Editors note
Glamping and safaris have many things in common and are two of the most searched travel items to date. They represent the fastest growing hospitality culture in the world and offer something new and exciting to outdoor experiences. Glamourous camping is all about making memories, sleeping and being treated like royalty with plush beds and awesome views while being immersed in the outdoors. It is the perfect way to have your cake and eat it. Safaris are about connecting with a world beyond the walls of our cities and seeing the sun set on a horizon entirely beyond us. Working closely with a host of glamping, safari and boutique accommodations as well as many suppliers to the industry we’ve produced the seventh in our Logbook. Focussing on a range of the top destinations to choose from, the people responsible for making them a reality and the suppliers responsible for supporting those dreams. And we have looked at what the businesses are doing in 2019 to capitalise on the year past and how they motivate and look after their staff.
It is going to be a big year for travel. Where are you going to be for it?

10. Unique Accommodation at a Former Gold Mining Site for a Getaway near Norton Sound, Alaska
FACILITIES At this glamping property, the approach to conserving the interiors involves a minimalist approach, using plain furnishings. Often the furniture has been built into the structure to maintain a continuity of form and function with the original building. Given the irregular surfaces, if freestanding furniture were introduced, it would be unstable and feel out of context. The objective was to make the minimum intervention to the interior, letting the cave interior express itself—so lights were hidden. Where needed, and with reference to the lives once lived in these caves, recycled materials are used to build furniture (cupboards, chairs, desks). The aim was that the simplicity of form, fusing with the structure, would not interrupt the dramatic setting of the Sassi. The changes aim to form a dialogue with the cityscape and its history.

ELISOMI TOURS Don’t build products, build relationships. The fully owned tour and safari company Elisomi Tours, which offers world class tours across Tanzania and East Africa has had a very busy 2018. We caught up with founder Elisa to discuss what is going to define this new year and how his company is going to lead the way in customer focus while providing their “African experience.”
a chance to help support the cultures and wildlife that thrive here.”
BUILDING ON RELATIONSHIPS “Representing Tanzania well and with the highest standard is one of the key elements we will use to create superior value for the company and our customers,” Elisa says, “In this direction we have diversified our products and have improved our customer care and services with the input of new training and technology.”
2019 will be mainly be defined by CRM, Elisa says, “Elisomi tours has planned to remarkably improve services and ensure more competitive prices to its customers.” He explains that with high quality service that meets and exceeds customer expectation as their priority, they are going to be applying discounts on many of their offers and opening this up to their established customers as well as new and potential ones. Having the highest standards has always been important to Elisa who took almost a year to build up his business at the start. This was because he was very particular regarding the administration, legality and logistics of his business. He wanted to lay the groundwork for the perfect safari trip for his clients who are mostly foreign travelers from the likes of USA and UK. Providing affordable tailored packages for their clients, Elisomi Tours specialize in identifying the key component that a client or group of clients, are looking for. Then they piece them together into a smoothly flowing well-orchestrated adventure holiday. Including game safaris, mountain climbing, beach holidays, cultural tours and volunteering packages. As part of their plans to achieve greater CRM this year Elisa has looked at all aspects of their business to see where developments can be made.
He adds that they have also integrated their customer service and supply chain, sales and marketing which has enabled them to achieve a greater efficiency and effectiveness in delivering customer value. “We have established a great relationship with our customers and partners,” he says, “But we wish to enhance this with them all. Too many businesses think that you prosper through developing a product, but it is really enhancing the relationships between your partners and your clients that counts. Build on those and you will improve everything.”
“We have made several decisions to increase our marketing and customers’ satisfaction in 2019,” he says, “We want to be among the leading companies in social and environmental responsibility. Which allows the client to know that not only are their safaris and tours an opportunity for them to see Tanzania in it’s great glory but also
22
Further to this, they have identified collaborators and partners in the UK and US and are negotiating the best terms of collaboration. Once completed, this is expected to greatly improve their marketing efficiency.
places in the world and is one of the largest marine protected areas. Elisa did not build his business to take away from the this, but to increase its value to a global audience. This is accomplished with an understanding of the importance of reducing the footprint left behind. And as was covered in our previous interview with Elisa, he strongly advocates sustainable living through a number of ways. These include minimizing the use of plastic bottles and ensuring that they support lodges and camps that serve organic foods and adhere to pro-environment behavior for their guests and their staff. The aim is to improve the economy, social context and biodiversity of the country. With this in mind, the company also dedicates a part of its earnings to environmental conservation within the local community. And, this year will also see the company taking even further strides for environmental best practices.
As a way of maintaining a long-term relationship with their customers, Elisa and his team have prepared and will continue to improve their data base, products and services. “Although not a problem for us, but something that can always improve, one of the key issues is speed of response,” Elisa says, identifying one of the biggest issues facing the very crowded industry of safari and tours, “We’ve implemented training and technology to improve the speed in which we can accomplish this and be even better prepared to respond to customer enquiries.”
TANZANIA ENVIRONMENT Tanzania is the best safari country in Africa. It borders Uganda and Kenya and is famous for its great open plains and abundant wild life. It is equally known for its cultural diversity with over 100 native languages being spoken in a country with a population of 56 million. It is probably best known for one of the dominating features of the African continent and the world at large. The unmissable, towering mountain Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, and the world’s largest terrestrial mammal migration in the Serengeti national park.
“We are considerate to our environment in each step we take,” Elisa says “Ranging from our direct products and services to those provided by third parties, care for the environment is one of our top priorities.”
Additionally, Tanzania contains the largest proportion of the Africa’s great lakes including Lake Victoria which is Africa’s largest lake and Lake Tanganyika which is the continent’s deepest. It also boasts the Kalambo water falls in the south west region of Rukwa and the Zanzibar Archipelago which has been voted one of the most beautiful
He adds that they are also partnering with environmental stewardship organizations like Planetwalk. It’s important to Elisa because he believes that the difference that can be made on the environment stems from how we treat each other as a people.
23
INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT
Elisa will be attending this show which deals specifically with not only those businesses involved in offering safaris and tours but also in the technological development of systems, programs and equipment to further enhance it.
As the Tanzanian safari industry relies on the wealth of natural beauty that the country provides, Elisa reckons that the value of safaris on a client by client basis is essential. Development cannot be allowed to be stalled simply because of a lack of momentum.
Safari is an industry dependent on the ingenuity and hard work of its businesses and Elisomi Tours is going to show us how to do it in 2019.
“The industry would benefit from a diversification of services and products, as this is the certain way to benefit customers, tourism business operators and local communities,” he says, “To do this safari and tour company owners should spend more time visiting exhibitions and shows such as Eye for Travel which is held in UK in 2019.”

EXCLUSIVE TENTS Keeping staff motivated After a very eventful 2018, Paul Zway spoke
“We tend to say yes,” Paul admits, “Even if we don’t know how to do it. It’s the sort of spirit that we install in our staff, that idea of stepping forward and saying yes and then finding out how to make it happen. How else do you learn and find out what you’re capable of?”
exclusively with The Lost Executive to tell us what his plans are for 2019 and the secret to keeping your staff motivated and excited for the future. Paul has a lot of history behind him. A genuine salt of the earth type who abhors bureaucracy, values his friends and family above all others and is the head of one of the premier and most respected safari tent manufacturers in the world.
Pushing the envelope to meet the client’s vision is a great way to stimulate the creative element of what Exclusive Tents does. As a business that thrives on creative input and a family environment this goes a long way to create excitement amongst the ranks.
After a 4 week break during which the factory closed from the 14th of December to the 14th January, this year is going to be Exclusive Tents’. Their current docket of projects includes some really unique designs, for some impressive tents.
“We spent a great deal of time in 2018 consolidating business deals and designing projects,” Paul says, “And this year we get to implement them and see it come into reality. Especially the range of tents that we’re producing that have become known as the tall tents. These structures may become a focus for our marketing as they are something that has not been done before.” (details on previous article.)
Tent designs are often taken for granted, but Paul and his business have a reputation for taking on projects that have never been tried before. Even with the score of accumulative years’ worth of structural, architectural and engineering experience that has shaped the company’s leaders, some of the projects that they agree to take on really push the boundaries of what is possible.
25
HOW TO MAINTAIN EXCITEMENT
As part of the partnership two companies are effectively moving into one manufacturing hub, allowing the construction, design and manufacturing sides of the business to meet each other. The growth of the business also means new machines are coming in, such as the latest cutting and welding machines for the new factory. And, more people will need to be brought in to manage the workload during the first quarter of 2019, to cover cad work, design and sales.
Previous to founding Exclusive Tents, Paul spent the better part of two decades working as a game ranger in the Kruger National Park, specializing in anti-poaching. In this environment it is important to keep the morale of your team as high as possible and maintain excitement to keep team members motivated to achieve targets and goals. Paul’s approach to this did not change when he started his own business and it remains the same to this day. Relying on the power of open communication and an open-door policy, the dozens of staff are kept abreast of new developments. This enabled Paul to generate excitement when his company partnered with Johan Maree and his manufacturing expertise and his business.
“At the same time, we need to produce projects for our clients and cannot allow any down time in production,” Paul says, “So it’s all going on at once, which is nothing new for us. It’s always ‘all go’ here and everyone just works well together because everyone knows where they stand.” RECOGNIZING TALENT
“Employees at all levels like to know where their business is going,” Paul explains, “It doesn’t make sense to me to keep the people you rely on to do a job in the dark.”
Allowing staff the freedom to grow in their roles and demonstrate skill sets has proven to be a useful tool and Paul has watched his company grow and expand with this.
He adds, “I don’t want anyone to ever feel that we’re just sitting here on this side of the earth, disconnected from each other. It is important that everyone in the business has a sense of unity and a family ethos. Uniting two businesses was a chance to unite two families in a way.”
“People work best when they know what their target is and how their work contributes,” Paul says, “And feel that they will be appreciated for increasing their own value to the business.” He adds that his company isn’t top heavy, and this allows them to be nimble, “We don’t have a corporate air, I prefer a casual working
Along with the new partnership came several new opportunities. Johan and his son Louwrie joined the business last year and Johan’s sonin-law followed at this beginning of this year. Paul explains that woodworking has been in his family for many years and now all of the wooden construction that Exclusive Tents needs which includes flooring, decking and supports will be handled by Louwrie’s segment. “It is very good to have Johan and Louwrie involved with us,” Paul says, “They both bring in tremendous value and experience together and individually.”
26
where there are a bit more public entities there and that attracts a lot of tyre-kickers which is a great environment for testing new ideas.”
relationship, I don’t like that “business corporate feel” because I want to have fun with my work.”
BUSIER THAN EVER Paul has been travelling around the world discussing projects with clients, helping them dream big and put ideas onto paper for him. This year is going to be an even busier time as the excitement for the recent developments in Exclusive Tents has overflowed into the client pool.
“It’s not only about exhibiting,” he adds, “In everything we do there is the human element. As long as a company remembers that side of things everything else falls into place.”
“People are wanting bigger and better,” Paul says gleefully, “And meeting with them is essential. For this I’m also attending the Glamping Show in the UK and the two Glamping Summits in USA. Then there is the Tiny House Jamboree in Texas

WILD-HART The Joy of Creating Something Special. South Devon glamping pod, cabin and playground suppliers.
Twenty-two years of designing and building playgrounds, cabins and home furniture for various contracts has served Wild Hart cofounder Nick Sneller very well. Working alongside his wife Colette Hudson, the pair officially entered the glamping market in 2016 and the interest and feedback for their business has been fantastic.
Specifically serving as a means of staving off boredom. This flies in the face of the glamping values of combining nature and the outdoors, where the aesthetic of a place is very important. With this in mind, Nick has called upon his furniture design background and his love of working with natural, local timbers.
Offering crossovers for glamping site owners looking to cater for families, Wild Hart create accommodation for guests such as pods and cabins and also the sorts of engaging playground areas that will keep children enthralled for hours. And probably make grown-ups green with envy.
“Wild Hart was set up to fully explore the idea of developing a company to create glamping accommodations,” he says, “But the value of a unique, bespoke play area for children expands the possibilities. Children need an area to play and families need a comfortable, luxurious place to stay.”
While many camping sites offer playgrounds for children, these are usually stand-alone areas that do not add much to the aesthetic of the place.
28
HOW DID IT BEGIN? Nick explains that his wife Collette has a flair for interior design and décor which he admits is not his strong suit. He is a trained cabinet maker, and throughout his career and due to his general enjoyment of working with timber, he developed strong affiliations with woodlands and woodlands management. “My furniture is nature orientated,” he explains, “I make use of the shapes of the timber and take a lot of inspiration from nature. In 2002 I set up a business making fine furniture and sculptural designs.”
“What is important is that it is exciting and safe,” he says. To this end all of Nick’s playgrounds adhere to the standard set by EN1176/77, which is a guideline to suggest how to minimize risks.
This business led to Nick making large sculptural furniture for schools and public parks and was one of the elements that led to his playground creations. A hands-on education option was given as a means to engage children and communities in building with timber and helping to create their new space.
“We install a playground and we get an independent officer to go and inspect it to confirm that we have done everything in our power to balance out that fun versus safety conundrum.”
GLAMPING ACCOMMODATION PRODUCTS
And, as glamping became ever increasingly popular and site owners were scrambling for new ways to differentiate themselves from their competition, Nick saw an opportunity to use his skills to create the classic pods which have made the glamping portion of his business very successful. Then, he is able to add value to each site with the options of certified playgrounds uniquely designed to fit with the location and making use of the natural area.
The Octa-Pod is the most popular seller at Wild Hart. A modular design of frame work and panels where the round pole framework is organic and natural. The paneling is insulated so can be used all year round and heated by AstecTherm. Nick explains that this design of paneling and natural framework creates an adaptable structure that maintains the element of bespokeness as no two timbers are identical.
“As a supplier into this industry it pays to be able to add extra value in areas that site owners may not have thought of,” he says.
With a main team including himself, his wife, a recently employed furniture maker and another four part time staff members, it takes roughly two months to design and create a custom Octa-Pod.
PLAYGROUNDS Glamping, as an industry is still finding its feet with regards to standardization and quality assurance. However, playgrounds by necessity need to stay within a certain standard of safety. Nick explains that his aim is to strike a balance between creativity and safety.
“It’s a quality product,” he explains, “Our clients are looking for something that is creative and original, yet adaptable and reliable. It takes time to do the job properly.”
According to him, playgrounds should not be themed but rather allowed to be environmentally dictated. Bespokely designed to suit what is available on site. His approach is to create something that is exciting and different, offering opportunities to climb, to crawl and jump and let the children’s imagination fill in the details while they play.
29
CREATIVITY
the project strongly determines the price range, keeping in mind that some clients are just looking for the bare essentials while others want full heating, insulation, plumbing and power.
Creativity is very important, Nick says, “There are certain parameters that have to be followed to make an accommodation or playground safe, but everything on top of that is down to imagination and ingenuity.”
“Bespokeness is what we do, and we never look at a set product,” Nick says “We think of ourselves as a service provider instead of product peddlers because even though our products such as the Hex-Pod and Octa-Pod are premanufactured you wouldn’t call them off the shelf.”
Site surveys are quite important in Nick’s line of work and he has visited a number of sites and worked very closely with clients to discuss design ideas. He admits that often, when a site visit is required it is because it’s due to specifically complex environments. “Glamping thrives on luxurious accommodation in unique locations,” Nick says, “So there are always interesting challenges that need to be overcome in some creative and ingenious manner.” One client, he recalls, had a steep hillside where he wanted a treehouse style cabin/pod built to take full advantage of an uninterrupted view. They had to create a structure to sit on the hill that would be completely secure. Hillsides are not famous for being considerate when being built upon and the client did not want them to landscape the entire area. Therefore, carefully shaping the structure to fit the hillside not only provided a stable structure for the pod but managed to not interfere with the natural beauty of the site.
Instead, the Hex-Pod and Octa-Pod are very adaptable. If one is purchased and it is not big enough, or it needs to be enlarged one of the panels can be removed and another pod bolted on to. Everything bolts and unbolts, from a flatpack unit and can be disassembled as quickly as its assembled.
“This isn’t an office-based job,” Nick says happily, “We go on site visits to understand the site and work with clients to manage expectations and aspirations and develop ideas. If I didn’t like challenges this wouldn’t be the job for me.” NOT OFF THE SHELF New clients and old can expect some exciting developments for this year as Nick and his team are creating products for new pods and fully functioning tree houses. Their products are manufactured in their workshop in East Devon and then they assemble them onsite for their clients. The complexity of

COLLABORATIONS
Nick reveals that he is strongly considering a lease programme for his pods for sites who may wish to try out different styles of accommodations before settling on one.
Nick, who uses one of his own pods as an office, knows the value of research and is very selective on which companies he partners his business with. This is why he has chosen companies like Devon based AstecTherm and NuVision, which he has collaborated with on multiple occasions.
“2019 is going to be an exciting year for us,” Nick says, “And for glamping in general.”
“Your supplier’s standards become your own in the end,” he explains.

BLOSSOM BELL TENT HIRE The Bell Tent supplier that blossomed out of Scotland
Whatever your special day entails be it a wedding, birthday, corporate event or festival you want to work with a supplier who can appreciate the importance of the day. One who can not only supply you with a product or service, but also a memorable experience.
explains that this year is going to be a time of innovation and growth, a genuine opportunity for the business to blossom. “We’re developing our product offering and are currently converting a vintage horsebox to a highly unique outdoor/indoor photo booth,” he says, “Also, we are expanding our coverage area. Previously we’ve covered Southern Scotland and North East England but are now expanding to cover the whole of the UK. We feel confident about this as we have already proven that we can cover all of the country and offer the same high standards to our clients, both new and current.”
Blossom Bell Tent Hire, based out of The Scottish Borders, provides bell tents for all occasions. Including weddings, festivals, glamping and corporate events. As well as alternative marquees and soon-to-be-available unique outdoor photobooth hire. Speaking with owner and co-founder Craig Hooper, he explains that his business takes care of everything from the initial enquiry and liaising with venues, to erecting, furnishing and finally the removal of the tents. This all-in-one service allows clients to completely focus on the important things of the day, knowing that their location and venue is sorted.
PIVOTING Anyone who has set up a tent will agree that it’s important to know which direction the wind is blowing. Blossom Bell Tent Hire is proof that the same can be said for business. According to Craig their business has changed immensely since their first days, pivoting whenever necessary to find that groove that worked best for their customers.
Over the last two years, the company has evolved steadily from being part-time with a pair of tents, to a full-time business with thirty tents in stock and a large number on order for 2019. Craig

but after doing some research they found that they could buy new stock for a similar price. Combining this with his marketing background they decided to build their own business from scratch. “We wanted a certain lifestyle,” he says, “One that allowed us time to spend with our family, that wasn’t too stressful and gave us the chance to get outdoors and travel more. As a family we love the outdoors, and this gave us the perfect chance to go glamping or camping whenever we got a break.”
“My wife Kelly and I began the business,” he says, “Our initial concept was to work on it in a part time basis with a handful of tents, offering children’s parties and sleepovers. It would be residual income while we concentrated on our event management business.”
Building it up from scratch also meant that they were able to set their business parameters and determine their approach to dealing with customers and their special days.
However, as he explains, things took a different route.
WHAT CAN A CLIENT EXPECT? In a short period of time Blossom Bell Tent Hire has established itself, through the hard work of Craig and Kelly, as the exclusive tent supplier for a Wedderburn Castle and Barns, a highly prestigious and very popular wedding venue in the Scottish Borders.
“It became apparent, almost immediately, that this would not be the case. Almost as soon as we started marketing the tents, we had a phenomenal response with a flood of bookings for weddings, festivals and corporate events, as well as large garden parties.” It was a chance for the couple to take inventory and an honest look at the situation. Event management required long hours of work and had begun having a negative effect on their home and family life. Finding this quite unacceptable they decided to concentrate their energy and marketing budget on Blossom Bell Tent Hire. This included building stock levels to cover larger bookings and developing strategies to offer ever better products and services to their fast-growing clientele.
“We also have strong links with a number of campsites in the area, allowing us to offer glamping breaks in places where appropriate facilities aren’t on offer,” Craig says. KNOWING WHAT IS IMPORTANT
This allows them to offer a service to their guests that would like to have the glamping experience but are very specific with the area where they want to offer it.
At the start, the couple were offered the chance to purchase a small bell tent hire business that was already offering children’s parties and sleepovers,
34
Safety
He adds, “We also work hard to establish and maintain good relationships with festival organisers as not only is this an important revenue stream for us, but we and our staff all love live music.”
One of the biggest challenges was insurance, Craig reveals. But this was also an opportunity. There are a lot of insurance brokers who offer PLI cover for marquees and other types of temporary structures, but for their own peace of mind, they wanted something that specified bell tents. This required research which has made them experts in this field.
FUTUREPROOFING As with any business, especially one that is growing so fast off the backs of its co-founders, there is a long list of important things to address to keep their business safe for the future. But three things stand out. Trends. Product and Safety.
“Specific insurance also means you naturally amplify any safety precautions and efforts you have already administered,” Craig says, “It makes us even better with what we do because guest safety is always at the forefront of our minds.”
Trends As clients, new and present, have evolving tastes, Craig and Kelly ensure that they keep their fingers on the pulse of the latest trends with camping and weddings. This is time invested, with research through newsletters, magazines, blogs and social media. Avid users of social media they can be easily found on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
LIFESTYLE How does the Hooper family balance life and work? “In a word, camping,” Craig testifies, “Whenever we have a large booking away from home, we almost always pack an extra tent, take our 3 boys with us and pitch up close by. This means we can have a break and give our clients peace of mind, knowing we are only a matter of minutes away should they need us.”
“Social media is something that we are constantly experimenting with,” Craig says, “Using social media in the right way is an excellent approach. Planning timings of posts to optimise exposure and making use of the various groups and pages on social media where we are likely to find our target audience works well. We have also done all of our own SEO, which now places us consistently on the first page of Google when you search for our services in the areas we cover. Knowing how to use digital tools to futureproof your business is very effective.”
Beyond camping, they are also film buffs and love eating out, as well as squeezing in as many barbecues as possible in the summer. Being based in a very rural area also gives them the chance to do a lot of walking as well as encouraging them to be increasingly adventurous. “We have started to explore off the beaten track much more,” Craig explains, “Living in Scotland is great as we have the option of wild camping. As long as you’re considerate about it there are very few places you can’t pitch a tent and there are some absolutely stunning spots.”
Product And offline futureproofing is equally well looked after, he explains, “We continually update and upgrade our stock. Any tents that are starting to look worn, dated or damaged are replaced as soon as possible and we are always on the lookout for something new to add to our line-up.”
PRICE: (generally) £200 - £300 per weekend booking
For example, they have previously only offered 5 metre tents but due to demand they now cater to all sizes from a tiny 1.5 metre “Baby Bell”, which makes a great play tent at wedding bookings, all the way up to their “Behemoth Bell”. At 8 metres in diameter, this is the largest bell tent available in the UK, offering sleeping accommodation for 10 guests, and also makes an alternative to a small marquee for more intimate gatherings.

MOBILE SOLAR CHARGERS LTD Mobile Solar Chargers Ltd was founded in April 2012 after the founder, Tim Smerdon and his family crossed the Sahara Desert in an old Peugeot. During this time, which also saw Tim setting up a Fairtrade business with the Women’s Groups in Uganda, he saw the need for reliable power sources that were off grid. “A little bit of power goes a long way,” he explains, “Especially when business and education are involved. The infrastructure in some of these locations is not great but they still require power.” He explains, “Our Expedition packages have improved the safety and connectivity of climbers during multiple trips to Everest and in 2018 three different teams used them.”
AN ESSENTIAL TOOL The Mobile Solar Charger is a fit for purpose portable power charger suitable for all scenarios, whether it is for back up or full out-country travel. While this is an ideal tool for any traveler whether you’re an executive or a backpacker, Tim has had the chance to test them against the most incredible environments.
Some of the other expeditions that have been powered by Mobile Solar Chargers Ltd include some of the most hostile places including, ExIcemaiden, Expedition 5, Challenge Antarctica, 65Degrees North and Uphill Battle. “After the Nepalese Earthquake, we also designed the ‘Solar Charging Can’ to give immediate power such as SatComms and medical lighting in disaster and refugee camp scenarios,” he reveals, “We hope we can use them to reduce the loss of life that these natural disasters cause, not only during but afterwards when people are left stranded.”

PROP-SYNC Straight forward property management/synchronisation Many short-let property owners would agree that their businesses rely on their properties being occupied. Be it bed and breakfasts, glamping lodges, boutique hotels or properties on AirBNB if a room is unoccupied it is losing revenue.
This is why PROP-SYNC, founded by businessman Nick West, was created to compare property bookings and availability on a number of calendars across multiple OTA’s and PMS’s. Then to sync these and reduce double bookings. Users can then manage their units from one place in the PROPSYNC admin panel and this enables property owners to know, at any time, which rooms are occupied and for how long.
THE CHALLENGE An average short-let property owner will feature their property on half a dozen travel websites and travel agencies online. Each one having their own requirements for inputting calendar bookings and updating dates of availability. All-in-all this equals hundreds of hours spent each year putting in these details manually.
WHAT IS IT PROP-SYNC is an automatically updating platform designed for short-let property owners who make use of multiple websites for their guests/occupants. It includes real time calendar availability across multiple channels which means no more manual updates on online bookings and no more time-consuming data duplications and duplicated bookings. Things are kept up to date and straight forward.
If there is no time available to do this, rooms and properties can be vulnerable to double bookings. And even if a person is employed to do this regularly, there is no guarantee against human error and this can be expensive and frustrating.
WHAT TO EXPECT PROP-SYNC is designed for people who are not in the IT industry, so it is very user friendly. Regardless, there is always someone on hand should there be any enquiries or questions. Heralding from the IT industry, Nick believes in the importance of communication with customers and answering questions and solving any issues as soon as possible. Valerie Woods, a user since April 2017 said this regarding PROP-SYNC’s customer service:
“They make the process more understandable and dealt with my concerns professionally. If they couldn’t respond immediately, they would always keep me updated and
40
I knew what was going on. I really liked that because I was more at ease and when using something new, it’s always a daunting time but they really made me feel confident.” THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND • PROP-SYNC calendars are reconciled nightly (i.e. every business day) for peace of mind. • You get a 3-month free trial to see if it works for you • This service is available internationally. PRICE: Fixed monthly fee of £5+VAT per property, £1.50 + VAT per room/unit TELEPHONE: 0044 207 1176110 WEBSITE: www.prop-sync.com EMAIL: enquiries@prop-sync.com

ASTECTHERM Indoor heating. Finally, an energy efficient solution SUMMARY
ASTECTHERM
Recently exhibiting at The Glamping Show, ASTECtherm demonstrated conclusively that indoor heating has really been taken up a notch. In Europe and especially in the UK, glamping sites may or may not be able to open during the winter due to their heating. Traditional indoor heating can prove to be too costly to install, and in some cases too hazardous as well. It is within this niche that ASTECtherm has set itself.
So how does it work? Martin explains that it was originally designed as a low-energy solution for heating houses. The revolutionary infrared radiant heating system runs on extra-low voltage electrical current, making it very economical and safe to use. Once installed, ASTECtherm heating systems are concealed within the fabric of the building allowing for greater wall space and a premium quality interior finish. ASTECtherm heating films can be installed underfloor or plastered into the ceiling or walls, depending on your requirements.
Head of Operations Martin Weaver says, “ASTECtherm is the ideal heating system to provide year-round heating. Because it’s very energy and space efficient it’s perfect for glamping pods and garden rooms.”
“ASTECtherm works by emitting FAR-infrared which directly heats the people and surfaces within the room,” Martin reveals, “While most conventional heating systems heat the air. This isn’t an efficient way of heating as it creates a lot of wasted heat which directly impacts the wallet.”
THE BENEFITS Efficiency, this is a low-energy radiant heating system that uses infrared technology to directly heat up people and objects instead of the air, the heating material is a patented nanofiber fleece which is highly efficient at transferring electricity directly into heat. This means less money spent on running costs. Space and safety, it’s unobtrusive and easily concealed and operates at a low surface temperature. It also creates minimal movement of allergens in the air and reduces condensation and mildew. Convenience, low maintenance. Unlike conventional heating which can become unreliable if overused, ASTECtherm is low maintenance. CAMP KIOSK Convenient, management software Less paperwork is always good. Decreasing paperwork increases efficiency which ultimately improves work flow and offers more time to enjoy what you do. Perfect for busy camping, glamping and boutique accommodations and sites.
trial to see if it works for you. Camp Kiosk offer a number of benefits that you just don’t get with the older systems. Such as secure campground data in the cloud which means you won’t lose your important information and can get access to it from any browser. Also, to keep things fresh with current and new guests and campers you can create unique booking packages and increase the accuracy of fees and billable items.
Many camping sites are using redundant methods to maintain their books. This means more errors and more time ill-spent in the offices and less time invested in developing camping grounds, exploring new ideas and interacting with guests. Furthermore, the standards of office management are higher than ever with the rise of glamping and luxury camping bringing in an entirely new section of regular campers seeking to enjoy the great outdoors.
2019 Camp Kiosk is a useful tool that supports discerning campground and glampsite owners looking to book in guests months in advance or last-minute. The vision of Camp Kiosk is to help manage this process by turning it into a collaborative effort where guests can fill out the forms themselves. And things are only going to develop further in 2019. The upcoming year is all about interacting with new users to prompt the new developments that will make the biggest changes and the greatest strides for the industry.

REDCLIFF ZAMBEZI LODGE MPATA GORGE Mpata Gorge in eastern Zambia is an amazing if relatively unknown part of the world. Carved out of the land by the Zambezi River, it is a superb location for water activities and offers the infamous tigerfish as a tantalizing lure for any fans of sport and fly fishing. Redcliff Zambezi Lodge was founded by Nic van Huyssteen in 1996. South African with a background in farming and a love of fly fishing, he now works with over ten locally employed staff members and together they provide river safaris up the Zambezi, game treks and bird watching to a host of year-round guests. Visitors from around the world, looking to experience the contrasting elements that are offered in this region, come to Nic to benefit from his expertise in getting the most out of this area.
vundu to name a few. There are over 30 species in all and reportedly some of the best catches have been made right off the jetty below the lodge itself. Fly-fishing for the Zambezi tigerfish, a 7 kg fish that thrives in these warm waters has become an increasingly popular activity.
“We are the only commercial lodge for over 50km, and the remoteness of the lodge is its appeal,” Nic says, “You can be here for days without seeing another boat. Also, as aside from Mpata Gorge, the remaining area is flat, open flood plains there is a diverse amount of wildlife to see. Then there is also the fishing!”
THE LODGES There are four double chalets and two family sized chalets on site, built from local stone and roofed with tents in a distinguished bush-camp style. Each chalet is designed to blend with the natural aesthetic of the surrounding bush which brings to mind rugged, outdoorsy accommodation. In contrast, the interiors, beds and bathrooms are top of the line and promise fantastic comfort. The terraces overlook the Zambezi river and are perfect for an evening rest or a morning coffee.

EDEN LEISURE VILLAGE Calm, beautiful and relaxing. This is what people travel to Scotland to find. Husband and wife, Des and Janet Gracey founded Eden Leisure Village in August 2014. Their two girls and son are also involved in the business which according to Janet may not have taken off if not for one inquisitive cow who went wandering away from the herd. “Des was a farmer at the time and lost some cattle,” she says, “He went looking and found them on the site where Eden Leisure Village is situated and realized what a nice setting it was.” Back then the piece of land was rough and no good for farming, but he suggested to Janet that she take the dog for a walk and have a look. She obliged him and agreed that it was a beautiful spot. That was when he told her what he had been thinking of. That it would be a perfect place for a glamping site. Now, six staff members are employed at this beautiful secluded location that you wouldn’t believe is just 20 minutes from Glasgow city centre. The village has 10 country style, rustic accommodations which blend wonderfully with the surrounding land which, while remote, is easily accessible to all the other major Central Scotland cities, Stirling, Edinburgh, Dundee and Perth.

CANTO DAS FONTES Pioneering Glamping Project in Madeira THE TIPIS
The pioneering glamping project in Madeira Island Canto das Fontes officially opened in June 2015. The dreamchild of founder Roberto Varela from Ponta do Sol, the site boasts stunning ocean views and is 100 meters above the beach of Anjos, a small village between Ponta do Sol and Madalena do Mar in Portugal.
The site is deliberately uncomplicated and has only two tipis for the moment. According to Roberto this allows the guest to feel completely at peace and fully relaxed in an exclusive space. Listening to the waterfall inside the property and the waves down at the beach. By design it is as sublime as it is picturesque, appealing to guests wishing to enjoy views uncommon to most people’s lives.
The site includes a pair of cosy tipi tents located on a 3300 square metre plot of land where they have a permaculture design and a certified organic farming project. Banana trees surround the location which is set upon a cliff looking over the sea.
As a small villa with an organic farm, the meals here are DIY. According to the season and depending on what is available in the field it is possible for the guest to pick their own fruits and vegetables from the farm. There is a lot to do at Canto das Fontes, including scenic drives, walking, scuba diving, paragliding, fishing, swimming windsurfing normal surfing and dolphin and whale watching.
“My idea, is for a guest to wake up inside a tropical forest with all the fruits, plants and flowers they can imagine,” Roberto explains, “Then to breathe the fresh, pure Atlantic air and enjoy the subtropical climate of Madeira while enjoying the comfortable simplicity of life here.”
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND Due to the location there is no access for wheelchairs and while smoking is permitted guests are requested to be careful what they throw around. Everyone is trusted to respect and leave the natural beauty of Canto das Fontes unspoilt.

ENGAGI SAFARIS The Gorilla Safari Offering safaris in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania and the DRC, Engagi Safaris is an African based tour agency with over a decade experience of working in the East African tourism industry. Highly experienced, insightful and affordable they offer all international and national visitors the chance to see Africa at its best.
While gorillas and the great apes may be the mainstay of their service, Uganda and Rwanda offer so much more in terms of nature and wildlife. Uganda, as an example has a network of over 10 national parks that include vast savanna plains and forests that are home to lions, elephants, antelopes, giraffes, leopards and buffaloes to name but a few. The lakes and rivers that include the Nile, are natural habitats for hippos, crocodiles and other wild animals. And the bird species, drawn here by the vegetation alongside the Nile and the natural abundance of wildlife, are a treat for any ornithologist.
Engagi means gorilla in the Southwestern Ugandan language of Chiga, and the nearby Virunga Mountains and the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park provide the only natural habitat for this beautiful and very private mountain gorilla. This forms one of the major tourist attractions in the region.
SEEING GORILLAS AND MORE Engagi Safaris provide more than just a tour, they provide an experience. For over ten years they’ve offered the most knowledgeable, engaging and unobtrusive gorilla tours in the tropical rainforests of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. They have also been instrumental in raising awareness and appreciation for the thirteen different primate species found within these regions. These include chimpanzees, baboons, colobus, pottos, galagos and many different kinds of monkeys.

WHAT MAKES ENGAGI SAFARIS DIFFERENT Unlike the animals found on the savannah, Mountain Gorillas form close family ties and are private animals that need to be approached carefully. Engagi Safaris bring over ten years of experience to bringing people as close to our great cousins as possible without interfering or disrupting their lives. At the same time, they manage the balance between human safety and ape safety. All of the guides are well trained and knowledgeable and share in the passion for seeing all wild animals and a real love for nature. Also, the business is one of the most professional, understanding that clients, potential, new and current, all have busy lives and need to have enquiries answered fast, bookings made efficiently, and transfers managed smoothly without disruption. Combining the immense personal experiences and knowledge of the guides, New African Territories aims to offer a personal touch while being 100% authentic.
Our portfolio consists of small and intimate camps and lodges, with 13 rooms or less to keep the feeling of being out in the wild alive. Each property offers stunning, excellent game viewing in unique locations and provide authentic cultural experiences be it local food, music or stories. Safari was born in East Africa , and we do it well. With all of our properties, “Our focus is slow travel and maximum flexibility for each and every guest,” Tamsin explains, “A disconnection from the fastpaced lifestyle that most of our guests come from. An opportunity to enjoy Africa at its own rhythm. We do not follow a contrived “schedule” but flow with the day’s adventure and where it takes you.
Founder Tamsin explains their aim, “because of our years of experience and in depth knowledge in all things East African , we are able to advise and curate unique and special journeys which offer small, owner managed ,intimate properties, combined with the best safari activities with experienced guides . The safari adventures that we offer immerse the guests into the very depths of Africa, New African Territories celebrates east Africa’s rich and diverse people, the incredible wildlife, stunning scenery and the general spirit of this land..”
