DonovanTan Architecture Undergrad
I have a cheerful and bright personality that seeks to bring joy to the people around me. My passion for architecture drives me to explore further and take on new challenges. After completing my diploma, I wanted to understand what it is like working in the architecture scene. This drove me to work as a lighting designer for a year to expose myself to different aspects of architecture. Followed by a return to the architecture firm as an architectural assistant for another 7 months before deciding to continue my studies in UNSW. I am currently working as a freelance designer at MAMOLiving Australia, establishing a style and image to their brand while also designing a few of their future showrooms / galleries.

The Goods Place Transition | Extension | Connection
Location : Ultimo Located in the cultural and historical area in Ultimo, sandwiched between the decorated walkways of The Goods Line and the historical and cultural presence of The Powerhouse Museum, The Goods Place was designed as a space of transition, extension and connection. The Goods Place is split into two portion, with The Goods Corridor (A basement cultural walkway running in parallel with The Goods Line bringing the cultural elements from The Powerhouse Museum down to a different plane.) and The Goods Tower ( An Extension of the Ground Plane upwards that contains various amenities that will be able to give back to the area). The Goods Place shows the possibilities of spatial connection vertically and diagonally, integrating the various urban typographies into a project that would be able to tie the different axis and junctions of the site together.

Sectional Perspective | Overlapping Relationships within two Parallel Directions
Overlapping Interactions A Jagged edge along two pathways parrallel to each other seperating the two sides, introducing overlapping spaces in the forms of in and out platforms . These overlapping spaces portrays a mental image of the goods corridor on the ground plan with the goods line, emerging from the set physical boundary between the two sites. This allows for an option where users can move across the nodes at different pathways while still maintaining the relationship between the pathways and not miss out on what the other has to offer.

THE GOODS GALLERY Not defining the purpose of the space allows for the possibilties, allowing for the users/community members to define the users of the zones. Scarfolding structures - allows for spaces to be flexible and to move around and additional elements can be added on clamping on the scarfold, mezzanine spaces could be added / removed giving the play of volumes in a space.

Location : Newtown Choices? In the suburb of newtown, the streets and lanes are filled with victorian houses with narrow frontages and a very limited experience and relationship with its surroundings. Looking inside, the spaces within are connected via a main circulation axis. Exploring various relationships and connections between these spaces by peeling the layers of the victorian houses. From the street into the front porch into the living spaces. The kind of human situations that resulted in these relationships, will there possibly be a space that would accomodate different types of users? Or will the users have to be the one accomodating to the space?
Expanding on the relationships of the Victorian houses, creating common points and new layers of connecting spaces resulting in the alternative transitions through the spaces, from the public to the private and vice versa. The different possible methods of moving from point A to point B allowing for the different relationships and interventions between the layers of the spaces. Giving residence and visitors the choice of interactions that they will experience through the journey.

St
Newtown Subdivison Subdivision of plots allowed for a young growing population to move closer towards the city and universities. This greatly affected the living conditions within causing for a very linear direction of relationship between spaces, greatly restricting the potential of the kind of lifestyles and privacy of its users.

Dwelling 01 First Storey Plan with arrows pointing towards the focal points at different points of the spaces
Sharing a similar linear layout with the Victorian Terraces, but opening the physical boundary of the spaces to allow for a stronger connection with its internal spaces and surrroundings. The spaces within dwelling 01 was not just directed internally, but there was always an outlook towards the surrounding communal spaces and also with the urban spaces around the site. Relationships of the spaces are connected on the perimeter visually with the openness of the spaces and spatially with the connection of its the surrounding atmosphere. This allows for the residence of dwelling 01 to have the option to be one with its surroundings or to withdraw further back into its more private and intimate spaces
Dwelling 02 - Extrovert
Dwelling 02 - First & Second Storey Part Plan In the middle of the dwelling units. Is this a focal point? How can we allow for the spaces to be connected or an extension of the surroundings will maintaing the comfort and privacy for the residence. Placing the private spaces on the lower floor and moving the living spaces upwards allows for the living spaces to still have a sense of privacy from the communal graden, giving them a choice of being recessed back into their private living space or move out to the outdoor open space to be closer to the public spaces

Dwelling 03 - Solitary
Dwelling 03 - First Storey Part Plan Dwelling 03 being “ isolated “ at the back of the other two units makes it feel the most enclosed / private of the 3 units. Do we keep it that way? Can we bring the living spaces out? Are the spaces defined by the physical boundary? Creating a layering of spaces outward to give a more subtle flow between the dwelling unit and the communal exterior spaces allowing for the residents to be encouraged to move and use these layers as they have the choice to transition between the inside and out.

A small stone and bathroom supplier that was trying to apease towards the contemporary designers market. The team was small and I was the co lead designer in the team, producing marketing materials based on the company’s stratergies. Designing brochues, packaging materials, redesigning their website and its content, and most imporantly , leading the design of their gallery display spaces for their partner’s physical stores. Myself and the co lead designer are currently working with them to redesign the current office & warehouse to be transformed into a stone art gallery.

M&Y Design Architects | Addition & Alteration Location : Singapore
Project Summary Role : Architecture Assistant, leading Project in conjuction with Firm Director Phase : Detailed Development, Tender, Construction, Hand Over Budget : $5 Mil Tasks : Developing on Conceptual Schemes and Spaces Tender and Construction Drawings Authority Submissions Client and Builder Liaison Site Management Handover to Client Additions and Alterations of a 30 year old traditional tropical style bungalow in Singapore. The owner originally required us to expand their front yard to include a larger swimming pool and carry out minro restoration works around the rest of the house. However, we saw more potential in the site that would allow the owner to fully embrace with its surrounding landscape. In particular, the irregular terrain and luscious landscape. During the detailed development phase, we wanted these potentials to be realised and started proposing them towards the owner. The owners were very open to the ideas as we walked with them on site, showing them the different possibilities. We brought the following ideas to them - a timber deck surrounding the pool allowing for them to reach deep corners of the site which the previous designs constrained them, while creating a form of visual and spatial connection towards the pool and living areas. Open terraces on the upper floors allowed them to connect with the ground floor swimming pool. Surrounding the terraces with green planters to extend outwards to the surrounding vibrant landscape. We faced challenges navigating the building codes due to the age of the house. we now had to comply with stricter building codes, especially towards the fire safety regulations. This forced us to adjust our designs in order to meet the necessary guidelines, but at the same time, we managed to minimize deviation from our design intentions.
