JAIL TIME FOR REVIEW FRAUDSTERS By staff writer
TripAdvisor®, the global leader in online review fraud prevention, today commended the result of a pivotal legal ruling in Italy which saw a persistent online review fraudster sentenced to jail.
“We invest a lot in fraud prevention and we’re successful at tackling it – since 2015, we’ve put a stop to the activity of more than 60 different paid review companies worldwide. However, we can only do so much alone, which is why we’re eager to collaborate with regulators and law enforcement authorities to support their prosecutions.”
In one of the first legal cases of its kind, the Criminal Court of Lecce ruled that writing fake reviews using a false identity is criminal conduct under Italian criminal law. The owner of PromoSalento*, which sold fake review packages to hospitality businesses in Italy, was sentenced to nine months in prison and ordered to pay approximately 8,000 Euros in costs and damages. Paid review fraud – when companies or individuals ‘sell’ fake reviews to business owners – is a violation of the law in many jurisdictions, but this is one of the first cases of enforcement resulting in a criminal conviction. TripAdvisor supported the prosecution of PromoSalento as a civil claimant by sharing evidence from its extensive in-house fraud investigations and providing support from its Italian legal counsel. Review fraud is something TripAdvisor takes extremely seriously, employing advanced tracking technology and a dedicated team of investigators to catch paid review companies and prevent them from operating on the site. More information on TripAdvisor’s inhouse investigation into PromoSalento can be found here. TripAdvisor welcomes the opportunity to work with enforcement authorities, including the UK Competition and Markets Authority and the US Federal Trade Commission, to share information and support their efforts to tackle online fake reviews. Brad Young, VP, Associate General Counsel, TripAdvisor, said: “We see this as a landmark ruling for the Internet. Writing fake reviews has always been fraud, but this is the first time we’ve seen someone sent to jail as a result.”
26
“Online reviews play a major role in tourism and consumer purchasing decisions, but it’s important everyone plays by the rules,” said Mr Pascal Lamy, Chairman, World Committee on Tourism Ethics, UNWTO. “Fake reviews clearly contravene the World Committee on Tourism Ethics guidelines, which we published last year to guide the responsible use of ratings and reviews on digital platforms. The recommendations were developed in collaboration with TripAdvisor, Minube and Yelp and we know that industry collaboration has an important role to play in tackling review fraud.”
or individuals offering fake reviews should not engage with them but share that information with TripAdvisor directly at paidreviews@tripadvisor. com. All reports made to our Content Integrity team will be investigated and any information, no matter how minor, can help. TripAdvisor has recently launched a new online information resource where people can learn more about how the company moderates reviews and protects its content. New articles will be added regularly addressing popular topics such as how TripAdvisor moderates reviews, or determines whether a review is biased. The site also features a behind-the-scenes series profiling the vital work of our review fraud investigators, with new investigation cases studies added regularly.
The global travel community is a vital partner in the fight against paid review fraud and evidence shared by business owners approached by paid review companies is particularly valuable. Anyone approached or contacted by companies

LITTLE SEED FIELD Little Seed Field was founded in 2017 by wife and husband team Joanne and Sean Nicholson on their 4th generation working dairy farm. Seven hundred and fifty feet above sea level, south facing and overlooking the Nidderdale valley in the Yorkshire Dales, the landscape and views are simply inspirational. Hence one of the reasons Joanne and Sean jumped at the opportunity to offer accommodation that captured the backdrop of the sun setting over the raw, wild Yorkshire Dales.
They are minimalist but functional, having everything that a guest requires for a luxury visit. Based on a Scandinavian design which Joanne and Sean thought fitted with their landscape perfectly each cabin is also as close as they could get to looking like an Iron Age ‘Round House’ as Little Seed Field is the site of an Iron Age settlement.
WHAT GUESTS CAN EXPECT Relationship building is hugely important to Joanne and Sean. Joanne manages all the bookings, greets almost all of the guests and ensures all the cabins are serviced and maintained. Their guests know them on a first name basis and always know how to contact them should they require anything during their visit.
THE LOCATION The landscape that hosts Little Seed Field has hardly changed for over a century. It still benefits from sweeping, panoramic views of the Yorkshire Dales and Joanne is quick to point out that they are not a manicured holiday park. The cabins are set within the land with the aim to create a site where their guests can feel part of their surroundings and integrated into the wilderness and wildlife. While of course still enjoying the luxury of a memory foam mattress and log burning stove.
Aiming to offer a tailorable service, they often discuss what their clients are looking for when they book directly with them. By selecting a cabin that best suits the purpose of the guest’s trip or arranging bespoke breakfast or arrival hampers they can make sure that the right environment and atmosphere is achieved from the start.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND Little Seed Field is deliberately remote and doesn’t offer wifi. This is part of the specific attraction of this particular glamping site, the opportunity to completely disconnect and reconnect with nature and themselves Also, it’s dark! IN THE NAME OF FELIN GERI MILL
UNITS
ON OFFER
Felin Geri was a successful tourist attraction for many years in the 1980’s. A victim of changing vacationing behaviours and the rise of cheap foreign holidays it closed in 1991. It was reopened by Alan and JaneWorley in June 2016.
Felin Geri offers guests the ideal location to get back to basics with both family and friends. Each safari tent offers the height of luxury (plus private hot tubs!) with every detail lovingly thought out. From superb 400 thread count linen on comfortable beds, to your own kitchen, bathroom and shower. Felin Geri guarantees a peaceful home from home.
Jane reveals that Felin Geri glamping was established to build a successful business within the 24 acres of their new home’s grounds in order to pay for a programme of restoration works of the locally renowned Felin Geri Mill. Bringing the site back into the community, the aim is to eventually grind corn again for historic and educational purposes and potentially use the water wheel as an alternative energy source. The result of their work so far is a peaceful, rural glamping site with beautiful luxury safari lodge tents.

INTERESTING PLANS Jane and her husband have planning permission for 12 safari tents at Felin Geri and intend to build up the business to that level over the next five years. They also have very exciting plans to extend the cafe and bar and convert some of the numerous outbuildings.

BILLESKOV GODS, DENMARK Classic taste, modern styling and a place to keep your bike THE LOCATION Erik is a fan of old manor houses and castles all over Denmark. According to him Funen is the garden of Denmark with more than 100 manor houses to be seen and admired from your bike.
“It has always been a picturesque place for travellers, be them leisure walkers, runners or cyclers,” Erik says, “Cycling in particular has become very popular but it isn’t the only thing to do here.”
The Danish manor house Billeskov has stood since 1577 and is a well-known venue for business conferences, weddings, bed and breakfasts and other important gatherings of professionals and travellers alike. Now, it is also becoming well known for a new project as it’s opened its doors to the Bed and Bike movement. Aimed at providing accommodation for cyclists seeking to take full advantage and explore the famous Bike Island of Denmark. We spoke with CEO Erik Kjær Sørensen regarding this beautiful destination and the new developments.
There are a lot of activities available as well. For gastro tourists there are some brilliant restaurants nearby serving an array of scrumptious culinary choices. For hikers there are many walking trails and for those seeking culture and history Denmark is famous for both. Also, there are a number of highly ranked golf courses in the area for those wanting to swing a club.
“The manor house is still owned by the noble family Wedell,” he explains, “And in 2012 it was rebuilt as a conference centre to provide a useful venue for businesses and meetings. Since then the additions of new accommodations for a variety of different travellers have been made with careful consideration for the elegant and classic style which the Danish country side is famous for.”
THE STAY There are twenty single rooms and ten doubles, all with bathrooms that share a modern style. Added amenities include free WIFI and free parking and in all double rooms there is a kitchen and living area so that guests feel less like they’re staying in a hotel and more that they are staying in a home away from home. For those wishing to get closer to nature, there are three shelters and a log cabin that can be enjoyed outside with the added pleasure of a covered barbecue area and a fireplace to enjoy the nights.
36
“We have a motto that you can sleep however you please,” Erik says, “As long as you sleep well. We’re not a normal hotel and what you see is what you get, Bed and Bike and a little breakfast.”
made in accordance with these rules, which included that they had to have red roof tiles and the building had to be made in black wood. This ensures that everything keeps within the aesthetic of the place.”
CONFERENCES Billeskov is already a well sought-after location for conferences and events. As they have all the background infrastructure required to support an event, they are able to turn them into efficient and stress-free operations. There is a wonderful Scandinavian style used within the rooms which is far more modern than the manor house itself. The rooms are decorated in a minimalistic fashion favouring natural light and open spaces, two things highly sought after by both the modern business and activity travellers.
“Basically, the entire estate, which is the oldfashioned congregation house is able to be rented out for any event or conference,” Erik says, “We offer the framework for each event and the customer fills in the details with the help of the subcontractors they choose to work with.”
“There are rules for rebuilding and renovating old manor houses in Denmark,” Erik explains, “The new buildings that were created in 2012 had to be

STAFF
“Billeskov is perfect for Bike and Bed in Denmark,” Eric says, “We have the space around our manor for cyclists to safely travel and the rooms are all easily accessible from the outside with spacious interiors. There are sheltered pitstops for the bicycles to be stored and for the more expensive bikes we have a special room that can be locked. Best of all the beds and facilities we offer are superb for resting up after several hours of riding.”
“There are just two of us that manage Billeskov,” Erik explains, “We use the latest technology for hotel management as well as relying on the great relationships we have with partners around the tourist business.” For larger events they involve a number of suppliers and support staff to ensure that their reputation for personal and attentive service remains untarnished. This requires a great deal of planning ahead and developing of systems to make sure that things continue to flow smoothly. “For example, 2018 was one of our busiest years,” Erik says, “And because we were very particular to ensure that each and every guest felt looked after and prioritised, every guest did.” He goes on to reveal that there is a trick to making sure everything goes well, be it during the day to day operations of the manor house or during an event, “Let the best people for the job do their job.”
BIKE AND BED Erik explains that he is very excited about the new Bed & Bike project that Billeskov has gotten involved with. Aimed at providing a muchwelcomed stopping point for bicycle lovers
THE ROUTES (BIKE ISLAND AND BALTIC SEA) The Bike-Island route and the Baltic Sea route will take you around Funen and the stunning archipelago. The 515km route takes you along the gorgeous coast, which is lined with towns like pearls on a necklace where you can stop and do some light shopping or have a bite to eat while savouring the view. It also gives you the chance to see and experience the archipelago’s largest islands Langeland and Ærø. The trip alternates between soft, hilly landscapes and charming market towns featuring over one hundred years of history so you may want to take your time.

Similarly, the 900 km long Baltic Sea Route offers a number of the best experiences Denmark has to offer. A large part of the route follows the coast of Funen and gives you the opportunity to experience some of Denmark’s most beautiful scenery. Crossing the island, you will also find signposted cycle routes that connect the towns in a neat intersection of bike-friendly routes.

Polona says, “The farm itself is special. It has eight stone and wood buildings, is surrounded by green meadows and has vast white mountains in the distance. It is a working farm and we have Slovenian animal breeds such as sheep, cows, pigs and chickens. They roam free and guests are encouraged to see and feed them.” The farm also produces highly ecological food and that for guests and visitors local homemade dishes are prepared. “It is important to give our guests a real authentic taste of the area,” she says, “And we believe that food is such an important part of hospitality.”

STAFF
WIFE AND HUSBAND TEAM
Essentially a family business, eight members work alongside three employees on a day to day basis and during summer a number of students are employed to help with the busier times. The employees are all from the nearby village and add to the already powerful family ethos of this business.
Polona was born on the farm and grew up on the Senkova Homestead and has always been determined to get the farm involved in tourism. Having worked in the field herself in marketing, sales and logistics and having studied extensively she is a force to be reckoned with and along with her husband Drejc, the pair have shared some wonderous adventures together.
ACCOMMODATION
For example, together they climbed to the highest peak of Europe, Mont Blanc in 1994, and in 1996 they took part in a local expedition to South America, where Polona reached her height of 5200m. Then in 2007, she skied from the Mont Blanc ram which is 4500m high, and in 2008 from the top of the 4105m high peak Dom de Neige in the Ecrins Mountains. Even with three kids in their family they seem unlikely to slow down.
There are eleven rooms, comprised of four apartments and from July 2019 there will be seven double rooms with modern toilets and bathrooms in all. Outside there are an additional twenty spaces for tents and caravans with power sockets. “We wanted to keep as much old wood in the buildings as possible since we wanted to offer that great wood smell,” Polona says, “It helps create a very nice atmosphere inside by stimulating more of our guest’s senses.”
WHAT GUESTS CAN EXPECT? Building relationships is so important to Polona, and she knows that to properly look after guests you have to take care of the small details and work from there. Immaculate facilities that are clean and presentable, comfortable beds, fabulous showers and that wonderful superb crisp feeling are all part of the baseline standard they keep at Senkova Domacija. “Speaking with our guests is a massive part of what we do,” she adds, “We show them around and we always help them in choosing the right trips or hikes in the region and we are always open to advice and suggestions.”
THE START OF SENKOVA DOMACIJA After the 2008 crisis that hit the economy, Polona decided in the autumn of 2009 that it was time to build the farm into the farmstay she

into a tourist destination and accommodation decades ago,” she reveals, “However, post nationalization of agricultural land at the time meant the idea never came to fruition. We wanted to make sure it worked this time.”
had dreamt of for so long. She decided to study at the Biotechnical Center Naklo, took over the management of the farm, and started the conversion to tourism. Over five years they renewed most of the buildings on the farm, arranged for the entire homestead to be renovated, set up campsites for the camp guests, built a new housekeeping house and prepared plans for the reconstruction of the main Šenkova house.
Drejc, which is short for Andrew, is just as impressive, or even more. He is the youngest son of Anica and Andrej Karničar who were the longstanding caretakers of the Czech hut. Together with his sister and three brothers, he spent his youth closely connected with the hills and skiing. Passing the Alpine Test in 1988 he crowned the first descent from Annapurna’s Himalayan eight-eyelid, which he conquered in 1995 and coauthored with his brother Davo.
Fortunately, this was not the first business venture that the pair of them had worked together on. They had previously set up a tour business in 1997 involving trips to the famous mountain lodge Czech Cottage above Jezersko . The pair of them knew they worked well together. Also, it was important to Polona for another reason.
“He has also crossed the eastern wall of Matterhorn at 4478m,” Polona adds, “Skied several times down Mont Blanc and in our local hills he’s taken on the steep walls of Baba, Dolgi hrbet, Kočna and Grintovec.”
“My great grandfather Josip Virnik, who was a landowner, had laid out plans to convert the farm

Rooms will be arranged on two floors; in the first mansard there will be an apartment for four people and two triple rooms and a common area or conference room. In the second mansard there will be smaller rooms; three double rooms and one apartment for two. Rooms will be ready until the beginning of the main season.
Together with Polona, he is the successor to his father as caretaker of the Czech hut above Jezersko and has been for five years. When not working on the renovation of the Šenkova Homestead and its tourist offering he was directing his wide alpine and skiing skills and pedagogical sense into programs for young people. Now he works as the mayor of Jezersko Municipality.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND This is a hiking area and there are many different levels of hiking on offer; from very easy to very demanding and a number of climbing and cross country skiing routes available. The homestead is 900 meters above sea level and the mountains are 2500 meters high. Bring appropriate clothing and always pack an extra jumper just in case.
2019 In 2019, seven new rooms will be added to the house. These will also be made out of natural materials to ensure that they fit with the expected aesthetic. This forms the next phase of their project and the third building permit will lead them to the reconstruction of the attic part of the old house. The construction will be entirely wooden, there will be roof windows on the southern side, and large light surfaces will be on the east and west side of the lodge. The plan is that from the north guests will not see anything happening in the house while the view of the hills will remain the same.

CHÂTEAU DE MONTASTRUC
While Château de Montastruc has only been opened to guests for the last ten years, the château itself is a listed historical monument and an ancestral family country-house. Current owners are Philippe de Fitte and his wife Ségolène de Martin du Tyrac de Marcellus. In 1998 they initiated major restoration works to lovingly bring the château back to its former glory. The Château is now in superb condition and can accommodate guests for a week or more allowing them to get a full immersion into the antique and aristocratic French country house life-style.
ACCOMMODATION Philippe, his wife and their four children still live at the château but stay well out of the way. Montastruc offers ten bedrooms accommodating up to twenty guests, served by eight bathrooms, three living rooms and a large dining room. There is a library with thousands of books in French and English, a French-billiard room, two pianos, and last but not least a series of very cool underground vaulted rooms for parties. The outside grounds cover fifteen hectares of forest and land reserved for the guests and

and-current history. An opportunity to indulge in gastronomy and wine tasting as Bergerac wines are only five minutes away from Montastruc. It is also a chance to savour the beautiful nature and architecture or to partake in the many activities such as sports and canoeing.
AUTHENTIC STYLE The château de Montastruc has kept almost all of its authentic elements of its long history and the last grand campaign of redecoration was conducted in the early sixteenth century. It is this style that prevails to this day.
PRICE Rental is by the week, Saturday to Saturday, and includes 3 hours of cleaning service per day except Sunday.
Most rooms are typical Louis-XV French 18th century and the careful and loving restoration has reintegrated precious fabrics, antique colours and classic designs. This being said, the baths are contemporary and fit perfectly with the classic ambiance.
Price varies with season, ranging from 6200€ in low season, through 7200€ during mid-season, to 8500€ in high season. Extras can be organized including food supplies logistics, partial or full catering and table service, on demand, at very reasonable cost.
The soul of Montastruc has been preserved as much as the body and skin. Throughout the rooms there can be found18th century and gothic influences with the same materials and fabrics that have been used for centuries, but the modern comfort is contemporary. It’s a matter of respect for the monument and for the visitor that such efforts of authenticity are made.

LOCATION UNIQUENESS Annie is the “gouvernante” in charge of the house, her sister Marie is a wonderful and delicate cook, often seconded only by Annie herself. Alain is a great general care taker and Quentin is the gardener in charge of the estate grounds. The château de Montastruc has a generous soul that speaks to its visitors right away. More than 1500 years of active history have been possible thanks to the love and passion the successive owners and staff have given the place and this is perceived all around. A careful restoration has preserved the essence and spirit of this grand but simple country house while modern comfort was built-in. The beautiful south-western Dordogne light enhances the feeling of contentment and this sets Montastruc as a most peaceful retreat. Guests feel as if they are residing in their own home and feel as if all of this history could be theirs.

CHÂTEAU DES BARRIGARDS ACCOMMODATION
Built in 1904, the Château des Barrigards can be found in the heart of Burgundy, between Beaune and Dijon, among vineyards and fields. In 2008, it was fully renovated to its current luxurious standard and has become a highly prized holiday rental for wine and art lovers seeking the Burgundy experience. A grand opportunity for someone to enjoy having the run of the Chateau.
There are three bedrooms and four bathrooms. A spacious kitchen, foyer, dining room and a laundry room. The first two bedrooms are located on the second floor and each room has one queensized bed and an en-suite bathroom which is fully equipped with bathtub (see above) and shower. The third bedroom is located on the top floor and has two full sized beds and an en-suite. This particular bedroom also provides a beautiful view of the vineyard and a 14th century chapel. The living room is decorated with 18th century furniture, tapestries, and paintings and includes a working fireplace. The kitchen is fully equipped with a six-burner oven, microwave, dishwasher, toaster and coffee machine. The kitchen table is big enough to seat eight people for casual breakfast, lunch and dinner. If necessary, a larger table is available in the dining room for more elegant occasions. PRICE: High season: From April 27 to November 2: € 1,365 per week.
THE CHÂTEAU The very word “Chateau” speaks of luxury and royalty, of plushness and history which are elements that need to be carefully balanced. For example, at the Château des Barrigards there is a harmony between the atmosphere of a historic location and the finest modern standards.
Low season: Off dates indicated if above: 1, 155 € the week. Obligatory cleaning in addition: 250 € Tourist taxes included
Beautifully decorated and furnished with 18th century paintings and furniture, the Château offers a sophisticated standard that is full of history and secrets. It is perfect for the lovers of art and wine who seek to get lost in a typical French château, or writers seeking inspiration from the palatable atmosphere to be found here, or business travellers wanting to take some time out and enjoy one of their deep stand-alone bathtubs.
Minimum stay: 4 days. EMAIL: barrigards@aol.com
In fact, speaking about the bathtubs, many hotels and residences are judged by the condition of the kitchen and the bathrooms. This kitchen would make any professional chef quite happy and the only problem with the bathrooms is that nobody will want to get out of a bathtub as deep and as inviting as the ones here.

HUACACHINA DESERT LUXURY CAMP Ica Valley, Peru. The Desert Where Silence Sings
“You can say that tourism, adventure and travelling runs in my family,” he says, “My family had a travel agency that was founded in 1995, so by the time I founded this camp in Ica in 2010, I had a very good idea of what needed to be done and what niches were available.”
Many people are drawn to deserts. The vastness and seeming emptiness of those dunes have a genuine effect on people’s perspectives. It’s no wonder why many of the great philosophers in the world spent time in deserts meditating and contemplating the mysteries of the universe. During daylight the land seems to stretch forever and at night, far from any distracting light pollution, the sky becomes alive with the brightest stars floating in a darkness so deep that you could almost swim in it.
Marco’s business was centred around helping connect people to nature and show off the singular beauty of the Ica desert. To achieve this, he chose to combine two fantastic elements of tourism and hospitality, great food and glamping.
HUACICHINA DESERT LUXURY CAMP
GLAMPING. DESERT STYLE
Within the Ica Valley, settled in the middle of the desert, you can find Huacachina Desert Luxury Camp. Surrounded by dunes, palms and huarangos trees, it is an ideal place for rest and relaxation. We spoke with founder Marco Granda about his business and what has made the Huacachina Desert Luxury Camp such an awe-inspiring destination to visit.
Marco explains that there is a sensuous element to glamping which is one of the major attractions of any glamping site. Glampers love seeing, hearing and feeling where they are staying and Huacachina Desert Luxury Camp offers something really special in this regard.
50
WHAT GUESTS CAN EXPECT?
At the camp, the guest inevitably feels like they’re in a different world because things are always different in a desert. For instance, the sand is always shifting underfoot and can dramatically change temperature depending on the time of day or the weather. Even the sounds of a fire are different here, especially when it is the only sound and the only light for miles in any direction. This creates the stage for the perfect dining and glamping experience. Combining delicious food, great cocktails and good company with the best in safari style tents.
Stays usually last a single night and can form part of a larger tour of the area. Generally starting in the AM/PM of the first day guests are treated to the activities of the desert. These include a personalised tour of the Laguna de Huacachina lagoon, opportunities to learn how to sandboard and sandcart rides across the dunes. In the evening after guests are transferred to the camp they are met with refreshing drinks and cocktails while the chef prepares an exquisite meal based on Parrilla. This delicious meal is then enjoyed with an exquisite bottle of wine.
“If you have never slept in a desert before you couldn’t imagine how different everything sounds,” Marco says, “Many of our guests come from cities around the world and they’re not used to being surrounded on all sides by a natural stillness. After an afternoon of exploring the desert and enjoying the warmth of the sun and an evening of dining, drinking and having a good time everyone sleeps deeper than they have ever slept before.”
The following morning breakfast is prepared and served at 8am and guests are then returned to their hotels to continue their journey. “It is the perfect length for a culinary and unique glamping experience,” Marco says, “It works very well as part of a larger tour of the area.”
A LAND OF SURPRISES
THE TENTS
According to Marco, travellers to the region are always surprised that this desert has its own flourishing agricultural sector. There are fields of asparagus, cotton, grapes and others that yield great crops destined for export to Europe, USA and Asia. In fact, Ica is a land of grapes, where the most precious wines produced in the country come from. It is also the main producer of their grape brandy known as Pisco. Visits can be arranged to the fine wineries that produce the most recognized wines in the south of the country, such as Vista Alegre, Tacama and Ocucaje. Here guests can learn the artisanal and industrial way to prepare these products.
In camp, there are twelve imported Sibley tents, offering a twin, double and triple room. They are 2.20m high and 4.5m wide and furnished with bedding, interior carpets (which are very important to stop sand from getting under the sheets), night stand, lamp and luxurious bedding. Outside the tents there is a bonfire area, a dinner, bar and kitchen area as well as toilet areas for men and women.
“As part of the tour guests also have the opportunity to taste the different varieties of wines and Piscos,” he adds, “And the chance to purchase bottles if they wish to take some home.”
51
And what tour would be complete without a look at the history of the area? During tours to the city guests can visit the Ica Adolfo Bermúdez Jenkinz Regional Museum, which exhibits an interesting collection of archaeological pieces left by ancient pre-Inca civilizations such as textiles, ceramics and mummies.
RELATIONSHIPS Marco does not believe that simply satisfying a guest is enough, he believes you have to impress and amaze them. Therefor the tents, the camping area, the toilets and cooking areas always have to be spotless and presentable. The logistics of getting guests to the location have to be smooth, efficient and planned. And finally, when guests are there they have to be engaged and entertained. “Most of the new guests we have are recommended by previous visitors,” he says, “So building a relationship and making sure they get what they pay for and a lot more and making them feel welcome and at home is a priority.”
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND There are a few things to keep in mind when glamping in the desert. There are no showers available, Marco will be making them available in the future but for now it adds to the beauty of staying a night in the desert. Also, “It is very important to bring sunblock, sunglasses and sun hats,” Marco says, “And also pack at least one jumper and a long pair of trousers. Even during summer time the desert nights can be surprisingly cool.”
2019 “This year we are getting thirty acres of desert to add to our camp and we want to build a permanent area for our tents. This is to reduce the cost of logistics as well as to implement the installation of ablution areas,” Marco reveals, “We also have plans to build a Bora Bora style eco-lodge that is constructed for the desert. This will be a unique project that would fit in very nicely with the aesthetic we already have. These big, creative dreams are easy to have when you’re in Ica, deserts are great for that.” PRICE: US$170.00 American dollars COMPANY ADDRESS: Av. HARMONY GLAMPING & BOUTIQUE HOTEL, TULUM GREEN GLAMPING
Imagine waking up surrounded by beautiful gardens and the sounds of nature, in a magnificently comfortable bed nestled between the white beaches of Tulum and the thick Mayan jungle. This is what the guests of Harmony Glamping Tulum experience every morning.
Investing fully into the glamping approach of leaving little or no footprint to the site, Harmony was built using sustainable materials such as dead wood harvested by Mayan communities, and rock that was harvested from the surrounding land. The perimeter fence was constructed out of rammed earth, and even though some of the walls were built using construction blocks, the owners used a Mayan technique made out of Sascab and sand to coat them.
THE SITE Located in the vibrant town of Tulum, on the grounds of the Green Beat Organic Permaculture Farm, Harmony Glamping is the epitome of luxury jungle glamping. Lovingly built using eco-friendly materials and technology according to the green philosophy that has become the signature of glamping, this offers the unique experience of enjoying the jungle accommodation without sacrificing any of the creature comforts.
Most of the beds and furniture are made out of recycled pallets repurposed so skilfully that you’d never know the difference judging on the comfort. Bio climatic principles were employed when building and orienting the house in a way to get the most sea breeze and northern winds possible. This aids in keeping the rooms cooler and reduces the use of the air conditioner.
With the options of a luxury bell tent, or one of the six magnificent suites which come with AC and private bathrooms, guests are guaranteed a wonderful experience that will leave them utterly spellbound.
During the building process no mature trees were disturbed and the surrounding plants and gardens, which are all native local plants, are fertilized naturally with the use of worm castings and compost from the Green Beat farm.
LOCATION The enigmatic city of Tulum is one of the most exclusive destinations within the Mexican Caribbean, with spectacular white beaches that are still practically untouched. The city has three main areas of interest, the beach, town and the archaeological site. Harmony glamping is located only 5km away from the beach, 4km from the archaeological site and a short 4-minute walk to all the popular cafés and restaurants in town.
Wastewater, both grey and black is treated through a bio digester that enables this water to be reused for underground irrigation for the garden. Creating a completely ecological system that happens in the background. “The commitment to green glamping is important to us,” says owner Xavier Fux, “It is important to us that should we ever leave these sites, that we leave them in a better condition than when we arrived. This is sustainability that works.” PRICE: see website TELEPHONE: +52 (984) 8712576 WEBSITE: www. harmonyglampingtulum.com/

DRIFTWOOD GLAMPING & BOUTIQUE HOTEL, NOSARA Guiones beach, which is home to many of the finest cafés and restaurants. This and some of the best waves in Costa Rica for beginners and experienced surfers alike.
Comfortably nestled between the beach of Playa Pelada and the lush Guanacaste jungle, is Driftwood Glamping & Boutique Hotel. A completely green, eco-conscious glamping site located only 200 metres from the beach, it stands as one of the finest examples of green glamping done correctly.
The lake, which is the meeting point of Rio Nosara and Rio Montana is a short walk from the hotel entrance and, after a low tide trip across it, will bring you to the playa Nosara surf spot. A hidden gem that is not well known and usually quite quiet.
LOCATION Located in the Playa Pelada neighbourhood of Nosara, which is a tranquil and jungle rich part of town where guests feel close enough to everything while still being able to easily find that personal calm. Driftwood’s particular position, in the lush forest between the mouth of the river Rio Nosara and the empty white sand beach of Playa Pelada, makes it particularly easy to find that secluded serenity.
YOGA, FOOD AND TURTLES
Within the jungle there are many beautiful paths and hike trails that start right at the hotel where guests can spot a number of different animals including monkeys, armadillos, iguanas, birds, raccoons and pisotes. These paths lead to amazing cliffs, a number of private secret beaches and beautiful spots for sunsets.
As far as restaurants Driftwood is walking distance from La Luna, one of Nosara´s top restaurants, and Lagarta Lodge, which has a beautiful restaurant and terrace overlooking the Delta of the Nosara River entering the Pacific Ocean.
GREEN GLAMPING
Nosara being one of the Yoga capitals of the world offers the perfect atmosphere and vibe for wellbeing. Driftwood’s Yoga Shala is situated just below the infinity pool in the middle of the jungle. Practice or meditate surrounded by monkeys, toucans and colourful birds and immerse yourself in the magic of it all.
All of the buildings, lodges and rooms at Driftwood have been built using sustainable materials and local methods. Even the furniture is made from recycled pallets although guests are unable to tell the difference. Nothing is wasted at Driftwood, even the grey water is filtered and used in the garden. And, in the finest example of how environmental building and sustainability can be done without encroaching on the luxury and hospitality, everything happens subtly and in the background. Allowing the guests to bask in a luscious world, teeming with nature, wildlife and comfort.

ALDEA BAMBOO San Pancho Glamping Retreat, Mexico
THE CABINS
The health benefits of returning and living in nature are known to reduce stress, improve breathing and cognitive clarity and generally it just makes people happier. This was the goal when Jaime SĂĄnchez Mohar, an architect, artist and healer founded Aldea Bamboo in San Pancho in 2017.
There are three units, styled in an eco-chic fashion to establish a better connection with nature and all of them are made from natural materials like bamboo, wood and palm. The cabins are on stilts to avoid ground damage and to allow animals to pass underneath, hence the feelings of being in a treehouse and part of the jungle itself.
THE LOCATION
The site is designed in an octagon, taken from sacred geometry patterns that create a peaceful and healing environment. The design of the cabins, which includes a big terrace with Acapulco chairs and an outdoor table, have been thoughtfully arranged for the contemplation of the surroundings i.e. the trees, the palms and the different birds that live in the jungle. The result is a natural, romantic and cosy cabin.
The lodge is located in the jungle of San Pancho. An area filled with trees, big palms and an endless flow of birds. The ocean is close enough that from the cabins guests can hear the sound of the waves and the beach is only a two-minute walk away. Guests aren’t completely cut off though and the main town is only 15 minutes away by foot or 5 minutes by car. San Pancho is a beautiful town with restaurants, stores and a range of its own historic attractions.

WHAT CAN GUESTS EXPECT?
Also, as this is an ecological project, they have dry toilets with a humanure system that uses wood chips to cover waste and works perfectly well and produces natural fertilizer for the trees.
To get the most out of staying at Aldea Bamboo guests need to feel as comfortable as possible so that they can completely relax. To achieve this the relationship between staff and guest has to be looked after. During their stay staff are attentive to their guest’s needs and always ready to help but the personable approach extends well beyond that. Preferably, the guests arrive with a friendship already created.
2019 This year, they will be opening a jacuzzi that will be placed beneath the trees and palms. Adding an additional touch of luxury for their guests and couples. What could be cooler than a hot tub in a jungle?
The moment a guest books in, they are sent a greeting with information on what they will need while they are here. Guests are also given a personalized welcome so that they can ask any questions and also get some recommendations on where to go and what to do in San Pancho.

While it offers the kind of activities that one would expect at a five-star luxury resort such as spa treatments, day activities and fine dining; it is the location and the wonderful ambiance of Lupita Island that makes this a truly unique and special destination.
THE DETAILS Lupita Island is 110 acres in size and is located on Lake Tanganyika in Western Tanzania which is the longest lake in the world, the second oldest and the second deepest. It is a stopping point for many migratory birds and this is where its name Lupita comes from, which means “a place to rest on the way to somewhere else.” Ten lavishly decorated thatched-roof living spaces and two family cottages are now the main buildings on the island and blend in wonderfully with the natural vegetation. All of the villas have been carefully arranged to offer uninterrupted views of the lake and the mountains of which Tanzania is famous for, while providing privacy for the occupants.
We spoke with Belinda Lithgow, one of the directors who saw the creation of the Lupita Island Resort. She relates how prior to the resort Lupita Island was remote, deserted and unused. One of a cluster of islands in Lake Tanganyika and one of the only ones that had not been settled upon or used for fishing.
WHAT TO EXPECT Belinda explains that luckily, Tanzania doesn’t really have a winter period, instead it has dry and wet seasons. So, the weather is warm all year round, “Our busiest times are June, July, August and December into January and February,” she says, “As those do coincide with many holiday times.” Getting to the island is as enjoyable an experience as staying there. The journey is really an extension of the sort of luxury that is making Lupita Island one of the top destinations for executives. Guests normally fly in from Arusha/Serengeti and land at their private airstrip in Kipili where they are met by
“We approached the local government regarding building our resort here,” she explains, “And they were excited about the prospect. It took four years to construct and we have gone to great lengths to

“Lupita Island is a great place to come and recharge, reconnect and enjoy your time. It has been designed for people wanting to escape the cities and the offices to have some real downtime.”
Lupita Island Staff. Then it’s a 10-minute drive to their mainland jetty and then only 10 minutes by speedboat to get to the island. Belinda reveals that they have managed to designate the bay between Lupita and its nearest neighbor as protected. She hopes this will encourage fish populations to grow. Already, snorkeling is a very popular activity where you get the chance to explore the rocks around the island and view the cichlids in the water. There is also kayaking, opportunities to handline fish with the locals from their wooden boat and a chance to explore the surrounding area. There is a lot of historic value in the location, such as the abandoned monastery about 10 minutes from the jetty on the mainland. Swimming is naturally very popular as are the sundowner cruises with cocktails and canapes to end off a busy day. Or maybe you would prefer a fully catered buffet on a deserted beach on one of the other islands?
CHALLENGES The remoteness and the difficulty in transportation of materials and supplies were a challenge when they first began construction for Lupita Island Resort. While construction teams were dealing with that, Belinda was dealing with another challenge. A more community focused one. “It was important to educate the villages and fishermen as to what tourism is all about. How we can work together and learning how to conserve the area while still keeping a good relationship,” she says.
Belinda says that they have a lot of families and groups of friends who come to the island, but they don’t encourage children of seven or under, unless circumstances are discussed beforehand. “Many of the activities are for older groups and may not be suitable for very small children,” she explains,
59
“I personally spoke to the villagers and fishermen and the local government officials,” she says, “We have a positive relationship and in time I think it will go a long way in understanding each other’s needs. This is their home and as such they need to feel respected and heard.”
THE BUSINESS DRIVING BUSINESS TO LUPITA ISLAND Firelight safaris is a tour operation that books safari itineraries for the discerning traveler. And is the business running Lupita Island Resort’s booking and activities. They specialize in finding “out of the way” places, in areas that are not overrun by tourists. The sort of properties that do not pop up first on a Google search.
“Over the years we set up a semi-permanent camp in Serengeti and in Katavi National Park,” Belinda says, “But as the Serengeti and the North became more popular and “safari trips” became more commercialized we decided to close our Serengeti camp as we were not able to sell that unique destination we were promising. This gave us the chance to look for other destinations to sell to our clients.”
TRAINING AND RELATIONSHIPS All the staff at Lupita Island Lodge are trained locally onsite. Covering all aspects of the hospitality industry this education gives many opportunities to the locals. Especially the young people from surrounding fishing villages who have never worked before or done any type of life skills training except at school.
“Hidden and amazing destinations,” Belinda says, “We customize each itinerary working closely with our clients to put together a unique package suited to all their needs. We make sure everything is covered and no request is left unanswered.”
Belinda explains that their commitment to this sort of endeavor helps them build up lasting relationships not only with their staff but with the community. It’s these sorts of relationships that generate the real value that Belinda treasures.
The business has been in operation since 1989. Originally starting with a mobile camp exploring the Northern circuit including Serengeti, where they camped in the Ngorongoro crater and other amazing parks. At that time there were very few tourists and seeing a lion kill was a very private affair. These were the days when the north of Tanzania was a wild, beautiful destination that was tourist free.
“Officials who have come to visit us over the years have become friends,” she says, “Guides who trained with us are now people who I am in contact with in their every day lives. Staff who we trained many years ago and worked for us have gone on to

GOEXPLORE SAFARIS
Aiming to provide unique and life changing experiences for their clients, GoExplore Safaris was established in 2015. Fully owner managed the business helps foster an appreciation for conservation, responsible travel and sustainability while at the same time creating long lasting memories for their customers. It is safe to say that this business was built for all of the right reasons.
In safari accommodation comes in three different styles depending on what the client is looking for. Luxury Safari Tents: Still one of the best ways to get that total safari feeling. All luxury tented safari camps feature spacious canvas rooms with real beds and private, en-suite bathroom facilities. They often have butler/waiter service and dining is comparable with fine restaurants, with three and four course meals benefitting from the best views.
THE SAFARIS
Safari Lodges & Permanent Tented Lodges. These can vary in size and style. Most lodges, especially in Kenya and Tanzania accommodate large numbers of people, with some properties having over twenty rooms. Like hotels, these lodges usually have complete facilities and swimming pools.
With eight locally employed staff each safari can last from three days to a month depending on the client’s ambitions. However, on average their clients normally spend 12-15 days on a safari. These are not general packaged safaris either, GoExplore Safaris are not generalists but are travel specialists with fine-tuned skills. Africa is one of the world’s most remarkable areas and they are committed to showing their clients the very best of it.
Adventure Camping. Not for everyone but lots of fun. Adventure Camping requires guests to assist with general camp duties and is great for groups wanting to get stuck in. Guides provide assistance, but an essential part of this type of safari is

participation. People put up their own tents, assist in meal preparation and generally get involved. It is still camping in its purest terms and this means variable facilities.
This year the owners are launching their foundation ‘GOEXPLORE FOUNDATION’ to give back to the community. This will continue the good work of serving communities and enhance on the work they have been doing with their partners for the last three years.
All of the itineraries are tailor-made according to the amount of time a guest has available for their holiday, what their budget is and where their interests lie. This is a very customer-centric approach.
Their safari4Charity program has already changed the lives of many communities. In the past years, they have been supporting an orphan school in Masaka under this Foundation and have facilitated pupils with much needed scholastic materials and will continue to do so as well as being involved in other community projects.
CUSTOMER SERVICE GoExplore Safaris rely almost exclusively on its past clients for referrals and future business and not any glitzy marketing campaigns. This reliance on word-of-mouth referrals from past clients is one of the major differentiating factors between GoExplore Safaris and others.

Additionally, they place a lot of care and attention into ensuring that each client proposal is perfectly suited to the client’s needs. HAYWARD’S GRAND SAFARI Haywards Grand Safari was founded by Peter Hayward in 1991 and it is the only real choice in bespoke executive level safaris for big groups of over 40 people. It is reminiscent of the bygone days of explorers and great hunters who would embark upon African expeditions with an entourage of a hundred people. Bringing along everything from gun-bearers, hunters and guides to female companions, porters and cooks. Today, there can be up to 200 people on just one of Haywards safaris, enjoying the same spirit of adventure as those pioneers in the 1800s but with far higher standards of luxury.
says, “Our ancestors were opening up regions, putting in towns and farming the rural areas. I am 7th generation in line already and count myself lucky to live in a country that is still dominated by wilderness.” Within this wilderness Peter’s company creates private events and safari functions for a selection of blue chip corporates, European royalty, Hollywood celebrities and even Miss World pageant finalists. This high-end class of executive has been the focus since 1992.
We spoke with Peter Hayward himself and discovered just what goes into the background of this vibrant, exciting business.
A LINEAGE OF ADVENTURERS
“In 1991, when we first started we ran smaller weekend fishing camps,” he recalls, “In ’92, we went into the “mega camp concept”, hosting film crews shooting in Namibia and Botswana.”
There is a scale to Peter Hayward’s story that could rival any tale in Africa. A full quarter of a century before the famous explorer David Livingstone ever set foot in Africa, Peter’s great, great grandfather James Hayward, a 24-year-old husband and father set sail on 7th January 1820 to Algoa Bay, South Africa, aboard The Weymouth. Travelling with him was his wife Mary, their oneyear old child William and James’ two younger brothers William and George. This was hardedged pioneering at its best at a time when the Cape’s Eastern Colonies was a vast wilderness of buffalo herds, elephants and antelope, outlined with packs of wild dogs and the ever present simba, the lions.
Between ’96 and ’99 they perfected their production of these mega camps and began hosting corporates into these regions, “Then by the end of 1999 we launched our all new conceptional camp called Haywards Grand Safari Camp – a concept we have been continuously developing ever since.”
Safari camps were a way of life for the Haywards. And not much has changed. “We have a long family line of ‘outdoors men’ and pioneers within the African context,” Peter
This development, while organic, has been very directed. Peter explains that they were clear about wanting to specialize in the group arena from the outset, offering experiences for larger numbers. “But our presentation, attention to detail and the handling of the individual’s experience is our forte. We offer group safaris yet still provide a personal experience to each group member, this has earned us our five-star status.”
71
THE SAFARIS This is not the sort of safari where you would dos in a sleeping bag and spend the day bouncing about on the roof of a Jeep. This is an entirely different class of safari. The groups that Hayward’s Grand Safaris work with are of the size where the main problem faced is access into pristine wilderness areas. The lodges are too small to cater for groups this size, whereas Haywards allows big groups access to unique and remote wildlife areas by bringing their accommodation with them. Speaking about the exclusivity of their brand, Peter explains, “For us ‘safari’ means taking highly privileged people into highly privileged areas. Our brand of safari is very different from the mill. It is a primary product providing rare and privileged safari events that supersedes the expectations of the clients in every way.”
comes along, and his own four children, work for Hayward Safaris at any given time. And to be a member of the crew, as Peter refers to it, everyone has to be at the top of their game. Extensive training is given, and through an organizing board, each staff member is expected to perform their specific function perfectly. Haywards have an inhouse safari academy for ongoing training and part of this is ongoing development of individual life skills. This is so that their crew members can also become more effective members of society, something that Peter is particularly proud of.
As the Safari sets off across the continent, each location has its own cache of secrets to be discovered. One of the tasks that Hayward’s Safari has to be able to manage is to orientate guests towards an appreciation of the area they are immersed in. Peter reveals that they bring in storytellers to do this, saying, “They are historians in their own right and cover a range of archeological, geological and zoological material in an entertaining and personable fashion.”
And what sorts of qualities does the individual need to possess to be able to work on the Hayward’s Grand Safari? Peter’s first answer is simple: “Anyone who can run a 22-hour shift qualifies.”
An example would be i’Simangaliso, which is the biggest wetland park in Africa set within the Zulu culture, and covering various rhino breeding programmes in Africa. The storytellers use the campfire as their stage and weave their stories to the delight of the guests, answering questions as they go and involving everyone. It is the perfect fireside entertainment.
He elaborates, “The reality is that our crew can handle the punch of long shifts and hard work and do it for extended periods of time. If an individual can deliver and they enjoy the sort of work, we don’t mind where the person originates from. You can’t force someone to have that mindset, but it is an essential mindset to have as we are in the event management industry.”
“Great entertainment doesn’t need to be all glitz and glamour,” Peter says, “We do it on a scale that is grand and that is client specific. But “Grand” could mean privacy and the privilege of being the only people on 3000 hectares of remote, pristine wilderness surrounded by a group of lions, or a herd of elephant which walk through camp as they come to investigate the stories being told. This is the priceless value of what we offer.”
STAYING AHEAD OF THE GAME Hayward’s award-winning approach is no secret and Peter knows that despite the sevengeneration advantage he may have on some competitors that he has to keep his business ahead of the game. Part of this is keeping abreast of the developments in the industry and understanding how everyone will be affected by such things as reduced budgets, cost increases or client’s expectations.
RUNNING A “GRAND” SAFARI BUSINESS Up to 90 staff, dependent on each project as it
72
The company received two international world awards for their Isuzu launch and recently hosted the ruler of Emirates. It’s this diversity that Peter likes about it. These big, high-end, life-changing productions, working with royal family members, or setting up for Dire Straits or Creedence Clearwater Revival on stage, is the space where Peter is most at home.
He explains, “I communicate all the time with people in our world. I like working with true professionals that are on top of their game, and for them to be there they need to know that game inside and out. It’s all part of the formula for success.” He goes on to explain that they are not in the ‘same old, same old’ business and have to constantly be innovating and improving. They have to, because each and every production for a client is unique from top to bottom. To create the best experience, they have to be able to interpret clearly what the client wants.
Pertinently, he says,
“We are not a ‘bed option’ for agents desperate to find enough capacity for their big group. We are in the business of creation.”
“Every client is individual, and we have never had two jobs remotely similar over the past 20 years,” Peter says, “We don’t use templates, irrespective of what the event is be it a 21st or a 60th birthday party, a wedding or the launch of the Ferrari 458, Landrover of the BMW X5. Everything is original from start to finish.”
