Another summer riding season is in full swing and the anticipation among riders for taking their scooters out on their favorite runs or going to one of the hundreds of motorcycle rallies around the country is mounting as the days are counted down. As for me personally, I always look forward to getting back up to the mountain canyons here in Colorado and of course I love going to Sturgis.
The best time to go up to the Black Hills is a few weeks before the Sturgis Rally kicks off. There’s very little traffic to contend with and I love riding the Black Hills and The Bad Lands without ten thousand other scooters on the same roads I like to ride up there. But the biggest reason I love going to Sturgis any time is to meet up with old friends and to meet people I only know from Facebook. It’s just amazing how many people I’ve met from Facebook and put a face to the name and have had strong relationships come from that first face to face.
I like to go up to South Dakota a week or two before the rally starts so I can do what I call prayer rides. I will get on Bullwinkle and ride all of the popular roads and pray for the safety of the people who will ride them during the rally. When I do one of those rides I try to follow the Spirit’s lead and wherever He has me stop to eat or drink I go in with expectations that He will have me pray a specific prayer related to a Divine encounter at some point during the rally. I’ve seen that kind of faith in action result in some of the most incredible blessings imaginable and now after decades of seeing the Spirit do some pretty amazing things I’m finally expecting Him to show up instead of wondering if He will.... I’ve been chomping at the bit to get on Bullwinkle and lay down some miles because I’ve been more or less stuck in a couple different places for a few months. I got stuck because of the weather and some personal health issues I have to deal with but freedom is near!
I check the weather every day to see how many days I can ride without freezing my butt off or needing rain gear and it looks like the next month is gonna be really nice. Like most people, I know the only thing that will stop or slow me down from putting on some serious miles is the rising cost of fuel. But whether or not I can ride very far I will still be grateful for all the time I’ve had in the saddle and the people I’ve been blessed and honored to have met.
It won’t be long and I will be heading north to Hot Springs and Belle Fourche, South Dakota to visit some good friends and to make some contingency plans for the Sturgis Rally. I can feel the expectations of some good things happening growing in my spirit every day which is something I don’t usually have. I’ve had a lot of disappointment in my world so I’ve learned to suppress any expectations I might have but this time I can’t do it, it just keeps growing. I’ve been getting messages from people in several other countries who are going to be there this year and want to meet and ride together and I can’t wait to meet them all.
