Butt SaddleSore 1000

1000 miles in 24 hours or less. That is what it takes to earn the certification for the Iron Butt SaddleSore 1000. Lee Chamblee of Zebulon, NC made the decision he was going to accept this challenge once again. This would be his third SaddleSore, but his first time setting one up and taking the lead. Initially there were going to be close to a dozen bikes total, but unfortunately for reasons beyond their control some just couldn’t join. In addition to Lee the others that joined on this ride were Jay & Michelle Honeycutt (Linden, NC), Joseph Jones (Garner, NC), Justine Homiak (Knightdale, NC), Denise Southerland (Garner, NC), Robert ‘BobCat’ Spurgeon & Chris Perry (Clayton , NC). On Friday July 9th at 7 pm the group of eight (six bikes, 2 passengers) met at Redneck BBQ Lab in McGee’s Crossroads. Reaching the meet up spot proved to be a challenge in itself for some of us with torrential downpouring rain complete with thunder and lightening. Story and photos: Michelle Honecutt

Leaving promptly at 8pm a rainbow was the first thing to grab our attention as we started in route to Daytona, Florida. The weather cleared and leaving at night proved to be the best decision ever. The ride down was absoutey flawless with only a couple of stops to fuel, stretch our legs and of course grab a cup of coffee. We reached the Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona HD dealership just before 5:45 am Saturday morning. We had made great time and were able to relax for a while and even searched out some quick breakfast in Flagler Beach, Fl., before heading back. Coming back there was congestion on I-95 between Florida and Savannah, Ga so we detoured around using I-17 for a stretch. Even with that we were still able to stop in at the Savannah Harley-Davidson dealership.

Pulling back into the Redneck BBQ Lab parking lot at approximately 5pm on Saturday evening all six bikes and eight riders had safely completed the SaddleSore 1000 in approximately 21 hours. Upon completing and submitting the required paperwork and fuel receipts we will receive certificates showing we are now part of the “Iron Butt Association - World’s Toughest Riders’. The best part... we had a blast doing it!
