THE DANISH COMPOSER AND TRUMPET PLAYER, JAKOB BUCHANAN, HAS WRITTEN A TRIBUTE TO OUR DECEASED – AND TO LIFE ITSELF. It is a modern requiem for choir and orchestra, involving the Aarhus Cathedral Choir and the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, as well as three fantastic jazz soloists: Indra Rios-Moore, Marilyn Mazur, Jonas Westergaard and Jakob Bro, all of whom have worked closely with Jakob Buchanan for some time and whose talents are therefore well known to him. Jakob is himself a member of the Aarhus Jazzorchestra and has previously recorded an album with the Aarhus Cathedral Choir (Salmesuite, 2011), as well as playing and touring for some years with Marilyn Mazur and Jakob Bro. He was also producer for Indra's debut CD (released in 2010). Jakob Buchanan was the first rhythmic student to be accepted at the er Royal Academy of Music soloist class and has been a member of the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra (formerly Kluver's Big Band) from 2001 – 2004 and from 2009 to date. He says: "It's fantastic to explore new territories – with people I know well in a musical context. I had them all in mind while I wrote this music. This has been the most exciting and time-consuming project I have ever worked on." A requiem is a soul-mass for the dead, in the Roman Catholic tradition. Countless composers have, in the past, produced music to the Latin words of the nine movements, which begin with: Requiem
aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceateis' (Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them). Buchanan's common theme throughout the requiem has been the breaking-down of musical boundaries: the aesthetics of the classical choir being mixed with the orchestral tones of jazz music. The ancient Latin words (sung by the Cathedral Choir) are mixed with lyrics in English, based on Buddhist sayings, which are sung by the jazz singer Indra Rios-Moore. She also sings the fourth movement, 'Sanctus', in Spanish (she was born and raised in New York, with both English and Spanish-speaking parents).
FEATURED ARTISTS indra: The vocalist, Indra Rios-Moore who has performed and toured internationally for the last fifteen years, moved in 2007 from New York to Aarhus and later Copenhagen, where she has achieved an ever-increasing popularity amongst Danish audiences. Her singing style ranges broadly from the American jazz repertoire to the more traditional American folksongs and R&B. Indra's new CD will be released on the renowned label Impulse (Universal Records). marilyn mazur: The percussionist, drummer, composer and bandleader, Marilyn Mazur is an international star. Born in New York, she has lived in Denmark since she was six years old. In 1985, Miles Davis asked her to become a member of his group and for the next four to five years she toured worldwide with, first Miles Davis and then the Gil Evans orchestra and Wayne Shorter's Quintet. In 1991 Marilyn joined the Jan Garbarek Group, but from 2005 she has concentrated mainly on her own groups, such as Future Song, Marilyn Mazur Group, Celestial Circle, Mystic Family and Percussion Paradise. jakob bro: The Danish guitarist and composer, Jakob Bro, has, in spite of his young age, already won several Danish music Awards and made an impression on the international jazz scene, mainly through his latest critically acclaimed albums: Balladering, Time and December Song. Apart from his successful solo career, where Jakob Bro has worked with people such as Bill Frisell, Lee Konitz and Kurt Rosenwinkel, he has played with Paul Motian and the Electric Bebop Band, Tomasz Stanko Quintet and worked with Danish artists outside the jazz scene. jonas westergaard: Lying in the slipstream of the many young bass players that Denmark has produced can be extremely difficult, but Jonas Westergaard has found his own place in the music, which is innovative and challenging without disregarding tradition. Motivated by the above words, Jonas Westergaard went on to win the Danish
Radio Jazz Prize in 2006, as proof of his obvious talent and his persistence and hard work on the jazz scene. Westergaard's bass playing has now made its mark with jazz enthusiasts of both the newer and the more tradition-bound forms of jazz. Westergaard belongs to the generation of Danish jazz musicians who are able to play music that has an international orientation as well as music that crosses genres and traditions. carsten seyer-hansen is cantor in the Aarhus Cathedral since 2003 with responsibility for its extensive choral activity. His main activities lie within vocal music; he is founder and conductor of the acclaimed Vocal Group Concert Clemens, Aarhus Cathedral Choir and St. Clemenns Boys Choir. He works regularly with a large variety of ensembles and orchestras, such as Aarhus Bach Orchestra, Ensemble Midt Vest and Aarhus Jazz Orchestra. Since 1998 he is associates professor in choir conducting at the Royal Academy of Music teaching choir conductors and church musicians." aarhus jazz orchestra Formerly Klüver's Big Band, leader: Lars Møller. The orchestra can celebrate no less than a 35-year anniversary and has collaborated with many of the world's best jazz musicians, including, more recently, the guitar icon John Scofield. They have toured in Scandinavia and the US with the Grammy winning American singer Kurt Elling, In New York they performed six evenings in a row at the legendary Birdland Club, near Times Square. the aarhus cathedral choir consists of sixteen choristers who are all deeply involved in the Aarhusian choir scene. Apart from being involved in every religious service, the choir also participates in the many concerts performed in the cathedral, with the occasional CD production. The choir is augmented whenever necessary and has recently performed, amongst other works, Brahm's Requiem, as well as the B-minor Mass and the Passions of St. Mathew and St. John, by J.S. Bach. The choir recently recorded Duruflé's Requiem with Concert Clemens, Randi Stene, Bo Skovhus and Kristian Krogsøe. This recording (complete organ works, motets and Requiem, conducted by Carsten Seyer-Hansen) has been considered as a benchmark recording in international reviews, and received the prestigious Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik in 2012."
