Glamping Supplier Focus: This month we’ve been able to take an in-depth look at some of the leading businesses supplying into the glamping industry, with a focus on creators of innovative products, pods and accommodations. We’ve once again had the pleasure of collaborating with The Glamping Show regarding the various considerations that new suppliers to glamping should keep in mind. Glamping Site Focus: As ever, the richness of the glamping industry never fails to amaze and this issue we’ve looked at some of the most boutique sites and found out what they do to keep their guests returning. Safaris and Safari Lodges: What does it take to go the extra mile and create a leading safari that will out-perform the competition? Africa’s safari industry is as deep and diverse as the continent itself and competition and success all hinge on the experiences of the client. What are businesses doing to thrive? Tours and Expeditions: Even the most heavily toured locations have hidden secrets to offer travellers and tour companies are offering these “hidden gems” into their itineraries with incredible success. Spelling good futures for them and the small businesses benefitting from this new and valuable attention.

THE “HEADS UP” FOR POTENTIAL GLAMPING SUPPLIERS By Donnie Rust Interviewee: Laura Golding
Having said that, it’s tempting to think this makes
Following on from our recent feature regarding standardization within glamping we looked to The Glamping Show for answers. Considered to be the voice of the industry by site owners and suppliers they discussed with us the considerations potential and current suppliers may have for this market. Laura Golding is Conference Producer for both The Glamping Show in the UK and The Global Glamping Summit in the US. The Glamping Show has built up its network of exhibitors over the last 4 years, allowing the Show team a first-hand view on how suppliers are faring. Laura, therefor, has an insight to what approaches bring success in the industry and which emerging trends are shaping it.
the glamping market an easy one to break into. In reality, you won’t get very far by bringing a new product to market just to be edgy and turn heads. My first tip is to remember that your customers are looking for a product that solves a real problem or meets a genuine need for their glampsite.
TLE: In your experience what should a business consider before becoming a supplier to glamping?
Secondly, creativity and thinking outside the box are a must. Glampsites offer a wide variety of travel experiences. It is totally unlike the hotel industry where there are standard sized rooms, standard facility lists and set visitor expectations. As a glamping supplier, your ability to innovate and create a novel solution or enhancement for the visitor experience is what will set your product apart from the rest.
Laura: The exciting thing about the glamping industry is the pace at which it’s expanding. As demand grows from guests for unique and individual glamping experiences, we’re also now seeing incredible diversification in the supplier space. There is no standard format for glamping and so many elements are involved in creating a memorable guest experience. So, in many ways the sky really is the limit for suppliers!
Thirdly, glamping is entirely defined by the visitor experience and that filters straight through to glamping suppliers. As a supplier you need to be invested in the success of their site, not simply making your sale. In practical terms, your product design needs to be spot on, you need to be willing to guide your customers to make the right choice for their specific site and you have to have a plan for dealing with aftersales and maintenance issues.
7
TLE: Judging by The Glamping Show, what lengths do suppliers go to so they can accommodate the requirements of their clients? Laura: At The Glamping Show we see many suppliers taking time to talk to one another, as well as to potential customers. A surprising number of partnerships come out of these discussions and, in my view, this is what makes glamping a fresh and creative industry to work in. With a constant dialogue between products and the community, there are no shortage of problems to solve and ways to solve them!
TLE: Are there any statistics available on how long glamping sites stick with their chosen suppliers? In which case is the relationship still closer to a “cottage industry” rather than mainstream hospitality? Laura: I would say that the glamping industry is very different from mainstream hospitality. In the UK it has always been surprisingly well connected and collaborative – much more about community than competition. I was curious to know if this is also true of glamping outside the UK and our experiences with events in the US show that it is.
A single supplier will always be part of a bigger puzzle. Heating and lighting solutions for example, have to work within the structures already on glampsites and already on the market. If you have a heating or lighting product installed within the material of the structure you’ll clearly need to do your research and talk to other suppliers to get the product right. As a result, supplier and customer relationships tend to last. It depends somewhat on the product, for example structures, sanitation solutions and booking software are a big investment and difficult to replace. Smaller items or accessories with a shorter lifespan are clearly less set in stone. In practice, an operator will tend to stick with a supplier until there’s a problem.
Visitor safety is also paramount and is as critical a consideration for suppliers as for glampsite operators. One severe safety incident could irreparably harm the entire industry and, understandably, glampsite operators are keen to know the safety credentials of any purchase they’re researching.
TLE: As the industry is still a young one, are suppliers generally on the same page as glamping sites with regards to goals and long-term ambitions?
It’s worth noting that when there are problems with a particular supplier, you can expect the community to share! Reputation and trust are so important in this industry and you can be sure word will get around.
8
Laura: We all want this emerging industry to realise its full potential and that point is still way off on the horizon. Suppliers and glampsite operators need to be on the same page in terms of goals and long term ambitions for us to get there.
outdoor accommodation. Accommodation and structures, heating, kitchens, bathrooms and waste management immediately come to mind and they are key players in realizing the full potential of this industry.
TLE: What have you found has been the biggest challenges for suppliers to help this industry realise its full potential?
Yet the industry is maturing to a point where there’s room for a raft of other suppliers who have established elsewhere, but want to test the outdoor accommodation market. Creating a unique and memorable visitor experience is key for glamping operators over the next few years and the smaller products, the finishing touches like cooking equipment, interior décor, outside furniture and outdoor play equipment are going to be increasingly important.
Laura: The most pressing challenges faced by glamping suppliers fall into the following categories: health and safety for visitors and those working on glampsites; sourcing sustainable materials; building a reputation with the customer base and pricing appropriately for the market.
TLE: What can suppliers do as a first step to build themselves up?
All glamping suppliers face their fair share of challenges. It’s not easy to build a beautiful product, ensure it meets all the safety regulations, use sustainable materials, maintain flexibility to work with varied locations, weather conditions, spaces and still come in at a price the market is willing to pay. Then you still have to face the challenge of building a reputation and trust in a tight knit community.
Laura: Building partnerships with other suppliers is an excellent way to stay ahead of the curve and reach new customer audiences without compromising your particular expertise. We’ve seen a lot of this among The Glamping Show supplier community in the last 12 months or so. The key thing for suppliers in the glamping industry is keeping up with it as it evolves and being flexible enough to keep up with your customer’s businesses as they evolve with it.
Clearly those suppliers who are invested most heavily in the glamping industry are those whose products are most specialized for glamping and

ANTHROPODS Cleverly spacious and comfortable. Glamping evolution at its finest.
Rik is a Chartered Industrial Engineer and studied at Coventry University before moving to Holland. A consummate polymath, prior to founding Anthropods he co-founded a successful digital token-less authentication company known as Swivel Secure Ltd, of which he is the CEO. As if having a high level of business acumen is not enough, he also speaks Dutch, plays the mandolin and when he was younger had aspirations of becoming an RAF pilot. Clearly a man able to deal with high ideas.
Glamping is one of the fastest evolving industries in the world and each year sites across the UK have to consider the upgrades that will help them remain competitive. Not only in terms of customer service but uniqueness and comfort as well. This has made glamping site owners some of the shrewdest business people in hospitality. With their eyes on the suppliers with the best deals and manufacturers keen to produce the latest and most exciting products, there is a tangible excitement in glamping for original ideas.
“While I founded the business, I was later joined by Douglas Adamson who took the role as Anthropods Executive Chairman,” Rik tells us, “Douglas’ roots are in communications and he runs a number of successful marketing and advertising companies.”
ANTHROPODS. AN ORIGINAL IDEA. Anthropods are the brainchild of Rik Currie and are stylish, reliable and safe. These are, of course, important aspects in today’s safety-obsessed culture. Glamping as a whole has had to come to terms with this and the fact that as creative as you want to get with your accommodation, it has to be safe. And you cannot get a higher level of safety and reliability than from a man who designed trains for Nederelandse Spoorwegen.
Douglas also brought a wealth of experience of the glamping sector as he has been actively involved in it through his Chairmanship of a conservation charity in the Yorkshire Dales. He is also Chairman of Settle Stories which is an arts-based charity in Settle.
10
“Like all good ideas, Anthropods germinated for a number of years and was in development since December 2017,” Rik says, “However it officially launched
ground, raked hillsides and up to five metres in the air,” Rik says, “Ground work is kept to minimum and the pods are easily re-locatable on site. Which cuts down the wear and tear of the location. They are also suited for hot and cold environments, ticking an important box for sites wishing to open 12 months of a year.”
the following year in September 2018 at The Glamping Show. This was a perfect platform for the launch and resulted in tremendous results and immediate interest.”
WHAT MAKES ANTHROPODS DIFFERENT? It is well-established that glamping relies on unique locations that can combine rustic areas and unique scenery with comfort, luxury and privacy. By making flexible use of space and with each pod including a range of quality fit-out options that suit a range of markets, Anthropods meets these criteria and has the potential to go beyond glamorous camping.
BUSINESS EVOLUTION All businesses evolve with the shifting trends and tastes of clients but Anthropods’ evolution over the last year has been unique and representative of two things. Firstly, the pace at which the glamping market is ready to develop given the opportunity, and secondly the readiness of the business to provide said opportunities.
Rik explains that by combining a creative flair with sound design principles, Anthropods addresses the needs of luxury glamping, camping and additional hotel space.
“Clients want to impress their guests,” Rik says, “And we’ve been asked for all kinds of designs for both businesses and individuals. Including pods stacked on top of pods, pods linked with glass walkways and pods in some very unique locations and it’s been a challenge to see how we can make them work. The important thing, as a manufacturer is to turn the beautifully crazy ideas of our clients into functional reality.” They have also been building up their network of suppliers, agents, contractors and relationships with the media too. “The key is the adaptability of Anthropods,” he says, explaining further that the Anthropods are easily customizable and can provide multiple levels of accommodation. For example, it can be used as a work-friendly home office or even a utilitarian base in disaster relief environments or military theatres of operations. “The Pod’s flexibility goes even further as the unique leg configurations, which are a registered design, makes Anthropods stable on uneven
11
“It’s been a constant evolution,” he says, “And it is ongoing. To offer the best to our clients we have to work with the best businesses. We also have to constantly be expanding our horizons and pushing our own ambitions.”
make the Anthropods work. Furthermore, their graphic design, web design and communications teams are built of people that they’ve either worked with in the past, or family connections. “A few of our Angel investors are entrepreneurial friends who have bought shares in the business,” Rik reveals, “They’ve heard us talking about Anthropods and wanted to support the venture. Ultimately, we want to work with people who are as invested in this business as we are and committed to making it a long-term success.”
They realized fairly early on that there’s a huge appetite for contemporary structures such as Anthropods, outside of the UK. Duly, they’ve cast their gaze a little wider than was originally intended in the early days. Rik is happy with these sorts of developments however as he knows the value of updating business plans and keeping ideas on the boil.
THE PEOPLE VALUE Relationships have proven to be paramount for growing Anthropods. Rik explains that word of mouth and recommendations are the foundation of any SME and that it’s so important to be aware of the impact a great relationship can have.
“Having the right relationship with the right person can literally change the trajectory of a business overnight,” Rik says. THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PRODUCT
He also reveals that there is a really interesting community of people and like-minded businesses out there who are willing to help start-ups hit those all-important initial targets.
Rik and Douglas know the value of enthusiastic talent and from an engineering and construction perspective they work with a significant number of talented individuals and companies. Some of these include the likes of Lesko Modular Group Ltd, based in Peterborough, which supplements the output of Anthropods’ factory in North Yorkshire, Taplanes which supplies the wet rooms/bathrooms and Create CNC who undertake all of their profile cutting. “However, from a more extrinsic point of view, it’s our intention to work closely and continue building relationships with content creators and media houses such as The Lost Executive, the wider media landscape and of course organizations at a grassroots level like the CLA.” Rik adds. As with any start-up, it takes a village of people to get things off the ground. Rik reveals that through its early days to now, Anthropods has had support from both family and friends in the form of moral encouragement and day-to-day operations. Rik’s Dad, who is now in his 80s, was an engineer himself and has been instrumental in helping to stress test ideas and thinking up ways in which to
12
“We are being constantly asked for linked-pods and we have designed one in which 12 pods are strung together on a raised platform with common gangways to each pod.”
“For example, Taplanes went the extra mile to get our integrated wet room unit that included a toilet, basin and shower, ready for the Glamping Show,” Rik says, “And our manufacturing partners Lesko Leisure and Camping shared space with us at the influential Holiday Park and Resort Innovation Show at the NEC. This helped us be financially savvy during what could have been an expensive weekend.”
KEEPING AHEAD
INSPIRATION
Rik is no stranger to the demands of a competitive market and as a team they all make a concerted effort to spend time engaging with peers and authorities in the market via Instagram and other social platforms.
Rik’s background as an engineer heavily influenced his vision for Anthropods. He saw a gap in the market for a micro-dwelling and an opportunity to create a flexible living space which was sustainable. The Pod is made (where possible) using sustainable materials. This includes such things as Western Red Cedar wood for their exteriors which require no maintenance and is naturally insect repellent, recycled polypropylene is used for the bathroom units and recycled plastic bottles make a highly efficient insulation material.
“Social media is the best way to see at a glance what’s going on in the world and to take the temperature in terms of what our audience is responding to,” he says in recommendation. “We also read a number of blogs, magazines and sites such as The Logbook as well as follow glamping and modular building publications and design innovation media. We of course monitor competitive activity, particularly from abroad.”
2019 So far, the best received Anthropod was the aptly titled Daddy Long Legs which stands at five metres and offers a very boutique accommodation that inspires as well as impresses.
LISTENING TO CLIENTS Following consumer feedback there have been 80 minor modifications and improvements introduced to the pods and they are already designing Anthropods that can be more easily transported into export markets via containers. Additionally, they are looking at different market sectors like hotel accommodation space and education and corporate hospitality. Rik explains there are also a few big markets that are ripe to be tapped into within the hire sector for festivals and sporting events.
While more of these sorts of products are going to be designed over 2019, a primary focus is on marketing and distribution strength. “We are setting up a series of agencies and distribution deals in Europe, Indonesia and other overseas markets,” Rik reveals, “Concurrently we are streamlining our manufacturing capabilities to ensure that our efficiency continues to improve ahead of our growth.” PRICE: From £40,000 for a single 5.3 metre pod COMPANY ADDRESS: Anthropods & Co Ltd, Floor 3, Regal Chambers, 22A Oxford Street, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG1 1PU TELEPHONE: 07860 420 763 or 07779 038 889 EMAIL: info@anthropods.co.uk

Fifteen years later, after a stay at a glamping site in a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa they decided to share their beautiful spot in the Waitaki Valley with others.
Two full time and three part-time staff members keep the place running and everyone is employed locally. What is really special about the place is the Expansive South Island mountain and stunning Waitaki Valley views. Located in a typical New

ECO BEACH The gem of Broome Western Australia
SUSTAINABLY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FOCUSSED
Eco Beach was founded by Karl Plunkett, after a fishing trip to Cape Villaret in 1993 left a lasting impression upon him. It’s understandable really as the area is known for its wondrous rugged beauty and its long and colourful history.
Over 70% of the retreat was built from recycled or reused materials. This includes galvanised screws, nuts and bolts and even 1400 railway sleepers used for the walkway.
Karl who is originally from the Isle of Man and already had two successful backpacker resorts under his belt, was keen to help pioneer Australia’s green travel movement and set about creating his remote eco-tourism “getaway”. He negotiated a lease from the government, gained permissions from the Yawuru aborigines and erected the first timbers of his project in October 1995. The simple design of the hut served as a prototype until July 1996 when it was refined by Perth based architect Paul Meschiati and was opened officially with 20 elevated timber chalets all linked by raised wooden boardwalks. It has grown and diversified significantly since those early days.
Environmental Consultant, Dr. Jan Talacko was employed to oversee the entire project from inception to completion to ensure Eco Beach’s commitment to environmental excellence through ecologically sustainable tourism practises was correct from the very start.
ACCOMMODATION Offering 53 tents and villas, with a contingent of staff ranging from between 7 to 20 depending on the season peaks, the resort offers not only enviable views of the coastline but the opportunities for kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing and luxury spas.

20% of their bookings come from returning guests, and increasing this percentage is a goal for 2019 as Karl sees this as an essential component of their growth and sustainability.

FOUNDERS LODGE by Mantis
In 2000, Adrian formed the award-winning Mantis Collection that today owns or represents 88 hospitality establishments situated on every continent across the globe and has become a symbol for standards and value.
Founders Lodge offers one of the best locations to see Africa’s Big Five and was founded by Adrian Gardiner in October 2016. The story begins with the Shamwari Game Reserve which he founded previously in the Eastern Cape. It was then that he discovered that the region was once teeming with wildlife and it became his vision to restore a vast tract of farmland to its former glory. With this in mind he successfully re-wilded this part of the Eastern Cape and brought explorers and discovers from all over the world to enjoy luxury accommodation and intimate encounters with nature.
He now offers a small, select number of guests the opportunity to stay over at his original residence, the secluded Founders Lodge, and to experience all of its serenity as well as viewing the Big Five at the adjacent Shamwari.
FOUNDERS LODGE With 19 staff members working at Founders Lodge looking after guests, the property was designed to provide a sense of belonging. The lodge itself was designed and built around a completely indigenous garden courtyard which leads to all the social spaces and guest rooms.
THE LEGACY Adrian is regarded by many as the founder of conservation tourism in the Eastern Cape and has left a deep footprint in the global conservation and hospitality community. His original vision connected the Garden Route with the Big Five, all within driving distance from Cape Town and Port Elizabeth and in a malaria-free region.
Each suite has a private verandah that opens onto lush lawns and the never-ending vista of bushveld and open skies. As a destination, Founders stands alone.

All six suites have a full en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower. Two of the suites’ bathrooms are open-plan while the rest are private.

PORTUGAL NATURE LODGE Peaceful, solitary and a perfect escape from our ever increasingly busy lifestyles, we need more places like Portugal Nature Lodge. Founded in 2009 by Peter a bicycle mechanic and Joke an IT project manager the purpose behind the lodge was to offer these exact three things to others, following how they escaped and discovered them themselves.
ACCOMMODATION There are four accommodations on site. One South African style safari tent, one family sized lodge tent and two Mongolian yurts. All of the tents have their unique atmosphere but what makes Portugal Nature Lodge particularly unique is the private space and the fantastic view all the tents enjoy.
“We wanted to make a camping experience for people who wanted more comfort than could be found while sleeping on an air mattress and having to share the bathroom with the other guests,” she says, “So we went for the glamping option, providing comfortable sleeping in a tent with the comfort of a good bed, a nice place to sit, your own bathroom and kitchen and privacy. We find that people can enjoy themselves better when they’ve slept well.”
Privacy is important so each tent is equipped with everything a guest needs, including private bathrooms with fantastic hot showers, washbasin and a flush toilet.
CUSTOMER SERVICE Portugal Nature Lodge is a summer location, so everything is taken down each winter and erected again for the following season which starts on the 30th March and ends October 20th. It takes roughly a month to get the land ready and the tents up but guarantees a freshness to the site which is part of its allure. This sort of attentiveness to the customer is very
THE STORY Peter and Joke gave up their life in Holland in 2006 to start a long cycling trip and ended up in Portugal in 2008 and decided they did not want to leave. After a few months of searching they found a piece of land that they loved and was within their budget. Then the work to turn their dream into a reality began. Joke explains that there was a lot of work to be done. The land had to be cleaned of weeds and shrubs and there was no house, only a ruin of a building. No electricity or running water but the potential for the land was amazing.

ORCHARD PODS in Kent, United Kingdom Rob and Becky Malcolm founded Orchard Pods in May 2017 on Barfield Farm. Forming the setting for their piece of glamping heaven, Barfield has retained all of its unspoiled rustic charm and beauty. Farmed by the Malcolm family since the 1930s, Barfield Farm continues to produce cherries, apples, pears, currants, raspberries, gooseberries, the odd plum and mulberries. There are also thriving Kent cob trees dotted throughout. A unique bed and breakfast or short break experience for couples and young families which is also dog friendly. After one season in 2018 demand exceeded their available occupancy. With repeat visitors their reputation continuously grew thanks to word of mouth recommendation and referrals. Now due to this on-going growth, they are investing in two additional pods in 2019.
Pods so distinctly appealing. Such as, the location which is rich in history and heritage, the opportunity to sleep in comfort amongst the cherry trees and especially the family-ethospersonal-approach to their guests.
THE APPEAL The pods fit snugly into the rows of cherry trees and offer a unique immersion into the orchards of an old family run working farm. There are some old varieties of fruit no longer sold commercially and little has changed on the farm over the last 70 years including a lot of the tractors! Rob and Becky run it and wanted to share a truly Kent experience and offer a tranquil escape for their guests to recharge and relax. There are a couple of things that make Orchard
The pods themselves are perfectly placed for views and each is a private kingdom with its own fire pit and outside tables and chairs. Each pod is self-contained, offering luxury glamping with ensuite shower rooms, double beds, sofa beds, fully equipped kitchenettes, indoor tables and chairs, a TVs and under floor heating. The pods are packed with all a guest needs to feel like glamping royalty.

LOCATION The historical village of Offham is a half mile walk from the orchard through the woods and has a traditional country pub serving food and local beers. Activities include the annual May Day Festival and Classic Car day staged on the green in the centre of the village and the green itself is home of the last British quintain used for jousting in Medieval times.
CUSTOMER APPROACH In order to keep up with trends, Rob and Becky make sure to take customer feedback very seriously. They regularly stay at venues, subscribe to industry publications, attend relevant events and keep an eye on what other glamping sites are doing. “We offer a personal approach from the very first enquiry, through the booking process and then throughout their stay, adding extras as required,” Becky says, “These have included installing an electric car charging point, ordering personalized birthday cakes, putting out decorations and candles, ensuring the firepit is roaring for those late night arrivals and delivering marshmallows to our younger guests… and older ones too.” This personalized approach has definitely paid off, as every single review that Orchard Pods have received has been 5 star and that is something to be very proud of. PRICE/NIGHT: £105 this is per pod per night, based on 2 people sharing and includes continental breakfast box delivered in the morning. REDHILL GLAMPING HOLIDAYS Elevated above the surrounding land, Redhill Glamping Holidays promises superb views all the way to the Cotswolds 30 miles to the East. Surrounded by National Trust oak woodlands, some of the best sunrises can be seen from this site rising over the unspoiled Herefordshire land. Early risers have the chance to see the wonderful balance of nature, arable land, grasslands and woods highlighted in the golden glaze of morning.
THAT AUTHENTIC TOUCH
REDHILL GLAMPING HOLIDAYS
Everything, save for the Geodomes, have been locally sourced. Ground staff, website design and social media support, builders, plumbers, electricians and all of the materials on site are all local-grown and genuine. The site is small and growing at the moment, with James handling the mainstay of the business with help from Fiona on the weekends. Two more domes are expected and once they arrive, they will be adding reliable cleaners to aid with the turnaround.
The six acres of Redhill and their glorious views was bought by James and Fiona Hutchings in November 2015 with the intention of launching their glamping venture. While both hail from backgrounds in animal health, they felt that there was a fierce need for real customer focus in the hospitality industry and a lack of luxurious places to stay that were built especially for couples and romance. They wanted to amend this.
“Redhill keeps you and your partner in mind,” James explains, “Over the years we have seen some terrible customer service, and this is what inspired us to try and do it right.”
THE GEO DOMES Two geo domes currently dominate Redhill, setting the standard of chic romance with hot tubs, private facilities, king sized beds and log burners. Soft rugs adorn the floor and from the bed the views that are available could inspire novels. The domes were clearly chosen as the accommodation to take full advantage of these very sights and a guest can lie in bed drinking their preferred tipple with their partner, savoring the delicious views, knowing that Redhill was built just for them.
Their aim is simple but powerful: Build the place with the customer in mind, treat the customer with respect and give them what they want rather than what they don’t want.
CUSTOMER SERVICE Relationships are of paramount importance and that’s what Redhill stands for. From booking in to departure James and Fiona want to ensure a

memorable time that will add a great flavor to a relationship, one that can be repeated year upon year.
“This feedback has helped me improve the offering to future guests, so I thank everyone for their input on this journey,” he says, adding, “Commendations and criticisms are equally valuable and help us get more of the former than the latter.”
The process of booking in is very straightforward from their website and James meets all new guests in person to welcome them to Redhill. This

James explains that he has taken guests to functions and picked them up, he has advised them where to go based on their own personal preferences and his encyclopedic knowledge of the area. KASBAH DU TOUBKAL Something Truly Unique
it offers a brief glimpse of what work was put into this one-of-a-kind hotel. Not to mention the magnificent and daily efforts by the staff to ensure the guest’s utmost comfort.
There is a great story behind Kasbah du Toubkal, which sits high above the village of Imlil in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco about sixty kilometres from Marrakech. With Jbel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa forming the backdrop to the hotel it offers not only consummate comfort and the best Moroccan food, but also the kinds of views and fresh air that you simply cannot find elsewhere.
THE ROOMS AND STAFF Imlil, and its surrounding valleys, is very secluded, peaceful and utterly separate from city life. At the award-winning hotel there are fourteen comfortable en-suite rooms, three of which can be used as a private self-contained house. In addition, there are three family rooms and the garden and large terraces offer unparalleled views of the surrounding mountains.
THE STORY OF KASBAH DU TOUBKAL The reception area is 100m below the hotel, and it is a 15-minute walk with mules carrying the guest’s luggage to the hotel doors. This is part of the journey and adds to the adventure of being somewhere truly unique.
Exploring trekking packages are available and these can include the ascent of Mount Toubkal and a stay at the recently opened Berber Trekking Lodge. This has been built in a traditional style and features solar powered underfloor heating and arguably even better views.
Then, when a guest finds out that every aspect of the hotel, from the construction materials, furniture, decoration and even the food available in the kitchens had to be carried up the same track,
34
IMPORTANT WORK To ensure the Kasbah retains its close links with the local community, Discover Ltd. was instrumental in setting up the Imlil Village Association that is funded by the hotel. Thanks to them they were able to build a hammam which is the region’s first community steam bath and recently assisted in the construction of a school for 80 children in an outlying valley. Over above this it has also been able to instigate a much-needed rubbish disposal system and provide the region’s very first ambulance and driver.
AWARDS WON THE BERBER CULTURE
Due to its unique approach to tourism, Kasbah du Toubkal has won numerous travel awards. While it is certainly a standalone example of providing the best location and comfort, it was also restored very sympathetically to its original design so that guests often believe it to be a hundred years old. It is mentioned on their site that this is an approach that has been followed in Morocco since His Majesty, King of Morocco set it as a regional standard, ensuring other developments follow but do not sever the connection to the past.
A stay at the Kasbah is a unique chance to learn about the Berber culture and simple lifestyles of these proud mountain people who have changed little over the centuries. The village of Imlil comprises some five separate settlement areas with a population of just 1,500. Its location is at the end of the main road system, beyond which narrow footpaths and precipitous mule tracks are the only channels of communications with the outside world.

BUFFALO SAFARI CAMPS The Only Fairtrade Safari in Uganda Founded by Tim Grover and some likeminded, adventurous friends in 2012 as a partnership to provide the best wilderness camping value in Africa, Buffalo Safari Camps is the only Fairtrade registered safari provider in Uganda. From humble beginnings to their current position as a leading innovative force in the Ugandan industry we spoke with Tim Grover, regarding the why and the how.
DISTINGUISHED BY QUALITY
BUDGET TO DEEP POCKETS
Tim Grover worked in international development and then as a lodge manager for three different Ugandan lodges before setting up Buffalo Safari Camps. According to him, the main thing that distinguishes Buffalo Safari Camps from their competition, of which is there is plenty in Uganda, is quality. He explains, “To provide the best wilderness camping you have to have highly trained guides and equally talented safari chefs. The mind reacts best to new and engaging sights and sounds but the body runs on a full stomach. You need both.”
With special attention to the details of the experiences that the clients are wanting to enjoy while on their African adventure, each safari is bespokely designed and shaped around the conversations had before anything is planned. Uganda, not unlike its neighboring countries in the region, benefits from an almost overwhelming wealth of natural heritage, sights and wildlife. Part of the task, Tim reveals is managing the expectations of the clients because even on their longest safari of three weeks, it is simply impossible to see everything that the country has to offer.
This kind of business acumen is learnt through experience and has been gained through their focus on continuous business building and development. Their business began with camping trips to Kidepo Valley NP and university and volunteer groups that Tim reveals gave them their grounding in providing catered safari camps.
“Each safari is merely a portion of Uganda,” Tim says, “We engineer the safari based on what we know the client wants and our experience of where, when and how to make it happen. Every new client benefits from a custom created package following our well investigated routes and tracks that we know will bring them as close to things as possible. We update them every year to keep with the changing landscape and so we don’t cause any damage with overuse.”
“Since then, while we still do that side of things, we have grown into a provider of great value camping experiences that incorporate our unique Ugandan bell tents, the more traditional lodge safaris, for travelers on a budget and for those on the top end.”
Part of their appeal is that Buffalo Safari Camps caters to a wide range of individuals and groups. Ranging from university, volunteer and missionary groups, honeymooners, birders, adventurers, families and individual traditional safari goers. It is uncommon to find one business that can offer such a wide range and Tim believes this is one of the things that makes them unique. The other is the tight family ethos of the holds Buffalo Safari Camps together.
36
responsibilities overlooked by many. These responsibilities include producing highly trained staff, ensuring comprehensive public liability insurance, conducting fit for purpose E.U standard risk assessments and first aid training.
“We are very tight-knit, the shareholders are friends and all the staff socialize together as well as work together,” Tim says, “It makes for a strong team spirit and this translates directly as value to the client.”
“We are now entering our fifth year of providing safari services to over 200 of their volunteers each year,” Tim relates, “We also build relationships outside our direct area of business, for example being a longtime supporter of our local rugby team and involved in youth development.”
THE STAFF There are eight staff and the training that they are provided with in areas such as 4x4 driving skills, first aid, safari guiding, birding, catering and even accountancy is evidence of the standards that are expected. Tim reveals that they only recruit locally and earning the trust and loyalty of the staff is the key to a happy business.
SHIFTING TRENDS Besides their membership in the Association of Uganda Tour Operators and their dissemination of product information in Uganda, Tim explains that it is mandatory for all of their staff to undertake familiarization visits at least twice a year. This involves visiting their marketed destinations in order that they can be sure that they’re offering the right product, activity and accommodation options to their clients.
“We provide as high a quality of training as possible,” he says, “For example the level of driver training is the highest in Uganda and we’ve a great family atmosphere in the company. The fact that we have been able to build on the strengths from our original staff is something we are very proud of.” Buffalo Safari Camps are committed to building long lasting relationships throughout their business and beyond it. With their staff and suppliers this is evidenced through their recent approval as a Fairtrade tour operator and for entities such as East African Playgrounds they offer outstanding value for money to their volunteers. Additionally, they are able to offer the high-quality aspects of the business
“We are not tied to any lodges or other companies and so we and our clients are free to choose what suits them best,” he says.
37
non-tax paying companies who, from an industry standard, bring a bad light to those authorized businesses. The issue with these cowboy safaris is that without the proper certifications, they put their clients at risk as much as themselves. And some of these businesses have also been associated with illegal matters in the country.
Frequent field visits to ensure that their product remains relevant, friendly relationships with their competitors and of course always getting thorough feedback on all aspects of their services from their clients is crucial to the business. To ensure this happens smoothly they recently employed an IT consulting company to modernize their website and keep it and their social media presence up to date.
“There is only one real way to deal with all of this of course,” Tim points out, “You just have to keep good business control, tick all the boxes and be better than them.”
“We live in a social world driven by communication,” he says, “You have to be able to communicate with your clients immediately nowadays.”
FAIR TRADE AND FAIR RETURNS As the only tour company in Uganda that is Fair Trade approved, they donate to Uganda Conservation Foundation, Water Compass and East African Playgrounds, and support Jinja Hippos rugby club, a much-loved communitybased organization.
INSPIRATION And what was the inspiration to build the business in the first place? Tim reveals that the real beginning of Buffalo Safari Camps can be traced back to their time doing camping trips to Kidepo. “At the time the area was really accessible only by flying in, but we had fallen in love with the place and we thought it could be done on a budget,” he says, “Then our clients asked if we could provide the same services elsewhere and of course we obliged them, and our business has grown from there. All our guys are still energized by safaris, animals, culture and birds and just love sharing their beautiful country.”
Informally they have also committed to the elimination of all single use plastics in their safaris and plant two trees for every client. The trees are planted as part of a number of sustainable, mixed forestry/farming projects under the guidance of Greening Uganda, a local NGO. Tim says, “It is all of our responsibility to sustain the world around us and little things like this make all of the difference.”
CHALLENGES
COMPANY ADDRESS: Plot 2, Main St., Jinja, Uganda
While guests and clients would remark on the ease and efficiency of the tours, and while the landscape seems open and free to all, Uganda does come with its own cache of challenges. Things like complicated government licenses, high taxes and the fickle nature of tourism are just a handful of things to deal with behind the scenes.
TELEPHONE: +256 782 805639 +256 798 428098 EMAIL: info@buffalosafaricamps.com
“We work in a field highly influenced by the media and the news,” Tim explains, “If an Ebola outbreak in West Africa occurs or a Zika Virus outbreak in Brazil, it has the effect of reducing visiting numbers because of lowkey global panic. This is not isolated just to us but is the tourism industry in general.” One of the other areas which provides an ongoing challenge is the competition from unqualified, unlicensed and

RWETEERA SAFARI PARK ACCOMMODATION
Officially founded in 2010, Rweetera Safari Park has since become one of Uganda’s most rewarding destinations to explore. Located just outside Kibale National Park it is ideal for tourists visiting the area for the first time or returning for another adventure. As there are several National Parks including Kibale Forest, Queen Elizabeth, Semliki Game Reserve and National and Mountain Rwenzori National Park you need a good base camp to travel from. And, for those wishing to travel less and see more, Kibale National Park is within walking distance.
There is a range of accommodation at the park, and Peter explains this is to meet every sort of need and budget. There are bandas, cottages/ wood cabins and six secluded standard size types of tents.
THE LASTING MEMORIES Since it was founded, the area has hosted many families and has a reputation for generating the sorts of memories that will be shared and remembered for a lifetime. After all, childhoods are shaped around vacations that involve adventure, camping out, and nights spent around a fire on a shore lake in a crater.
LOCATION Lying within the tranquil Ndali-Kasenda crater area Rweteera Safari Park has been laid out with nature in mind, creating a sense of comfort and relaxation in the chimp and crater lakes region. There are three main sorts of accommodation at the park, mainly lodges, safari tents and camping grounds. Perfect for families with kids who want to show their independence and camp out in tents with friends or siblings in a safe but “outdoors” environment. Perfect for groups of people with varying accommodation tastes amongst their members and perfect for couples or solo travellers wanting to melt into nature. Peter Rujabuka, operations coordinator for Kibale Tours, who also runs Rweteera Safari Park says, “We don’t offer boring luxury here, we offer adventure during the day and comfort at night. The cabins are cozy and private, our safari tents have showers with ample hot water and the camping ground is perfect for tents.”
“Rweteera Safari Park also includes a children’s playground, an on-site restaurant and a bar,” Peter says, “And to support the adventurers heading out we even offer packed lunches to keep them fuelled with good food.”
40
THE ADVENTURES AVAILABLE Uganda is a land of natural treasures, especially the Ndali-Kasendi crater which is a hive of natural activity. The area has long been popular with fishing and canoe enthusiasts keen to get their feet wet. There are cycle paths and car tracks for those wishing to go out for a ride or a drive and both bikes and cars are available on the property for hiring.
“Even a gentle hike during the day is rewarding,” Peter says, “Rweteera Safari Park is located amongst four crater lakes in an area characterised by rolling hills, vanilla plantations, forests and the magnificent lakes themselves. Definitely worth a look.”
onto the boundary of Kibale National Park, or the excursions to the Fishing Village Kyantambara which is a scenic little village on the lakeshore.”
THE PEOPLE Cultural tours have been growing in popularity in recent years and with good reason. It is a great opportunity to learn more about the people of a region and find out how the land, the animals and the climate has shaped their culture, their beliefs and their approach to life.
While the safaris are handled by Kibale Tours and involve some of the most engaging safaris, Rweteera Safari Park definitely takes full advantage of its location to offer guests something special. After all, after days spent in cars on safaris and transfers, maybe a walk around the crater lakes to stretch the legs could be perfect.
“The Ugandan culture and traditions are unique in Africa,” Peter explains, “It is important that our tours cover a range of topics to properly demonstrate this, everything from local brew preparation to coffee activities.”
Peter says, “There are no predators in the crater lakes and amongst some of the other popular guided tours that are offered, the guided walk through Lake Nyabikere and the swamp wetland area is very popular. Also, our guides are very highly educated regarding the species of monkeys, birds and trees found in our nature reserve.” Some of the other tours include the Mahoma Waterfall Tour and the Crater Lake Hikes which are a must if you’re a fan of lungfuls of fresh air and a complete disconnection from hectic lifestyles. This is a chance to see the best of Ugandan forna and fauna. “There are a number of favourite activities that have developed over time at Rweteera Safari Park, which have become favourites amongst guests,” Peter reflects, “For example, we offer romantic evenings out with our Lakeside Dinners, where diners can have a view over the lake and
41
There is also the chance to see the traditional cultural dances performed by locals. This is a lively, hour long performance incorporating drama, dance, hand-made music instruments and audience-participation riddles. In the Bakiga tribes both men and women dance by stamping
the ground barefoot and the harder you do it the better and cracks upon the floor are an indication of the party success!
TREE PLANTING Peter explains that due to the high precipitation, complex landform and undulating valleys, as well as continual human disturbances and previously poor land management, Rweteera Safari Park area has been subjected to severe degradation of the vegetation and soil. The project contributes to climate change mitigation through planting of indigenous tree species and assisted natural regeneration activities. The purpose of the tree planting activity is to realize multiple socioeconomic and environmental benefits like climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, local community development and soil erosion control. To date over 200 indigenous trees have been planted at Rweteera Safari Park which has encouraged the sustained regrowth of the natural fauna which plays an important role in the ecosystems of the area. “Plant a Tree for Africa is a

activity. They’ve found that this activity enhances the community bond and elevates the status of women by ensuring their participation in the tree planting activities.
HOME STAYS. A UNIQUE CHANCE TO REALLY GET INVOLVED. For those travellers seeking a real opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture the Home Stays is perfect. As a homestay guest, you participate in the activities of the host family and they become your guide during your stay. Provided with local meals, exploring together as a group and living in the village you’re treated less like a guest and more like a member of the community.
Peter explains that Kibale National Park is renowned for its diversity of monkeys and great apes, of which the best known is the chimpanzee. Sadly, deforestation in the past 20 years has led to habitat degradation and endangerment of biodiversity. Thankfully, tree planting activities at Rweteera Safari Park in conjunction with work done with the local community will be able to restore this area.
Village walks, canoeing, traditional story telling from the village elders, food preparation, weaving, milking and games with village children are some of the activities expected within the community. But also guided forest and nature walks, learning the local traditions and history, helping with village chores, and if you are lucky even a local wedding ceremony! POSITIVE IMPACTS Peter says, “Restoring the trees will improve the quality of water in the surrounding areas. It will also restore the habitat of the chimpanzee and other primates that are seen around Rweteera Safari Park.” Furthermore, according to him, the tree planting activity creates employment opportunities to local communities including planting the seeds, weeding the growth and tending the young trees. Currently almost 20 people are involved in the

In fact, any visitor to this area is always amazed at the sounds which range from deafening silence at high noon to a frenzied choir of animal, insect and bird sounds at dusk and dawn.

Each opportunity to experience the wild is carefully constructed to get the best out of it. These designed safaris create days of wonderous activity and nights of deep, uninterrupted sleep.
“We always employ locally,” she says, “We believe that it adds a credibility to our lodges and makes full use of the local talent available.” The other important area is cleanliness. Leanne explains that guests immediately judge something on how clean it is, so they have check lists and managers that do room and main area checks, ensuring that all living areas have been cleaned thoroughly.
THE STAFF Lemala Camps and Lodges employ 218 people in total, spread across such incredible sites as the Lemala Kuria Hills and Lemala Mpingo Ridge Tented Lodges. Forty-four of them work at Nanyukie and while all the lodges share in splendid locations offering the kind of picturesque views that take your breath away, it really is the staff that makes the stay worthwhile.
“Regular training is provided every couple of months,” she adds, “This gives us an opportunity to re-vitalize the cleaning routines as well as incorporate any new training. This approach of regular retraining also extends to other areas of the business such as the chefs, who have an ex group chef that comes in every three months to retrain.”
“It is always down to the staff,” Leanne says, “This is a rule of hospitality and it doesn’t matter if it’s a hotel in the middle of a city, a motel on the side of a highway or a luxury one-of-a-kind lodge that is miles out in the wilderness. If the staff are not carrying the banner of the business and being its ambassadors and providing an “above expectations” level of service, it can sully a vacation.”
THE RELATIONSHIPS Building relationships is the founding stone of Lemala. People talk. And there is a known fact that if a guest is unsatisfied about a stay, they will tell more people than if they are satisfied. However, if a guest is amazed at a stay, they’ll never stop talking about it.
As expected, Lemala Nanyukie’s staff quality speaks for itself. From the safari guides in the vehicles to the chefs in the kitchen, everyone is fully trained for their roles, motivated and
Leanne says that their aim is to leave their guests genuinely spellbound by their stay. She adds that

part of achieving this is creating a really strong relationship so that a guest can completely relax. “We speak with the guests during their stay,” she says, “And after their departure we speak to every guest to follow up on their stay. This is important because if you have the relationship right, they’ll give you an honest appraisal of what you’ve achieved.”
2019 This may not be the crowning achievement of Lemala Camps and Lodges either. Leanne reveals that there are many more things coming in 2019 but doesn’t want to spoil the surprise. “Rest assured though, considering the places that are available so far, it will be very special,” she says. OMBENI AFRICAN SAFARIS Experience and Small Details
man of principle who leads with impeccable expertise and professionalism. These attributes have propelled him to the front of his industry, as well as his experience in tourism, wildlife, hotel management and the culinary arts. Enabling him to become one of the leading tour operators in East Africa.
Ask anyone who has been there, and they will tell you, Tanzania is a very big place. It has Mt. Kilimanjaro which is Africa’s tallest mountain and one of the largest and most diverse populations in the world. Consisting of 49 million people, 120 tribes and over 126 different languages. This vast landscape has come to epitomize what it means to be in Africa. So, who better to show you this impressive and endless country but a Tanzanian borne native whose life’s work has been to show the best of this colourful land? Enter, Ombeni (Ben) Pallangyo, President and CEO of Ombeni African Safaris and Founder and Chairman of The Ombeni Foundation. Ben has spent many years working in the tourism industry and has helped shaped what it looks like today in Tanzania. Working his way up through leading tour companies in East Africa, he is a
“We continue to lead the best and most memorable trips to Tanzania and beyond,” he says, “Working with a range of people from couples to larger family groups, government officials, corporate executives and adventure seekers.”
THE SECRET. EXPERIENCE AND SMALL DETAILS. Ben knows the value of creating an experience that will last a lifetime. Indeed, by setting this as his standard it means his safaris and tours have a greater impact.
50
“Ombeni African Safaris is award-winning for a reason, because we take people out to explore Africa’s back-of-beyond,” Ben says, “As an African born company working with a remarkable team of African experts, we understand this land fully and are able to get the best out of her for our clients.” And it is a combination of this experience and creativity that has put them ahead of their competitors. For example, Ombeni African Safaris are not going to just pile you into a jeep and drive you around a national parking pointing at animals as you zoom past. Perish the thought. Instead, Ben has created packages that involve many opportunities to sit down and appreciate the value of the views and the dignity of this magnificent land. “You awaken to the root of Mount Kilimanjaro with the sun just cresting over her peaks,” Ben describes, “Then before anything else the day starts with the aroma of coffee Robusta and Arabica from the farms of the Ombeni family. The African landscape and everything in it has had a long time to grow and colour itself, sometimes the best way to appreciate it is to sit down and watch and get lost in the mythos of it all.”
THE SAFARIS One thing that can be guaranteed with Ben and his high-energy approach to business is that you will get a personalized safari with a difference.
The distinctive tours are set about to allow guests to choose their own style to explore Tanzania and Africa at large. Always with careful considerations to the small details to ensure personal safety, security and comfort. Looking after these details may be as simple as providing all guests with an itinerary for the following day’s activities the night before. Or ensuring that there is adequate water available for guests, or mosquito repellant. Ben reveals that some of these little details can make all the difference:
“We encourage our guests to explore Africa the Ombeni Safari way,” Ben says, adding, “And if they don’t want to then they’re on the wrong tour. The moment the safari begins we are turning safari dreams into reality and crafting golden memories for our guests. This takes creativity and innovation.” He goes on to explain that relying fully on his team is part of the success of the business. By allowing his staff the freedom to personalize any itinerary so that it fits perfectly with the client is essential to helping them fully immerse themselves in the African culture in a way that is unique to each of them.
“We started catering our guests with ornithologisttested and approved binoculars,” Ben says, “Because people wanted to watch the twirling pink flamingoes as they dance. Normal binoculars did not do them justice and it is too beautiful for visitor to miss.” 51
“We believe people want to be immersed in nature and not in fellow tourists,” Ben says, “And that for a personalized tour you need to go somewhere unique.” This last part is particularly interesting as thanks to the team’s experience in Africa as well as family ties, there are parts of the continent that are open to them that are not open to other companies. Offering their guests an extremely unique safari experience. Drinks and meals are included and there is no need for tipping. This will come as a relief to many a safari traveler who has discovered at the last minute that they’re expected to tip the guides. Ben will not have this. “Hidden costs are not something that we embrace,” he says firmly, “Nor do we believe in assigning the responsibility to our travelers. The guides do not go without however as we sort it quietly and professionally.”
“Who wants to go on an ‘ordinary safari’?” Ben asks with distaste.
UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS
In fact, there is a list of things that make Ombeni African Safaris truly outstanding. A reminder of how even little things can have a major impact on a person’s ability to really enjoy themselves.
There are ways to see nature and then there are ways to really see it. A hot air balloon safari ride at sunrise is a vehicle for seeing it in a way you will never, ever forget.
THOUGHTFUL TOUCHES
“Imagine a morning fog covering the Serengeti like a blanket with the sun peaking just above the horizon as a peaceful quiet surrounds you,” Ben describes, “Your pilot lets the fires blaze into the expanse of the hot air balloon above, and then… you’re aloft for your unpredictable hot air balloon Safari ride.”
For example, while the safaris can be made with large and small groups the Land Cruisers are never crowded. While there are enough seats for eight people, they only take five per vehicle allowing everyone to have a window seat for a better view.
52
THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING BACK Ben explains that Ombeni Safaris is committed to responsible travel while investing in Africa and leaving it a better place for future generations. This includes working in a sustainable fashion, thinking in a nature-friendly way and setting an example.
“We have to think and act now to preserve the natural world we have for future generations,” he says, “And we are continually working out new ideas for Green Africa.”
Here, with an eagle eye view of the perfect landscape, time stands still as Africa’s Great Migration happens below. Involving white-bearded wildebeest moving in their thousands they darken the Serengeti like a flood, and this vantage point is the best way to appreciate the sheer scale of these animals’ movements. The morning trip ends with a champagne breakfast in the bush and is a great way to start the day.
THE OMBENI FOUNDATION The Ombeni Foundation is a non-profit, missionbased organization dedicated to supporting and providing for the needs of the people in the village of Mount Meru Tanzania and others. Ben set it up to support multiple projects to ensure the population meets basic human needs such as shelter, food, medical support and school and sporting supplies.
NEVER FAR FROM HOME Ben now lives in Madison, WI, but is still close to his cultural and familial roots in his home land. He explains that all of his life and accomplishments sprout from the roots he set up there and he aims to give back to the village that raised him. “I feel blessed with opportunities, resources and associations in America that have put me in a position for the benefit of my native people,” he says, “You can’t take your good fortunes for granted and you must always remember where you come from.”

SILVER COMPASS TOURS Wild Heart of Italy Tours. Completely off the beaten track.
Silver Compass Tours was founded by Kelly and Paolo Picarazzi and established in 2014 in Orange which is an emerging cool-climate wine region in New South Wales, Australia. Kelly is Australian and Paolo is Italian, and their business covers both regions with tours focused on taking guests away from the “touristy tours” and providing them something authentic and real.
dialect, and each village in Ciociaria has a different dialect. Paolo understands them all and is the designated translator.
WILD HEART OF ITALY
CIOCIARIA
“We like to let our Ciociarians tell their stories to our guests in their own language with Paolo translating,” Kelly explains, “Most understand English but they’re too shy to speak it.”
The tour lasts eight days but only touches on everything that Ciociaria has to offer. It was the food and wine destination of choice for Roman Emperors over 2,500 years ago but over the last two centuries it has become largely forgotten. It also has an amazing history stretching back to prehistory when dinosaurs walked its valleys and there is evidence that early humans settled there over 700,000 years ago.
“Only the Locals Know the Best Places to Go” The Wild Heart of Italy itineraries are completely off-the-beaten-track with many of the destinations being in regions that would be difficult to reach if you didn’t know the area. Paolo is a local to the area which is handy as they speak Ciociarian

2019 In 2019 Kelly and Paolo are extending their Wild Heart of Italy itineraries into the neighboring region of Molise. Ciociaria and Molise were deeply connected during the Samnite civilization in the Etruscan era, and they share similar dialects and traditions. Both are completely untouched by tourism and the local communities are thrilled at the thought of sharing their culture and history with international visitors.
WHAT TO EXPECT Kelly and Paolo have gone to incredible lengths to ensure that they open up the door to some unique experiences. A shortlist includes lunch in the garden of a 16th Century noble’s villa with the descendants of the last Italian queen. Private tours of one of the world’s most beautiful gardens Il Giardino di Ninfa. A personal tour by a senior monk on the most incredible art history within the walls of the Benedictine monastery. The same monastery where St Benedict actually founded the order around 400 AD.
They also offer food and wine tours to the Orange wine region in Australia where they currently live. For the past two years they have been focusing on domestic visitors, but this year they will be opening up their packages to international visitors by extending them to 5-7 days.
A close friend of Kelly and Paolo’s is one of Italy’s best pecorino cheesemakers. His cheese has been awarded DOP cultural heritage status and he’s taken them and a group foraging in fields for wild herbs and showed them how to make ricotta cheese.

Interesting fact: the same cheesemaker threw a lunch party for them in his house which just happens to be an 18th century villa where DH Lawrence once stayed to complete his novel ‘The Lost Girl’.

Other parts of the tours include a medieval banquet under a castle, wine tours through Ciociaria’s three wine regions of Piglio DOCG, Atina DOC and Anagni IGT to sample the Cesanese (red) and MAturano (white) wine indigenous to the region, and endless opportunities to take part in one of Ciociaria’s finest and most loved pastimes. Preparing and eating really, really good food.
COMMUNITY IMPORTANCE Kelly has completed a Certificate of Sustainable Tourism with the United Nation’s Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and Silver Compass Tours is a member of the World Food Travel Association. They are a sponsor of a cultural heritage festival that is based in one of their home villages in their itinerary, Picinisco. The ‘Pastorizia In Festival’ which means Festival of the Shepherds, and

MOUNT KENYA ADVENTURES Peter K. Ngatia and Charles Gichuki founded Mount Kenya Adventures in 2015. Inspired by the love of nature and exploring the many tourist attractions that Kenya has, they wanted to offer something thrilling for travelers coming to their home land. Peter has had over 30 successful summit attempts at Point Lenana standing at 4895m on Mt. Kenya. Whether it be climbing Kenya’s highest mountain Mt. Kenya or touching the sky on Africa’s rooftop, Mt. Kilimanjaro or even, counting the wildebeest during the annual Great Migration in the Masai Mara, they have it covered with something unique and exciting.
THE ADVENTURES Each adventure lasts between 5-6 days and a variety of trips are available to give clients ample choices to choose the best adventure for them. Mount Kenya Adventures also makes sure that every trip comes with experienced and engaging guides, porters and highly skilled cooks to make the adventures satisfying and thrilling for all the clients. Different accommodation types are available depending on what kind of trip is being offered at any particular time. Naturally, with such an array of tours available from mountain trekking to savannah expeditions, the accommodation has to suit the location. For Mt. Kenya climbing trips, they offer camping in tents or in Bandas and for trips in the national parks and reserves, they partner with hotels and lodges that offer services from the budget range to the luxurious. Budget is something that is discussed ahead of travelling and the trip is planned and crafted around this.
RELATIONSHIPS Peter explains that building relationships is the backbone that has sustained their presence and helped them grow as a business. According to him, without new and spirited relationship building, no growth can really be achieved. And, to achieve great relationships takes a few things which Mount Kenya Adventures have mastered. Such things as excellent, timely and accurate communication, updates on the happenings before and during safaris, balanced, healthy and delicious food and most importantly putting the safety and comfort of clients first.
SUSTAINABILITY WORK Mount Kenya Adventures work and partner with a number of conservation initiatives and institutions, especially in tree planting to improve and conserve the environment around the mountain. Working together to sustain the natural heritage is something that the founders are very keen on..
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND Peter advises any would-be travelers to Kenya that there are a couple of things to make sure of before embarking. These include knowing where they want to visit and for how long, making sure they have met the necessary visa requirements in advance and have the necessary immunizations done in time. KIBALE TOURS A comprehensive Ugandan Experience
The best way to protect the natural heritage of this planet is to engage and educate people. If tourists visiting Uganda can be entranced and moved by witnessing wildlife in its free and natural habitat, by experiencing the culture of the people and learning the value of protecting what we have, then we are doing something right for the future generations of this world who will enjoy it.
The best guides are the ones with enough experience to predict where the most likely area will be to locate a certain type of animal. Then to follow the tracks and signs left behind, sometimes subtle and almost invisible to the untrained eye. Then, knowing how to position the party of guests in such a way to provide the best views and interactions without getting too close to disturb the animals and cause them to leave.
Kibale Tours was founded in 2016 by Peter Rujabuka who is still heavily involved in the business. And, through carefully constructed safari packages the tour business is raising the value of the country’s natural wealth in the hearts of everyone who visits.
“Often guides think on their feet and provide informative, engaging and enjoyable tours with what they are presented on the day,” Peter says, “Wildlife is unpredictable and cannot be controlled, so we focus our energy on taking care of everything else in the journey that can be. So that we can offer the sort of safari that our guests are expecting and deserve.”
“We want our guests to have the adventure of a lifetime,” Peter says, explaining that when embarking on a safari one should feel immersed into the wilderness. According to him, a good safari will bring a guest as close as possible to that wilderness without actually putting them in danger, “Safaris should engage all of your senses, ignite a sense of wonder and great humility in the heart and if possible, generate great surges of excitement.”
With this in mind, the usual safari starts with a pick up from the airport and a transfer to the accommodation. This is where the tour really begins because without having to worry about how they’re getting their luggage to their rooms, guests can enjoy the pleasant trip and a worryfree introduction to Uganda. Safaris usually last up to 7 days and itineraries are provided ahead of time so guests have a good idea of what they should expect. This also includes where they will be going, what they are likely to see and what they should bring.
THE TOURS To achieve these responses from the guest can be a tricky task he explains. Safaris show animals in their natural environment and most of them are constantly on the move, caring very little for the tour guides and their guests and the schedules they’re trying to keep.
Some of the highlights include the forested areas in Uganda at Kibale forest which is well known

to have the highest number of primate species in Africa. The Great Apes tours that Kibale Tours offer play a vital role in the education of the international community regarding the work being done to sustain their habitat. “Our tours are informative and as engaging and educational as they are enjoyable,” Peter says, “There is a natural attraction that we have with the Great Apes and people have an intrinsic interest in learning what they can about them.”
Then, there is the Queen Elizabeth National Park tours that guarantees to have guests marvelling at the huge variety of indigenous flora and fauna. And, afternoon game drives around the park and boat trips on the Kazinga Channel between Lakes George and Edward to see the large numbers of hippos.
OTHER TOURS The Gorilla Tours and the Crater Tours are some of the most popular available. Crater Lakes Adventures Uganda Gorilla and Wildlife Safaris offer glorious adventure holidays, community safaris and tours for wildlife related experiences in this natural environment.
The hippo tours are always popular. Many people do not appreciate until they actually see these gigantic animals, that they are the most feared and respected in Africa. Looking quite adorable and even cute while they float lazily around the water

until they open those incredible jaws which have had fisherman and would-be predators fleeing.
“Additionally, we are involving community activities that help encourage the sustainability and ecoconsciousness of our business.”
BUILDING A BUSINESS BASED ON PASSION
SOCIALS Social media has proved to be a valuable tool not just for the promotion of the business and the tour packages but also for the highlighting of important issues pertaining to industry sustainability. To handle this Peter has employed someone specifically to safeguard and steer the social media image of Kibale Tours across Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
Peter explains that building up a business such as his requires a passion for adventure and a dedication to conservation, “These are at the heart of what we do,” he says. It has taken him over three years to build the business to where it is now, at a point where he can share the joy of his home country to guests while also contributing back to the community. By sharing awareness and educating, changing opinions and opening eyes he can do his part to safeguard the future of what he sees as the natural wealth of the country.
“It is important that people talk about issues,” Peter says, “For the Ugandan tourist industry to continue to grow it needs to improve several aspects such as infrastructure, roads and health centers. These changes will only come about with people speaking openly about the importance of them and leveraging the audience available thanks to social media.”
ALL FOR THE CLIENTS With a range of explorers, couples, solitary travelers, volunteers and holiday seekers from the budget and mid-range vacationers through to luxury holidaymakers there is an importance to keep the tours as original and authentic as possible to show Uganda in the best light. So, to keep the standards of the safaris as high and as relevant as possible, each track and route is updated every six months with careful consideration to animal movement, ecology and sustainability. Relying on the carefully selected ten local staff members he works with Kibale Tours is entirely shaped around the clients. “We customize all our trips to suit the guests and we advise according to market changes,” he says,

Offering expertly designed luxury itineraries covering 16 countries and islands in Africa the business was dreamed up many years ago by Kenyan born Sandy Wood and officially established in 1992. It is the product of her own journey in travel as a guide, lodge manager, tour planner and finally founder of Pulse Africa.
EXPERIENCE The Pulse Africa travel specialists travel frequently into their areas of expertise. Sandy insists upon this because she believes that keeping up to date with the product and travel trends is vital to the success of their business.

abundance of things to see in Uganda. They are uniquely tailored and run over a number of days although some can be customized to suit the needs of the clients. Every year the safaris are updated to ensure that they meet the proper criteria of what the team want to offer. It’s about going the extra mile for the clients and the business partners with several community projects at Nyabuhama, Rwenjeru for Lake Mburo and Twin lakes communities in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Besides taking a client to several national parks, they also include communities in their packages and clients get to have a good time interacting with the locals of these areas. These visits are also important as for every visit to these communities, their company gives back 20% to the school and projects to enhance the standing of women in Uganda. With effect from January 2019, they have updated all their packages for Ugandan trips and included at least a day to be spent on community visit activities.
Rogers, who was born and raised in the country, was introduced to tourism at an early age. His home is a few miles from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park which is home to the mountain gorilla and as a boy he saw many travelers come to his community to see them. Herbert is a business administration graduate of Makerere University and has an unmatched passion for nature and wildlife photography. Believing that with a good lens he can transform his community by sharing the beauty of Uganda to the rest of the world he has traveled to every part of the country.
