lisabona a paradise built in hell, lisbon, portugal fall 2020 - firat erdim nathan and lisa kalaher award - winner with cyle king . . . . lisabona.cargo.site . what does disaster expose? . the earthquake, tsunami, fire of 1755 in lisbon marked a significant change in the western world. this chasm superceeded the future blank slate plan of the city while exposing the layers of past histories . in rebecca solnit’s book, a paradise in hell, the communities that arise in disaster are exposed. in this disaster, what systems were brought to the surface? in the gap between the accumulated history and a new city, what happened? what new humanity was exposed from the past and how did it precede the following time to current history of lisbon? . the project manifests in a meta-historic geofiction that imagines a world that existed immediately following disaster. traces of this world still evident today.

folly rural fayette, iowa . . . . . . . . ah, iowa . . . i grew up in northeast iowa. it took some time to find appreciation, but it is one that builds every time i return home. . this place is where the flatlands meet the rolling hills towards the mississippi. across the street from my grandparent’s farm is where one of these networks begin. my great-grandfather denoted it ‘the folly’, who, farmer of the flatland deemed the giant hill effectively useless to be worked as farmland. . the cleared hill still is not farmed, marking the transition of land. following is an evolution of plans / sections of a house apart of this great hill. not follies in the architecture sense, but the name stays.

fashion campus chelsea, new york city spring 2019 - bosuk hur bwbr prize - nominee with nick roose . . . . . . . . nyc is the fashion capital of the world, yet, it lives an exclusive life in the city. events like fashion week demsontrate the surveilled and privitized nature of new york. . positioned next to the highline, the project offers an optional path into a series of runways. the relation to the highline paradoxically turns it into a runway, offering an intimate look into the fashion world. the chelsea galleries below blur fashion into art, and in turn challenges the private / public relationship of real estate in nyc. . the project is divided into thirds: public runways/ galleries, the university, and housing for students. as a tower for student housing, who has access to the skyline is reconsidered.

projections regimes of perception fall 2019 milam residence, paul rudolph . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . using floor plans and elevation drawings, the residence was re-constructed by projecting from flat representations. the two drawings work together to see themselves, exploring the voyeuristic nature of the house. the small circle in the first drawing is the vantage point of the second drawing. the sailboat in the latter is the view point of the first drawing. the facade is quite literally made of frames, creating stills looking in or out between these two points.

dsm atmosphere des moines, iowa fall 2018 - leslie forehand hansen prize - nominee . . . when one thinks of a national park, a romantized picture of the world may be thought of. in reality, climate change is evident everywhere, distoring even the most ‘natural’. this is a syptom of the urban, asking, what would an urban national park look like? . the effecets of climate change may be somewhat unknown. to better predict, it is possible to look at venus as a future earth. using this model as precident, the project imagines a future earth. pollution from the city is collected into a single volume of atmosphere, extending 100km to the common ‘division’ of earth and space. . the object serves as a monument to the future earth, connected by exposed pipes that lead to the vertical volume. as a new national park, it can be occupied, showing how a human occupation of earth will change. with venus as this model, a new floating city navigates the vertical park, changing the perception of the future, allowing a new human nature to emerge.

loop(y) des moines, iowa fall 2019 - mikesch mueke nathan and lisa kahaler award - winner . . . . . . . lives are consumed in loops. a symptom of capitalism, lives are quanitfied by efficiences, this thinking seeping into architecture. these loops become ever tighter, idiolized in closed circles as seen as a solution to sustainability, for example. the schism between building / nature could not be more apparent. . a former publishing house becomes a apartments for people living with autism spectrum disorder (asd), a data center, and gallery. concerned with aspects of historic preservation, the living building challenge, and regenerative design, a new hybrid architecture emerges where all systems must work together in roughly 40,000 sq ft. . this project investigates loops as a way to explore the inherinit interconectedness of things. how can loops can break?

days, months, years, each separate cycling endlessly life in loops systems idiolized tighter enclosures out is never in everywhere, materials linked growing and decaying break loops loops break decaying and growing linked materials everywhere in never is out enclosures tighter idolized systems loops in life endlessly cycling separate each, years, months, days
