Introduction to Design

Introduction to Design Objective

To introduce ‘design’ and provide the students an opportunity to understand the historical perspectives, contemporary

thoughts, and trends in design from a broader perspective. Also, sensitize and orient them towards ‘design thinking’ and ‘design as a profession’.

About the course

Introduction to Design in the first module, where a series of

speakers from various disciplines gave us presentations about their field. As we got a deep insight into how design works and also how a designer works, this was an extremely educational

way to begin the semester. Design evolution and relevance and the different perspectives in which different designers worked were also covered.

Learning

This module gave me a new perspective on design and helped me to break all the stigma that I have thought about design. The module also taught me that every design discipline is

interconnected. It also gave me an insight into how designers approach a design problem, process, and come up with the solution. The module gives a clear idea that design is a vast ocean of opportunities.

Assignment 1

Based on your own understanding and the experience/ insights that you gathered from the course(through the

guest lectures, discussions, audio visuals) articulate and represent your ‘thoughts on Design’, visually, as a poster

(hand made or digital, as you wish) with a one liner slogan or a metaphor.

How teamwork is part of design. Design is not a single man’s

game instead it a team game. Behind every great design,

there are a lot of hands that work behind it. In this poster design, I tried to show the hand that comes together to make the design happen. Each hand in this illustration is a different department of design that comes together in each step of the process.

Assignment 2

In this assignment, we were asked to choose a household object of Indian Origin and do research on it. The research

should include functionality, form, material, process, and involves in the making of the object and the larger impact

of the object on the environment. Articulate into a writeup.

Kindi An object well-designed Kindi is a vessel/pitcher that is used in southern India

especially in Kerala. Kindi is made out of copper, brass,

bronze, and silver. Kindi has a unique shape that helps us to utilize water in a very effective manner. Kindi is used mainly used for washing hands and feet in the olden

times. Kindi used to place in the entrance of the house for guests to wash their hands and legs before entering the house and

also that visitors can wash their hands after meals. The design of kind helps to reduce the wastage of water.it

also plays a significate role in the Hindu religion it’s used by Hindu priests for poojas and wedding ceremonies.

Kindi has three main parts Kuzhal(tunnel), Vaya (mouth or the opening) Bharani (base). Due to the tunnel, the water can be access effectively without less effort. Kindi uses

gravitational force to make the water flow. While using a

Kindi the user never touches the water inside the Kindi, so that water never gets contaminated. Kindi is a modern

version of the Kamandalu. Kindi is not just a decorative item instead

it’s a well-designed and thoughtful object. The kindi in my house is a gift that was given to my grandmother by her family at the time of marriage. It used tradition back in

times to gift kindi and other kitchen utensils to the bride.

There is a ceremony called 11 Mathuramkoduppu11 similar to a Bridal shower at the time a small kindi is used for the

Mathuramkoduppu ceremony. Kindi there for plays a very important role in the cultural, religious, and functional

object. The use of kindi differs from person to person. Due

to the innovations, people are forgetting about this object that used to part of the culture.

Design Process Objective

The objective of the course was to introduce students to the ontology and structure of Design Thinking,

Understanding different stages in the design process

perception and articulation of a problem, and generating meaningful solutions through investigation, analysis, and synthesis.

About the course The design Process module introduces us to different stages in the design process. From identifying the problem to

finalizing the solution for the problem through Investigation, Analysis, and synthesis revisiting the various stages of the process over until you find the optimum solution.

Learning

The design process taught me how extensively a design

problem must be researched and studied. It helped me to analyze and make design solutions. It also taught me the

importance step by step process, analysis of the problem, research, and the outcome when it comes to the design

process. This also gave an insight into how to design the process work in a project.

Science and Liberal Arts

Science and Liberal Arts Objective The objective of the course is to provide students with

theoretical tools for understanding art and culture and give a brief survey of aesthetic theories and principles by which

any product is judged in a given epistemic field. It also helps them to examine and explore the link between art, design,

and aesthetics and also too engage the students to think in

abstract terms, to convert abstract perceptions to concrete

representations, To try and articulate (in speech and writing) their perception of the aesthetic.

About the course The course began to define Art, Beauty & Philosophy. It drew

parallels between the philosophies of the East and the West and also discussed the history of both extensively. This was

done by comparing and studying the contrasts and similarities of the two. We were also introduced to theories explained by Bharatamuni in Natyasha, such as the Rasa (Evocation of a subjective state) theory.

56

Assignment 1

The assignment was to write up on the “understanding

of rasa theory how rasa theory is portrayed in a famous painting.

57

Science and Liberal Arts

Assignment 2 The assignment was to write a Critical Analysis on the movie Ghare Baire By Satyajit Ray.

Critical analysis of Ghare Baire The movie Ghare Baire is a classic movie by Master Director Satyajit Ray. The movie is about Love, freedom, and companionship and which is set in the backdrop of the nationalist movement in Bengal. The story revolves around 3 main characters Bimala, is a respected and ideal wife of the 20th century. Nikhilesh Choudhury is a noble, western educated, and liberal landowner. Sandeep Mukherjee is a revolutionist, charming leader of the Swadeshi movement. We can see the conflict of views of the characters through the movie how the different views influence others and lead to the climax of the movie. Ghare Baire is still relevant today in the context of a current affair happening in our country how our country is been turned into an exclusionary nationalism. Bimala can be represented as India and how India was trapped between two different ideologies that were prominent at the time of the Nationalist movement. The movie uses symbolism throughout the movie. Satyajit Ray brilliantly uses the fire as symbolism at the starting of the movie and at the end of the movie. The cinematography and the art direction are spectacular have me the feeling of that period.

Assignment 3 The assignment was to take a idioms from your
