Editors note

The biggest thing to happen to hospitality in recent years is glamping. Bridging the gaps between camping, safari and hotels it has become the fastest growing hospitality culture in the world and offers something new and exciting to outdoor experiences. Glamourous camping is all about making memories, being treated like royalty with plush beds and awesome views while being immersed in the outdoors. It is the perfect way to have your cake and eat it. Safari lodges were offering glamping accommodations for many years and their influence can be strongly seen in the number of glamping establishments looking at tented and mobile structures for their guests. This is one of the reasons why glamping, safari tours, water tours and boutique accommodation work so well together. Working closely with a host of glamping, safari and boutique accommodations as well as the leading suppliers to the industry we’ve produced a grand exhibit of who to visit and who to work with. We have focussed on a range of the top destinations to choose from, the people responsible for making them a reality and the suppliers responsible for supporting those dreams.

BUSHTEC SAFARI “Magnifi-tent” Manufacturers of Glamping and Safari Luxury Tent Camps

Having manufactured luxury tents for the celebrities and royalty, and with regular clients from high-end destinations including resort development investors, safari lodge owners and tour operators, it is safe to say that Bushtec Safari does not simply make tents.

to showcase the ingenuity and innovation that characterized the product,” he says.

STRESS TESTED Unlike many suppliers to the safari and glamping industries, Canvas and Tent was actually catering to a completely different market before they found another use for their product. After decades of providing tented products to various militaries and Defense Forces across the globe, Canvas and Tent really found their niche in the tourism market.

Bushtec Safari is the official luxury brand of the Canvas and Tent Group, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of canvas products and a name that is synonymous with style, high quality and reliability. Louw Bekker, Chief Executive Officer of the Canvas and Tent Group, took some time out of his schedule to share what has made this business the great entity that it is today.

“The African market at the time lacked a competitive network of canvas manufacturers who could service the popular safari game lodges and resorts with accommodation tents,” Louw explains.

“It is a business that began with a vision,” he explains, adding that Canvas and Tent was originally founded by a young couple in the late 60s, “They later sold it to a group of investors and over the next three decades, the tiny company with their great reputation was developed into a global leader in providing canvas products.” According to Louw, in 1968 the company was mainly providing canvas tarpaulins for South Africa’s burgeoning railway industry. However, the singular quality of their canvas caught the attention of the South African Defense Force, which has since been one of their longest lasting clients. “This was the beginning of Canvas and Tent spreading across the African landscape

THE RISE OF THE BUSHTEC TURNKEY SOLUTIONS Glamping in general has no borders because it runs almost entirely on the imagination of people. As such it has changed the accommodation market in two specific ways. Firstly, it became advisable for established companies on either end of the hospitality industry with camping on one side, and hotels and resorts on the other, to offer new and innovative styles of hospitality. Secondly, it gave complete newcomers the opportunity to work outside the box and offer something unique and treasured. While Bushtec Safari’s initial focus was purely on manufacturing and installation, Bushtec Creations expanded the current service offered to provide full turnkey solutions for clients that would meet both of these new markets. This enabled them to make full use of their expertise and workforce to provide complete camp planning and concept design services, as well as qualified site inspections and thorough project management for clients. “This means that in addition to construction and installation, we also do full electrical reticulation and water treatment,” Louw says, “As well as backof-house solutions such as staff accommodation, kitchens, laundry and storage. If the devil is in the detail, then we know all the fine print.”

“Also, considering that our company’s product had been stress-tested in the most extreme circumstances for many years, there was nothing that the tourism industry could throw at us that we hadn’t seen before. So, using what was already a very high-quality product the company began manufacturing and installing luxury tented units and quickly becoming a market leader in this arena. It is easier to add style to a reliable product than adding reliability to a stylish one.”

THE VALUE OF VALUED RELATIONSHIPS Louw says that some of the investors who are now directors and senior management had long standing business relationships from decades of previous ventures. It is their relationships which have made them more family than business partners, and allowed them to steer the company to where it is now.

THE GLAMPING EXPLOSION While the business has existed for several decades Louw tells us that its true success has been over the last ten years. Specifically, as the glamping industry has matured from an innovative idea to a multi-million-dollar industry which has been the biggest and most influential development to hospitality ever. “Importantly,” he says, “This quickly increased the number of competitors in the market which encouraged us to find modern, neoteric ways to remain ahead of the curve. This is after all very important for any business with a long-standing reputation because you can’t allow yourself to become too set in your ways. This is why Bushtec Safari and Bushtec Creations had to exist.”

11

When construction was completed in early 2018, Kingfisher lodge boasted an opulent array of structures. Among these are twenty luxury accommodation units, five for families and fifteen for couples and single guests. These tented chalets include bedrooms, bathrooms, living areas and patios, as well as their own private swimming pools. The lodge also boasts a spa, conference facilities, prayer rooms and an outdoor entertainment deck. “We work with a range of clients from large international companies to smaller groups including humanitarian organizations, mining houses, aviation companies, and outdoor enthusiasts,” Louw says, “Our products are applicable to everyone and our services fit all projects.”

“Our business is incredibly reliant on building good relationships. Frans Vermaas and Dave Court, who head Bushtec Safari and Bushtec Creations respectively, were in the Safari Lodge business for years before joining Canvas and Tent,” Louw says, “Their connections with hundreds of lodge owners and industry professionals has allowed us to build a close-knit network of clients who trust the brand enough to have worked with us year after year.” “Further to that,” he adds, “Some of our earliest clients’ children have now come to be our clients too. Some of these relationships with resort owners span over 30 years, and we’ve constantly been the port of call for all resort upgrades and maintenance.”

BUSHTEC SAFARI SERVICES With a reputation of unyielding reliability and prestigious design, Bushtec Safari and Bushtec Creations have some truly incredible projects under their belts. They’ve worked with government, royalty and global conservationist organisations, but it is one of their latest that is most noteworthy.

PRODUCTS The best product at Bushtec Safari is definitely their luxury tents! They’re manufactured from military-grade Ripstop canvas to ensure the highest possible quality for temporary and semipermanent structures. The tents boast a myriad of unique selling points, including being water resistant, rot proof and fire-retardant.

“We are especially proud to announce the opening of our Magnum Opus, the luxury ecoresort Kingfisher Lodge, in the UAE,” Louw says.

With adequate maintenance, which they do

This tented lodge was commissioned by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (SHUROOQ) and constructed exclusively by Bushtec’s team of multi-disciplinary experts. At the end of 2018, the eco-lodge won the award for Hotel Launch of the Year at the Middle East Hospitality Awards.

it is vital that they study the market to understand how client bases have expanded and how client needs have evolved.

provide, the tents can retain their tensile strength and colour for over ten years. In fact, there are tents that have stood at prominent lodges in a variety of climates for over twenty years, surviving everything from heavy rains, to extreme temperatures and wind storms.

As such, they attend a variety of international travel and tourism shows, including Africa’s Annual Travel Indaba, The Glamping Show in the UK and Sun Rimini Outdoor and Lifestyle Show in Italy.

THE CUTTING EDGE

“Exhibiting at these shows has allowed us to realize how unique our product is,” Louw explains, “And how starkly it differs from some of the standard renditions of glamping tents across the globe. The research done on these tours has allowed us to sharpen our strongest tools and improve on old and new technologies to ensure that we retain market share and futureproof ourselves.”

According to Louw, their industry has never been more competitive or fast-paced. As such, one of their most vigorous marketing activities is market research, for which they employ the most highlyskilled and vastly-experienced team of innovators. He reveals that glamping has boomed in a way they never expected over the past year, and that

13

WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS

“We also boast a sophisticated design department which has won the company several design awards, including the Platinum Award at Africa’s Annual Travel Indaba,” Louw says.

Their factory in Ladysmith South Africa is an innovation hub of note, Louw says, adding that once the research is done by the marketing maestros, the magic is created by what he calls their technical savants. The factory is 22,000m² and houses a host of technological wonders. The first of these is the Eaton System, which is an overhead production line system and power management solution that makes electrical, hydraulic and mechanical power operate more efficiently, safely and sustainably. This has been an enormous contributing factor in their ability to maximize productivity and output.

OTHER ENTITIES To ensure that their global reach does not come at the cost of any of their quality or reliability, several other business components have been established as separate entities to ensure a focused approach for clients. Canvas and Tent USA has been trading from an Atlanta-based office since 2016, divided into Bushtec Adventure USA for outdoor gear, and Bushtec Safari USA for the glamping and luxury safari markets. Other such entities include two businesses in Africa, Tents Direct in South Africa and Kalahari Kanvas in Botswana which provide outdoor gear supplies. And, two businesses internationally providing luxury tents and glamping camp solutions, Canvas and Tent Europe in Belgium and Canvas and Tent Australia which services Oceania and Asian clients.

The factory is also home to a state-of-the-art laboratory, where they research innovative and improved methods for curing, treating, laminating and strengthening canvas. The 6000m² steel factory has a similar task, ensuring the absolute structural integrity of the metal components intended to keep the tents standing for years. Here, new innovations such as powder coating have been perfected and implemented.

STAFF. THE BLOOD OF THE BUSINESS

They are also expanding in Europe through their Belgium satellite office, and already servicing several clients across the European landscape

In total the group and related campuses employ approximately 600 permanent staff members composed of the top caliber of minds. They include academically and professionally trained engineers, architects and designers who participate in continuous professional development programmes to stay up to date with industry changes.

“There are a number of various exciting projects,” Louw says, “In a great variety of scope and scale like a huge investment from a popular zoo and the completion of the biggest canvas product showroom in Africa at our Pretoria headquarters. There is always so much happening with us, you have to keep your eyes open all the time.”

“Our business is heavily reliant on artisans, who are trained and have certification in various trades including electrical reticulation, welding, plumbing and tailoring,” Louw says, “Our sales and marketing teams also participate in soft-skills training courses and one-on-one coaching sessions to guide them towards their peak professional potential.”

MANDRARE RIVER CAMP Riverside Luxury tented accommodation in the heart of Madagascar

In 2007, Mandrare River Camp welcomed its first guests to the luxury tented camp set upon the banks of the Mandrare River in Madagascar. One of the first locations of the spectacular Madagascar Classic Collection founded by Edward Tucker Brown, it was built in an effort to bring something unique to one of the last unexplored regions of the world. Something unique and gorgeous.

tranquil waters while offering complete privacy to guests. Far removed from the usual hustle and bustle that can be found in luxury resorts, the seclusion of the camp is something to behold and offers a perfect opportunity to recharge and relax. For adventurers, there is also access to the spiny forest which is not only home to an abundance of wildlife unique to the island but also the fascinating Antandroy tribe that co-habit this otherworldly landscape.

As such, Mandrare River Camp provides luxurious tented accommodation in an environment characterised by thick jungle, clear rivers and authentic fishing villages. It also provides an important function in the local community where 90% of the staff are recruited locally with everyone receiving training to take on future management positions.

THE LOCATION Mandrare River Camp has six en suite tents that are generously spread out beneath the shade of tamarind trees. Each one benefits from breathtaking views of the sacred mountains across the

ACCOMMODATION The six tents are fully en suite with a private terrace overlooking the river and during the year the whole camp is regularly upgraded to ensure a fresh and sophisticated feel. Such as, in 2012 the thatched river terrace was added with a swimming pool for guests to cool off in during the warmer days. MANAFIAFY BEACH AND RAINFOREST LODGE Intimate and Surrounded by the Real Madagascar

2007 and Manafiafy Beach and Rainforest Lodge followed in 2010.

In 2010, Madagascar Classic Collection opened Manafiafy Beach and Rainforest Lodge in order to widen their already unique product offering. This formed part of a plan to ensure that Southern Madagascar became an area of the country with accommodation worthy of its ‘must see’ status.

What distinguishes Manafiafy Beach and Rainforest Lodge is that it is in an area of spectacular beauty, off the beaten track and set in the centre of the local fishing community. Here guests are surrounded by nature in its rawest form with distant mountains, lush rainforests, white sandy beaches and lapping waters of the Indian Ocean all at their doorstep.

Edward Tucker Brown is the founder of Madagascar Classic Collection. After working in London for six years for two sizeable safari companies based in East Africa, he decided it was time to explore tourism in a less tourist-filled area.

ACCOMMODATION

Attracted to Madagascar for many reasons, one of which was simply because he knew nobody who had ever been there. He fell in love with the place, however felt that what was missing was the East African style of tented camping which is characterised by being right out in the bush and off the few standard tourist routes. The first of his collection, Mandrare River Camp opened in

COMMUNITY PROJECTS There are a number of social/community projects which guests are actively encouraged to visit as they create a full well-rounded impression of the area. The Madagascar Classic Collection have built schools and classrooms, provided electricity for health centres and maternity clinics, as well as providing ongoing help with educational supplies such as school satchels, pens and exercise books. The decoration places particular emphasis on incorporating the original character of the region into the design and always offering guests the greatest possible comfort. The private wooden terrace overlooking the sea offers an absolute beach paradise feeling while providing complete privacy from other guests.

STAFF There are thirty-one staff at Manafiafy Beach and Rainforest Lodge and twenty-three in their office in Antananarivo.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

Over 90% of their employees are Madagascan and they attach great importance to training and development. This is to give them the opportunity to take up management positions in their company instead of hiring foreign employees.

Madagascar is still one of the most remote and extraordinary destinations in the world. LIGHTS ON AFRICA DESTINATIONS AND SAFARIS Keeping the Light On In Deepest Darkest Africa It may have taken six years to build Lights on Africa Destinations and Safaris to the enterprise that it is now, but for managing director and owner Peniel Vello Laizer it represents something greater than merely a touring business. Coming from an underprivileged background his business has put him in a position to help keep local children in school.

experiences, he launched a business that revolved around his status as one of the best tour planners in the country. “My childhood was many things, including an adventure,” he says, “I witnessed many things in Tanzania that can only be experienced when properly guided. I count myself fortunate because my business has grown around me being able to lead others to witness these unique scenes of wildlife.”

“Northern Tanzania, where I am from,” he says, “Is known as the crown jewel of tourism in the country. It provides a bountiful collection of the country’s most desired tourist attractions and by keeping children in school and properly educating them, it will safeguard and develop ways to protect our most important natural heritage.”

With an extensive network within the travel industry his business has crossed the borders into neighboring Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and South Africa where he is able to arrange the most engaging tours in these amazing locations. He also possesses extensive knowledge about Mount Kilimanjaro and Lights on Africa are among the few travel companies that have a 99% success rate of reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. “Ascending Kilimanjaro is more than merely climbing a mountain,” he explains, “It takes experience to guide a group up and to be able to estimate when the weather conditions will be favorable. We take many things into consideration before agreeing to take a group up, including safety, group fitness factors, timeframes and flexibility.” Their commitment to deliver the upmost excellence of service is founded on the belief that honesty and professionalism are the keystones of any true joint venture. Believing that it is imagination and attention to detail that create a mutually rewarding experience for everyone involved.

FOUNDING HIS COMPANY Peniel is an example of what education can do to change the course of a person’s life. Before founding Lights on Africa, he studied hotel management in Arusha, and then at the Institute of Commercial Management in the UK he studied travel and tourism marketing and customer services.

THE TEAM Working with a small but engaged team of five, Peniel explains that his safari guides have over ten years of experience in wildlife and nature safaris. Each are able to approach the tours with engaging charisma and confidence.

Afterwards, he spent years working for several hotels, lodges and travel companies in Tanzania. Once fully equipped with the fundamental knowledge and know-how as well as his childhood

24

“Two things are very important for safari guides,” he says, “One is that they need to be able to communicate openly and fluently with the guests. All of my guides speak fluent English and we are able to offer Spanish, French and Italian on request, this allows the tours to be engaging and communicative and the guides to answer questions fully. Secondly, it is being able to be flexible with the approach and innovative when unexpected things happen on tour. Nature can be unpredictable, and our guides need to be savvy enough to make the best of this.”

THE SAFARIS The safaris themselves can either have set itineraries, which is common for first timers to Tanzania who don’t know what to expect and therefore cannot be expected to know all of what they want to see. Or they can be created around the client’s interests and budgets. Depending entirely on what the client is looking for, the safaris can last anywhere from 1-28 days and Lights on Africa provides all the necessary services to make the trip as smooth as possible. These includes logistic handling such as the arrangement of domestic flights and bus/shuttle bookings, hotel bookings, airport pick up and transfers and arranging safaris to historical and cultural sites. There are also many mountains to climb including Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Kenya, Mt. Meru, Oldoinyo Lengai, and Usambara Mountains. Peniel describes Tanzania as Africa’s finest destination and the statistics really speak for themselves. WILD DOG TOURS Offering the best views of Zimbabwe’s spectacular water ways, Nikki Blyth founded Wild Dog Tours in January 2013 after she saw an opportunity to manage a selection of houseboats. At the same time, she was offered a handful of private houses to hire out to holiday makers and she launched her business to manage both. Houseboating is one of the best ways to see both Lake Kariba and the famous Zambezi river and all of the natural beauty and wildlife that comes with them. Also, Wild Dog Tours are agents for Nyamoumba Fishing & Birding Lodge on the Zambezi River just outside the Kariba Gorge. This stylish self-catering chalet offers everything needed for a quiet getaway, including en suite bathrooms, central dining areas, swimming pool and braai facilities. All with the privacy of your own home away from home.

LAKE KARIBA Lake Kariba is an ideal place for fishing and game viewing. The largest man-made lake in the world, it is deep, vast and teeming with life. Thanks in part to the vegetation being burned before the lake was flooded after the building of the nearby Kariba Dam, the lake bed is incredibly fertile which has meant that fish have flourished there. This has attracted bird and wildlife to the shores making this a wonderful location for any animal lovers.

WHAT CLIENTS CAN EXPECT Wild Dog Tours offers a professional and personal service to its clients and can assist in all kinds of requests. The incredibly luxurious and unique houseboats are usually booked out for three nights, but it all depends on the client’s requests. Nikki recommends getting in touch should there be any questions.

THE ZAMBEZI The forth longest river in Africa, the Zambezi not only boasts the majestic Victoria Falls, but also has a long history of cultural significance for the local people in Africa. Its nutrient rich waters draw in animals and wildlife for miles around and it is also one of the most important rivers on the continent for hydroelectricity. Other notable falls include the Chavuma Falls at the border between Zambia and Angola, and Ngonye Falls, near Sioma in Western Zambia.

MAX FAVOURS SAFARIS The Business Behind The Maximum Satisfaction

Looking after the client from arrival to departure, Max Favours Safaris is a Kenyan company offering quality packages for visitors to East Africa. With a range of thrilling vacation options including wild African safaris, mountain climbing, excursions, cultural expeditions, volunteer packages and photographic safaris they also provide reliable car hire and shuttle services to ensure that every client’s holiday goes uninterrupted. In addition to the Kenya safaris they also offer day and Tanzanian tours for a completely rounded impression of what this side of the world has to offer. Owner, Mary Gathogo explains that it is all down to looking after the small details.

be in a lodge, a hotel or a camp site depending on what the budget is. “There is such a variety of affordable options with high standards available, that people should never dismiss the opportunity to see Africa simply because of their budget,” Mary says.

“We want clients to arrive and feel completely taken care of,” she says, “Moreover, we aim to provide quality safaris that leave lasting impressions and treasured memories of Kenya and Tanzania. To achieve this, you have to take care of the little things. Such as making sure that the logistics are sorted for a client and that, when on tour, the guide is able to speak their language.”

EXPERIENCED GUIDES, PASSIONATE STAFF Mary founded her business after a lifelong dream of working in the industry. Possessing of a passion for travel, meeting new people and building new relationships she found that helping others fulfill their own dreams, that of seeing Africa, was something she naturally took to. When it came to scaling up her business, she discovered that it was very important to work with like-minded people on the same page as her.

SAFARIS Mary explains that in all of their safaris they cater for every budget be it the first-timer, individuals or organized groups. The range of products are carefully created and tailored to meet each and every traveler’s interests. Each is discussed in a one-to-one basis with a specialist and accommodation is part of the safari and this could

“You should work with people who share your passion for the business,” Mary says, “We have ten staff members who are friendly and personally motivated. We provide periodic inhouse training to them to ensure that they are conversant with the various aspects of the tours of travel as we are very strict regarding our standards. Our staff, guides and drivers are the ambassadors of our business after all.”

encyclopedic knowledge of local culture, flora and fauna in the area as well as being able to make decisions on the road with confidence and charisma. “Making informed decisions on behalf of our clients is something they need to be confident in doing,” Mary explains, “Where will the animals be? How will the animals and the clients be affected by approaching weather conditions? What is necessary ‘at the moment’ to ensure the clients have a successful safari? All of these questions play an important part and help build our reputation as a reliable safari provider.”

SECRET TO GOOD RELATIONSHIPS Strong business relationships keep the business moving in hard times and according to Mary the positive relationships that you build with your customers, suppliers, business partners and employees bring about more opportunities and successes. “When you are kind, courteous and attentive you establish a good reputation for your business,” she says, “Our reputation is that we offer a strong personalized and experienced approach which clients trust, and this opens more doors than it could ever close. Your reputation is what brands your business and when times get hard it is what will keep your business afloat.”

The staff are all locally recruited and there are some things that Mary looks for when hiring, such as communication and engagement, honesty, good work ethic and an eagerness to add their knowledge and skills. Hands-on experience is especially important when it comes to the driver guides who are thoroughly trained in the tourism field. It is important for them to have an

has been designed very well and we’ve integrated our Facebook page to it. This makes it easy to communicate through our messenger. We encourage communication with everyone thinking about going on a safari so that any questions can be answered right away.”

Mary has taken several steps to futureproof her business from changes in technology, trends and the developing and changing needs of their guests and clientele. To her, it is important that any plan for the future be strong enough to succeed but flexible enough to change if necessary.

2019

“We cannot depend on one part of the business for complete success,” she says, “So we are bringing in a number of new elements that can act as extensions for the existing business or standalone products.”

Photographic safaris have taken off in a big way. With photo-friendly platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook providing every professional or would-be photographer with an engaged audience of their own. Mary sees it as good business practice to offer the sorts of expeditions that will provide clients the opportunity to capture the best pictures.

To do this, she explains, they have had to keep themselves updated with global trends, which has never been easier thanks to social media. They also pay attention to what customers say and observe how they behave during the safaris, as their enjoyment is the compass with which they direct their business.

“We have a new product for those who have a love for visiting remote places and engaging with diverse cultures and taking photographs,” Mary says, “We are already partnering with a professional company that can offer the best standards on this new product and will be launching very soon.”

“You cannot predict the future demand,” she says, “You have to use your imagination, experience and research to estimate what will be trending in the industry. This is usually determinable by what people are speaking about now.”

Additionally, Mary believes that through the use of multimedia and by enabling her guests to produce these images it helps spread the international message regarding the importance of this land being left undeveloped. Helping to fight against the incessant rise of land buying, poaching and trophy hunting by replacing shooting with guns with shooting with cameras.

She elaborates that by being able to plot a course based upon this information you can begin to identify and manage the risk that is involved. Business is always unpredictable, but it is important that you’re able to pivot easily and have a favourable environment for innovation. “To encourage this innovative creativity, we regularly send our employees to conferences and seminars,” Mary says, “And we give the freedom to experiment and try new things.”

MARKETING Mary reveals that one of the challenges that she faced when setting up Max Favours Safaris was marketing. It was a decisive step to ensure that this part of the business did not let down the others and things have improved reliably since those early days. “Communication via a strong website is so important,” she says, “That any queries are responded to within an hour, if not sooner, sets you apart from many competitors. And, thanks to its organic yet futuristic aesthetic it can be decorated and styled however a site owner chooses. This allows a site owner to determine their unique appeal without relying solely on their choice of accommodation.

Ryan Duarte, co-founder of Glo Domes is on a mission to help people like you and me get themselves out of the rat-race and develop reliable streams of passive income. While unique accommodations on Airbnb and glamping sites are increasingly popular, to offer something different that can still produce a healthy revenue stream is a challenge for those developers who are just starting out. For them, Glo Domes will be a breath of fresh air.

Glamping site owners have to be selective with what tents or units they are going to be using. Yurts, lodges, igloos and wigwams are popular but quite permanent and once they are erected it can be expensive to move them. Glo Domes however, have been designed to offer mobile-permanence. A team of four could assemble one in eight hours and take it down just as fast. The entire structure can be moved in the back of a pick-truck and each one comes with a five-year full replacement guarantee.

GLO DOME The Glo Dome is a geodesic dome that is easy to assemble, sturdy and secure and magnificently versatile. Including air conditioning and heating each Glo Dome provides maximum comfort within

38

THE VALUE OF WORKING IN THE SHADOW Founders Ryan Duarte and Chirag Patel were very specific with what they wanted to offer when they launched Glo Domes. They were also very much aware of what the competition was doing and what they were up against. In America there are already a handful of very established businesses producing domes for the glamping industry who believe that they have the market monopolised. Whereas, many people would have looked at the shadow cast by these companies and felt intimidated by it, Ryan and Chirag made full use of this shade to see what gaps in the market were shining through.

“It’s thanks to him that we’re not selling Glo Domes at some expensive time-share-esque luncheons seminars for business people and retirees on a beach.” Ryan says.

“No business begins as the biggest in the industry,” Ryan points out, “We were able to assess what these companies were doing right for their customers and where they were letting their customers down. Then we designed our business around a foundation of offering a top service and filling those gaps. At this point we don’t need to be the biggest, we want the happiest customers and to grow on that.”

He goes on to say that he believes it is important to have a business partner who doesn’t care about your feelings or how precious you might be about a certain idea. At the same time, not being automatically dismissive is just as important, being willing to hear every idea fully to see if there is any value there. These sorts of business people are rare to come by and should be treasured. The pair of them met in August 2017 and Glo Domes has been going since January 2018. They have geared up the production side and sold a handful of units with an average sale of $21,500. So far, these sales have been to American business people who initially bought their Glo Domes with the intention of using them professionally.

HOW IT BEGAN Ryan Duarte is a serial entrepreneur who spent the first half of his professional life striving to create enough passive income to support himself and his family. He owns a software company that has patented a number of protocols, a laundromat, organic agricultural farms in norther California and a hay brokering company that he runs through his horse farm called Bitteroot Valley Paso Fino Horse Farm. He is a man always open to new ideas and drawn to creative opportunities, relishing the chance to work with like-minded people. “I attend mastermind sessions,” he explains, “It’s a great place to openly discuss ideas with other business people, there we can have a proper look at these ideas and reveal the good ones that can be used, the bad ones that need to be developed and the potential failures we need to dodge.” It was actually at one of these sessions that he met his business partner Chirag Patel who works in the finance industry and owns a hedge fund. Ryan describes him as a straight talking, down-the-line business man who’s not afraid to speak his mind and call a spade a spade.

“However,” Ryan says, “We later discovered that they liked their Glo Domes so much that they’re now using them at 39

their homes instead. Some of these have been for hunting or fishing cabins and others have been for home extensions for their leisure activities. One customer ended up using it so that his son, who hadn’t moved out of the house yet, could at least move out into the garden and have a place of his own.”

as a package that can be delivered on a half tonne truck and can be assembled in a matter of hours. We also have a team who can help set up the domes for the site owner if necessary.”

OUT OF THE DOME THINKING While it is sell, sell, sell at the moment, Ryan is exploring all of the possible uses for the Glo Domes. So far, they know that glamping and boutique stays both locally and internationally are an obvious fit but there are some other areas that he is exploring that have shown great potential. “The Glo Domes are weather proof and solar powered with heating or cooling apparatus and offer brilliant viewing opportunities,” he says, “Festivals for music, art and travel are an exciting opportunity. It’s easy to picture a Glo Dome at a music festival offering something special for VIP guests and onsite campers. Then there are places like truck stop motels.”

EARLY DAYS It is early days for Glo Domes but the impression they’ve made is quite tangible and the future is going to be very exciting and busy. Right now, the business partners are totally focused on development and sales.

Truck stop motels, servicing the travelling professional as well as the long distance holiday seekers are an important service for anyone travelling long distance by road. Motels and hotels along the way need to find new ways to make themselves attractive and different. People have become far more expectant and discerning when it comes to where they lay their heads. The Glo Domes will offer something unique and special to these motels and truck stops making full use of what open land they may have.

“We were very careful to align ourselves and partner with the best suppliers who could manufacture the different components for the Glo Domes. This meant we could speed up the process of each order to a matter of days and not weeks,” Ryan says, “Customers receive their Glo Domes

“You can imagine a building such as a motel may have a garden area that is pretty much unused, or a rooftop that has never been visited. With a small investment they could turn these places into profit making areas offering something truly wonderful,” Ryan says.

HOME IN THE DOME Even if a location is in the middle of a cold snap climate the Glo Domes have been designed for all weather. Each can be fitted with an airlocked aluminum and glass front door to create a location for putting on your winter shoes or taking them off before coming into your cozy Glo Dome. This last idea could possibly have come from the Glo Dome at Ryan’s home in Montana which the family uses during the all important “Family Time”. This is a designated device-free area where he and his family can spend some quality time together.

40

“I am a workaholic,” Ryan admits, “If I don’t have a reason to stop, I’ll just keep working. So, I make full use of my Glo Dome because firstly, it gives me time to spend with my kids and my wife. I have two children of 5 and 7, and my wife of 14 years is due to add a third to our family. Secondly, it is a magical place for my children to make memories with their parents.”

their brand. Here a game or a VR location can be projected onto the inside of the dome effectively creating an entirely different use for them. He says, “There are many immediate uses for this particular innovation and it’s just an example of how far we are pushing the boundaries of what we can use the Glo Domes for.”

His Glo Dome is suitably kitted out as well, with a loft design and a built-in sauna that is as warm as his house, irrespective of the weather outside. And, this gives Ryan the opportunity to stress test the Glo Dome against children, a pregnant wife and the blustery Montana winter.

THE DETAILS

2019 DEVELOPMENTS

As part of their offering they are now offering Glo Domes made of hemp or “Hemp Domes” where the cover is made of PVC coated hemp fabric. For the eco hemp connoisseurs a Glo Dome can solve a host of problems.

Industry standard is 90 day warranty, Glo Domes offer a 5 year full replacement warranty standard. All Glo Domes also come standard with a split unit AC/Heater mounted to a dolly for easy mobility (are also available without, on request).

By November 2019 Ryan aims to have 30-40 affiliate sales people, including the likes of realtors, glamping agencies and independent affiliates and he wants to have sold 365 domes. So, on average, one a day. He laughs, “Some of our competitors may sell ten times as many as we do,” he says, “But that doesn’t matter, a business runs on happy clients and innovations.”

Best bang for buck: 1,218sf Glo Dome with 16’ ceilings and insulation, includes passive solar bay window, aluminum and glass locking door, Daikin split unit (whisper quiet ultra-efficient) AC/Heater, deck plans and camouflage net for $20k USD AKA $400/month.

Their next market innovation, Ryan reveals, is to add full immersion, VR augmented domes to

EXCLUSIVE WITH SAFARIDEAL.COM Interview with Robin Cormack By Donnie Rust

Husband and wife team, Robin and Clare Cormack have created a solution to connect people with a passion for wildlife with the best safaris around the globe with an easy to navigate and free to use service that greatly benefits from a prominent personal touch. Donnie Rust got the chance to speak with co-founder Robin Cormack to find out what is the driving force behind this business that is facilitating people’s dreams.

Based in Surrey, Britain but working with an international selection of clients as well as travel partners, SafariDeal.com combine simplicity and transparency with a powerful customer focus. This has already made them, since they launched in November 2017, a favourite for travelers. With the power of travel blogs today proving that opinion really does count, SafariDeal.com has focused on providing interesting selections that are experience-focused in the wildlife sector.

“We are an online platform that lists worldwide wildlife adventures from responsible operators.” Robin says, “We make it easy for travelers to find their ideal holiday safari and connect with the right operator.”

THE BUSINESS Robin explains that this was one of the main reasons for starting SafariDeal.com, “We combined our digital marketing and travel experience into one company,” he says, “We want to make a difference in local community and conservation efforts. Wildlife is under threat internationally and we want to be involved and do our part.”

42

“We’re the Uber of safaris,” Robin says, “We connect people with the safari tour operators and offer a thoroughly researched selection of destinations and a variety of expeditions.”

Robin explains that over a year and a half was dedicated to researching the idea before they launched. Building up a catalogue of safari itenaries, developing the necessary partnerships with various tour operators and getting their team together. He says, “Today we work with international tour operators, DMC’s, ground handlers, product and camp owners. These itineraries are then marketed to our safari community.”

Have you ever fancied swimming with whales in Mexico? - https://safarideal.com/safari-tours/ socorro-islands-on-solmar-v-liveaboard

THAT ALL IMPORTANT SPECIAL TOUCH Keeping in touch with their community via newsletters, SafariDeal.com is a very easy to navigate website. There may appear to be fewer options than the likes of some of the online behemoths, but this is part of the design. Instead of just hurling hundreds of options at a user, they provide curated selections. Furthermore, any user will know that the selections available have gone through their exhaustive research and are most likely to provide the best experience.

They know their industry down to the bones.

SAFARIDEAL.COM All the world’s continents offer their own safari opportunities. Even places like Antarctica. A safari is simply where people are able to see and appreciate wildlife in its natural environment. SafariDeal.com was set up to connect one with the other, along the same lines as taxi services or accommodation bookings.

Users of SafariDeal.com get the benefit of that experience and can rest assured that all of the safari opportunities on the site are not only the best value for money but also responsible in the manner in which they operate. “If you’ve never been on a safari you don’t know what to expect,” Robin says, “There are three things to consider: one, value; two, responsibility; three, experience. Is it good value for money? Are the tour operators aware of any impact to wildlife? And three, are they experienced enough to educate as well as entertain?”

43

THE SAFARI IMPACT ON CONSERVATION Robin is passionate about wildlife and protecting it. During our interview he described how wildlife today, around the world, is affected more by behaviours than simply the highly mediatized “global warming,” threat. More and more, tourism is having to bear the weight of responsibility with protecting these natural treasures. He’s seen poachers be able to run amok because antipoaching is so massively underfunded. Funds generated through responsible tourism can have a huge impact on areas that are affected by negative human factors such as poaching. Apart from these local issues, global warming also poses a threat. But ignorance and indifference can create an even more immediate threat to the animals and the environment, so education is vital. Yet in the face of this, he has also witnessed over the last two decades in the industry, the hugely positive effect that responsible safaris can have on conservation. And how, especially today with the power of social media, the ripple effect of these safaris can reach even further. “Photography Safaris are more popular than ever he says happily, “Today sharing experiences is everything and it means that every person on a safari is an ambassador. Social media has the power to change attitudes and perceptions..” He adds, “Safaris provide employment for locals which goes deeper than just giving people jobs. It is nothing less than a triumph that some safari companies are employing former poachers who now, thanks to new opportunities, are involved in the fight against it. “ Education is important and all the deals available on SafariDeal.com have this in common. The tours have to offer real, worthwhile information about the area, the wildlife and the people who live there as part of it.

person who goes home afterwards with that value assigned in their hearts and minds is a victory. Travelling as much as they can,, doing everything from Namibian self-drive adventures and diving in Mozambique to camping in France and taking the family on safari in South Africa, Robin and Clare know the value of getting back into nature.

“Wherever there is wildlife there are cultures who live alongside it,” Robin says, “And their history and stories form such a strong component to a safari’s value.”

“People become so wrapped up in routines of getting up and going to work that it shrinks their worlds,” Robin says, “It’s so

THE VALUE OF A GOOD SAFARI According to Robin, the first job of any tour operator and safari guide is to give value to wildlife. To create a culture of love, appreciation and joy at seeing these animals in their natural habitat. Each

In fact, if he was remembered for anything he would like it to be his legendary braai skills, “Hot and fast as well as low and slow and always with a cold beer!” COMPANY ADDRESS: 4 Deepdene Vale, Dorking, Surrey, RH41NL

While SafariDeal.com is still in its growth phase Robin admits that there isn’t a lot of balance between business and lifestyle. But when he does get the chance to unwind Robin takes to the mountain bike trails. He is also a rugby coach, enjoys painting and drawing and loves to braai (South African BBQ), which he considers himself to be a master at!

MOBILE SOLAR CHARGERS LTD Mobile Solar Chargers Ltd was founded in April 2012 after the founder, Tim Smerdon and his family crossed the Sahara Desert in an old Peugeot. During this time, which also saw Tim setting up a Fairtrade business with the Women’s Groups in Uganda, he saw the need for reliable power sources that were off grid. “A little bit of power goes a long way,” he explains, “Especially when business and education are involved. The infrastructure in some of these locations is not great but they still require power.” He explains, “Our Expedition packages have improved the safety and connectivity of climbers during multiple trips to Everest and in 2018 three different teams used them.”

AN ESSENTIAL TOOL The Mobile Solar Charger is a fit for purpose portable power charger suitable for all scenarios, whether it is for back up or full out-country travel. While this is an ideal tool for any traveler whether you’re an executive or a backpacker, Tim has had the chance to test them against the most incredible environments.

Some of the other expeditions that have been powered by Mobile Solar Chargers Ltd include some of the most hostile places including, ExIcemaiden, Expedition 5, Challenge Antarctica, 65Degrees North and Uphill Battle. “After the Nepalese Earthquake, we also designed the ‘Solar Charging Can’ to give immediate power such as SatComms and medical lighting in disaster and refugee camp scenarios,” he reveals, “We hope we can use them to reduce the loss of life that these natural disasters cause, not only during but afterwards when people are left stranded.”

REVIEW

COLAPZ Manufacturers of Space Saving Technology and Products. Solving those annoying issues that you thought were unsolvable. and the ones that have since been developed have been highly influential in the design of accommodation for such industries as glamping. In this market space saving technology allows for more unique places to be designed without sacrificing the area to move in. It has also helped many homes and homemakers to neaten up many areas and gain more space and declutter their lives.

Founded in 2010 by David Fannin and Shaun Moore, the aptly named Colapz aims to make the “everyday” extraordinary and the “useful” beautiful too. Their business achieves this through the design and creation of space saving products and solutions for campers, glampers and boutique accommodation providers. Having already revolutionized buckets and clever watering cans, this wholly British company is changing the way we think about the value of space.

THE PRODUCT AND SERVICES

THE BUSINESS

Made from flexible, eco-friendly material, the cleverly collapsible products enable users to save space and at the same time do something about saving the world too. The products can be twisted down for compact storage and easy transport, while opening up spaces in homes, shops and lorries. Each product comes with a year-long guarantee but the expectation is that they’ll last a lifetime.

In 2010 David Fannin and Shaun Moore came across the materials at a trade exhibition and felt that there was an opportunity for design-led products which were functional and space saving. David and Shaun have between 20 and 25 years of experience of product and graphic design in Far East manufacturing and delivering into the Western retail market. Colapz’s initial product

WILD-HART The Joy of Creating Something Special. South Devon glamping pod, cabin and playground suppliers.

Specifically serving as a means of staving off boredom.

Twenty-two years of designing and building playgrounds, cabins and home furniture for various contracts has served Wild Hart cofounder Nick Sneller very well. Working alongside his wife Colette Hudson, the pair officially entered the glamping market in 2016 and the interest and feedback for their business has been fantastic.

This flies in the face of the glamping values of combining nature and the outdoors, where the aesthetic of a place is very important. With this in mind, Nick has called upon his furniture design background and his love of working with natural, local timbers.

Offering crossovers for glamping site owners looking to cater for families, Wild Hart create accommodation for guests such as pods and cabins and also the sorts of engaging playground areas that will keep children enthralled for hours. And probably make grown-ups green with envy.

“Wild Hart was set up to fully explore the idea of developing a company to create glamping accommodations,” he says, “But the value of a unique, bespoke play area for children expands the possibilities. Children need an area to play and families need a comfortable, luxurious place to stay.”

While many camping sites offer playgrounds for children, these are usually stand-alone areas that do not add much to the aesthetic of the place.

50

HOW DID IT BEGIN? Nick explains that his wife Collette has a flair for interior design and décor which he admits is not his strong suit. He is a trained cabinet maker, and throughout his career and due to his general enjoyment of working with timber, he developed strong affiliations with woodlands and woodlands management. “My furniture is nature orientated,” he explains, “I make use of the shapes of the timber and take a lot of inspiration from nature. In 2002 I set up a business making fine furniture and sculptural designs.”

“What is important is that it is exciting and safe,” he says. To this end all of Nick’s playgrounds adhere to the standard set by EN1176/77, which is a guideline to suggest how to minimize risks.

This business led to Nick making large sculptural furniture for schools and public parks and was one of the elements that led to his playground creations. A hands-on education option was given as a means to engage children and communities in building with timber and helping to create their new space.

“We install a playground and we get an independent officer to go and inspect it to confirm that we have done everything in our power to balance out that fun versus safety conundrum.”

GLAMPING ACCOMMODATION PRODUCTS

And, as glamping became ever increasingly popular and site owners were scrambling for new ways to differentiate themselves from their competition, Nick saw an opportunity to use his skills to create the classic pods which have made the glamping portion of his business very successful. Then, he is able to add value to each site with the options of certified playgrounds uniquely designed to fit with the location and making use of the natural area.

The Octa-Pod is the most popular seller at Wild Hart. A modular design of frame work and panels where the round pole framework is organic and natural. The paneling is insulated so can be used all year round and heated by AstecTherm. Nick explains that this design of paneling and natural framework creates an adaptable structure that maintains the element of bespokeness as no two timbers are identical.

“As a supplier into this industry it pays to be able to add extra value in areas that site owners may not have thought of,” he says.

With a main team including himself, his wife, a recently employed furniture maker and another four part time staff members, it takes roughly two months to design and create a custom Octa-Pod.

PLAYGROUNDS Glamping, as an industry is still finding its feet with regards to standardization and quality assurance. However, playgrounds by necessity need to stay within a certain standard of safety. Nick explains that his aim is to strike a balance between creativity and safety.

“It’s a quality product,” he explains, “Our clients are looking for something that is creative and original, yet adaptable and reliable. It takes time to do the job properly.”

According to him, playgrounds should not be themed but rather allowed to be environmentally dictated. Bespokely designed to suit what is available on site. His approach is to create something that is exciting and different, offering opportunities to climb, to crawl and jump and let the children’s imagination fill in the details while they play.

51

CREATIVITY

the project strongly determines the price range, keeping in mind that some clients are just looking for the bare essentials while others want full heating, insulation, plumbing and power.

Creativity is very important, Nick says, “There are certain parameters that have to be followed to make an accommodation or playground safe, but everything on top of that is down to imagination and ingenuity.”

“Bespokeness is what we do, and we never look at a set product,” Nick says “We think of ourselves as a service provider instead of product peddlers because even though our products such as the Hex-Pod and Octa-Pod are premanufactured you wouldn’t call them off the shelf.”

Site surveys are quite important in Nick’s line of work and he has visited a number of sites and worked very closely with clients to discuss design ideas. He admits that often, when a site visit is required it is because it’s due to specifically complex environments. “Glamping thrives on luxurious accommodation in unique locations,” Nick says, “So there are always interesting challenges that need to be overcome in some creative and ingenious manner.” One client, he recalls, had a steep hillside where he wanted a treehouse style cabin/pod built to take full advantage of an uninterrupted view. They had to create a structure to sit on the hill that would be completely secure. Hillsides are not famous for being considerate when being built upon and the client did not want them to landscape the entire area. Therefore, carefully shaping the structure to fit the hillside not only provided a stable structure for the pod but managed to not interfere with the natural beauty of the site.

Instead, the Hex-Pod and Octa-Pod are very adaptable. If one is purchased and it is not big enough, or it needs to be enlarged one of the panels can be removed and another pod bolted on to. Everything bolts and unbolts, from a flatpack unit and can be disassembled as quickly as its assembled.

“This isn’t an office-based job,” Nick says happily, “We go on site visits to understand the site and work with clients to manage expectations and aspirations and develop ideas. If I didn’t like challenges this wouldn’t be the job for me.” NOT OFF THE SHELF New clients and old can expect some exciting developments for this year as Nick and his team are creating products for new pods and fully functioning tree houses. Their products are manufactured in their workshop in East Devon and then they assemble them onsite for their clients. The complexity of

52

COLLABORATIONS

Nick reveals that he is strongly considering a lease programme for his pods for sites who may wish to try out different styles of accommodations before settling on one.

Nick, who uses one of his own pods as an office, knows the value of research and is very selective on which companies he partners his business with. This is why he has chosen companies like Devon based AstecTherm and NuVision, which he has collaborated with on multiple occasions.

“2019 is going to be an exciting year for us,” Nick says, “And for glamping in general.”

“Your supplier’s standards become your own in the end,” he explains.

SMALLWOOD TREEHOUSES Magical and Safe. Thirty Feet Up.

it after they have completed the work and left. The benefits of repeat business aside, Leigh just doesn’t want anyone he’s work for to be left with something that they’re unsatisfied with. He wants something that the client will marvel at.

As a tailor-made supplier to the glamping industry Smallwood Treehouses don’t just design and build their namesake. After all, a treehouse is more than the sum of its parts, and owner Leigh Smallwood appears to have realised this. As a result, in creating lavish, luxurious, aesthetically sublime buildings what this company is doing is creating childhood memories for grownups.

TREEHOUSES HOLDING A CLIENT’S DREAMS You can see from testimonials that this firm from Nottingham have received that clients really cannot recommend them highly enough. Including phrases like, “… we had the pleasure of employing

It is okay to be down-right jealous of company owner, Leigh Smallwood’s business. Through his joinery, building and construction business he turns people’s dreams into reality through bespoke designed projects covering a far wider scope than just treehouses. All of his projects are designed to fit the parameters of the client’s needs and wishes and undergo a thorough planning and brainstorming session that leaves no area unexplored. As it says on his website www.smallwoodtreehouses.co.uk, “imagination is key”. Whether it is a kitchen, bathroom, landscaping project or a treehouse that his company is lending its expertise to, Leigh is insistent that the client be absolutely happy with

54

Smallwood Bespoke project developments several times…” and “exemplary approach to project management, cost and craftmanship,” their reputation has turned them into a powerful word of mouth business with much work coming from recommendations and referrals.

see the project as a complete whole before the first board is planed. The more precise the detail the better. This doesn’t mean that everything a client dreams about is possible within the realms of physics. But, it does give Leigh and his crew the opportunity to apply their experience and capabilities to the project and to get an understanding of requirements and the use of space.

Smallwood Treehouses are different from others in their business because of their appreciation of what can’t be seen. The appreciation for the “hidden” and “private” value of the projects being created. Other workmen see a project in terms of a list of materials needed, time taken, costs accrued and measurements. It is rare to find someone who first wants to understand what the picture is that the client has in their mind and really explore the idea fully. To do this there are several steps that are undertaken.

SITE VISIT A site visit follows. This is where Leigh and his crew start laying down the plans that they’ll need to construct the treehouse. Here they share ideas with the client, review other similar projects in their portfolio and explore the four fundamentals. Opportunities, constraints, costings and options. Sometimes a client may not realise the full scope of possibilities but with their expertise, experience and imagination they help them see what could be done.

EXPLORATION After an initial contact and discussion, Leigh’s very next step is a full exploration of the client’s idea. This is as much to paint the details for the client as it is for the builder. It is after all vital that both sides

55

DETAILS As the only habitable treehouse company in the UK, the treehouses produced by Smallwood Treehouses come in every shape and size from those for children, for hotels and even unique accommodations for the glamping industry. Leigh only works with the finest carpenters who share a fastidious attention to detail that matches his own. Treehouses are fun, that’s the attraction of them. There is an excitement that we feel that reminds us of when we were children and would climb a tree. Also, because no two trees are the same this guarantees that each and every design will be unique and magical. For the client, and in the glamping industry where many of his treehouses are now regularly inhabited, the guests, this magic is all that counts. It is down to Smallwood Treehouses to ensure that the most important things like safety, reliability and functionality are present while not hampering the guest’s ability to enjoy themselves.

And it’s not just about being high up in the branches of a tree. It’s all of the sensual elements that are involved. Such as enjoying your morning coffee while sitting on a patio looking out from such a view. Sleeping in a luxurious bed while surrounded by the sound of tree limbs moving, the breeze blowing through the leaves. The smell of the wood.

GLAMPING This sensibility to what the client wants and what the client needs to provide a safe accommodation for guests has made Smallwood Treehouses the firm that glamping site owners go-to when they want to be able to offer “something special”.

Many children, when sitting in their makeshift treehouses, imagine the freedoms of adulthood as being able to live in a treehouse because you’re grown up and allowed to. The allure of being able to achieve this childhood dream, even for a period, is something that cannot be denied. At some point when we were young, we all wanted to live in a tree.

Glamping relies on the combination of camping and glamour, and a luxurious treehouse is very glamorous. In fact, unique accommodations such as tree houses are in such demand nowadays that glamping sites can ask up to three times what they would ask for a lodge, tent or yurt.

56

And there doesn’t even need to be an actual tree to build a treehouse either! Not in the traditional sense. Not every site has tree growths substantial enough to hold up a house, but this is where design and style come into it. Several of Leigh’s projects involve creating “houses in trees.” Using a variety of techniques, they can build very substantial buildings that interact with trees without necessarily relying on them as a foundation. This is useful when the project is a large one to make use of a growth of trees that are beautiful but not strong enough to be load bearing. Using pillars, stilts and clever architecture you can create houses that have space for hot tubs, several bedrooms, living areas and star gazing platforms all within the branches of tall trees without running the risk of damaging the trees themselves.

you know that someone can make the most complicated dream project seem straight forward, you know your kitchen, bathroom or landscaping venture will be in good hands. And with the glamping industry continuing to grow in leaps and bounds, it is important for newcomers to the industry to know who the best suppliers are to get these unique dreams off the ground and safely into the air. Or the branches. WEBSITE: www.smallwoodtreehouses.co.uk

TREEHOUSES AND EVERYTHING ELSE Their success with designing the coolest treehouses available in the UK, comes really from being able to apply the skills and experience that Leigh’s team has been able to garner over a long and successful career of bespoke projects in the home. This has resulted in many glamping site owners having Leigh Smallwood on their speed dial. When

GAMEWATCHERS SAFARIS AND PORINI CAMPS Award Winning Safaris to watch and photograph the wildlife. Where the sound of nature rings over the Horizon. Gamewatchers Safaris and Porini Camps are setting the highest standards for photographic wildlife tours with accommodation in authentic bush camps, demonstrating that business can flourish beside wildlife without encroaching or disrupting it.

“A safari holiday in the Porini Camps is perfect for the true wildlife enthusiast who wishes to get close to nature and enjoy an undisturbed personal adventure with a knowledgeable and qualified safari guide, he says. Imagine a guided walk with a Maasai warrior, learning to see the African wilderness as they do and tracking big cats and their prey. Or, night safari game drives in safari jeeps providing you the opportunity to spot the nocturnal civet cat and caracal. Or perhaps you would like to sit in comfort in one of the camps and simply enjoy listening to the night sounds of the bush ringing out as the nocturnal creatures come alive.

Speaking with the Chairman and Founder, Jake Grieves-Cook, he explained that each of the ecofriendly camps is situated within a private wildlife conservancy to offer an intimate and exclusive safari holiday experience. Something memorable that is away from the hordes of minibuses crammed full of noisy tourists.

DESTINATIONS FOR THAT PERFECT SHOT

nights at the Porini Camps and this can include a number of different safaris and outings during that period. For example, a six-night safari itinerary will give enough time to visit two or three different wildlife areas, each one offering something slightly different.

Wildlife safaris that provide the chance to observe and photograph wild animals in their natural habitat have always been very popular. Offering the best locations to secure great wildlife shots is part of what makes Gamewatchers so popular with photographers of every level who have the opportunity to capture something wonderful and share their experiences.

The day starts with a dawn wake-up call with tea or coffee served in a guest’s tent. Then an early morning game drive coming back for a late breakfast or a picnic in the bush before returning to camp for lunch and to relax in the heat of the day. Then afternoon tea followed by an afternoon game drive returning in the evening for dinner. The game drives are in open-sided vehicles with expert Maasai guides who grew up in the area.

Jake says, “Kenya is perfect for dramatic shots. There are a huge variety of landscapes, scenery and habitats including dry bush country, Rift Valley lakes, high mountain ranges with dense montane forests and open savannah plains. It is a good thing that our guests can store thousands of pictures digitally instead of relying on carrying rolls of film!” With such a variety of landscapes that always seem to be shifting and changing with the seasons and animals that thrive there, it is difficult to have favourites. But there are a couple of places that Jake is particularly fond of.

“We take the guest’s enjoyment seriously,” Jake explains, “You book your international flight to Africa and from our base in Nairobi we take care of everything else for you, from arrival to departure. That includes meeting you on arrival at Nairobi, providing transfers to the hotels, booking accommodation and internal flights to the parks as well as booking the best camps and providing safari transport for wildlife viewing. In addition to Kenya we arrange trips to Tanzania as well as to other leading destinations in Africa.”

“If I had to choose,” he says, “I’d say that Amboseli, Laikipia and the Mara are definitely up there.”

WHAT CAN A GUEST EXPECT? Jake reveals that Gamewatchers Safaris is one of the longest established safari outfitters based in East Africa and one of the most competitive. Guests usually spend between five and twelve

on safari in Kenya annually. They operate eight small safari camps as well as managing wildlife conservancies on thousands of acres of land. These are leased from rural communities to create areas of protected habitat for wildlife, “We manage the conservancies in partnership with the communities and employ wardens and rangers to protect the wildlife.” By employing family members of the local communities and relying on their experience and knowledge of the land and incorporating this into the safari, Gamewatchers creates an environment of greater understanding and appreciation for the importance of sustainable and non-invasive wildlife viewing.

much more expensive safaris. Including day and night game drives, open-sided 4×4 safari vehicles, guided walks and expert guides but at a hugely reduced price. This is achieved by offering basic accommodation camps that are ideal for those who are travelling on a budget but who don’t want to compromise on their wildlife-viewing opportunities.

RECOGNITION Gamewatchers Safaris has received numerous international awards including “Africa’s Responsible Tourism Award 2018” in the World Travel Awards for 2018. They have also consistently won awards for “Kenya’s Leading Safari Camp Brand” and “Africa’s Leading Tented Safari Camps”. In 2015, they were “Kenya’s Tour Operator of the Year” in the 2015 Ecotourism Warrior Awards.

ECO-TOURISM Gamewatchers have been a pioneer in ecotourism for nearly thirty years, combining environmental protection with cultural preservation by working with local communities on conservation projects. Under the guidance of Jake and managing director Dr Mohanjeet Brar they have committed themselves to preserving Africa’s unique wildlife, landscapes and giving support to local communities. “We believe that the best way to do this is through sustainable ecotourism ventures that benefit the local communities and give our guests a rewarding experience,” Jake says, “Our Porini Camps are a sustainable model that practically implements these principles. We are dedicated to providing our clients with exemplary personalized service and strive to have them leave as friends.”

“All our camps consistently receive excellent customer reviews and we have also been recognized as TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Hall of Fame winners,” adds Jake who stresses the importance of giving the highest priority to seeing that guests have a great experience resulting in a high level of repeat visits and recommendations.

The Porini Camps are situated within exclusive wildlife conservancies in the Amboseli eco-system, Laikipia and the Mara. As well as the Porini Camps, they also operate two Adventure Camps, which have simpler facilities but with the same high-quality experience normally associated with

He certainly appreciates the awards for his business’s hard work and the amount of effort that his team have had to put into their services to bring them to this level. But the award that means the most to him is to see clients return year after year for advice and support with their safari travel plans.

“I think if you’re going to measure your success by anything,” he says, “It should be by how many clients return the following year.”

As a direct result of these efforts wildlife numbers have been able to increase in these protected areas, including the famous Big Five of Africa. Rare and endangered species numbers have also risen and benefit greatly from the restricted numbers of visitors allowed into these areas.

GOOLETS Take the time to enjoy the journey

It only took one gulet cruise for business owners Mitja and Alenka to totally fall in love with the concept. In fact, it made such an impression on the pair that it wasn’t long before they were putting plans together to share the experience with others. With a shared background in tourism, Goolets was soon born.

As CEO Mitja MirtiČ explains, Goolets combines the luxury of a hotel, the adventure of a cruise and the boutique style of a top-line glamping resort with glamorous destinations. These include Turkey, Croatia and Greece with additional destination options such as Montenegro and Italy. But it is the time spent upon the yachts, which are called gulets, that make the holiday.

JOURNEYING WITH STYLE

“A gulet is a mostly wooden vessel that comes with a full crew including an experienced captain, chef, sailor and hostess,” Mitja says, “The gulets range in size from twenty up to fifty meters in length and have anywhere from four to eight cabins. Some of our larger fleet come with ten and up to sixteen cabins as well.”

Discerning travellers will know that “how” you reach your destination is as important as getting there. Taking this to heart, Goolets is a company that has perfected the art of “journeying” in style.

63

THE GORGEOUS DESTINATIONS

According to Mitja, gulet cruises are similar to yachting holidays, if more affordable and somewhat slower. He says, “In the yacht business travel is faster as it is more focussed on getting you to your destination as soon as possible, but a gulet is slower and allows you the chance to properly appreciate the experience of the journey. With food services that are nothing short of amazing, luxurious accommodation and of course wonderful sea views.”

For Goolets, Croatia is the hottest destination at the moment, with Dubrovnik and Hvar being very popular for the jet setters. Greece is always very popular for its food and culture while Turkey, which offers the widest range of gulets (more than 1000 to choose from) is a great choice for variety. Mitja suggests that a combination of Turkey and Greece at this time of year is probably one of the best ways to experience the cruise.

He describes a gulet as a floating hotel. The finest food is served, the cabins are cleaned, the beach is always right there for you to enjoy and the hotel moves from location to location to ensure the view is always fresh and new. The wood gives it style and each vessel is unique and not part of some serial manufacturing. Gulets and yachts differ in one main area, yachts all look alike and are for show offs, gulets are for people who appreciate class. Gulets are preferred by those who like to be pampered, that like great food, to explore places away from crowds and most importantly take their time.

“I have several favourite routes and it would take too long to list them all,” he says, “One of the best of them is a one-way cruise from Split to Dubrovnik where you can experience all the best islands that Dalmatia can offer. This route takes you from Split to Hvar, then to BraČ island with its Golden Cape, to KorČula island then to Mljet or the Lastovo Nature Park with Dubrovnik in the end.”

TAILORED MADE CRUISES Mitja says that most cruises are based on seven nights and eight days from Saturday to Saturday. This being said a ten day or fortnight cruise would also make perfect sense and clients can expect a completely tailored cruise to suit their wishes and tastes. As an example, a seven-day cruise from Split to Dubrovnik can be experienced very differently if you are a family with small kids or if you are a group of young couples. Families like safe beaches and family orientated water activities, couples may wish to swim and relax, eat superb meals and drink the best wines. Or if you are a group of seniors, you may wish to explore different towns, visit museums, experience local culture or just drink at a different taverna every day.

“Beachballs and sand, candles and romance or jet skis and parachuting. Each group has its own cup of tea,” Mitja explains, “All you need to do is tell us what yours is.”

THE BUSINESS KEEPING GOOLETS AFLOAT Goolets was founded by Alenka and Mitja MirtiČ in 2004. It is a family business and they are both still very involved and personally believe gulet cruise holidays are the best type of holidays in the world. The company mantra is “Life is good” and their main mission is to put this mentality to everyone working in the company.

64

“It took around ten years for the company to really find its feet,” Mitja explains, “And with growth, a lot of challenges presented themselves. The main one was how to keep the services boutique and tailored to each group while we and the sizes of the groups we worked with expanded. There is a big difference between organising a trip for a group of ten people and a group of three hundred.” Out of everything they do, to Mitja the “Human to Human Approach” is the most important and is, in his opinion, the company’s primary goal. Each client works personally with a member of staff to organise their holiday down to the finest detail. Irrespective if this takes 200 emails and a hundred phone calls or is organised over a ten-minute chat, every detail is covered.

“Whatever the size of the group, we accommodate for it,” Mitja says, “This is the highest challenge and most important to us, that each and every one of our guests knows without a doubt that they are our most important one.”

CHALLENGES At the start, Goolets faced-off with the same challenges of many businesses. Quandaries like how to market and get clients without any budget, resources or experience in marketing while also running the business and the cruises. “Saying that it was hard would be an understatement,” Mitja says, “We had to find our ways of promoting a product that nobody knew about to groups of people all over the world. It was cheaper than luxury yachts but wasn’t a ‘cheap holiday’ and nobody knew what a gulet was!” But with a lot of hard work and being ultrastubborn and not giving up when it seemed impossible. Relying on mutual support and some good old-fashioned luck. Then combining these

THE TYPICAL GUEST Goolets mostly work with English speaking groups from all over the world. The most clients come from USA, Europe, South Africa, South America, Australia and New Zealand. One of the things that all of these groups share is that they are in search of something special. The classic hotel and villa holidays can get stale after a while, but not everyone has the money to spend 150,000€ on a luxury yacht holiday. However, all of the groups that Goolets work with are looking for something similar to it.

65

things with endless studying and learning and educating. Then taking all of this and adding discipline and near super human levels of optimism it all worked out.

building,” Mitja says, “We also have a wide range of other travel agency partners that use our agency as their main go-to partner for gulet cruises. We need to have and keep their trust too.”

“I would say there is really no big secret to success,” Mitja says, “All you need to do is go all in and commit fully, with your full heart, body, soul and all of your brains. Learn. Study. Never give up. And be willing to go in with the realistic idea that for the first 5 years you will not make any money while working 80 hours a week. If you can do that, you know it’s worth it and you will be fine.” This has shaped the business today as everyone involved in Goolets has a real passion for what they are doing. Their devoted marketing team keep up to date with the latest industry news and have a genuine interest in the sector. The commercial department maintain amazing relationships with the gulet owners from all over the world because they have a common passion that they can connect on. The sales team are one of the best in the industry, but not because they’re only good at sales but because they are a team of gulet experts who provide good advice and support to people that are interested.

Goolets tackle this head on. They make a point of networking with people who have more experience than they do, this is why their marketing, sales and customer support are of such a high calibre. The more experienced, trained and supported a staff member is, the better they can look after a customer. There is another useful reason. “We are always trying to learn and study and develop,” Mitja says, “And employing people better than ourselves always gives us the opportunity to do so. You have to connect yourself with the best of everything and implement it into your business.”

“We have a team of amazing people, working on hard projects and trying to have as much fun as possible while doing it,” Mitja says, “If anything, success is an ongoing by product of this.” TRUST AND RELATIONSHIPS Networking and building relationships are a crucial part of Alenka and Mitja’s business. There are a limited number of gulets in the world, so having a good relationship based on trust with owners of these vessels and the qualified professionals that make up the crew is fundamental. But relationship building goes further than this and stitches the entire business together. “An example of this is for a client from the USA, to book a cruise in Turkey, through a company based in Slovenia needs a lot of trust and relationship

Luxury travel, to Mitja, is all about combining “one on one support” which is being able to link clients with attentive personnel, while also implementing the latest technologies to keep things efficient, smoothflowing and secure.

“The more technology that is implemented to allow more of the human element the better,” he says, “As long as everything we do helps people have the best holidays of their life, we should be fine. “

FUTUREPROOFING Keeping the business ready for the future is a daily endeavour, Mitja reveals. One that involves reading the latest blog articles and industry news. Reading books. Attending industry conferences. Talking to other people in the gulet segment and with people from segments that are not as niche to gather ideas and considerations. It’s time consuming but necessary.

PRICE: while the range of luxury goes anywhere from 10.000 €/week and up to 100.000 €/week for groups of 4 and up to 35 people COMPANY ADDRESS: Taborska Cesta 1, 1290 Grosuplje, Slovenia EU

“We are up to date with the latest marketing trends and we do try to implement what makes sense to our company,” he says, “We do try to promote gulet cruises to people that never heard of us before, which is hard, takes a lot of time and is very expensive, but on the long-term basis, we believe it is the way to go.”

MAASAI WANDERINGS Adventure in Tanzania with that “special something.”

Maasai Wanderings and their accommodation partner Nasikia Camps offer a range of safaris and unique Tanzanian experiences all specially designed for the traveler. The kinds of safaris on offer include family and honeymoon safaris, the best rated photo tours which include the opportunity to see wildlife and birdlife in a completely new way and many Zanzibar experiences.

Donna Duggan, who founded the business with her late husband explains that they began the business in 2005. At the time Donna was an Australian nurse and her husband was Tanzanian, so they joined forces to fulfill their dreams and goals to showcase Tanzania and its beauty to the world. Maasai Wanderings has grown and diversified significantly since then, offering tours that last 7 to 10 days and have a unique edge over their competitors. Donna explains that unlike many safari businesses that may have a set-criteria for their tours on which the traveler is merely a guest or passenger, Maasai Wanderings’ tours are very much led by and tailored for the client’s desires. “As long as it is within the laws and permits of the National Parks,” she says, “Clients should feel like it is their safari and that it has been designed especially for them and tailored as such.”

TEAM. EXPERIENCE. PLANNING AND THAT “SPECIAL SOMETHING” This tailoring has to be achieved with absolute adherence to quality of service, value for money and cultural integrity. All of Maasai Wanderings’ itineraries have been meticulously planned

68

This includes training and staff are educated via continuous workshops on how to offer clients optimal service for their personal journeys and adventures. Staff are also handpicked at Maasai Wanderings, not only based on their knowledge and experience but also their personability and natural hospitality from arrival to departure. They know what factors are needed to give an adventure that ‘special something’.

according to careful consideration to the amount of time needed to fully appreciate the adventurous surroundings offered by Tanzania. A big part of this is employing the right people in the team. “Our mountain guides and team were all born in the Kilimanjaro region and therefore possess knowledge of the mountains that cannot be taught,” Donna explains, referring to their understanding of the behaviour of wildlife and patterns of vegetation that mean they can often see things that would otherwise be overlooked. She continues, “We have a very high success rate on the Machame, Rongai and Shira routes on Kilimanjaro and continue to receive praise for our professionalism throughout all our itineraries.”

GIVING BACK Their range of safaris include luxury to budget adventures, working with holiday makers, corporate business people, wildlife adventurers and families. This diversity has given Donna and her team at Maasai Wanderings the opportunity to build many meaningful relationships across Tanzania to help them produce the best experiences for their clients.

For sake of experience-quality as well as travelersafety, the team at Maasai Wanderings often run extra field trip missions to confirm or establish new and improved paths for carrying out the tours. Donna is insistent that every tour itinerary provides the clients with the most enjoyable and culturally educating experience possible.

“My husband was very talented at building relationships and our business was based on that from the start,” Donna reveals, “He was an incredibly humble and social person who enjoyed creating partnerships and relationships with people to learn from them. It was thanks to this

CHALLENGES

that we were able to develop our business to where we are now.”

There are the sorts of ongoing and persistent challenges that a safari company needs to address on a day to day basis, ranging across from operations to logistics. Donna explains that one of the main challenges that they’ve had from the start of setting up their business is continuous rule changes with such things as laws and taxation.

One of the notable things about Maasai Wanderings is what they give back. The business was established not only to provide employment for all those involved in it but to give opportunities to those who otherwise would not have received them.

“It is something we have to keep on top of and we’re very good at doing it,” she says, “It’s a simple matter of learning whatever is required, applying it and being prepared for changes in the future.”

“Our main objectives at Maasai Wanderings is the preservation of culture, wildlife and our goodwill projects,” Donna says, “We have arranged our company in such a way, that we are able to aid in these areas by funding various projects that we have initiated ourselves.”

PHOTO SAFARIS Safari driven tourism is a highly effective way of generating revenue, interest and a social value for the wonders of Africa. Animals, plants and landscape included. Especially those tours that encourage people to take pictures that are more than simply selfies. One of the safaris that could offer a simple but effective way of spreading a sense of value for the natural beauty of the African landscape and the animals and cultures that live there is the Photo Safaris offered by Maasai Wanderings.

FUTUREPROOFING Businesses are having to keep themselves abreast of an increasing list of developments not only in terms of business acumen but new technologies as well. Donna keeps herself up to date like any professional would, by constantly learning and investigating everything that she can regarding her industry. Becoming a renowned expert in her country, the safaris and the hospitality sector. Also, as important to her is keeping an open mind and being able to let ideas evolve as they should. Creativity is a big, big part of the tours offered by Maasai Wanderings. “We also keep abreast of what is trending via social media such as Instagram,” Donna, who spends at least an hour a day on Instagram to keep current, says, “But at the end of the day we are successful because we concentrate on what we are good at which is looking after clients and providing them with a once in a life time experience. Everything else flows naturally and positively from this.”

70

This is the chance to spend a safari working with one of their wildlife photographers and photo tour leaders. These are not only some of the leading professionals in their field but are also just as passionate about wildlife as they are photography. Irrespective of a client’s skill these tours ensure that a traveler will take something more away from the safari than just memories.

Maasai Wanderings is a company based on ideals. Ideals of giving back and supporting local communities. Of learning about and engaging with the wonders of Africa’s natural heritage. Of gaining a value in our hearts for this wonderful place.

“These workshops are run by photo tour leaders who possess all the skills, patience, determination and good humor to provide the best experience for everyone attending,” Donna says.

ADVENTURE ACCESS Adventure tours. Adventures on the Tibetan Plateau. “Mass tourism is China’s dominant tourism approach,” he says, “But in the Tibetan region we are leading with sustainable adventure tourism that is largely driven by local involvement. This is the biggest opportunity because it gives us an even easier job at differentiating ourselves and offering something special.”

Adventure Access is an adventure tour operator on the Tibetan Plateau who specialize in custom built itineraries combining outdoor elements such as hiking, mountain biking, mountaineering and immersive cultural experiences. Including all aspects of this timeless land to create a complete package, the tours include national parks, cultural and religious sites, and Tibetan Homestays.

According to him, others are seeing that it works as well, and this has been the catalyst for significant growth in the past two years when general tourism has declined in the region.

Founded in 2010, Adventure Access were the first foreign owned adventure operator based solely in China. This uniqueness has given them the opportunity to offer a one-of-a-kind perspective to their tours as well as helping them grow a significant reputation in the area. However, China is an incredibly vast country and it has changed significantly over the last 8 years which has opened many opportunities, as Business Founder and main tour leader Brian Glorioso, who has lived in Western China’s Tibetan regions since 2001, explains.

It is a young approach and Brian has eight years’ worth of experience already under his belt, most people in the industry do not understand how to do it well. Taking full advantage of this lead and of the interest in sustained adventure tourism they added a US based component to their business in 2017. “We work primarily with inbound travelers or expats who are living in Asia,” he says, “But it is also good to see that we have a growing number of domestic Chinese clients. I consider this a reflection of our quality, consistency and reputation in this field.”

FRIENDS AND FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS Relationships are at the center of all that Adventure Access does. It is the key piece of their work as the day-to-day success of operations in

72

Eastern Tibet is entirely dependent upon the help they receive from their local friends. These close friends being the business partners that they work with. For new programs to be developed and sustainable development to be nurtured, all of it has to occur within the circle of local relationships that have been built.

This is very important to Brian and he counts himself lucky that he’s able to operate a successful business, in a country that he loves, with his family. “For me, Adventure Access is the true blending of our passions, hobbies, and love for this particular part of the world,” he says, “We love the people here and are working to foster an ecosystem designed around adventure travel and sustainable development. It is a win-win.”

“Relationships are the ‘infrastructure’ of the region,” Brian says.

AMDO OVERLAND EXPERIENCE Currently the main service on offer is the extraordinary Amdo Overland Experience. This combines the best cultural elements of Tibetan farming and nomadic communities with important monastic centers. A client has opportunities for a growing number of experiences involving hiking and biking trails and some of China’s most notable national parts.

Adventure Access is a family business and in addition to their small staff number, Brian’s wife and he play a very involved role in the business. This does mean that their children can grow up being in the outdoors and involved and learning the value of the natural heritage of the country.

to do ourselves. Same goes for web design and development. We just keep them informed of the stories that are taking place and they work with that. The trick is finding the right people to work with and maintaining those key connections.”

CHALLENGES Setting up the business wasn’t straight forward or easy, Brian reveals. As the first foreign invested adventure operator in China, there were major hurdles to overcome. Things like convincing officials, filling out paperwork, repeated applications and many hours on the telephone. He explains it took two years to register the business. And, once registered, it took a great deal of time and effort to gain the trust of the local leaders to operate at a level that could grow extensively over the years.

“Weaving all of the rich experiences of this breathtaking location into a single narrative that the traveler can totally immerse themselves in and become part of the local story is what this experience is all about,” Brian says, adding, “Our guides know how to combine the elements of local encounters with exhilarating adventure to create a seamless flow through some of the most beautiful parts of the Tibetan Plateau.”

“Time and patience were key, and this region is a great place for both!” he says, “We never went away and have simply been around long enough to see our hard work pay off. Paperwork and registering in an office will take time, but you cannot rush things when it comes to earning people’s trust.”

FUTUREPROOFING Working closely with experts is one of the ways that Brian is making his business strong for the future. He isn’t a believer in the saying, “If you want something to be done right, do it yourself,”, instead they include other partners to help them do what is essential while they keep themselves focused on local relationship and client needs.

LIFESTYLE Adventure Access is a business directly related to lifestyle because of their love for the outdoors. It grew organically as a business around this passion. It’s not surprising then that Brian sees a complete difference between travelling and vacationing. “Travel involves exploring something new,” he says, “Vacationing involves pulling away and resting. Our travels are usually quite active as we all love hiking and climbing but we’re lucky because we don’t have to travel to spend time in the outdoors. This means we can be quite selective in our activities and as the family has grown and the kids

“We keep ourselves focused on the relationships at the local level and on operating outdoor cultural experiences for our clients while leaving the rest to the experts,” Brian says, “For example, for marketing, we work with trusted marketing partners to do great work that we wouldn’t be able

decided on this because everywhere he went their name kept popping up. Elaborating on this Brian explains that he’s not thought of as an individual but as part of his family. “We are probably most known as the family that has become a part of the fabric of the Eastern Tibetan plateau,” he says, “This sort of reputation is important to me because it means locally we are trusted, we have been accepted. We have become part of this wonderful, endless land.”

have gotten older we’ve been able to take them on longer trips and do more.”

ADDRESS: China, Sichuan, Chengdu

When not travelling away, one of the keystones to the routine that keeps Brian and his wife energized, fit and healthy are triathlons. Which according to him is a great way to unwind and improve not only a person’s physical condition but their mental focus too.
