Editors note

This month we featured the most adventurous businesses and people who are combining adrenaline with sublime sightseeing. We also highlighted the suppliers behind the glamping industry including an interview with the operators of the Glamping Show. We looked at how the ASSC is protecting the Scottish selfcatering industry and we touched on some of the best places to travel to during your winter break. We interviewed the woman behind the smooth running of South Africa’s busiest airport and some of the biggest names in travel. We even looked at how Dublin is celebrating their beloved son of Halloween during the Bram Stoker Festival later this month. Why? Because it is what we love doing. Speaking of things that we love doing, did you know that the team behind The Lost Executive and The Logbook are mostly digital nomads? Including myself, we have forsaken the office life and chosen to spend our time travelling and seeing what this glorious world has to offer. We are proving, every month that you don’t need to be office based to run a successful business and that indeed, the freer you are the better your work can be. If you are a digital nomad and would like to get in touch to see what we’re doing and how to be involved. Drop us a line.

AFRICA’S BUSIEST AIRPORT Audience with Bongiwe Pityi By Donnie Rust

In a recent article, The Lost Executive looked at what new developments were taking shape within Africa’s busiest international airport. Today, we look at what it takes to manage it.

key stakeholders within the airport community. I also need to communicate clearly with various levels of government and I want to position this airport, through business and route development opportunities, as a key aviation hub that is focused on connectivity both locally, regionally and also internationally.

Ms. Pityi joined ACSA in August 2000 and her 17-year record in the aviation industry began in a management role within the landscape of landside and car park operations at Joburg International. She progressed to being the Assistant GM of Durban International, then King Shaka Airport, San Paulo Brazil and finally, she came to O.R Tambo International Airport in 2014, where she has remained firmly in charge ever since.

BUSY. IT SOUNDS BUSY. WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL DAY LIKE? Typically, I start working as early as 5am on issues that may need my urgent attention, even before the workday begins. With an extensive key stakeholder community to engage on a routine basis, I find myself in strategic meetings from early in the morning through to sometimes very late at night. Should there be any issues and/or incidences that may occur during my already busy day, then my objective is to prioritise any such issues as a matter of urgency. My typical day does

2017 MARKED 100 YEARS SINCE THE BIRTH OF OLIVER TAMBO. HOW DID THE CELEBRATION GO?

not keep to standard office hours. I am expected to be on hand to deal with any eventuality that may impact on airport operations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We were and are still truly humbled by this honour. On the 19th October 2017, O.R. Tambo International Airport was the proud host of the historic milestone and a life-sized bronze statue of the struggle stalwart Oliver Reginald Tambo was unveiled at the International Arrivals Hall. The statue unveiling formed part of the O.R. Tambo Centenary celebrations, under the theme, “The Life and Legacy of O.R. Tambo”, which ran until the end of 2017.

EFFICIENCY MUST BE IMPORTANT, SO WHAT PROGRAMMES ARE BEING IMPLEMENTED TO MAKE THE LIVES OF SOUTH AFRICANS AND INTERNATIONAL VISITORS WHO USE O.R TAMBO INTERNATIONAL PASSENGERS EASIER? Many things. There is a long list. In part, my team and I have instigated rewards and recognition programmes to offer opportunities for SMEs. We work with key governmental departments to prevent the transmission and outbreak of infectious diseases and maintain security and we subscribe to the ACIs Airport Service Quality (ASQ), which is a world-renowned and globally established benchmarking programme measuring passengers’ satisfaction whilst they are travelling through our airport. We are also piloting smart security, which is one of the key projects that will, in the future, create a seamless, less-intrusive and customer-centric approach to security processing.

The location of the statue is highly significant, as it was to this airport that Oliver Reginald Tambo returned in 1990, after 30 years in exile, finally to be greeted by his own people. He dedicated his life to fighting against apartheid on an international scale and laid the foundation for a free and democratic South Africa. Speaking at the official event to mark the unveiling, Dali Tambo, son of the late Oliver Reginald Tambo, thanked the management team for supporting the inherent need for the airport

An Aerotropolis is a city that is built around an airport, offering businesses speedy connectivity to their suppliers, customers and enterprise partners both nationally and internationally. It is a new urban format currently developing around many large airports. The Aerotropolis project is one of the flagship projects of the City of Ekurhuleni, which is poised to become the first Aerotropolis in Africa.

to bear his name and for hosting the statue as a key part of South Africa’s heritage. The symbolism of the statue greeting travellers as they land on South African soil means that his name and image will not be forgotten by future generations. As soon as the statue was unveiled, many airport users were already queuing for their moment to embrace the icon and take photos with him. As a strategic asset that connects Africa to the world, we are truly proud to both bear the name and have the statue of such a great legend located within out International Arrivals Hall.

STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE OF OR TAMBO Being the busiest airport on the continent, thanks to attracting approximately 21 million passengers in 2017, means that we are able to connect people through aviation. We are contributing to our economy, as passengers who fly, do so for a myriad of reasons; work, business opportunities, family and/or personal reasons etc. Connectivity through technology is what contributes to the stimulation of our economy.

HOW MANY COMMUTERS USED THE AIRPORT IN THE LAST FINANCIAL YEAR? Approximately 21 million passengers passed through the O.R Tambo International Airport over the past financial year.

HOW MANY AIRLINE COMPANIES ARE CURRENTLY HOUSED AT OR TAMBO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, BOTH DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL?

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE WORLD OF AVIATION? The speed at which things are needed to be done and what aviation connectivity can do for our country. This is a very fast-paced environment. The passion of the people in this industry is what drives me and my work as a leader is so fulfilling and rewarding in that I have a sense of creating a true legacy.

We have 50 airlines that operate out of the airport. We’ve also implemented a variety of airport ambiance initiatives to improve passenger experience. These include silent airport movements, smart security and engagements with the Department of Home Affairs to increase staffing levels at Immigration and Passport Control.

WHAT IS BEING DONE AT OR TAMBO TO ENSURE THAT GOVERNANCE IS TRANSPARENT AND EFFECTIVE?

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT AVIATION AND AIRPORTS IN THE COUNTRY?

As OR Tambo we align and subscribe to Airport Company South Africa’s principles to apply sound governance and remain accountable, in order to reflect our stance as a responsible corporate citizen. AT OR Tambo we subscribe to the principles of the King Code on Corporate Governance for South Africa 2016 in our approach to ethical and accountable governance. This supports our desire to be transparent and adaptable to remain fit for purpose in all of our dealings. This can be seen in our comprehensive ethics value drive programme and strong continuous monitoring of our environment. This is supported by our anonymous tip-off line that the community can call, at any time, to assist us as an organisation to remain accountable.

It remains a significant contributor to our economy. Research also informs us that countries that invest in inter-modal transport, which includes aviation, attract significant Foreign Direct Investment. It also therefore remains a critical employer of people. As the GM for O.R. Tambo, leading strategic discussions with the Ekurhuleni Municipality on the concept of Aerotropolis is now an immediate focus for me, as well as my team, as the success of this project will be built around OR Tambo. We are very excited about what this project can do for our country, if executed effectively. We also have every confidence in the Ekurhuleni Municipality and Gauteng Province as we work collaboratively and in partnership to turn this Aerotropolis Concept into a reality.

HOW IS THE AIRPORT BENEFITTING/ EMPOWERING SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES?

Brazil for the 2014 World Cup. I spent two and half years in Brazil working on this project, which did prove very challenging at times but ultimately, it resulted in it being a major success for me the team assigned to the project as well.

The airport is empowering the different communities in and around its precinct through a variety of interventions, actioned through an effective Socio-economic Development framework focusing on education, environment, mobility and disability.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES OF HOLDING THIS ROLE? The success of the role is inextricably linked to how one manages and leads people. This can become a major challenge if not managed appropriately. I have come to accept that the best and most effective way of getting things done is to provide people with the opportunity to excel.

WHAT MAKES YOU PROUD? ACSA has taken important steps in addressing gender and racial prejudice, especially in the past five to eight years, however more needs to be done. Having said this, the organisation has provided me with many opportunities for growth and development. It has offered me an opportunity to lead the relocation of Durban International to King Shaka International as well as lead the Operational Readiness team, for a new set-up of a semi-private terminal in Sao Paulo,

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE JOB? The fact that each day presents its own set of challenges and rewards. Also, the fact that it is a very fast-paced environment, which requires intense focus on a routine, sustained basis.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SELF-CATERING INDUSTRY TO SCOTLAND A look at the assc By staff writer

and promote the interests of all self-catering accommodation businesses in Scotland. As the company is owned by the membership its objectives revolve around their needs. Within its list of priorities are such aspects as establishing, supporting and promoting the quality standards for self-catering accommodations premises and businesses, to represent the interests of its members and advise them on operation methods and to assist in marketing and profitability. To negotiate special terms with suppliers for purchases and to advise on sources of supply. And finally, to promote the image of self-caterers in Scotland in a transparent and suitable manner.

In Scotland, the traditional short-term rental sector continues to make a positive impact on the Scottish economy. Generating in excess of ÂŁ732 million a year, professional short-term rentals are a major player in the economic activity within the country. Scotland is a country with significant historic, natural and cultural diversity to offer and the ASSC are working tirelessly to promote and protect this industry. Led by Chief Executive Fiona Campbell, the ASSC is the leading source of knowledge on shortterm rental and holiday homes in Scotland and the only trade body representing the interests of the sector. The ASSC supports high and consistent standards in self-catering, and a firstclass experience for visitors and guests. It is led, managed and inspired by the people who own and run holiday cottages throughout Scotland. Membership is around 650, representing about 7,000 properties across Scotland.

THE ASSC CONFERENCE Attracting some of the most important businesses supporting the self-catering sector, the ASSC Annual Conference and Exhibition is the only major event aimed directly at the people and businesses providing short-term let and holiday rental accommodation in Scotland.

With the vision to place their members at the forefront of the sector and to represent

Over 300 business owners, property managers, service providers and industry decision makers are expected to attend. It will offer the opportunity to network with other accommodation providers, industry leaders and providers of sector-specific products and services. The main aim is to inspire, motivate and educate to keep everyone on the same page with industry developments.

The 2018 Conference will also be a UK-wide event, attracting fellow self-caterers / shortterm rental operators, suppliers and industry representatives from all over the United Kingdom. Held on Tuesday, 30th October 2018, at the Hilton Glasgow. This year there is a strong focus on The Business of Self-Catering, gleaning essential insights into future developments in the sector; drawing on the expertise and knowledge of UK-wide experts; understanding the challenges being faced in different parts of the country and offering the opportunity to take away valuable and essential practical knowledge from their break-out sessions.

Once again, the Conference will be hosted by Willie Cameron, Director of Visit Loch Ness, Director of Highlands & Islands Tourism Awards and Founding Director of the Cobbs Group. Other notable names that will be appearing will include Xavier Font, Professor of Sustainability

THE GLAMPING SHOW A growing event for a growing industry The Glamping Show (TGS) was created by Swan Events to fill the gap in the trade exhibition world. Before it launched there was no focused and affordable B2B show for the glamping industry. Research conducted by Swan Events had established that brands wanted and required a suitable business platform and the exhibition provides a much-needed annual exposure for the diversifying industry. We spoke with the show’s Exhibition Manager, Daniel Wiseman regarding the importance of the show and what the plans are for next year.

“Planning for September 2019 is already underway,” he says, “As soon as the show breakdown is completed the focus instantly turns to the 12-month critical path of planning the next annual event.”

ORGANISING THE SHOW

“Within 3 years TGS had become the annual highlight in the industry calendar,” Dan says, “Both exhibitors and visitors alike now sign up to attend knowing this is the trade show for glamping in the UK.”

The recently completed 2018 show which ended at the end of September was the 4th edition of The Glamping Show. The exhibition was launched in 2014 and the first show was September 2015. According to Dan by 2017 the show had already doubled in size and further growth was seen this year.

It takes time to organize an event such as The Glamping Show and Dan says there was hardly a gap between the finishing of 2018’s show before planning for next year began.

14

VISITORS AND EXHIBITORS Dan explains that individually he and the Show Team work closely with exhibitors and visitors to ensure they get exactly what they have come to the Show for. He says that for an exhibition to be successful for all involved, the Show team must also work closely with the venue and the official contractors; the invited speakers and trainers who deliver the glamping business focused seminar programme as well as the relevant industry associations like the CLA, the BH&HPA and The Glamping Association. “These relationships are key to an exhibition’s success,” Dan says, “We must understand the visitor and exhibitor needs and what they are coming to the show for. Only then can we deliver on their expectations and deliver a Show they want to be at. Having a trustworthy relationship with the exhibitors is essential to maintaining the business relationship – without them the B2B connections you’d expect at a trade show can’t happen, and that’s the need this Show is built to fulfil. The whole point of the show, and our reason for being, is to provide a quality service for both exhibitors and visitors.”

they experience the potential for their business for themselves,” he says. As a Show that started out with an eye on the horizon of a barely recognized industry (glamping was in its infancy in 2014), The Glamping Show has the most complete set of data and insight on how the industry has grown so far. They are constantly looking to the future to what trends are emerging and what’s next for the industry. During 2018, for example, Dan reveals they have seen an increase in more traditional tourism businesses like hotels, B&Bs and holiday parks looking to create their own glamping offering.

He goes on to explain that it is also critical to maintain the relationships with speakers and industry associations. Alongside their exhibitor line up, these speakers attract visitors who are serious about the industry by providing education on how to set up a new glamping business, how to diversify or how to get more from an already established business.

INDUSTRY CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS A current challenge for the industry from the perspective of glampsite operators is standardization. Glamping can offer many different things, and this can make searching for the right travel experience confusing for the end customer. Right now, including at the 2018 Show where they hosted a seminar on precisely this topic, Dan says they are seeing the industry come together to tackle it.

“It can be a lonely journey as a business owner, but the Show exists to connect them with sources of advice, inspiration and solutions to those worries that are keeping them awake at night,” Dan says.

FUTUREPROOFING. Keeping up to date with the newest developments, challenges in the industry, technologies and ideas is important to the Show Team as the organizers of The Glamping Show. Dan says that he maintains his relationships with all their exhibitors throughout the year and works on building new ones with potential future exhibitors. He also visits other exhibitions to find new ideas and new perspectives to try out. “It is quite usual to meet a future exhibitor for the first time as a regular attendee to the Show, where

15

In terms of digital growth strategy, Dan highlights that they believe in working collaboratively with their exhibitors as they’re the ones bringing the products and services that the visitors want to see.

“Work is already underway to propose recognition and standardization guidelines that categorise glamping sites, allowing operators to figure out where they fit and how to talk to their customers about it.” He says.

“Our job is to create a digital as well as the face to face platforms for their beautifully made, innovative products to shine out to a receptive audience.” Dan says.

SPREADING THE WORD AND SOCIALS During the run up to the Show each year Dan explains that they spend somewhere between 10-20 hours per week on creating social media content. This includes engaging with their audiences on social media as it is a direct and fast way to communicate. “We’re active on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram,” Dan says, “For 2018 we’ve been really building our Instagram presence: glamping is all about glamour and luxury and Instagram allows us to capture that perfectly with stunning photographs and Instagram stories.”

PLASTIC SOLUTIONS The Tuffest Tanks Available for waste storage and collection Glampsan t/a Plastic Solutions (Aldridge) Limited Interview: GM Jonathan Trelfa A regular exhibitor at glamping and hospitality shows, Plastic Solutions is a leading UK manufacturer of plastic tanks for the capture and holding of toilet waste from outdoor structures. While this includes toilet blocks and site welfare facilities, it is the company’s involvement in the glamping industry, especially glamping pods, shepherd huts and log cabins that is gaining a lot of attention.

Specialising foremost in the provision of tanks from 500 to 30,000 litres for above and below ground, the company also provides a range of complementary products. These include sewage lifting stations, waste pumps, rainwater harvesting tanks, sewage treatment plants, cesspool tanks and water pressurisation and pumping solutions. This “one stop shop” opportunity has proven very popular with site owners seeking to compartmentalise the essentials for their set up.

While glamping can be a very personal and bespoke enterprise, there is one area where standards cannot be lowered and that is how a site handles waste. Not every site is able to lay down reliable plumbing to and from the individual sites and so rely on storage tanks. Not only do these have to be completely reliable they also need to be discrete as to not disrupt the “atmosphere” promised by glamping. We spoke with Plastic Solutions General Manager Jonathan Trelfa regarding how his business has provided solutions to this essential and delicate matter. “We specialise in providing products and services for an area that no-one really wants to talk about,” he says, “But site owners have to understand and control this particular part of their business and this is where we come into it, offering expertise and pioneering products that have been robustly tested.”

“One of our major product lines is the marketleading Tuff Tank,” he says, “This is an above ground, flat, low-profile waste holding tank perfectly suited to the glamping environment because of its ease of use and low environmental impact.”

THE TUFFEST TANK The glamping industry is one driven by unique experiences in unique locations. With every site striving to offer something that other sites do not, the challenges that site owners will be facing in the future in terms of their waste management infrastructure are only going to be more interesting. So, in a way, you could say that Plastic Solutions’ latest offering is actively encouraging this by being by far the most reliable tank of its kind on the market.

17

LEADING BY EXPERIENCE

Jonathan explains, “The Tuff Tank started its life in the construction industry, collecting waste from toilet blocks, showers and sinks on the huge number of construction sites where no mains sewage facilities are available.”

Jonathan Trelfa is a veteran of the portable sanitation industry and has over 25 yearsexperience under his belt. He was the managing director of Europe between 1991-2008 for a toilet manufacturing company and a manufacturer of ground and surface water monitoring equipment from 2011-2014. It was March 2014 when he decided to take up the challenge of driving Plastic Solutions forward.

“And in actual fact,” he continues, “Whether you have a building site toilet or a glamping hut with an inbuilt toilet and shower, the same “waste product” is ultimately created either by users or by guests. Even if there is no convenient mains sewage line nearby, you still have to control and collect the waste.”

“I’ve known the business owners since I advised and helped them start their toilet rental business in 1994,” he says, “That business is still running successfully today. The company was one of my favourite customers up to the point I left that industry in 2008. When the owners were looking to fill the GM role they asked me to come along for a cup of coffee and a chat: I was looking to do something different at that time. It seemed like a very good fit for both sides.” They started in 2010 and made steady progress until 2014 at which point they developed a range of new products and brought in a focussed business and marketing plan. Since then they have tripled their turnover in the construction industry. It was soon after that they recognized that there are a wide range of industries and sectors that could benefit from their services and products.

Cue the Tuff Tank. This 500, 750 and 1000-gallon plastic holding tank and its smaller counterpart, the Mini Tuff Tank (160 gallons) are constructed from robust polyethylene and are easy to deliver and position.

In 2017, as they were outgrowing their old site they purchased new premises outright and after some essential refurbishment moved in early in 2018. According to Jonathan their growth plans have also meant the laying on of extra production tooling to keep up with demand and the employment of further staff in sales and warehousing.

Their flexible, low profile and lightweight design means they are ideally suited to the changing needs of the leisure sector. As sites grow and units are moved the Tuff Tank can move easily with them without risk of damage. At just 110 kilograms when empty, four men can easily move it. Now on the fourth generation, Tuff Tanks were designed to meet the ever-changing needs of portable sanitation suppliers, caravanners, campers and glampers. They are a more reliable, easier-to-move and cost-effective alternative to the old-fashioned steel waste tanks. Unlike steel, this product will not corrode and will always appear fresh and hygienic. In addition, this product features inbuilt lifting handles and access hatches and ports which are fully sealable against odours and spillage.

18

REVIEW

THE REAL SERVICES BEHIND PLASTIC SOLUTIONS Even with Tuff Tank being released and their other products leaving the shelves as fast as they can be put on them, when asked about what the core services of Plastic Solutions were, Jonathan didn’t even mention the pioneering products he has become so well associated with. “It’s four things,” he explains, “Our strong customer service, our complete understanding of the industry, excellent business ethics and going the extra mile for our customers.” Glamping guests are spending their hard-earned money to stay “off grid” but expect to have the same comforts as they would at home. Any site owner knows the importance of hot and cold running water, a shower and flushing toilets. And how important it is that guests be completely oblivious to where things go after the flush.

RELATIONSHIP BUILDING Jonathan has kept in contact with both old employers and customers over the years. Fondly remembering when his first employer took him out at 4am on a freezing German morning to go clean a toilet as part of his induction! “It didn’t hurt the friendship,” he remarks, “After all, if you’re going to advise customers on how to get involved in portable toilets, you need to be able to talk about all aspects of the business. You have to be genuine and committed to selling ethically.”

FUTUREPROOFING On the technology front Plastic Solutions have invested heavily over the last year and a half in software to aid their sales and customer support staff. Jonathan explains that throughout his working life he’s always been agitated if a ringing phone wasn’t picked up within three rings. To make this possible he created tools and the environment so that their staff don’t get bogged down by too much tech.

Glampsan (T.A Plastic Solutions) may only cover one part of many needed for the complete glamping experience, but it is one of the most important parts and they apply themselves to it fully.

“It’s also clear that we are in the age where customers most readily search the internet for what they want rather than Yellow Pages,” he says, “So we’ve made our websites clear and simple to use. And, on the trending topics front, we’ve recognised the need for a suite of products for the glamping industry: a suite of products that our competitors didn’t really consider.”

ASTECtherm Indoor heating. Finally, an energy efficient solution SUMMARY

ASTECTHERM

Recently exhibiting at The Glamping Show, ASTECtherm demonstrated conclusively that indoor heating has really been taken up a notch. In Europe and especially in the UK, glamping sites may or may not be able to open during the winter due to their heating. Traditional indoor heating can prove to be too costly to install, and in some cases too hazardous as well. It is within this niche that ASTECtherm has set itself.

So how does it work? Martin explains that it was originally designed as a low-energy solution for heating houses. The revolutionary infrared radiant heating system runs on extra-low voltage electrical current, making it very economical and safe to use. Once installed, ASTECtherm heating systems are concealed within the fabric of the building allowing for greater wall space and a premium quality interior finish. ASTECtherm heating films can be installed underfloor or plastered into the ceiling or walls, depending on your requirements.

Head of Operations Martin Weaver says, “ASTECtherm is the ideal heating system to provide year-round heating. Because it’s very energy and space efficient it’s perfect for glamping pods and garden rooms.”

“ASTECtherm works by emitting FAR-infrared which directly heats the people and surfaces within the room,” Martin reveals, “While most conventional heating systems heat the air. This isn’t an efficient way of heating as it creates a lot of wasted heat which directly impacts the wallet.”

THE BENEFITS Efficiency, this is a low-energy radiant heating system that uses infrared technology to directly heat up people and objects instead of the air, the heating material is a patented nanofiber fleece which is highly efficient at transferring electricity directly into heat. This means less money spent on running costs. Space and safety, it’s unobtrusive and easily concealed and operates at a low surface temperature. It also creates minimal movement of allergens in the air and reduces condensation and mildew. Convenience, low maintenance. Unlike conventional heating which can become unreliable if overused, ASTECtherm is low maintenance. THE BUSINESS

The Rotunda Roundhouses can also include kitchen and bathroom units. These are designed ahead of time and keep with the circular, curving feel of the building, radiating outwards in an arc. Additionally, the majority of their clients opt for a veranda to enhance the entryway and to provide a shelter for outdoor seating or storage.

Gemma Roe created her first Rotunda in 2011 while pregnant with her first child. With a background in spatial design Gemma wanted to create a truly sustainable structure that would enhance human well-being. It also offered an inspiring alternative to the generic modular boxes available on the market at the time. Drawing on inspiration from the curves in nature and the Neolithic and Iron Age Roundhouses the buildings have proved to be a hit with glamping site owners across the UK and Europe.

Timber-framed Rotunda buildings are installed in various sizes; from the small (2 person) 4m diameter garden office to a 12m diameter educational building. These buildings can be extended, connected and configured to create an almost infinite number of unique configurations; perfectly suited to the client’s particular project and lifestyle.

BUILD WITH HUBS Building solution. Build a dome in an hour. SUMMARY Founded in 2014 as a Kickstarter campaign where over 400 backers pledged over £41k to get the business off the ground, Build with Hubs have created a new and exciting way of building for the glamping, camping and DIY industry. What has made them so popular is how simple they make erecting bespoke tent structures. The Hubs are clever snap together connectors that make durable geodesic domes fun, easy and quick to build. Once the balls are screwed onto the sticks (of the right lengths) two people could easily build a dome in an hour. Making this perfect not only for serious site owners but also if you’re making a hideaway in the garden. After many years working in their respective fields they were interested in the challenge of designing and creating a physical product, and learning about the process from beginning to end.

THE FOUNDERS Chris Jordan and Mike Paisley founded the business. Chris is a physicist at heart, and was a technical web developer by trade, but also very much a hands-on problem solver, with a love of engineering and mechanics.

OPPORTUNITIES TO INNOVATE. THE INSPIRATION. Hubs began when Chris purchased a small 3D printer around the same time as he built a geodesic dome on his allotment using old chestnut fence pails, metal eyelets, twine, lots of glue and a big jig! It was beautiful structure but hard and time

Mike was a Creative Director at a Londonbased brand and design consultants, winning a few awards along the way, but curious to tackle broader challenges.

After much trial and error, and many 3d printed iterations, the Hub design was born. Keen to keep things UK-based, the hubs and ball connectors are injection moulded on the South Coast in the UK, whilst the accompanying metal work is sourced from a UK supplier. The kits themselves are compiled and packed-up in house.

2018/2019 New products and services are also being added for the new year. These include greenhouse covers and garden sails that are perfect for creating a shaded spot as an addition to the dome. They are also working on an education pack, with lesson plans linking to the National Curriculum, to enable teachers to use the kits for multiple age groups. There is a lot of interest in the educational value of the Hubs as the applications continue to grow.

GUIDANCE One of the definite beauties of Building With Hubs is that every design is unique depending on the materials used. They have a straightforward online “stick guide” which enables everyone to quickly and easily calculate the stick lengths that will be needed to create the dome size they want. There is also a help site with further ideas and information on different approaches. If that isn’t enough, they’ll even speak to customers to discuss what they’re looking to create.

Considering that their start is seeded in the support of early customers there is a value on relationships that is at the core of the business. The customers are very much part of the team and it is important to Build With Hubs that there is a strong, open and transparent relationship, one that encourages feedback and communication. They’ve loved seeing the domes that buyers make and they share the images that buyers send in across social media channels with the hashtag #domedone.

THE IDEALS According to Stephanie, it took over a year of research to get started. This included research on cotton supply chains, sourcing options, design development and developing specifications for their products. This was an important step that Stephanie was determined to complete to ensure that the framework for their supply chain was established from the outset. During this time, Stephanie also completed an MSc in Product Design and Development, it was here that she developed a definition of the business’s underlying principle.

“Our sustainable supply chain …as one which is economically viable, socially just and environmentally sound for all partners involved and at all stages of the supply chain.”

Organic textiles are made from organic cotton or wool, produced using natural processes and without harmful chemicals. SETTLERS STORES Clothing supplier. For when the executives go outdoors. SUMMARY

THE FOUNDERS

Founded in late 2013, Settlers Stores offer a beautifully fashionable clothing range that is perfect for the outdoorsy man or woman. Bringing to mind those old black and white photographs of adventurers and hunters who were always so immaculately dressed. For the modern traveller, the range of products available not only facilitates adventure but inspires it. Co-Founder Zara d’Abo explains.

“Nathalie Sergent and myself founded the company after we met while living in Kenya in the late 90s,” Zara explains, “I was a TV producer working across East and West Africa and Nathalie had a clothing business in Nairobi. It was very successful and sold to the likes of Donna Karan and Barneys in New York as well as the local market.” The pair of them joined forces and wanted to make clothes for people who loved being outdoors but did not want to compromise style for function. Settlers Stores was born. Now in the UK, Zara and Nathalie are still as involved in their brand and their store as they were at the start. This is not merely business as usual, this is a passion. Zara says, “Tweed was our starting point as it is such a brilliantly appropriate fabric for this climate and we make clothes for people to go on safari in a British context whether that is glamping, camping or festivals.”

MANUFACTURING Zara explains that they work with a pair of mills in Scotland to create their clothes, “One on Harris and one in the Borders,” she says, “We design some of the tweeds and get them woven exclusively for us. The batik linings are printed in Holland, and mostly shipped to West Africa, where it is known as Dutch wax.” Interestingly, she points out that as the prints are constantly changing it means that every piece from their collection is effectively a limited edition. Everything is manufactured in the UK. Patterns are designed, and samples created all in the shop and workshop in Frome and they also work with two workshops in London for additional makeups.

INSPIRATION Many of the styles are reinterpretations of design classics such as the box pleat skirt, the lady’s

LUPITA ISLAND RESORT Lake Tanganyika’s remote island paradise LUPITA ISLAND

retain the natural beauty that attracted us to the island in the first place.”

Remote and amazingly beautiful, Lupita Island Resort is a luxurious, mostly private accommodation offering guests the opportunity to relax and enjoy the sublime views of one of the world’s oldest lakes and the Tanzanian mountains. While it offers the kind of activities that one would expect at a five-star luxury resort such as spa treatments, day activities and fine dining; it is the location and the wonderful ambiance of Lupita Island that makes this a truly unique and special destination.

THE DETAILS Lupita Island is 110 acres in size and is located on Lake Tanganyika in Western Tanzania which is the longest lake in the world, the second oldest and the second deepest. It is a stopping point for many migratory birds and this is where its name Lupita comes from, which means “a place to rest on the way to somewhere else.” Ten lavishly decorated thatched-roof living spaces and two family cottages are now the main buildings on the island and blend in wonderfully with the natural vegetation. All of the villas have been carefully arranged to offer uninterrupted views of the lake and the mountains of which Tanzania is famous for, while providing privacy for the occupants.

We spoke with Belinda Lithgow, one of the directors who saw the creation of the Lupita Island Resort. She relates how prior to the resort Lupita Island was remote, deserted and unused. One of a cluster of islands in Lake Tanganyika and one of the only ones that had not been settled upon or used for fishing.

WHAT TO EXPECT Belinda explains that luckily, Tanzania doesn’t really have a winter period, instead it has dry and wet seasons. So, the weather is warm all year round, “Our busiest times are June, July, August and December into January and February,” she says, “As those do coincide with many holiday times.” Getting to the island is as enjoyable an experience as staying there. The journey is really an extension of the sort of luxury that is making Lupita Island one of the top destinations for executives. Guests normally fly in from Arusha/Serengeti and land at their private airstrip in Kipili where they are met by

“We approached the local government regarding building our resort here,” she explains, “And they were excited about the prospect. It took four years to construct and we have gone to great lengths to

“Lupita Island is a great place to come and recharge, reconnect and enjoy your time. It has been designed for people wanting to escape the cities and the offices to have some real downtime.”

Lupita Island Staff. Then it’s a 10-minute drive to their mainland jetty and then only 10 minutes by speedboat to get to the island. Belinda reveals that they have managed to designate the bay between Lupita and its nearest neighbor as protected. She hopes this will encourage fish populations to grow. Already, snorkeling is a very popular activity where you get the chance to explore the rocks around the island and view the cichlids in the water. There is also kayaking, opportunities to handline fish with the locals from their wooden boat and a chance to explore the surrounding area. There is a lot of historic value in the location, such as the abandoned monastery about 10 minutes from the jetty on the mainland. Swimming is naturally very popular as are the sundowner cruises with cocktails and canapes to end off a busy day. Or maybe you would prefer a fully catered buffet on a deserted beach on one of the other islands?

CHALLENGES The remoteness and the difficulty in transportation of materials and supplies were a challenge when they first began construction for Lupita Island Resort. While construction teams were dealing with that, Belinda was dealing with another challenge. A more community focused one.

Belinda says that they have a lot of families and groups of friends who come to the island, but they don’t encourage children of seven or under, unless circumstances are discussed beforehand.

“It was important to educate the villages and fishermen as to what tourism is all about. How we can work together and learning how to conserve the area while still keeping a good relationship,” she says.

“Many of the activities are for older groups and may not be suitable for very small children,” she explains,

43

“I personally spoke to the villagers and fishermen and the local government officials,” she says, “We have a positive relationship and in time I think it will go a long way in understanding each other’s needs. This is their home and as such they need to feel respected and heard.”

THE BUSINESS DRIVING BUSINESS TO LUPITA ISLAND Firelight safaris is a tour operation that books safari itineraries for the discerning traveler. And is the business running Lupita Island Resort’s booking and activities. They specialize in finding “out of the way” places, in areas that are not overrun by tourists. The sort of properties that do not pop up first on a Google search.

“Over the years we set up a semi-permanent camp in Serengeti and in Katavi National Park,” Belinda says, “But as the Serengeti and the North became more popular and “safari trips” became more commercialized we decided to close our Serengeti camp as we were not able to sell that unique destination we were promising. This gave us the chance to look for other destinations to sell to our clients.”

TRAINING AND RELATIONSHIPS All the staff at Lupita Island Lodge are trained locally onsite. Covering all aspects of the hospitality industry this education gives many opportunities to the locals. Especially the young people from surrounding fishing villages who have never worked before or done any type of life skills training except at school.

“Hidden and amazing destinations,” Belinda says, “We customize each itinerary working closely with our clients to put together a unique package suited to all their needs. We make sure everything is covered and no request is left unanswered.”

Belinda explains that their commitment to this sort of endeavor helps them build up lasting relationships not only with their staff but with the community. It’s these sorts of relationships that generate the real value that Belinda treasures.

The business has been in operation since 1989. Originally starting with a mobile camp exploring the Northern circuit including Serengeti, where they camped in the Ngorongoro crater and other amazing parks. At that time there were very few tourists and seeing a lion kill was a very private affair. These were the days when the north of Tanzania was a wild, beautiful destination that was tourist free.

“Officials who have come to visit us over the years have become friends,” she says, “Guides who trained with us are now people who I am in contact with in their every day lives. Staff who we trained many years ago and worked for us have gone on to

BRAM STOKER Dublin’s favourite horror He wrote the most famous gothic horror novel in the world. A piece of fiction that has inspired over a century of films, novelisations, TV programmes, graphic novels, horror stories and endless revamps. He managed to combine historic figures with a mythic monster and create a hallmark of horror that is used as a reference in anything to do with vampires or the undead. And yet what do you actually know about the writer Bram Stoker? As the Bram Stoker Festival in Dublin builds up pace for this year’s festivities, we take a look at the Irishman who created an entire genre of horror. Who was the man behind Dracula?

Nevertheless Bram Stoker did have many noteworthy friends during his early life. In 1878 he married Florence Balcombe, who was a celebrated beauty whose former suitor was none other than Oscar Wilde. The same author who wrote the life-expose-horror Picture of Dorian Grey that also dealt with immortality, humanity and excess. It couldn’t be said that they were friends, but definitely acquaintances and when Oscar Wilde had his grandiose fall from grace, Stoker visited him on the continent. Stoker had always been involved in writing, be it memoirs for his patron and friend Sir Henry Irving, in theatre critiques and in short novels. He wrote The Snakes Pass in 1890 and Dracula in 1897 while he was part of the literary staff of The Daily Telegraph. He also wrote The Lady of The Shroud in 1909 and the Lair of the White Worm in 1911, both horrors. While successful in their own way, they never reached the heights that Dracula did. And even Dracula only became the massive hit it was after his death and almost entirely because of the movies that were made based on it.

HIS FAME WAS THE UNDEAD During his lifetime Bram Stoker was better known for being the personal assistant for the actor Sir Henry Irving and the business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London which Irving owned. Stoker was a theatre critic for the Dublin Evening Mail and it was after he gave a favourable review of Sir Henry Irving’s Hamlet at the Theatre Royal in Dublin that the pair of them met and became friends. He also wrote a non-fiction book entitled The Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland or which we’re sure you’ve never heard of either.

THE SECRETIVE LIFE It has been speculated that as he was a deeply private man that his success as a writer was forestalled by his lack of drive for the limelight. There is even some evidence to demonstrate that he may have been a repressed homosexual who used fiction as an outlet. This has come

46

under scrutiny because in 1912 he demanded imprisonment of all homosexual authors in Britain. At the time, Oscar Wilde was being publicly trialled as a homosexual and Dracula was begun only weeks after his conviction.

A limited number of early tickets will go on sale at 6pm Wednesday 5th September. Final tickets and full programme will be released in late September. One of Dublin’s most anticipated festivals, and now one of its biggest, Bram Stoker Festival returns to celebrate the supernatural, the thrill of Samhain and the legacy of one of Ireland’s most treasured authors this October Bank Holiday Weekend (October 26th - 29th). Brought to you by Dublin City Council and Fáilte Ireland, Bram Stoker Festival today revealed the first of this year’s events. As quietly reclusive as the Count Dracula himself Bram Stoker could very well be an even more interesting character than any he could have found himself. And as a child of Dublin, Halloween in the city is almost dedicated to him.

Fans of film screenings accompanied by live music will love the stunning NYsferatu: Symphony of a Century, directed by Andrea Mastrovito, an animated interpretation of the classic 1922 horror film Nosferatu. Set in present day New York City, it turns the original film on its head, positioning the vampire character as that most contemporary of “outsiders” - an emigrant escaping war and hardships at home only to face economic exploitation, discrimination and xenophobia in their new country. Rich with symbolism and political commentary, the film retells the story of the vampire through the lens of modern-day fears about Islam, immigration, and refugees. The film, which replicates the eerie, flickering shutter effect of early cinema, will be accompanied by a specially commissioned live score by internationally

We’re working with artists and producing events that find inspiration in the life and works of Bram Stoker, his gothic legacy, Dublin’s spectacular Victorian, the supernatural, and Ireland’s Samhain traditions, while also celebrating contemporary and artistic interpretations of his most significant legacy, Dracula.”

Adventurous souls are welcomed to walk deep into the woods under cloak of darkness, at the world premiere of The Night of the Shifting Bog, by the world renowned Loosysmokes. A world where bodies soar in the sky and crash to the ground, swallowed whole awaits. Using the centuries-old trees as their stage, this dark, immersive and atmospheric aerial acrobatics show will enthral and spook in equal measure, as performers whirl and scatter through shadows, flickering projections, pulsing sounds and the audience itself. This specially commissioned new circus/theatre show, taking place in St. Anne’s Park, Clontarf, is based on a passage from The Snake’s Pass, Stoker’s novel set in the boglands of Ireland.

A WORLD OF INSPIRATION By Jerome Smith

a multi-sensory appreciation of new experience. The smells, sights and sounds of different countries come flooding through every one of his brushstrokes, and that’s exactly what he’s going for,

The art world prides itself on promoting the idea that inspiration is all around us, if only we can open our eyes and see it and one man that is definitely not blind to the creativity that the world can inspire is globally-renowned artist, Alexander Mijares.

“I like to see the colours other cultures use and how they use them…the shape of their architecture…the lines of the street art and the way the light hits the stained glass in churches. When you travel, you grow as a person, so as you grow, your mind begins to run wild and mix all that up and for me, new styles are born. Even just a conversation with someone from another country or place can trigger an idea and that could lead to a whole new series or style. You just never know.”

Miami-born Alexander Mijares is a cultural phenomenal both in the art and social media spheres, thanks to his embracing of vibrant hues and eye-catching motifs. When you witness his vivacious creations, there is an undeniable sense of energy and positivity, not to mention a natural nod to the Cuban/Spanish heritage that he comes from, but there’s something else as well: an appreciation of global culture,

With this enthusiastic appreciation for all things new and exciting, it stands to reason that Alexander would seek to travel regularly, in a bid to unlock new levels of creativity and focus but in reality, it is merely a welcome side effect of a much-loved pastime,

“A lot of my inspiration comes from my travels.” Of course! Every piece that he creates invokes images of treasured travel memories and offers up

50

“No matter where I go I always find or make the time to really immerse myself in the local scene and enjoy it. I might have a very specific reason for going where I do, but I always make sure to include two to four days of personal exploration.” Given his credentials as a seasoned traveller, not to mention a savant as to all things culturally stimulating, we wanted to know which attractions Alexander recommends trying to see during any trip. His approach to getting the most from his ventures is nothing short of inspiring, “I try to see absolutely everything, so I usually Google things to see ahead of time. Once I’m at my destination, I’ll buy or rent a bike, cruise around all the sights I’ve planned to visit and then I dive into the cuisine and local bars. I don’t ever really hit the clubs when I travel because I lose so much of the next day sleeping. I’d much rather wake up super early and enjoy the day by doing as much as humanly possible, until I cant move and then rent a movie and pass out.”

“I don’t travel to increase my artistic focus. I have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), so I travel to enjoy myself and, in turn, comes the inspiration. For me to stay focused it requires a lot of effort. Art is supposed to be fun and a fluid notion and for me, inspiration just hits me at random times and I embrace all of it!”

With such a voracious appetite for travel, we wanted to ask about Alexander’s roots. With Cuban and Spanish lineage, he must find it hard to stay away from these cultural hotspots, surely?

As a creative person, travelling is an intrinsic part of Alexander’s life and while it does help to open up new channels of creativity, he has never attributed any level of necessity to it that would seek to diminish the impact, over time, “I have always said that I work to travel, but now, I paint to travel. Travelling the world is definitely something that we are meant to do…or at the very least, what I was born to do. It brings me so much joy! It really does. I like to travel, if I can, at least once a month or more and I always take one long trip each year. I think of these longer excursions as my own adventure trips. I’d rather travel than party at a nightclub. The price of a bottle is a plane ticket and the memories from a trip far exceed that of a night on the town.” Don’t for a second think that this means a solitary or internalised experience for Alexander. Yes, it’s true that he has an incredible grasp on how to make every moment in life count and he might think of nightclub expeditions as money wasted, but he always takes the time to really enjoy his time in other countries,

51

“Yes! I have been to Cuba once and am going back soon, but Spain I have been to at least 20 times! I love it there. I really feel a sense of home when I’m in Spain, for some reason. There’s just a natural warmth that I don’t experience in a lot of places. I love the culture, the food and the way of life. I try to never double up on spots but sometimes I do. If I had to name a specific repeat destination, I have been to Barcelona a lot”

“My trip to the Camino de Santiago was very special. I walked from France to the other end of Spain, during a 2- day adventure. I can honestly say that it was the best experience of my life.”

We got the feeling that Spain is really close to Alexander’s heart and given how Mediterranean in spirit a lot of his pieces are, we wondered if there has been a particularly significant travel experience connected to Spain. If you take a look at his portfolio, we think you’ll get the Spanish vibes in some of his key pieces too and, as expected, Spain has left a very special imprint,

“A camera, phone charger, good walking or running shoes, t-shirt and jeans. With this simple kit, I can travel the world (well, I may add a jacket too, just in case!). The really crucial thing is to always travel with some kind of camera. Personally, I like to capture everything and when I get home later, I analyse all my pictures and begin my brainstorming process to paint!”

As the interview began to trail off to a natural end, we wanted one final dose of inspiration from our newfound travel and art guru, so asked Alexander what he considers to be his travel must-haves,

ADVENTURE ACCESS Adventure tours. Adventures on the Tibetan Plateau. “Mass tourism is China’s dominant tourism approach,” he says, “But in the Tibetan region we are leading with sustainable adventure tourism that is largely driven by local involvement. This is the biggest opportunity because it gives us an even easier job at differentiating ourselves and offering something special.”

Adventure Access is an adventure tour operator on the Tibetan Plateau who specialize in custom built itineraries combining outdoor elements such as hiking, mountain biking, mountaineering and immersive cultural experiences. Including all aspects of this timeless land to create a complete package, the tours include national parks, cultural and religious sites, and Tibetan Homestays.

According to him, others are seeing that it works as well, and this has been the catalyst for significant growth in the past two years when general tourism has declined in the region.

Founded in 2010, Adventure Access were the first foreign owned adventure operator based solely in China. This uniqueness has given them the opportunity to offer a one-of-a-kind perspective to their tours as well as helping them grow a significant reputation in the area. However, China is an incredibly vast country and it has changed significantly over the last 8 years which has opened many opportunities, as Business Founder and main tour leader Brian Glorioso, who has lived in Western China’s Tibetan regions since 2001, explains.

It is a young approach and Brian has eight years’ worth of experience already under his belt, most people in the industry do not understand how to do it well. Taking full advantage of this lead and of the interest in sustained adventure tourism they added a US based component to their business in 2017. “We work primarily with inbound travelers or expats who are living in Asia,” he says, “But it is also good to see that we have a growing number of domestic Chinese clients. I consider this a reflection of our quality, consistency and reputation in this field.”

FRIENDS AND FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS Relationships are at the center of all that Adventure Access does. It is the key piece of their work as the day-to-day success of operations in

56

Eastern Tibet is entirely dependent upon the help they receive from their local friends. These close friends being the business partners that they work with. For new programs to be developed and sustainable development to be nurtured, all of it has to occur within the circle of local relationships that have been built.

This is very important to Brian and he counts himself lucky that he’s able to operate a successful business, in a country that he loves, with his family. “For me, Adventure Access is the true blending of our passions, hobbies, and love for this particular part of the world,” he says, “We love the people here and are working to foster an ecosystem designed around adventure travel and sustainable development. It is a win-win.”

“Relationships are the ‘infrastructure’ of the region,” Brian says.

AMDO OVERLAND EXPERIENCE Currently the main service on offer is the extraordinary Amdo Overland Experience. This combines the best cultural elements of Tibetan farming and nomadic communities with important monastic centers. A client has opportunities for a growing number of experiences involving hiking and biking trails and some of China’s most notable national parts.

Adventure Access is a family business and in addition to their small staff number, Brian’s wife and he play a very involved role in the business. This does mean that their children can grow up being in the outdoors and involved and learning the value of the natural heritage of the country.

57

to do ourselves. Same goes for web design and development. We just keep them informed of the stories that are taking place and they work with that. The trick is finding the right people to work with and maintaining those key connections.”

CHALLENGES Setting up the business wasn’t straight forward or easy, Brian reveals. As the first foreign invested adventure operator in China, there were major hurdles to overcome. Things like convincing officials, filling out paperwork, repeated applications and many hours on the telephone. He explains it took two years to register the business. And, once registered, it took a great deal of time and effort to gain the trust of the local leaders to operate at a level that could grow extensively over the years.

“Weaving all of the rich experiences of this breathtaking location into a single narrative that the traveler can totally immerse themselves in and become part of the local story is what this experience is all about,” Brian says, adding, “Our guides know how to combine the elements of local encounters with exhilarating adventure to create a seamless flow through some of the most beautiful parts of the Tibetan Plateau.”

“Time and patience were key, and this region is a great place for both!” he says, “We never went away and have simply been around long enough to see our hard work pay off. Paperwork and registering in an office will take time, but you cannot rush things when it comes to earning people’s trust.”

FUTUREPROOFING Working closely with experts is one of the ways that Brian is making his business strong for the future. He isn’t a believer in the saying, “If you want something to be done right, do it yourself,”, instead they include other partners to help them do what is essential while they keep themselves focused on local relationship and client needs.

LIFESTYLE Adventure Access is a business directly related to lifestyle because of their love for the outdoors. It grew organically as a business around this passion. It’s not surprising then that Brian sees a complete difference between travelling and vacationing. “Travel involves exploring something new,” he says, “Vacationing involves pulling away and resting. Our travels are usually quite active as we all love hiking and climbing but we’re lucky because we don’t have to travel to spend time in the outdoors. This means we can be quite selective in our activities and as the family has grown and the kids

“We keep ourselves focused on the relationships at the local level and on operating outdoor cultural experiences for our clients while leaving the rest to the experts,” Brian says, “For example, for marketing, we work with trusted marketing partners to do great work that we wouldn’t be able

58

decided on this because everywhere he went their name kept popping up. Elaborating on this Brian explains that he’s not thought of as an individual but as part of his family. “We are probably most known as the family that has become a part of the fabric of the Eastern Tibetan plateau,” he says, “This sort of reputation is important to me because it means locally we are trusted, we have been accepted. We have become part of this wonderful, endless land.”

have gotten older we’ve been able to take them on longer trips and do more.”

ADDRESS: China, Sichuan, Chengdu

When not travelling away, one of the keystones to the routine that keeps Brian and his wife energized, fit and healthy are triathlons. Which according to him is a great way to unwind and improve not only a person’s physical condition but their mental focus too.

ELISOMI TOURS The complete Tanzania experience Providing affordable tailored packages for their clients, Elisomi Tours specialize in identifying the key component that a client or group of clients, are looking for and piecing them together into a smoothly flowing well-orchestrated adventure holiday.

You’ve got to go to Tanzania. If it isn’t on your bucket list, put it at the top. In fact, you might as well start planning your trip right away. While you’re at it make sure that you take full advantage of a company with all the local knowledge. Elisomi Tours is fully owned by Tanzanian locals and incorporated. Offering world class tours across Tanzania and East Africa they work with international clients seeking that “African experience.”

“This could include game safaris, mountain climbing, beach holidays, cultural tours and volunteering packages,” Elisa explains, “We also provide necessary services alongside such as airport transfers, city tours and car rent in Tanzania and East Africa.”

We interviewed the founder Elisa about what the business stands for and offers to international travelers seeking to make lifelong memories.

TANZANIA

“It took almost a year to build up the business,” Elisa explains, “A great deal of time to make sure that it was administratively, legally and logistically well established. As we cater for quite a number of foreign travelers from the likes of USA and the UK, I was adamant that everything had to be perfect to support them.”

Tanzania is the best safari country in Africa. It borders Uganda and Kenya and is famous for its great open plains and abundant wild life. It is equally known for its cultural diversity with over 100 native languages being spoken in a country with a population of 56 million. It is probably best

62

known for one of the dominating features of the African continent and the world at large. The unmissable, towering mountain Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, and the world’s largest terrestrial mammal migration in the Serengeti national park.

are doing everything possible to reduce their footprint. Elisa says, “We strongly advocate for a sustainable living through a number of ways. Thse include minimizing the use of plastic bottles and ensuring our clients stay in lodges and camps that serve organic foods and adhere to proenvironmental behaviour.”

Tanzania contains the largest proportion of the Africa’s great lakes including Lake Victoria which is Africa’s largest lake and Lake Tanganyika which is the continent’s deepest. It also boasts the Kalambo water falls in the south west region of Rukwa and the Zanzibar Archipelago which has been voted one of the most beautiful places in the world (and is one of the largest marine protected areas.)

The aim is to improve the economy, social context and biodiversity of the country. With this in mind, the company also dedicates a part of its earnings to environmental conservation within the local community.

THE ADVENTURES “You don’t simply go on “holiday” in Tanzania,” Elisa explains, “You go on an adventure and we are very good at combining unique experiences and safety together to create a quality adventure.”

It is as if all the colour, diversity and beauty in the world simply overflowed from Tanzania and spread across the globe. “With such a wealth of activities and sites and options to see it all,” Elisa says, “We offer a solution to navigating these selections and providing the service that is right for the client and matches their unique, individual requirements.”

There are several options: NGORONGORO Ngorongoro is a recognized conservation area which means that the whole area is managed for both animals and the local Masai people who graze their cattle there.

ELISOMI TOURS You’re only as good as the people you work with, Elisa points out and the team at Elisomi Tours is no different. They are all qualified tourism management professionals who have been working in the Tanzanian Tourism and conservation industries for many years.

Here you will find the 8th wonder of the world the Ngorongoro Crater, which is the largest unbroken caldera in the world and hosts an abundant diversity of large mammals. The crater walls provide a natural sanctuary for the animals, which means there is plenty to see: lions, elephants, buffalo, rhino, and leopard among others. You have a chance to learn more about the Maasai, this fascinating volcanic landscape, and drive around the rim of the crater itself.

“Our team have the experience to safely create bespoke adventures throughout our country which allow our guests to engage with the richness that Tanzania has to offer in nature, culture and history.” Elisa says. Beyond the immediate team, they also have a comprehensive network of organisations that they have partnered with including hotels, resorts and restaurants all of which offer a unique experience. These partners are scrutinized to ensure that they offer an expected standard of reliability and professionalism and are on the same page with the “above average” customer service that Elisa insists upon.

SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY Elisomi tours understands the importance of building an environmentally focussed culture and

63

SERENGETI SAFARIS The Serengeti plains in the heart of Tanzania are one of the most popular safari destinations in the world. Open landscapes filled with natural flora and fauna in their natural environments. Tours are all vetted to make sure that not only do they offer the best experience in terms of wildlife interaction, but that it is done so in a safe and environmentally conscious manner.

PHOTOGRAPHY SAFARI We live in a “sharing culture” and Elisa reveals that thanks to the prominence and the importance of social media sharing Photography Safaris are ever growing in popularity. Capture the right picture at the right time and you could be a social media hero. Or, if social status isn’t important, you can have a memory captured forever for your own pleasure. These trips feature multiple opportunities for the perfect photograph. From budding enthusiasts to professional photographers. BALLOON SAFARIS Seeing Tanzania from the floating balloon in the sky you get a completely different perspective of the sheer scale of this country and how much of it is dedicated to wild, open lands. The vast Serengeti below, inundated with animals and herds and predators all overlooked by the splendid rise of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the distance. Balloon Safaris has become a firm favourite for many travellers to Tanzania seeking a unique, sublime experience that they could call their own.

WILDEBEEST MIGRATION SAFARI No doubt you’ve seen the wildebeest migration on the Serengeti plains. It is often used in television documentaries to demonstrate the impressive might of Africa and the terrific force of nature. The great wildebeest migration is the largest, enduring wild animal migrations in the world and can include up to a staggering 1.5 million animals! Depending on when, the experiences of this epic herd migration can encapsulate the entire circle of life from calving season to stampedes across rivers and predator killing.

BEYOND SAFARIS Elisa scoffs at the idea that safaris would be all that Tanzania could offer. “This country is far, far too interesting to offer just one aspect.” Perhaps a client wishes to climb a mountain? THE MOUNTAINS “There are many towering mountains and impressive dormant volcanic peaks,” Elisa reveals, “Tanzania is a must visit destination for hiking and climbing but most hiking and mountain climbing enthusiasts already know that.”

64

This of course includes the imposing Mt. Kilimanjaro which is the tallest free standing mountain in the world and Africa’s highest peak. It stands out of the land with such a looming figure that it makes the surrounding land appear as flat as a table.

And this is not bias. The island of Zanzibar is one of the country’s most visited tourist destinations and with good reason. The immense natural beauty of its scenic beaches has enticed many a holidaymaker. With soothing ocean breezes, sparkling soft sands, and deep, blue waters, Zanzibar is often described as a true paradise.

Countless travellers have dreamt of conquering this mountain which stands 5895 meters above sea level. Elisa reveals that there are always different motivations behind it, sometimes it’s just to see the magnificent views which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Others it’s for the personal satisfaction of doing something gruelling- because it’s not a leisurely climb. “It’s six to eight days hiking during the daytime and relaxing and recuperating in the evening with sore legs and stunning scenery.”

Tanzania is also home to many other exciting and interesting islands to explore. Mnemba Island, off the north coast of Zanzibar, is well-known for its beautiful coral reefs and splendid beaches. Another island, Chumbe, is Tanzania’s first marine park and boasts a 100 year-old lighthouse.

CITY TOURS And you cannot forget about the cities in Tanzania. Dar es Salaam and Arusha City are bustling cities filled with the sounds, sights, smells and tastes of Tanzania. The cities here are some of the oldest in Africa and offer busy markets filled with local goods, historic landmarks and iconic museums but also some of the most incredible zoos.

Elisa goes on to say that every precaution is taken for safety. As an example, they offer other hikes on different peaks such as the second highest mountain range in Tanzania, Mount Meru, as a means to acclimatise to the more challenging Kilimanjaro hike.

This is the chance to come face to face with some of the animals you wouldn’t want to see that close in the safaris such as the savannah predators. With zebra, giraffe, monkeys and a variety of reptiles in residence this is an engaging interaction much appreciated within the cities.

“These are by no means ‘lesser’ hikes,” Elisa says, “Mount Meru is a beautiful challenge but we also have multiple volcanic peaks including Oldonyo Lengai, Rungwe and Kitulo that are rewarding treks.”

“It’s important to us that we’re able to share our country’s beauty,” Elisa explains, “We’ve dealt with many clients from all over the world and all of them have left with memories that they will keep forever. That is what makes it all worthwhile.”

What if you wanted something closer to the ocean?

BEACHES AND ZANZIBAR ISLAND Tanzania has approximately 1400 km (870miles) of coastline. There are a number of luxury beach hotels and resorts along this stretch that cater to guests of all types. “There is the main coastline to explore or one of the islands in the Zanzibar archipelago,” Elisa explains, “Tanzania has the best beaches in the world.”

TWEETING. TRAVELLING. TRYING NEW THINGS. Leslie Anne Brooks; our latest Lost Exec. By Donnie Rust Social influencer, philanthropist, model and mother, Leslie Anne Brooks is as busy as they come. I invited Leslie to be featured on The Lost Executive, not only because of her fabulous travelling excursions and impressive social media following, but mostly due to the important work she does as an ambassador with the Shatterproof Organisation.

Professionally speaking, what are you working on at the moment? I’ve been modelling for the past 20 years but I would now call myself a semi-retired model, though I still get work. My current agency, Sigal Models and Talent, still believe in me and send me work. This could be anything from print work to commercials or hosting a segment for an online or local news story.

LIFESTYLE

My husband is a business owner and that has allowed me to be able to stay home and raise our children, which has really been my most rewarding ‘job’. I also volunteer as an ambassador with the Shatterproof Organisation

So, what is keeping you the busiest right now? I am doing a lot of travelling at the moment and I have three children; two daughters between 11 and 12 and a seven year old son. I also do modelling, volunteering and socials.

Shatterproof is a national non-profit organization dedicated to ending the devastation that addiction causes families. I have personally lost two family members to addiction, so this is a cause I am very passionate about. As an ambassador, I help educate and empower others to learn about and support Shatterproof’s mission.

How do you balance all of that together? Especially travelling and motherhood? The past few years I’ve needed to take several trips without the kids. I was fortunate enough to find a wonderful woman to nanny for them during those trips. She stays home with them and they love her. It’s made leaving them a bit easier knowing that they’re in good hands.

Important work. Can you give us an example of what you’ve done as an ambassador? While working with Shatterproof, I actually raised money for a fundraiser and rappelled down the side of a high-rise building. What a way to raise awareness! I’m not really an adrenaline junkie, but the older I get, the more adventurous I become. How has that affected the sorts of projects you get involved with? I have worked with a few exceptional companies. ESPN Radio in Chicago was probably one of the more exciting contracts I’ve had. It’s mostly my travels that have afforded me the opportunity to try so many new things. In the past few years I’ve climbed a mountain in New Hampshire, swum with stingrays in Grand Cayman and hiked a glacier in Iceland. But raising my children has been by far my most challenging and rewarding endeavour. If I’m able to raise kind and happy people, I’ll consider it my greatest work.

67

Online you’ve labelled yourself a “sit down comedian”, have your children inherited your sense of humour? I hope so. I got my sense of humour from my own mother, so maybe it’s genetic. She taught me that it’s so much easier to navigate through life while not taking yourself too seriously and finding humour in every situation. It also helps you to be a kinder human. There is so much negativity in this world. I just hope to bring a little light to those I encounter every day and I hope they will too.

followers, so I jumped right in and started posting about my daily life and the funny thoughts that popped into my head. I really didn’t know what to expect, but I’ve now got 145k followers. It’s been a great outlet for me to stay connected and hopefully give people a laugh. Do you have any heroes that you follow? Most of my favourite Twitter feeds are from everyday, regular people. There are so many funny people out there. I think Twitter has been a great platform to connect us in a way we’ve never had before.

SOCIALS

A lot of people still get put off from socials because they don’t know how to handle the commentary required. How do you manage it? In the beginning, I really did worry about negative commentary. I’ve been fortunate in that most people are kind; but the ‘block’ button sure has come in handy. I really don’t let negative comments get to me though. I figure if someone wants to be nasty to a stranger on the internet, they must be a pretty miserable person. Life’s too short! I’d rather be happy and I try to post daily.

You’re very popular online! Not only do you have a vast community of followers, you also have an impressive engagement rate. They really respond well to you. How much time do you set aside for content creation on socials? Thank goodness for my iPhone! I think being able to access these sites from a phone has changed everything. I’m constantly glancing at it throughout the day to update Twitter, which I think is necessary to keep on top of things. It’s funny, because a few years ago an agent from LA mentioned that I really ought to grow my online presence. Seeing as I’m a bit older and based in the Midwest, he thought a social presence could keep me relevant. At the time, I had about 200 Twitter

TRAVEL In 2017, you went to some cool places like Las Vegas, Naples, FL, Montego Bay, Jamaica, Punta de Mita, Mexico and Iceland. Which was your favourite? I have always loved a beach vacation and Montego Bay, Jamaica was spectacular. We stayed at Sandals Royal Caribbean in their recently opened Over the Water Huts. Our room was right over the water and we were catered to by two dedicated butlers. The view and service were unparalleled. However, Iceland was a bucket list trip. We toured the entire country and, in just a few days, visited several waterfalls, geysers, hiked and snow-mobiled on a glacier. We saw the Northern Lights and swam in the Blue Lagoon too. Sounds awesome. Typically, how do you like to travel? I am based in Columbus, OH so most of my travel is by plane. I prefer to fly first or business class when I can, however Southwest Airlines has several non-stop flights from here, so I like travelling with them for the convenience of saving time during a travel day. Where are you heading in 2018? This year I’ll be travelling to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, Newport Beach, CA, taking a

68

Big question; what are you travelling essentials? iPhones and iPads! Seriously, how lucky are we parents that now you can have entertainment for your kids, whenever you travel? And lots of snacks! I also plan our trips with the shortest travel times possible. Long layovers make for crabby children, which doesn’t help us parents either. There are occasions when we will travel for my husband’s work, but we usually want to bring the kids along. I’ve always been able to find local sitters, usually recommended by the hotel, to stay with the kids while we go to meetings or dinners.

seven-night Eastern Caribbean Disney Cruise with my family and visiting Costa Rica. This will be my first time in all of these locations I’m really excited about seeing them all. What is the best hotel you’ve ever stayed in? There have been so many beautiful locations that I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to, but I’ve always loved The Breakers in Palm Beach, FL. The location is perfect, the interior is so beautiful and they have some of the most gorgeous floral arrangements I’ve ever seen.

MAASAI WANDERINGS Adventure in Tanzania with that “special something.”

Maasai Wanderings and their accommodation partner Nasikia Camps offer a range of safaris and unique Tanzanian experiences all specially designed for the traveler. The kinds of safaris on offer include family and honeymoon safaris, the best rated photo tours which include the opportunity to see wildlife and birdlife in a completely new way and many Zanzibar experiences.

Donna Duggan, who founded the business with her late husband explains that they began the business in 2005. At the time Donna was an Australian nurse and her husband was Tanzanian, so they joined forces to fulfill their dreams and goals to showcase Tanzania and its beauty to the world. Maasai Wanderings has grown and diversified significantly since then, offering tours that last 7 to 10 days and have a unique edge over their competitors. Donna explains that unlike many safari businesses that may have a set-criteria for their tours on which the traveler is merely a guest or passenger, Maasai Wanderings’ tours are very much led by and tailored for the client’s desires. “As long as it is within the laws and permits of the National Parks,” she says, “Clients should feel like it is their safari and that it has been designed especially for them and tailored as such.”

TEAM. EXPERIENCE. PLANNING AND THAT “SPECIAL SOMETHING” This tailoring has to be achieved with absolute adherence to quality of service, value for money and cultural integrity. All of Maasai Wanderings’ itineraries have been meticulously planned

70

This includes training and staff are educated via continuous workshops on how to offer clients optimal service for their personal journeys and adventures. Staff are also handpicked at Maasai Wanderings, not only based on their knowledge and experience but also their personability and natural hospitality from arrival to departure. They know what factors are needed to give an adventure that ‘special something’.

according to careful consideration to the amount of time needed to fully appreciate the adventurous surroundings offered by Tanzania. A big part of this is employing the right people in the team. “Our mountain guides and team were all born in the Kilimanjaro region and therefore possess knowledge of the mountains that cannot be taught,” Donna explains, referring to their understanding of the behaviour of wildlife and patterns of vegetation that mean they can often see things that would otherwise be overlooked. She continues, “We have a very high success rate on the Machame, Rongai and Shira routes on Kilimanjaro and continue to receive praise for our professionalism throughout all our itineraries.”

GIVING BACK Their range of safaris include luxury to budget adventures, working with holiday makers, corporate business people, wildlife adventurers and families. This diversity has given Donna and her team at Maasai Wanderings the opportunity to build many meaningful relationships across Tanzania to help them produce the best experiences for their clients.

For sake of experience-quality as well as travelersafety, the team at Maasai Wanderings often run extra field trip missions to confirm or establish new and improved paths for carrying out the tours. Donna is insistent that every tour itinerary provides the clients with the most enjoyable and culturally educating experience possible.

“My husband was very talented at building relationships and our business was based on that from the start,” Donna reveals, “He was an incredibly humble and social person who enjoyed creating partnerships and relationships with people to learn from them. It was thanks to this

71

CHALLENGES

that we were able to develop our business to where we are now.”

There are the sorts of ongoing and persistent challenges that a safari company needs to address on a day to day basis, ranging across from operations to logistics. Donna explains that one of the main challenges that they’ve had from the start of setting up their business is continuous rule changes with such things as laws and taxation.

One of the notable things about Maasai Wanderings is what they give back. The business was established not only to provide employment for all those involved in it but to give opportunities to those who otherwise would not have received them.

“It is something we have to keep on top of and we’re very good at doing it,” she says, “It’s a simple matter of learning whatever is required, applying it and being prepared for changes in the future.”

“Our main objectives at Maasai Wanderings is the preservation of culture, wildlife and our goodwill projects,” Donna says, “We have arranged our company in such a way, that we are able to aid in these areas by funding various projects that we have initiated ourselves.”

PHOTO SAFARIS Safari driven tourism is a highly effective way of generating revenue, interest and a social value for the wonders of Africa. Animals, plants and landscape included. Especially those tours that encourage people to take pictures that are more than simply selfies. One of the safaris that could offer a simple but effective way of spreading a sense of value for the natural beauty of the African landscape and the animals and cultures that live there is the Photo Safaris offered by Maasai Wanderings.

FUTUREPROOFING Businesses are having to keep themselves abreast of an increasing list of developments not only in terms of business acumen but new technologies as well. Donna keeps herself up to date like any professional would, by constantly learning and investigating everything that she can regarding her industry. Becoming a renowned expert in her country, the safaris and the hospitality sector. Also, as important to her is keeping an open mind and being able to let ideas evolve as they should. Creativity is a big, big part of the tours offered by Maasai Wanderings. “We also keep abreast of what is trending via social media such as Instagram,” Donna, who spends at least an hour a day on Instagram to keep current, says, “But at the end of the day we are successful because we concentrate on what we are good at which is looking after clients and providing them with a once in a life time experience. Everything else flows naturally and positively from this.”

72

This is the chance to spend a safari working with one of their wildlife photographers and photo tour leaders. These are not only some of the leading professionals in their field but are also just as passionate about wildlife as they are photography. Irrespective of a client’s skill these tours ensure that a traveler will take something more away from the safari than just memories.

Maasai Wanderings is a company based on ideals. Ideals of giving back and supporting local communities. Of learning about and engaging with the wonders of Africa’s natural heritage. Of gaining a value in our hearts for this wonderful place.

“These workshops are run by photo tour leaders who possess all the skills, patience, determination and good humor to provide the best experience for everyone attending,” Donna says.

SOD THE ‘SALES FLOOR’ I’M HITTING THAT HORIZON What does it take to get a person to catch their dreams and change their world? To live life on their terms and to not let anyone else determine who or what they are supposed to want? Determination, support from loved ones and family and a firm belief in your own convictions. Also, a douchebag manager on a sales floor comes in handy as well.

inspired him to break out on his own, follow his dreams and live his life the way he wanted to.

“It is important to take note of where you’ve been,” he says, “To make sure you never make the mistake of going there again.”

Brennan Helman the founder and front man of Silverback Outdoors, may very well one day look back with gratitude at his time spent working on a sales floor for an electronic payment system company. It was, after all, his experience there that

74

A COMPARISON OF REALITIES TODAY’S REALITY Brennan, who is 28, runs his business Silverback Outdoors with intelligence and direction. He knows what he wants to get out of the business and has surrounded himself with likeminded people who can help it grow. His business, specializing in producing bespoke jewelry and camping gear, sources products from manufacturers all around the world to ensure the best quality and diversity. “It’s important that customers get new takes on traditional products,” he says, “For example our solar panel USB charger is a product rarely found in UK stores, yet is immensely handy if you want to take a camera or phone on a multi-day hike. Things such as our jewelry are custom designed by us with the sole aim of connecting our products with the ideals or imagery true outdoor enthusiasts relate to.”

“A business is a vehicle,” he said to me over coffee while we were discussing his article, “It is how you reach your goals. But only if you’re driving.” His reality now is one that is bright and full of promise. Compared to a year ago. Where his reality was one of slaving away to make someone else rich. Like millions of people, last year saw Brennan working as an outbound sales agent for a company that had scored a lucky hit and become a “name”. One of hundreds of people sitting on the sales floor he was expected to work long hours cold calling potential clients from overused leads and to come in on weekends. “The earning potential compared to what we were expected to do didn’t add up,” he explains, “They stylized it as this party-driven sales floor reminiscent of a Boiler Room or Wolf of Wall Street film, which only works if the rewards are worth the effort. At any moment you could be hit by a nerf dart to the eye or a football could land on your desk, loud music would be blaring at all times and you were answering to people who did not know their jobs. And those that did were wasted there.” This is something that millions of people can unfortunately relate to. Looking back, Brennan admits that he doesn’t know why he put up with it at all at the time. The breaking point came when his sales manager actively went out of his way to humiliate him in the office and then claimed that he wasn’t “getting into the spirit” of things. After that Brennan left and hasn’t even thought about them since.

Since the business launched in early 2018 it has been a lot of hard work, a lot of negotiating, building relationships and planning ahead with a firm idea of where he wants to be and the sort of lifestyle he wants to have. A life where he is not relying on someone else to set the pace or direction.

75

who reached out to tell Brennan that one of his products, a necklace, had inspired them to commit to hiking the Appalachian Trail. The person explained in the email that the image on the necklace got them thinking about what they wanted from life and they felt it motivated them to make the commitment.

“I must thank that sales manager one of these days,” he says, “If not for him I may have become him.”

MAKING YOUR OWN REALITY The day he left, Brennan recalls, he sat down and poured himself a glass of whiskey and decided that something had to change. “A part of me died that day… the part that was willing to ever work for someone else again,” he says, “I wrote down a list of everything I enjoyed in life and started connecting dots. All signs pointed to something outdoor related and the path was pretty straightforward from there.” After exploring the industry and what his options were, he taught himself how to build a website and how to do SEO, PPC, Social media marketing and graphic design. How to prototype a product design, e-commerce, how to import and export and subsequently how to manage a growing business.

HIS TEAM With his business growing at an unexpected speed, Brennan makes full use of all the technology at hand to achieve top level SEO, PPC and social media analytics. He credits a great deal of the success of his business to making use of the paid for advertising to be found on social media and keeping up with technology.

“It’s a lot of hard work,” he says, “More than you’d ever expect but life is only worth living if you’re in control.” With this in mind, two moments were the best for Brennan. His first sale and his 1000th.

“We embrace and utilise all new technology and see it as an opportunity not a threat. Apart from our supply chain we are almost entirely a cloudbased business as that’s the way businesses are going and it also offers huge benefits.” He says.

“It was one of those moments where you have to take a minute and appreciate what your reality has become.” He says, “I could hardly believe that I was able to live off of doing something I truly love doing. While I work 7 days a week without stopping, the business is now growing to a point where I can delegate more and build up the team.”

“Also, as much as this is a buzz word, agility is the key. Consumer tastes change fast and having a business model that can pivot and move easily is key. I always noted a strong lesson from the collapse of Blockbusters, if anything it really

Beautifully, another triumph came in the form of an email from someone in Virginia in America

76

WHATS COMING FOR SILVERBACK OUTDOORS? Brennan explains that the marketing strategy of his business is about testing, revaluating and testing. There are so many resources available for getting in information on how well a business’ SEO is doing; how many people are seeing the product and buying and where are people buying from. And all of this makes a difference to how he is approaching the long-term growth of his business. “Right now, though, things are moving so fast that it is hard to see passed next month as things are changing every day. But, my vision is to have a firmly established brand with a strong customer affinity and solid team running the day to day of the business for me. And I want my business brand to inspire people to surprise themselves, that’s important to me.”

shows that modern businesses need to embrace and adapt to new tech and changes in the market before new companies pull the rug out from under them.” And his team. Taking leave from his past experience, Brennan sees value in building up his team mates, leading by example and making sure that they know what is expected of them. His approach is quite simply how he would like to be treated and to not allow his leadership of the company to form any distance from that. “Respect and communication go a long way,” he says, “People will not believe in you if you don’t respect and talk to them.”

“DO IT YOURSELF” SAFARI PLANNING IN US By staff writer Timbuktu, a travel planning start-up based in Cape Town, South Africa, is officially launching in the US today, an interactive experience where travelers can fully customize their once-in-a-lifetime safari trips. Users have access to a selection of curated routes across Africa, allowing them to choose from multiple themes that fit their travel preferences, whether for a honeymoon, wine tasting excursion, a relaxing beach break and more. In addition, the traveler has access to hundreds of handpicked lodges from rustic luxury “glamping under the stars” to 4- and 5-star boutique hotels. “United States travelers are extremely tech savvy and very engaged in the ‘DIY’ planning process of booking a safari trip,” says Johnny Prince, CEO and Co-Founder of Timbuktu. “Almost 50 percent of our current bookings are from the US so launching here was imminent and we’re excited to be able to finally provide this service.”

TIMBUKTU SAFARIS Once complete, the individually designed trip is sent to Timbuktu’s on-the-ground concierge team who have expert knowledge of African tours and safaris to guide the traveler throughout the planning process making a safari dream trip into a reality.

78

The company is seeing safari bookings from guests across the US, especially in California, New York and Texas. According to Timbuktu, the most travelled safari destinations from the US are Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania and Botswana. Timbuktu aims to expand from an interactive planning tool to a highly regarded resource of Africa travel information through their curated travel guides with restaurant recommendations, packing tips, and their favourite African experiences.

Additionally, Timbuktu is launching a new technology called “Routes,” giving travelers access to a selection of handpicked routes by a travel concierge, showcasing favourite ways to explore Africa based on the company’s on-the-ground safari experiences. Timbuktu has redesigned their “trip-builder” feature by adding innovative filters, making it easier to find lodge availability in real time, as well as varying locations based on personal style and budget. “Our new live availability technology instantly shows the traveler how busy the accommodations will be on preferred travel dates and if a deposit should be put down to secure their favourite choices,” says Prince. “Saving travelers time, money, and giving them a wide array of choices along with having 24/7 assistance is a big priority for us.”

ABOUT TIMBUKTU Timbuktu is a travel startup based in Cape Town that is revolutionizing the safari industry by empowering travelers to design their own trips in Africa, giving complete control to the customer in the planning process and saving them money along the way.

GET CAPTIVATED BY THE MAGICAL AURORA BOREALIS IN LAPLAND WITH WILD ABOUT LAPLAND By staff writer

Wild About Lapland provides private Aurora Borealis Lapland tours that let you watch the mesmerizing display and enjoy the magical Arctic environment to the fullest. Located in Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, they are passionate about sharing their lifestyle and what they do best. Providing tours that allow all individuals to experience exactly what they wish for, whether it be to experience the Northern lights or to learn how to ice fish or even to take a reindeer ride and meet Santa

Lapland tours depending upon the abilities of their clients, weather conditions and the Northern Light forecasts. To make the experience of watching the mesmerizing lights they drive away from the city to find the perfect spot that provides the highest chances of seeing this visual display on the destined night. They also find a warm spot to sit and wait for the lights to show. They follow a simple logic i.e. the more time you spend outside the more likely you are to see the lights. Usually, they choose the middle of a huge frozen lake or river to offer the best view with the least amount of light pollution. Take a coat.

Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights offer an intense and magical display of light that captivates every individual who sees it! At Wild About Lapland, they offer tailor made Aurora Borealis

Theo Turner, the owner, and lead tour guide has extensive experience of the outdoors. He is a former Royal Marine Commando and Professional Outdoor Instructor. He has a great understanding of the Northern Lights and the Wilderness and how to survive and appreciate it. Now one of his greatest passions is to share the natural phenomena, opportunities, and beauty that the Finnish Lapland has to offer. He says, “While on any of our specialized tours we will give you more than just the experience you’re looking for. What we want you to get out of it is knowledge! When you finish the tour, we promise that you will have a good understanding of your surroundings in the Lapland wilderness, the local people and the Saami people, the wildlife, and even a few key Finnish words.”

OTHER TOURS AVAILABLE SNOW SHOEING AND ICE FISHING TOUR The smaller the group the bigger the experience, as listening to the wilderness is better done in silence. This tour allows you to really feel what it is to head deep into the Arctic forests to try and find some food. Along with the guides you will Snow Shoe through old forests and across a frozen lake in order to get to the perfect spot for Ice Fishing.

THE TOURS The best part about Wild About Lapland for watching Aurora Borealis in Lapland is that they keep all their tours small and friendly to ensure that you get a good amount of time with the guide and enjoy the magical of this natural, cosmic light show.

During this tour, you will learn basic survival skills and fire making skills along with learning how to walk in Snow Shoes!

Private Tours – If you wish to have a private tour of a length which is different to the above tour option for just you and your family/ friends, you can contact Wild About Lapland directly via email or phone to make arrangements. If you take the private tour option you get a 10% discount on the full 8 seats!

Theo explains, “We will drive 20 Kilometres north from Rovaniemi into the Arctic circle, then walk for up to 2km across a frozen lake. Once we have made it through the deep snow to our perfect fishing spot on the ice you will start to prepare your individual spots for fishing and drilling.” While fishing the tour guide will go and chop wood and prepare the fire, but before lighting it they will call over the group and show how we make fire without the use of matches in the Arctic (this can be done in conditions as cold as -30).

Timings – This depends on the time of year and on the Aurora forecast. In the middle of winter, they usually leave between 19.00-21.00 every evening. The resident Aurora specialist picks the tour time every day as late as possible. This way they can be sure to have the best chance of getting the best view.

By the end of the tour, everyone will be a fully qualified and hopefully, successful ice fisher.

Large family/friend group – If you have a group which is larger than their usual size, don’t worry as they can still make something fit your group as a private tour, you will also receive a larger discounted rate the larger the group.

This is also a great opportunity for those travellers who are photo enthusiasts, so bringing your cameras is a must. Also, it is an idea to inform them if you have any dietary requirements because this is adventure and you need to bring it with you.

Theo promises that on their tours, the guest will be happy to know that they will never find themselves being crammed onto a coach load of people.
