are embraced as opportunities to improve and develop. Embodying this philosophy, Kristie Kaighin founded Whitsunday Holidays in 2003 after falling in love with Hamilton Island in Australia.

Hamilton Island, but they are also one of the most experienced. Operating with a reservation team which has grown with their portfolio and a team of staff members as passionate about the area as the founder. “We have all lived on Hamilton Island at some point,” Kristie says, “So our team has uniquely intimate knowledge of everything there is to do, and all The Whitsundays have to offer.”

“My husband Leigh and I went on holiday to Hamilton Island the year before in 2002,” she explains, “Really in an effort to escape the Melbourne winter. After we fell in love with the climate, life style and the natural beauty of the region we made the decision to relocate and the holiday operating business was set up soon after.”

UNIQUE LOCATION The Whitsundays comprise of over 74 tropical, sun-drenched islands ideally located off the east coast of Queensland. There are so many holiday options and so much to do in the Whitsundays that it can be difficult to know where to start when

And now, not only are they one of the most prominent holiday operators on Whitsunday and

planning your holiday. This is where Whitsunday Holidays can help by offering clients first-hand local knowledge and unbiased advice. Providing a holiday experience completely suited to their goals.

Hamilton island. Having all lived and worked in the stunning Whitsundays they have viewed every single Hamilton Island property on the website. And, on many of them they’ve spent a bit of extra time sitting on the balcony with a glass of wine and taken in the stunning Whitsunday water views… all for the purposes of research of course!

A PASSION BUSINESS Working with an extensive and growing number of regular clients, Whitsunday Holidays is a rare example of real organic growth in the hospitality industry. Going from strength to strength thanks to repeat guests and strong word of mouth referrals, Kristie has seen it grow from concept and birth.

“We inspect all of our properties every two to three months,” Kristie says, “This ensures that our team are knowledgeable and can provide firsthand experience to our guests.”

“In my previous life,” she remarks, “I worked in the Melbourne corporate world in project management. While it definitely gave me useful skills and experience in how to manage a business, I couldn’t imagine going back to it.” Of course, running any business comes with its challenges. Today the hospitality and travel market is a highly saturated one and competition amongst destinations and operators is as fierce as ever. This being said, Kristie’s approach is to combine the best locations that offer the most luxurious comforts with the best customer services and real “insider” information.

ACCOMMODATIONS They have 60 privately owned properties ranging from 1 bedroom through to 5-bedroom luxury homes. The 2-bedroom options are very popular as they cater for the average family of 2 adults and 2 children. The most popular properties are the beach front apartments, Hibiscus, Lagoon and Frangipani as well as the Shorelines stays.

THE TEAM Working with four reservations consultants, some of which have lived on Hamilton Island for several years and know the area inside and out, Kirstie believes firmly in a first-hand service. This allows them to provide excellent local knowledge when helping their guests choose the best option for their stay.

Every Whitsunday Holidays property has been exclusively selected by Kristie and guests can choose from one or two bedroom self-contained apartments, resort style homes, or luxury properties with opulent features and fittings. Whether guests are craving an intimate romantic getaway or a fun family gathering there is an option to suit.

Their team at Whitsunday Holidays is always developing their knowledge for the area, especially

CHANGING TRENDS AND INNOVATION Hamilton Island is an all year-round holiday destination and its popularity has been consistent over the sixteen years that Kristie has run her business. The island is the perfect choice for families, couples and groups wanting an island getaway. There is so much to do and see, although choosing to do nothing but lazing by the pool is also completely allowed.

For those wanting to see the surrounding islands, Kristie is very happy to oblige. Whitsunday Holidays also offer Whitsunday Sailing Charters and Whitsunday Bareboat Charters which enables guests the freedom to explore the region by boat.

seven days a week to offer their first-hand experience and local knowledge and it’s this depth of knowledge that has allowed us to dig in and really personalise our service.” When potential guests make an enquiry, the team pays careful attention to their requirements and will make recommendations based on group size, budget, timeframe and expectations.

“Irrespective of a guest’s ability or budget we can arrange something that fits,” she says, “Including self-skippered charters, fully crewed sailing yachts or luxury motor yacht charters to add that little bit of indulgent adventure for the perfect holiday experience.”

“We’re not a call centre,” Kristie points out, “We genuinely care about our guests, and know they expect quality. This is why the personal experience our staff have with the properties counts for so much. It helps them to recommend based on firsthand accounts.”

According to her, Whitsunday Holidays have reinvented the holiday booking process with their unique, personalised reservations, experienced team and unparalleled knowledge of the area. This has earned them the reputation for being the best at what they do. Kristie explains that this is almost entirely down to their care and commitment not only to the family business but the families that are staying in their properties.

Furthermore, as the number one choice for Hamilton Island accommodation, the premium service that they offer begins right at the start of a holiday. Upon arrival at the airport a valet service meets the guest and chauffeurs them to the accommodation. Many other linked services are offered at the properties to make things even more convenient, such as pre-ordering groceries, access to local knowledge and advice, and tour recommendations based on individual tastes.

CUSTOMER SERVICE “I’m very proud of our first-class customer service,” Kristie says, “Our team are available
